Black IceBlack Ice ... CD
HDM, Late 70s. New Copy ... $6.99 15.98
A heavy groover from Black Ice – an old school harmony act at the core, but working here in a sweet clubby mode for the 70s! The approach is quite similar to the best group soul coming from Philly at the time – with some wicked upbeat numbers that step along beautifully – not Sigma-bred, but with a similar blend of tight rhythms on the bottom, soaring strings on the top, and funky instrumentation in the middle – more than enough to really get the vocal interplay going between the group's five members! Arrangements are by Ray Jackson – and the set also features a few nice mellower numbers to round out the sound – including the great stepper "The Wine Is Bitter (But The Grapes Are Sweet)" – alongside other tracks that include "Shakedown", "Blind Over You", "Touch", "Girl That's What I Call Love", "I Want You Back", and "Making Love In The Rain". ✨✧ Black IceI Judge The Funk ... CD
Transcontinent/Traffic, 1979. New Copy ... $6.99 15.98
A lost bit of ensemble funk from the end of the 70s – served up in a mix of bass-heavy club and boogie styles! The group have a rolling groove that's a bit like some of the work by Instant Funk or other clubby funk acts – but the overall feel is a bit tighter and more small group-oriented, even though the end result is as tight and professional as anything coming out on some of the bigger labels at the time – making for a great mix of indie and mainstream funky club styles! Our favorite cuts may actually be the mellower ones – which have some great soul harmonies – but even the uptempo tracks are pretty nice, with a strong Philly-inspired sound overall – and titles include "Postcard Love Affair", "My Fantasy", "Push", "There You Go", "Fantasize", "I Judge The Funk", and "You're Always on My Mind". Ice CubeLethal Injection ... LP
Priority, 1993. New Copy (reissue)... $24.99 29.99
A sharp, angry salvo from Ice Cube! Cube's early 90s solo style was firmly established at this point, so Lethal Injection doesn't have the acknowledged classic status of his previous couple albums, but he's still close to his prime that it's well worth your dollar! As you'd guess from the title, he's still pretty angry – the reasons for that permanent scowl he wore at the time are all over the place, as is the firm Lench Mob production. Tracks include "Really Doe", "Ghetto Bird", "Bop Gun (One Nation)" featuring George Clinton, "What Can I Do?", "Make It Ruff, Make It Smooth" featuring K-Dee, "Down For Whatever", "Enemy", "When I Get To Heaven", and more. Fresh/Traffic, 1990. New Copy ... $7.99 15.98
A later set by Just Ice – produced by Grandmaster Flash – and record that sounds a lot better than we remembered! Tight, hard hitting dawn of the 90s beats from Flash and that gruff, tight rhyme delivery from Just-Ice. It might not be a masterpiece on par with Kool & Deadly, but it's plenty tough to our ears after all these years. Includes "Get Into Something", "The Iceman Cometh", "Slow, Low & Dope", "Rollin With The Just", and "I Write This In The Dark" with Angie B of The Sequence, known today as Angie Stone! CD

✨✧ Black IceBlack Ice (Montage) ... CD
Montage, 1982. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
That's almost a hip hop cover on the front – one that would be years ahead of its time – but the record's a great batch of soul from this overlooked group! There's a tightness here that goes way beyond the previous album from Black Ice – a really top-shelf delivery all the way through – of the sort you'd expect to hear from a much bigger act at the time. The album's divided into two sides – a "lover's side" and a "dancer's side" – the latter of which features the band grooving in kind of an 80s club mode, with lots of bass pedals and a smooth funky sound that's not too bad. The real strength, though, is the lover's side – which is sort of an update of the 70s east coast harmony sound, given a smooth modern soul twist, but still retaining the best part of the vocal style, especially on the midtempo cuts. Titles include "I Just Wanna Hold You", "This Time", "Never Knew Love", "Big Fun", and the ode to designer jeans, "Sergios (I Want To Be With You)". CD

Priority, 1991. New Copy (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Cube's anger goes full throttle on his second post NWA full-length. He takes every aspect of his social commentator standpoints to another level from his solo debut – the roles of the angry and educated leader, and the finger-pointing blamer each get their say here, and so do those furiously funky Lench Mob beats. One of the last great gangsta era records to be so propulsive and exciting – Dre's Chronic was waiting just around the corner to haze this sound out of the picture for good. Quite tough to find on wax in it's original pressing – and the titles include include "Givin Up The Nappy Dug Out", "The Funeral", "Wrong Ni**a To –- Wit", "My Summer Vacation", and "Steady Mobbin". Sire/Music On Vinyl (Netherlands), 1989. New Copy (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Ice T's third album, and a set that still has all the nicely biting style of his early best! The approach here is great – as political as the cover implies, but with a nice sense of wit, too – that quality that already made Ice stand so far apart from others who were getting mired down in their hardass stance – but without also ever sounding too flip about the subject matter. The balance is what soon brought him to Hollywood, but it's always got a lot more edge on record – served up here with superb production and beats from Afrika Islam. Titles include "You Played Yourself", "The Girl Tried To Kill Me", "Freedom Of Speech", "What Ya Wanna Do", "Hit The Deck", "Peel Their Caps Back", "Shut Up Be Happy", "Lethal Weapon", and "The Hunted Child". Kedzie, 1974. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A really great chapter in the long and funky history of the musicians that also played in Lafayette Afro Rock Band and Cane & Abel – and a cool little set that may be one of the best records to ever come from the collective! The players work here as Ice – and come across like some of the best American funk collectives of the time – a group that's heavy on wah wah guitar over Fender Rhodes riffs, but which also features lots of searing solos in the middle – an instrumental intensity that sometimes dominates more than the vocals! A few gentler groovers are mighty nice too – served up with warm vocals that bubble along with the rhythms – and at a few spots, you'll even hear the trademark "magic bag" sound of the Lafayette Afro Rock Band. Titles include "Too Little Room", "Suicide", "One Chance", "Love Can", "There's Time To Change", "Dgunji", and "Put An X On The Spot". Also issued in the US under the title Ice. Shirley BrownFire & Ice ... LP
Malaco, 1989. Near Mint- ... $4.99
A great later set from Shirley Brown – an artist you might know best for her Stax work of the 70s, but who sounds wonderful here in a completely different mode! The album was done for Malaco at the end of the 80s, but it's got a vibe that's much more contemporary R&B than some of the label's other offerings – less bluesy soul, and more this cool, classy approach to soul music that really offers a new showcase for Shirley's great vocals. A number of tracks have a sweet new jack groove – which works surprisingly well for Brown – and titles include "King Size Love", "Silent Treatment", "What Cha Gonna Do When The Money Runs Out", "Tell Me Something Good", "Take Me To Your Heart", and "Anticipation". Jerry ButlerIce Man Cometh ... CD
Mercury/Intermusic (Spain), 1968. New Copy ... $12.99
Amazing soul from one of the greats of the 60s! This album was one of the first that Jerry cut for Mercury – where he'd begun working with the young team of Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff to completely rework the earlier sound he'd forged at Vee Jay Records. The album's still got Jerry singing in his wonderfully rich deep voice – hence the "iceman" in the title – but the songs have a bit more of a groove to them, with a soaring soul style that really lifts Jerry up, and pushes him onto a whole new generation of soul fans. The best proof of this are the hits "Hey Western Union Man" and "Never Give You Up" – but the whole album's great, and like most of Jerry's LPs, it's got many wonderful tunes hiding underneath the hits. Titles include "How Can I Get In Touch With You", "Can't Forget About You Baby", "Are You Happy", and "Go Away Find Yourself" – as well as other hits like "Lost" and "Only The Strong Survive". CD

Terry CallierFire On Ice ... CD
Elektra/DBK Works, 1978. New Copy ... $15.99 17.99
One of the great albums from Terry Callier's "second chapter" on record – a time when he was working for Elektra Records, and doing work that was a bit straighter soul than before – and also slightly jazzy as well! The record's kind of a mix of jazzy grooves and smoother soul – typical for the fusion division of Elektra at the time, where Callier's hard-to-peg work was relegated. There's some really great songs on the record – and although the arrangements sometimes lack the sensitivity of the Cadet scorings of earlier years, they're still pretty great from a modern soul perspective. Richard Evans is producing and arranging the session, and Terry's still got help from a lot of Chicago friends like Minnie Riperton, Eddie Harris, and Phil Upchurch – all of whom help to keep the album relatively strong. Titles include some really nice originals, like "African Violet" and "Butterfly", both of which are some of Terry's best compositions from the time – plus "Love Two Love", "Martin St Martin", "Street Fever", and "Be A Believer". A strange one for Legrand – a soundtrack written for an obscure action film that starred Rock Hudson, Ernest Borgnine, Jim Brown, and Patrick McGoohan! The music is mostly orchestral and dramatic – but given Legrand's genius, it's touched with warm chromatic elements that occasionally show his roots in other styles. The whole thing's packaged in a great gatefold cover with photos on the inside, and a dramatic 70s paperback-style painting on the back. Killer stuff – as Jerry's getting the full early Philly treatment here, with arrangements by Thom Bell, Bobby Martin, and Roland Chambers, and production by a young Gamble and Huff! The sound isn't nearly as icy as the old Vee Jay days – but that's fine with us, as Jerry is nice and soulful on tracks like "Moody Woman", "When You're Alone", "I Forgot To Remember", "Brand New Me", "What's The Use Of Breaking Up", and "Walking Around In Teardroops". A current Italian vocalist – but one who's taking a lot of cues from older singers of the 50s and 60s – particularly those of the ice-blonde sexpot variety! Anna's working here in a blend of acoustic and electric instrumentation – often given a retro-styled mode that reminds us of some of the Irma La Douce artists in recent years – but which also gets a bit more abstract as the set moves on. From covers of tunes like "Call Me" and "An Occasional Man", Anna moves into more personal original material like "Swimming" and "Could Be", which have a more modern, chilled out sort of groove that pushes the album into new territory. Hell Hath No Fury may have been on ice for years, but it appeared as an instant classic, WAY up at the top of the list of greatest hip hop LPs of the mid 00s. The Neptunes beats are very spare and chilly, despite the fiery title – while the Pusha T & Malice style of precise storytelling and detached deliveries probably make them one of the most natural duos in the game. A gritty rap masterpiece. Bobby HutchersonSolo/Quartet ... CD
Contemporary/OJC, 1981. Used ... $24.99
Bobby Hutcherson breaks it down in two different ways – solo on the first half of the record, and in a quartet on the rest! The set begins in a very spare way – Bobby playing vibes, marimba, xylophone, and bells – often a bit overdubbed, so that although alone, Hutcherson fills the tracks with a rich palette of sound – glowingly rhythmic lines that ring out with plenty of soul, and showcase a really under-tapped side of Bobby's talents! Remaining tracks are equally great, but in a totally different way – played by a righteous lineup that includes McCoy Tyner on piano, Herbie Lewis on bass, and Billy Higgins on drums – really working together beautifully in ways that make the album feel like a lost 70s soul jazz set. Forget Hutcherson's slick look on the cover – because this album's drenched in open, honest, acoustic feeling – a rich tapestry of sound and emotion, on tracks that include "Gotcha", "The Ice Cream Man", "For You Mom & Dad", "Messina", "My Foolish Heart", and "La Alhambra". The first solo album by Rita Lee – cut back when she was a member of the groundbreaking Tropicalia trio, Os Mutantes! The album's got a very different feel than her work with that group – and has Rita stepping out as a sophisticated pop singer, almost in the way that Nico did on the Chelsea Girl album, after leaving the Velvet Underground. Arrangements have a weird twisted edge – as Rita makes her way through a set of originals and a few covers, in an almost deadpan, ice-blond mode that reminds us of some of Jane Birkin's early work. Arrangements are by the great Rogerio Duprat, and titles include "Sucesso, Aqui Vou Eu", "Prisioneira Do Amor", "Hulla Hulla", "Tempo Nublado", "Precisamos De Irmaos", and "Calma" – plus a nice cover of "And I Love Her". One of the best records we've heard in years from Medeski, Martin, & Wood – a searing batch of grooves that really gets back to the trio's original brilliance, and which features some wonderful production from the Dust Brothers! There's a lean, hard, and funky sound to the set that struck us a real surprise after some of their recent recordings – a groove that often feels lifted straight off of a 70s funky soundtrack, inflected with some production touches to update the sound slightly, and accommodate a more beat-heavy approach that really helps their style a lot! The album features some guest guitar from Marc Ribot – nice and nasty, in a way that brings a real edge to the tunes – but as usual, it's the blend of keyboards, bass, and drums that push the real charm of the set! Titles include "Shine It", "Curtis", "Ice", "Bloody Oil", "Anonymous Skulls", "End Of The World Party", "Reflector", "Sasa", and "Queen Bee". CD

Shuggie OtisHere Comes Shuggie Otis/Freedom Flight ... CD
Epic/Raven (Australia), 1970/1971. Used ... $9.99
The first 2 Shuggie Otis albums on one CD – and with bonus material, too! Shuggie's well known for his trippy guitar work and vocals on the famous album Inspiration Information, and both of these sets predate that one – showing Shuggie in his formative years, stepping off some early work with his father Johnny Otis, and forging a messed-up mixture of soul, funk, and blues that forever made him one of the odder talents of his generation! Here Comes Shuggie Otis is more of a blues-driven effort, but still has some great guitar work from young Shuggie – but on Freedom Flight, he really takes off. The album's really the birthplace of Otis' psychedelic funky style, and is filled with cool little tracks that groove in a cosmically trippy way! The CD features the tracks "Oxford Gray", "Ice Cold Daydream", "Strawberry Letter 23", "Freedom Flight", "Purple", "Someone's Always Singing", "Sweet Thang", "Me & My Woman", "Funky Thithee", and "The Hawks" – plus the bonus cut "One Room Country Shack". ✨✧ Eddie PalmieriSuperimposition ... CD
Tico, 1970. Used ... Just Sold Out!
A real scorcher from Eddie Palmieri – as much a transition as a superimposition – and the kind of record that would have a huge impact on Latin jazz in the 70s! Eddie's got one foot in the small group styles of his 60s work, but he's also reaching forward in a mode that's rootsy and modern at the same time – a back-to-basics approach that's tremendously focused on the rhythm, and which mostly uses heavy percussion and piano to lay out the grooves – then tops them off with some jazzier riffing on brassy horns. Eddie's piano is sublime throughout – crackling with life and energy that barely made it onto record before, and hitting notes that are modern, yet which sit comfortably next to the earthier grooves of the rest of the band. Ismael Quintana's on lead vocals, and tracks include "Bilongo", "Pa'Huele", "La Malanga", "Chocolate Ice Cream", "17.1", and "Isn't It Pretty". CD

Chrysalis/Esoteric (UK), 1977. New Copy 2CD ... $16.99
Relatively late work in the classic years of Procol Harum – but as any true fan of the group will tell you, these guys never stopped being great – even if the rest of the world wasn't paying as close of attention as they were back in the 60s! Gary Brooker's vocals and piano are still going strong – and the songs have that great sense of structure and subtle drama that always made the group so unique – a mode that other groups might have overdone, but which is so well balanced here, the sound is completely sublime – full-on sonic punch one minute, spare elements the next – all handled with an honest, open vibe that was pretty darn unique in the glossy music world of 1977. Titles include "Strangers In Space", "Wizard Man", "Something Magic", "Skating On Thin Ice", "The Worm & The Tree", and "The Mark Of The Claw". 2CD set features bonus tracks "Backgammon", "You'd Better Wait (live)", and "This Old Dog (live)" – plus a full bonus CD that bfeatures a BBC Radio In Concert performance from 1977 – 11 more tracks, most from earlier years! Blue Note, 1968. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99 24.99
A seminal album from Hammond giant Lonnie Smith – a bold statement that really gives the organist his own identity after some killer work in the combos of Lou Donaldson and George Benson! Lonnie's one of the key flag-fliers of the new style of funky organ jazz – a mode different from the earlier styles of Jimmy Smith or Jimmy McGriff – leaner, cleaner, and often tied heavily to the drums – which, in this case, are handled by Marion Booker Jr, but in a way that recalls some of the Idris Muhammad greatness on other Blue Note albums of the time. The mighty Pucho (of Latin Soul Brothers fame) plays added timbales, and there's also two more conga players – ensuring a tight, yet complex sort of groove – and the frontline features Lee Morgan on trumpet, David Newman on tenor and flute, and Melvin Sparks on guitar. Tracks are long, with complicated rhythms – and soulful yet sophisticated solos to match – and titles include the seminal "Son Of Ice Bag", a great cover of "Think", and the tracks "Slouchin", "Call Of The Wild", and "Three Blind Mice". Snoop Dogg's last and best album for No Limit – a turn of the millennium effort that stands a a lot stronger in retrospect, and certainly signaling the coming resurgence Snoop would carrying pretty strongly in the new decade. After Death Row hit hard times and Snoop found into the No Limit camp, things didn't seem to be working so well, but inch by inch, Snoop seized more creative control and by this one, we're back to the Snoop we know and love. A bit odd looking back on it, but thankfully much of the record is produced by Dr Dre, with a few cuts from Timbaland, Jelly Roll, & Scott Storch. Includes guest spots for Nate Dogg, Eve, Lady Of Rage, Ice Cube, & KoKane, – and tracks include "Hennesey N Buddah", "Snoop Dogg (What's My Name Pt 2)", "Wrong Idea", "Set It Off", "Ready 2 Ryde", "Loosen Control", "Y'all Gone Miss Me", "Stacey Adams", and "I Can't Swim". A seminal pop psych classic from the UK scene – served up here by a group that seem to borrow a bit of the energy from the late 60s Bee Gees at their trippiest, but who also really have a way for turning out a tune that has a very groovy vibe! Part of the credit might go to producer John Schroeder – a Brit sound library giant in his own right, and clearly able to make the sound of the records guitars, organ, and vocals sound incredibly groovy. But it's also clear that the group have plenty of great energy of their own – as they kept on going strongly, even after this early breakout record. The mix of acoustic and electric elements is wonderful – these compressed guitar lines that are sometimes complex, sometimes flowing in waves – working with very inventive drums and percussion from Joe Bauer – who maybe even nods towards freer jazz styles at times. Piano is acoustic and electric, woven by Banana beautifully around the lead lyrics of Jesse Colin Young – on titles that include "It's A Lovely Day", "Sea Cow Boogie", "Misty Roses", "On Beautiful Lake Spenard", "Fiddler A Dram", and "Ice Bag". One of the most beautiful albums to come from the Hoboken scene in the 80s – a Feelies side project that's every bit as great as that group's albums from the time! But like Good Earth, the music here is deeply personal – much more so than the Feelies at their start – a real breath of fresh air in the 80s scene, with Dave Weckerman on vocals, and fantastic criss-crossed guitars from Glenn Mercer and Bill Million. An explosive look at the mighty songwriting legacy of The Beatles – served up here in a giant 3CD package that features the group's famous songs covered by a whole group of their contemporaries on the UK scene! You'd think that most of these artists might be jealous, or resentful – not wanting to give a nod to the songwriting skills of Lennon, McCartney, or Harrison – but instead, they really revel in the tunes – often really transforming them, and completely making them their own – in ways that follow some of the best inspirations of the new psych generation, and which make the whole collection a lot better than just some straight rehash of hits by the fab four! Light In The Attic, Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy ... $13.99 14.98
A look at Memphis soul music that goes way beyond any Stax, Goldwax, or Atlantic Records collections you might own – partly because all of the tracks here are from a time in the city when all those other labels had stopped recording! Memphis is usually remembered for a 60s/early 70s stretch when the city was brimming over with record labels, studios, and top soul talent – but that latter aspect of the scene didn't stop when the record companies went bust – and instead, it just went underground, as lesser-known artists kept on developing great new sounds and styles! As you'd guess from the title, most of the work here is in a modern soul mode – often with rhythms that have a bit of boogie or club in the mix, but also with some of that developing southern soul approach that was maybe more strongly associated with the Malaco label down in Jackson. The scope of music is great, and the set's got very detailed notes on this under-documented time in the history of Memphis soul music – to support a great tracklist that includes "Can We Melt The Ice" by Morris, "You Mean Everything To Me" by Sweet Pearl, "The Doctor" by LA, "Stone Crush On You" by OT Skyes, "What Does It Take To Know A Woman Like You" by Greg Mason, "Always" by Silk Satin & Lace, "Right Thing" by Kick, "Convict Me" by Libra, "Slice Of Heaven" by Cato, "I'm Choosing You" by Magic Morris, "No Seat Dancin" by Frankie Alexander, and "Keep It To Yourself" by Captain Fantastic & Starr Fleet. Epic/Luaka Bop, 1974. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An insanely wonderful album! Shuggie Otis is the son of Johnny Otis – the LA R&B maestro who was moving heavily into funk at the end of the 60s – and he has this tripped out, super-dope guitar style that he played to strong effect on Johnny's albums of the late 60s and early 70s, and on his first two solo albums, which were kind of bluesy in tone. For this album, though, he shocked the world by moving into a stripped-down mode that pairs his guitar with spare drum machine rhythms, flanged-out deeply soulful vocals, and one of the most laidback conceptions of funk you'll ever hear. The album's a landmark – one of those gems that's unlike anything else you can think of, but which will redefine your concept of what you want in a record for years to come. Every track's a winner – and the whole thing's a perfectly unified batch of tunes that includes instant classics like "Inspiration Information", "Island Letter", "Aht Uh Mi Hed", "XL 30", and "Rainy Day". Plus, this reissue features 4 tracks from Shuggie's Freedom Flight LP – including his original version of "Strawberry Letter 23", and "Sweet Thang", "Freedom Flight", and "Ice Cold Daydream". CD

Spaven is a jazz musician, but also mixes in equal parts production work – ala the legacy of 4Hero – and the set features vocals from Jose James on one track, and contributions from DJ Doo Wop on another. Yet the core of the music is Spaven's sound – drum lines that are broken, next to basslines that are pulsing, and really great keyboard work in a variety of sounds and styles! Titles include "Network", "Ice Is Nice", "Rockers Round Window", "Maz", and "Zeebra III" – plus the bonus track "1759 Outro", not on the original record. LP, Vinyl record album

Groovy stuff! The album features Johnny Dankworth's fab score for Modesty Blaise – the sexy slinky British queen of international adventure, played by Monica Vitti in the 1966 film. ✨✧ Lee HazlewoodSomething Special (with bonus tracks) ... CD
MGM/Light In The Attic, Late 60s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Pure genius from Lee Hazlewood – one of his gems cut for MGM in the 60s, and a session that features some great small combo backings! The feel here is almost a jazz-inflected take on the slight country tinge of Lee's other work – a style that's as sophisticated and unique as Hazlewood's well-penned lyrics and amazing vocals. Lee's completely at home here – working with the great engineer Eddie Brackett, who's sound for his vocals is just about as great as could be hoped – the matchless blend of ice and embers that perfectly defines the Hazlewood sound. All tunes are originals by Lee – and tracks include "Shades", "This Town", "Stone Cold Blues", "Child", "Little War", "Hands", "Fort Worth", "Them Girls", and "Mannford Oklahoma". Features two bonus tracks – "Moochie Ladeux" and "The Lone Ranger". CD

✨✧ Billy Larkin & The DelegatesBilly Larkin & The Delegates Featuring Clifford Scott ... CD
Aura/Fresh Sound (Spain), 1964/1965. Used ... Out Of Stock
Searing early work from Billy Larkin & The Delegates – a set of tracks that features work from their first 2 albums of the mid 60s – and which include some nice guest sax and flute from the great Clifford Scott! Larkin had a clean, lean sound on the Hammond that made his Delegates trio an instant hit with the west coast soul jazz underground of the 60s – almost a western counterpart to the sound of Jimmy McGriff in the east, but one that also went for a style that mixed in a bit more of a soul instrumental flair to the mix – resulting in a near-perfect jukebox groove that's still one of the greatest Hammond styles ever recorded! The set features 20 tracks in all – mostly from the Pigmy and Blue Lights albums for Aura – and titles include "Dallas Blues", "Transfusion", "Watch Your Motives", "Sticky Wicket", "Ice Water", "Hainty", "The Peeper", "Killer Joe", and "Blue Lights". And in case you're wondering, there's a fair bit of crossover here between the EMI UK Delegates set – but this one has much more of a focus on non-hit material, and includes mostly original numbers by the group and jazz-based compositions. ✨✧ Jeff LorberSoft Space ... LP
Inner City, 1978. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Nothing too soft here – as this classic from the Jeff Lorber group of the late 70s is a sweet fusion set with lots of soulful edges, but never a watered-down approach! The groove's much different than you'd expect from Lorber's later work – and the album's got lots of nice edges in the mix, even when things are mellow – a stripped-down sense of instrumentation and production that's a great reminder of how strong jazz like this could be before smoother cliches crept in to smother it! Jeff plays acoustic piano, Fender Rhodes, moog, and Oberheim four voice – and the rest of the group keeps time with a lightly soulful bounce, and some nicely peppered solos on alto and flute. The album features guest work by Chick Corea and Joe Farrell – and titles include "The Samba", "Black Ice", "Curtains", "Soft Space", "Swing Funk", and "Proteus". LP, Vinyl record album

The Mocambos are back, and mightier than ever – thanks to help from a lineup of all-stars who include Lee Fields, Jswiss, Ice T, Gizelle Smith, and even German sci-fi legend Peter Thomas! The core sound of the group is as before – tight funk by a large ensemble of all-star players who've worked in a variety of other contemporary funk settings – but the addition of deeper soul and hip hop vocals to the record really opens things up – and maybe makes us appreciate the instrumentation at the core even more, since these guys do so a great job of moving around to accommodate the setting. And yet the whole thing is still strongly unified with Mighty Mocambos power – a great take on older funk modes, on titles that include "Stronger", "Return To Space", "Golden Shadow", "Take On The World", "Here We Go", "Bounce That Ass", "Where Do We Go From Here", and "Macumba". PMG (Austria), 1978. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Sweet grooves from Harry Mosco – once the leader of The Funkees, but stepping out here with some wicked work from the London scene at the end of the 70s! The album's got a snapping electric vibe – sometimes clubby, but with more of a funk feel overall – thanks to some heavy basslines that really give the best cuts a kind of darkness – as do the horns, which create these down-turning inflections that are quite different than the usual sort of Afro-styled groove! Things get pretty freewheeling as the album moves on – and there's a criss-crossing of modes that almost reminds us of some of the work that Ice cut on the French scene of the time. A fantastic, freewheeling session from trumpeter Ted Curson – one that we'd rank right up there with his seminal sides for the French Futura label! Like those, this album really features Ted stretching things out – working in very loose trio formation, with just Ray Drummond on bass and Roy Haynes on drums – on these open-ended tunes that still swing with plenty of soul, even without any other instrumentation. Curson's horn is great – blown beautifully, and filled with spirit – and some numbers have him really reaching out with his sound, in ways that may well make the date one of Ted's most adventurous since the 60s! We're not sure if we'd call these guys "bad boys" – but we certainly love them to death, and their music only seems to get better and better with each new release! The Hypnotic Brass Ensemble first hit our ears over a decade back – first from attention they were getting overseas, but also because they're from our hometown of Chicago – younger musicians inspired by the legacy of their father, Phil Cohran of Artistic Heritage Ensemble fame! Yet their sound is nothing like their pops – as they're a brass-heavy group who maybe owe more to the experiments of Lester Bowie – using their instruments in ways that go far past any Nola-styled reference to the format – definitely with lots of jazz in the mix, but also a highly rhythmic approach that really comes through right from the very first note of this set – and keeps on rolling all the way through. Strut (UK), 2000. New Copy 3LP (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A really wonderful collection – an important re-investigation of the unusual mix of sounds and styles on the New York scene in the years after disco – a time when funk, punk, hip hop, and art were all colliding at once – providing a really fresh antidote to the staid sounds of Studio 54! The "disco" in the title should be taken lightly – as these cuts didn't play at the slick uptown dance spots – but were instead the soundtrack for the cool spots happening downtown, as the previous loft culture morphed into clubs, in this very special blend of the energy of CBGB and the underground soulful dancefloors. The set list is filled with classics from this time – and titles include "Cavern" by Liquid Liquid, "Tell You Today (voc)" by Loose Joints, "Walking On Thin Ice (re-edit)" by Yoko Ono, "Over & Over" by Material, "Spasticus Autisticus (version)" by Ian Dury & The Seven Seas Players, "Kiss Me Again (original edit)" by Dinosaur, "Move" by Nicky Siano, "School Bell/Tree House" by Indian Ocean, "I Walk" by Don Cherry, "Voices Inside My Head" by Common Sense, and "Wheel Me Out" by Was Not Was. A limited vinyl collection of work from the legendary Chicago pianist Muhal Richard Abrams – one of the founding members of the AACM, a hell of an improviser, and a musician who's also featured here with a focus on both his larger compositional vision, and some of his rare electronic performances! Side one features the classic "The Bird Song" from the late 60s – a long piece that features Anthony Braxton on alto, Kalaparusha Maurice McIntyre on tenor, Leroy Jenkins on violin, Thurman Barker on drums, and Abrams on piano and clarinet – plus some vocals from David Moore. Next are two shorter electronic pieces from 1989 and 1995 – "Conversations With The Three Of Me" and "Think All Focus One". George Adams, Martin Hannibal Peterson & FriendsMore Sightings ... CD
Enja/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1984. New Copy ... $16.99
An unusual date from tenorist George Adams – recorded right around the same time as his legendary records with Don Pullen, but instead a more unusual partnership with the great trumpeter Hannibal Marvin Peterson! The pairing is great – and both hornmen soar out and really get plenty of room to do their thing – in a mixture of hardbop energy and more spiritual currents, with help from John Scofield on guitar, Ron Burton on piano, Walter Schmocker on bass, and Allen Nelson on drums. The energy is maybe a bit more like some of Peterson's late 70s records than some of the Adams/Pullen material – and that quality makes the live date a nice standout in the catalog of both players. Titles include "Soul Brothers", "Do We Know Where We Are Going", "Melanie", "More Sightings", and "Don't Take Your Love From Me". CD

Johnny AdamsI Won't Cry – The Complete Ric & Ron Singles 1959 to 1964 ... CD
Ace (UK), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy ... $12.99 18.99
The best work ever from the great Johnny Adams – a Crescent City soul singer with a hell of a lot of power, brought into wonderfully strong focus here on these early recordings for the Ric & Ron label! Johnny recorded later in Nashville and Jackson, but he's never sounded better than on these early sides – which have a depth of feeling and timeless power that we'd rank right up there with some of the most important names during the early years of soul. The material is nicely free of overdone New Orleans styles – and instead has this care and class that really reaches out from the roots of the material, to showcase Johnny as a singer with a great deal of care and class, but one who's still able to let loose in the best deep soul modes too. Adams hardly ever got the chart coverage he should have deserved – but this 24 track set will more than support his strong legacy – with detailed notes, and a stunning array of tracks that include "Closer To You", "Teach Me To Forget", "Who You Are", "Showdown", "A Losing Battle", "Life Is Just A Struggle", "Cold Cold Heart", "Coming Around The Mountain", and "Nowhere To Go". Late 60s greatness from Pepper Adams – an overlooked session that's easily one of his most standout sides of the decade! There's an easygoing swing to the record that's simply wonderful – a well-blown sound that's never too overthought or academic – just pure proof of the sort of inroads that Pepper Adams made with the baritone sax back in the 50s, as he liberated the instrument from its work in the chorus to a fully-voiced solo instrument of its own! The other players certainly help contribute to the magic of the date – and in addition to a rhythm section that includes Tommy Flanagan on piano, Ron Carter on bass, and Elvin Jones on drums, the set also features Zoot Sims on tenor, blowing with a tone that's almost as deep as Adams! Titles include "Cindy's Tune", "I've Just Seen Her", "Serenity", "Inanout", "Punjab", "Elusive", and "Verdandi". CD

One of Cannonball Adderley's late funky sessions for Fantasy – and a record that still features some mighty heavy production from David Axelrod! The album's got that core groove that Axe and Cannon first crafted together at Capitol in the 60s – but the sound here has some definite 70s touches too – a bit more emphasis on electric piano, played here by Hal Galper – and rhythms that are even funkier than before! Other players include Nat Adderley on cornet, Walter Booker on bass, Roy McCurdy on drums, and King Errison on percussion – and titles include the excellent "Snakin' the Grass", which is just ripe for samplin', plus some other good grooves like "Second Son", "Saudade", "Five Of A Kind", and "Inside Straight".
