Big Jullien & His All Stars (Ivan Jullien)Riviera Sound No 1 ... CD
Riviera/Sonorama (Germany), 1970. New Copy ... $8.99 16.99
Fantastic French grooves from the end of the 60s – a killer set of jazz-based tracks recorded by trumpeter Ivan Jullien, with help from funky arranger Michel Colombier! Jullien recorded a fair bit of jazz and studio work around the time, and his playing here is razor-sharp – and supported by Colombier grooves that rival his best soundtrack material, his experiments with Pierre Henry, or his backings for singers like Serge Gainsbourg or Brigitte Bardot! Colombier also plays keyboards on the record, as does the great Maurice Vander – amidst a host of other great French jazzmen who include Pierre Gossez on sax, Roger Guerin on additional trumpet, and Eddie Louiss on organ. Drums are nice and funky on most cuts – and the whole thing kicks even more than most funky big band records on MPS! Includes the great break cut "I Remember Otis" – plus "Sonoro", "The Looser", "Talk", "An Oscar For Eddy", "Wake The Monster", "Edith", and "Crescendo". CD

Raymond FolRediscovering Raymond Fol ... CD
Fresh Sound (Spain), Late 50s/1960s. New Copy 2CD ... $24.99 28.99
A deep dive into the work of pianist Raymond Fol as a leader – material that includes a number of rare broadcast tracks, and a handful of records that have Fol in the spotlight – something that didn't happen all that much, even though Raymond played on dozens of important sessions for other musicians on the French scene! The set begins with Fol's initial four track EP for Columbia, a trio date that's followed by more live recordings in Paris – then steps into an assortment of unusual dates from the late 50s – including two tracks with singer Annie Fratellini, three with trumpeter Nonzio Rotondo and tenorist Enzo Scoppa, and more trio recordings as well. CD2 features rare broadcast material from the 60s – including one title with Donald Byrd on trumpet, and six more with a septet that also includes Ivan Jullien and Roger Guerin on trumpets! The package has copious notes on Fol and his contribution to the postwar scene in Paris – and the 2CD collection features a massive 38 tracks in all, with titles that include "Hush", "Melancholia", "Scandinavian", "Lazy Lady Daisy", "John's Groove", "Tune Up", "Circeo", "Thrilling", "Oh My Lord", "Out Of Art", "Where Is Salvador", and "Little Niles". ✨✧ Guy SkornikPour Pauwels ... CD
EMI/Lion, 1971. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Lost legendary work from Guy Skornik – a heady set from early 70s France, and proof that there's a hell of a lot of greatness to discover on that scene! The album's got a blend of psych fuzz and deeper ideas that's not that far from Serge Gainsbourg – although the overall presentation is more cerebral, and influenced by the ideas of GI Gurdjieff, carried out by Skornik in this sublime blend of acoustic elements and larger orchestrations directed by jazzman Ivan Jullien! Like some of the best French work of this time, the album has a wonderful balance between the personal and professional – the intimate and the ambitious – which really makes things exciting and fresh, and very different than anything you might have been digging on this side of the Atlantic at the time. Titles include "Realite", "L'Ile De Paques", "Fulcanni", "Je Vois Ce Que Je Crois", "Quest Ce Que Le Dream", and "Je Ne Sais Pas Je Ne Sais Plus Rien". CD

✨✧ Patrick Greussay & Stephane VilarLes Idoles (violent vinyl pressing) ... LP
Monster Melodies (France), 1967. New Copy Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A really cool record that was done for a strange 60s film about pop singers – one that features some rockish tunes that fit the spirit of the movie, but also some groovy instrumentals that spice things up in a mighty nice way! Most tunes are short, as these are the versions recorded for the film – and the vocals are done by the "idoles" who appear in the story, but the instrumentation is all handled by the Rollsticks – a group put together for the project, which features contributions from important French musicians who include jazzmen Michel Portal and Ivan Jullien, and the great Didier Malherbe – later of Gong fame. Titles include "Non Papa", "Youpelle", "Je Suis Seul", "Viens Dans Mon Coeur", "Du Byrrh", "La Meme", "Une Jaguar", "Number One Dance", "Danse Crawl", and "Les Gretschen". LP, Vinyl record album
