Heliocentrics13 Degrees Of Reality ... CD
Now Again/Stones Throw, 2013. New Copy ... $7.99 17.98
If this is reality, lead us onward – as the set is a mindblowing batch of trippy psych-funk from The Heliocentrics – even more offbeat and experimental than before, in ways that make the combo the true heirs to the legacy first begun by Stark Reality! The album's definitely funky at the core, but it's also filled with loads of amazing sounds – instruments tuned weirdly, played weirdly, and produced weirdly – so that over the heavy drums, there's often lots of freaky, fuzzy bits and tripped-out sounds – in ways that make the record feel like some lost acid trip outtakes from the Westbound studios of the early 70s – or like some obscure funk band that dropped acid at Andy Warhol's loft! The packaging offers up a visual example of what your ears will be going through when you tune into the music – and titles include "Mysterious Ways", "Collateral Damage", "Black Sky", "Calabash", "Path Of The Black Sun", "Mr Owusu I Presume", "Eastern Begena", and loads of cool interlude tracks too. CD

HeliocentricsInfinity Of Now ... CD
Madlib Invazion, 2020. New Copy ... $12.99 15.98
A fantastic mix of heady sounds and heavy funk from The Heliocentrics – and a record that continues the vibe of their previous set – in which the team of Malcolm Catto and Jake Ferguson were joined by the lovely vocals of Barbora Patkova! Patkova's presence is just what the group needs to really ground their sound – a female singer up front, but one who's as equally comfortable with distortion, fuzz, and echoey spaces as the two instrumentalists – a trio who continue that unique tradition of psychedelic funk that we first loved in Catto's early work on Mo Wax! Titles include "99% Revolution", "Hanging By A Thread", "Nonsense (part 1)", "Light In The Dark", "People Wake Up", "Burning Wooden Ship", and "Elephant Walk". CD

✨✧ HeliocentricsQuatermass Sessions – From The Deep ... CD
Now Again/Stones Throw, 2016. New Copy ... $6.99 15.98
Not the original Quatermass EP from The Heliocentrics – but material that takes off in an even fuller, heavier direction – and which may well be the funkiest sounds we've heard from these guys so far! The music is stunning right from the very first heavy bassline and sharp drum crackle – more focused, more full-on, and more funky than before – with this mindblowing mix of super-tight rhythms and nicely trippy work on keyboards and guitar – all freaky and fuzzy, but always with a sense of purpose, too – and never just crazy for the sake of crazy! These guys really hit a new high with this set – simply wonderful, and at a level that has us falling in love with them all over again. Titles include "The Pit", "Gas Bottle", "Discovery", "Phenomenon Of Man", "Telekinesis", "Night & Day", "Looking Back", "Mass Psychosis", and "The Final Conclusion". CD

✨✧ Heliocentrics & Melvin Van PeeblesLast Transmission ... CD
Now Again, 2014. New Copy 2 CDs ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A mindblowing collaboration between The Heliocentrics and underground film legend Melvin Van Peebles – a set that has the group serving up some madly trippy grooves, while Melvin speaks and sings some wisdom of his own! Van Peebles already blew our minds years ago with his insane soundtrack to Sweet Sweetback's Baaaadasss Song – still one of our favorite records of all times – and The Heliocentrics follow in the odd spirit of that gem, by mixing lots of sounds and styles together in a mad cacophony of music – then leaving just the right amount of space for Melvin to come into the mix! Instrumentation is often fuzzy and psych-oriented, but always with a funky, soulful vibe as well – of the sort you'd hear on vintage records from Van Peebles – and titles include "Big Bang Reincarnation", "Transformation", "Infinite List", "Trust The Cosmos", and "Blue Mist". Special package also features a full bonus disc of instrumentals too! CD

Das Goldenes Zeitalter with BajkaVision/Breakin' Through/Im Wuergegriff Der Schoenen Kuenste ... 12-inch
Jazzman (UK), 2006. Near Mint- ... $19.99
A trippy little single from the Das Goldenes Zeitalter – a project that features members of Poets of Rhythm, The Heliocentrics, and The Soul Destroyers – all coming together in a style that really shows off their more righteous side! Bajka joins the group on vocals for "A Vision" – a wonderful extended number that builds with a slow, jazz-based sound – one that layers piano on top of fuzzier guitars – which are themselves brought into play with lightly dancing acoustic percussion and flute! The sound is amazing – almost like something off a lost early 70s soul jazz album – and the tune runs on for over 10 minutes! The flipside features 2 shorter numbers – "Breakin Through" and "Im Wuergegriff Der Schoenen Kuenste" – but both have a similar blend of electric and acoustic instrumentation, often with even funkier results! 12-inch, Vinyl record

✨✧ Du-RitesFunky Bad Time ... LP
Old Maid/Ilegalia, 2021. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A freaky, fuzzy duo – J-Zone on funky drums, keyboards, bass, and guitar – with more guitar and keyboards from Pablo Martin to really send things over the top – giving the group an excellent blend of funk and psych that really lives up to the image on the cover! The sound is maybe somewhere in Malcolm Catto/Heliocentrics territory – but a lot leaner overall, and with a very strong emphasis on the drums – so that the cuts here all bristle with the energy of the group's work on funky 45 – and make the album feel like a stacked-up batch of 7" singles with a nicely trippy edge! Titles include "Jungle", "Mad Dog", "Alfred's Nightmare", "Pigeon Spikes", "A Funky Badd Time", "The San Remo Affair", "Hot N Psycho", and "Can't Buy Groove". LP, Vinyl record album
