Fiercely funky Freddie Hubbard – a late 70s live date, but one that has the same bold power as his early 70s albums for CTI! Like those classics, the tracks here are all quite long – and served up in this beautifully flowing mix of acoustic and electric elements – Freddie on trumpet, Hadley Caliman on tenor and flute, Billy Child on piano and keyboards, Larry Klein on bass, and Carl Burnett – a group that works together so beautifully in the live environment, you'd think their performance was the process of multiple takes! We love the spiritual energy that Hubbard can get in such a setting – and most of the record stretches out with very long tracks, including two that go past the 20 minute mark. Tracks are long and modal – that groove that always seems to unlock the most soulful, mystical currents in Sanders' tenor – and the group is superb, with this beautiful work on bass from the young Curtis Lundy, plus John Hicks on piano and Idris Muhammad on drums – the latter of whom is in that looser mode he reopened in the 80s, and very different than his 70s funk years. Tracks are all nice and long – and titles include "Dr Pitt", "Greetings To Idris", "You Gotta Have Freedom", "It's Easy To Remember", and "The Creator Has A Masterplan". CD

Bop, ballads, and lots more too – played by reedman Lucky Thompson at a time when he was really picking up some new ideas on the European scene! As with contemporaries like Sonny Criss or Benny Bailey, Thompson was great before he hit the continent – but then came back from Europe a completely changed man – a musician whose sense of expression had evolved strongly in a very short time – to a point where the music on these recordings from 1959 and 1960 is quite different than his American records from a few short years before! Part of the change might come from pianist Michael Naura – who's on all these sides, and is one of the hippest cats working in Germany at the time – but you can already hear Lucky opening up his tone and his inflections, especially on the numbers that feature soprano sax. Other players include Jimmy Gourley on guitar, Hans Koller on tenor, and the great Wolfgang Schulter on vibes – on titles that include "The World Awakes", "Brother Bob", "Yesterdays", "Deep Passion", "Thin Ice", and "Summertime". Fantastic work by this excellent 70s combo – a quintet whose leaders recorded famously with Horace Silver in the 60s, then took his inspiration to very different spiritual territory on their own! Both drummer Louis Hayes and tenorist Junior Cook are fantastic – but the whole group here is completely sublime – with Woody Shaw on trumpet, Ronnie Matthews on piano, and the great Stafford James on bass – a really rich player who gives the album a whole lot of depth – whether things are swinging straight, or taking off in new spiritual dimensions! The combo handles both modes wonderfully – and the long, open space of the live recording has Cook and Shaw turning out some very soulful standard solos, then soaring to the skies on some of the hipper numbers. All tracks are over ten minutes long – some much longer than that – and titles include "Moment To Moment", "Moontrane", "Ichi Ban", "All The Things You Are", "Four For Nothing", "Pannonica", and "When Sunny Gets Blue". Full-on power from drummer Elvin Jones – really opening up here on the kind of super-extended live tracks that he only ever seemed to record overseas! The concert has Jones leading a fantastic group – with twin saxes from Carter Jefferson and Duane Armstrong, bold piano from Fumio Karashima, guitar from Marvin Horne, and bass from Andy McCloud – a lineup that's even more boldly expressive than some of Jones' groups of the late 70s – as they work through many very long tracks that seem to give everyone plenty of individual solo space! A tremendous lost chapter in the career of guitar genius Wes Montgomery – material recorded in Germany in the mid 60s – complete with backings by a large group who give the whole thing a vibe that's a bit like some of the charts that Oliver Nelson would score for Wes on Verve! The recording quality is great, and the tracks really stretch out beautifully – with some arrangements by Wes, and others by saxophonists Johnny Griffin and Ronnie Ross – who both play on the record as well! The setting is live, tracks are long, and Montgomery seems to have even more bite than on some of his studio recordings – on titles that include "Four On Six", "Last Of The Wine", "Leopard Walks", "Blue Grass", "Opening 2", and "West Coast Blues". One of the most ambitious albums ever from the Globe Unity Orchestra – a set that not only features work from some of the key free jazz musicians you'd usually find on their records, but also the choir of the NDR Orchestra – who make all these amazing vocalizations next to the equally amazing sounds from the musicians! As with other outings, the group is led by pianist Alexander Von Schlippenbach – who's clearly outdone himself here, and who must have been completely worn out by the end of the performance – as he does a masterful effort directing the vocalists alongside a top-shelf lineup that includes Manfred Schoof and Kenny Wheeler on trumpets, Cunter Christmann and Paul Rutherford on trombones, Peter Brotzmann and Evan Parker on reeds, and Han Bennink and Paul Lovens on drums. The album features two extremely long tracks entitled "Hamburg 74" and "Kontraste Und Synthesen". LP, Vinyl record album

A massive package of work from Bedlam – an early project from drummer Cozy Powell, and one with a legacy that's surprisingly bigger than the single album they issued back in the day! The first 2CDs feature both a new mix and 1973 mix of the self-titled Bedlam album – a searing set that stands as a great bridge between generations and styles on the UK hard rock scene! The group's most famous member is drummer Cozy Powell – the ersatz leader of the lineup – but the whole combo hits on all burners, with great lead vocals from Frank Aiello, guitar from Dave Ball, and bass from Dennis Ball – plus keyboards on the set from both Max Middleton and Felix Pappalardi – the latter of whom produced. Powell's drums are fantastic throughout – really driving the whole thing along – and Aiello comes across like some lost lead act from the glory days of the arena scene. The set features one killer break track called "Seven Long Years" – a stone jammer that begins with some great drums that break nicely into guitars – and other titles include "Believe In You", "Hot Lips", "Sweet Sister Mary", "Putting On The Flesh", "Set Me Free", and "The Beast". CD3 features a Live In London set from 1973; CD4 features a Live in New York set from 1974; CD5 features a related Big Bertha Live In Hamburg set from 1970; and CD6 features 16 more formative tracks from 1968 to 1970, recorded as Bedlam, Ace Kefford Stand, Big Bertha, and Ideal Milk. A tri-lingual set from this very compelling soul singer – a set mostly done in English, but with work in Darija and German, the latter of which reflects her adopted home in Hamburg. Some of the best cuts here are nice and mellow, with Douniah's vocals crackling gently next to the keyboards and warmer electronics – and the set's got this quietly cosmic vibe that's mighty nice, and very different both from so much other contemporary work, and other projects on the Melting Pot label. A Japanese book about Krautrock, but one that's laid out like a discography – so that you can understand it even if you can't read the language! All the artist and album information is in English (or German) – and every entry has a vivid full color photo, so that you can hundreds and hundreds of records that have gone onto make up the Krautrock genre as it's evolved over the years – following the music through key years of the 70s, and its evolution on the German scene as the 80s moved on – with slight side-trips into post-punk and industrial too. Chapters focus on artists or scenes – including Can, Kraftwerk, Neu, Hamburg, Faust, Die Krupps, Munchen, Embryo, Der Plan, Pyrolator, and lots more – dozens of other chapters that really lay out a wonderfully vivid picture of the music. The book is over 300 pages, with images of hundreds of records throughout! Book

Raw early Beatles – recorded in Hamburg at the beginning of the 60s when they were backing up singer Tony Sheridan – surprisingly well-preserved recordings, assuming that no one knew that this little backing band was going to take over the entire pop music world in a few years! We actually really dig the stripped-down, fairly rudimentary, though nicely rollicking Beatles instrumentation here – with charismatic vocals by Sheridan as well as some nice early Beatles compositions and vocals. The original release of this material may have been a post-breakout cash grab, but the music holds up really well and it's very much worthy! Live duets between Ella Fitzgerald and guitarist Joe Pass – done in the same stripped-down style as their studio albums for Pablo! The pairing of talents is quite unique – and makes for some of the most compelling Fitzgerald material you'll hear from the time – really open, free tracks that have Ella pushing things even more than usual – an incredible demonstration of her rich talents, which were sometimes lost amidst more conventional record dates. Pass has a clear, clean tone that's mighty nice – and the record brings together material recorded in Tokyo and Hamburg, with titles that include "One Note Samba", "Bluesette", "Old Folks", "Wave", "Mood Indigo", "Take Love Easy", "Satin Doll", and "Gone With The Wind". Nice bit of funky fusion from these 2 German brothers. Rolf plays electric clarinet on this session, and it sounds nice and sharp next to his brother's organ and alto solos. Volker Kreigel's playing guitar, and at this point, he's still playing with a lot of tightness, and less of the rock-like playing that marred some of his later work. The set was recorded in Hamburg, in 1968, and released in the 70's by Claude Delcloo on one of his French labels. Rare live work by Wes Montgomery – 2 sets from 1965, both with different groups, and both a lot harder-hitting than Wes' studio albums from the time! The first 4 tracks were recorded in New York, at the Half Note, with a quartet that features Harold Mabern on piano, Art Harper on bass, and Jimmy Lovelace on drums. The last 4 were recorded about 6 months later, in Hamburg, Germany, with a European rhythm section that features Martial Solal, Michel Gaudry, and Ronnie Stephenson. Tracks are all pretty long, and titles include "Bleu Monk", "Four On Six", "Twisted Blues", "Round Midnight", and "Caravan". CD

If you find the image on the cover as striking as we do, wait until you see what's inside – page after page of brilliant black and white photographs, all taken from the long-running Hamburger Eyes publication – still somewhat young when this book came out, but already clearly a leading voice in 21st Century photography! The images vary wildly, but they all have a unifying vibe – material by a range of different photographers who seem to capture a special moment on the street, or an oddity in reality – keen work by a lineup that includes Mark Murrmann, Ryan Furtado, Matt Weber, Ted Pushinsky, Boogie, Vic Blue, and many others – a band of disparate artist who seem to have a great unifying thread in their work. The book is lovingly done in the best tradition of Powerhouse Press – hardcover, very little text, just page after page of explosive images! Book

Arthur Lee left his group Love behind for this early 70s debut as a solo act – but the record also seems to have Lee returning to some of the heavier blues-inspired sounds of that group's early years too! Lee is a monster here in the spotlight – fantastic guitar lines effortlessly flying from his fingers, vocal power that's more varied and dynamic than some of his later Love performances, and a sense of occasional wit that's echoed by the cover. Arthur also wrote, produced, and arranged the whole thing – which was recorded in Hollywood with help from some of his friends – on titles that include "Hamburger Breath Stinkfinger", "He Knows A Lot of Good Women", "You Can Save Up To 50% But You're Still A Long Ways From Home", "He Said She Said", "Love Jumped Through My Window", "Everybody's Gotta Live", and "You Want Change For Your Rerun". A wonderful album of southern soul – and the only full-length LP cut by Bobby Moore and his long-lived Rhythm Aces combo! The group's the sort that slaved away endlessly in live shows all over the south – playing on their own, or providing extra backup for countless big stars touring through the area. Bobby's on tenor, and the group has some incredibly rich vocal talents – unnamed, but with a group harmony style that's equally at home with sweet ballads or hard stompin party numbers. The latter style is the band's strongest suit, though – with an approach that's somewhere between the hard soul of Sam & Dave and the party grooves of Doug Clark & The Hot Nuts – and like that group, Moore's style was probably forged out of years of playing at beach dances, frat parties, and bar gigs, the real proving ground for a tight combo like this! A great little LP, with a fresh sound throughout – and tracks include "The Hamburger Song", "Follow Me", "Hey, Mr. DJ", "Searching For My Love", "Jenny, Jenny", "Come Back Baby", and "We've Got That". The tunes here are all from the vaults of Redington – and feature cool little tunes written for Coca Cola, Sprite, Canada Dry, Gino's, Minute Maid, and a number of other big brands in the 70s – some spare with just Ginny on vocals and a bit of keyboards, some with a fuller, richer style that uses more instrumentation and additional singers!
