A set that features music from three different sessions recorded by trumpeter Bill Dixon in the mid 60s – all pretty groundbreaking work, even all these many years later! First up is a quartet co-led by Archie Shepp and Bill Dixon – easily one of the greatest modern jazz pairings of the 60s! If you only know Shepp from his later work, you'll hear something very different here – as his tenor's often brought into tight focus with the trumpet of Dixon – in a blend of arrangement and freedom that's like that of Ted Curson and Bill Barron, but a lot more powerful overall! The tunes still have a sense of structure – and get great help from the bass of Don Moore and drums of Paul Cohen – but there's also some tremendously unbridled energy from the leaders, especially Dixon, who might not have sounded this great ever again. Next up is one side of an album that Dixon split with Shepp for Savoy – and Dixon's material here features a septet, with a great lineup that includes Ken McIntyre on alto and oboe, George Barrow on tenor, and both Hal Dodson and David Izenzon on basses. We don't know what they were putting in the water in Boston during the 50's, but whatever it was, it sure made Bostonians play great jazz – especially all the white guys who picked up alto saxophones. Charlie Mariano was one of those guys, and from the start, his playing on the alto had a brilliant tone that lay somewhere between the iciness of Lee Konitz and the more soulful sound of Art Pepper. Mariano was always completely in his own bag, though, and as you'll hear on this early set of recordings with a young Jaki Byard, he was always open to modernist influences, but (like Byard) never let them get in the way of a soulful solo. We're not sure who these tracks were originally recorded for, but there's 16 of them, and they're all studio material with a hard lively sound. Despite any prejudice you might have against Maynard Ferguson, he actually does a damn good job backing up Chris Connor's lovely voice on this record – probably because his band is super-hip, and includes players like Jaki Byard, Joe Farrell, and Rufus Jones. Connor is in fine icy form, as usual – and it's nice to hear her get a bit more jazzy backing than some of the more somber arrangements you'll hear on her Atlantic sessions. A treasure trove of bluesy rock material – and a set that almost works as well as a straight album project from Nick Gravenites and Mike Bloomfield – as it does as the soundtrack for this offbeat film that starred Jane Fonda and Donald Sutherland! The vibe here is a bit like other rock/blues indie soundtracks of the time – such as Heavy Traffic or Fritz The Cat but Gravenites and Bloomfield are also nicely focused, too – and most numbers stand very strongly on their own, not just as scene-setters for the movie. Nice 2-in-1 set that reissues 2 hard to find albums by Roland Kirk! Kirk's Work is a strange and tasty album that Kirk made with organist Jack McDuff in the early 60s. The album's also been issued under the title Funk Underneath – but this is the original version. Kirk's tenor, manzello, stritch, and flute sound great next to Brother Jack's organ, and his sense of humor matches that of the great keyboardist. They swing hard, and have a lot of fun, especially on tracks like "Kirk's Work", "Three for Dizzy", and "Doin' the Sixty-Eight". The second album was cut under Jaki Byard's name – and is an amazing (and often forgotten) quartet session that brings together the enigmatic pianist and the mind-blowing multi-reed player. Kirk and Byard had played together previously, most notably on some of Kirk's Mercury recordings, and they fit together perfectly in this mad session of off-kilter jazz. The two of them are backed by Alan Dawson on drums and Richard Davis on bass, and the group's as tight as a drum. Forget the hokey cover and title, because this set is one of Harold Mabern's best of the 90s – delivered with that subtle soulfulness that's always made us love his piano work so much! There's a beautifully stripped-down sense of lyricism to the set – as Mabern's work on keys dances around full bass work from Christian McBride, plus some nicely economical drums from Tony Reedus – whose playing here is gentle enough that it's almost letting the bass drive the groove of the set. Mabern follows suit by exploring the deeper ranges of the piano with effortless creativity – stretching out especially well on the album's versions of older jazz standards like "Ladybird", "Jeannine", "Grooveyard", and "Minority" – as well as his own composition "Aon". Two rare albums from one of the greatest modern pianists ever! Jaki Byard With Strings is a wonderful album – and nothing like any other "with strings" album you've ever heard! Sure, the set does have some stringed instruments in the group – but it's a small combo session with bass, violin, guitar, and cello, not a large overly-orchestral affair. Byard's mad vision uses these strings wonderfully to carve out some oddly arranged tunes that mix together soul jazz grooving and a haunting spiritual approach to jazz that points at later work on labels like Strata East. Includes a sublime remake of "Music To Watch Girls By", "Falling Rains Of Life", "Cat's Cradle Conference Rag", and a long version of "How High The Moon". Solo Piano is an obscure set from 1969, featuring Byard's lonely musings on the keyboard on shorter tracks that reference a huge history of traditions. Titles include "Seasons", "Spanish Tinge 2", "Hollis Stomp", "Top Of The Gate Rag", and "Ray's Blues". CD

A warm and soulful set of fusion tracks – issued only in Japan, but recorded by a hip group from the US! Air Pocket features the Fowler Brothers – Walt, Bruce, Ed, and Steve – on trumpet, trombone, bass, and alto, respectively – plus drummer Chester Thompson, guitarist Mike Miller, and pianist Stu Goldberg, who really plays some great moog, clavinet, and electric keys on the set! Tunes are well-written – a bit choppy, but never too jamming, and really just done in this nice blocky way that creates a slightly funky approach, and a good degree of soul. Titles include "Elephant's Graveyard", "Hi Lo Redic", "Colors For Marvin", "Night's Move", and "Becky". CD

Keyboardist Julius Brockington really takes off here – in a style that's not quite funk, not quite jazz – and which has some of the unique sophisticated changes that Gene Harris was bringing to his Blue Note records in the mid 70s! Like Gene, Julius already has a strong background on the keys – and here, he's able to open up and create all sorts of new rhythms in his music – working on organ, piano, and even a bit of Arp – in a combo that features Steve Turner on alto and flute, Jim Wilson on trumpet, and Garry Langston on guitar! The vibe is great – sophisticated, but funky too – and very unusual compared to other albums of the time. All the material is original – and titles include "Gettin' Into It", "Lost Tribe", "Jaded Jackie", and "In the Back of the Churchyard". CD
