Human Instinct/Four FoursHuman Instinct & Four Fours 1963 to 1968 ... CD
RPM (UK), Mid 60s. New Copy ... $12.99
A great journey in sound – one undertaken by a New Zealand group who spent the second half of the 60s with a new name, and recording in London too! The combo first started out as The Four Fours in the southern hemisphere – a raw group with a sound that was maybe a bit influenced by the Brit Invasion era, but often carried off with a grittier, garagier vibe – one that offsets the more melodic moments with a nice sort of edge, and really keeps things interesting as the set unfolds through more than a dozen of the group's New Zealand singles for the Allied and Zodiac labels! The set then features later work by The Human Instinct – the new name for the group as they hit the British scene, where they recorded with a bit more psych in the mix – on singles here that were issued by Mercury and Deram. Later Human Instinct material has been reissued, but this is the first time the early side of their career has gotten its full due – on titles that include "Stingray", "From The Bottom Of My Heart", "Theme From An Empty Coffee Lounge", "Barrow Boy", "Jungle Cat, "It's Gonna Rain", "Time Slips Away", "One Track Mind", and "Don't Print My Memoirs" by The Four Fours – plus "A Day In My Mind's Mind", "Renaissance Fair", "Can't Stop Around", "Rich Man", "Pink Dawn", "Death Of The Seaside", and "Want To Be Loved By You" by The Human Instinct. SequelMotorized Instinct ... CD
Sonar Kollektiv (Germany), 2004. Used ... $3.99
A real groover from Sequel – another nice little two man factory of soulful house and broken beat electrofunk for the Sonar Kollectiv label! Everything is pretty much dancefloor oriented on the full length, but there are lots of little curve balls thrown throughout to keep it interesting! One of the finer aspects is the breadth of guest vocalists. Brazilian jazz singer Jenny Chi lights up the opener "Solidad", and Guillermo Soria smooths out the late model disco of "Neptune, Moon and Mars". Other nice ones include "I've Been Waiting" featuring Jimmy Williams, and the sorta folksy Gabriella Krapf on "I Can't Say No". Other tracks include "Disease", "Solutions", "Melt", "In-Flux", "Disorder" and more! CD

✨✧ Gerrit Hatcher/Katie Ernst/Ben Lamar Gay/Keefe Jackson/Julian KirshnerGood Instinct Of The Morning ... CD
Kettle Hole, 2020. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A beautifully burning set from this contemporary Chicago group – one who are clearly playing in an improvised mode, but who really seem to have a strong feel for the overall sound of their music together, rather than individual moments of their own! There are often many passages where the players come together, almost as one – evoking some of the cohesive elements of the ESP generation, while also creating more of a youthful, contemporary spirit too – one that's carved out of the tenor of Gerrit Hatcher, the cornet of Ben Lamar Gay, the tenor of Keefe Jackson, bass of Katie Ernst, and drums of Julian Kirshner. Titles include "Other Fires", "Shoaling", "For Protection", and a take on Charles Tyler's "Man Alone". CD

FallRoom To Live – Undilutable Slang Truth! (2LP pressing with bonus tracks – marble vinyl pressing) ... LP
Kamera/Cherry Red (UK), 1982. New Copy (reissue)... $34.99
The greatest album ever by the Fall? We're always tempted to say so – because there's something here so perfect, so focused, it's hard to think of a better album to illustrate the genius of Mark E Smith! The rhythms are weirder, the lyrics more poetic, and the guitars a bit more razor sharp than before – yet the record's also not going as easily for the catchy hooks and clever turns of phrase that would take a bit of steam out of the whole Fall sound in years to come. Darkness, but delivered with a smirk – and a record that still brings us limitless joy today! Titles include "Joker Hysterical Face", "Hard Life In The Country", "Marquis Cha Cha", "Room To Live", "Papal Visit", and "Solicitor In Studio". 2LP version also features bonus material – live tracks recorded in 1982 and 1983, with versions of "Room To Live", "Words Of Expectation", "Hard Life In The Country", "Joker Hysterical Face", "Town Called Crappy/Solicitor In The Studio", and "Detective Instinct". ✨✧ Tribe Called QuestPeople's Instinctive Travels & The Paths Of Rhythm ... CD
Jive, 1989. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of THE landmark hip hop albums – and the full length debut of great Tribe Called Quest! We hardly need to tell you about this classic – but it will always bear repeating. De La Soul might have kicked the door open on leftfield, anything goes artistry about a year or so earlier, but their friends and fellow Native Tongues Tribe's debut was a crucial reminder that the east coast was spinning out of one of the greatest creative growth spurts in hip hop history at the time. Pure excellence. Tracks include "Luck Of Lucien", "Footprints", "I Left My Wallet In El Segundo", "Bonita Applebaum", "Can I Kick It?", "Rhythm (Devoted To The Art Of Moving Butts)", "Mr Muhammad", "Description Of A Fool" andmore seminal, jazzy middle school tracks!
