Frankie Goes To HollywoodWelcome To the Pleasuredome ... CD
ZTT/Island, 1984. Used ... $3.99
Arguably one of the greatest concept albums of the 80s – and the only really strong full length album cut by Frankie Goes To Hollywood! At the time of the set, the group was riding high on the success and controversy of their singles "Relax" and "Two Tribes" – but in the ambitious ZTT mode, sought to expand their sound way past familiar hits, and into a realm of sonic exploration that rivaled that of labelmates Art Of Noise. Don't get us wrong, because the Frankie of this album is still very much in groove-oriented territory – but they also let Horn take over with some more striking tunes that are both longer and shorter than the usual pop track – offsetting the vocal numbers on the record with a rich tapestry of musical backdrops that also more firmly forward the group's social and sexual leanings. The album features surprising covers of "War", "Do You Know The Way To San Jose", and "Born To Run" – plus the hits "Relax" and "Two Tribes", and the original numbers "Welcome To the Pleasure Dome", "Krisco Kisses", "The Ballad Of 32", "Wish The Lads Were Here", "Black Night White Light", "The Only Star In Heaven", "The Power Of Love", and "Bang". ✨✧ Hollywood BratsSick On You – The Album/A Brats Miscellany ... CD
Cherry Red (UK), Mid 70s. New Copy 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
Trashy glam rock from the Hollywood Brats – the UK followers of the New York Dolls that bring too much raw, gleeful and punchy tunefulness to their knockoff to incur any wrath from us Doll devotees! The approach is the same is Thunders & Co, as is the love of feathers and lace – with a sneering, pre punk fire that can't be discounted! The Brats might even be more of a progenitor to simple punk than all purpose sleaze of the Dolls – with tracks that include "Chez Maximes", "Another School Day", "Nightmare", "Empty Bottles", "Courtesan", "Then He Kissed Me", "Tumble With Me", "Southern Belles", "Drowning Sorrows", and "Sick On You". This great 2CD set brings together the full Sick On You album – mostly recorded in 1973, with a sound that's very advanced for its time – plus a Brats Miscellany of 15 more rare tracks from the same period! Rare work from one of the coolest cats on the LA scene of the 50s – bassist Harry Babasin, who also plays a bit of cello here – in work that's very much in the territory of Fred Katz with Chico Hamilton! BloodstoneTrain Ride To Hollywood – Original Soundtrack ... LP
London, 1975. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $4.99
Bloodstone's augmented here by a heck of a lot of studio players – more than enough to fill out the needs of the soundtrack to this so-so film from the mid 70s. A few cuts still have the group singing in their better harmony style, but more than a few numbers are remakes of 50s vocal group classics or older standards – in a mode that clearly shows that Bloodstone's control over the score was maybe not as strong as that of other groups working on soundtracks at the time. Titles include "Yakety Yak", "Hooray For Romance", "Go To Sleep", "I'm In Shape", and "Money". LP, Vinyl record album

Dyke & The BlazersI Got A Message – Hollywood 1968 to 1970 ... LP
Craft, Late 60s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $19.99 29.99
A heady second chapter of a legendary funk group that were only around for a few short years, but gave us some great music in the process – presented here with 16 unissued tracks from their years in Los Angeles, including work from members of the Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Band too! With so much unreleased music, the set's like a fresh discovery of Dyke & The Blazers – adding new takes and versions to the material they recorded in LA before Dyke passed all too quickly – making for a long-overdue addition to their small body of recorded work. Titles unissued stereo mixes of "We Got More Soul (full length)", "Funky Walk (full length)", "The Wobble (full length)", "Let A Woman Be A Woman Let A Man Be A Man", "Funky Bull (full length)", "Booga Jivin", "Stuff (full length)", "Runaway People (full length)", and "Moon" – plus the never-issued "The Walk (part 1 east)", "Do It Together (orig mix)", "WUFO Radio Spot", "Day Is Comin (demo)", and "I'm So All Alone (alt)". Also includes the cuts "Black Boy", "It's Your Thing", "You Are My Sunshine", and "Shot Gun Slim" – all very funky! LP, Vinyl record album

Jazz Hour, 1957. Used ... $4.99 6.99
Maynard Ferguson at one of the best points in his early career! The group on the set is Maynard's "Dream Band " – a small orchestra that featured Herb Geller, Richie Kamuca, Mel Lewis, Paul Moer, and Nino Tempo – and which was a perfect vehicle for Ferguson's hard-swinging approach to jazz. There's some slight Kenton touches here – in the shift between larger ensemble tones and breakaway solos – and given the strength of some of the horn players in the group, the latter part are especially nice! Tracks include "Geller's Cellar", "Blue Birdland", "Maynard The Fox", "Rosebud", "My Funny Valentine", and "Great Guns". CD

Ella FitzgeraldElla At The Hollywood Bowl – The Irving Berlin Songbook ... LP
Verve, 1958. New Copy ... $21.99 22.99
Not the only time that Ella Fitzgerald recorded at the legendary Hollywood Bowl – but a fantastic unreleased set that has the singer serving up a stunning live version of her Irving Berlin Songbook material! The set features backings by Paul Weston, who'd handled the original record – who sounds far more groovy and swinging than on his own albums of the 50s, which were mostly mellower mood music. Instead, he does a great job of bringing out all the vibrancy in these songs – which got a tremendous update for a new generation on Ella's studio album, but sound maybe even more personal and powerful here. Titles include "Supper Time", "Heat Wave", "The Song Is Ended", "Cheek To Cheek", "I've Got My Love To Keep Me Warm", "Let's Face The Music & Dance", "Let Yourself Go", and "Puttin On The Ritz". A nice little Verve session that breaks from the usual format – especially the "Songbooks" one – and features Ella in LA with small group backing by Jim Hall, Lou Levy, Wilfred Middlebrooks, and Gus Johnson. The set was recorded live at the Crescendo – in a jazzily swinging mode that's a bit looser than some of Ella's other Verve sessions, but which still demonstrates some nice control on the vocals. Titles include "Mr Paganini", "Stairway To The Stars", "Air Mail Special", "Blue Moon", "This Could Be The Start Of Something Big", and "Just In Time". CD

Ella FitzgeraldTwelve Nights In Hollywood (4CD set) ... CD
Verve/Hip-O Select, 1961/1962. Used 4 CDs ... $36.99
Massive music from Ella Fitzgerald – 4CDs worth of sublime small group recordings – all of them live, and all of them previously unissued! The set follows the same format of the Verve Ella In Hollywood album – recorded in a small club setting, with combo backing that really lets Fitzgerald open up and swing – inflecting the tunes with the kind of warmth and spontaneity that she brought to her famous live performances of the time – which were almost always more compelling than her studio sides, no matter how great those were too! The first 3CDs feature material from two weeks' worth of recording in May of 1961 – with backing from Jim Hall on guitar, Lou Levy on piano, Wilfred Middlebrooks on bass, and Gus Johnson on drums – and CD four features Ella returning to Hollywood for two more nights in 1962, with trio backing from Paul Smith on piano, Middlebrooks on bass, and Stan Levey on drums. There's a massive 77 tracks in all – handsomely package in a hardcover 7" square book – which also features beautiful color pages inside, lots of notes on the music, and design that's every bit as groovy as the old albums on Verve. Titles include "Joe Williams' Blues", "It's De-Lovely", "Lorelei", "I Can't Get Started", "Round Midnight", "Perdido", "Little White Lies", "Lover Come Back To Me", "Across The Alley From The Alamo", "Love For Sale", "Exactly Like You", "Mack The Knife", "Teach Me Tonight", "My Kind Of Boy", "It Had To Be You", "Hard Hearted Hannah", "All Of Me", and "Too Darn Hot/Ella's Twist". And, in case you're wondering, there's almost no repetition in the set at all – all discreet, unique tunes – not just the sort of rehash you might get in other concert box sets of this nature! CD

✨✧ Herb GellerJazz Studio 2 – From Hollywood ... LP
Decca, Mid 50s. Very Good ... $14.99
Easily one of our favorite of the Jazz Studio series on Decca – and despite the "from Hollywood" in the title, a great set of serious jazz! Geller works with a group that includes Milt Bernhardt on trombone, John Graas on French horn, Don Fagerquist on trumpet, Marty Paich on piano, and Howard Roberts on guitar – supported by the team of Curtis Counce on bass and Larry Bunker on drums. The overall approach is tight, but with lean and mean solos – similar to work by these players on labels like Mode or Nocturne at the time. Tracks are longish, and titles include "Do It Again", "Graas Point", "Laura", "Here Come The Lions", and "Paicheck". LP, Vinyl record album

One of the best Junior Mance albums from the time – mostly because it's got Melba Liston arranging a larger group to back up Junior on the set! As on most albums of this type, Junior's almost better when he doesn't have to lead a trio – because he can concentrate on bouncing around solo-wise, hitting some strident soulful grooves, while not having to worry about leading the bass and drums along. Tracks include "Invitation", "Spellbound", "Never On Sunday", "Tara's Theme", "On Green Dolphin Street", and "One Eyed Jacks". LP, Vinyl record album

Frank SinatraSinatra In Hollywood – 1940 to 1964 (6CD box set) ... CD
Reprise, 1940s/1950s/Mid 60s. Used 6 CDs ... $49.99
A landmark set – featuring a wealth of material that's never been released before! If you're a fan of Sinatra – and we certainly are – you'll know that at this point, every single studio recording that Frank ever made has been released. However, there's an equally strong batch of work from Frank's film career that has never been properly documented – largely because of contractual relations between the studios and record labels, and because many of the films never yielded enough material to make a full soundtrack album. Because of these reasons, and more, much of Frank's excellent vocal performances in 50s and 60s films have not been released – including wonderful work from films like Guys & Dolls, A Hole In The Head, Come Blow Your Horn, The Joker Is Wild, Paris When It Sizzles, Young At Heart, Meet Danny Wilson, and a number of other great films. Tracks from these films are combined with others from soundtracks that did come out – like Can Can, High Society, and others – but which haven't had a very good history in the CD era. In all, the set contains 160 tracks from the years 1940 to 1964 – and is completely essential if you're a fan of Sinatra's work. And even for more familiar soundtracks, there's rare material like different versions, promotional spots, interviews, and more – making for a completely wonderful document of Frank's rich career in films! Plus, the 6CD box also comes with a beautiful slipcover, and a hardcover book with images of the films, notes on the music, and more. A bargain at this price – and one that will fill in a heck of a lot of holes in your Sinatra collection! Heck, we'd be willing to buy this one just for the song "Adelaide", which is one of our favorites from Guys & Dolls, but was never issued until now! CD
(In a nice clothbound box.)

Killer California sounds from the 60s – all served up by studio wizard Gary Usher – a legendary talent who worked in the same generation as Brian Wilson and Phil Spector, but never got as much time in the spotlight! That was all OK with Gary, though – as he spent endless hours creating wonderfully groovy records – including some key cuts by big names, overlooked gems from the Sunshine generation, and a few that were completely cooked up in the studio by acts who never existed in the real world at all! The sound here is fantastic – really unified, and one of the richest tapestries of SoCal studio genius we've ever heard – all put together with detailed notes that finally tell the whole story behind Usher's work and so many of these tracks. 24 titles in all – with tracks that include "Same Girl" by The Neptunes, "My World Fell Down" by Sagittarius, "Go Go Getter" by Keith Green, "So You Say You Lost Your Baby" by Gene Clark, "School Is A Gas" by The Wheel Men", "Sunstroke" by Chad & Jeremy, "I Don't Wanna Say Goodnight" by The Forte Four, "Happy In Hollywood" by California, "It's A Happening Thing" by The Peanut Butter Conspiracy, "Codine" by Sean & The Brandywines, "You Ain't Going Nowhere" by The Byrds, "Just One More Chance" by The Hondells, "Baby What I Mean" by Spiral Starecase, and "Take My Hand" by Sons Of Adam. Nancy Wilson turns her wonderfully sophisticated vocal style towards a batch of hits from Hollywood films of the 40s, 50s, and 60s – arranged and conducted by Jimmy Jones, in that classy blend of jazz and soul that suited Wilson so well in the 60s! The style is really a cut above the usual – handled with great poise by Nancy throughout, but also done in a mode that's relaxed enough to get past some of the stodgier sounds of records like this. The mellower tunes are actually some of the best here – personal, reflective, and echoing the "Guess Who I Saw Today" sound of Wilson in the 60s. A killer collection of 50s R&B from LA's mighty Crown label – home to some of the hardest-hitting work on the west coast at the time! The set's a great overview of the best of Crown at the time – and despite the fact that the title says "rock n roll", the work's almost all in an R&B and vocal group mode – very hard-edged material that's hardly the stuff of high school dances in the gym! Titles include "Stranded In The Jungle" and "I Want You" by The Cadets, "Why Don't You Write Me" by The Jacks, "Good Rockin Daddy" by Etta James, "The Girl In My Dreams" by The Cliques, "Kansas City Blues" by Joe Turner, "Blow Joe Blow" by Joe Houston, and "Oop Shoop" by Shirley Gunter. And although you might worry that the collection of so many great talents on one stage might just create confusion – don't! Nice one! Dizzy did the soundtrack for the lost Shirley Clarke verite drama The Cool World – a beautiful black and white film shot mostly on location in the Harlem of the early 60s. Mal Wladron wrote the material for the score, and Diz plays the music with a moody emotionality that you don't often hear in his other 60's work. The recording was made by his great group that included Kenny Barron and James Moody, and the titles include "The Pusher", "Duke's Fantasy", "Coney Island", and "Enter Priest". The CD also features the groovier Dizzy Goes Hollywood, which features the same group doing jazz readings of 60's soundtrack themes like "Carioca", "Never On Sunday", "More", and "Walk On The Wild Side". The whole thing's got 22 tracks in all, and is a very cool slice of Dizzy's career that you'll be hard pressed to find on vinyl! CD

Great work from the Challenge Records label – an important indie on the early days of the west coast rock years, represented here in a flurry of mighty nice singles and rare sides! Challenge was partly owned by screen cowboy Gene Autry – and perhaps that lineage is what gives the label a bit more twang than some of the other west coast labels of the time – a vibe that's maybe a lot more like some of the Tennessee, Arkansas, or Texas indies – especially in the way that Challenge seems equally well-suited to rockabilly stompers, country twangers, and some raw rockers that really make the set take off! The collection features a whopping 28 titles from the legendary label – along with full notes on their music and impact – alongside tracks that include "So Tough" by The Kuf Linx, "She Just Tears Me Up" by Wynn Stewart, "Down On The Farm" by Big Al Downing, "Bad Dad" by Gene Davis, "You Can Say That Again" by The Four Teens, "Double Talkin Baby" by Bobby Milano, "Machine Gun" by The Rip Tides, "Hey Little Car Hop" by George Weston, "Annie's Not An Orphan Anymore" by Rochell & The Candles, and "Gotta Lotta Rhythm In My Soul" by Patsy Cline. A great record from The Crusaders – and an album that's really the start of the group's strong run of smooth funky jazz for the 70s – a very vibrant little set, even though the black and white cover makes the whole thing look a bit understated! The album's got the group dropping the "jazz" from their name, but it's still a great bit of LA funky soul jazz – with electric keyboards from Joe Sample that are very much in a late 60s mode, plus guitar from David T Walker and Arthur Adams, and bass from Chuck Rainey, in addition to fine work by regulars like Stix Hooper, Wayne Henderson, and Wilton Felder. Tracks have a tight and uncomplicated funky approach, with a slightly smooth edge – and titles include "Do Yourself A Favor", "Try A Little Harder", "Cold Duck Eddie", "Way Back Home", and the Afro-funky groover "Alekesam"! Way more than just another kiddie soundtrack – or an album for a childish TV show – as the set's a surprisingly groovy little record, almost Sunshine Pop in its best moments! We're not sure about the nature of the players or the singers – but arranger Jack Eskew put the whole thing together with a bouncy, bubbly groove that rivals the best pop-psych work of the late 60s on labels like Kapp or Uni – right down to the perfect combination of fuzzy guitars and organ in the instrumentation. Titles include "This Spot", "I'm Gonna Find A Cave", "We're The Banana Splits", "In New Orleans", "Toy Piano Medley", "Don't Go Away Go Go Girl", and the classic "Tra La La Song". CD also features bonus Splits songs – "The Very First Kid On My Block", "The Beautiful Calliope", "Let Me Remember You Smiling", and "Soul". The CD also features the album Here Comes The Beagles – from a very Splits-like show that features another group of singing animals! The Beagles aren't The Beatles, but they definitely have a strong Brit Invasion feel in their music – a UK way with a melody that's mixed with a few sunny Cali pop touches too. Very 60s, very groovy, and way better than just a kiddie record – with tunes that include "What More Can I Do", "Be The Captain", "I Wanna Capture You", "Indian Love Dance", and "You Satisfy". CD

✨✧ Seu JorgeLife Aquatic Studio Sessions ... CD
Hollywood, 2004. Used ... Out Of Stock
Tremendously beautiful work from one of our favorite-ever artists – performing here in a genre unto itself! We've always loved Seu Jorge's own work – the funky samba tunes and mellower guitar work that have made him one of the most exciting talents from Brazil in recent years – but his performance in Wes Anderson's film The Life Aquatic opened up a whole new side of his talents, an ability to perform in a solo acoustic setting that's even more stripped down than the barest work on his album Cru! In the film, Jorge performs a series of David Bowie tunes translated into Portugese – sung as if they're folksy ballads penned by the singer himself, and done with loads of jazzy inflections that really transform the songs from their original recordings. And while David Bowie doesn't seem too hot on the idea himself (at least according to his "damning with faint praise" quote in the notes), we're really stunned at how beautiful this work is – not a gimmick at all, but really personal, honest interpretations of the tunes that make them Jorge's own through his unique performance. The CD brings together 14 tracks from sessions recorded for the film – many of which were never presented in their entirety on screen, and which were not included at all on the official soundtrack for the movie – which only had 4 Seu Jorge songs in all. Really great stuff throughout – with titles that include "Life On Mars?", "Queen Bitch", "Five Years", "Suffragette City", "When I Live My Dream", "Quicksand", "Oh You Pretty Things", "Changes", and the original "Team Zissou". ✨✧ Laurindo AlmeidaGuitar From Ipanema (SHMCD pressing) ... CD
Capitol (Japan), 1964. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
Breezy bossa nova – Hollywood 60s style! The album's one of the best cut for Capitol by guitarist Laurindo Almeida – and has a sweet groovy little style that features Laurindo's lovely guitar work over some lightly dancing small combo backings that include flute, harmonica, organ, percussion, and even a bit of whistling on a few tracks! The vibe's very much in the best Verve/Impulse takes on the bossa – done with a clear California influence, which keeps things cool and breezy – and which also pushes Almeida past his sometimes-staid style on guitar. Two cuts also feature some great vocals by Irene Kral – and titles include "Twilight In Rio", "Old Guitaron", "Sarah's Samba", "Izabella", "Winter Moon", "Girl From Ipanema", and "Choro For People In Love". AmericaHoliday ... CD
Warner, 1974. Used ... $6.99
A perfect pairing of talents – the sublime vocals of America, and the genius studio talents of George Martin – who turns in some of his best production work since The Beatles! The album's one of the richest to date from America – shaking slightly free of the folksy elements of their previous sets, with some fuller backings arranged by Martin, yet still hanging onto a bit of acoustic instrumentation – and finding a way to blend the whole thing together that still holds onto all their greatness! Tunes are almost even more personal than before – and titles include "Tin Man", "Miniature", "Hollywood", "Baby It's Up To You", "You", "Old Man Took", and "Mad Dog". CD

David AmramYoung Savages – Original Soundtrack ... CD
Columbia/Intrada, 1961. Used ... $14.99
An overlooked jazz soundtrack from early 60s Hollywood – and some amazing early work from composer David Amram! Amram's always had an ear for higher-concept versions of jazz – but his approach here is a wonderful blend of modernity and spontaneity – just right for the sort of energy of the film, and it's JD "young savages" theme – and played by a very hip group of musicians that include Harold Land or George Barrow on tenor, Teo Macero on alto, Toots Thielemans on harmonica, and Amram himself on piano – playing in this very cool Monk-like style. Some cuts are more jazz combo modes – like the long jazz numbers, including "Harold's Way Out", "True Blue", and "Las Muchacas Delicadas". Other cuts have more of a soundtrack approach, but still with great jazz elements – and these include "Rooftops", "Help", "Subway Sounds", and "Theme From The Young Savages". CD

✨✧ Elmer BernsteinAva Collection (Walk On The Wild Side/Carpetbaggers/Caretakers/Baby The Rain Must Fall/To Kill A Mockingbird/Movie & TV Themes) ... CD
AVA/Intrada, 1962/1963/1964/1965. Used 3CD ... $34.99
A great collection of 60s soundtracks from Elmer Bernstein – all originally issued by the indie Ava label, where Bernstein was one of the biggest stars! Elmer had already had a number of years experience working in Hollywood – including some classic late 50s scores that perfectly mixed jazz with larger orchestrations, in a style he explored even more fully on some of the best material here. Yet some of the other soundtracks show Bernstein's increasingly good ear for a dramatic moment – the kind of under-done passages that really had a way of doing a lot with just a little – lessons learned from jazz, then recast back onto larger arrangements, but without any of the Hollywood bombast of decades before. These moments really make the soundtracks sparkle – bits of illumination that resonate strongly throughout the 3CD passage, and draw some surprising links between all the different film scores presented within. The set features five full soundtrack albums – Walk On The Wild Side, The Carpetbaggers, The Caretakers, Baby The Rain Must Fall, and To Kill A Mockingbird – plus the additional Movie & TV Themes record by Bernstein. Black PumasCapitol Cuts – Live At Studio A (red vinyl pressing) ... LP
ATO, 2021. New Copy ... $18.99
A hell of a record from The Black Pumas – one that maybe stands as a great answer to anyone who might think they're just a flash in the pan! The set was recorded in late 2020, after the group had faced a season of cancelled shows, and life in isolation – which left them heading to the Capitol Studios in Hollywood, and bursting forth with a really back to basics vibe – a mix of soulful vocals and funky instrumentation that really goes back to the sound that inspired the group in the first place! The whole thing was recorded live, with no overdubs or anything else – and there's a classic/contemporary blend that's great – on titles that include "Colors", "Know You Better", "Old Man", "I'm Ready", "Black Moon Rising", "Stay Gold", and "Red Rover". ✨✧ ClusterZuckerzeit ... LP
Brain/Superior Viaduct, 1974. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99 24.99
A slightly sweeter version of Cluster than on previous records – a bit more focused, tuneful, and rhythmic – thanks to some great use of the "rhythmusmaschine"! Most numbers here have a slightly pulsating feel – one that really prefaces the electronic modes that would come from the UK at the end of the decade, especially the best work of the Sheffield scene. Cluster here show the way brilliantly – taking the longer jams of earlier years, and honing them down into simple melodies and rhythms – yet still delivered with a fair bit of edge throughout, and not nearly as much of the softness that would characterize later work by Moebius or Roedelius. Tracks include "Hollywood", "Caramel", "James", "Rote Riki", "Fotschi Tong", and "Marzipan". LP, Vinyl record album

Beat (Italy), 1965. New Copy ... $17.99 23.99 About June 9, 2023
A score that's perhaps a bit more in a Hollywood mode than later work from Italian maestro Francesco De Masi – done in a mood that really fits the image of the cowboy on the cover! Fuller orchestrations are mixed with isolated elements on harmonica and guitar – and there's a very Americanist spirit to some of the music, with uplifting themes and a hopeful spirit of action that's different than the moodier styles of the spaghetti western generation! CD is the first time the full music has been presented like this – expanded out to a total of 25 tracks, many of which appear here for the first time ever! CD

Earth Wind & FireAll 'N All (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Columbia, 1977. New Copy ... $6.99 7.99
Genius, pure genius! It was hard for Earth, Wind & Fire to go wrong at this point – and the album's a stellar blend of jazz, funk, and soul, all done in that perfect style they'd hit by the mid 70s. And even though this one was a monster album, of the type that you see in everyone's record collection from the time, it's still got a freshness that we always forget about – and lots of nice twists and turns that show that the band hadn't lost their more sophisticated roots. Case in point is the wonderful "Brazilian Rhyme", a short little groover that you'll instantly recognize as a sample from the first Tribe Called Quest album. Other tracks include "Jupiter", "In The Marketplace", "Magic Mind", "Runnin", "Be Ever Wonderful", and "Serpentine Fire". Plus, the CD features bonus tracks "Would You Mind?", "Runnin (original Hollywood mix)", and "Brazilian Rhyme (live)". CD

Animal/Mr Bongo (UK), 1982. New Copy (reissue)... $18.99 30.99
A really great record, and maybe one of the few hip hop soundtracks to get at the real feel of the music on the streets – maybe no surprise, as the film for which it was created did the same thing! This isn't a fluffed-up Hollywood take on hip hop, with mainstream soul thrown into the mix – as the record was put together by Fab 5 Freddy and Chris Stein – the latter of whom really invests in his hip hop cred away from Blondie, and also provides some cool guitar bits and effects in the music too! There's some great freestyle bits and turntable tracks that really get at the underground side of the music that was alive and well at the time – and titles include "Wild Style Theme Rap 1" by Grandmaster Caz & Chris Stein, "Basketball Throwdown" by Cold Crush Bros & The Fantastic Four, "Stoop Rap" by Double Trouble & Rodney Cee, "Rammellzee & Shock Dell at the Amphitheatre" with Grandmixer DST, "Wild Style Subway Rap 2" by Grand Master Caz & Chris Stein, and "Cold Crush Brothers At The Dixie". Jerry FullerDouble Life – The Challenge Recordings 1959 to 1966 ... CD
Challenge/Ace (UK), 1960s. Used ... $9.99
The underappreciated 60s vocal sides of ace songwriter Jerry Fuller – groovy 60s recordings that range from large scale uptempo gems to more of a rollicking smaller scale pop mode – and grandly groovy in both realms! Jerry wrote songs for Rick Nelson and others starting in the late 50s, but his own recordings didn't get over as big, but it's not for a lack of quality. Jerry wrote a number of the tunes in this collection of his work for the Challenge label, but even more of great tunes that made the rounds at the time by others. Great stuff all around, with titles including "What Happened To The Music", "Double Life", "Tennessee Waltz", "Guilty Of Loving You", "The Place Where I Cry", "Don't Let Go", "Anna From Louisiana", "I Only Came Here To Dance With You", "Hollywood Star" and more. Galdston & ThomAmerican Gypsies ... LP
Warner, 1977. Near Mint- ... $6.99
Phil Galdston and Peter Thom are one of those great lost duos from the 70s AOR years – a time when it seemed that two male artists working together could make some especially great magic in the studio! And for this overlooked set, the pair get some great production help from John Simon – the maestro who made so many magical records in the late 60s and early 70s for Columbia and Warner – and whose beautiful touch really seems to make all the right elements here gel so perfectly! Most tunes have a lightly tripping vibe – with warm keyboards and riffing guitars underneath the vocals – and the duo sometimes sing together, sometimes trade back and forth – on titles that include "When The Silence Stops", "Sweepin It Under", "Everybody's Goin Hollywood", "It Won't Work", "No One Gave Me Love", and "Savannah Sunny Sunday". Jerry GoldsmithChinatown ... CD
ABC/Varese, 1974. Used ... $14.99
Jerry Goldsmith's score for one of the greatest movies of the 70s – done with this spacious mix of jazzy elements that's completely sublime – and a bit like some of Johnny Mandel's best scoring too! The film is set in the 30s, but Goldsmith uses a lot of mature 70s elements in his music – nothing electric or funky, but just these open orchestrations that are really wonderful, and especially moody – sometimes laced with a jazzy trumpet solo, or a bit of piano – almost with that old Hollywood-through-crumbling LA of the 70s motif that you'd find in the music to Long Goodbye. Titles include "The Wrong Clue", "The Captive", "The Boy On A Horse", "The Last Of Ida", "Easy Living", and "Noah Cross". CD
