Jacques BrelLa Chanson Des Vieux Amants 2 ... LP
Barclay (France), 1967. Very Good+ Gatefold ... $4.99
Repackaging of Brel's 1967 LP – featuring some of his lesser known work from the late 60s, set to arrangements by longtime accompanist Francois Rauber. The tracks are still quite strong, and if anything, Brel's writing has only gotten sharper by this point. Titles include "Le Gaz", "A Jeun", "Fils De", "Les Bonbons 67", "Mon Pere Disait", "La La La", and "Les Coeurs Tendres". LP, Vinyl record album
(Late 70s pressing.)

Jacques BrelLe Plat Pays 1 (Les Bourgeois) ... LP
Barclay (France), 1962. Very Good Gatefold ... $9.99
Brel at his best – delivered with the biting tone that made Brel one of the most brilliant social commentators of the 20th Century, yet with a warmth that offset his critical vision with a real love of life! Arrangements and orchestrations are by the mighty Francois Rauber – a bit fuller and richer than on other Brel albums – in a manner that seeks to deepen the feeling of the tunes without overwhelming them in emotion. Beautiful work throughout – and with titles that include "Madeline", "La Statue", "Les Paumes Du Petit Matin", "Bruxelles", "Les Bourgeois", "Les Biches", and "Chanson Sans Paroles". Beautiful! LP, Vinyl record album
(70s pressing in the gatefold fold-over cover.)

Scott Walker/Jacques BrelScott Walker Meets Jacques Brel ... CD
Ace (UK), Late 60s. New Copy ... About January 31, 2020
A really great collection of work – one that shows the strong influence of Belgian songwriting genius on the music of Scott Walker! Scott emerged from the poppy Walker Brothers with a series of albums in the late 60s – records that are now well-respected classics that showed a much deeper side of the singer – one built partly from his own great compositions, but also from some musical contributions from Brel! This package begins with nine Scot Walker interpretations of Brel tunes – pulled from the albums Scott, Scott 2, and Scott 3 – with translations in the Mort Schuman mid 60s mode – a bit clunky, but perfect for Scott's baroque presentation of the material – especially as the tunes chosen are some of the spookier ones in Brel's collection of work. Scott Walker titles include "My Death", "Sons Of", "Funeral Tango", "Next", "The Girls & The Dogs", "If You Go Away", "Mathilde", "Amsterdam", and "Jackie". Then, the CD follows with Brel's own versions of the tunes, in French – which makes for a really wonderful comparison of modes – at a level that's followed up even more strongly in the notes within. Jacques Brel titles include "Tango Funebre", "Le Chanson De Jacky", "Au Suivant", "Les Filles Et Les Chiens", "Seul", "Ne Me Quitte Pas", "Mathilda", "La Mort", "Amsterdam", and "Fils De". CD

✨✧ Jacques BrelIf You Go Away – Jacques Brel Is Alive & Singing In Paris ... LP
Philips, Mid 60s. Very Good+ Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An important early release of Brel's best work in the US – titled in a way that references the hit musical based on his songs, and Rod McKuen's butchered translation of "Ne Me Quitte Pas". Fortunately, the album includes the original Brel recording of "Ne Me Quitte Pas", plus the tracks "La Moribond", "Marieke", "La Colombe", "L'Are De La Betise", "La Tendresse", "Les Flamands", and "La Valse A Mille Temps". LP, Vinyl record album
(In the heavy gatefold cover, with booklet.)

✨✧ Jacques BrelJacques Brel (Ces Gens-La) ... LP
Barclay (France), 1964. Very Good ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Pure and classic Jacques Brel all the way through – a landmark album that's filled with some of his most biting compositions – including many tunes that later went onto great fame in the English speaking world! The arrangements are by Francois Rauber – Brel's superb collaborator during the time – and the tracks are a brilliant indictment of post-war morals and bourgeois ideals! Tracks include "Les Bergers", "Fernand", "Tango Funebre", "Ces Gens-La", "Grand'Mere", "L'Age Idiot", and "Mathilde". LP, Vinyl record album
(Canadian Barclay pressing. Cover has a split bottom seam.)

✨✧ Jacques BrelBrel ... LP
Barclay (France), 1977. Very Good Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
This was Brel's last album before his death, and it's an oft-overlooked piece of work that's fantastically different from his better-known 60's oevre, but also every bit as great as that stuff. The tracks on here have an amazingly sombre quality, and are filled with deep swells of emotion that probably made Scott Walker, Mort Shuman, and all the rest wish that they'd waited another 15 years to cover Brel's work! And because this stuff missed the big 60's wave of English translation, it's a lot less familiar, which makes it even more important to have in the original format. Titles include "Jojo", "Jaures", "La Ville S'Endormait", "Voir Un Ami Pleurer", and "Les F...". Fantastic, and a fitting last testament to one of the world's greatest artists! LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Michel LegrandLes Demoiselles De Rochefort (Young Girls of Rochefort) ... CD
Philips/Universal (Japan), 1966. New Copy ... About March 25, 2020
One of our favorite soundtracks ever – a jazzy swinging ode to love found and love lost – all penned by the legendary Michel Legrand! The work was composed in collaboration with director Jacques Demy for his 1966 film of the same name – and, like the previous Demy/Legrand collaboration, Umbrellas Of Cherbourg, the movie's a story in song – one that has much of the dialogue presented as sung lyrics to the tunes. The mode takes off from a Hollywood musical style, and pushes the genre into territory that's much hipper, very French, and with a soaring approach that's filled with plenty of mod 60s jazz grooves. Legrand's genius has never sparkled so brightly – and his ability to interweave different themes, stories, and grooves is simply amazing! Titles include "Chanson Des Jumelles", "Chanson De Delphine", "Nous Voyageons De Ville En Ville", "Chanson D'Andy", "La Femme Coupee En Morceaux", and "Marins Amis Amants Ou Maris". CD
