Eden AhbezEden's Island (2CD edition – with bonus tracks) ... CD
Del-Fi/Everland (Austria), Early 60s. New Copy 2CD ... $22.99 25.99
An incredibly evocative record – one of the strangest of its kind, and an audio treasure that we've loved for years! Eden Ahbez first came into public prominence as the man who wrote "Nature Boy" for Nat King Cole – a dark, moody tune that was as mysterious and earthy as the man who wrote it! This album was recorded nearly a decade after Cole's original hit, and features Ahbez almost in Moondog-like territory – working in an amazing setting of odd instruments and exotic percussion – but also singing in this almost spiritualist kind of way! The record's got plenty of ties to the exotica scene of the late 50s – but also stand out from the pack with a mad vision that's all its own – a strange intersection of lines that one might draw between Moondog, Martin Denny, and Anton La Vey! Tracks include "The Wanderer", "Eden's Island", "Tradewind", "Full Moon", "Mongoose", "Market Place", "The Old Boat", "Island Girl" and "La Mar". Great expanded package – with bonus tracks that include the unreleased "Surf Rider", plus "The Wanderer (alt)", "Tobago (45 rpm mix)", "Jam Session 78", "India (demo)", "Big Square From Nowhere", and "The Planet Song". Also includes related tracks "Sahara" by Bob Romeo, "Song Of The Fool" by The Crew Cuts, "End Of Desire" by Jack Powers, "The Shepherd" by Herb Jeffries, "Hey Jacque" by The Mt Holyoke V8s, "Monterey (alt version)" by John Harris, "Big Rock Steam Roller" by Biggie McFadden, "Green Flamingo" by Robbie Lester, and "Lonely Island" by Gene Chandler. Tony Aless with Seldon PowellTony Aless & His Long Island Suite ... LP
Roost, 1955. Very Good+ ... $24.99
One of the few albums ever cut as a leader by pianist Tony Aless – an unsung hero of the big band years, especially in the Woody Herman group – and a great arranger too! This set's an all-original outing – a suite of tracks dedicated to Long Island, and played by a very hip group that has tenorist Seldon Powell in the lead – serving up work that's every bit as great here as on his own albums for Roost from the time! The record's got a slightly largish group – a tentet that's stuffed with great players – including Billy Bauer on guitar, JJ Johnson and Kai Winding on trombones, and Nick Travis on trumpet – all modernists who really bring in the sound you'd expect. Titles include "Fire Island", "Valley Stream", "Levittown", and "Massapequa". LP, Vinyl record album
(Blue label Royal Roost pressing with deep groove! Vinyl has a short click on the first track, but the rest is great. Cover is nice.)

✨✧ Gene Barge, David Matthews, & Andre DavisStony Island – Original Soundtrack ... CD
TK/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1978. New Copy ... $12.99 15.99 About May 17, 2023
A sweet set of soundtrack funk – from a film named after one of our favorite streets in Chicago! Although the record's got an approach that's perhaps a bit tighter and smoother than anything going down on Stony in the late 70s, it does manage to share a good deal of styles with the Chi-soul scene of the time – thanks to work on the record from Chicagoans Gene Barge, Sonny Seals, and Tennyson Stephens! Many of the tracks on the set have a bad-walking soul approach – one that's kind of a mixture of funky and bluesy – and these are laid out next to some jazzier instrumentals that we like most of all – tunes that have a great funky soundtrack feel, but with a bit more fusion touches than usual, probably because of the work of David Matthews. Titles include "Percy Fired", "Party Lights", "High Speed Posters", "Back To Business", "Chase The Train", "Gangster City", "Dream Ride", and "Peace Of Mind". CD

Kola BeldyWhite Island ... LP
Everland (Austria), 1989. New Copy ... $24.99 29.99
A wonderfully weird little record – one that has Kola Beldy bringing back ancient chants from the Mongolian plains – then setting them to instrumentation that's a bit contemporary, but usually in some very offbeat ways! The record sounds nothing like what you'd guess from the date of 1989 – as there's plenty of sounds here that are almost-ancient, with lots of deep percussion – mixed with others that use a bit more keyboards and other contemporary elements – but often sparingly, so that the weird, very moody vocals of Kola are often right out front! The whole thing is impossible to describe in words, but has a really riveting sound – on titles that translate as "By Dog Sledge", "My Darling", "To The Ocean", "Fisher Woman", "White Island", and "Master Of Forest". Mahakala, 2022. New Copy ... $11.99 15.99
The second meeting of this great combo in the studio – an open, thoughtful performance from a group that features Warren Smith on vibes, Joe McPhee on tenor, Jay Rosen on drums, and Michael Marcus on a variety of reeds! The set often seems perfectly balanced between the personalities of the members of the quartet – but somehow, Smith's vibes really seem to have this sense of place and importance on the record – tonally subtle when things are quiet, and surprisingly powerful when the reeds take off! Titles include "Buttercup", "This Here Ain't Nothin But The Blues", "Wis Vibrations", "Ella's Island", "Never Ending Worlds", "Mindfields In Opulence", and "Ethereal Spirits Divine". CD

Island/Universal (Italy), 1970s. New Copy 6 x 7 Inch ... $13.99 36.99
A very cool set of work – a box set that brings together six different pic sleeve singles from Roxy Music legend Bryan Ferry – most of which were not issued in the US! The images alone are great – shots of Ferry in his youth, including a few images with a surprisingly slick moustache – and most of the work here dovetails nicely with the classic Roxy Music material, with some of the same musicians on hand, but given a slightly different spin in Ferry's company. Titles include the original tracks "Sea Breezes", "Remake/Remodel", "2HB", "Another Time Another Place", and "Chance Meeting" – plus versions of "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes", "Hard Rain's Gonna Fall", "You Go To My Head", "The In Crowd", and "Let's Stick Together". Also features the very cool Extended Play EP – with versions of "It's Only Love", "Heart On My Sleeve", "Shame Shame Shame", and "The Price Of Love". 7-inch, Vinyl record

✨✧ Jade WarriorWind Borne – The Island Albums 1974 to 1978 (Floating World/Kites/Waves/Way Of The Sun) (4CD set) ... CD
Island/Esoteric (UK), Mid 70s. New Copy 4CD ... $34.99 44.99
Four important albums from Jade Warrior – all brought together here in a single set! Floating World is the first album in Jade Warrior's mid-70s run for Island Records – and a set that marks a key shift for the group – a moment when they leaned even more heavily into their interest in global sounds, dropped most of their vocals, and used their impeccable instrumentation to take off in really amazing ways! The core duo of Tony Duhig's guitar and Jon Field's flute serve up most of the instrumentation here – and both players handle plenty of percussion too – yet there's a richness to the record that's undeniable too, which is a great testament to the way the pair make really special music together! Martha Mdenge serves up some guest vocals on the final track "Quba", the group take on the legendary "Monkey Chant" of Balinese music, and other titles include "Red Lotus", "Clouds", "Mountain Of Fruit & Flowers", "Waterfall", and "Easty". Kites is one of the most ambitious records ever from Jade Warrior – a set that expands their core sound in a wonderful way, with all sorts of great guests who really add a lot to the music! As before, the duo of Tony Duhig and Jon Field are at the core – guitar, flute, and plenty of percussion – but augmented here with all sorts of cool contributions by guests who include Fred Frith on violin, Gowan Turnball on saxes, and Jeff Westley on electric piano – plus Clodagh Simonds on a bit of vocals – all really bringing a new sort of majesty to the sort of music that the group delivered on their previous record – but without losing the sense of intimacy either. Titles include "Towards The Mountains", "Wind Song", "The Emperor", "Songs Of The Forest", "Quietly By The River Bank", and "The Last Question". Waves is a key moment in the continuing evolution of Jade Warrior – and a set that nicely moves the group from the prog styles of their roots, into leaner territory that's almost jazz-based at times! Some of the group's contemporaries were making such shifts, but usually in a way that was more heavy handed – where the lightness that Jade Warrior had on previous records really guides the music here – as they work with their core combination of keyboards, flute, guitar, and plenty of percussion – with additional work from Dave Duhig on lead guitar, Maggie Thomas on alto recorder, and Steve Winwood on moog, piano, and keyboards! There's a bit of vocals on the record from a female singer – but most of the tracks just have this gentle instrumental flowering – moving through an album-length suite that includes the tracks "Caves", "Groover", "River To The Sea", "Song Of The Last Whale", "The Sea", and "Wave Birth". Way Of The Sun is a set that's got a few sharper edges than some of the previous records by Jade Warrior – yet one that still hangs nicely in that Eastern-inspired blend of jazz and prog that made their Island Records years so great! As before, the album works as a unified whole – each track crucial to the overall feel of the set – with plenty of excellent work on flute from Jon Field, amidst more conventional guitar, keyboard, and percussion. There's some occasional nice guest moments on flugelhorn, harp, and saxes – and titles include "Sun Ra", "Dance Of The Sun", "Heaven Stone", "Moontears", "Sun Child", "Carnival", and "Death Of Ra". Ultra-hip work from pianist Keith Jarrett – a session that's filled with joy and life, and which has a lot more energy than some of his albums for ECM! The work here is kind of a refinement of the freer styles that Jarrett had laid down on previous albums – performed with a strongly rhythmic undercurrent, but one that also opens up to some strong top-end melodies as well – played not only by Jarrett on piano, but also by Dewey Redman on tenor, in a group with Sam Brown on guitar, Paul Motian on drums, and Guilherme Franco and Danny Johnson on percussion. Titles include "The Rich & The Poor", "Blue Streak", "Le Mistral", "Angles Without Edges", "Treasure Island", and "Sister Fortune". CD

The trio of pianist Yasuhiro Kohno work here with a really wonderful "+ One" – the vibes of Mashiro Kanno, who really adds a heck of a lot to the long-flowing grace of the tunes in the set! The album's a live one, but it's got all the warmth and creative intimacy of the best Japanese piano dates of the 70s – a quality that has Kohno's group pushing the edges, but never going too far out – very different than a more conventional piano trio session, with a mixture of boldness and lyricism that keeps things wonderful throughout the set! Tracks are all nice and long, the group features work from Tsutomu Numakami on bass and Hironobu Fujisawa on drums – and titles include "Village Festival", "Mr Nilson", "Time For Peace", "Song Of Island", and a very groovy take on "Love For Sale". Polygram (Japan), 2000. New Copy ... $6.99
One of the best entries in Monday Michiru's yearly cycle of EP releases – and a sophisticated batch of jazz vocal tracks that takes her to a whole new level! The record's got a hip sound that reminds us of classic work by Dee Dee Bridgewater or Carmen Lundy – as Monday works with tight jazz backing, and sings in a spiritual introspective style that we'd reserve for only the work of a rare few singers! The ep's got 3 songs in all, all fairly long – and they work together beautifully as a discrete LP of jazzy soul from one of our favorite singers! CD

Stomu YamashtaSeasons – The Island Albums 1972 to 1976 (7CD set) ... CD
Island/Esoteric (UK), Mid 70s. New Copy 7CD ... $44.99 68.99
An insane amount of music from one of the most unique talents of the prog generation – an artist who was almost a genre unto himself – and who seemed to give the world something different with each new release! Stomu Yamashta was a Japanese percussionist, with training in both avant and folkloric modes – but by the time the 70s rolled around, he also broke out of his native scene, and did some amazing work in a variety of different modes in the UK and US! At the core of each of these records is Stomu's percussion talents, but they're used in very different ways, depending on the nature of the recording – as some are spare and more acoustic, others have more rock elements, and some are soundtrack-related projects too! The set also ends with work from a supergroup that had a heck of an interesting lineup – the group Go, which mixed Yamashta's percussion with an unlikely assemblage that included Steve Winwood, Klaus Schulze, and Al Di Meola! All that music is brought together here in one big box that features all the albums with their original cover art, plus a booklet of notes – albums that include Floating Music, The Man From The East, Freedom Is Frightening, One By One, Raindog, Go, and Go Live From Paris. Strut (UK), 1960s/Early 70s. Sealed 2LP ... $38.99
A fantastic look at the groundbreaking sounds of the Disques Debs label – one of the most important companies producing music in the French Caribbean – and an imprint whose impact was strongly felt on the other side of the Atlantic as well! The core of these grooves is that compelling biguine rhythm that flowed from Guadeloupe – almost a mix of Latin and jazz, but with a different sort of vibe of its own – which was then interwoven with elements from Cuban, European, and African styles amidst the initial decade or so of recordings on this set! Debs had strong ties with Paris, and a bit with the West African scene – and their recorded legacy almost follows old colonial paths, but in reverse – creating this wonderful criss-crossing of cultures amidst their grooves. The package is wonderful – loads of vintage photos and great notes in the best Strut Records way – and titles include "Douce Kombass" by Henri Debs Quintet, "Mr Morin" by Joseph Lacides, "Lan Mise" by Geno Exilie, "Feeling Happy" by Cyril Dias Et Son Orchestre, "Ces P'Tits Je T'Aime" by Daniel Forestal Et Sa Guitare, "Assez Fait Cancan" by Guy Conquette, "Stanislas" by Eric Virgal, "Meringue Mondey" by Remy Mondey, "Si I Bon Di I Bon" by Le Ry-Co Jazz, "Salvana" by Dolor Et Les Diables Du Rhythme, and "Van Van" by Henri Guedon Et Les Contesta. Jazzman (UK), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy ... $19.99 24.99
A great little collection that's maybe the opposite of the long-running tradition of "desert island discs" – in that the music here is hardly essential, but would be plenty of fun to hear if you were trapped alone with nowhere else to go! Think of the set as the darker side of exotica at the end of the 50s – a spot where tropical sounds mix with Latin rhythms and some rockish touches too – material from the years before surf guitars were really hitting the mainstream, but older modes were being infused with a bit of electricity and new modes of production – all in ways that make for some very cool cuts collected in the set! The package brings together rare singles from a variety of sources – and titles include "Jivaro" by Harvey Anderson, "Babalu" by Phyllis Branch, "The Lonely Sea" by Rick & Trisha, "Strictly Polynesian" by Davy Jones & The Dolphins, "Midnight" by Hank Levine, "Bongo Heat" by Coral & The South Seas, "Martinique" by Ty & Ed, "Atlantis" by Blue Bells, "Rumba Rhapsody" by Hector Cari & The Dancing Strings, "Ho Ba La La" by Dariel Kay, and "Miserlou" by Vitin Aviles Y Su Orquesta. An obscure set from Roy Haynes – recorded before his recent decade or so of comeback fame, but still plenty darn compelling! The session sort of steps off the grooves that Haynes was laying down at the end of the 70s – a style that's sometimes more electric, and often a bit funky – with nice work on keyboards, guitar, and bass bubbling alongside Roy's always-sharp lines on drums. The group's largeish, but shifts around from track to track – and includes Harry Whitaker and Dave Kikoski on keyboards, Spaceman Patterson on guitar, George Adams on tenor, Craig Handy on soprano and tenor sax, Graham Haynes on cornet, and Marcus Miller and Cecil McBee on bass. Production's nice and lean, never too "bright", as could sometimes happen in this vintage – and titles include "Waltz For Debby", "Mescalito", "George's Reggae", "Brown Skin Girl", "Green Chimneys", "Island", "Equipoise", and "Dual Exhaust". Although their name might make you think of these guys as a guitar instrumental combo, they're actually a great little exotic group – one who plays in a mode that's a heck of a lot like Martin Denny at his best! There's a highly percussive approach to the tracks that's very much in the best spirit of the smaller exotica groups of the time – one that uses vibes and lots of percussion instruments to really get the sound right. But at another level, the Surfmen actually even go things one better – by sparely using organ and electric guitar to add some even more interesting touches to the tunes – not much at all, but just enough to give the group their own sound, and to make this record one that really stands out from the pack. And once you find out that the Surfmen actually includes work by Paul Horn, Emil Richards, Alvino Rey, and Milt Holland – it's easy to see why the sound of the record is so great! Prestige, 1971/1973. Used ... Out Of Stock
A lost treasure! This set features 9 unreleased tracks recorded by Houston Person during the height of his jazz funk years for Prestige – one track with a group that includes Billy Butler on guitar, Ernie Hayes on organ, Bernard Purdie on drums, and Cecil Bridgewater on trumpet – the other eight tracks with a Latin-tinged group that includes Hank Jones, Jimmy Ponder, Victor Paz, Jerry Gonzalez, and Nicky Marrero. The Latin backings work surprisingly well for Person, whose cutting style on the tenor works against the grooves in a great way – and the use of Latin rhythms makes for a slightly different mode, but one that's every bit as soulful as his other work. Titles include "Theme From Baxter", "St Thomas", "Waking Up Alone", "Montuno Merengue", and "Nemo". CD

The second album from Toots & The Maytals to bear the title Funky Kingston – and a set that's arguably even more classic than the first – as it takes the best tunes from that set, then adds in some killers from other records too – all wrapped up in an Island Records package that gave Toots and the group instant international fame the moment it was released! Toots Hibbert's vocals are incredible – some of the most soulful of the scene at the time – and rhythms are a perfect bridge between rocksteady and early reggae – nice and lean, and about as classic as can be! Titles include cool covers of "Louie Louie" and Country Roads" – plus the massive "Pressure Drop" and "Time Tough", and the cuts "Pomp & Pride", "Funky Kingston", and "Sailin' On". ✨✧ VariousAlefa Madagascar – Salegy, Soukous, & Soul From The Red Island 1974 to 1984 ... LP
Strut (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. Sealed 2LP ... Out Of Stock
A really riveting collection of music from a scene that we've hardly heard much from before – upbeat grooves from the island nation of Madagascar, all recorded at the end of the 70s and start of the 80s – but with a vibe that sounds much older overall! The one thing that really stands out in a number of these tracks is the strong use of organ and keyboards – often in this full, swirling sort of style – infusing the grooves next to the more familiar percussion and guitar lines you might hear in other African music from the generation – although even those elements are used in ways that are pretty darn unique! The tracks often have this raw intensity that comes from both the instrumentation and the way things are put together – and the whole package is a really refreshing change from other oft-tread musical territory on the continent. Titles include "Mama" by Roger Georges, "Andosy Mora" by Jean Kelly Et Bastn, "Ngoma Hoe" by Papa James, "Izahay Mpamita" by Mahaleo, "Faraina" by Feon'Ala, "Soaliza" by Terak Anosy Group, "Oa Niny E" by Nino Rafah, "Razana Tsy Ho Meloko" by Michael, "Jazz Sega" by Jeannot Rabeson Et Son Orchestre, "Tokatoka" by Kaiamba Orchestra, "Zaka Tiako Mamolaka Keriko" by Atrefy Andriana, and "Andeha Hanarato" by Los Matadores. Muse, 1976. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
A pretty interesting little album – and very different than the usual jazz outing for Muse! Stan plays sax with The Elephant's Memory Band, a weird New York rock group who cut their share of funky tracks over the years. This album's not really all that funky – but it is kind of messed up fusion that either has the group hitting strident grooving numbers, or breaking the rhythm for some weirder numbers. The best of these is "Jazz Me Down", which is almost a funk track, and which has some strange deep-voiced vocals. Other tracks all feature nice sax from Stan, and a groove that's a bit smooth, but not unpleasant. Titles include "Uptown Walk", "Columbus Ave Sunset", "See You In Rio", and "Song For My Father". A real classic from Jeff Lorber – the kind of record that crossed-over immediately, and had a huge influence on so many different scenes! The style is smooth sweet fusion – of a sort that Lorber virtually helped invent, and so many others helped to ruin in later years – but here, things are clean and lean, very focused on the groove – and coming off with a really soulful sound! There's a great mix of acoustic and electric keys that really makes the album cook – giving it a two-dimensional feel that really comes off nicely on every tune – and the core lineup includes Lorber on keys, plus electric bass, drums, and saxes. The last album ever recorded by Arthur Lyman – a set that really returns to the spare, subtle genius of his earliest exotica albums in the 50s – but with a sound that's maybe even more stripped-down and overall! The record is very heavy in vibes, and has light woodwinds, some sound effects, and just a bit of percussion – and rather than try to evoke the dynamic energy of the jungle, Lyman is here in a more meditative style – almost as if he's watching the sun set down over the Pacific, while sipping on a mai tai, and letting the last glow of the day wash over him. The sound is beautiful, and very meditative – and titles include "The Magic Islands", "Akaka Falls", "Shells", "Waipi'o", and "Imi Au Ia Oe". LP, Vinyl record album

World Pacific/Blue Note, 1969. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A great double-header – one that features 2 classic Jean-Luc Ponty albums from the 60s! Record one presents the album King Kong – an album that features Ponty, who was working with Frank Zappa at the time, playing a set of electric jazz takes on Zappa tunes – with lots of added help from George Duke, who was also working with Zappa too! The set's almost a "birth of fusion" one – with Zappa arrangements that are clearly in a jazz-rock mode – and lots of electric bass, electric piano, and electric violin in the set. Tracks are long, and riff-heavy – and other players include Ernie Watts, Wilton Felder, Buell Neidlinger, and Ian Underwood. Titles include "America Drinks & Goes Home", "Music For Electric Violin & Low Budget Orchestra", "King Kong", and "Twenty Small Cigars". Record two features The Jean Luc Ponty Experience With The George Duke Trio – a much better album than you'd expect, without any of the noodling of the players' later albums! At the time of this set, Duke and Ponty are breaking out of the hippie weirdness of the Zappa records, and get a bit more serious – working through some long, extended modal grooves that rank with the best MPS work by either player. Duke's on electric piano, ringing out in a weird spacy sound, and Ponty's violin is mostly restrained, used to cast waves of sound over the top of the tracks, in a way that works well with Duke's soulful resonant approach. Titles include "Foosh", "Cantaloupe Island", and "Starlight Starbright". LP, Vinyl record album

Lou Reed's maybe a bit more subtle here than during his years with the Velvet Underground, and his earliest solo records – but he also has this new sort of maturity that really points the way forward to the years to come! Coney Island Baby further marks the continuing legacy of Lou Reed as a hell of a songwriter – able to portray human strivings and failings with a surprisingly sensitive ear – all in the kind of modes that might not hit you over the head the first time around, but which are completely compelling over the next few spins. There's always that wry little quality to Reed's vocals here – that bite that almost comes as a weary attempt to snap back at the world – and while the album's maybe not the most transgressive release of 1976, it's got a subtle power that's made it a lot more long-lasting than some of its contemporaries. Key tracks from a really important time in Jamaican music – the wonderful rocksteady years of the late 60s, when the Kingston crowd were really coming with a unique groove of their own! The music here isn't really reggae, but kind of a rougher precursor – and one that still shows plenty of influence from American soul of the time – albeit the deeper, more laidback styles that were having an undeniable influence on Jamaica. Smooth fusion from guitarist Eric Gale – 2 80s albums for Elektra, back to back on one CD! Island Breeze has a sound that lives up to its name – one with slight tropical touches in the rhythms and the instrumentation, and a way of recording Gale's guitar that brings out a bit more brightness in the tone. Arrangements are by Bob James and Jimmy Kachulis – and titles include "Boardwalk", "We'll Make It", "Island Breeze", "Dark Romance", and "I Know That's Right". Blue Horizon is a bit more focused – a record with a style that's still relatively smooth, yet a bit more in the mode that we like on Gale's 70s work. The core group features some nice keyboards from Peter Schott and drums from Freddie Waits – and Hugh Masekela guests on flugelhorn on a bit of the album. Tracks have a solidly fusion-based approach, yet are relaxedly soulful, never with too much jamming – and titles include "When Tokyo", "Clock A Pa", "Call Me At The Same Number", "97th & Columbus", "Wait Until The City Sleeps", "Blue Horizon", and "Mako D'Amour". There's a nice sense of class to the whole set – slow-stepping sounds that really bring back a time when soul music was awash in more sophisticated modes – as you'll hear on cuts that include "Early Fall", "Stay With Me Tonight", "Point Of View", "I'd Rather Be Lonely", "Do You Remember", "The More You Give The More You Get", and their cover of "Let's Get It On". Warm soul from By All Means – a key group in the quiet storm soul years of the mid 80s – one that's equally well-suited to mellow numbers and more upbeat groovers! The trio features two male vocalists and one female – Jimmy Varner, Billy Sheppard, and Lynn Roderick – but the style of the record often has one singer coming out strongly in the lead, while the other two harmonize sweetly to warm things up at just the right moments. The beats are a bit heavy, but still quite far from some of the too-clunky commercial modes of the time – and the set features a bit of a jazzy undercurrent, which makes for a nicely classy sound. Frankie Goes To HollywoodWelcome To the Pleasuredome ... CD
ZTT/Island, 1984. Used ... $5.99
Arguably one of the greatest concept albums of the 80s – and the only really strong full length album cut by Frankie Goes To Hollywood! At the time of the set, the group was riding high on the success and controversy of their singles "Relax" and "Two Tribes" – but in the ambitious ZTT mode, sought to expand their sound way past familiar hits, and into a realm of sonic exploration that rivaled that of labelmates Art Of Noise. Don't get us wrong, because the Frankie of this album is still very much in groove-oriented territory – but they also let Horn take over with some more striking tunes that are both longer and shorter than the usual pop track – offsetting the vocal numbers on the record with a rich tapestry of musical backdrops that also more firmly forward the group's social and sexual leanings. The album features surprising covers of "War", "Do You Know The Way To San Jose", and "Born To Run" – plus the hits "Relax" and "Two Tribes", and the original numbers "Welcome To the Pleasure Dome", "Krisco Kisses", "The Ballad Of 32", "Wish The Lads Were Here", "Black Night White Light", "The Only Star In Heaven", "The Power Of Love", and "Bang". Early work from Gwen Guthrie – produced by Sly & Robbie, but with a sweet modern soul sound that's got a lot less of their influence than you'd guess! The sound is much more New York than Jamaica – and that's probably due to some great instrumental backing on keyboards by the likes of Harry Whitaker, Bernie Worrell, and Wally Badarou – all massive talents that bring a nice sweet jazzy sound to the best cuts on the record. There's a definite 80s sing-song groove going on – in that not-yet-top-of-the-charts soul sound that you'd hear on the better small urban stations at the time – moving back and forth nicely, in a strong link between the mainstream and the underground clubs! Island/BGO (UK), Early 70s. New Copy 2CD ... $8.99 16.99
Three overlooked albums by British singer Mike Harrison – all brought together in a single set! First up is the self-titled Mike Harrison – a wonderful solo debut from the singer who made Spooky Tooth sound so great on their albums, maybe even sounding better here on his own! The album is clearly conceived and put together by Mike – with backup help from The Junkyard Band, who underscore the yearning, earnest qualities in his vocals – spun out with a snakey, raspy charm, with a sound that's maybe a more intimate take on territory explored by Procol Harum. The songs are great, and the whole record has a quality level that really attests to the all-great quality of Island Records at this point – with tracks that include "Pain", "Lonely People", "Mother Nature", "Call It A Day", "Damian", and "Wait Until The Morning". Smokestack Lightning is great solo work from Mike Harrison, ex-Spooky Tooth – a fantastic singer who should have been huge as a solo act – maybe a bit like Colin Blunstone, whose sound with The Zombies was so important, but could never have a huge career on his own – even while he created some wonderful albums in the process! This set's a well-crafted gem through and through – recorded at Muscle Shoals, but with a sound that's free of any of the hoke of those oft-used studios – as instead of bending to southern modes, Harrison uses the ace musicians to underscore some of the depth of his own approach in a really great way. Titles include "Turning Over", "Wanna Be Free", "Tears", "What A Price", and "Paid My Dues". Rainbow Rider has Mike Harrison maybe hitting some harder rock territory than before, with some roots rock moments – more a part of the overall sound of the group, and with some pretty heavy guitars up there in the lead – which seems to bring out a very different quality in Mike's vocals. Titles include "Okay Lay Lady Lay", "Like A Road Leading Home", "Maverick Woman Blues", "You & Me", "I'll Keep It With Mine", and "Friend". CD

Hi-TensionHi-Tension (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Island/Robinsongs (UK), 1978. New Copy ... $12.99 16.99
A sweet set from the early years of the UK funk scene – the smoking debut from Hi Tension, and a set that's filled with sharp numbers throughout! There's a strong jazzy undercurrent to the music – a bit like some of the sounds you might hear from the Fantasy Records scene – no surprise, since those records were always huge on the British scene – and quite possibly had an influence on the direction of Hi Tension here – with tight rhythms on the bottom, complicated jazzy changes on the instrumentation, and some tight horn parts that really soar along strongly with the vocals! Lyrics are mostly presented in an ensemble mode – produced warmly, with almost an Earth Wind & Fire mode – and the album was put together by Kofi Ayivor of Osibisa, with a slight touch of Afro funk in the mix. Tracks include the classics "Hi Tension" and "British Hustle" – plus "Autumn Love", "You're My Girl", "Power & Lightning", "Peace On Earth", and "Unspoken". CD features bonus tracks – "British Hustle (7" version)", "Hi Tension (7" version)", and "Girl I Betcha". CD

Miles JayeMiles ... CD
Island/Universal (Japan), 1987. New Copy ... $12.99 14.99
Miles Jaye once played the cop in the Village People, but don't hold that against him – because by the time of this debut set, he'd really crafted his style as a soul singer – which makes the record a key part of a new trend in male soul for the late 80s! Jaye's got a cool, sophisticated style – one that gets some nice warm touches on the arrangement and production, which include lots of touches from Miles himself – plus help from luminaries like Dexter Wansel, Hubert Eaves, and Branford Marsalis. Titles include "Lazy Love", "Special Thing", "I've Been A Fool For You", "Desiree", "Happy 2 Have U", "Come Home", "I Cry For You", and "Let's Start Love Over". CD

Grace JonesPortfolio ... LP
Island, 1976. Very Good+ Gatefold ... $16.99
A landmark little record from Grace Jones – a set that started off as one of those "hey, let's see if this model can sing" sort of records – but which has gone onto become an enduring classic! Most of the tunes are older ones, but they're remade with a soaring Sigma Sound groove by the best in Philly – taking sometimes-cloying lyrics and pushing them into hipper disco territory for the 70s – all with that odd wink and subtle sense of irony that would emerge more clearly in Jones' later records. Tom Moulton produced and mixed, and titles include "I Need A Man", "La Vie En Rose", "Sorry", "Tomorrow", "What I Did For Love", and "Send In The Clowns". LP, Vinyl record album

Maybe the best place to start if you're looking to dive into the short but incredible legacy of music left behind by Bob Marley – as the album marked a real global turning point for the singer, and includes a number of tracks that are still his standout classics after all these years! The set was recorded in London, but with a nicely understated sound – just the right focus on all the best elements of the Wailers sound – in a way that creates a magical flow throughout. And sure, some of the cuts here are some of Bob's biggest hits ever – but heard in the context of the core album, they've got a lot more righteous power than when they're cribbed for a commercial or a TV soundtrack. Titles include "Natural Mystic", "Three Little Birds", "One Love/People Get Ready", "Exodus", "So Much Things To Say", "Guiltiness", "The Heathen", "Jamming", "Waiting In Vain", and "Turn Your Lights Down Low". ✨✧ Bob Marley & The WailersCatch A Fire ... LP
Island, 1973. Near Mint- ... Just Sold Out!
The first Bob Marley album on Island Records – and the start of a really legendary run that would not only transform reggae in the 70s, but the rest of popular music as well! Chris Blackwell's partially at the helm on production, but the album was mostly recorded in classic Kingston studios – Randy's, Dynamic, and Harry J's – and retains the same vibe as some of Marley's earlier work, but with more of the forward-thinking vision he brought to his time at Island. Bunny Livingston lays down some excellent percussion on the set – and rhythm is from the team of Aston and Carlton Barrett on bass and drums. Titles include the classic "Stir It Up" – plus "Slave Driver", "Kinky Reggae", "High Tide Or Low Tide", and "Concrete Jungle". LP, Vinyl record album

Bob Marley & The WailersNatty Dread ... LP
Island, 1974. Very Good+ ... Just Sold Out!
A breakthrough album from Bob Marley – a set that was recorded equally in Kingston and London, and which has a globe-spanning vibe to match! Marley's star had already been rising by the time of this set – but this album helped cement both his lasting power, and the worldwide influence of the music that Jamaica was bringing forth – served up by a sharp lineup that includes Aston "Family Man" Barrett on bass, Carlton Barrett on drums and percussion, Touter on piano and organ, and Al Anderson on lead guitar – as well as soulful backing from the I-Threes. A good chunk of the record was recorded at Harry J's – not as tightly as some of the later Island Records material – and titles include the classics "Lively Up Yourself", "No Woman No Cry", "Rebel Music", "Natty Dread" and "Talkin' Blues". One of many posthumous compilations of Marley's work with the Wailers, and not a bad one at that. Without setting out to be a greatest hits, this compilation focuses on some of Marley's more topical, political songs, including the classics "Get Up, Stand Up (live)" and "Them Belly Full", plus "Ride Natty Ride" and "So Much Trouble In the World". 10 tracks in all, this set also features "Rebel Music (3 O'Clock Road Block)", "Rat Race", 'War/No More Trouble (live)", "Roots", "Slave Driver" and "Crazy Baldhead". This pressing adds an 11th bonus track, "Wake Up & Live (parts 1 & 2)". CD

The last studio album issued by Bob Marley during his too-short lifetime – and the kind of record that continued to keep him at the top of the global scene – not just a reggae star, but a worldwide superstar who would have kept the fire burning for decades! The group is rock-solid – backing from the I Threes, lead guitar from Junior Murvin, and great rhythms from Aston and Carlton Barrett. There's no letting up for Marley here – either in his political stance or fiery songwriting and titles include classic takes of "Redemption Song", "Could You Be Loved", "Bad Card", "We & Dem", and "Coming In From the Cold". Includes the bonus tracks "Redemption Song (band version)" and "Could You Be Loved (12" mix)". CD

Osibisa's smoothing things up a bit by this point – going for a groove that's partially African-inspired, but which also has some mainstream Caribbean touches, and an overall approach that uses more mainstream R&B styles than on some of their previous records. The sound isn't bad, though, and the best numbers have a smooth jazzy kind of groove setting things up – almost an African take on the Fantasy Records sound, with a sunny Sunday afternoon sort of feel. ✨✧ Padlock (with Gwen Guthrie)Padlock – Special Mixes By Larry Levan ... LP
Garage/Island, 1983. Very Good+ ... $14.99
A mini-LP, but one that packs more punch than most full length sets – thanks to a top-shelf lineup all the way through! The set's a project put together by Sly & Robbie, and recorded at Compass Point Studios – all with a groove that's kind of a dubbier take on the sound of New York dancefloors a the time – nicely bassy, slightly beaty, and topped with some really wonderful vocals from Gwen Guthrie! Larry Levan mixed the whole thing to perfection, giving it a real Paradise groove – and instrumentation is by Wally Badarou on synth, Harry Whitaker on keyboards, Darryl Thompson on guitars, and Jimmy Maelin on percussion. The set's kind of a mini-suite, based around a few key musical themes – and titles include "Padlock", "Hopscotch", "Seventh Heaven", "Peanut Butter" and "Getting Hot". LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has a bumped upper corner.)
