Abdullah Ibrahim (Dollar Brand)Balance ... LP
Gearbox (UK), 2019. New Copy Gatefold ... $23.99 29.99 About April 15, 2024 (delayed)
Really fantastic material from legendary pianist Abdullah Ibrahim – a set cut with a larger group of musicians, which we like even more than Ibrahim's work in a solo or trio format! The group here is his Ekaya ensemble – who flesh out Abdullah's larger musical ideas in a really great way – providing this sensitive soul and spirit for his work on piano – which, after all these years, still echoes the rhythmic impulses that made him such a standout in the 60s – but which also has this matured approach to color and tone that's really wonderful – and beautifully illuminated by the group! Players include Cleave Guyton Jr on alto and flute, Lance Bryant on tenor, Andrea Murchison on trombone, and Marshall McDonald on baritone – and the rhythm section features great work from Will Terrill on drums, and Noah Jackson on bass and cello. Titles include "Jabula", "Tuangu Guru", "ZB2", "Dreamtime", "Nisa", "Tonegawa", and "Devotion". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Hugh MasekelaGrazing In The Grass/Bajabula Bonke ... 7-inch
Uni, Late 60s. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
A stone winner – on both sides! You already know Hugh's classic "Grazing In The Grass", one of the all-time great Afro Pop numbers – with trademark loud cowbell and wonderful off-beat horn sounds. "Bajabula" is pretty darn great, too – and although it's very very slow, it's got a similar haunting groove, with off-kilter rhythms that make it really compelling. 7-inch, Vinyl record

Abdullah IbrahimSenzo ... CD
Sunnyside, 2009. Used ... $8.99
Great solo piano work from Abdullah Ibrahim – and a set that's put together a bit differently than some of his other records of this nature! Often, solo Ibrahim sides are quite long and extended – but this time around, most of the tracks are quite short – some around three minutes, some almost only 60 seconds – making for a really fresh approach to the solo piano genre, and one that almost has Abdullah painting these wonderful little pictures in sound! The brevity of the tunes is no reflection of their depth – as Ibrahim really packs a lot into the small space focusing his ideas wonderfully, and moving through some dark themes that really hold us in rapt attention throughout. Titles include "Jabulani", "Mamma", "Bayana Children Of Africa", "In The Evening", "Ocean & The River", "Blue Bolero", "For Coltrane", "Dust", "Tookah", and "Blues For A Hip King". CD

✨✧ Dollar Brand (Abdullah Ibrahim)African Piano ... CD
Japo/ECM (Germany), 1969. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Haunting solo work from Dollar Brand – recorded live in Copenhagen, with a sound that's full of tone, texture, and subtle beauty! Dollar Brand is one of the few players that can hold us rapt with a session like this – and as with his trio and larger group work, the tunes have an intrinsic sense of rhythm that's really wonderful – a slow-building sound that draws on Brand's African roots, and has the notes cascading over one another in this shifting patterns that are totally great! Titles include "Bra Joe From Kilamanjaro", "Selby That The Eternal Spirit Is The Only Reality", "The Moon", "Xaba", "Sunset In Blue", "Kippy", "Jabulani Easter Joy", and "Tintiyana". CD
(Out of print and sealed.)

✨✧ Hugh MasekelaPromise Of A Future ... LP
Uni, Late 60s. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Classic work from Hugh Masekela – and the album that pushed him over the top! The record features his version of "Grazin In The Grass", a runaway instrumental hit when it was issued – and a sly little groover that was based upon some earlier South African pop melodies that Hugh copped from his roots. The group's a tight little quintet with Al Abreu on tenor and soprano sax, William Henderson on piano, Chuck Carter on drums, and Henry Franklin on bass. The whole thing's great – and tracks include "Stop", "Bajabula Bonke", "There Are Seeds To Sow", "Vuca", "Almost Seedless", and "No Face, No Name, and No Number". LP, Vinyl record album
(Original pressing. Cover has light wear and a hype sticker.)

✨✧ VariousIce Cream & Suckers – South African Soul ... LP
Mercury, Early 60s. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
An incredible album of early 60s soul tracks from South Africa – issued here in the US by Mercury! The record's got some amazing stuff – including at least 2 tracks that seem to be directly ripped off later by Hugh Masekela for "Grazing in the Grass". Titles include "Brown Pepper" by Cassius The Great, "Ice Cream & Suckers" by Soweto Stockvel Septette, "Mr Bull No 4" by Mr. Bull, "Sweetie Love" by Jabulani Quads, "School In" by SDV Swing Band, and "Lindi" by TV Sisters. Great stuff! LP, Vinyl record album
(A nice copy! Cover has a very small cutout hole.)
