Irma ThomasAfter The Rain (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Rounder/Craft, 2006. New Copy ... $28.99 34.99
A surprisingly nice set from Irma Thomas – recorded in a spare and stripped down way, but without any of the "too earnest" cliches that can sometimes mar other recent albums by classic soul stars! The feel here is almost gentle and easygoing at times – still in the powerful New Orleans-influenced mode of Thomas' roots, but never too forced or overdone – just rolling out with a warmth and confidence that shows that Irma doesn't have anything to prove to anyone! Production is by Scott Billington, who's worked with Thomas before – but he somehow seems to have gotten it more right here than before – and titles include "Stone Survivor", "Soul Of A Man", "Another Lonely Heart", "In The Middle Of It All", "Flowers", "I Count The Tears", "Shelter In The Rain", "Another Man Done Gone", and "Make Me A Pallet On Your Floor". Irma ThomasIrma Thomas Sings ... LP
Bandy, 1960s. Near Mint- ... $24.99
A cool collection of early work by Irma Thomas – some of the best tracks from her initial years on the Crescent City scene! Most of the numbers were written by Allen Toussaint, with a sound that certainly indicates his influence – and Irma's vocals have a crackling quality that's pretty darn great, even amidst some of the fuller sweetness of the backings. The album's a bit short on notes, but has plenty to offer in the way of music – and titles include "Two Winters Long", "Somebody Told You", "Cry On", "Gone", "Look Up", "I Done Got Over It", "It's Raining", and "Ruler Of My Heart". Soul singer Michael Allen is backed up by a smooth Italian group in this nice modern soul session from a few years ago. The tracks are nice and mellow, and Gazzara's on electric keyboards and gives the LP a nice jazzy feel. Nearly all the cuts are originals by Allen, and the set includes "Breakdown", "Black Widow", "Come On Over Girl", "Deep Inside", and "On This Island". CD

GazzaraBossa Lounge Sessions ... CD
Irma (Italy), 2020. New Copy 2CDs ... $28.99 32.99
It's been a long time since we last heard from Italian keyboardist Francesco Gazzara – but it's definitely worth the wait, as this 2CD set pulls together some great bossa-styled recordings of the past two decades – with one disc of live material recorded around the world, the other caught live in the studio! Gazzara's always had a strong commitment to vintage keyboards – and those keys sound great here amidst the groovy bossa nova rhythms – Fender Rhodes, Hammond organ, and other keyboards – mostly with just a bit of bass and percussion, plus added sax or flute on a few other tracks too. The whole thing's a great return to genius for Gazzara – the best set he's given us in years – and titles include "Chitlins Con Carne", "The Spirit Of Summer", "Hot Barbecue", "Boomerang", "Skipper Bossa", "Song For My Father", "We Had A Ball", "Black Jack", "Bahia Moon", "New Frontier", "Orinoco", "Latin Breeze", and "O Passarinho". HoneymunchNew Destination ... CD
Irma (Italy), 2011. Used ... $6.99
Spacier grooves from Honeymunch – building nicely on the Fender Rhodes, Hohner Clavinet and synth atmosphere of the previous set with a somewhat more cosmically inclined vibe and vocals by Hannes Stickel! The things we loved about the group in a more instrumentals centered approach is still a big part of the machinery – funky drums, bass and percussion, atmospheric guitars and their blend 70s sounds and contemporary clubby jazz. But the unique vox of Hannes does indeed point to a New Destination. Includes "Condor", "Lisbosa", "Last MPC", "Travel (Album Version)", "Dreams", "Mexico", "Big B", "Kicks", "Hardanger", "Travel (Kotsche Remix)" and more. CD

VariousYou Talk To Much – The Ric & Ron Story Vol 1 ... CD
Ace (UK), Late 50s. New Copy ... $11.99 18.99
A key force in the development of New Orleans soul – the homegrown Ric & Ron Records label – home to some of the best early productions from the Crescent City! The roster of talent here is really amazing – a host of artists who'd go onto develop the New Orleans style even more strongly in the 60s, mixed with some lesser-knowns who really sparkle in this setting – sharp, tight, damn soulful singles that are all delivered without any overproduction, and nicely free of all those cliches that would later overwhelm music from the Big Easy. The rhythms alone are worth the price of the record – hard-romping piano, bass, and drums that really set an instrumental fire right from the start – then pave the way for searing lead performances from the singers and instrumental stars. The set's the best we've ever seen of these early days of the label – and features 24 tracks that include "Tell It Like It Is" by Eddie Bo, "Easy Rockin" by Eddie Lang, "I Love You Still" by Joe Jones, "Come On" by Johnny Adams, "Don't Lie To Me" by Mercy Adams, "Don't Mess With My Man" by Irma Thomas, "Carnival Time" by Al Johnson, "Nobody Knows" by Martha Carter, "All Nite Long (parts 1 & 2)" by Robert Parker, "Cuttin Out" by Professor Longhair, "Let's Get It" by Edgar Blanchard, and "Rocket To The Moon" by Chris Kenner. ✨✧ Joe GordonLookin' Good! ... CD
Contemporary/OJC, 1961. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An incredible session of hardbop from early 60s LA – easily one of the hippest and hardest-hitting albums ever recorded for Contemporary Records! Joe Gordon passed away early in 1963, and this album's one of a rare few he made as a leader – but even if it was the only one, it might well be enough – because the trumpeter steps out here with an intensity and sense of imagination that easily matches the best sounds of Lee Morgan or Ted Curson during the time, often with the similar mix of modernism and grooving as the latter! The session's a quintet one – and is equally noteworthy for the presence of alto saxophonist Jimmy Woods – heard here in a mode that's a bit more straightforward than some of his own few albums, but in a way that really sets a nice edge to the whole set. Rhythm is from the trio of Dick Whittington on piano, Milt Turner on drums, and the great Jimmy Bond on bass – and they all work with the kind of complicated twists and turns you might expect from some of Blue Note's best rhythm combos of the time. Titles include "Terra Firma Irma", "Song For Richard", "Diminishing", and "Heleen" – all original tunes! CD

A beautifully overstuffed collection of early work from New Orleans soul legend Allen Toussaint – a set that not only includes many of his key recordings from the scene in the 60s, but also some of his important productions for other artists too! The package begins with Toussaint in the lead on a series of sides on CD one – working either as himself, or as Al Touson, or with The Stones, The Rubyiats, or Allen & Allen – all with these choppy, loping, heavy-grooving rhythms that were Toussaint's huge contribution to New Orleans soul right from the start! Titles include "Whirlaway", "Whipped Cream", "Moo Moo", "Wham Tousan", "Omar Khayyam", "I Don't Need One", "Baby Do Liddle", "Tomorrow", "Fat Cat", "Banana Split", and "Java". CD2 features a series of recordings done for the Minit, Instant, and Sansu labels – all with Toussaint involved either as producer, arranger, or musician – on material that forever shaped the sound of New Orleans – titles that include "A Certain Girl" by Ernie K Doe, "Over You" by Aaron Neville, "I Like It Like That (parts 1 & 2)" by Chris Kenner, "Sophisticated Cissy" by The Meters, "Holy Cow" by Lee Dorsey, "I'm Evil Tonight" by Betty Harris, "Oogsey Moo" by Jessie Hill, "It Will Stand" by The Showmen, "Ruler Of My Heart" by Irma Thomas, "Fortune Teller" by Benny Spellman, and "Hot Tamales (parts 1 & 2)" by The Primemates. 50 tracks in all! Enja/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1978. New Copy ... $13.99
Lovely lyrical sounds from Tommy Flanagan – a pianist who can be as deft as a bopper, but also bring in some richer currents of soul as well! Case in point is this great album from the late 70s – a time when Flanagan wasn't as much in the recording spotlight as the decade before, but a period when he'd actually matured a lot more as a player – able to step effortlessly between both his inclinations, especially when working with a group this great – a trio that features George Mraz on bass and Elvin Jones on drums! Tommy's got a touch on the keys that's subtle at times, but extremely powerful – a knowledge of notes and colors that's never overstated, but always right on the money. Titles include a great reading of the Tom McIntosh tune "Cup Bearers", plus "Maybe September", "Confirmation", "50 21", and "It Never Entered My Mind". CD

Bethlehem, 1955. Very Good+ ... $1.99
A surprisingly great set that features Francis Faye singing jazz renditions of older folk songs – one of the first such sessions of its type (the genre would become more popular a few years later), and done with an approach that has the songs all re-tuned for a 50s modern ear by Russ Garcia, who handled arrangements for the set. Howard Roberts plays a nicely raspy guitar at the bottom of some of the backings, giving them a slightly folksy flourish, but Garcia's mostly using a four-trombone frontline to push the jazz component of the tunes. Roost, 1947/1953. Used ... $8.99
Not the famous Verve Records pairing of Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker – but instead a more obscure live date from 1947, but one that really lets you hear the genius that happens when both players take the stage! The tunes have this approach that really hits at the most creative side of bop at the time – maybe even more open, expressive, and filled with larger ideas than some of the early singles that were coming out in 1947 – in a way that makes the whole thing a really important document of the complexity that was in the music, right from the start. The pair really stretch out on a fantastic two part reading of "Night In Tunisia (parts 1 & 2)", then soar through "Groovin High (parts 1 & 2)", "Confirmation", and "Dizzy Atmosphere". The second half of the set features some more live material, but just with Dizzy Gillespie in the lead, from 1953 – with Bill Graham on alto and baritone, plus a bit of vocals from Joe Carroll. Now Again, 2014. Used Gatefold ... $5.99
They definitely got the title right on this one – because the group never seems to move in any sort of direct line – instead always tripping around nicely with all these hip little twists and turns! Karl Hector & The Malcouns are the same loose collective of players you'll know from their work as The Whitefield Brothers, Poets Of Rhythms, and other famous combos – and here they take on a whole host of exotic rhythms and instrumental elements – but always in a way that mixes them up with the heavy funk we've come to expect! There's a bit more psych at play with The Malcouns than some of the other groups from the musicians – which seems to really set them free to explore the outer limits of sonic consciousness – all with the feel of some weird electric ethno experimental project on a late 60s label like Limelight or Verve. Afro Funk elements crop up from time to time, but always in a relatively abstract way – and titles include "El Gusto", "Girma's Lament", "Kaifa (parts 1 & 2)", "Bring It On Down", "Mission Control", "Who's Foolin Who", and "Sharpville Massacre". Black Is The Color is some of the most ambitious electric work from Joe Henderson to date – a record that really has him stretching out from his previous small combo keyboard sets, into a space that's much fuller and even more righteous! Frequent partner George Cables is very much in force on electric piano – helping create that floating middle-level sound that really lets Henderson find some new space on tenor – as well as soprano sax and flute. Other players are a range of different musicians with a similar spirit – and include David Horowitz on synthesizer, Ralph MacDonald and Airto on percussion, Jack DeJohnette on drums and electric piano, Dave Holland on acoustic bass, Ron Carter on electric bass, and Georg Waldenius on guitar. Some of the cuts have a Brazilian tinge, others have a moody fusiony feel – really stretching out with intensity! Titles include "Black Is The Color Of My True Love's Mind", "Terra Firma", "Current Events", and "Vis-a-Vis". CD

Hollywood PersuadersDrums A Go Go (Japanese paper sleeve edition – with bonus tracks) ... CD
Original Sound/Airmail (Japan), 1965. Used ... $26.99
Drums A Go Go from the Hollywood Persuaders – a groovy little group who featured a bit of work from a young Frank Zappa! The combo have a killer studio approach that takes a standard guitar/tenor 60s instrumental mode, and filters it through an early 10-track machine – invented by producer/group leader Paul Buff, and used to create lots of extra effects as the set rolls on! The style's never too trippy to lose its groove, but the tracks themselves are filled with plenty of great twists and turns – and the all-instrumental romp is made even better by the freshness of the tunes – most of which are originals by Buff. Titles include "Drums A Go Go", "Tijuana", "Thunderbird", "Forget It", "Last Night", "Rush Street", "Persuasion", "Sunset Strip", and "North Beach". CD features 5 bonus tracks – including "Drums", "Agua Caliente", "Yes I Want To Dance", "Juarez", and "Grunion Run". CD

Prestige, 1956. Used ... $7.99
An unusual title, but one that refers to Jackie McLean in quartet, quintet, and sextet formation – a growing lineup that develops along the course of the record, as new players are added into the mix with a casual, almost blowing session approach! The set begins with Jackie's alto set out in spare territory with Mal Waldron on piano, Doug Watkins on bass, and Art Taylor on drums – plenty of space to solo on "Sentimental Journey" and "Why Was I Born" with sharp changes and deeply soulful tones that really push past the conventions of the tunes – and as the record moves on, Hank Mobley steps in on tenor and Donald Byrd on trumpet – expanding out the sound for nicely-blown versions of"Abstraction", "Confirmation", and "Contour". Michael NesmithDifferent Drum – The Lost RCA Victor Recordings ... CD
RCA/Real Gone, Early 70s. New Copy ... $15.99 16.99
That's a country-looking Mike Nesmith on the cover – which is no surprise, as these cuts were all recorded during Nesmith's great early 70s country rock years on RCA – although none of them were issued at the time! Those in the know love Mike's fantastic records with The First National Band – done after his time in The Monkees, at a time when he was really letting his hair down and his songwriting skills flow – to a point where he was joining the hipper country-inspired world of The Flying Burrito Brothers and The Byrds! Those modes are in full flourish here – in a set that features 16 vocal numbers from the RCA years, including many rare alternates – and 8 more instrumentals, which show the wonderful use of pedal steel from Red Rhodes, and some of the other hip players on the sessions. Titles include "American Airman", "Six Days On The Road", and "Circle Sky" – plus rare alternates of "Some Of Shelly's Blues", "Marie's Theme", "Roll With The Flow", "Different Drum", "Tengo Amore", "Dedicated Friend", "Texas Morning", "Rene", "Listen To The Band", and other vocal tunes – some in very different arrangements. Instrumental tunes include "Hollywood", "Tan My Hide", "You Are My One", "Born To Love You", and "Magnolia Simms" – and the set also features a bonus "Loose Salute" radio spot too! CD

Gelson Oliveira & Luiz EwerlingTerra ... LP
Mad About Records (Portugal), 1983. New Copy (reissue)... $36.99
Sharp-changing fusion in the best Brazilian mode – one of those independent gems from the early 80s that really helped push the whole scene forward! Gelson Oliveira plays guitar and Luiz Ewerling plays drums – and the record's full of these great rhythms, nice time changes, and fantastic shades of mood – and Oliveira often sings, compressing his vocals down amidst the instruments – in that Minas Geraes mode started by Milton Nascimento, Lo Borges, and their contemporaries! But the set's also a very strong jazz album overall – and Gelson solos too, in a lineup that also includes Jose Alberto Salgado E Silva on alto sax, Luis Santos on flute, and Fernando Corona on keyboards. Wonderfully warm, and beautifully balanced – with titles that include "Vagalume", "Irmazinha", "Novos Horizontes", "Picadeiro", "O Vale Do Quilombo", "Salve Se Quem Souber", and "Veio Ao Mundo". Carol Pansei delivers a heck of a lot in the space of a small combo album – work on piano, violin, and flugelhorn – plus these really lovely wordless vocals that dip, turn, and glimmer around the tunes – almost in a legacy of Brazilian jazz that goes back to Flora Purim! The setting is a small combo one – just guitar, bass, and drums added to Carol's overdubbed performances – and the album has this very natural, organic flow – one that really takes us back to some of our favorite Brazilian jazz efforts from years back, particularly some of the 80s gems on the Pointer and Som Da Gente labels. Titles include "Irmandade Da Luz", "Cordao Astral", "Flor Da Vida", "Transmutacao Violeta", "Afeto", "Somos Todos Um", and "Luz De Estrela E Diamante". CD

Fantasy/OJC, 1950. Used ... $2.99
Posthumous issue of an early 50s live set by Charlier Parker – one of the many that were rushed to the public in the years after his early death. The set, like many of the other live ones from the time, isn't recorded that well – but the music is still pretty wonderful. There's a real focus on Bird in the way the microphone was set up – so although you hear the rest of the band comping in the background, the album almost works like a session of solo sax work by Parker – as his alto is right out front in the mix, playing with a faltering style at times – but in a way that only seems to deepen our vision of his genius. Players include Red Rodney on trumpet and Al Haig on piano – and titles include "Ornithology", "Star Eyes", "Visa", "I Didn't Know What Time It Was", and "Confirmation". CD

Perez PradoVoodoo Suite – Plus Six All Time Greats ... LP
RCA, 1955. Very Good+ ... $14.99
A great collaboration between Perez Prado and trumpeter Shorty Rogers – one in which Rogers' solos sparkle brilliantly over the top of Perez's tight Latin rhythms – all in a style that's as moody as it is evocative and rhythmic! Side one features the extended "Voodoo Suite" – a side-long track that builds nicely on rootsy Latin rhythms that are much freer than Prado's pop work of the 50s – and which features a growing jazz horizon at the edges, filled with players who include Bud Shank on alto and flute, Bob Cooper on tenor, Shelly Manne on drums, and Pete Candoli on trumpet – in a larger section underneath Shorty Rogers' solos. Side two features shorter tracks recorded a year later – a bit more in the standard Prado mode, but still with a really dynamic feel, and contributions from jazz players like Candoli and Rolf Erikson on trumpets, Willie Maiden on tenor, and Jay Hill on trombone. Titles include "Music Makers", "In The Mood", "St. James Infirmary", and "Jumpin At The Woodside". LP, Vinyl record album

A fantastic record from Prince – a double-length set that came out at a time when the purple one was brimming over with energy and new ideas – and a step slightly in the direction of more socially conscious material! Everything that was great about Prince before the record is completely intact – his amazing ability to create funky grooves, slinky sensuality, and songs that are so catchy, they can win over audiences on both sides of the fence. One the most unusual albums in the fuana style from Cape Verde – an early 80s variation on the mode that was first created by fusion European accordions and local rhythms on the island of Santiago – taken here into much groovier electronic territory! Keyboards take over lots of the space that would have been handled by the handheld acoustic instrument in the past – and rhythms are often fast and somewhat frenetic – given electric basslines that bubble and dip as quickly as the keyboards, all topped by the vocals of Antonio Sanches, who's got this way of almost singing and shouting at the same time! The grooves are fast and hypnotic – and titles include "Amor De Irmao", "Bencao De Gente Grande", "Pinta Manta", "Bem De Fora", "Amizade Belo Pereira", and "Desgracada". LP, Vinyl record album

Fierce funky work from this late 80s UK duo – contemporaries of Soul II Soul, Loose Ends, and some of the other big British acts of the time – but a pair who never fully got their due! The "street soul" title here is really well-placed – as the grooves have a style that's an evolution of earlier electro modes – warmed up nicely, in the style that Jazzie B and his generation were bringing to the scene – but maybe still lean enough in construction to still appeal to fans of the previous generation! Two tracks here get a bit clubby, but in a good way, and the others are more in a midtempo groove, nicely bouncing along with the beats – on titles that include "R U Available", "Change/Love", "In & Out Of Love", "It's All Over", "Waiting 4 Your Love", and "The Way Love Is". Alto genius Bobby Watson is sporting a haircut that's a bit dated on the cover, but sounding completely classic on this excellent live set from the European scene of the 90s – material that stands as a really nice contrast to some of his work in the studio! Bobby's always got such a tight, tremendous, song-based style on his older recordings, it's a nice change to hear him stretch out in a looser live format – which he definitely does here on long tracks that are mostly familiar numbers, but really changed up by Watson and the group! The quartet features Dado Moroni on piano, Hein Van De Geyn on bass, and Hans Van Oosterhout on drums – all as open to explore as Bobby himself – on long tracks that include "Confirmation", "Footprints", "The Shadow Of Your Smile", "Cherokee", and "Blues For Charlie". ✨✧ Bobby Blue BlandThat's The Way Love Is – Here's The Man/Two Steps From The Blues (plus bonus tracks) ... CD
Duke/Jasmine (UK), 1961/1962. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Two incredible records from Bobby Blue Bland – Two Steps From The Blues is quite possibly the greatest one he ever made! The set's got an amazing something special that's unlike most other material of the time – a bit blues, but a lot of soul too – still with some echoes of R&B in the jazzier charts used for the backdrop, but presented with a rock-solid style that definitely points the way towards many sounds and styles to come in the 60s. And although Bland recorded many of these tracks as separate singles, there's a way they're put together here that makes the whole thing sound completely marvelous together – a really well-conceived track list that shows that Bobby's an even greater artist in the space of a full record. The arrangements are perfect, and Bobby's rough soulful voice is blended in this amazing way with killer horn arrangements that are far more sophisticated than most stuff that ever came after this, and which never get in the way, but only back up his deep emotion. The album's a motherlode of classics by the man, with gems that include "Two Steps From The Blues", "Cry Cry Cry", "I Don't Want No Woman", "I'm Not Ashamed", "Don't Cry No More", "Lead Me On", and "I Pity The Fool". And hell, even his version of "St James Infirmary" is pretty wonderful – something we never thought we'd say about that song. Here's The Man is one of the fantastic Duke LPs by Bobby Bland from the early 60's, with a rootsy southern soul sound that prefaces later sounds to come out of Stax and Muscle Shoals. Includes the great cut "You're The One (That I Adore)", plus "You're Worth It All", "Your Friends", and "Ain't That Loving You". This set also includes 4 bonus tracks – "How Does A Cheating Woman Feel", "Blue Moon", "Yield Not To Tempation", "That's The Way Love Is", and "Call On Me". Beautiful stuff all the way through. CD

A record filled with cover images that run from Richard Nixon to Elvis Presley, to Mick Jagger, Caetano Veloso, Chairman Mao, Jorge Ben, Jimi Hendrix, and Andy Warhol – and a set whose sound definitely seems to live up to such heady company from the 20th century! Erasmo Carlos is at his inventive best here – very playfully creative, yet in a way that refines his style from his trippier years – almost a reinvention of the singer's approach for a new generation of MPB – in a manner that some of the Tropicalia artists were doing at the time. The songwriting and production are great – and if the album were in English, it may well have been a global hit (although it did pretty well at home back in Brazil!) – and titles include "Mane Joao", "Largo Da Segunda Feira", "Sabado Morto", "E Proibido Fumar", "Preciso Encontrar Um Amigo", and "Mundo Cao". One of Dexter Gordon's proudest moments of the 50s – a rock-solid session for Bethlehem – easily one of the best-remembered hardbop sides from the label's California years! The album's got a relaxed, free-blown sound that's quite nice – with Dex in the lead on tenor, supported by the trio of Kenny Drew on piano, Leroy Vinnegar on bass, and Lawrence Marable on drums. Gordon's perhaps not as fully imaginative as he would become in the 60s, but his sound and control is still great throughout – and the rhythm section really helps knock this one out of the park. Definite spontaneous sounds from the great Albert Mangelsdorff – a set that has the trombonist working alongside the up-and-coming Japanese pianist Masahiko Sato, who also plays some ring modulator on the album! Sato's almost the driving force here – although that role might also go to drummer Allen Blairman, a player we don't know much at all, but who really pushes the group strongly forward from the bottom – as Sato serves up some of his most angular, inventive lines to date – and bassist Peter Warren shifts from bow to plucking, depending on the sonic needs of the moment. Mangelsdorff is great, as always – and as always, really knows how to step back when needed, then jump into the fray in just the right way. A bigger step into a piano led jazzy style from Allen Toussaint – grooving in a timeless Crescent City influenced sound – a wonderful record, one we'll go back to for years to come! Allen's been a huge part of the New Orleans musical landscape for many, many years, and it's not a stretch to imagine he's had the laidback, but evocative jazz of the territory in his blood for just as long – so it's a wonder that he hasn't made a record like this before now. There's nothing cliche or cheesy in Allen's work here, which has kind of an after hours vibe that suits it well, and he's put together an outstanding group of players. There's maybe a touch of the blues here – but the results, as usual for Mal Waldron, are completely different overall – which makes for a really magical moment from a time that was a real creative high point in Waldron's career! All tracks are long originals by Mal – played with a trio that features Allen Blairman on drums and Jimmy Woode on some especially strong bass – very different than most of his other work of the time, and really colored by the moodier colors of the Waldron palette – often played with a pointed, succinct quality that even beats his contributions to the Clarke Boland Big Band. The music leans outside, but is never as totally free as some of Waldron's more improvised recordings – and titles include the 17 minute "A Touch Of The Blues", plus "The Search" and "Here There & Everywhere". ✨✧ Romano MussoliniLatin Taste ... LP
Schema (Italy), 1997. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A great groover from Italian pianist Romano Mussolini – a really cool little session that features some key instrumental elements joining his core trio sound! Romano's at the helm on acoustic piano, with support on bass and drums – but the set also features guest guitar, tenor, and added percussion – all of which expand the sound out nicely! There's bits of bossa and Latin jazz percolating throughout the first side of the record – making for a nice change from the usual Mussolini groove – and side two uses the same elements to move into more boppish territory overall, but still with an upbeat and swinging style. Romano's keyboard work is as fluid as ever – and titles include "Versiliana Samba", "Meditation", "Thomas Blues", "Drop Me Off At Harlem", "Confirmation", and "Perdido". LP, Vinyl record album

Columbia/Get On Down, 1996. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... Out Of Stock
The second album, and even if it's not as dope as as the mythical Illmatic, but how could anyone hope to live up to those expectations? The Trakmasters come up with some nice beats, chided for being a bit on the commercial side by critics at the time, but they've aged a lot better than most street rap chart fodder at the time. Lyrically Nas is still on point, and going back to this record, especially considering a few of the ones he's dropped since, it wears well with the test of time. Includes "Street Dreams", "If I Ruled The World", "Affirmative Action" and "Black Girl Lost" and more. LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Mal WaldronHard Talk ... CD
Enja/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1974. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Hard talk, and lots of heavy sounds from the great Mal Waldron – heard here in a set that may well be one of his greatest moments of the 70s! The album's a key illustration of Waldron's power on the European scene of the time – and it's noteworthy not just for Mal's bold vision as a leader, but also for key contributions from Steve Lacy on soprano sax and Manfred Schoof on trumpet! Both artists really bring a lot to Waldron's music – filling up the long tracks with voices that are as powerful and righteous as the leader's own – spurred on by some great rhythm work from Isla Eckinger on bass and Allen Blairman on drums. Recorded live, with a great sense of energy – and titles include "Snake Out", "Hard Talk", "Russian Melody", and "Hurray For Herbie". CD

✨✧ VariousBrazil USA 70 – Brazilian Music In The USA In The 1970s ... CD
Soul Jazz (UK), Early 70s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Fantastic grooves from the 70s – tracks that are part of a great second wave of Brazilian music to hit our shores, then take off in a whole new direction! The US was no stranger to Brazilian sounds in the 60s – given the popularity of bossa nova and a few other styles – but as the 70s approached, a new generation of artists started to hit the American scene – often with richer, more sophisticated ideas that built on older bossa and samba modes, then combined them with new approaches to jazz, funk, and soul! This killer set presents a perfect portrait of that time – mixing familiar names with newcomers, or Brazilian recording artists with American studio talents – all in a batch of cuts that still stand as some of our favorite Brazilian grooves of all time – even if they didn't come from Rio or Sao Paulo. Titles include "Bahia Soul" by Luiz Bonfa, "Catavento" by Milton Nascimento, "Ain't No Sunshine" by Sivuca, "Braun Blek Blu" by Dom Um Romao, "Skyscrapers" by Deodato, "Sandalia Delia" by Duke Pearson with Flora Purim, "Samba De Flora" by Airto, "Consolacao" by Tamba 4, "Moon Dreams" by Flor Purim, "Andei" by Airto, "Almas Irmas" by Joao Donato, "Kathy" by Moacir Santos, "Tombo In 7/4" by Airto, "Rio Vermelho" by Milton Nascimento, and "Escravos De Jo" by Dom Um Romao. Heavenly Sweetness (France), 1960s/1970s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
The definitely got the title right on this one – because the set is filled with some of the most heavenly tracks from the legendary Ethiopiques series – that legendary run of compilations that was the first introduction for most of us to the amazing music of Ethiopia! This package really zeros in on all the best bits – and has a special focus on the early 70s, with some other bits from the 60s as well – all the wonderful vintage material that captures that special time in Ethiopian music when the artists were really taking some new chances with their sound – and creating an otherworldly blend of jazz and funk with more local elements as well. The range of artists is great – a really compelling blend of singers and instrumentalists, not just a handful of tracks by Mulatu – and titles include "Presentiment" by Tsegue Maryam Guebrou, "Ene Negn Bay Manesh" by Girma Beyene, "Hedetch Alu" by Muluquen Mellesse, "Lantchi Biye" by Tlahoun Gessesse, "Tchereqa" by Menelik Wesnatchew, "Ashasha Beyew" by Abbebe Tessemma, "Ati Fettun Isani Infedhani" by Ali Birra, "Mela Mela" by Seyfou Yohannes, "Teredjew Neber" by Ayalew Mesfin, and "Hametegnaw" by Seyoum Gebreyes. Buda/Heavenly Sweetness (France), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Mad music that's unlike anything else we can think of – a killer collection of funky grooves from the Ethiopian scene of the 70s – offered up here on a vinyl-only compilation! The set's a great one if you've heard the music of Mulatu, but want to dig a lot deeper – as the cats included on this set are most of his contemporaries from the golden years of Ethiopian music – and most of them work in a similar offbeat, other-worldly sort of style! Rhythms are skittish, horns are hypnotic, and the vocals on some of the tracks have a weird appeal that really transcends the boundaries of language – almost like another instrumental element that fits in wonderfully with the heavy grooves underneath. Titles on the collection are pulled from various volumes of the Ethiopiques series – making this set kind of a distillation of all its greatness. Tracks include "Yebeqagnal" and "Ene Negn Bay Manesh" by Girma Beyene, "Queresh Endewaza" by Samuel Belay, "Ewnetegna Feqer" by Hirut Bequele, "Lomiwen Teqebeletch" by Mahmoud Ahmed, "Gedamay" by Getatchew Mekurya, and "Metche New" by Asselefetch Ashine & Getenesh Kebret. ✨✧ VariousNew Jazz Festival Balver Hohle – New Jazz 1976 & 1977 (8CD set) ... CD
Be! (Germany), 1976/1977. New Copy 8CD ... Out Of Stock
A heck of a collection – and one that really gets at the amazing array of free-thinking jazz that was brewing up on the European scene during the 70s! The set brings together over eight hours of music recorded during two years of this legendary festival – and each new disc has some great surprises along the way! There's some possibly more familiar material here – such as long improvisations that include a solo piano performance by Joachim Kuhn, two by a Mal Waldron trio with Jimmy Woode on bass and Allen Blairman on drums, one by a trio headed by pianist Yosuke Yamashita and with Akira Sakata on alto, two more by the duo of Peter Brotzmann on tenor and Han Bennink on drums, and a final two long improvisations by a great Archie Shepp gruop with Richard Greenlee on trombone, Dave Burell on piano, Cameron Brown on bass, and Beaver Harris on drums! Yet that's only the tip of the iceberg – as there's a full CD of music by a group led by Hugo Heredia on saxes and flute – with Horace Parlan on piano, Dodo Goys on bass, Tullio D'Piscopo on drums, and Mandrake Ivanir Do Nascimento on percussion. And there's another CD that features an hour-long improvisation by a version of the Willem Breuker Kollektief with Leo Cuypers on piano, Maarten Van Norden on tenor, Boy Raaymakers on trumpet, and Bernhard Hunnekink and Willem Van Manen on trombones. There's also a very long track by a cool quartet headed by Polish alto giant Zbigniew Namyslowski – and one more by the French Machi Oul Big Band. There's also tracks by Riot, with Uli Beckerhoff on trumpet; Grumpff with Michael Schlaper on tenor and soprano, and Ekkehard Jost on baritone; Mumps with Albert Mangelsdorff on trombone and John Surman on tenor; and the Eddie Prevost Quartet with Geoff Hawkins on tenor and Gerry Gold on trumpet. And last but not least are two long trcks by the Czech group Celula Jazz Crew – with Laco Deczi on trumpet, Karel Ruzicka on electric piano, and Svatopluc Kosvanec on trombone. Phew – that's a lot of music, and the whole thing comes in a very cool 10" box set, complete with a booklet of notes, too! CD

George Benson is no spring chicken – but damn, he sounds plenty darn youthful here – working at the Ronnie Scotts club in London with some tight jazz funk backing! Benson sings as much as solos on guitar – and the whole thing is a great throwback to the sound of his 70s records – both in terms of the choice of tunes, and the overall spirit – that undeniable charisma that pushed George from the soul jazz underground to superstardom – a quality that's never let up over the years. Titles include "The Ghetto", "Give Me The Night", "Love X Love", "Turn Your Love Around", "In Your Eyes", "Feel Like Makin Love", "Cruise Control", "Affirmation", "Moody's Mood", and "Don't Let Me Be Lonely Tonight". Folk soul guitar player, singer, songwriter, storyteller and genuine character Abner Jay's brilliant home recordings – the first release of his "terrible comedy blues" in far too long – courtesy of the always deep digging Mississippi label! Abner takes on the topical issues of the days with a skewed sensibility that's brilliant, and his singing, the performances and the recording quality aren't really as rough and raw as you might expect, though nowhere even close to manicured and clean sound – it's just right really for the material. Great stuff! Titles include "I'm So Depressed", "Cocaine", "Vietnam", "St James Infirmary Blues", "Cleo", "Woke Up This Morning", "Don't Mess With My Baby", "I'm Georgia Bound" and "The Reason Young People Use Drugs". But there's also some deeper elements here going on too – maybe more space for thoughtful presentation spread out over the 2LPs that comprised the original record – at a level that's only more confirmation of the never-ending genius of prince! Titles include the great title cut "Sign O The Times" – plus "Strange Relationship", "Slow Love", "It's Gonna Be A Beautiful Night", "Adore", "Ballad Of Dorothy Parker", "Housequake", "U Got The Look", "If I Was Your Girlfriend", "I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man", "The Cross", "Hot Thing", and "Starfish & Coffee". Analog Africa (Germany), 1970s/1980s/Early 90s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A mountain of music from the scene in Somalia during the 70s and 80s – all of it pulled from the vast archives of Radio Mogadishu, and showing a wonderful range of expression at the time! The music here is all pretty darn funky and soulful – as you'd expect from a collection on Analog Africa – but there's also some great criss-crossing of cultural elements taking place here, both in time and space – a shift in electric instrumentation from the 70s to the 80s, and an openness to other styles of rhythms too – even a bit of reggae and dub from time to time! Yet even when things are more straightly funky, they're never too straightforward – as the music bristles with all these unusual touches and sweet instrumental twists and turns – always keeping things interesting throughout. As always with the label, there's a fantastic set of notes – a big booklet that also recounts the struggle to reissue this music, with a fair bit of Somali history and culture too – all in support of titles that include "Daraadaa Muxibo" by Dur Dur Band, "Sirmaqabe" by Iftin Band, "Godonimada Jira" by Bakaka Band, "Ladaney" by Dur Dur Band, "Hoobeya" by Shimaali & Killer, "Baayo" by Mukhtar Ramadan Iidi, "Hab Isii" by Omar Shooli, "Waakaa Helaa" by F Qazzim & Shareero, "Il Ooy Aniga" by Ifitin Band, "Geesiyada Halgamayow" by Bakaka Band, and "Check Up Your Head" by Mukhtar Ramada Iidi. ✨✧ Joe HaiderCafe Des Pyrenees ... CD
Be! (Germany), Mid 70s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Beautiful work from Joe Haider – a lesser-known pianist on these shores, but an important force in the German scene – best remembered for some wonderful music on the Ego Records label! This set captures Joe in a very similar setting – working on both acoustic piano and Fender Rhodes – in a trio with Allen Blairman on drums, and the mighty Isla Eckinger on bass. If you don't know Eckinger, you're really in for a treat – as he's a tremendous talent who has this way of shaping notes and rhythms that are completely mesmerizing – even at mellow moments, when he seems to be working this really subtle magic on the proceedings – and giving the record a godlike soul you might not expect! The album's as much of a treasure for Eckinger's work as it is for Haider's piano lines – and the pair together are wonderful throughout – and Blairman knows how to step aside at all the right moments, and let the real magic come from the bass and piano. Titles include "Tante Nelly", "Seasons", "My Daddy Is Home", "Muchacha", "Kollektiv", and "Why I Can Not Be Like I Be". CD

✨✧ Karl Hector & The MalcounsUnstraight Ahead ... CD
Now Again, 2014. New Copy Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
The album that may well have forever put Miki Howard on the map – and a great match of her old school vocals with some of the more contemporary soul modes that were bubbling big at the time! Beats are used a bit more strongly than before – never too much, or in a way that's clunkily chartbound – but maybe with that same sort of bottom-up push that worked so well for Sybil, and which is balanced out by Howard with some warmer, mellower moments that keep her strongly in the classic soul firmament! Maria Joao is one of the most unique vocal talents in jazz – a singer who's partly inspired by the new freedoms of the more experimental female jazz vocalists of the 70s, but one who also draws a lot from the hippest Brazilian singers too! There's an approach here that mixes together Sheila Jordan with Joyce, Nana Caymmi with Karin Krog – but all at a level that also explodes with new imagination too, especially when paired with the very dynamic piano of Aki Takase! The set's got plenty of sharp edges and vocal/piano experiments, but also never fails to find a way to swing – on titles that include "Mae Dou Iho Nao", "My Favorite Things", "Estranha Forma De Vida", "Watashi No Obakasan", "Don't Shout At Me/Amanojaku", and "Confirmation/Donna Lee/Au Privave".
