Grace JonesIsland Life ... CD
Island, Late 70s. Used ... $3.99
Nicely selected collection of tracks from Grace Jones' years at Island Records – when she was a genre-bending club queen who turned out some pretty fantastic cuts. A few numbers on here don't hold up that well these days, but we're surprised at how fresh some of this material sounds – especially with the rediscovery of the post-punk Danceteria sort of scene. Titles include "Pull Up To The Bumper", "Love Is The Drug", "Slave To The Rhythm", "My Jamaican Guy", "I Need A Man", "Walking In The Rain", and "Private Life". CD

Larry NozeroIsland Fever ... LP
MSI, 1981. Very Good ... $9.99
A really great set as a leader from reedman Larry Nozero – a player who's probably best known for his 70s work with Eddie Russ, but who sounds totally great here on his own – with the same flowing grace and sense of soul he brought to his other work! The album's an acoustic one – with John Katalenic on piano, driving the group with some long-soaring lines that provide plenty of dynamic energy for Nozero's solos, especially on sax. Titles are all originals too – and include "Bonnie Ann", "Seven Eleven", "Song For My Mother", "Pranzalito", and "Island Fever". LP, Vinyl record album

VariousAlefa Madagascar – Salegy, Soukous, & Soul From The Red Island 1974 to 1984 ... CD
Strut (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
A really riveting collection of music from a scene that we've hardly heard much from before – upbeat grooves from the island nation of Madagascar, all recorded at the end of the 70s and start of the 80s – but with a vibe that sounds much older overall! The one thing that really stands out in a number of these tracks is the strong use of organ and keyboards – often in this full, swirling sort of style – infusing the grooves next to the more familiar percussion and guitar lines you might hear in other African music from the generation – although even those elements are used in ways that are pretty darn unique! The tracks often have this raw intensity that comes from both the instrumentation and the way things are put together – and the whole package is a really refreshing change from other oft-tread musical territory on the continent. Titles include "Mama" by Roger Georges, "Andosy Mora" by Jean Kelly Et Bastn, "Ngoma Hoe" by Papa James, "Izahay Mpamita" by Mahaleo, "Faraina" by Feon'Ala, "Soaliza" by Terak Anosy Group, "Oa Niny E" by Nino Rafah, "Razana Tsy Ho Meloko" by Michael, "Jazz Sega" by Jeannot Rabeson Et Son Orchestre, "Tokatoka" by Kaiamba Orchestra, "Zaka Tiako Mamolaka Keriko" by Atrefy Andriana, and "Andeha Hanarato" by Los Matadores. ✨✧ Keith JarrettTreasure Island ... CD
Impulse/MCA, 1974. Used ... Out Of Stock
Ultra-hip work from pianist Keith Jarrett – a session that's filled with joy and life, and which has a lot more energy than some of his albums for ECM! The work here is kind of a refinement of the freer styles that Jarrett had laid down on previous albums – performed with a strongly rhythmic undercurrent, but one that also opens up to some strong top-end melodies as well – played not only by Jarrett on piano, but also by Dewey Redman on tenor, in a group with Sam Brown on guitar, Paul Motian on drums, and Guilherme Franco and Danny Johnson on percussion. Titles include "The Rich & The Poor", "Blue Streak", "Le Mistral", "Angles Without Edges", "Treasure Island", and "Sister Fortune". CD

✨✧ Herbie MannHerbie Mann & Fire Island ... LP
Atlantic, 1977. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
A sweet little disco set from Herbie Mann – recorded in collaboration with the Fire Island soul vocal trio! The group's got a sound that's kind of compelling – not as sweet or smooth as some of the other disco trios of the time, and with an approach that almost has the voices moving in contrast to one another, playing off harmonies in a mode that's similar to that used on some of the Roy Ayers club tracks of the late 70s. The groove's surprisingly nice on the best numbers – more funky jazz than throwaway disco – with plenty of room for Herbie to solo, and some nice use of electric piano as well. Includes the great "Summer Strut", plus the tracks "Rhythmatism", "Flute Love", "You Are The Song", and "Welcome Sunrise". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Elmo Hope EnsembleHope From Rikers Island (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Chiaroscuro, 1963/1978. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
An amazing album – and a really unique slice of the underground of jazz in the 60s! The session was put together in 1963 by Walt Dickerson, and was conceived as an attempt to draw attention to the incredible amount of great jazz players who were then currently serving time in prison for trumped-up drug charges. The players were culled from New York's Riker's Island, and the mix is a strange and wonderfully surprising blend of musicians that includes Hope, John Gilmore, Ronnie Boykins, Philly Joe Jones, and Earl Coleman. The quality of the work and writing is superb, and not only is the record a high point in Hope's all-too-short career, but it also features some excellent non-Sun Ra work by Gilmore! Titles include "One For Joe", "Three Silver Quarters", "Kevin", "Trippin", and "It Shouldn't Happen To A Dream". LP, Vinyl record album

Wally BadarouEchoes (original pressing) ... CD
Island, 1984. Used ... $28.99
A tough record to peg – but a great one too! Wally Badarou plays a range of spacey keyboards that include synclavier, mini moog, and prophet 5 – all over some beats that are a mix of electro and Carribean rhythms – in a style that's part jazzy, part new agey, and part 80s groove! The record's an unusual one, but it's pretty darn compelling – especially from a vantage point of the many years since it was recorded – because Badarou's clearly years ahead of his time, working here in a style that predates many changes to come in electronic music of the 21st century! Tracks include "Endless Race", "Jungle", "Rain", "Keys", "Mambo", and "Canyons". CD

Island (UK), 1980. Very Good+ ... $19.99
UK West Indian ex-pats in vaguely sci-fi looking outfits team up with Martin Hannett for a blistering set of post punk guitar slashing that sadly seems to have become mostly a side bar in the history of the 80s UK scene – although sometime singer Don Letts did start Big Audio Dynamite later. None of the dubby effects of their singles and little of the reggae influence are at work here, but it's still worthy of more than a passing listen! 9 tracks in all, including "Riot", "No Ball Games", "Hard Work", "Immigration", "Last White Christmas", "Heavy Traffic", "Union Games", "Too Soon" and "Omega Man". ✨✧ John CaleSlow Dazzle ... LP
Island, 1975. Very Good ... $19.99
Dazzling work from John Cale – exactly the kind of record that shows why his solo years were so great! The record's got this unusual vibe – on one hand, it's put together like a more conventional rock set of the time – but on the other, it's got strange dark currents that run through the whole thing in very weird ways – a bit like some of the Roxy Music edges from the early years. No surprise, both Brian Eno and Phil Manzanera contribute strongly to the set – but the energy of the record definitely comes from Cale's great songwriting and offbeat vocals – and his great ear for a weird-sounding tune. Titles include "Mr Wilson", "Rollaroll", "Ski Patrol", "Guts", "The Jeweller", and Cale's famous version of "Heartbreak Hotel". LP, Vinyl record album

Jimmy Cliff & OthersHarder They Come ... LP
Island, 1972. Very Good+ Gatefold ... $24.99
A record that's not only a landmark in Jamaican music – but also a set that was to reggae what Curtis Mayfield's Superfly was to 70s soul! In other words, the set not only raised the bar for all the competition, it also ended up in a lot more record collections than most of them too – maybe in part because it was a soundtrack, as was Superfly – but also because it has this global power that makes it a defining album of the genre! Jimmy Cliff is obviously the mainman here, but there's help from other key players in the growing reggae scene – and titles include Jimmy's classic "You Can Get It If You Really Want", in two versions – plus two takes on "The Harder They Come", "Many Rivers To Cross", and "Sitting In Limbo" – plus "Sweet & Dandy" and "Pressure Drop" by The Maytals, "007" by Desmond Dekker, "Johnny Too Bad" by The Slicers, "Draw Your Brakes" by Scotty, and "Rivers Of Babylon" by The Melodians. Will DowningCome Together As One ... CD
Island, 1989. Used ... $7.99
Will Downing sounds wonderful here on this late 80s set – standing out instantly from most of his contemporaries, with a deep-toned, classic vocal approach that's simply tremendous! Even though some of the backings smack of 80s mainstream production, there's a depth here that goes beyond common commercial soul – a hipper, more mature approach that made Downing one to watch at the time – and a surprising respite from the obvious, even when smooth and mellow. Titles include "Too Soon", "The Love We Share", "Come Together As One", "I'll Wait", "Rules Of Love", "Test Of Time", "Closer To You", and "Sometimes I Cry". CD

Will DowningDream Fulfilled ... CD
Island, 1991. Used ... $2.99
One of the best ever albums from maestro Will Downing – a smooth rolling, impeccably arranged gem of an album from the early 90s – with a timeless sound that's as fresh and breezy as ever! The production is immaculate, without losing any of the warmth and emotion – a clean approach that's really close to perfect when done by artists as capable as Downing. Will's vocal arrangements are front and center, with gorgeous female backing singers, keys, piano and synth, crisply popping bass, and horn accompaniment. Very nice stuff from an overlooked early 90s contemporary soul cat. Titles include "I'll Wait", "She", "Giving My All To You", "I Try", "For All We Know", "Something's Going On", "Don't Make Me Wait", "I Go Crazy", No Love Intended" and unique take on War's "The World Is A Ghetto". Nick DrakeFive Leaves Left (deluxe box set – with poster, download, and more) ... LP
Island, 1969. New Copy (reissue)... $53.99 59.98
Godlike work from the legendary Nick Drake – and exactly the kind of record that's made him a continuing legend over the years! The style is completely its own – not really folk or rock, but not really jazz either – yet served up with plenty of jazzy phrasing that's helped keep Drake's music fresher than most as the decades move on – and which makes each song here a really rich discovery – even if, like us, you've heard the album hundreds of times in the past! The production is wonderful – with slight underscorings of strings that help unlock dark corners of the songs – and tracks include the classic "River Man" – easily one of Nick's best songs ever – plus "Fruit Tree", "Day Is Done", "Three Hours", "Saturday Sun", and "Time Has Told Me". A record we'd never part with – ever! Incredible box set – limited edition – with an authentic reproduction of the original 1969 pressing of the record on audiophile vinyl, plus Nick's handwritten lyrics to two songs, a replica shop poster, and bonus voucher for downloads in different formats! Island, 1975. Near Mint- ... $44.99
Brian Eno at the crux of his career – hanging perfectly between the guitar-heavy glam of earlier years, and the spacey electronics of later material – both of which he presents wonderfully on the record! The album is one of his last to feature real rock songs, with the kind of vocals you'd know from Eno's first two albums – and it mixes straighter styles with more complex electronic soundscapes, resulting in some wonderfully cold and abstract material that prefaces musical territory that many other artists wouldn't hit until the following decade! Fairport ConventionFull House (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Island (UK), 1970. New Copy ... $8.99 11.98
A full house, and a strong change for Fairport Convention – working here without founder Ashley Hutchings or vocalist Sandy Denny – but finding their way forward through the new strengths of Richard Thompson! Thompson contributed more songs to this album than before, and also joins the lineup for a new vocal sound – one that, without any female singer in the mix, really gives the group a different feel than before – almost a fresh take on some of the territory they'd been moving through on previous records. The vocals are often understated, but in a way that gives the guitars, mandolin, and fiddle even more power – but in a way that's more rocky than folksy, and we mean that in the best way possible. Titles include "Poor Will & The Jolly Hangman", "Walk Awhile", "Doctor Of Physick", "Dirty Linen", "Sloth", and "Sir Patrick Spens". CD features bonus tracks – including "Now Be Thankful", "Bonny Bunch Of Roses", and "Sir B McKenzie's Daughter's Lament". CD

Fairport ConventionLiege & Lief (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Island (UK), 1970. Used ... $6.99
A record that really has Fairport Convention knocking it out of the park – making a bold turn towards British traditional music, but in a way that imbues these relics with a whole new life of their own! The album came at a key turning point – after an accident that took one of their members, and which almost saw the group disband – but instead turn towards the past for even deeper inspiration than some of their contemporaries, whom they'd covered on other records – at a level that seems to set Sandy Denny free into this sublime territory of her own! Denny's vocals are incredible – like a thing unlocked from some ancient vault – and they're given this wonderful focus through the growing complexity of Richard Thompson's guitar work, and the understated brilliance of Ashley Hutchings' bass – both of which bring in these modal inflections that are very 60s, and hardly conceived of as accompaniment with the original tunes. The result is tremendous – tunes that are completely transformed, as a touchstone for generations. Titles include "Matty Groves", "Reynardine", "Come All Ye", "The Deserter", "Tam Lin", and "Crazy Man Michael". The record where it all really came together for Fairport Convention – the point at which the already-great group really stepped forward to become something totally unique! By this point all the key elements are firmly in place – sublime vocals from the great Sandy Denny, amazing guitar and songwriting from the young Richard Thompson, and an overall approach to the music that was way more than folk – in the way the elements are layered together carefully, and build in these hypnotic lines that are completely amazing – almost modal in conception, but much more subtle – and the quality that really makes their work so unique. Fairport ConventionWhat We Did On Our Holidays (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Island (UK), 1969. New Copy ... $8.99 11.98
A pivotal album from Fairport Convention – hardly the "holiday" you might expect from the title, and instead a set that has the group really reaching out for some new ideas and styles in their music! Sandy Denny is firmly in place here – taking the lead on most numbers – but Ian Matthews is also still in the group, bringing in that bit of west coast style that we loved from the first record – and which keeps the overall feel here more 60s than ancient, especially given the upped electrics on a few numbers. Ashley Hutchings' bass is brilliant – almost more this subtle, sonic force at the bottom than an instrument on its own – yet also still away from the more modal elements to come on the next few records. And although there's less traditional tunes on here than later, the group themselves are already becoming timeless – and unlike anything that had ever come before. Titles include "Fotheringay", "Mr Lacey", "Book Song", "I'll Keep It With Mine", "End Of A Holiday", "She Moves Through The Fair", and "Eastern Rain". CD features great bonus tracks – "Throwaway Street Puzzle", "You're Gonna Need My Help", and "Some Sweet Day". CD

A great 70s set from Paul Horn – played in a style that's a lot straighter than most of his work from the decade! The style here almost recalls the Paul Horn of earlier jazz years – mellow and laidback, with a real sense of space and sound that's influenced clearly by bossa nova and modal jazz of the 60s, but which also tends to have a freer-thinking 70s sound on the more expansive solos. Horn plays a variety of flutes, plus alto sax and clarinet – and he's joined by Lynn Blessing on vibes, Art Johnson on electric guitar, and Bart Hall on drums and percussion. The core of the set is in a jazz-based mode – and features renditions of tracks that include "Freedom Jazz Dance", "Tribute To Jobim", "Just Because We're Kids", "Willow Weep For Me", and "Summertime" – and the last part of the performance features sparer, spacier numbers that include Horn originals "Dusk", "Forms", and "Dawn". Inner CircleEverything Is Great ... LP
Island, 1979. Sealed ... $5.99
Smooth soulful reggae, from one of the few groups to successfully span both the commercial and hardcore roots worlds. The last set cut before Jacob Miller's untimely death and his final proper recording with the band, this album works the crisp and clean approach that a great deal of the reggae issued under Chris Blackwell carried, and pulls it off well. The disco and soul influences never sound forced, and the groups tight sense of dynamics holds up better than some of the more raw reggae acts under the shiny, polished production. 8 numbers in all, including the cuts "Music Machine", "Mary Mary", "Roots Rock Symphony", "Everything Is Great", "Playing It", "We A Rockers", "I've Learned My Lesson", and "Stop Breaking My Heart". One of our favorite albums ever from Grace Jones – a record that has her shedding some of the disco excesses of earlier years, and moving into a great blend of sounds that really showcases the energy of the New York scene from which she sprang! The album was recorded in Nassau, with help from Sly Dunbar on drums, Robbie Shakespeare on bass, and Wally Badarou on keyboards – and most tunes have an edgier feel that makes Jones sound even darker than before. There's loads of great disco-not-disco moments – from the straight funk of "Pull Up To The Bumper" to the insane post-punk grooving of "Demolition Man" – to other tracks that include "I've Seen That Face Before (Libertango)", "Art Groupie", "Walking In The Rain", "Nightclubbing", and "Use Me". Most of the tunes are older ones, but they're remade with a soaring Sigma Sound groove by the best in Philly – taking sometimes-cloying lyrics and pushing them into hipper disco territory for the 70s – all with that odd wink and subtle sense of irony that would emerge more clearly in Jones' later records. Tom Moulton produced and mixed, and titles include "I Need A Man", "La Vie En Rose", "Sorry", "Tomorrow", "What I Did For Love", and "Send In The Clowns". CD

Maybe the best place to start if you're looking to dive into the short but incredible legacy of music left behind by Bob Marley – as the album marked a real global turning point for the singer, and includes a number of tracks that are still his standout classics after all these years! The set was recorded in London, but with a nicely understated sound – just the right focus on all the best elements of the Wailers sound – in a way that creates a magical flow throughout. And sure, some of the cuts here are some of Bob's biggest hits ever – but heard in the context of the core album, they've got a lot more righteous power than when they're cribbed for a commercial or a TV soundtrack. Titles include "Natural Mystic", "Three Little Birds", "One Love/People Get Ready", "Exodus", "So Much Things To Say", "Guiltiness", "The Heathen", "Jamming", "Waiting In Vain", and "Turn Your Lights Down Low". John MartynLondon Conversation (plus bonus track) ... CD
Island/Universal (UK), 1967. New Copy ... $6.99
The incredible debut of John Martyn – a set that's surprisingly spare and stripped-down compared to later work, but which already shows that genius that set Martyn apart from most of his contemporaries! The approach is similar to the style used with contemporaries Bert Jansch and John Renbourn on some of their mid 60s albums – but Martyn's already got this jazzy sensibility in the way he puts the tunes together, which inflects his folksy expressions in ways that are more like Nick Drake – although with a very different song structure and lyrical sensibility. John's maybe a bit more confident in his approach, although no less revolutionary – and at a time when more subtle sounds like this would have been lost in the US scene, London Conversation went on to create quite a longstanding ripple on its home turf. Titles include "Who's Grown Up Now", "Fairy Tale Lullaby", "London Conversation", "Sandy Grey", "Ballad Of An Elder Woman", "Cocain", "Back To Stay", and "This Time". A really beautiful little record from John Martyn – a set in which he's really perfected his talents, and found a way to stand out from just about anyone else in the pack – including the best of his British folk rock contemporaries! Martyn plays acoustic guitar, but the record's hardly folk at this point – because his vocals have all these jazzy changes, maybe a bit like Joni Mitchell was hitting at the same point in her career – more sophisticated, but very organic and never forced – with this quality that makes just about every word that comes from Martyn's voice resonate with a really fantastic quality. His guitar playing is as wonderful as ever – and again, filled with jazzy phrasing without ever being jazz at all – and the whole thing is maybe a record to proudly put Martyn in the company of Nick Drake on his few classics for Island. One of Nico's darkest albums – and the kind of record we always suggest to those who doubt her genius! The incredibly spare set has Nico playing harmonium, which makes for a spooky off-kilter sound that really gives the record a somber approach – especially as the instrument sounds a heck of a lot like her voice – very dark and moody, with lots of offbeat tones! Nico also gets some hip help, too – as the set features Brian Eno on keyboards, and production by John Cale – who also plays a huge variety of odd instruments too. One of the great lost moments in the career of Trevor Horn – and the only real full album from Propaganda! The group have an approach that has bits of the Art of Noise love of sound texture, and which also seems to borrow a bit from the German electronics of the early 80s – but fuses the groove into a more straightforward Factory Records-ish sort of sound. One of the greatest moments ever from the mighty John Lydon – a record that maybe blows away all other albums by Public Image – and which also stands strongly next to the work of the Sex Pistols, but in a very different way! Lydon is quite far from punk rock roots here – and instead works in this bassy, dubby, trippy blend that's served up strongly by the bass work of Jah Wobble – very influenced by Jamaican music, but playing in a style that's got a very different vibe – and quite different from more familiar late 70s attempts to mix punk and reggae. Instead, Wobble and Lydon use the mode as this dark wash of sound – sparkling with weird guitar sounds from Keith Levine, and layered with these haunting lyrics on madness and paranoia – much more dark poetry than anything Lydon ever gave us. The track "Poptones" is worth the price of the record alone – and other tiles include "Swan Lake", "No Birds", "Chant", "No Radio", "Albatross", "Careering", and "Memories". LP, Vinyl record album

A record that's not only a landmark in Jamaican music – but also a set that was to reggae what Curtis Mayfield's Superfly was to 70s soul! ZTT/Island, 1984. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Arguably one of the greatest concept albums of the 80s – and the only really strong full length album cut by Frankie Goes To Hollywood! At the time of the set, the group was riding high on the success and controversy of their singles "Relax" and "Two Tribes" – but in the ambitious ZTT mode, sought to expand their sound way past familiar hits, and into a realm of sonic exploration that rivaled that of labelmates Art Of Noise. Don't get us wrong, because the Frankie of this album is still very much in groove-oriented territory – but they also let Horn take over with some more striking tunes that are both longer and shorter than the usual pop track – offsetting the vocal numbers on the record with a rich tapestry of musical backdrops that also more firmly forward the group's social and sexual leanings. The album features surprising covers of "War", "Do You Know The Way To San Jose", and "Born To Run" – plus the hits "Relax" and "Two Tribes", and the original numbers "Welcome To the Pleasure Dome", "Krisco Kisses", "The Ballad Of 32", "Wish The Lads Were Here", "Black Night White Light", "The Only Star In Heaven", "The Power Of Love", and "Bang". ✨✧ Bob Marley & The WailersNatty Dread ... LP
Island, 1974. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A breakthrough album from Bob Marley – a set that was recorded equally in Kingston and London, and which has a globe-spanning vibe to match! Marley's star had already been rising by the time of this set – but this album helped cement both his lasting power, and the worldwide influence of the music that Jamaica was bringing forth – served up by a sharp lineup that includes Aston "Family Man" Barrett on bass, Carlton Barrett on drums and percussion, Touter on piano and organ, and Al Anderson on lead guitar – as well as soulful backing from the I-Threes. A good chunk of the record was recorded at Harry J's – not as tightly as some of the later Island Records material – and titles include the classics "Lively Up Yourself", "No Woman No Cry", "Rebel Music", "Natty Dread" and "Talkin' Blues". ✨✧ John MartynBless The Weather (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Island/Universal (UK), 1971. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An album that may well be John Martyn's crowning moment of genius – a time when he soared forward from his spare sound of a few short years ago – and found a way to bring in all these jazzy currents to his music, but all without ever going for a style that was ever over-arranged or commercially produced! Martyn's voice is amazing – completely captivating, and full of all these wonderful twists and turns – as are his guitar lines too – never in any sort of overdone way, but with a subtle power that really gives the album the sort of glow that's evoked by the cover image. The set features guest work from Richard Thomposon, Roger Powell, and Beverley Martyn – and titles include "Go Easy", "Bless The Weather", "Sugar Lump", "Walk To The Water", "Just Now", "Head & Heart", "Let The Good Things Come", "Back Down The River", and "Singin In The Rain" – with a good amount of bonus tracks including alternate takes of "Go Easy", "Walk On Water", "Back Down The River", and a single version of "May You Never". ✨✧ Roxy MusicFor Your Pleasure ... LP
Island (UK), 1973. Near Mint- Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The incredible second album from Roxy Music – picking up right where the self titled album left off – ratcheting up the excitement even more thanks to Ferry's extra dramatic songs, Eno's unpredictable synthesizer and tape manipulations, and a driving approach to the performances by the rest of the group! The songs range from fairly straight forward fiery glam rock, to more complicated, evolving structural tension. We hear strains of this record in so many great rock albums that followed, from the punk era all the way up to post millenium indie rock – but as influential as it is, it's an amazing experience all its own! Titles include "Do The Strand", "Beauty Queen", 'Strictly Confidential", "Editions Of You", "In Every Dream Home A Heartache", "The Bogus Man", "Grey Lagoons" and "For Your Pleasure". LP, Vinyl record album
(180 gram Capitol Vaults pressing.)
