Percussionist Phillip Wilson's got his name on the cover, but the set's a very collaborative outing with trumpeter Olu Dara – recorded in Paris by Jef Gilson with a very free-thinking, open style that bridges both American and European modes of free jazz at the time! Wilson plays both a conventional drum kit and assorted percussion instruments – although not a huge range – and Dara brings a real sense of "voice" to the proceedings, both with his phrasing on the trumpet – often in a gritty, "mouthy" mode – and his occasional vocalizations through the horn – both of which evoke the more spiritual currents of the New York scene in the 70s. There's mindblowingly creative spirit to the music throughout – that best Hat Hut sound from the first few years of the label – and titles include "Call Call The So", "Double Click", "The Chad", "Elephant Bossa", "Olu 1", and "Lester 3". Really wonderful live work from the great Horace Silver – some more obscure material that stands as a very nice companion to his Blue Note live album of the mid 60s! The first five tracks on the set features a superb group with Joe Henderson on tenor, and either Carmell Jones or Woody Shaw on trumpet, depending on the tracks – both fantastic players who really bring a sharp edge to the proceedings, and who give the music a slightly different vibe than some of Silver's studio material from the period. Tracks are long, and drums are by Roger Humphries, with bass by Larry Ridley and Teddy Smith – on extended takes of "Que Pasa", "The Natives Are Restless", "Song For My Father", and two versions of "African Queen". The CD has two more tracks recorded at the Cork & Bib club in 1964 – a club out on Long Island – again with Henderson and Shaw, on a 15 minute version of "Tokyo Blues", and a shorter version of "Senor Blues" – both great. A classic live set by Cecil Taylor – easily one of his best-remembered albums of the 70s! The group here is a sextet – with Taylor on piano, Jimmy Lyons on alto, Raphe Malik on trumpet, Ramsey Ameen on violin, Sirone on bass, and Ronald Shannon Jackson on drums – all working together in the collaborative spirit of the loft jazz generation! A CD that brings together some important early work from altoist Marion Brown – two long tracks from the sessions for his Quartet album on ESP – and a later album issued only overseas! The set begins with the long tracks "Capricorn Moon" and "Mephistopheles" from Marion Brown Quartet – one of our favorite albums ever on the legendary ESP label – a rhythmic, soulful, early session by Marion Brown – recorded before his own albums on Impulse, but with a similar feel to the best new thing sessions of that label at the time! The group is superb – with Benny Maupin on sax, Alan Shorter on trumpet, Rashied Ali on drums, and Ronnie Boykins on bass, often playing in tandem with Reggie Johnson – for a unique double-pulsing feel that makes for a nice rhythmic thrust. Next are the tracks "Juba Lee" and "Iditus", from the album Juba Lee – brilliant work from Marion Brown – one of his first albums, and a great set of tracks that have a fragile New York avant style – almost ESP, but not as raw, and with the kind of soulful emotion that's always made Brown's work stand out from the rest of his crowd. The sound of silence, taken to a new level – as John Cage works beautifully here in an illustrative piece inspired by a rock garden in Kyoto! There's a very spacious quality to the piece – instrumentation that really leaves lots of space in between the notes – even though the piece is performed by a sextet that includes Eberhard Blum on flute, Ivewn Hausmann on trombone, Robert Black on bass, Gudrun Reschke on oboe, John Patrick Thomas on voice, and Jan Williams on percussion. The hour-long work builds beautifully – and has this evocative, Eastern-styled vibe that definitely lives up to its inspiration! CD

The compositions of Cornelius Cardew, performed here with a distinctly Chicago inflection – in a relatively recent performance that is partially conducted by Art Lange, and featuring Jim Baker on Arp, Carrio Biolo on vibes, Jeb Bishop on trombone, Fred Lonberg-Holm on cello, and Jeff Parker on guitar. Given the relation of some of the players to Lonberg-Holm's Lightbox Orchestra, there's definitely a similar feel here – a sense of timing and interplay that illuminates Cardew's compositions nicely, in the hands of musicians who can understand the complexities of his work, and make the best of the freedoms he allows them. Titles include "Autumn 60", "Treatise", "Memories Of You", "Material", and "Octet 61 For Jasper Johns". CD

A collection of Ornette Coleman albums from the end of the 60s – work from two key albums, plus some interesting bonus material too! First up is the album Ornette At 12 – a set that features two generations of Ornette Coleman – making incredible music here together! The album's a freewheeling late 60s outing from the senior Ornette – who plays alto, violin, and trumpet here – working with his young son Ornette D Coleman on drums, just 12 years old at the time – but a surprisingly strong free jazz player overall! Heavyweight help comes from Dewey Redman on tenor – really tremendous here, with energy that's up there with Albert Ayler or Archie Shepp at their 60s best – plus Charlie Haden on bass, really coming strongly back into the music at this point in his career. The album's quite free overall – similar to some of Coleman's Blue Note work of the period – and titles include "COD", "Rainbows", "New York", and "Bells and Chimes". Next is Crisis – a record that bursts out with a sound that definitely lives up to its striking title – as Ornette Coleman explores the new frontiers of experimental jazz with one of his great groups from the end of the 60s! The album's got the intensity of the best ESP sessions of the period, but also shows the richer sonic elements that Coleman can bring to the proceedings – that way of mixing sharp edges with surprising currents – delivered by an all-star group that features Ornette on alto and violin, Don Cherry on trumpet and flute, Dewey Redman on tenor and clarinet, Charlie Haden on bass, and the young Ornette D Coleman on drums. It's especially amazing to hear Haden and Cherry take on such different roles than in the Ornette material of the early 60s – and also realize a wider vision for the music, on tunes that include a great version of Haden's "Song For Che", plus "Broken Shadows", "Trouble In The East", and "Space Jungle". The last two tracks are maybe the most unusual – originally issued only as a promo 7" single by Impulse Records, with the tunes "Man On The Moon" and "Growing Up" – recorded with a group that features Cherry on trumpet, Redman on tenor, Haden on bass, and Ed Blackwell on drums – plus electronics from Emmanuel Ghent on one track! A rare live set from guitarist Larry Coryell – working here with his Eleventh House group, a combo that features Mike Lawrence on trumpet, Mike Mandel on keyboards, John Lee on bass, and Alphonse Mouzon on drums! The set begins with a beautiful acoustic solo from Larry, then builds into a more electric mode as things move on – with a burning frenzy that comes especially from Mouzon's drums once they kick into high gear. Titles include "The Eyes Of Love", "Level One", "The Other Side", "Nictophobia", "The Cover Girl", and "That's The Joint". CD

Plenty of Chicago overtones here – thanks to the Windy City setting of the recording, and to contributions from Jeb Bishop on trombone, Kent Kessler on bass, and Robert Barry on drums! Daniele D'Agaro is no stranger to this scene – and his tenor and clarinet are right at home in the lineup – finding free spaces of expression to voice his presence strongly, yet also moving in ways that clearly inspire the other musicians – especially on the more compositional tracks on the set. Titles include variations on the Ellington numbers "Melancholia" and "Sweet Zurzday" – plus "Ultramarine #13", "Chicago Beer Coaster", "Dick's Holler", and "Barry K". CD

A set that features music from three different sessions recorded by trumpeter Bill Dixon in the mid 60s – all pretty groundbreaking work, even all these many years later! First up is a quartet co-led by Archie Shepp and Bill Dixon – easily one of the greatest modern jazz pairings of the 60s! If you only know Shepp from his later work, you'll hear something very different here – as his tenor's often brought into tight focus with the trumpet of Dixon – in a blend of arrangement and freedom that's like that of Ted Curson and Bill Barron, but a lot more powerful overall! The tunes still have a sense of structure – and get great help from the bass of Don Moore and drums of Paul Cohen – but there's also some tremendously unbridled energy from the leaders, especially Dixon, who might not have sounded this great ever again. Titles include "Quartet" and "Trio". Next up is one side of an album that Dixon split with Shepp for Savoy – and Dixon's material here features a septet, with a great lineup that includes Ken McIntyre on alto and oboe, George Barrow on tenor, and both Hal Dodson and David Izenzon on basses. Titles include "Winter Song 1964" and "The 12th December". Last up is the seminal Intents & Purposes record – one of the few rare records cut by Bill Dixon during the 60s, and a perfect example of "new thing" jazz in action. Trumpeter Dixon plays in 3 different ensembles – a nonet, a quintet, and a duet – with players like Byard Lancaster, Reggie Workman, Robert Pozar, and Jimmy Garrison. The tracks are long, with an approach that begins with compositional structures, but which also showcases the avant solo talents of the players – in a manner that's similar to some of the Blue Note work by Anthony Williams or Grachan Moncur III. A darn tough record to find – and with the tracks "Voices", "Nightfall Pieces I & II", and "Metamorphosis". CD

A pair of legendary albums from the mighty Joe Harriott – a player who emigrated to England in the 50s, then set the scene on fire in the following decade! First up is Free Form – the landmark album that forever put saxophonist Joe Harriott on the map, and it's a brilliant batch of tracks that prove that Harriott was advancing the jazz avant garde in England as much as players like Ornette Coleman and Cecil Taylor were advancing it in America. Despite the "free form" of the title, the tracks are more "new thing" – somewhat structured, with a rhythmic approach that's still a little straight, but solos that go nice and outside. Joe's overall conception is a beautiful mix of angular thinking with freely expressed soulful emotion – and the record's one that ranks up there with the 10 most groundbreaking of the 60s! The group's about as fantastic as you could ever expect from England at the time – with Shake Keane on trumpet, Pat Smythe on piano, Coleridge Goode on bass, and Phil Seamen on drums – and titles include "Formation", "Coda", "Abstract", "Straight Lines", and "Impression". Next is Abstract – one of the legendary sets of avant garde jazz by the British alto genius Joe Harriott – an artist who was sometimes billed as the British Ornette Coleman – a reputation he definitely earns with the groundbreaking quality of this album! The conception is bold right from the start – strongly rhythmic, but at a level that's different from Coleman's music – with some deeply emotional undertones to the solos (which also include work from Shake Keane on trumpet!) – and occasional modal elements that also bring in some spiritual elements to work perfect with the breakout solos. The group also features crack rhythm work from Pat Smythe on piano, Coleridge Goode on bass, and Phil Seaman on drums – and the track list includes "Subject", "Shadows", "Tonal", "Oleo", "Pictures", "Idiom", "Compound" and "Modal". Eddie Harris was a hell of a saxophonist, and he was also a hell of an entertainer too – something that didn't always come through on his studio records of the 60s and 70s! This live set features Eddie late in life, but still completely on fire – scatting a very cool intro to the whole performance, then leading a tight group with a lot of warmth – while he also still blows us away with the soul and personality he brings to his solos on tenor. Things are a bit loose on the rhythmic tip, which seems to open up Eddie's horn even more – and the group here features Ronald Muldrow on guitar, Louis Spears on bass, and Albert Tootie Heath on drums. Eddie plays a bit of piano, too – and titles include "Scat", "Song", "There Was A Time", "Lover", and "Softly As In A Morning Sunrise". CD

The set's based on the work of Thelonious Monk – and like Lacy's early Prestige album, Reflections, it features these wonderful angular extrapolations on Monk's modern ideals – really taken to the next level, and in a way that's even more far-reaching than Lacy's previous recordings of Monk. The group here is a key part of the album's strength – with Lacy on soprano sax, Roswell Rudd on trombone, Henry Grimes on bass, and Dennis Charles on drums – and titles include "Bye Ya", "Monk's Mood", "Brilliant Corners", and "Skippy". Insanely beautiful work from the great Joe McPhee – an album that was recorded and intended to be issued during his groundbreaking stretch with Hat Art Records – but which never saw the light of day at the time! Why that happened, we're not entirely sure – because the album is tremendous right from the very first note – as McPhee blows alto, tenor, and pocket cornet alongside the work of Andre Jaume on alto, tenor, and bass clarinet – in a set of horn-only performances that are breathtaking from start to finish! Jaume's a great player too – and his work of the time, especially on Hat Art, is a masterpiece of subtlety and soul – and he balances McPhee perfectly here, often with some deeper currents that create a beautifully organic energy between the two. Jaume's got this way of handling his reed that's amazing – and, of course, Joe's phrasing is as incredible as always. Titles include great reworks of modern jazz classics – including "Pithecanthropus Erectus", "Self Portrait In Three Colors", "Evidence", "Chelsea Bridge", and "Lonely Woman" – plus the originals "Nuclear" and "Rue St Jaume". Beautifully joyous work from Myra Melford – a set recorded early in the career of the pianist, with her first trio – and abristle with sound that really grabs us right from the start! Melford here seems to be working in a level that's maybe as post-Tyner as some of the post-Coltrane saxophonists of the decade before – fully aware of the freedoms of space and motivation of rhythmic pulse, but really finding her own voice too – with a very imaginative trio that features the excellent Reggie Nicholson on drums and some really beautiful bass from Lindsey Horner. There's a resonance between the musicians that's completely captivating – and the bass of Horner seems to bring out something really special in the piano of Melford that we don't always hear in later years. Pure beauty! In October of 1998, Misha Mengelberg made an historic visit to Chicago – a rare trip programmed to coincide with a showcase of Dutch jazz that featured him and the Ab Bars trio, playing at Fred Anderson's legendary Velvet Lounge. The trip was notable in that it also became the occasion for Mengelberg to record some fantastic material – part in the studio (with Kent Kessler, Hamid Drake, Fred Anderson, Fred Lonberg-Holm, and others), part during the live session which transpired on the second day of his trip. This excellent double CD set from Hat Art brings together the recordings, and is a great glimpse into the interplay between the ever-growing Chicago avant scene and the larger legacy of European free jazz! The studio work is pretty darn great, but the real treat is the live set – as Misha plays solo on a few lovely tracks – like "Chicago Solo" and "Round Midnight" – and in a beautiful duet with Ab Bars on tenor, on a haunting reading of "Body & Soul". The set really captures the range of Misha's rich talents – and the inclusion of some jazz standards like "Off Minor" and "Eronel" gives the CD a well-rounded feel. CD

Next up is Scorpio, one of our favorite albums in the legendary run of BYG/Actuel free jazz sessions from 1969, and one of the most obscure as well – one of the few albums as a leader from alto player Arthur Jones, a musician who's really incredible throughout this freewheeling set! The vibe is almost more ESP than BYG – as there's a rhythmic pulse to most of the tracks, provided by Beb Guerin on bass and Claude Delcloo on drums – working with Jones in a mode that really evolves past the saxophone trio style first pushed by Sonny Rollins, with incredible solos from the leader throughout the whole set – which also seem to open up new territory for the alto sax as well! Titles include "CRM", "BT", "Sad Eyes", and "Brother B". CD

A smoking live set from Cannonball Adderley – one recorded in a space between his famous concert albums for Riverside and Capitol Records – and equally as great as any of them! The group's got a slightly unique lineup – in that Charles Lloyd is in the combo on tenor sax – alongside Nat on cornet and Joe Zawinul on piano – really making the most of the long tracks that are carved out perfectly by the group, in a blend of soul jazz and modal styles! Titles include "Jessica's Birthday", "Cajvalach", "Sewing Machine", "The Little Boy With The Sad Eyes", and "Come Sunday". CD

A crucial European performance by Albert Ayler in the mid 60s – one that wasn't issued until many years after the recording, but which has become one of the sharpest pictures of his genius at the time! The vibe here is different than the Ayler albums for ESP – still very much in the same territory, but with this approach that's really reaching out with a deeply spiritual consciousness – an energy to embrace the whole history of jazz, both very old and very new – and re-form its entire ideology into a richly personal expression. Ayler's tremendous on tenor, but Don Ayler is often equally great on trumpet – and the unusual group features Michel Samson on violin, William Fowell on bass, and Beaver Harris on drums. Fantastic material from an important early tour of Europe by the John Coltrane Quartet – tracks recorded in Graz, Austria – and a perfect example of the group as they were really beginning to stretch out and explore! At some level, the vibe here is like the famous first run of Village Vanguard sessions by Coltrane – but the sound shows just how much the players had opened up since the previous year – really tremendous work from the leader on both soprano sax and tenor, McCoy Tyner on piano, Jimmy Garrison on bass, and Elvin Jones on drums! Coltrane's solos are long and freewheeling, with a beautifully exploratory, yet soulful vibe – and titles include "Mr PC", "Every Time We Say Goodbye", "Bye Bye Blackbird", and a great 24 minute take of "My Favorite Things". Tenorist Ellery Eskelin's in a very compelling setting here – a trio that has the great Gerry Hemmingway on drums, and organist Gary Versace on the Hammond B3 – an instrument we're not sure we've ever heard on any other records from Ellery! Yet the set's hardly a conventional version of tenor and organ jazz – as the Hammond's often used in ways that are a sonically creative as Eskelin's approach to tenor, with waves of sound that are often far beyond music, but which also can hit some tuneful moments as well – all over the course of songs that are familiar, but which are completely transformed by the process! The group does hit a slightly soulful vibe on a reading of "I Don't Stand A Ghost Of A Chance Without You", but really takes off on versions of "We See", "East Of The Sun", "Blue & Sentimental", and "My Melancholy Baby" – as well as their own "On Or About". A pair of legendary albums from the mighty Joe Harriott – a player who emigrated to England in the 50s, then set the scene on fire in the following decade! First up is Free Form – the landmark album that forever put saxophonist Joe Harriott on the map, and it's a brilliant batch of tracks that prove that Harriott was advancing the jazz avant garde in England as much as players like Ornette Coleman and Cecil Taylor were advancing it in America. Despite the "free form" of the title, the tracks are more "new thing" – somewhat structured, with a rhythmic approach that's still a little straight, but solos that go nice and outside. Joe's overall conception is a beautiful mix of angular thinking with freely expressed soulful emotion – and the record's one that ranks up there with the 10 most groundbreaking of the 60s! The group's about as fantastic as you could ever expect from England at the time – with Shake Keane on trumpet, Pat Smythe on piano, Coleridge Goode on bass, and Phil Seamen on drums – and titles include "Formation", "Coda", "Abstract", "Straight Lines", and "Impression". Next is Abstract – one of the legendary sets of avant garde jazz by the British alto genius Joe Harriott – an artist who was sometimes billed as the British Ornette Coleman – a reputation he definitely earns with the groundbreaking quality of this album! The conception is bold right from the start – strongly rhythmic, but at a level that's different from Coleman's music – with some deeply emotional undertones to the solos (which also include work from Shake Keane on trumpet!) – and occasional modal elements that also bring in some spiritual elements to work perfect with the breakout solos. The group also features crack rhythm work from Pat Smythe on piano, Coleridge Goode on bass, and Phil Seaman on drums – and the track list includes "Subject", "Shadows", "Tonal", "Oleo", "Pictures", "Idiom", "Compound" and "Modal". A pair of rare albums from reedman Noah Howard – back to back in a single set! First up is the Noah Howard Quartet album from 1966 – one of the most obscure albums on the ESP label in the 60s – and a brilliant early chapter in the career of reedman Noah Howard! Howard is maybe best known for his contributions to the European scene from the end of the 60s into the 70s – but here, he's already a stunning giant on the New York scene – blowing alto with a sound that's very much all his own, and which makes his performance here as both a soloist and leader a key part of the early ESP label legacy. The group is piano-less – a unique ensemble with Ric Colbeck on trumpet, Scotty Holt on bass, and Dave Grant on percussion – all unknown players, but great partners for Howard on the record – on titles that include "Henry's Street", "Apotheosis", "Apotheosis Extension I", and "And About Love". At Judson Hall features a brilliant live performance from the young Noah Howard – working here at a level that's very much on the most spiritual side of the ESP label spectrum, and which also shows the new level of inventive group structures that were coming into play on the New York scene at the time! The record's got a sense of soulful structure and individual freedom that's a bit like the classics of Archie Shepp at the time – as Howard blows alto alongside trumpeter Ric Colbeck, an unusual player who was also on his quartet studio session for the label. A young Dave Burrell makes a great appearance on piano, alongside the bass of Sirone, cello of Catherine Norris, and percussion of Bobby Kapp – as the group make their way through two side-long tracks, "This Place Called Earth" and "Homage To Coltrane". One of the best Steve Lacy albums from the 80s – a really strong live performance with a definite Monkish approach, served up in a really no-nonsense way! The group's just a quartet – with Lacy on soprano sax, Steve Potts on alto and soprano, Jean-Jacques Avenel on bass, and Oliver Johnson on drums – and the group's in perfect formation in a comfortable Paris setting – working with angular energy and a great sense of timing, and never falling into some of the tricks or gimmicks that could mar other Lacy records from the time. Steve's still razor-sharp at this point in his career, and Potts is, as always, a tremendous partner – and titles include "Morning Joy", "Prospectus", "Epistrophy", "As Usual", and "In Walked Bud". The "Sunrise" in the title here is especially well-placed – because this live performance by Sun Ra has a beautifully glowing quality – one that unfolds musically as the set rolls on, moving through a day's course of music in different moods and dimensions! Ra initiates the proceedings with some gentler inside piano, but as the set gets moving, the other group members leap into the fray – pushing a tremendous energy into some of Ra's original compositions – then stepping back for a more peaceful, contemplative exploration of older themes in jazz – played in that "across the 20th century" mode that took hold of The Arkestra strongly during this decade. Group members here include Marshall Allen, John Gilmore, Noel Scott, Michael Ray, and Danny Thomas – and the concert is very well recorded, with numbers that include "Cocktails For Two", "Lightnin", "Light From A Hidden Sun", "Pin Points Of Spiral Prisms", "Silhouettes Of The Shadow World", "Queer Notions", "Big John's Special", and "A Helio-Hello & Goodbye Too". An incredible juxtaposition of the music of Karlheinz Stockhausen and Ludwig Von Beethoven – not interwoven, as in Stockhausen's famous Kurzwellen Mit Beethoven – but offered up side by side, and played beautifully by pianist Pi Hsien Chen! The CD begins with four "Klavierstuck" pieces by Stockhausen, all relatively short, but extremly bold in the way they mix movement with silence – an approach that is then offset by beautiful sounds from Beethoven's "Piano Sonata Op 101" – in four longish movements with a very lyrical feel, but sometimes the same sort of striking elements as Stockhausen's work. "Klavierstuck 5" follows – a longer variation, with very moody, elegiac passages – then followed by the longer Beethoven "Piano Sonata Op 111", before the CD concludes with the 20 minute "Klavierstuck 6". Pure genius from Horace Tapscott – a record that really lights a new fire under his talents – and takes us back to some of the most expressive, most righteous jazz from the LA scene of the 70s! The quartet here features key LA player John Carter on clarinet – an instrument that he'd embraced heavily during the decade in which this set was recorded, but managed to use with a sense of boldness and fire brought to earlier work on saxes – a sound that's quite different than just about any other player on the instrument! Carter's a perfect match for Tapscott's long-woven lines on piano – heard to great effect on the album's reworking of his classic "Dark Tree" – but cast out perfectly on all the other tunes too – thanks in part to tremendous rhythm work from Cecil McBee on bass and Andrew Cyrille on drums! The set's brilliant all the way through – one of the greatest things Hat Art ever recorded – and a record to rival any of the great indie underground sets of the 70s. Titles include "One For Lately", "The Dark Tree", "Sketches Of Drunken Mary", "Lino's Pad", "Sandy & Niles", "A Dress For Renee", and "Nyja's Theme". CD

The first half of Cecil Taylor's wonderful Garden performance – a key moment from the early 80s that really seems to show Taylor finding even more focus than ever, while also setting his spirit freer than anyone might have imagined! The man and his piano become one during the performance – on long-spun tracks that have these mad flurries of notes that shouldn't make sense, but totally do – maybe even freer than Taylor was in the 70s, but at a level that creates even more musical inspiration too – a musicality that's almost unexpected, and which leaves us breathless. Cecil also vocalizes a bit – these chant-like grunts that really show the full body fixation of the performance – and titles include "Elell", "Garden 1", and "Stepping On Stars". CD

An important early record from the Thing trio of reedman Mats Gustafsson – and one that already has the group taking off from their initial mandate of working with Don Cherry material, as Joe McPhee joins the group and really opens up their sound! McPhee echoes a bit of Cherry on pocket trumpet, but the performance is definitely in his own mode, and that special sonic space of Gustafsson at the turn of the century – as Mats plays tenor and baritone saxes, alongside Ingebrigt Haker Flaten on bass and Paal Nilssen Love on drums! The core trio would go onto greatness in years to come, and this is one of their key early statements – with titles that include versions of Don Cherry's "The Thing", Ornette Coleman's "Kathelin Gray", and Frank Lowe's "For Real" – plus the tracks "To Bring You My Love", "Going Home", and "Old Eyes". Early brilliance from tenor genius David S Ware – one of the first records issued under his own name as a leader, and maybe still one of the greatest too! The album has Ware working with the Apogee trio of Cooper Moore on piano and Marc Edwards on drums – in these long-blown lines that are an immediate inheritance of the late legacy of John Coltrane – played in that searing, searching style of Coltrane's final years – but maybe given even more depth and directly here by David! Ware's approach is wonderful throughout – always soulful and meaningful, even in the most abstract moments – very fully-formed, and still completely tremendous after all these years. Titles include "Prayer", "Thematic Womb", and "Primary Piece #1". First-ever reissue – with lots of bonus tracks that include "Solo", "Prayer", "Cry", "Stop Time", and "Ashimba". CD

A great follow-up to the initial News For Lulu project – a late 80s reinvention of the sound of Blue Note, handled by this trio of key modernists from the time! As proven by recordings like this over the years, John Zorn's a player who – despite his own very modern and avant tendencies – has a great respect for older jazz traditions, and a strong ability to bring them into his music – even if the connections aren't always that obvious! Here, the link is explicit – in the album's choice of tunes by Hank Mobley, Sonny Clark, Kenny Dorham, and Freddie Redd – all Blue Note legends from the hardbop generation, providing core elements that are completely reworked into modern showcases for the alto of Zorn, guitar of Bill Frisell, and trombone of George Lewis. Lewis' presence is especially great – a rhythmic pulse and sense of depth that really grounds the session nicely. The CD features material from two live performances – and titles include "Melody For C", "News For Lulu", "Funk In Deep Freeze", "Hank's Other Tune", and "Peckin Time". CD
