A strongly message-oriented set, as you might assume from the title – and definitely the strongest work to date from the great
Isaiah Collier – one of the most righteous musicians we've had the pleasure of discovering in the past decade or so! There's a rich, vibrant feel to the whole album – and in addition to the
Chosen Few group at the core, the record features contributions from additional musicians who really expand the sound – creating this ambitious quality to the album that's easily rivals the best on Strata East or Impulse from back in the day! Like some of Archie Shepp's most majestic records for the latter,
Collier allows additional voices to come in from time to time – delivering a verbal message next to his powerful voice on tenor – with core work from Julian Davis Reid on piano, Jeremiah Hunt on bass, and Michael Shekwoaga Ode on drums – and additional work from Corey Wilkes on trumpet, Ed Wilkerson Jr on alto clarinet, Olula Negre on cello, Cassie Watson Francillon on harp, and both Kenthany Rodman and Mayshell Morris on flutes. The album's a masterpiece – and titles include "Amerikkka The Ugly", "Trials & Tribulations", "We Don't Even Know Where We're Heading", "The World Is On Fire", "Crash", "The Hate You Give Is The Love You Lose", and "The Time Is Now".
