Alice Island BandSplendid Isolation ... LP
Warren/Wah Wah (Spain), 1974. New Copy (reissue)... $18.99
One of the more obscure outings from the British underground folk scene at the start of the 70s – a set that's way way different than contemporary work on the bigger labels, and which sounds as if it was conceived and recorded a fair bit away from the mainstream! The instrumentation is a mix of electric and acoustic guitar, electric bass, piano, and harmonium – with vocals by all three members of the trio, but in ways that are only partly harmonious – as some of the moments are more sung or spoken at cross-purposes – maybe with the energy of some of the madder parts of the Giles Giles & Fripp record, but more acoustic overall. Tunes were all penned by Roger Moore, who produced but doesn't play on the record – and titles include "Devil's Island", "Nickel Man", "Package Tour Mona Lisa", "Smoke", "Goodbye Cindy", and "The Man That I Am". Monsta Island CzarsCome Up ... LP
Dope Folks, Late 90s. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
Seven unreleased tracks from the Monsta Island Czars collective – material that's got a really strong sense of urgency, and which adds plenty to their too-small catalog! The MCs vary from track to track, which further deepens the sound – and some of the best moments are the cuts where two vocalists are going back to back. Titles include "Bip Bap" with King Cesar, "Mad World" with Kamackeris, "It's About Time" with Megalon and Trife, "You Never Know" with Spiga, "My Motive" with Megalon, "Hungry" with Kamackeris and Kong, and "Written In Blood" with Kong and Spiga. PaupersEllis Island (plus bonus tracks) ... CD
Pacemaker Entertainment, Late 60s. New Copy ... $5.99
The second album from The Paupers – a mix of searing guitar jams, more easygoing psychedelic pop bigger arrangements, even a little bit of a comic take on Byrdsy country rock– making for a pretty wild mix of sounds, but done with a focus on melodies and catchy grooves. The group is really stretching out and trying a lot of things on this second album, throwing caution into the wind as far as stylistic divergence goes, more often than not hitting the mark! Titles include "South Down Road", "Cairo Hotel", "Can't Go On", "Another Man's Hair On My Razor", "Ask Her Again" and more, plus the bonus tracks "If I Call You By Some Name", "Copper Penny" and "White Song". Strut (UK), 1960s/Early 70s. New Copy ... $13.99 14.99
A fantastic look at the groundbreaking sounds of the Disques Debs label – one of the most important companies producing music in the French Caribbean – and an imprint whose impact was strongly felt on the other side of the Atlantic as well! The core of these grooves is that compelling biguine rhythm that flowed from Guadeloupe – almost a mix of Latin and jazz, but with a different sort of vibe of its own – which was then interwoven with elements from Cuban, European, and African styles amidst the initial decade or so of recordings on this set! Debs had strong ties with Paris, and a bit with the West African scene – and their recorded legacy almost follows old colonial paths, but in reverse – creating this wonderful criss-crossing of cultures amidst their grooves. The package is wonderful – loads of vintage photos and great notes in the best Strut Records way – and titles include "Douce Kombass" by Henri Debs Quintet, "Mr Morin" by Joseph Lacides, "Lan Mise" by Geno Exilie, "Feeling Happy" by Cyril Dias Et Son Orchestre, "Ces P'Tits Je T'Aime" by Daniel Forestal Et Sa Guitare, "Assez Fait Cancan" by Guy Conquette, "Stanislas" by Eric Virgal, "Meringue Mondey" by Remy Mondey, "Si I Bon Di I Bon" by Le Ry-Co Jazz, "Salvana" by Dolor Et Les Diables Du Rhythme, and "Van Van" by Henri Guedon Et Les Contesta. ✨✧ Jeff Lorber FusionWizard Island ... LP
Arista, 1980. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A real classic from Jeff Lorber – the kind of record that crossed-over immediately, and had a huge influence on so many different scenes! The style is smooth sweet fusion – of a sort that Lorber virtually helped invent, and so many others helped to ruin in later years – but here, things are clean and lean, very focused on the groove – and coming off with a really soulful sound! There's a great mix of acoustic and electric keys that really makes the album cook – giving it a two-dimensional feel that really comes off nicely on every tune – and the core lineup includes Lorber on keys, plus electric bass, drums, and saxes. Titles include "Wizard Island", "Lava Lands", "Shadows", "City", "Rooftops", and "Can't Get Enough". LP, Vinyl record album

Masterful early 70s reggae from Toots & The Maytals – released first in 1971, and first reissued with this killer tracklist a few years later into the 70s – and flat out classic! The reggae rhythms are steeped in raw soul and R&B for truly distinctive vibe. Breezy Caribbean sounds that meld with heavy soul for an overall vibe that paved the way for most massively popular reggae music of all time. It does get much more wonderful than this, folks! The Island version essentially pairs up material from the original Funky Kingston release with alternate numbers from the In The Dark LP – and titles include the incredible "Time Tough", "Pomp And Pride", "Funky Kingston" and "Pressure Drop", cool covers of "Louie Louie" and Country Roads", ""Sailin' On" and more. King Sunny AdeAura ... LP
Island, 1984. Very Good+ ... $14.99
A crucial record in the early days of the global scene in the 80s – a set that lifts the music of King Sunny Ade from its roots in Nigeria, and mixes it up with some fresh elements that really open things up for a world's worth of ears! The approach isn't commercial – at least not in the modes of the later world music years – but there's occasional elements that echo the beat culture rising up in New York and London, mixed with the warmer sounds that were always at Sunny's music – especially that way of making the acoustic percussion and basslines come together in flowing waves of completely sublime sound! All tracks are nice and long – and titles include "Gboromiro", "Oremi", "Ire", "Iro", "Ogunja", and "Ase". LP, Vinyl record album

Island/Music On Vinyl (Netherlands), 1984. New Copy ... $13.99 18.99
A tough record to peg – but a great one too! Wally Badarou plays a range of spacey keyboards that include synclavier, mini moog, and prophet 5 – all over some beats that are a mix of electro and Carribean rhythms – in a style that's part jazzy, part new agey, and part 80s groove! The record's an unusual one, but it's pretty darn compelling – especially from a vantage point of the many years since it was recorded – because Badarou's clearly years ahead of his time, working here in a style that predates many changes to come in electronic music of the 21st century! Tracks include "Endless Race", "Jungle", "Rain", "Keys", "Mambo", and "Canyons". CD

Island/Big Pink (South Korea), 1971. New Copy Gatefold ... $18.99 22.99
Tremendous Island Records material from Bronco – a set that already has the group changing up their sound from their debut, but still really finding a great lead in the vocals of Jess Roden! Roden's got this well-crafted style that crests and crackles, but without ever sounding forced or calling too much attention to itself – this really special quality that's always had us thinking that Jess is one of the great overlooked singers in 70s rock. Production creates some harmonic moments in his solo leads, and other tracks have some harmony support – which warms up the sound in a nice way amidst the acoustic instrumentation. Titles include "Amber Moon", "Time Slips Away", "Discernible", "Sudden Street", "Joy & Fears", and "Woman". CD

A fantastic album of funky folk, or folky funk – but maybe no surprise, since the great Jess Roden is in the group on vocals! Roden always seems to be attached to music that finds its own sort of groove – and that's definitely the case here, as acoustic instrumentation is used in ways that are nicely spacious and surprisingly soulful – almost like some rural take on the direction that urban mods were hitting in the 60s, and very different than any other sort of country-styled rock of the time! Roden produced, too – and titles include "Bumpers West", "Civil Of You Stranger", "Well Anyhow", "Home", and "Misfit On Your Stair". CD

✨✧ Burning SpearMarcus Garvey/Garvey's Ghost ... CD
Mango/Island (UK), 1975. New Copy ... $9.99
An absolute classic! If you can own only one reggae LP, this one's in the front running – it's as if the words crucial and conscious were created to define the sound Winston Rodney, Burning Spear & the Black Disciples capture on this landmark roots LP. Though this is the Island version which many claim was cleaned up a bit too much to appeal to white audiences (and the same for the dub set, which is included here), but we still think it's pretty powerful. The Black Disciples band, with Horse Wallace, Robbie Shakespeare, Family Man Barrett, Chinna Smith and others, carve out mighty dread rthythms, and producer Jack Ruby keeps the proceedings tight and right, with just the right dub effects laid over top on the dub cuts. Featuring the tracks "Slavery Days", "Marcus Garvey", "The Invasion", "Red, Gold, & Green", "Resting Place", and "Live Good", plus this CD issue adds the dub companion LP, Garvey's Ghost, the dubs "The Ghost", "I & I Survive", "Black Wa-Da-Da", "Brain Food", "Dread River", "Reggaelation" and more, for a total of 20 tracks in all! John CaleHelen Of Troy (LP sleeve edition) ... CD
Island/Culture Factory (France), 1975. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
One of John Cale's greatest moments as a solo artist – a wonderfully dark record that also features lots of great guitar from Chris Spedding, plus electronics from Brian Eno too! There's a stark, flat tone to Cale's lyrics here – a quality that almost echoes some of Eno's albums from around the time, especially the first two – but which takes on some shapes and phrasing that are definitely in the spirit of John's larger body of work too. But man, there's some very spooky bits here – even where you wouldn't expect them – that sense of surprise that Cale could always bring to sweeter moments with the Velvet Underground, re-focused here wonderfully for his own needs. Titles include "Cable Hogue", "Engine", "Save Us", "My Maria", "I Keep A Close Watch", "Helen Of Troy", and "Sudden Death" – plus a cover of Jonathan Richman's "Pablo Picasso". CD

Betty DavisNasty Gal ... LP
Island/Light In The Attic, 1975. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $25.99 28.99
The biggest-label release ever cut by 70s funk legend Betty Davis – but a set that's every bit as hard and heavy as the indie dates that preceded it! Davis is at the top of her form here – bad-stepping amidst the heavy drums and freaked-out guitars that easily made her one of the funkiest folks working in the 70s – an artist who was definitely very much into her own bag, and who's only finally getting her due all these many years later! In a way, the groove is even leaner than before – especially the drums, which are turbocharged with energy, and set a badass vibe for the record throughout – mixing up equal parts of rock, funk, and soul – almost with the genre-busting modes that wouldn't really show up on the New York scene until a number of years later. The whole thing kicks ass – and titles include "Nasty Gal", "Talkin' Trash", "Dedicated To The Press", "FUNK", "Getting Kicked Off Havin Fun", "Shut Off The Light", "This Is It", "The Lone Ranger", and "Feelins". Great limited pressing of the classic – with liner notes, lyrics, and lots of cool photos! LP, Vinyl record album

Will Downing sounds wonderful here on this late 80s set – standing out instantly from most of his contemporaries, with a deep-toned, classic vocal approach that's simply tremendous! Even though some of the backings smack of 80s mainstream production, there's a depth here that goes beyond common commercial soul – a hipper, more mature approach that made Downing one to watch at the time – and a surprising respite from the obvious, even when smooth and mellow. Titles include "Too Soon", "The Love We Share", "Come Together As One", "I'll Wait", "Rules Of Love", "Test Of Time", "Closer To You", and "Sometimes I Cry". CD

Island/Hannibal (UK), 1969. Used ... $6.99
Godlike work from the legendary Nick Drake – and exactly the kind of record that's made him a continuing legend over the years! The style is completely its own – not really folk or rock, but not really jazz either – yet served up with plenty of jazzy phrasing that's helped keep Drake's music fresher than most as the decades move on – and which makes each song here a really rich discovery – even if, like us, you've heard the album hundreds of times in the past! The production is wonderful – with slight underscorings of strings that help unlock dark corners of the songs – and tracks include the classic "River Man" – easily one of Nick's best songs ever – plus "Fruit Tree", "Day Is Done", "Three Hours", "Saturday Sun", and "Time Has Told Me". A record we'd never part with – ever! CD

Frankie Goes To HollywoodWelcome To the Pleasuredome ... CD
ZTT/Island, 1984. Used ... $4.99
Arguably one of the greatest concept albums of the 80s – and the only really strong full length album cut by Frankie Goes To Hollywood! At the time of the set, the group was riding high on the success and controversy of their singles "Relax" and "Two Tribes" – but in the ambitious ZTT mode, sought to expand their sound way past familiar hits, and into a realm of sonic exploration that rivaled that of labelmates Art Of Noise. Don't get us wrong, because the Frankie of this album is still very much in groove-oriented territory – but they also let Horn take over with some more striking tunes that are both longer and shorter than the usual pop track – offsetting the vocal numbers on the record with a rich tapestry of musical backdrops that also more firmly forward the group's social and sexual leanings. The album features surprising covers of "War", "Do You Know The Way To San Jose", and "Born To Run" – plus the hits "Relax" and "Two Tribes", and the original numbers "Welcome To the Pleasure Dome", "Krisco Kisses", "The Ballad Of 32", "Wish The Lads Were Here", "Black Night White Light", "The Only Star In Heaven", "The Power Of Love", and "Bang". Gwen Guthrie's first album for Island Records – a unique little soul set from the early 80s, recorded in Nassau with backing from Sly & Robbie – in a groove that's totally great! The rhythms here are really at the heart of the set – not in a way that eclipses Gwen's vocals, but which does plenty to make the record stand out from the pack at the time – in a groove that's partly clubby, mostly soulful, and which has some key elements from its Nassau connection! Early work from Gwen Guthrie – produced by Sly & Robbie, but with a sweet modern soul sound that's got a lot less of their influence than you'd guess! The sound is much more New York than Jamaica – and that's probably due to some great instrumental backing on keyboards by the likes of Harry Whitaker, Bernie Worrell, and Wally Badarou – all massive talents that bring a nice sweet jazzy sound to the best cuts on the record. There's a definite 80s sing-song groove going on – in that not-yet-top-of-the-charts soul sound that you'd hear on the better small urban stations at the time – moving back and forth nicely, in a strong link between the mainstream and the underground clubs! Tracks include "Hopscotch", "Seventh Heaven", "Oh What A Life", "Younger Than Me", and a nice cover of Sly Stone's "Family Affair". Yet there's also a strong difference here – a to-the-core sound that shows how much PJ Harvey could sometimes hide behind the larger mix of a record, even when she was sounding emotive – as there's a very personal, intimate quality here. Titles include "Angeline", "The Wind", "The Sly Lit Up", "A Perfect Day Elise", "Is This Desire", "The Garden", "No Girl So Sweet", and "My Beautiful Leah". CD

The second PJ Harvey album and the last with a stripped down, raw rock trio sound – and a tense, quiet-loud dynamic that's as thrilling today as the day it came out! Includes the challenging, masterful title track that's taut and chilling from beginning to end, but starts so quiet, you're almost forced to crank the volume only to blow your eardrums when the chorus rages in – for our money it's one greatest songs of the early 90s alt rock boom – and that's just beginning! ✨✧ PJ HarveyStories From The City – Stories From The Sea ... LP
Island, 2000. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99 24.99
PJ Harvey at peak power! This one came at a point in her career when she'd hit such stylistically varied high points earlier on, it's hard to imagine what she could've done to surprise long time fans or impress the critics as much as before – and she hits the mark by diverting expectations all together, with disarmingly great songs and her one of a kind voice. From the relatively spare and intimate songs to the fuzzy guitar stormers, she revisits styles she's done before without repeating herself, it's a next step all around and it hasn't aged a day since it came out. Includes "Big Exit", "Good Fortune", "A Place Called Home", "One Lane", "This Mess We're In", "This Is Love", "Horses In My My Dreams", "We Float", "Beautiful Feeling" and more. Island, 2000. New Copy ... $22.99 24.99
PJ Harvey, as much as any artist who has long-earned living legend status, has the kind of work worth cherishing in stages of development – and you probably don't need us to tell you that the Stories From The City, Stories From The Sea demos are much more than a mere companion piece to the album! While the main album itself isn't what we'd call elaborately produced, it has a big sound even in sparer moments, whereas the demos are a great showcase for her raw strength and huge voice – and the material his a different vibe all around in a lot of ways, making this a strong album of its own – and you get strains of her influences that get smoothed over on the album-proper. Includes "Big Exit", "Good Fortune", "A Place Called Home", "Beautiful Feeling", "The Whores Hustle And The Hustlers Whore", "Kamikaze", "Horses In My Dreams", "We Float". LP, Vinyl record album

Island, 1995. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99 24.99
The one that catapulted PJ Harvey from a critical favorite to something of a popular favorite on both the US and UK – and her most remarkable creative stride to date! At the time, it felt like this was the one where Polly Harvey made a conscious choice to go "big" with sound, working with producer Flood after that famously stripped down Rid Of Me with Steve Albini engineering, but in hindsight it's amazing how the bigger sound, unafraid of electronics and all around grander atmosphere never even comes close to hiding the by turns intimate and mysterious lyricism – and it might be the best showcase for Polly's voice on record – projecting varying, unpredictable mood from track to track. Includes "To Bring You My Love", "Meet Ze Monsta", "Down By The Water", "Send His Love To Me", "The Dancer" and more. LP, Vinyl record album

PJ HarveyUh Huh Her ... LP
Island, 2004. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99 24.99
A little bit leaner, and little bit darker, and a lot more solo of a PJ Harvey album after the comparatively bigger sounding Stories From The City, Stories From The City (itself largely the work of trio, though more deliberately layered and polished) – but true to form, Polly subverts the expectation that she'd strip things raw on a record in which does all but play the drums on – not just on guitars and vocals, bass, piano, accordion, melodica and more on an effort that has a fleshed out band vibe done mostly herself! Rob Ellis handles drums and percussion and titles include "The Life And Death Of Mr. Badmouth", "Shame", "Who The F**k?", "The Pocket Knife", "The Letter", "The Slow Drug", "No Child Of Mine", "The End", "Seagulls" and "The Darker Days Of Me & Him". Island, 2004. New Copy ... $22.99 24.99
The rawer root material of one of PJ Harvey's most singularly realized albums! Even the fully fleshed out Uh Huh Her was a mostly solo-spun effort, with Rob Ellis on drums and percussion and Polly playing most other roles in the writing, recording and performing, up to and including sleeve photography – yet it has a fleshed out band vibe that isn't exactly intimate sounding. With the demos you get that rawer presentation and root feel, and much like other archival recordings in her canon, it's a worthy alternate version rather than fans-only curio. Includes "The Life And Death Of Mr Badmouth", "Shame", "Who The F**k", "The Pocket Knife", "The Letter", "The Slow Drug", "It's You", "The Desperate Kingdom Of Love" and "The Darker Days Of Me & Him". A classic bit of London funky guitar from Ronny Jordan – the heir apparent to Grant Green and Ivan Boogaloo Joe Jones – and one of the best new players of his generation! The set takes the older funky guitar styles of the 60s soul jazz generation, and fuses it with a 90s nujazz approach – to come up with some tight groovers that have a surprisingly classic feel, yet which also sparkle with the fresher sounds of the time – some of the hip rhythms that were bubbling around in London during the Talking Loud and early Acid Jazz years. A great global showcase for the growing power of Bob Marley – an excellent live set recorded in London in 1975, and a date that shows Bob and The Wailers working with the crowd in this really universal spirit! The group's almost got a funkier current here than on some of their studio record – and their sharp edges are warmed up by female backing vocals which seem almost to act as a bridge between Marley's lead, and the very enthusiastic spirit of the crowd! The whole thing's great – and titles include totally burning versions of "Trenchtown Rock", "Burnin & Lootin", "Them Belly Full", "Lively Up Yourself", "No Woman, No Cry", "I Shot The Sheriff", and "Get Up Stand Up". Bunny Livingston lays down some excellent percussion on the set – and rhythm is from the team of Aston and Carlton Barrett on bass and drums. Island (Japan), 1970. New Copy ... $13.99
A fuller effort than the initial outing from John & Beverly Martyn – but a record that has an even more unified spirit, and an approach that takes the acid folk ethos strongly into the 70s! Arrangements are mostly by John and Paul Harris – and feature light piano lines that bring some key jazzy shadings to the tunes – working similar magic in the spacious Joe Boyd production as the use of piano on Nick Drake's classic albums. Beverly and John trade off vocals on the tracks, but there's a really unified feel to the record we love – again, we think, because of the jazzier inflections on the tunes – also helped by some guest sax work from Dudu Pukwana and Ray Warleigh. Titles include "Give Us A Ring", "Parcels", "Primrose Hill", "Auntie Aviator", "New Day", "Sorry To Be So Long", "Let It Happen", and "Road To Ruin". CD features a bonus track! CD

The first album John Martyn cut with wife Beverly – a nicely laidback effort that has the two of them sharing vocal chores, trading off from tune to tune in a really great way! We like John's work so much we're surprised how much we welcome Beverly here – but she really keeps the spirit of the set up well, and offset's John's more traditional folk approach with a slightly raspier, gravelier approach to her lyrics. Instrumentation is relatively light, with spare arrangements from Paul Harris and production from Joe Boyd – and tunes are all originals by the pair, with titles that include "Go Out & Get It", "Sweet Honesty", "Woodstock", "Traffic Light Lady", "The Ocean", "Tomorrow Time", and "Would You Believe Me". An incredible record from reedman Harold McNair – one of the key Jamaican jazz players who hit the London scene in the same post-colonial wave as Joe Harriott and Shake Keane – and maybe our favorite of the bunch! Harold's a hell of a talent on both tenor and flute – and although he might be best known for his background work on late 60s Donovan albums, he really soars here as a soloist – working with Ornette Coleman group members David Izenzon on bass and Charles Moffett on drums – both of whom swing wonderfully in McNair's company! The album bills Izenzon and Moffett strongly on the cover – as if they're one of the main attractions – but what's most compelling is the way that McNair and pianist Alan Branscombe bring the American musicians into their own sort of groove – a modal, soulful style that's completely sublime – and which makes the album a killer all the way through. Titles include the original "Affectionate Fink" – plus great takes on "I Love You", "O Barquinho", "You Stepped Out Of A Dream", and "Here's That Rainy Day" – all soulful swingers. CD

The trio really finds this amazing way forward, almost with some echoes of the hipper side of the Island Records underground – with Steve Winwood on vocals throughout, and on some mighty nice organ and piano – and Jim Capaldi on drums and percussion, and Chris Wood on a variety of saxes, flute, and percussion. Titles include "Glad", "Freedom Rider", "Empty Pages", "Stranger To Himself", and "Every Mother's Son". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ TrafficLow Spark Of High Heeled Boys ... CD
Island, 1971. Used ... $3.99
A huge album from Traffic – a set that was first given to the world in a strange-shaped cover – which seemed to grace countless record collections back in the 70s! The group is expanded to a sextet here – with bass from Rick Grech and percussion from Rebop Kwaku Baah – both of whom really flesh out the sound in wonderful ways – adding more bottom and heft to the musical ideas here from Steve Winwood and Jim Capaldi, the latter of whom gets to shine on vocals on two tracks too! As usual, the reeds from Chris Wood really send the whole thing home – and titles include "Rock & Roll Stew", "Rainmaker", "Many A Mile To Freedom", "Hidden Treasure", and "Light Up Or Leave Me Alone". TrafficMr Fantasy (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Island, 1967. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99 24.99
The incredible first album from Traffic – a record that was already way ahead of the pack, and would set the tone for so many other sounds and modes from others in years to come! At some level, the group were just coming off the big beat group years in the UK – that time of strong inspiration from American soul, jazz, and R&B – but they're already pushing all these elements in very different ways – certainly psychedelic, as you'd guess from the image on the cover – but also still holding onto a lot of the soul and jazz that first inspired them! To our ears, the reed work of Chris Woods is as important to the record as the Hammond from Steve Winwood, guitar from Dave Mason, and drums from Jim Capaldi – plus the vocals from all three – and in addition to the classic title cut "Mr Fantasy", other tunes include "Dealer", "House For Everyone", "Berkshire Poppies", "No Face No Name No Number", and "Coloured Rain". TrafficShoot Out At The Fantasy Factory (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Island, 1973. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99 24.99
Traffic get some help here from Muscle Shoals heavyweights Barry Beckett, Roger Hawkins, and Jimmy Johnson – a trio who help the group continue that richer, more expanded sound that was first unfurled on the group's Low Spark album! The sound is maybe a more focused attempt at territory from that record, but one that also really stretches things out too – long tracks that have just the right balance, and which never make the extra long space of the tunes feel like their wasted at all – just perfect settings for the energy of the tunes composed by Steve Winwood and Jim Capaldi. Titles include "Roll Right Stones", "Tragic Magic", "Evening Blue", and "Shoot Out At The Fantasy Factory". LP, Vinyl record album

Island, 1968. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99 24.99
The second album from Traffic, and a set that forever cemented their legacy in the annals of modern music – a set that has Dave Mason returning to the group after a brief hiatus, and maybe helping the quartet find a tighter, rootsier sound overall! The approach here is nicely mixed – almost half Dave Mason moments, and half from the energy of Jim Capaldi and Steve Winwood – held together wonderfully by the reed work of Chris Wood! There's a few key classics here, and lots more overlooked gems – and titles include "You Can All Join In", "Forty Thousand Headmen", "Pearly Queen", "Who Know What Tomorrow May Bring", and "Feelin' Alright". TrafficWhen The Eagle Flies (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Island, 1974. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99 24.99
The last album in a legendary run from Traffic – a set that has the team of Steve Winwood and Jim Capaldi working with a really strong sense of focus – maybe in part because the group's winnowed down to a quartet, which leaves their contributions even more strongly in the lead! The great Chris Wood still brings in some nice sax and flute touches – but Steve's also really letting loose on keyboards, and not just organ and piano – taking the longer space of some tracks to bring in some mighty nice solo moments! Titles include the classic title cut "When The Eagle Flies" – plus "Dream Gerrard", "Graveyard People", "Love", "Walking In The Wind", and "Something New". LP, Vinyl record album

Vinegar JoeVinegar Joe (with bonus track) ... CD
Island/Universal (Japan), 1971. New Copy ... $13.99
The cover's a bit cartoony, but the group's got a nicely down to earth sound – a UK blend of roots rock and deeper blues currents – but served up in that 70s style that takes all the best elements way past their familiar incarnations! The group sports two singers – a young Robert Palmer and female vocalist Elkie Brooks – and although Palmer would soon emerge as a more pop-oriented artist, he's got plenty of soulful chops here – but maybe still only second to Elkie, who soars out with the sort of inspiration that must have touched Janis Joplin as well. Titles include "Circles", "Leg Up", "See The World", "Never Met A Dog", "Live A Little Get Somewhere", and "Avinu Malkenu". CD
