HolliesEvolution ... LP
Epic, 1967. Very Good- ... $11.99
Wonderful work from The Hollies – from a time when the group was moving way past simple Brit Invasion pop – as you 'can probably guess from the cover and title! The Hollies hit a really special sort of sound here – slightly trippy, but still razor-sharp – making great use of the voice of Graham Nash, and also getting some perfect assistance on arrangements from Mike Vickers – who knows how to be ambitious with arrangements, but still keep things very focused! The tunes are overflowing with new ideas, but are still super-catchy too – and titles include "Water On The Brain", "Then The Heartaches Begin", "Rain On The Window", "Games We Play", "Lullaby To Tim", and "When Your Light Turned On". LP, Vinyl record album
(Yellow label stereo pressing with 1B/1C matrix.)

HolliesHear! Here! ... LP
Imperial, 1965. Very Good- ... $11.99
The second album of Brit Invasion greatness from The Hollies – the reworked US version of their album Hollies that came out in the UK – armed with more original material than their earlier LP, but the group's skillful way with songs penned by others – including Curtis Mayfield & Roy Orbison as great as any of their peers! From raw rockers with impeccable harmonies, to very well done R&B styled numbers, it all sounds great! Titles include "I'm Alive", "Very Last Day", "Down The Line", "Lawdy Miss Clawdy", "Too Many People" and more. LP, Vinyl record album
(Mono pressing with deep groove. Cover has light aging, with some writing in pen on back.)

VariousLooking Through A Glass Onion – The Beatles' Psychedelic Songbook 1966 to 1972 (3CD set) ... CD
Grapefruit (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 3CD ... $24.99
An explosive look at the mighty songwriting legacy of The Beatles – served up here in a giant 3CD package that features the group's famous songs covered by a whole group of their contemporaries on the UK scene! You'd think that most of these artists might be jealous, or resentful – not wanting to give a nod to the songwriting skills of Lennon, McCartney, or Harrison – but instead, they really revel in the tunes – often really transforming them, and completely making them their own – in ways that follow some of the best inspirations of the new psych generation, and which make the whole collection a lot better than just some straight rehash of hits by the fab four! The song selection is brilliant – dozens of tracks that we never would have heard otherwise – and as with all Grapefruit packages like this, the whole thing comes with a detailed booklet of notes on the music – way more information than you'd find even if you spent the whole day searching online. 68 tracks in all – with work from The Sorrows, Ice, The Spectrum, Real McCoy, The Eyes, Loose Ends, Rainbow Ffolly, Affinity, Yes, Blonde On Blonde, Spooky Tooth, Big Jim Sullivan, The Gods, Orange Bicycle, The Tremeloes, Jason Crest, Tomorrow, Circus, The Hollies, Camel, and many others! ✨✧ VariousWild Thing – The Songs Of Chip Taylor ... CD
Ace (UK), 1960s/Early 70s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A much-needed look at songwriter Chip Taylor – best-remembered for penning the Troggs' classic "Wild Thing", but the man behind some other wonderful work of the 60s as well! As you'll hear in this wonderfully-collected set, Taylor's tunes found plenty of welcome ears in both the rock and soul sides of the music spectrum – no surprise, as his songs often have a timeless, personal quality that we'd rank right up there with the work of Jimmy Webb – although most of Chip's compositions are often a bit more playful as well! As with others in the "songwriter" series from Ace, this volume presents the material with rich track-by-track notes, label scans, and vintage photos – a very detailed look at Taylor's tunes, with titles that include "I Can't Let Go" by Evie Sands, "Country Girl City Man" by Billy Vera & Judy Clay, "Sneakin Up On You" by Peggy Lee, "Picture Me Gone" by Madeline Bell, "Is That You" by Arthur & Mary, "Welcome Home" by Walter Jackson, "Son Of A Rotten Gambler" by The Hollies, "Wake Up John" by Little Eva, "Tommy" by Reparata & The Delrons, "My Johnny Doesn't Come Around Any More" by Debbie Rollins, "His True Love For You" by Al McCarther, "Make Me Belong To You" by Barbara Lewis, "Any Way That You Want Me" by Tina Mason, "Try Just A Little Bit Harder" by Lorraine Ellison, and "I Want The Real Thing" by Chip Taylor himself. ✨✧ SecretsInfatuation – Singles & Demos 1966 to 1968 ... CD
Grapefruit (UK), Late 60s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Great early work from The Secrets – a UK group that features early contributions from later singer/songwriter Clifford T Ward – but in a style that's much more group-oriented overall! Ward's already a hell of a songwriter – and loads of the cuts here are under-discovered nuggets that sparkle at a level that only a rare few Brit records of this time can do – sweet, but never poppy – clever, but never too much so – and often with a heartfelt, emotional candor that we might link to the best by The Hollies and Zombies. And in fact, there's an instant charm here that definitely recalls Hollies at their best – a way of doing a heck of a lot with just a little, and really bringing forth special qualities in the tunes without resorting to overdone gimmicks or studio interference – although the production here is pretty darn groovy too. The collection features loads of singles from the group, plus rare demos and unreleased tracks – all with richly detailed notes in the best Cherry Red tradition. Titles include "Infatuation", "She's Dangerous", "Such a Pity", "I Suppose", "Sympathy", "I Think I Need The Cash", "The Gloria Bosom Show", "Looking Down The Glass", "The Same Applies To You", "Teacher", and "I Intend To Please". ✨✧ VariousOn The Detroit Beat – Motor City Soul UK Style 1963 to 1967 ... CD
Ace (UK), Mid 60s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
British rock, but with plenty of soul – as these artists were some of the first in the world to be influenced by the sound of early Motown Records – then set about trying to create their own strand of Detroit soul! The influence of Motown on the sound of so many other scenes has been well documented over the years – but this cool little set gets right to the heart of the matter – by representing the kind of British singers and groups who were some of the first to revel in the spirit of Berry Gordy and his creations – then find a way to move things forward with new recordings of their own! As always with Ace Records, the set is way more than just music – as there's a big booklet of notes, with details on all the many tracks and artists – a double dozen selection, with tracks that includes "Sweet Thing" by Georgie Fame, "Mickey's Monkey" by The Hollies, "No 1 In Your Heart" by Herbie Goins & The Nighttimers, "Heat Wave" by Beverley Jones & The Prestons, "One Of These Days" by Guy Darrell, "I Want To Go Back There Again" by Bill Kenwright & The Runaways, "The Way You Do The Things You Do" by Elkie Brooks, "I'll Be Doggone" by Billy J Kramer with The Dakotas, "As Long As I Know He's Mine" by Julie Grant, "Money" by The Undertakers, "I Want A Love I Can See" by John Leyton & The LeRoys, "Stubborn Kind Of Fellow" by The Roulettes, "Every Little Bit Hurts" by Spencer Davis Group, "You Really Got A Hold On Me" by Small Faces, "Never Leave Your Baby's Side" by Tony Jackson, "No Good Without You" by The Birds, and "Let's Go Somewhere" by Beryl Marsden.
