Gene Barge, David Matthews, & Andre DavisStony Island – Original Soundtrack ... CD
TK/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1978. New Copy ... About December 18, 2019
A sweet set of soundtrack funk – from a film named after one of our favorite streets in Chicago! Although the record's got an approach that's perhaps a bit tighter and smoother than anything going down on Stony in the late 70s, it does manage to share a good deal of styles with the Chi-soul scene of the time – thanks to work on the record from Chicagoans Gene Barge, Sonny Seals, and Tennyson Stephens! Many of the tracks on the set have a bad-walking soul approach – one that's kind of a mixture of funky and bluesy – and these are laid out next to some jazzier instrumentals that we like most of all – tunes that have a great funky soundtrack feel, but with a bit more fusion touches than usual, probably because of the work of David Matthews. Titles include "Percy Fired", "Party Lights", "High Speed Posters", "Back To Business", "Chase The Train", "Gangster City", "Dream Ride", and "Peace Of Mind". CD

Robin Jaffee FrankConey Island – Visions Of An American Dreamland 1861 to 2008 (hardcover) ... Book
Yale University Press, 2015. New Copy ... $16.99 35.00
Coney Island is a hell of a place – a refuge for New Yorkers for over 100 years, and still pretty amazing today – with a surprisingly strong legacy that also includes the park's influence on more serious artists over the decades, a legacy that's presented beautifully in this oversize book! The volume's not a glossy presentation of the tourist mecca – but instead a very well-done, well-researched art book – featuring paintings, photographs, film stills, and other images that show the way that Coney Island figured in the larger high art community in and around New York – representations by folks as diverse as Weegee, Woody Allen, Robert Mapplethorpe, Bruce Davidson, Reginald Marsh, and dozens of others. The large book is a monograph for a museum exhibit, but clearly goes far beyond the event – and also features text by Charles Musser, Robin Jaffee Frank, Josh Glick, and others. 286 heavy hardcover pages – with color and black and white images throughout! ✨✧ Jeff Lorber FusionWizard Island ... LP
Arista, 1980. Near Mint- ... $4.99
A real classic from Jeff Lorber – the kind of record that crossed-over immediately, and had a huge influence on so many different scenes! The style is smooth sweet fusion – of a sort that Lorber virtually helped invent, and so many others helped to ruin in later years – but here, things are clean and lean, very focused on the groove – and coming off with a really soulful sound! There's a great mix of acoustic and electric keys that really makes the album cook – giving it a two-dimensional feel that really comes off nicely on every tune – and the core lineup includes Lorber on keys, plus electric bass, drums, and saxes. Titles include "Wizard Island", "Lava Lands", "Shadows", "City", "Rooftops", and "Can't Get Enough". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Jean-Luc PontyCanteloupe Island (King Kong/Jean-Luc Ponty Experience With The George Duke Trio) ... CD
Capitol/BGO (UK), 1969. Used 2CD ... $16.99
A great double-header – one that features 2 classic Jean-Luc Ponty albums from the 60s! Record one presents the album King Kong – an album that features Ponty, who was working with Frank Zappa at the time, playing a set of electric jazz takes on Zappa tunes – with lots of added help from George Duke, who was also working with Zappa too! The set's almost a "birth of fusion" one – with Zappa arrangements that are clearly in a jazz-rock mode – and lots of electric bass, electric piano, and electric violin in the set. Tracks are long, and riff-heavy – and other players include Ernie Watts, Wilton Felder, Buell Neidlinger, and Ian Underwood. Titles include "America Drinks & Goes Home", "Music For Electric Violin & Low Budget Orchestra", "King Kong", and "Twenty Small Cigars". Record two features The Jean Luc Ponty Experience With The George Duke Trio – a much better album than you'd expect, without any of the noodling of the players' later albums! At the time of this set, Duke and Ponty are breaking out of the hippie weirdness of the Zappa records, and get a bit more serious – working through some long, extended modal grooves that rank with the best MPS work by either player. Duke's on electric piano, ringing out in a weird spacy sound, and Ponty's violin is mostly restrained, used to cast waves of sound over the top of the tracks, in a way that works well with Duke's soulful resonant approach. Titles include "Foosh", "Cantaloupe Island", and "Starlight Starbright". CD

✨✧ Toots & The MaytalsFunky Kingston (Island version) ... CD
Mango, 1971. Used ... $9.99
Masterful early 70s reggae from Toots & The Maytals – released first in 1971, and first reissued with this killer tracklist a few years later into the 70s – and flat out classic! The reggae rhythms are steeped in raw soul and R&B for truly distinctive vibe. Breezy Caribbean sounds that meld with heavy soul for an overall vibe that paved the way for most massively popular reggae music of all time. It does get much more wonderful than this, folks! The Island version essentially pairs up material from the original Funky Kingston release with alternate numbers from the In The Dark LP – and titles include the incredible "Time Tough", "Pomp And Pride", "Funky Kingston" and "Pressure Drop", cool covers of "Louie Louie" and Country Roads", ""Sailin' On" and more. ✨✧ VariousAlefa Madagascar – Salegy, Soukous, & Soul From The Red Island 1974 to 1984 ... CD
Strut (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A really riveting collection of music from a scene that we've hardly heard much from before – upbeat grooves from the island nation of Madagascar, all recorded at the end of the 70s and start of the 80s – but with a vibe that sounds much older overall! The one thing that really stands out in a number of these tracks is the strong use of organ and keyboards – often in this full, swirling sort of style – infusing the grooves next to the more familiar percussion and guitar lines you might hear in other African music from the generation – although even those elements are used in ways that are pretty darn unique! The tracks often have this raw intensity that comes from both the instrumentation and the way things are put together – and the whole package is a really refreshing change from other oft-tread musical territory on the continent. Titles include "Mama" by Roger Georges, "Andosy Mora" by Jean Kelly Et Bastn, "Ngoma Hoe" by Papa James, "Izahay Mpamita" by Mahaleo, "Faraina" by Feon'Ala, "Soaliza" by Terak Anosy Group, "Oa Niny E" by Nino Rafah, "Razana Tsy Ho Meloko" by Michael, "Jazz Sega" by Jeannot Rabeson Et Son Orchestre, "Tokatoka" by Kaiamba Orchestra, "Zaka Tiako Mamolaka Keriko" by Atrefy Andriana, and "Andeha Hanarato" by Los Matadores. ✨✧ DeodatoLove Island ... LP
Warner, 1978. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Late 70s work from Deodato – quite different than his bossa organ work of the 60s, and early 70s funk sides – but pretty darn great nonetheless! The album shows Deodato's continuing shift towards a more soul-based sound – and it mixes together a smoother club sound with jazzier elements of earlier work, all going for a sweet groove that has plenty of traces of modern soul! The highlight of the album is "Whistle Bump", a strident slick groover with washes of horns behind the keyboards and a nice conga breakdown in the middle. Other tracks include "Area Code 808", "Pina Colada", "Tahiti Hut", "San Juan Sunset", and "Love Island". LP, Vinyl record album

Polygram (Japan), 2000. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
One of the best entries in Monday Michiru's yearly cycle of EP releases – and a sophisticated batch of jazz vocal tracks that takes her to a whole new level! The record's got a hip sound that reminds us of classic work by Dee Dee Bridgewater or Carmen Lundy – as Monday works with tight jazz backing, and sings in a spiritual introspective style that we'd reserve for only the work of a rare few singers! The ep's got 3 songs in all, all fairly long – and they work together beautifully as a discrete LP of jazzy soul from one of our favorite singers! CD

A really great set as a leader from reedman Larry Nozero – a player who's probably best known for his 70s work with Eddie Russ, but who sounds totally great here on his own – with the same flowing grace and sense of soul he brought to his other work! The album's an acoustic one – with John Katalenic on piano, driving the group with some long-soaring lines that provide plenty of dynamic energy for Nozero's solos, especially on sax. Titles are all originals too – and include "Bonnie Ann", "Seven Eleven", "Song For My Mother", "Pranzalito", and "Island Fever". LP, Vinyl record album

A tough record to peg – but a great one too! Wally Badarou plays a range of spacey keyboards that include synclavier, mini moog, and prophet 5 – all over some beats that are a mix of electro and Carribean rhythms – in a style that's part jazzy, part new agey, and part 80s groove! The record's an unusual one, but it's pretty darn compelling – especially from a vantage point of the many years since it was recorded – because Badarou's clearly years ahead of his time, working here in a style that predates many changes to come in electronic music of the 21st century! Tracks include "Endless Race", "Jungle", "Rain", "Keys", "Mambo", and "Canyons". CD

Island (UK), 1980. Very Good+ ... $14.99
UK West Indian ex-pats in vaguely sci-fi looking outfits team up with Martin Hannett for a blistering set of post punk guitar slashing that sadly seems to have become mostly a side bar in the history of the 80s UK scene – although sometime singer Don Letts did start Big Audio Dynamite later. None of the dubby effects of their singles and little of the reggae influence are at work here, but it's still worthy of more than a passing listen! 9 tracks in all, including "Riot", "No Ball Games", "Hard Work", "Immigration", "Last White Christmas", "Heavy Traffic", "Union Games", "Too Soon" and "Omega Man". Jorge BenTropical ... CD
Island/Oficial Arquivos, 1976. Used ... $8.99
One of the few albums that Jorge Ben recorded for the US market – and a tight set of tunes that grooves with a heavy samba soul sound! The album features new versions of some of Jorge's older tunes, done here with a small combo that mixes electric piano, organ, guitar, and lots of percussion into the grooves – a fresh, lively and exciting approach for the mid 70s period, but timelessly so – it's as incredible now as ever! The whole album's tight, lively, and soulful – and tracks include a madly percussive take on "Taj Mahal", plus "Pais Tropical", "Chegandos Os Alquimistas", "Chove Chuva", "My Lady", "Mas Que Nada", and "Jesus De Praga". ✨✧ By All MeansBy All Means ... CD
Island, 1988. Used ... $14.99
Warm soul from By All Means – a key group in the quiet storm soul years of the mid 80s – one that's equally well-suited to mellow numbers and more upbeat groovers! The trio features two male vocalists and one female – Jimmy Varner, Billy Sheppard, and Lynn Roderick – but the style of the record often has one singer coming out strongly in the lead, while the other two harmonize sweetly to warm things up at just the right moments. The beats are a bit heavy, but still quite far from some of the too-clunky commercial modes of the time – and the set features a bit of a jazzy undercurrent, which makes for a nicely classy sound. Titles include "I Surrender To Your Love", "Let's Get Started Now", "Does It Feel Good To You", "We're Into This Groove", "I Believe In Y ou", and "I'm The One Who Loves You". CD

John CaleSlow Dazzle ... LP
Island, 1975. Very Good ... $19.99
Dazzling work from John Cale – exactly the kind of record that shows why his solo years were so great! The record's got this unusual vibe – on one hand, it's put together like a more conventional rock set of the time – but on the other, it's got strange dark currents that run through the whole thing in very weird ways – a bit like some of the Roxy Music edges from the early years. No surprise, both Brian Eno and Phil Manzanera contribute strongly to the set – but the energy of the record definitely comes from Cale's great songwriting and offbeat vocals – and his great ear for a weird-sounding tune. Titles include "Mr Wilson", "Rollaroll", "Ski Patrol", "Guts", "The Jeweller", and Cale's famous version of "Heartbreak Hotel". LP, Vinyl record album

A record that's not only a landmark in Jamaican music – but also a set that was to reggae what Curtis Mayfield's Superfly was to 70s soul! In other words, the set not only raised the bar for all the competition, it also ended up in a lot more record collections than most of them too – maybe in part because it was a soundtrack, as was Superfly – but also because it has this global power that makes it a defining album of the genre! Jimmy Cliff is obviously the mainman here, but there's help from other key players in the growing reggae scene – and titles include Jimmy's classic "You Can Get It If You Really Want", in two versions – plus two takes on "The Harder They Come", "Many Rivers To Cross", and "Sitting In Limbo" – plus "Sweet & Dandy" and "Pressure Drop" by The Maytals, "007" by Desmond Dekker, "Johnny Too Bad" by The Slicers, "Draw Your Brakes" by Scotty, and "Rivers Of Babylon" by The Melodians. Nick DrakeFive Leaves Left (deluxe box set – with poster, download, and more) ... LP
Island, 1969. New Copy (reissue)... $53.99 59.98
Godlike work from the legendary Nick Drake – and exactly the kind of record that's made him a continuing legend over the years! The style is completely its own – not really folk or rock, but not really jazz either – yet served up with plenty of jazzy phrasing that's helped keep Drake's music fresher than most as the decades move on – and which makes each song here a really rich discovery – even if, like us, you've heard the album hundreds of times in the past! The production is wonderful – with slight underscorings of strings that help unlock dark corners of the songs – and tracks include the classic "River Man" – easily one of Nick's best songs ever – plus "Fruit Tree", "Day Is Done", "Three Hours", "Saturday Sun", and "Time Has Told Me". A record we'd never part with – ever! Brian EnoHere Come The Warm Jets ... LP
Island (UK), 1973. Very Good ... $29.99
A record that blew the world away when it was first released – and still continues to delight all these many years later! Brian Eno had first rose to fame in Roxy Music – where his sonic sensibilities and ear for electronic experimentation really added a lot to their initial albums – and here, on his own, he's in somewhat side-stepped territory – mixing things up in the art/glam generation of Roxy and Bowie, but also already showing a darkness that really sets him apart from the pack! The first three songs alone are a hell of a statement from any musician in the 70s, and the titles alone almost get at their impact – "Needles In The Camel's Eye", "The Paw Paw Negro Blowtorch", and "Baby's On Fire" – all songs that offer a rare blend of ferocity and humor that wouldn't emerge elsewhere until the punk movement. Yet Eno's hardly the forerunner of punk, but he's also not glam, metal, or anything else – a supremely impactful artist with this record, completely in his own space – like a rare breed that might include The Velvet Underground, Gram Parsons, or Bowie. Titles include "Needles In The Camel's Eye", "The Paw Paw Negro Blowtorch", "Baby's On Fire" "Blank Frank", "Some Of Them Are Old", "Cindy Tells Me", "On Some Faraway Beach", and "Dead Finks Don't Talk". Fairport ConventionLiege & Lief (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Island (UK), 1970. New Copy ... $8.99 11.98
A record that really has Fairport Convention knocking it out of the park – making a bold turn towards British traditional music, but in a way that imbues these relics with a whole new life of their own! The album came at a key turning point – after an accident that took one of their members, and which almost saw the group disband – but instead turn towards the past for even deeper inspiration than some of their contemporaries, whom they'd covered on other records – at a level that seems to set Sandy Denny free into this sublime territory of her own! Denny's vocals are incredible – like a thing unlocked from some ancient vault – and they're given this wonderful focus through the growing complexity of Richard Thompson's guitar work, and the understated brilliance of Ashley Hutchings' bass – both of which bring in these modal inflections that are very 60s, and hardly conceived of as accompaniment with the original tunes. The result is tremendous – tunes that are completely transformed, as a touchstone for generations. Titles include "Matty Groves", "Reynardine", "Come All Ye", "The Deserter", "Tam Lin", and "Crazy Man Michael". Features two bonus tracks – both previously unissued – "Quiet Joys Of Brotherhood" and "Sir Patrick Spens". CD

Mike HarrisonMike Harrison/Smokestack Lightning/Rainbow Rider ... CD
Island/BGO (UK), Early 70s. New Copy 2CD ... Just Sold Out!
Three overlooked albums by British singer Mike Harrison – all brought together in a single set! First up is the self-titled Mike Harrison – a wonderful solo debut from the singer who made Spooky Tooth sound so great on their albums, maybe even sounding better here on his own! The album is clearly conceived and put together by Mike – with backup help from The Junkyard Band, who underscore the yearning, earnest qualities in his vocals – spun out with a snakey, raspy charm, with a sound that's maybe a more intimate take on territory explored by Procol Harum. The songs are great, and the whole record has a quality level that really attests to the all-great quality of Island Records at this point – with tracks that include "Pain", "Lonely People", "Mother Nature", "Call It A Day", "Damian", and "Wait Until The Morning". Smokestack Lightning is great solo work from Mike Harrison, ex-Spooky Tooth – a fantastic singer who should have been huge as a solo act – maybe a bit like Colin Blunstone, whose sound with The Zombies was so important, but could never have a huge career on his own – even while he created some wonderful albums in the process! This set's a well-crafted gem through and through – recorded at Muscle Shoals, but with a sound that's free of any of the hoke of those oft-used studios – as instead of bending to southern modes, Harrison uses the ace musicians to underscore some of the depth of his own approach in a really great way. Titles include "Turning Over", "Wanna Be Free", "Tears", "What A Price", and "Paid My Dues". Rainbow Rider has Mike Harrison maybe hitting some harder rock territory than before, with some roots rock moments – more a part of the overall sound of the group, and with some pretty heavy guitars up there in the lead – which seems to bring out a very different quality in Mike's vocals. Titles include "Okay Lay Lady Lay", "Like A Road Leading Home", "Maverick Woman Blues", "You & Me", "I'll Keep It With Mine", and "Friend". CD

Seminal sounds from The Heptones – and a record that really helped the older trio style of Jamaican music find a new home in the 70s roots reggae years! The vocals here are every bit as much in harmony heaven as reggae trios from a few years before – but there's also a tighter, more righteous quality to the music that really makes the record a classic – with stunning lead vocals from Leroy Sibbles, fused tightly with the voices of Earl Morgan and Barry Llewellyn, in this style that's smoothly soulful, but still has a nicely edgey undercurrent too. The record was cut at Harry J's, with production that really steps past earlier Heptones work – and titles include "Country Boy", "Book Of Rules", "Deceivers", "In The Groove", "Love Won't Come Easy", "Fatty Fatty", and "Mama Say". Island/BGO (UK), 1976. New Copy ... $8.99 14.99
One of the strangest records ever from Ashley Hutchings – a set that's even more ancient-sounding and enigmatic than his music with Fairport Convention and Albion Band! In a sense, the album follows the spirit of both groups, and their effort to plumb the past and fuse it with the present – yet here, Hutchings is almost trying to create a documentary of old recordings – even though the material is all newly-recorded, but handled with a more ancient aesthetic that hearkens back to the 78rpm generation! Players aren't listed, and there's no credits at all – but it's pretty clear that Hutchings has some of his key Fairport Convention partners on board to help with the sound – which is served up in a mix of acoustic instrumental and vocal modes, sometimes with spoken introductions through each side-long collage of tunes. A classic disco stormer from Grace Jones – recorded at Sigma Sound with a real Philly groove, thanks to arrangements from John Monster Davis – and produced with a full, soaring sound from the legendary Tom Moulton! The set may well be Grace's true club classic from the late 70s – a record that works both on the quirky levels of her early rise to fame, and on the more soulful expectations mainstream clubgoers had at the time – a beautiful balance that owes plenty to the input from Davis and Moulton! Titles include "Do Or Die", "Pride", "Fame", "Below The Belt", and "Am I Ever Gonna Fall In Love In New York City". LP, Vinyl record album

A landmark little record from Grace Jones – a set that started off as one of those "hey, let's see if this model can sing" sort of records – but which has gone onto become an enduring classic! Most of the tunes are older ones, but they're remade with a soaring Sigma Sound groove by the best in Philly – taking sometimes-cloying lyrics and pushing them into hipper disco territory for the 70s – all with that odd wink and subtle sense of irony that would emerge more clearly in Jones' later records. Tom Moulton produced and mixed, and titles include "I Need A Man", "La Vie En Rose", "Sorry", "Tomorrow", "What I Did For Love", and "Send In The Clowns". CD

A record that's as upbeat as its title – and a set that returns Chaka Khan to the classic club territory of her 80s solo classics! The music is contemporary, but has lots of old school flavors underneath – hints of strings around the edges, and a warmth next to the beats – all bristling with a lively, snapping groove that pushes Chaka in ways we haven't heard in years – really unlocking that majestic power that's graced her best records from the Rufus years onwards – thanks to great production help from Switch, and David and Sarah Ruba Taylor. Titles include "Hello Happiness", "Don't Cha Know", "Too Hot", "Like Sugar", "Ladylike", "Isn't That Enough", and "Like A Lady". CD

Bob MarleyExodus ... LP
Island, 1977. Very Good+ ... $24.99
Maybe the best place to start if you're looking to dive into the short but incredible legacy of music left behind by Bob Marley – as the album marked a real global turning point for the singer, and includes a number of tracks that are still his standout classics after all these years! The set was recorded in London, but with a nicely understated sound – just the right focus on all the best elements of the Wailers sound – in a way that creates a magical flow throughout. And sure, some of the cuts here are some of Bob's biggest hits ever – but heard in the context of the core album, they've got a lot more righteous power than when they're cribbed for a commercial or a TV soundtrack. Titles include "Natural Mystic", "Three Little Birds", "One Love/People Get Ready", "Exodus", "So Much Things To Say", "Guiltiness", "The Heathen", "Jamming", "Waiting In Vain", and "Turn Your Lights Down Low". Quite possibly THE Bob Marley album – or at least the record that really exploded the man from the Jamaican scene into huge global fame – thanks to a universally soulful sound that moved the record way past the barriers that were holding the rest of Kingston sounds back from the mainstream! The record still has Bob working with the original Wailers lineup that includes Bunny Wailer and Peter Tosh – both of whom have enough of a presence here to really rise Marley up, and point him in the majestic direction he'd take on his later solo albums. The record features the classics "Get Up Stand Up" and "I Shot The Sherriff" – and other titles include "Duppy Conqueror", "One Foundation", "Pass It On", "Burnin & Lootin", "Hallelujah Time", and "Small Axe". Sweet grooves from the great Bob Marley – a set cut at a time when Marley was really riding his international fame – and able to create the kind of music that reached out way more than conventional reggae! The Kingston roots of the sound are still very firmly in place – but there's also a more globally-expansive vision here too – partly the tight production on the music, partly the warm feelings that ebb and flow throughout the entire set – a vibe that's very different than American soul, and which has turned out to be surprisingly encompassing over the years. Titles include "Is This Love", "Running Away", "Kaya", "Satisfy My Soul", "Easy Skanking", "Sun Is Shining", "She's Gone", "Misty Morning", "Crisis", and "Time Will Tell". LP, Vinyl record album

An album that may well be John Martyn's crowning moment of genius – a time when he soared forward from his spare sound of a few short years ago – and found a way to bring in all these jazzy currents to his music, but all without ever going for a style that was ever over-arranged or commercially produced! Martyn's voice is amazing – completely captivating, and full of all these wonderful twists and turns – as are his guitar lines too – never in any sort of overdone way, but with a subtle power that really gives the album the sort of glow that's evoked by the cover image. The set features guest work from Richard Thomposon, Roger Powell, and Beverley Martyn – and titles include "Go Easy", "Bless The Weather", "Sugar Lump", "Walk To The Water", "Just Now", "Head & Heart", "Let The Good Things Come", "Back Down The River", and "Singin In The Rain" – with a good amount of bonus tracks including alternate takes of "Go Easy", "Walk On Water", "Back Down The River", and a single version of "May You Never". A really beautiful little record from John Martyn – a set in which he's really perfected his talents, and found a way to stand out from just about anyone else in the pack – including the best of his British folk rock contemporaries! Martyn plays acoustic guitar, but the record's hardly folk at this point – because his vocals have all these jazzy changes, maybe a bit like Joni Mitchell was hitting at the same point in her career – more sophisticated, but very organic and never forced – with this quality that makes just about every word that comes from Martyn's voice resonate with a really fantastic quality. His guitar playing is as wonderful as ever – and again, filled with jazzy phrasing without ever being jazz at all – and the whole thing is maybe a record to proudly put Martyn in the company of Nick Drake on his few classics for Island. One of Nico's darkest albums – and the kind of record we always suggest to those who doubt her genius! The incredibly spare set has Nico playing harmonium, which makes for a spooky off-kilter sound that really gives the record a somber approach – especially as the instrument sounds a heck of a lot like her voice – very dark and moody, with lots of offbeat tones! Nico also gets some hip help, too – as the set features Brian Eno on keyboards, and production by John Cale – who also plays a huge variety of odd instruments too. Titles include a sublime 9 minute reading of The Doors' "The End", one that makes the original seem like candy floss – plus the tracks "Secret Side", "Innocent & Vain", "Valley Of The Kings", "We've Got The Gold", and "It Has Not Taken Long". Public Image Ltd.Second Edition ... LP
Island, 1979. Very Good 2LP Gatefold ... $19.99
One of the greatest moments ever from the mighty John Lydon – a record that maybe blows away all other albums by Public Image – and which also stands strongly next to the work of the Sex Pistols, but in a very different way! Lydon is quite far from punk rock roots here – and instead works in this bassy, dubby, trippy blend that's served up strongly by the bass work of Jah Wobble – very influenced by Jamaican music, but playing in a style that's got a very different vibe – and quite different from more familiar late 70s attempts to mix punk and reggae. Instead, Wobble and Lydon use the mode as this dark wash of sound – sparkling with weird guitar sounds from Keith Levine, and layered with these haunting lyrics on madness and paranoia – much more dark poetry than anything Lydon ever gave us. The track "Poptones" is worth the price of the record alone – and other tiles include "Swan Lake", "No Birds", "Chant", "No Radio", "Albatross", "Careering", and "Memories". LP, Vinyl record album

A further deepening of the Spooky Tooth sound – on an album that seems to have a headier approach to the lyrical themes, which is also echoed by the vocals of Gary Wright, and the energy of the rest of the group! These guys are still a blues-influenced rock group at the core – and are still hardly a progressive group at all – but they've also really opened up their palette on the tunes, and find ways of giving more than just the full-on fuzz of previous records, while still using that element to kick things in gear at all the right places! One of the most beautifully melodic albums ever from British reedman John Surman – a session that's almost cut in the same mode as Lol Coxhill's early 70s sides for Virgin, with Surman soloing strongly in the lead on a variety of saxes, while sparer sounds and notes echo out in the background! Surman's work on any chosen horn on the record is brilliant – free, but never too out – and wonderfully concerned with tone and sound. There's a really exploratory nature to the record – but one that's never mis-directed or lost. Surman's got a personal presence that's really amazing, and almost a level of soul that's made the record a favorite of ours for years! Island (UK), 1970. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The second album from the legendary Nick Drake – one of those records we could never ever live without – and a true piece of genius that's been turning on generations of listeners since Nick first recorded it back at the start of the 70s! The format is folksy, but the execution is something else entirely – filled with jazzy phrasing, hypnotic lyrics, and arrangements that really go far beyond any cliches or contemporary work you might expect. The great Joe Boyd produced – and really helps give a strong focus to Nick's vocals and guitar – and the cool mix of added instrumentation – which includes organ and celeste from John Cale, flute and alto from Ray Warleigh, piano from Chris McGregor, and guitar from Richard Thompson. Drake's work is impossible to describe adequately, but if you've ever heard him, you probably stopped dead in your tracks the minute you first caught his voice. We still do the same – and it's a pleasure to have this one in stock! Titles include "Fly", "At The Chime Of A City Clock", "Hazy Jane", "Poor Boy", and "One Of These Things First". LP, Vinyl record album
(US pressing on Antilles. Cover has light wear.)
