✨✧ Hidehiko Sleepy Matsumoto & The Great Jazz TrioSession – Sleepy Meets The Great Jazz Trio ... CD
Next Wave/Universal (Japan), 1980. Used ... Just Sold Out!
An excellent pairing of this famous Japanese reedman and the hip American Great Jazz Trio – and one of the few Sleepy Matsumoto sessions to get some play in the US! Hidehiko "Sleepy" Matsumoto is one of the best tenor talents to come out of Japan in the past 30 years – a player with a deep, rich tone that rivals some of the American greats from years back who inspired him – a perfect match for the warm, soulful sounds from the trio of Hank Jones on piano, Eddie Gomez on bass, and Al Foster on drums. The material here is nice and fresh – as the tracks are long, and all originals by Matsumoto, who plays with a warm relaxed tone throughout the recording. Titles include "Brother Jones", "So K", "Tender Moment", and "Sleepy's Theme". CD
(Out of print 2009 Japanese SHMCD pressing, includes obi.)

✨✧ Hidehiko MatsumotoSleepy ... CD
Three Blind Mice/Craftman (Japan), 1976. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Hidehiko Matsumoto may have the nickname of "sleepy", but his playing is anything but – and at the time of this recording, he was easily one of the greatest saxophonist working the Japanese scene! The style of the album has Matsumoto right out front on most numbers – getting backing from piano, bass, and drums – but often in ways that are somewhat restrained and spacious, in the Three Blind Mice mode of the period. Sleepy plays his usual tenor sax, plus some great flute too – and titles range from mellow, introspective tunes that really showcase his lyrical side – to a few faster tunes that take off with a very nice edge. Titles include "Duke's Days", "Chasin The Blues", "You Don't Know What Love Is", "Typhoon", and "Right Down Step". CD

✨✧ Hidehiko MatsumotoModern Jazz ... CD
Teichiku/Think (Japan), 1960. Used ... Out Of Stock
An early gem from Hidehiko "Sleepy" Matsumoto – easily one of the greatest players on the Japanese scene of the postwar years, and a tenorist who we might easily compare to the great Hank Mobley! This album's got the same sort of soulful subtlety of Mobley's classic Soul Station – an easygoing blend of strong tenor leads, piano, bass, and drums – plus a bit of guitar that mostly sits back in the rhythms and complicates them slightly. Hidehiko's tone is wonderful – bold, strong, and deep, but extremely personal too – very much at home with the familiar standards of the set, yet not in a way that has him sleepwalking through them. Titles and players are all in Japanese, so we can't tell you much more – but take it from us, this album's a cooker, especially if you dig the laidback Blue Note work of Hank Mobley or Ike Quebec! ✨✧ Junko Mine with Sleepy MatsumotoI Wish You Love ... CD
All Art/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1978. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A really classic-styled vocal set from singer Junko Mine – one that also features superb tenor solos from the great Hidehiko Sleepy Matsumoto – who punctuates the music in all the right ways! The set's a 70s album, but done with the care and class of a Verve Records vocal session from back in the day – mixing Junko's vocals with some small combo backings and some larger arrangements – all wrapped around a set of American standards that take on a great new life here, thanks to Mine's unique phrasing. The set features a great bongo-driven version of "On A Clear Day" – plus "Where Or When", "Spring Is Here", "The Lady Is A Tramp", "Come Rain Or Come Shine", "I Wish You Love", All The Way", and "I've Got You Under My Skin". Hideo ShirakiMan Who Causes A Storm ... CD
Super Fuji Discs (Japan), 1957. New Copy (pic cover)... $23.99 26.99
A rare soundtrack session from Japanese jazz legend Hideo Shiraki – maybe one of the earliest recordings we've ever seen from the drummer – and one that also features work from pianist Takeshi Inomata and saxophonist Hidehiko "Sleepy" Matsumoto as well! The cover's somewhat unassuming, but the music inside is quite vivid and rich – jazz tracks used as a film score, often with a quality that's like the best jazz soundtracks coming out of French and Italian cinema at the end of the 50s – with a very different vibe than some of Shiraki's later albums as a leader! There's a nicely moody, late nite quality to many of the tracks – and instrumentation shifts throughout, but includes vibes, tenor, guitar, and piano – all elements used without as much heavy drum work from Hideo as you might expect. The set features dozens of short tunes, and runs for over 70 minutes in length – a huge document of this rare Japanese jazz material from the postwar years. CD

✨✧ George Kawaguchi's Big 4Big 4 ... CD
Three Blind Mice/Craftman (Japan), 1976. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Japan's legendary drummer steps out here with a killer combo – definitely a "big 4", given that the group features excellent tenor work from Hidehiko "Sleepy" Matsumoto, plus Fender Rhodes and acoustic piano from Hideo Ichikawa! Kawaguchi's famous sense of swing really gets the whole thing going – that big, round approach to the drums that was somewhere in a space between Art Blakey and Buddy Rich – and which was definitely hitting some of its hipper tones by the time of this 70s set. The group also features Takashi Mizuhashi on bass – and titles include "Invader 7", "Albatross", "Monday Samba", and "Sleepy's Funk". CD
(Part of the Three Blind Mice Supreme Collection!)
