JK & CoSuddenly One Summer (colored vinyl pressing) ... LP
White Whale/Beat Rocket, 1968. New Copy (reissue)... $23.99 24.99
A completely amazing bit of psychedelia – recorded in Vancouver by the very young Jay Kaye, who was just 15 at the time – but done with a sound that easily rivals some of the more trippy classics from the big names of the late 60s! The record's got this perfect blend of tunefulness and way-out modes – songs that are certainly sometimes as catchy as material by the Beatles, both other times maybe as blue as work by the Tims of the time, Buckley and Hardin – served up with instrumentation that often echoes Eastern modes, but in the right sort of subtle way – mixed with a bit of fuzz and echo. Way more than the usual obscure oddity set – one that truly has classic depth – with titles that include "Fly", "Break Of Dawn", "Little Children", "Speed", "The Times", "Magical Fingers Of Minerva", and "Dead". Right NowUp All Night (original, Buscrates remix, Liquid Pegasus remix)/If It Was You (original, Liquid Pegasus dub mix, JKriv remix) ... 12-inch
Star Creature, 2019. Near Mint- ... $6.99
Two great cuts from this Chicago soul combo – both offered up with some tasty remix work too! "Up All Night" has a clubby anthemic vibe – very fitting to the spirit of the title, and the pulsating remixes ensure that the cut could definitely play until the dawn! "If It Was You" is a wonderful cut too – maybe more of a soul tune overall, with some great spirit – and we like the original better than the mixes. 12-inch, Vinyl record

✨✧ Erwin Somer GroupErwin Somer Group ... LP
Universe (Netherlands), 1973. New Copy (reissue)... $29.99
A vibes, percussion, and Fender Rhodes masterpiece – and one that's got some really hard-driving percussion as well! The set's maybe the only one we've ever seen from Dutch musician Erwin Somer – both a vibist and a percussionist, working here strongly in both modes – in a very hip quintet that also features Helmig Van De Vegt on Fender Rhodes and Rudy Van Dijk on tenor – two equally obscure players, but who really make the whole thing great! Tracks are all quite long, and have that loose blend of funk and more exploratory elements we love on the Placebo records from the same time – and the Rhodes is often played with a much harder edge than used on American 70s jazz sessions. Titles include "De Yssel", "Kobus & Tim", "Maatje", "De Veerpoint". and a version of the Keith Jarrett tune "Grow Your Own". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ VariousOriginal Raw Soul Vol III ... LP
Now Again, Late 90s/2000s. Near Mint- 2LP ... $34.99
The long-awaited third volume Original Raw Soul – a set that pulls together rare funky soul singles by the revolving roster of players led by the Whitefield Brothers – singles that ultimately became just as rare as the obscure funk 45s that inspired them! Nowadays, The Whitefield Brothers, their Poets Of Rhythm and associated acts can be credited for spurring the funk & raw soul revival of the 00s onward. At the time, some of the singles would appear and be hyped as reissues of regional rarities from back in the day – and they're so damn authentic, it was pretty easy to believe! Straight up raw funk instros, some jazzier gems with flute and female vox, organ-drenched jams and more credited to New Process, Poets Of Rhythm, Karl Hector & The Malcouns, Bajka, Whitefield Brothers, Polyversal Souls and more! Includes "Bus People Theme" and "Freedom" by New Process, "Summer Days (Instrumental)" and "Flight To St Vincent" by Poets Of Rhythm, "A Vision" and "The Only Religion That I Believe" by Bajka, "$600 Song" and "Banana Republic" by Mercy Sluts, "Muswell Hill Run" by Polyversal Souls, "The Bastard" and "Savannahstan" by Whitefield Brothers and more. ✨✧ Rita HovinkLove Me Or Leave Me (180 gram pressing with CD) ... LP
Decca/678 Records (Netherlands), 1969. New Copy (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Ultra-hip vocals from Rita Hovink – a Dutch singer who's got a way of making even familiar material sound pretty darn fresh! Rita's working here with a cool combo that's got a great sense of arrangement – a way of opening up the tunes and finding some unusual instrumental modes that really pave the way for Hovink's vocal interpretations. The group features Rob Van Dijk on both piano and Hammond, and Wim Overgaauw on guitar – and a few tracks feature guest instrumentation from either Carl Schulze on vibes, Harry Verbeke on tenor, or Thijs Van Leer on flute. The tunes are almost all familiar, but done in very cool ways – and titles include "Sunrise Sunset", "Softly As In A Morning Sunrise", "After You've Gone", "Don't Sleep In The Subway", "Goodbye Charlie", "Little Man You've Had A Busy Day", and "The Fool On The Hill". ✨✧ Ruud BosSecret All-Star Band – Studio Sessions 1964 to 1969 (with bonus tracks) ... CD
NJA (Netherlands), Mid 60s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Hard-swinging work from the pen of Dutch arranger/conductor Ruud Bos – a large group talent whose music here reminds us a lot of the Quincy Jones albums for Mercury in the early 60s! As with Quincy, there's a great blend of sophistication and soul – charts that are fully aware of all the modern changes in tone and color, but which also never fail to groove – and which feature standout solo performances throughout – delivered by a host of top-shelf talents who include Harry Verbeke on tenor, Piet Noordijk on alto, Cees Smal on trumpet, Cees Slinger on piano, and Jacques Schols on bass – all artists who've given us some great albums of their own over the years. Bos himself plays piano and vibes – and the set even features some early work from pianist Misha Mengelberg – on a set of tracks that include "Three Seconds", "Lutuli", "Sad Model", "Harry's Prize", "Gitanes", "ID", "Summernight", "Surprise To Bob", "Monk's Dream", and "On Green Dolphin Street". ✨✧ Muriel GrossmannGolden Rule ... CD
Dreamland (Austria), 2019. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Searing work from saxophonist Muriel Grossmann – a player who clearly draws a lot of inspiration from late 60s John Coltrane – but who also turns out a record here that's completely her own! The tracks are long, modal, and very spiritual – and the group has an unusual balance between Grossmann's tenor and soprano, and the guitar of Radomir Milojkovic – whose edgey tones here almost remind us of some of the trippier 60s sounds from Gabor Szabo! The group also features pulsing rhythms from Gina Schwarz on bass and Urus Stamenkovic on drums – a duo who really push things forward, and keep the soulful spirit of the music intact – but it's clearly Grossmann who's the lead star here, as she really blows us away with her work on both tenor and soprano! This is deep stuff – not an easy nod to the spiritual scene, but a much richer record – extremely well-conceived and executed. Titles include "Golden Rule", "Core", "Traneing In", "Trane", "Light", and "Direction". CD

✨✧ Muriel GrossmannEarth Tones ... CD
Dreamland (Austria), 2015. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Earth tones from saxophonist Muriel Grossmann – plenty of which have this wonderfully organic quality, as she really spins things out nicely on soprano throughout this fantastic debut! Grossmann's got this energy that really pushes forward from 70s spiritual modes – almost more in tune with the planet at times than just driven by her own spirit – as she stretches out on very long tracks that are balanced with very evocative work on guitar from Radomir Milojkovic – a player who uses sounds as much as notes, but can build into more rhythmic passages when needed. The group also features Robert Landfermann on bass and Christian Lillinger on drums – and titles include "Earth Tones", "Hope", "Sharing", "Earth Call", "Wisdom", "Unconditional Love", and "Hope". ✨✧ Muriel GrossmannMomentum ... CD
Dreamland (Austria), 2017. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Great work from one of the most important saxophonists to emerge in recent years – the mighty Muriel Grossmann, a player who seems to be more and more on fire with each new record! Grossmann's a very strong-voiced talent – first on soprano sax, which was her initial calling card – and here both on alto and tenor, set up in a strongly modal group that has fantastic basslines throughout – really driving the music – while the drummer ranges more freely, and guitarist Radomir Milojkovic provides a really key part of the group's unique sound! Where some might have used a piano, Muriel's putting the guitar in just the right spot – able to handle rhythm and melody effortlessly, all with this wide palette of colors and tone that really illuminates the record. Yet Grossmann's sound is still key throughout – rich, spiritual, and incredibly soulful – on titles that include "Chant", "Sacred", "Horizon", "Momentum", "Elevation", and "Gratitude". CD

✨✧ Muriel GrossmannNatural Time ... CD
Dreamland (Austria), 2016. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A real step forward for saxophonist Muriel Grossmann – as the set seems to have a new sort of fire that wasn't there on her debut – as Grossmann and quartet open up to embrace the world of modal rhythms! The tunes here all have this fantastic sense of pulse – energy that comes from these sublime basslines by Gina Schwarz, balanced with open-ended drumming from Uros Stamenkovic, and given all these warm colors by guitarist Radomir Milojkovic – a player who's equally brilliant on the record as Grossmann – who blows both soprano sax and alto, each with this amazingly intuitive sense of a solo – as if her spirit is effortlessly flowing through the horns. Titles include "African Dance", "Peace For All", "Bliss", "Natural Time", "Lightning", "Your Pace", and "Happiness". CD

Free CooperationFree Cooperation – Polish Radio Jazz Archives Vol 18 (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Polskie Radio (Poland), 1985. New Copy ... $9.99
Soaring work from a Polish ensemble of the 80s – a group who definitely have some of the free cooperation promised by their name – but also resonate with a range of other elements too! At some level, these guys remind us of the more inventive bigger bands that broke on the European scene at the end of the 60s – especially those famously recorded by MPS – but they also sparkle here with touches from both the Polish free jazz and fusion worlds of the 70s – as they can be tight one minute, use electric elements the next, yet still let some of their soloists step out in very striking ways. We don't recognize the players from other groups or records – and we know a fair bit of other Polish jazz – but we can say that the ensemble features three trumpets, alto sax, other reeds, trombone, guitar, piano, bass, and drums. Titles are compositions by Wojciech Konikiewicz and Wojciech Czajkowski – and titles include "56", "Promotion", "Swingu Dangu", "Bartek 23 In Short", and "Klaus Patera". CD

VariousJazz Room – Compiled By Paul Murphy ... LP
BBE (UK), 2019. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Just Sold Out!
A really great collection of jazzy groovers – one that effortlessly combines older material and newer recordings, all with a great ear that never tires in its pursuit of the groove! The blend of old and new is a bit like some of the collections we used to love from Gilles Peterson back in the last century – but Paul Murphy definitely has his own style and way of choosing a tune, and like Peterson, he has a great way of setting a new sort of fire with jazz – one that will burn strongly for generations to come! Titles include "Yatra-Ta" by Terje Terasmaa, "African Mailman" by Rhythmagic Orchestra, "Smells Like Teen Spirit" by Blue Mode, "Foot In The Door" by Onward International, "Zombie" by Art Ensemble Of Chicago, "Emnete (live)" by Imperial Tiger Orchestra, "4 Beat Cha Cha Cha" by Lucas Van Merwijk & His Cubop City Big Band, "Tribute To Mulatu" by Patchworks, "Koumba Fri Fri" by Mamelon, "Sorrow Tears & Blood" by Shola Adisa Farrar & Florian Pellissier Quartet, and "Mambo De La Pinta" by Art Pepper. Sony (UK), 1993. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... $32.99 37.99
The group's first full length album – and a classic batch of soulful funky tunes, handled with the charm and care that would make Jamiroquai one of the best new soul acts to come out of the UK during the 90s. Think Brand New Heavies meets Stevie Wonder meets Steely Dan, and you'll get only part of the picture – as Jay and crew work things together perfectly, blending a wide range of influences into a globally conscious cosmic groove that's a perfect soul platform for the 21st century! 10 tracks: "Didgin' Out", "When You Gonna Learn (JK mix)", "Too Young To Die", "Music Of The Mind", "Hooked Up", "If I Like It I Do It", "Whatever It Is I Just Can't Stop", "Blow Your Mind", "Revolution 1993", and "Emergency On Planet Earth". VariousAfrica Airways 5 – Brace Brace Boogie 1976 to 1982 ... LP
Africa Seven (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy ... $22.99
Africa Airways takes to the skies again – and delivers a wonderful batch of funky soul tracks from the end of the 70s and start of the 80s! The work here is from a period when groups from Nigeria and other scenes were starting to absorb a lot more direct influences from American soul – especially clubbier modes of the disco generation, which were used to create a homespun variety of boogie – in a mode that really dominates this set! Lots of these tracks have upbeat vibes, tight rhythms, and strongly soulful elements in the lead – and titles include "Fine Biscuits" by Dikalo, "Angona Mana" by Mekongo President, "Chibidaba Chibidaba" by JK Mandengue, "Sugar Lump (edit)" by Tala AM, "French Girl" by Fotso, "Dashiki (inst)" by Mulamba, and "Too Young" by Jide Obe.
