Scott Walker/Jacques BrelScott Walker Meets Jacques Brel ... CD
Ace (UK), Late 60s. New Copy ... $14.99 19.99
A really great collection of work – one that shows the strong influence of Belgian songwriting genius on the music of Scott Walker! Scott emerged from the poppy Walker Brothers with a series of albums in the late 60s – records that are now well-respected classics that showed a much deeper side of the singer – one built partly from his own great compositions, but also from some musical contributions from Brel! This package begins with nine Scot Walker interpretations of Brel tunes – pulled from the albums Scott, Scott 2, and Scott 3 – with translations in the Mort Schuman mid 60s mode – a bit clunky, but perfect for Scott's baroque presentation of the material – especially as the tunes chosen are some of the spookier ones in Brel's collection of work. Scott Walker titles include "My Death", "Sons Of", "Funeral Tango", "Next", "The Girls & The Dogs", "If You Go Away", "Mathilde", "Amsterdam", and "Jackie". Then, the CD follows with Brel's own versions of the tunes, in French – which makes for a really wonderful comparison of modes – at a level that's followed up even more strongly in the notes within. Jacques Brel titles include "Tango Funebre", "Le Chanson De Jacky", "Au Suivant", "Les Filles Et Les Chiens", "Seul", "Ne Me Quitte Pas", "Mathilda", "La Mort", "Amsterdam", and "Fils De". CD

Philips (France), 1961. Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Brel's first famous recording at the Olympia Theatre – recorded in 1961 during the formative days of his work with arranger Francois Rauber! The larger orchestra on the session is directed by Daniel Janin, but Rauber's also playing piano in the lead, alongside Gerard Jouannest – and some of the best tracks feature haunting work on accordion by Jean Corti. Includes great versions of Brel classics that include "La Statue", "Les Bourgeois", "Le Paumes Du Petit Matin", "Les Biches", and "Les Singes". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Scott WalkerTil The Band Comes In ... LP
Philips (UK), 1970. Very Good ... $99.99
Scott Walker's fifth solo album, and an oft-overlooked gem that really shows some new sides of his talents! The style here is a bit less iconic than that of the previous two records – more personal or sentimental at times, yet still served up with that uncannily observant sensibility that Scott inherited from Jacques Brel. Walker's voice is wonderfully fluid – still as dark as before, but with a slightly jazzy sensibility at times – no doubt picked up from his tours at the time in the UK as a small club vocalist. The album features a surprising guest appearance from Esther Ofarim, who sings solo on the track "Long About Now" – an odd arrangement that came about because Scott and her shared the same manager, Ady Semel, who also was sort of the director for the album. Titles include "Little Things", "Joe", "Thanks For Chicago Mr James", "Til The Band Comes In", "Cowbells Shakin", "The War Is Over", and "Jean The Machine". LP, Vinyl record album
(Vintage UK pressing, in textured cover! Cover has light wear on the edges, a small mark from a sticker in one corner, and some light splitting on the bottom seam.)

VariousI'd Love To Turn You On – Classical & Avant Garde Music That Inspired The Counterculture (3CD set) ... CD
El (UK), 1940s/1950s/1960s. New Copy 3CD ... $19.99
The title's a reference to a Beatles' song – and the set brings together a range of classical and other styles of music that had a huge influence on the 60s pop scene – a number of sources that you'll definitely recognize in later work by the Fab Four, plus lots more important work as well! About eighty percent of the set is classical, in a mix of both avant/20th Century, and some warmer more sentimental modes – and the package also includes a few choice cuts from the world of jazz, European pop, and even global music – so that the 3CD set features this amazing mix of sounds from artists who include Charlie Parker, Jacques Brel, Bernard Herrmann, Yusef Lateef, Bruno Martino, Lucio Alves, Sun Ra, Ravi Shankar, and composers who include Berio, Bach, Xenakis, Stravinsky, Holst, Handel, Williams, Stockhausen, Ravel, and John Cage. 51 tracks in all – and notes that help guide you through this amazing musical journey. ✨✧ Michel LegrandLes Demoiselles De Rochefort (Young Girls of Rochefort) ... CD
Philips/Universal (Japan), 1966. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of our favorite soundtracks ever – a jazzy swinging ode to love found and love lost – all penned by the legendary Michel Legrand! The work was composed in collaboration with director Jacques Demy for his 1966 film of the same name – and, like the previous Demy/Legrand collaboration, Umbrellas Of Cherbourg, the movie's a story in song – one that has much of the dialogue presented as sung lyrics to the tunes. The mode takes off from a Hollywood musical style, and pushes the genre into territory that's much hipper, very French, and with a soaring approach that's filled with plenty of mod 60s jazz grooves. Legrand's genius has never sparkled so brightly – and his ability to interweave different themes, stories, and grooves is simply amazing! Titles include "Chanson Des Jumelles", "Chanson De Delphine", "Nous Voyageons De Ville En Ville", "Chanson D'Andy", "La Femme Coupee En Morceaux", and "Marins Amis Amants Ou Maris". CD

This double-length set presents the expanded original score – with many songs that were not on the original single version of the soundtrack, plus key bits of dialogue to help transition the tunes. Titles include "Chanson Des Jumelles", "Chanson De Delphine", "Nous Voyageons De Ville En Ville", "Chanson D'Andy", "La Femme Coupee En Morceaux", and "Marins Amis Amants Ou Maris". Plus, this 2 CD version of the score includes 9 extra bonus cuts – including 5 from the "orchestral version" of the score, plus some other instrumental jazz versions by Michel Legrand! The whole package is great, and the booklet's filled with nice photos from the very groovy movie. A treasure, and one that we're extremely happy to be stocking! CD
