✨✧ Jim McNeelyPlot Thickens (Muse) ... LP
Muse, 1979. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A record of angular lines and subtle sounds from pianist Jim McNeely – an overlooked talent from this generation, and a player with a great sensitivity for unusual colors and tones! The record's a fair bit different than other Muse dates – played almost with the freedom of some of the more inventive European piano sessions of the late 70s – never outside, but always pushing the boundaries in very exploratory ways. The lineup varies a bit on the set – as a few tracks feature John Scofield on guitar, but the rest are trio numbers with either Jon Burr or Mike Richmond on bass, and Billy Hart on drums. Titles include "The Plot Thickens", "Inner Ear", "Burgundy & The Virgin Snow", and "The Light At The End Of The Cave". LP, Vinyl record album
(White label promo. Cover has some ringwear, light aging, and a promo stamp in back.)

✨✧ Nathen PagePage-ing Nathen ... LP
Hugo's Music, 1982. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Nathan Page was one of the more obscure players of the east coast soul jazz underground that surfaced often on labels like Strata East and Muse during the 70s – and although he made few albums as a leader, he's a pretty strong single-note guitar player with a good range of styles! This 1982 album has him playing with Buster Williams, Billy Hart, and Kenny Barron – and the sound's a mix of straight soul jazz tunes, plus others that have a slicker, more-produced sound. Includes a version of Joe Henderson's "Inner Urge", plus the originals "Sunday Morning Samba", "Reba", and "Gypsy". LP, Vinyl record album
(Original pressing! Cover has very light wear on the top seam, but this is quite a nice copy.)

✨✧ Woody ShawWoody III ... LP
Columbia, 1979. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A perfect summation of the Woody Shaw genius in the 70s – bold, righteous jazz – delivered with a soaring, joyous message that's impossible to deny! By the time of this release, Shaw had matured to a point where he was easily one of the most important voices on the trumpet in his generation – a 70s player who pulled together strands of the previous generation – from Coltrane to Lee Morgan to Larry Young – all wrapped up in amazing music like this! The set's a major label date, but it's got a righteous power to rival the best indie label sessions from companies like Strata East or Muse – and the lineup features other key spiritual players of Shaw's generation – including Carter Jefferson on tenor, James Spaulding on alto and flute, Rene McLean on alto, Onaje Allen Gumbs on piano, Steve Turre on trumpet, Buster Williams on bass, and Victor Lewis on drums. Titles include the sublime "Woody III" suite, plus "Escape Velocity", "Organ Grinder", and "To Kill A Brick". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Rotary ConnectionDinner Music ... LP
Cadet, 1969. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Beautiful spacey soul and righteous rock/soul grooves from one of the most enigmatic groups ever to come out of the Chicago soul scene! The drummer really kicks it on this one – and more than a few cuts have a nice backbeat to them, and the record probably has a bit more of a rock feel than some of the group's other work. But that doesn't stop this one from still being completely wonderful – and Minnie Riperton gives up some of the best vocals of her young career, set to airy spacey production by the great Charles Stepney. Tracks include "Love Me Now", "Merry Prankster", "Lonely Summer", "Amuse", "Want You To Know", "Country Things", "Living Alone", and "We Will Be Free". LP, Vinyl record album
(Original pressing! Vinyl is nice and clean – cover has light wear and a light name stamp. Cover and label have a small cutout mark.)

✨✧ Led ZeppelinPhysical Graffiti ... LP
Swan Song/Atlantic, 1975. Very Good+ 2LP ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Led Zeppelin at their most sprawling – in both ambition and in the pacing – on the gargantuan Physical Graffiti! This is the album where they started bringing some odd synth textures to the sound, and it's to Zeppelin's eternal credit that this doesn't compromise their blues-reverent hard rock one bit! There's no better Zeppelin album when it comes to giving the fans what they want, while chasing the band's adventurous muses at the same time. Includes the classics "Kashmir", "Custard Pie", "Houses Of The Holy", "In The Light", "Ten Years Gone", "Boogie With Stu", "Sick Again" and more. LP, Vinyl record album
(In the die-cut cover with heavy inner sleeves and window insert. Cover has some edge wear.)

✨✧ Tom HarrellTotal! (aka Aurora) ... LP
Pinnacle, 1976. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A killer early groover from trumpeter Tom Harrell – proof that he was a killer right from the get-go! The album's got some sweet funky cuts with a warm soulful sound – kind of halfway between Freddie Hubbard on CTI, and some of the more organic sounds on Muse in the 70s – handled by a group that includes Tom on trumpet, Bob Berg on tenor, Barry Finnerty on guitar, Mike Wolff on electric piano, Lenny White on drums, and Muhammad Abdullah on lots of cool percussion! Titles include "While There's Time", "The Water's Edge", "On The Roof", "Aurora", and "Outdoor Cafe". LP, Vinyl record album
(Mid 80s issue. Cover has a faint sticker spot and a light crimp from manufacturing at the top right.)

✨✧ Cocteau TwinsPink Opaque ... LP
4AD/Relativity, 1980s. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A well-remembered set from The Cocteau Twins' sublime 80s run on the 4AD label – a set that was one of the duo's first American titles, culled together from some of their early singles and import EP releases! The song choices are wonderful – some of the most focused, expressive cuts from the first few Cocteau years – magical moments that have the wordless vocals of Liz Frazier carving out these really beautiful melodies – while lush keyboards and splashy rhythms fill in the background with that unique 4AD style of production. There's still never been anything like the group at this point over all the years that have past – and the album's filled with gems that include "Wax & Wane", "Pearly Dewdrop Drops", "From The Flagstones", "Lorelei", "Aikea Guinea", "Pepper Tree", and "Musette & Drums". ✨✧ Larry CoryellEquipoise ... CD
Muse, 1985. Used ... Out Of Stock
Plenty of poise here – a lot more restraint than before for guitarist Larry Coryell, but still plenty of soul as well! The rhythm section is a key element of the set – as it features Stanley Cowell on piano, Buster Williams on bass, and Billy Hart on drums – all working in different modes than the 70s, but still with enough spirit to really deepen the album underneath Coryell's slightly thinner work on guitar. The highlight of the set is the title track "Equipoise" – a beautifully sensitive re-reading of Cowell's classic composition – and other titles include "Joy Spring", "Christina", "First Things First", and "Tender Tears" – plus "Unemployed Floyd", which also features a bit of flute work from Pamela Sklar. ✨✧ Lalo SchifrinRollercoaster ... LP
MCA, 1977. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Written for a strange action film that starred George Segal, Henry Fonda, and Richard Widmark, set in an amusement park – and, not surprisingly, about half the tunes have a carnival or circus type theme to them, with lots of instrumentation that's played in the mode of a calliope. The best cuts, though, have a tight Schifrin action groove to them – done in the manner of some of his slicker late 70s work, with plenty of uptempo rhythms and driving themes. Tracks include "Rollercoaster", "Apple Turnover", "One Track Mind", "Portrait Of Harry", "Magic Carousel", "Children's Ride", and "Another Side Of Harry". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Putter SmithHome ... CD
Skipper Productions, 2011. Used ... Out Of Stock
Tremendous material from bassist Putter Smith – a player you may not recognize, but one who's been making some beautiful music on the LA scene for decades! Putter's got a soulful, soaring vision that makes him a perfect choice for Henry Franklin's Skipper label – and like Franklin's recent gems on that imprint, there's a quality here that takes us right back to the best indie soul jazz of the 70s – richly expressive material from a post-Coltrane era – with a vibe that's somewhere between Clifford Jordan on Strata East, and some of the hipper albums on Muse Records from the decade. Putter plays bass, but really manages to get some great horn help here, too – the alto of Jon Whinnery and tenor of John Gross – beautifully intertwined, and stepping along the modally-influenced rhythms of the set – which are played by Smith on bass, Theo Saunders on piano, and Kendall Kay on drums. The album's got an understated cover, but a wonderfully rich sound – and it's one we've been spinning often at the Dusty Groove offices of late! Titles include "Larance", "Home", "Early Morning Mood", "For Us", "Love Song For Kirsi", "Tonggeret", and "The Blessing". CD

✨✧ Cedar Walton - Hank Hobley QuintetBreakthrough ... CD
Muse/Savoy, 1972. Used ... Out Of Stock
One of the last great albums that Hank Mobley ever cut! Although Mobley's 70s output was nothing compared to his 60s Blue Note work, this 1972 session for Cobblestone/Muse is a winner, and features the aging tenorist co-leading a crack quintet with Cedar Walton, and featuring Billy Higgins, Sam Jones, and Charles Davis. The set's freer than Mobley's Blue Note work, but the group's right on the money – and the record is dominated by fierce soulful solos. Walton plays both acoustic and electric piano, at times, the record feels as if it might have been issued on the Black Jazz label. Tracks include "Sabia", "Breakthrough", "Early Morning Stroll", and the beautiful "House On Maple Street". CD
