Alice Island BandSplendid Isolation ... LP
Warren/Wah Wah (Spain), 1974. New Copy (reissue)... $29.99
One of the more obscure outings from the British underground folk scene at the start of the 70s – a set that's way way different than contemporary work on the bigger labels, and which sounds as if it was conceived and recorded a fair bit away from the mainstream! The instrumentation is a mix of electric and acoustic guitar, electric bass, piano, and harmonium – with vocals by all three members of the trio, but in ways that are only partly harmonious – as some of the moments are more sung or spoken at cross-purposes – maybe with the energy of some of the madder parts of the Giles Giles & Fripp record, but more acoustic overall. Tunes were all penned by Roger Moore, who produced but doesn't play on the record – and titles include "Devil's Island", "Nickel Man", "Package Tour Mona Lisa", "Smoke", "Goodbye Cindy", and "The Man That I Am". Robin Jaffee FrankConey Island – Visions Of An American Dreamland 1861 to 2008 (hardcover) ... Book
Yale University Press, 2015. New Copy ... $16.99 35.00
Coney Island is a hell of a place – a refuge for New Yorkers for over 100 years, and still pretty amazing today – with a surprisingly strong legacy that also includes the park's influence on more serious artists over the decades, a legacy that's presented beautifully in this oversize book! The volume's not a glossy presentation of the tourist mecca – but instead a very well-done, well-researched art book – featuring paintings, photographs, film stills, and other images that show the way that Coney Island figured in the larger high art community in and around New York – representations by folks as diverse as Weegee, Woody Allen, Robert Mapplethorpe, Bruce Davidson, Reginald Marsh, and dozens of others. The large book is a monograph for a museum exhibit, but clearly goes far beyond the event – and also features text by Charles Musser, Robin Jaffee Frank, Josh Glick, and others. 286 heavy hardcover pages – with color and black and white images throughout! ✨✧ Keith JarrettTreasure Island ... LP
Impulse, 1974. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $14.99
Ultra-hip work from pianist Keith Jarrett – a session that's filled with joy and life, and which has a lot more energy than some of his albums for ECM! The work here is kind of a refinement of the freer styles that Jarrett had laid down on previous albums – performed with a strongly rhythmic undercurrent, but one that also opens up to some strong top-end melodies as well – played not only by Jarrett on piano, but also by Dewey Redman on tenor, in a group with Sam Brown on guitar, Paul Motian on drums, and Guilherme Franco and Danny Johnson on percussion. Titles include "The Rich & The Poor", "Blue Streak", "Le Mistral", "Angles Without Edges", "Treasure Island", and "Sister Fortune". LP, Vinyl record album

Monday MichiruIntrospection (Afternoon Dreams/Changes/The Island) ... CD
Polygram (Japan), 2000. New Copy ... $6.99
One of the best entries in Monday Michiru's yearly cycle of EP releases – and a sophisticated batch of jazz vocal tracks that takes her to a whole new level! The record's got a hip sound that reminds us of classic work by Dee Dee Bridgewater or Carmen Lundy – as Monday works with tight jazz backing, and sings in a spiritual introspective style that we'd reserve for only the work of a rare few singers! The ep's got 3 songs in all, all fairly long – and they work together beautifully as a discrete LP of jazzy soul from one of our favorite singers! CD

Strut (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 2LP ... $28.99 29.99
A really riveting collection of music from a scene that we've hardly heard much from before – upbeat grooves from the island nation of Madagascar, all recorded at the end of the 70s and start of the 80s – but with a vibe that sounds much older overall! The one thing that really stands out in a number of these tracks is the strong use of organ and keyboards – often in this full, swirling sort of style – infusing the grooves next to the more familiar percussion and guitar lines you might hear in other African music from the generation – although even those elements are used in ways that are pretty darn unique! The tracks often have this raw intensity that comes from both the instrumentation and the way things are put together – and the whole package is a really refreshing change from other oft-tread musical territory on the continent. Titles include "Mama" by Roger Georges, "Andosy Mora" by Jean Kelly Et Bastn, "Ngoma Hoe" by Papa James, "Izahay Mpamita" by Mahaleo, "Faraina" by Feon'Ala, "Soaliza" by Terak Anosy Group, "Oa Niny E" by Nino Rafah, "Razana Tsy Ho Meloko" by Michael, "Jazz Sega" by Jeannot Rabeson Et Son Orchestre, "Tokatoka" by Kaiamba Orchestra, "Zaka Tiako Mamolaka Keriko" by Atrefy Andriana, and "Andeha Hanarato" by Los Matadores. Nicely selected collection of tracks from Grace Jones' years at Island Records – when she was a genre-bending club queen who turned out some pretty fantastic cuts. A few numbers on here don't hold up that well these days, but we're surprised at how fresh some of this material sounds – especially with the rediscovery of the post-punk Danceteria sort of scene. Titles include "Pull Up To The Bumper", "Love Is The Drug", "Slave To The Rhythm", "My Jamaican Guy", "I Need A Man", "Walking In The Rain", and "Private Life". CD

Masterful early 70s reggae from Toots & The Maytals – released first in 1971, and first reissued with this killer tracklist a few years later into the 70s – and flat out classic! The reggae rhythms are steeped in raw soul and R&B for truly distinctive vibe. Breezy Caribbean sounds that meld with heavy soul for an overall vibe that paved the way for most massively popular reggae music of all time. It does get much more wonderful than this, folks! The Island version essentially pairs up material from the original Funky Kingston release with alternate numbers from the In The Dark LP – and titles include the incredible "Time Tough", "Pomp And Pride", "Funky Kingston" and "Pressure Drop", cool covers of "Louie Louie" and Country Roads", ""Sailin' On" and more. Strut (UK), 1960s/Early 70s. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A fantastic look at the groundbreaking sounds of the Disques Debs label – one of the most important companies producing music in the French Caribbean – and an imprint whose impact was strongly felt on the other side of the Atlantic as well! The core of these grooves is that compelling biguine rhythm that flowed from Guadeloupe – almost a mix of Latin and jazz, but with a different sort of vibe of its own – which was then interwoven with elements from Cuban, European, and African styles amidst the initial decade or so of recordings on this set! Debs had strong ties with Paris, and a bit with the West African scene – and their recorded legacy almost follows old colonial paths, but in reverse – creating this wonderful criss-crossing of cultures amidst their grooves. The package is wonderful – loads of vintage photos and great notes in the best Strut Records way – and titles include "Douce Kombass" by Henri Debs Quintet, "Mr Morin" by Joseph Lacides, "Lan Mise" by Geno Exilie, "Feeling Happy" by Cyril Dias Et Son Orchestre, "Ces P'Tits Je T'Aime" by Daniel Forestal Et Sa Guitare, "Assez Fait Cancan" by Guy Conquette, "Stanislas" by Eric Virgal, "Meringue Mondey" by Remy Mondey, "Si I Bon Di I Bon" by Le Ry-Co Jazz, "Salvana" by Dolor Et Les Diables Du Rhythme, and "Van Van" by Henri Guedon Et Les Contesta. ✨✧ Gene Barge, David Matthews, & Andre DavisStony Island – Original Soundtrack ... CD
TK/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1978. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A sweet set of soundtrack funk – from a film named after one of our favorite streets in Chicago! Although the record's got an approach that's perhaps a bit tighter and smoother than anything going down on Stony in the late 70s, it does manage to share a good deal of styles with the Chi-soul scene of the time – thanks to work on the record from Chicagoans Gene Barge, Sonny Seals, and Tennyson Stephens! Many of the tracks on the set have a bad-walking soul approach – one that's kind of a mixture of funky and bluesy – and these are laid out next to some jazzier instrumentals that we like most of all – tunes that have a great funky soundtrack feel, but with a bit more fusion touches than usual, probably because of the work of David Matthews. Titles include "Percy Fired", "Party Lights", "High Speed Posters", "Back To Business", "Chase The Train", "Gangster City", "Dream Ride", and "Peace Of Mind". CD

Prestige, 1971/1973. Used ... Out Of Stock
A lost treasure! This set features 9 unreleased tracks recorded by Houston Person during the height of his jazz funk years for Prestige – one track with a group that includes Billy Butler on guitar, Ernie Hayes on organ, Bernard Purdie on drums, and Cecil Bridgewater on trumpet – the other eight tracks with a Latin-tinged group that includes Hank Jones, Jimmy Ponder, Victor Paz, Jerry Gonzalez, and Nicky Marrero. The Latin backings work surprisingly well for Person, whose cutting style on the tenor works against the grooves in a great way – and the use of Latin rhythms makes for a slightly different mode, but one that's every bit as soulful as his other work. Titles include "Theme From Baxter", "St Thomas", "Waking Up Alone", "Montuno Merengue", and "Nemo". CD

UK West Indian ex-pats in vaguely sci-fi looking outfits team up with Martin Hannett for a blistering set of post punk guitar slashing that sadly seems to have become mostly a side bar in the history of the 80s UK scene – although sometime singer Don Letts did start Big Audio Dynamite later. None of the dubby effects of their singles and little of the reggae influence are at work here, but it's still worthy of more than a passing listen! 9 tracks in all, including "Riot", "No Ball Games", "Hard Work", "Immigration", "Last White Christmas", "Heavy Traffic", "Union Games", "Too Soon" and "Omega Man". Island/Oficial Arquivos, 1976. Used ... $7.99
One of the few albums that Jorge Ben recorded for the US market – and a tight set of tunes that grooves with a heavy samba soul sound! The album features new versions of some of Jorge's older tunes, done here with a small combo that mixes electric piano, organ, guitar, and lots of percussion into the grooves – a fresh, lively and exciting approach for the mid 70s period, but timelessly so – it's as incredible now as ever! The whole album's tight, lively, and soulful – and tracks include a madly percussive take on "Taj Mahal", plus "Pais Tropical", "Chegandos Os Alquimistas", "Chove Chuva", "My Lady", "Mas Que Nada", and "Jesus De Praga". ✨✧ BugglesAge Of Plastic ... LP
Island, 1980. Very Good ... $9.99
A landmark record – even if nobody thought so at the time! The Buggles were the first group of Trevor Horn – soon to be more famous through his work with Yes, Art Of Noise, and the ZTT label – and the group's lasting legacy will forever be the tinny pop number "Video Killed The Radio Star", contained on this album, and the first video ever played on MTV. The rest of the album's pretty darn great – in a similar mode to the more famous tune, with quirky little pop styles colliding with each other, all handled by Horn and Geoff Downes, in a flutter of keyboards, spare backings, and slight guitars – kind of a last gasp of the British mainstream pop sound of the 70s, trying to exist in a post-punk world. Titles include "Kid Dynamo", "Living In the Plastic Age", "I Love You Miss Robot", "Astroboy", and "Johnny On The Monorail". . LP, Vinyl record album

John CaleSlow Dazzle ... LP
Island, 1975. Sealed ... $14.99
Dazzling work from John Cale – exactly the kind of record that shows why his solo years were so great! The record's got this unusual vibe – on one hand, it's put together like a more conventional rock set of the time – but on the other, it's got strange dark currents that run through the whole thing in very weird ways – a bit like some of the Roxy Music edges from the early years. No surprise, both Brian Eno and Phil Manzanera contribute strongly to the set – but the energy of the record definitely comes from Cale's great songwriting and offbeat vocals – and his great ear for a weird-sounding tune. Titles include "Mr Wilson", "Rollaroll", "Ski Patrol", "Guts", "The Jeweller", and Cale's famous version of "Heartbreak Hotel". LP, Vinyl record album

A record that's not only a landmark in Jamaican music – but also a set that was to reggae what Curtis Mayfield's Superfly was to 70s soul! In other words, the set not only raised the bar for all the competition, it also ended up in a lot more record collections than most of them too – maybe in part because it was a soundtrack, as was Superfly – but also because it has this global power that makes it a defining album of the genre! Jimmy Cliff is obviously the mainman here, but there's help from other key players in the growing reggae scene – and titles include Jimmy's classic "You Can Get It If You Really Want", in two versions – plus two takes on "The Harder They Come", "Many Rivers To Cross", and "Sitting In Limbo" – plus "Sweet & Dandy" and "Pressure Drop" by The Maytals, "007" by Desmond Dekker, "Johnny Too Bad" by The Slicers, "Draw Your Brakes" by Scotty, and "Rivers Of Babylon" by The Melodians. Island (UK), 2006. Used ... $2.99
A fascinating full length departure from DJ Shadow – an album that's more or less made up of genre suites – rolling from sound library groove, to hood-shaking hyphy hip hop, to topical post-Katrina commentary, to beat-driven live instrument avant funk! The album's flow is more or less held together with the occasional backing of the Heliocentrics – featuring drummer Malcolm Catto – as a tight rhythmic backdrop in a number of spots with heavy drums plus keys, vibes, bass and guitar. But even more tracks are buoyant bombs of deeply pulsing, heavily thumping contemporary hip hop. The album is ultimately kind of a mess, but it's a very ballsy one – featuring some of Shadow's most mainstream hip hop productions ever – which is actually in itself a pretty radical move when you think about it! Titles include "This Time (I'm Gonna Try It My Way)", "3 Freaks" feat Keak Da Sneak & Turf Talk, "Turf Dancing" feat The Federation & Animaniaks, "Keep Em Close" feat Nump, "Seein' Thangs" feat David Banner, "Broken Levee Blues", "Artifact (inst)", "Backstage Girl" feat Phonte Coleman, "Triplicate/Something Happened That Day", "The Tiger" feat Sergio Pizzorno & Christopher Karloff, "Erase You" feat Chris James, "What Have I Done" feat Christina Carter, "Enuff" feat Q-Tip & Lateef The Truth Speaker, "Dats My Part" feat E-40, "3 Freaks (Droop-E rmx)" feat Mistah FAB, Turf Talk & Keak Da Sneak and more. The second album from the legendary Nick Drake – one of those records we could never ever live without – and a true piece of genius that's been turning on generations of listeners since Nick first recorded it back at the start of the 70s! The format is folksy, but the execution is something else entirely – filled with jazzy phrasing, hypnotic lyrics, and arrangements that really go far beyond any cliches or contemporary work you might expect. The great Joe Boyd produced – and really helps give a strong focus to Nick's vocals and guitar – and the cool mix of added instrumentation – which includes organ and celeste from John Cale, flute and alto from Ray Warleigh, piano from Chris McGregor, and guitar from Richard Thompson. Drake's work is impossible to describe adequately, but if you've ever heard him, you probably stopped dead in your tracks the minute you first caught his voice. Brian EnoHere Come The Warm Jets ... LP
Island (UK), 1973. Very Good ... $39.99
A record that blew the world away when it was first released – and still continues to delight all these many years later! Brian Eno had first rose to fame in Roxy Music – where his sonic sensibilities and ear for electronic experimentation really added a lot to their initial albums – and here, on his own, he's in somewhat side-stepped territory – mixing things up in the art/glam generation of Roxy and Bowie, but also already showing a darkness that really sets him apart from the pack! The first three songs alone are a hell of a statement from any musician in the 70s, and the titles alone almost get at their impact – "Needles In The Camel's Eye", "The Paw Paw Negro Blowtorch", and "Baby's On Fire" – all songs that offer a rare blend of ferocity and humor that wouldn't emerge elsewhere until the punk movement. Yet Eno's hardly the forerunner of punk, but he's also not glam, metal, or anything else – a supremely impactful artist with this record, completely in his own space – like a rare breed that might include The Velvet Underground, Gram Parsons, or Bowie. Titles include "Needles In The Camel's Eye", "The Paw Paw Negro Blowtorch", "Baby's On Fire" "Blank Frank", "Some Of Them Are Old", "Cindy Tells Me", "On Some Faraway Beach", and "Dead Finks Don't Talk". LP, Vinyl record album

Fairport ConventionLiege & Lief (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Island (UK), 1970. New Copy ... $8.99 11.98
A record that really has Fairport Convention knocking it out of the park – making a bold turn towards British traditional music, but in a way that imbues these relics with a whole new life of their own! The album came at a key turning point – after an accident that took one of their members, and which almost saw the group disband – but instead turn towards the past for even deeper inspiration than some of their contemporaries, whom they'd covered on other records – at a level that seems to set Sandy Denny free into this sublime territory of her own! Denny's vocals are incredible – like a thing unlocked from some ancient vault – and they're given this wonderful focus through the growing complexity of Richard Thompson's guitar work, and the understated brilliance of Ashley Hutchings' bass – both of which bring in these modal inflections that are very 60s, and hardly conceived of as accompaniment with the original tunes. The result is tremendous – tunes that are completely transformed, as a touchstone for generations. Titles include "Matty Groves", "Reynardine", "Come All Ye", "The Deserter", "Tam Lin", and "Crazy Man Michael". Features two bonus tracks – both previously unissued – "Quiet Joys Of Brotherhood" and "Sir Patrick Spens". CD

Gwen GuthriePadlock – Special Mixes By Larry Levan ... LP
Garage/Island, 1983. Very Good ... $9.99
A mini-LP, but one that packs more punch than most full length sets – thanks to a top-shelf lineup all the way through! The set's a project put together by Sly & Robbie, and recorded at Compass Point Studios – all with a groove that's kind of a dubbier take on the sound of New York dancefloors a the time – nicely bassy, slightly beaty, and topped with some really wonderful vocals from Gwen Guthrie! Larry Levan mixed the whole thing to perfection, giving it a real Paradise groove – and instrumentation is by Wally Badarou on synth, Harry Whitaker on keyboards, Darryl Thompson on guitars, and Jimmy Maelin on percussion. The set's kind of a mini-suite, based around a few key musical themes – and titles include "Padlock", "Hopscotch", "Seventh Heaven", "Peanut Butter" and "Getting Hot". LP, Vinyl record album

Ashley HutchingsRattlebone & Ploughjack ... CD
Island/BGO (UK), 1976. New Copy ... $8.99 14.99
One of the strangest records ever from Ashley Hutchings – a set that's even more ancient-sounding and enigmatic than his music with Fairport Convention and Albion Band! In a sense, the album follows the spirit of both groups, and their effort to plumb the past and fuse it with the present – yet here, Hutchings is almost trying to create a documentary of old recordings – even though the material is all newly-recorded, but handled with a more ancient aesthetic that hearkens back to the 78rpm generation! Players aren't listed, and there's no credits at all – but it's pretty clear that Hutchings has some of his key Fairport Convention partners on board to help with the sound – which is served up in a mix of acoustic instrumental and vocal modes, sometimes with spoken introductions through each side-long collage of tunes. Island, 1982. Near Mint- ... $14.99
One of Grace Jones' best albums – recorded at a point when she was really beginning to stretch the boundaries of club music, crossing over with the early 80s post-punk/post-disco crowd through a melange of sounds that was all her own. The oveblown diva mode of her disco years is gone by this point – and in its place is a wonderfully stripped down sound that bubbles with influences from reggae, post-punk, and elsewhere! The set was recorded in Nassau, with rhythm from Sly, Robbie, and Wally Badarou – and titles include a fair bit of original numbers penned with Barry Reynolds. Tracks include "Nipple To The Bottle", "My Jamaican Guy", "The Apple Stretching", "Cry Now, Laugh Later", and "Inspiration". LP, Vinyl record album

The music is contemporary, but has lots of old school flavors underneath – hints of strings around the edges, and a warmth next to the beats – all bristling with a lively, snapping groove that pushes Chaka in ways we haven't heard in years – really unlocking that majestic power that's graced her best records from the Rufus years onwards – thanks to great production help from Switch, and David and Sarah Ruba Taylor. Island/Mobile Fidelity, 1977. Used ... $42.99
Maybe the best place to start if you're looking to dive into the short but incredible legacy of music left behind by Bob Marley – as the album marked a real global turning point for the singer, and includes a number of tracks that are still his standout classics after all these years! The set was recorded in London, but with a nicely understated sound – just the right focus on all the best elements of the Wailers sound – in a way that creates a magical flow throughout. And sure, some of the cuts here are some of Bob's biggest hits ever – but heard in the context of the core album, they've got a lot more righteous power than when they're cribbed for a commercial or a TV soundtrack. Titles include "Natural Mystic", "Three Little Birds", "One Love/People Get Ready", "Exodus", "So Much Things To Say", "Guiltiness", "The Heathen", "Jamming", "Waiting In Vain", and "Turn Your Lights Down Low". The record still has Bob working with the original Wailers lineup that includes Bunny Wailer and Peter Tosh – both of whom have enough of a presence here to really rise Marley up, and point him in the majestic direction he'd take on his later solo albums. The record features the classics "Get Up Stand Up" and "I Shot The Sherriff" – and other titles include "Duppy Conqueror", "One Foundation", "Pass It On", "Burnin & Lootin", "Hallelujah Time", and "Small Axe". An album that may well be John Martyn's crowning moment of genius – a time when he soared forward from his spare sound of a few short years ago – and found a way to bring in all these jazzy currents to his music, but all without ever going for a style that was ever over-arranged or commercially produced! Martyn's voice is amazing – completely captivating, and full of all these wonderful twists and turns – as are his guitar lines too – never in any sort of overdone way, but with a subtle power that really gives the album the sort of glow that's evoked by the cover image. The set features guest work from Richard Thomposon, Roger Powell, and Beverley Martyn – and titles include "Go Easy", "Bless The Weather", "Sugar Lump", "Walk To The Water", "Just Now", "Head & Heart", "Let The Good Things Come", "Back Down The River", and "Singin In The Rain" – with a good amount of bonus tracks including alternate takes of "Go Easy", "Walk On Water", "Back Down The River", and a single version of "May You Never". A really beautiful little record from John Martyn – a set in which he's really perfected his talents, and found a way to stand out from just about anyone else in the pack – including the best of his British folk rock contemporaries! Martyn plays acoustic guitar, but the record's hardly folk at this point – because his vocals have all these jazzy changes, maybe a bit like Joni Mitchell was hitting at the same point in her career – more sophisticated, but very organic and never forced – with this quality that makes just about every word that comes from Martyn's voice resonate with a really fantastic quality. His guitar playing is as wonderful as ever – and again, filled with jazzy phrasing without ever being jazz at all – and the whole thing is maybe a record to proudly put Martyn in the company of Nick Drake on his few classics for Island. One of Nico's darkest albums – and the kind of record we always suggest to those who doubt her genius! The incredibly spare set has Nico playing harmonium, which makes for a spooky off-kilter sound that really gives the record a somber approach – especially as the instrument sounds a heck of a lot like her voice – very dark and moody, with lots of offbeat tones! Nico also gets some hip help, too – as the set features Brian Eno on keyboards, and production by John Cale – who also plays a huge variety of odd instruments too. Titles include a sublime 9 minute reading of The Doors' "The End", one that makes the original seem like candy floss – plus the tracks "Secret Side", "Innocent & Vain", "Valley Of The Kings", "We've Got The Gold", and "It Has Not Taken Long". Island Empire, 2019. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $33.99 34.98
Poncho Sanchez is a genius – one of the leading lights of the west coast Latin scene at the end of the 70s, and a musician who's never failed to give us his best over the decades – so much so, that he may well be one of the few (along with Eddie Palmieri) who've continued to keep the jazz sound of their style growing strongly during the 21st Century! This album's an instant treasure – a nod to the greatness of John Coltrane, as you'd guess from the title – but a record that's really as distinct and powerful as Poncho's best from his older catalog – really creatively put together, with a focus not just on rhythms, but on really well-spun, well-conceived solos – modern on the edges, but swinging throughout – with work from a group that includes Francisco Torres on trombone, Ron Blake on trumpet, Robert Hardt on alto and tenor, and Andy Langham on piano. Torres handled the arrangements, and the album's got all the percussion you'd expect from a Sanchez album too – on titles that include "Soul Bourgeoisie", "Liberia", "Giant Steps", "Yam'mote", "Trane's Delight", "Todo Termino", "Sube", and "Blue Train". One of the most beautifully melodic albums ever from British reedman John Surman – a session that's almost cut in the same mode as Lol Coxhill's early 70s sides for Virgin, with Surman soloing strongly in the lead on a variety of saxes, while sparer sounds and notes echo out in the background! Surman's work on any chosen horn on the record is brilliant – free, but never too out – and wonderfully concerned with tone and sound. There's a really exploratory nature to the record – but one that's never mis-directed or lost. Surman's got a personal presence that's really amazing, and almost a level of soul that's made the record a favorite of ours for years! UnkleNever Never Land ... CD
Mo Wax/Island (Australia), 2003. Used ... $3.99
James Lavelle's Unkle takes another sharp turn with Never Never Land – a pretty atmospheric batch of longish, tripnotic and moody Brit electronic club soul. Much of the album has the same slow-building structure as the "Eye For An Eye" single – light strings and/or synths, and hollow distant percussive parts gets the ball rolling, before the loose vocals carry the tune into a massive, club-pounding chorus. It's definitely not the UNKLE of Psyence Fiction, in which DJ Shadow steered the sounds all over the map. It's a very streamlined, very mood-rock learned formula this time around, and the result comes out as a really menacing mix of a langourous, Talk Talk kind of groove, a less lumbering version of later electronic Wire, and some of the darker club sounds of recent years. Guests this time out include Pulp's Jarvis Cocker, Eno, Massive Attack's Robert del Naja and others. Tracks include "Back And Forth", "Eye For An Eye", "In A State", "I Need Something Stronger", "Panic Attack", "Invasion", "Glow", "Inside" "What Are You To Me?" and more. CD

✨✧ Nick DrakeBryter Layter ... CD
Island, 1970. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
We still do the same – and it's a pleasure to have this one in stock! Titles include "Fly", "At The Chime Of A City Clock", "Hazy Jane", "Poor Boy", and "One Of These Things First". CD
(24 bit digitally remastered edition, with lyrics and rare photos.)

✨✧ Elton JohnGoodbye Yellow Brick Road ... CD
Island/Rocket, 1973. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The crowning achievement of a young Elton John – and the record that took an already-great run of earlier records, and pushed it even further with a new depth of songwriting and imagination! The double-length set isn't exactly a concept album – at least not one with a unified narrative – but it works beautifully as a set of little pictures of the world seen through the eyes of Elton and Bernie Taupin – both at the height of their powers, and able to balance catchy commercial tunes with some grittier undercurrents. The set's filled with classics – and titles include "Candle In The Wind", "Funeral For A Friend/Love Lies Bleeding", "Bennie & The Jets", "Social Disease", "Saturday Night's Alright For Fighting", "Harmony", "Jamaica Jerk-Off", and "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road". ✨✧ Ronny JordanQuiet Revolution ... CD
Island (Canada), 1993. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An excellent early album by funky guitarist Ronny Jordan! Back when everyone seemed to have lost their groove, Ronny emerged with a strong single-note style that reminded us a heck of a lot of Grant Green or Melvin Sparks. This record features some great backings behind Ronnie's guitar, arranged by either him, Ray Hayden, or Guru. Includes the cut "The Jackal", with cool hipster poetry by Dana Bryant – plus "In Full Swing", "Come With Me", "Midnight Lady", "Mr Walker", "Slam In A Jam", and "Under Your Spell". Import version – and tough to find! CD

✨✧ Bob MarleyExodus ... LP
Island, 1977. Very Good ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
LP, Vinyl record album

One of the best-selling albums ever from Bob Marley – a classic collection of work from his all-too-short career – and one that's gone onto become as famous as Marley's individual records themselves! The collection really allows all the classics to resonate strongly, in a track order that opens them up even more – and the package also features a live track, and a production with Lee Perry too. Titles include "Get Up Stand Up", "Exodus", "Stir It Up", "Easy Skanking", "No Woman No Cry (live)", "Punky Reggae Party", "Satisfy My Soul", and "Redemption Song". LP, Vinyl record album
