Bill Cosby introduces this hip little live set from the John Mayall group – which is fitting, as there's definitely a bit of an LA groove on the set! Mayall's still in very bluesy territory, but he also gets some great soul jazz support too – from players who include Charles Owens on flute and soprano sax, Ernie Watts on tenor, and even the great Fred Jackson on baritone! Keef Hartley adds in some mighty heavy drums, but the group's further expanded by even more American players too – including Blue Mitchell on trumpet and Freddie Robinson on guitar – both players who definitely leave their mark on the set. Tanya Blount's got a great way with a mellower, more laidback version of 90s R&B – that kind of slow-kicking groove that still has beats, but used in a spacious style to slowly percolate the background – while Tanya soars right out front with a really wonderful reach in her vocal range! The style's not unique for the time, but Blount really serves it up better than most – making her debut sparkle all the way through, on tracks that include "Is It Love", "Through The Rain", "I'm Gonna Make You Mine", "Love Ballad", "Spend Another Night", "Hold On", and "For All The Right Reasons". One of the lesser-known albums from the mid 70's, and one that includes a mix of remakes of old stuff, and some faster tracks that seem to be aimed at the dancefloor. Dave Matthews arranged a number of tracks, including "Hot", "So Long", and "(I Love You) For Sentimental Reasons". Early 80s funky soul from Zoom! Saturday, Saturday Night is crafted to be a good natured, party starting set – and it succeeds with charm to spare. It's a mix of uptempo club cuts and mellow modern soul ones with excellent harmonies by the group, and some nice hooks in all the right places!
