VariousHoney & Wine – Another Gerry Goffin & Carole King Song Collection ... CD
Ace (UK), 1960s. New Copy ... $9.99 18.99
Sublime sounds from the songwriting team of Gerry Goffin and Carole King – a tremendous little package that features some of their biggest hit singles, and a fair bit of unusual work as well! The package is the second set from Ace to feature the Goffin/King magic – and it's proof that the pair had plenty of greatness to offer back in the 60s – a never-ending flow of wonderful music, recorded here by an array of soul, rock, and pop artists of the time. The songs originally appeared on a variety of different labels, but have been collected together here – presented with tune-by-tune notes that not only tell the story of the songs, but the particular recordings as well. Titles include "A Long Way To Be Happy" by Carolyn Daye, "Honey & Wine" by The Hollies, "I Happen To Love You" by The Myddle Class, "So Goes Love" by The Turtles, "No Easy Way Down" by Nancy Wilson, "Oh No Not My Baby" by Maxine Brown, "Go Away Little Girl" by Bobby Vee, "Brand New World" by Bobby Scott, "Not Just Tomorrow But Always" by Bertell Dache, "Tell Daddy" by Ben E King, "I Need You" by Chuck Jackson, "Stage Door" by Peter James, "He Hit Me & It Felt Like A Kiss" by Jody Miller, "Don't Forget About Me" by Barbara Lewis, "Take A Giant Step" by The Rising Sons, and "Is This What I Get For Loving You" by Marianne Faithful. VariousRock & Roll Music – The Songs Of Chuck Berry ... CD
Ace (UK), Late 50s/1960s/1970s. New Copy ... $9.99 18.99
Chuck Berry may have been a hell of a hitmaker on his own – but he also helped lots of other folks hit the heights, too – thanks to the fantastic songs he penned over the years! Berry's original versions are the stuff of early rock and roll gold – but the tunes here take off in all sorts of directions – from rockabilly to country, garage, psych, soul, and even a bit of folk as well – served up by a surprisingly large amount of artists you might not never associate with Chuck's music! The package is definitely one of the most striking in the "songwriter" series from Ace Records – and like the others, it's done with a similar sort of depth – including notes on all the many unusual records included in the collection. Titles include "Roll Over Beethoven" by Helen Dixon, "Around & Around" by Swinging Blue Jeans, "Nadine" by The Bunch, "I'm Talking About You" by The Remains, "Oh Baby Doll" by The Pretty Things, "Come On" by Ian Gomm, "Memphis" by Don Covay, "You Never Can Tell" by John Prine, "The Promised Land" by Dave Edmunds, "Beautiful Delilah" by The Count Bishops, "Back In The USA" by MC5, "You Can't Catch Me" by Sleepy LaBeef, "Sweet Little Sixteen" by The Hollies, "Almost Grown" by Syndicate Of Sound, "Too Much Monkey Business" by Elvis Presley, and "No Money Down" by John Hammond. ✨✧ Lost SoulsLost Souls (with bonus tracks) ... LP
Lion, Late 60s. New Copy 2LP ... Out Of Stock
A group who definitely live up to their name – given that their recordings are so obscure, they were lost souls from the very start! Yet there's also a genius here that should have made them huge – an inherent tunefulness that clearly shows a love of The Beatles, Hollies, and a handful of other Brit groups – but delivered with an edge that's more like early Who or Creation – and by that last reference, we mean both the fab 60s British group, and the later 80s label with the same name! These tunes are fantastic little gems – catchy, but not commercial – charming, but never cloying – and often driven by some exceptionally strong basslines at the bottom, which works great with the warmer vocal harmonies and jangly guitars. Titles include "Dare To Surmise", "Love I Won't Admit", "Look At Me", "Things That Are Important", "Diamond Head", "Livin The Way I Want To", and "Trashcan Throne" – and the set also features a few live tracks, and some bonus material too – 29 titles in all, by a group who hopefully won't be lost souls any longer! ✨✧ VariousLooking Through A Glass Onion – The Beatles' Psychedelic Songbook 1966 to 1972 (3CD set) ... CD
Grapefruit (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 3CD ... Out Of Stock
An explosive look at the mighty songwriting legacy of The Beatles – served up here in a giant 3CD package that features the group's famous songs covered by a whole group of their contemporaries on the UK scene! You'd think that most of these artists might be jealous, or resentful – not wanting to give a nod to the songwriting skills of Lennon, McCartney, or Harrison – but instead, they really revel in the tunes – often really transforming them, and completely making them their own – in ways that follow some of the best inspirations of the new psych generation, and which make the whole collection a lot better than just some straight rehash of hits by the fab four! The song selection is brilliant – dozens of tracks that we never would have heard otherwise – and as with all Grapefruit packages like this, the whole thing comes with a detailed booklet of notes on the music – way more information than you'd find even if you spent the whole day searching online. 68 tracks in all – with work from The Sorrows, Ice, The Spectrum, Real McCoy, The Eyes, Loose Ends, Rainbow Ffolly, Affinity, Yes, Blonde On Blonde, Spooky Tooth, Big Jim Sullivan, The Gods, Orange Bicycle, The Tremeloes, Jason Crest, Tomorrow, Circus, The Hollies, Camel, and many others!
