Golden GateYear One (yellow vinyl pressing) ... LP
Audio Fidelity/Culture Factory, 1969. New Copy (reissue)... $14.99 29.99
Tripped-out sunshine pop from the end of the 60s – the only outing ever from The Golden Gate, a group put together by the team of Billy Carlucci and Reid Whitelaw, who were probably best known for their bubblegum pop work over at Kama Sutra! The sound of this one's quite deeper than any simple pop, though – much headier stuff that clearly draws from the best post-Smile Beach Boys years, and the offbeat Four Seasons experiments of the time – fusing older east coast harmony styles onto a more expansive, ambitious instrumental groove, with really sublime results! Although quite unknown, the album's a true late 60s Sunshine treasure – one that's well worth tracking down, and filled with killer cuts that include "Contrary To Mary", "Ready Willing & Able", "High On A Melody", "Monday After Sunday", and "Diane". Tony BennettWho Can I Turn To ... LP
Columbia, 1964. Sealed ... $14.99
A 60s classic from Tony Bennett – a record that sported a huge title hit, but which also stands strongly as a really unified album! Tony's at his maturing best here – still working with core jazz inspiration from the Ralph Sharon Trio, but also getting fuller strings from George Siravo – who colors in the tunes with a sense of adult emotion and sophisticated melancholy that shows that Bennett's way more than just a simple singer of hits. The material here is all pretty darn great – with a strong jazz influence on tunes like "Autumn Leaves", "Waltz For Debby", "Wrap Your Troubles In Dreams", and "Got The Gate On The Golden Gate" – and more deeply sensitive style on "Who Can I Turn To", "Listen Little Girl", and "There's A Lull In My Life". Fremeaux & Associates (France), Late 1930s/1940s/1950s/Early 1960s. New Copy 3CD ... $19.99 28.99
Not just a collection of doo wop recordings, but a huge set that instead traces the development of vocal harmony styles from the 30s through the early 60s – starting at a time when jazz-based groups were adding hip new modes to older styles of singing together, through an era when R&B really helped the vocals take flight, to a period when street corner vocalizing was giving birth to a generation of fantastic young acts! The set features a massive 72 tracks over the course of the 3CDs within, all in chronological order, with notes in English and French – and work from groups who include The Nutmegs, Velvets, Keith & Enid, Pharoahs, Robins, Platters, Chips, Earls, Regents, Marcels, Orioles, Golden Gate Jubilee Quintet, Dominoes, Ravens, Ink Spots, Delta Rhythm Boys, Mellows, Bobbettes, Miracles, and many others! Dave Brubeck takes on the Eurasian scene – with wonderfully groovy results! The album's one of Brubeck's first in the "impressions" series, and it's a really colorful assortment of tunes – tracks with some lyrical and exotic moments that come through strongly, and which really offer a slightly different take on the Brubeck groove. Paul Desmond's alto sax is key to the sound here, and so is the progressive percussion of Joe Morello – and in addition to Brubeck's piano, the quartet also features bass from Joe Benjamin. Titles are all originals by Dave, and they include "Calcutta Blues", "Marble Arch", "Brandenburg Gate", "Nomad", and "The Golden Horn". CD

Grapefruit (UK), Late 1960s/Early 1970s. New Copy 3CDs ... Out Of Stock
A massive collection of music from one of the grooviest periods in popular music – the late 60s rise of super-catchy pop that became known as bubblegum – usually cooked up by young studio geniuses and up-and-coming songwriters who were eager for a hit! The genre was sometimes derided at the time – in part because some of the groups were just studio projects without a life out in the real world – but history has shown that the music has a heck of a lot of staying power, especially when brought together in a big package like this – which really lets you dive in deep, as if you've suddenly tuned in an AM radio station from 1971! As with other Grapefruit packages, the presentation is wonderful – detailed notes on all the artists within, and a huge set list that features 91 tracks in all – a great mix of big hits and lesser-known gems – with work by Brian Hyland, Third Rail, Paul Revere & The Raiders, The Archies, Shadows Of Knight, John Fred & His Playboy Band, 1910 Fruitgum Co, The Monkees, Patty Flabbie's Coughed Engine, Orange Colored Sky, The Knack, Mortimer, The Pineapple Heard, Bruce Channel, San Francisco Earthquake, Merrell Fankhauser, The Golden Gate, Crazy Elephant, The Love Generation, Culver Street Playground, Everyday Hudson, and many others. The vibe is similar to his Closeness album, but maybe a bit more relaxed and open – and the set has many wonderful moments – as Don Cherry plays trumpet and flutes on "Out Of Focus", Archie Shepp plays tenor on "Shepp's Way", Hampton Hawes plays piano on "Turnaround", and Ornette Coleman plays trumpet on the beautiful title track "Golden Number". Iron Mountain Analog Research (Australia), Late 50s/1960s/Early 70s. New Copy Gatefold ... $13.99 34.99
A set that's heavy on the kind of country artists who often made key appearances on TV in the 60s – artists who were as much visual showfolks as they were singers – with an illuminating quality that really holds through in their recordings, even if you can't see their images on the screen! The cuts here often have a very animated, well-presented approach – especially on some of the numbers that require a slight current of drama or wit to send the lyric home! The package features 18 titles in all – and tracks include "A Million Years Or So" by Roger Miller, "The Good Lord Giveth" by Webb Pierce, "I Am The Grass" by The Stonemans, "Wino" by Porter Wagoner, "I Wouldn't Buy A Used Car From Him" by Norma Jean, "I Could Have Gone Right" by Mel Tillis, "Oriental Twist" by Pete Drake, and "Loser's Cocktail" by Dick Curless. Flying Dutchman, 1976. Very Good+ Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Lonnie Liston Smith grooves it hard here with his Cosmic Echoes group – mixing in a stronger dose of soul than ever before, yet still giving tracks a righteous feel overall! The approach here is a bit like that of Roy Ayers work from the 70s – still jazzy at its core and conception, but often featuring vocals to deliver a wider message for the tunes – plus some nicely snapping rhythms that are enough to get a fe cuts good play on the dancefloor! The record's still got plenty of great mellow tracks too, though – the kind of floating spacey numbers that Smith virtually invented during the 70s, and which stand here as a more strongly jazz-voiced contrast to some of the soul tunes in the set. Donald Smith and Dave Hubbard are still working here with Lonnie to give the work a really solid sound, and tracks include groovers like "Get Down Everybody", "Peace & Love", and "Beautiful Woman" – mixed with spacier fusion numbers like "Quiet Dawn", "Golden Dreams", and "Goddess Of Love". A group with a name that might not easily roll of the tongue, but one who've got a sublime harmony sound that's wonderfully fluid overall – a combination of nine young voices from the scene in Soweto, working without any other instrumentation at all! The combination of vocals almost takes us back to the sound of Take 6 on their first album – and as with that group, the message here is spiritual, but not entirely pointed at the church – with much more of a universal appeal that's perfect for the subtly righteous power of the harmonies! ✨✧ King PleasureSource (Original Moody's Mood/Golden Days) ... LP
Prestige, Early 50s. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
An important set that documents a nice patch of King's early vocalese jazz sides – pivotal vocal jazz recordings that were not only enormously popular with listeners around the country, but which also did a heck of a lot in the way of advancing the way that male singers handled lead vocals on jazz-based tunes! The first album's pulled from his Original Moody's Mood For Love set for Prestige, which was itself a compilation and features "I'm In The Mood For Love", "Red Top", "Jumpin With Symphony Sid", "I'm Gone", "Funk Junction", "You're Crying", "Don't Get Scared", "This Is Always', and "Exclamation Blues". The second LP's the hard to find Goldne Days set, a beautiful record, and still one of the greatest jazz vocal albums ever made. The great King Pleasure sings in a raspy vocalese style similar to Jon Hendricks or Eddie Jefferson, but with a sense of warmth and delivery that the two of them never seem to reach. The set list here features a stellar batch of tracks with lyrics by Pleasure, including "The New Symphony Sid", "No, Not Much", "Parker's Mood", and "Golden Days". There's some great accompaniment by LA hard bop players like Teddy Edwards, Gerald Wiggins, and Harold Land, and the whole set sparkles with imagination and warmth. 21 tracks in all. Now Again, 1970s. Near Mint- 3LPs ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A truly incredible overview of 70s Indonesian funk, rock and psychedelia infused recordings – and it's beautifully put together, to boot – one of the very best compilations yet from Stones Throw's Now Again branch! There's an undercurrent of funk to most of this material, but it's always topped off with prog & psych rhythmic heaviness and dexterity, and usually done with passionate, feverish vocals. Great early 70s work from Herbie Mann! By this point in his career, Herbie must have had a fleet of cars, a harem of ladies, and a golden flute. The music of Kip Hanrahan never fails to amaze us – and he's one of the few people out there who can put together so much, then end up coming up with something that's way more than the sum of its parts! The set continues the fantastic American Clave legacy of previous albums from Kip – mixing together jazz, Latin roots, vocal poetry, and so many other great elements – all served up with all-star help from a huge array of players sympathetic to Hanrahan's vision! As with his other records, there's way more folks here than we can mention easily – but some key talents include Chico Freeman and Craig Handy on tenors, Milton Cardona and Steve Berrios on percussion, Mario Rivera on baritone, Steve Swallow on bass, and Brandon Ross on guitar – next to vocals from Jack Bruce, Lucia Ameen, Grayson Hugh, Xiomara Laugart, and other singers too. One of Wes Montgomery's grooviest albums on Verve – a set that features his smooth chromatic work on guitar set to lively arrangements from Oliver Nelson! Nelson gives the set more of a "punch" than some of Montgomery's other Verve records – and the style uses a tight brace of brass and woodwinds as the backdrop for Montgomery's moody solo work. The tracks have a nice edgey quality, but also maintain a smooth stepping quality as well – and Wes' tone, as always, is sublime! Sun RaIn The Orbit Of Ra ... LP
Strut (UK), 1960s/1970s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $30.99 32.99
A really wonderfully-done collection of work from the legendary Sun Ra – put together by longtime musical partner Marshall Allen, and way way different than the typical mish-mash of tracks you'd find on some of the budget or public domain titles on the market! First off, the track selection is really thoughtful – music that definitely defines the Arkestra in the 60s and 70s, but which also highlights some of its overlooked corners too – pulled together from recordings that appeared on the Saturn, Impulse, and other labels – all curated and remastered by Art Yard, who've done their share of great Ra reissues over the years. Plus, the package features a few unreleased performances as well – and although it would serve as a great introduction to the music of Sun Ra, it's also really perfectly put together for longtime Ra fans as well – given the focus, track selection, and overall quality of the whole thing. The sounds are sublime – maybe one of the best summations of the righteous, cosmic genius of the Arkestra at its best – and titles include "Reflects Motion", "Island In The Sun (extended)", "Somewhere In Space", "The Lady With The Golden Stockings", "Somebody Else's World", "Ancient Aethiopia", "Astro Black", "Have You Heard The Latest News From Neptune", "We Travel The Spaceways", and "Plutonian Nights". Sunmuse/BBE (UK), 1983. Sealed 3LP Gatefold ... $19.99 24.99
Really beautiful sounds from bassist David Wertman – an unsung hero of the late 70s spiritual jazz scene around New England, and one who delivers this gem in close partnership with singer Lynne Meryl! Meryl's got this warm, fluid style that's a lot like the way that some of the better Bay Area groups were using jazz vocals a few years before – a mode inspired by overseas singers like Flora Purim or Urzula Dudziak, but used here alongside soulful instrumentation that draws a lot from the more inside currents of the loft jazz scene! Wertman's bass is at the core, and tremendous throughout – full of fire and force, and sometimes matched with a bit of percussion – a musical force that's handled here more fully by Tony Vacca, who employs a range of instruments – next to piano and prepared piano from Tom McClung, and these strong trombone solos from Tim Atherton – a player who really sends the whole thing over the top with his contributions! Most tracks have a great modal groove – and titles include "Forest Dance", "Camel", "Flute Song", "New Earth", "Sing My Love Song", and "Dance Of The Mideast Madness". This expanded edition brings in more rare cuts from other releases – eight bonus tracks that include "How Come", "Up In The Sky", "Sci Fi Fantasy", "Blessing Of Love", "Golden Light", and "You Are My Love". VariousI'm Glad About It – The Legacy Of Gospel Music In Louisville ... LP
Louisville Story Project, Late 1950s/1960s/1970s/Early 1980s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $33.99 39.99
An amazing look at a sometimes-overlooked scene in the world of gospel music – the upsurge of strong local talent on the stages and churches of Louisville, Kentucky – a key border city between the north and the south, especially during the Civil Rights years in which much of this music was recorded! Louisville has always been a really compelling crossroads – and while most folks think of punk bands and post-rock when thinking of the city, the scene actually has a much larger legacy in African American styles – including soul, funk, and jazz – which all seem to echo in the gospel work within! The set is meticulously done – with a superb selection of rare 45s that we'd never have heard otherwise, all dripping with the kind of deep soul vocals and sharp instrumentation you might expect. Titles include "Let Me Lean On You" by The Religious Five Quartet, "Been Dipped In Water" by The Guiding Stars, "He's All Right" by Green Street Baptist Church Youth Choir, "Thank You Jesus" by Indiana Wonders, "I Feel Like Pressing My Way" by Joe Thomas, "He Knows It All" by Rev Thomas N Pride, "Calvary" by Newburg Radio Chorus, "My Time Ain't Long" by God's Girls, "We Are Trying" by The Golden Crowns, and "He Made A Way For Me" by The Ecclesiastics. 2LP version features 26 tracks in all – in a heavy cover with a great set of notes! LP, Vinyl record album
(Includes a full color insert with photos and extensive liner notes on the immense legacy of Louisville gospel!)

Stax, 1973. Sealed 2LP Gatefold ... $11.99 14.99
A second set of material issued in celebration of the legendary Wattstax concert by Stax Records in LA in 1972 – and a set that mostly features material from the famous show at the Los Angeles Coliseum, but also includes some sly studio material that was pumped up with applause to fit nicely into the mix! Richard Pryor acts as the MC – although his tracks weren't recorded at the actual concert – and as with the original album, there's a mixture of some self-contained "show" passages here, plus individual songs by other artists too! David Porter delivers a mighty batch of tracks that include "Reach Out & Touch", "Ain't That Loving You", and "Can't See You When I Want To" – followed by a Johnnie Taylor show that includes "Steal Away", "Stop Doggin Me", and "Jody's Got Your Girl & Gone". Other live material includes work by Rance Allen Group, Kim Weston, Jimmy Jones, and The Golden 13 – augmented by additional cuts from The Emotions, Mel & Tim, and Little Milton too! VariousWonder Of Stevie 3 – Presented By DJ Spinna ... LP
BBE (UK), 1970s/2016. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $22.99 29.99
An incredible collection of Stevie Wonder cover versions – different versions of familiar tunes, but ones that really manage to sparkle with all the righteous soul of the Stevie himself! It's been over a decade since DJ Spinna brought us the last version of his Wonder Of Stevie series – and during that time, he's managed to come up with a huge amount of great tracks that make the whole thing go way way deeper than before – not just cuts that copy the Wonder mode, but which seem to draw strong inspiration from its genius, and really soar to the skies! Much of the music here resonates with a charm that's located around the years of albums like Music Of My Mind and Innervisions, with all the jazzy currents that might imply – and some cuts are 70s vintage, others are more contemporary. Titles include "Bird Of Beauty" by US Atlantic First Navy Show Band, "It's My Pleasure" by Billy Preston, "Love's In Need Of Love Today" by John Minnis Big Bone Band, "As" by Tony Sherman, "Buttercup" by Jackson 5, "Have A Talk With God" by East St Louis Gospelettes, "Betcha Wouldn't Hurt Me" by Quincy Jones, "Golden Lady" by Reel People with Tony Momrelle, "If You Don't Love Me" by GC Cameron, "If She Breaks Your Heart Again" by Foreign Exchange, "Don't You Worry Bout A Thing" by Black Sugar, "Go Home" by Jrod Indigo, and "Make My Water Boil" by David Ruffin. ✨✧ FeltStrange Idols Pattern & Other Short Stories ... LP
Cherry Red (UK), 1984. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Seminal work from one of the greatest groups of British pop in the 80s – the incredible Felt, a band whose talents ran from the jangly to the lyrical and poetic! The album's a perfect illustration of these two sides of the group – as tunes shift effortlessly between light, melodic tracks with a 60s-inspired approach, to deeper, longer ones that involve complicated guitar and keyboard explorations. There's a sunny sadness to the whole album – the emergence of that indescribable sound that can only be summed up by "Felt" – and which has made the group a favorite of ours for years. Titles include "Sunlight Bathed The Golden Glow", "Roman Litter", "Sempiternal Darkness", "Spanish House", "Crystal Ball", "Vasco Da Gama", "Whirlpool Vision Of Shame", and "Imprint". ✨✧ Frank Zappa/Mothers Of InventionUncle Meat ... LP
Reprise/Bizarre, 1969. Very Good 2LP Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An amazing movie in sound – supposedly music (and more) that was going to be used in a film project, issued to the public while Zappa was trying to raise money for production! The album's one of the most tripped-out studio efforts to date from the group – loads of overdubbing, and wonderfully complicated instrumentation – with some especially great keyboards from Don Preston and Ian Underwood, whose keys alone almost preface the future of fusion – while, at the same time, display some key links to 20th century avant music as well! Vocals are dropped in at just the right time, but the instrumental interplay is what really makes the record special – over many short tracks that include "Mr Green Genes", "We Can Shoot You", "Dog Breath Variations", "Sleeping In A Jar", "The Legend Of The Golden Arches", "Uncle Meat", "Cruising For Burgers", and "King Kong" in many variations. ✨✧ Chief Xian Atunde Adjuah (Christian Scott)Bark Out Thunder Roar Out Lightning ... LP
Ropeadope, 2023. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
With a record like this, it's hard to believe that Christian Scott started out in more standard jazz – as Chief Xian Atunde Adjuah is a very different artist altogether, one who wraps together worlds and eras of musical heritage – working here in a set that's very heavy on percussion, vocal refrains, and other elements you never would have heard in his earlier music! The leader works a whole host of percussion along with other members of the group, but also adds in some larger production elements too – always in a way that's nicely subtle, and preserves the acoustic energy at the core – yet which really enriches the proceedings too! The album's overflowing with righteous power – and titles include "On To New Orleans", "Bark Out Thunder Roar Out Lighting", "Xodokan Iko Hu Na Ney", "Trouble That Mornin", "Blood Calls Blood", "Ashe Chief Donald", "Golden Crown", and "Shallow Water". Long free French avant tracks – recorded in that golden year of 1969, and featuring Coursil on trumpet, Arthur Jones on alto, Beb Guerin on bass, and Claude Delcloo on drums. The record's perhaps not as focused as some of the best efforts on BYG/Actuel – but it does have a strong degree of energy, and shows that the spirit that was pervading the sessions stretched past the big names on the label. Titles include "Duke", "Fidel", and "Paper". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Kim Fowley & OthersKing Of Creeps – Lost Treasures From The Vaults Vol 3 – 1959 to 1969 ... LP
Norton, Late 50s/1960s. Near Mint- Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
We love Kim Fowley, and can never get enough of his genius – and no matter what the setting, Fowley always seems to move around the maddest corners of rock and pop music! This raw batch of gems is all pulled from the Fowley vaults – and features a host of indie singles recorded in LA between his bigger bursts of fame – some with Kim in the lead, lots more with lesser-known talents all given Fowley's forceful treatment in the studio – a push forward that makes just about every track here sparkle like some long-lost garage rocker or weird novelty number. Norton provides very detailed notes that are as much a musical journey as the cuts themselves – and titles include "The Knight In Shining Armor" by Knights Of The Round Table, "Kalani Honey" by John Paul Jones, "Young & Wild" by Renegade Five, "Big Bad Wolf" by Kim Garry & The Rhythm Kings, "Watch Your Step" by Larry Green & The Rhythmaires, "Goin Away Baby" and "Golden Apples Of The Sun" by Grains Of Sand, "Wanted Dead Or Alive" by The Rogues, "Moses" by Navarros, and "The Trip", "Astrology", and a rare radio spot all by Kim Fowley. Apple, 1969. Used Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Pure brilliance from start to finish – especially the second side of the record, which has a continuous run of tunes that's very unique – and still completely sublime all these many years later! The album shows the fracturing ideas of the group, but crafted together with a unity you won't find on The White Album or Let It Be – still a way of making it all gel together beautifully, as the fab four stretch their wings to find new ways of being. Added instrumentation is used wonderfully – never overdone, but with orchestral passages that can really hammer home the best musical moments – and titles include "I Want You", "Because", "You Never Give Me Your Money", "Golden Slumbers", "The End", "Her Majesty", "Polythene Pam", and "Sun King". ✨✧ George BensonOther Side Of Abbey Road ... LP
CTI/A&M, 1969. Near Mint- Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A wonderfully wicked album – one that sold so many copies that it's sometimes hard to remember how great it is! George takes on all of Abbey Road – or just about all of it – as he runs through some of the most beautiful tracks The Beatles ever wrote, like "Golden Slumbers", "I Want You (She's So Heavy)", "The End", "Because", and "You Never Give Me Your Money". The whole thing's set to some great baroque jazzy arrangements by Don Sebesky, and George digs the whole thing so much that he even sings a bit – vocalizing in a cool chromatic way that really works well with his guitar playing, and which would soon transform into a very popular style on his records of the 70s. Keyboards are by Bob James and Herbie Hancock – and there's plenty of other great jazz players in the mix! LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Honey LtdComplete LHI Recordings (180 gram vinyl) ... LP
LHI/Light In The Attic, 1968. Near Mint- Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Sublime girl group sounds from the great Lee Hazlewood – the complete recordings of Honey Ltd – an obscure Hazlewood project from the end of the 60s! The style here combines all the depths of Lee's own music with some of the sweeter Sunshine Pop sounds you'd expect from the cover – a really unique mix that has these moodier moments coming forth at times that really surprise us – and which takes the music way way past that of any of the girls' hipper contemporaries – especially the similarly-named Honeys! The harmonies are incredible – definitely rooted in jazz, with a complexity that goes way past pop – and in a way, the group remind us a bit of the incredible Third Wave group who recorded for MPS around the same time – although these gals definitely get a more sinister sound from Lee's help in the studio. Songs are mostly originals by the group – penned with some very compelling lyrics – and the album features great arrangements from Ian Frebairn Smith, who really does a great job of mixing the baroque with the groovy! The set features the full rare album by the quartet, plus two single tracks, and some unreleased cuts as well – titles that include "The Warrior", "Silk N Honey", "Come Down", "For Your Mind", "I've Got Your Mind", "Tomorrow Your Heart", "Eli's Coming", "I'm So Glad", "Love The Devil (backing track)", and "Silver Threads & Golden Needles". ✨✧ Sun RaIn The Orbit Of Ra ... LP
Strut (UK), 1960s/1970s. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Ace (UK), Early 90s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A fantastic collection of work from a real golden age in hip hop – a period that you'll probably guess from the image of the Native Tongues posse on the front – served up here in a compilation that brings together classics from De La Soul, The Jungle Brothers, Monie Love, and many others! The set list is superb – and while most of the tracks are well-remembered gems, and not the kind of rare cuts we usually hear from Ace Records – taken together, they're a tremendous reminder of a time when hip hop really came alive – bursting with wit, wisdom, and a whole new sense of musical imagination! As usual with Ace, the liner notes and other details are great – making this way more than just a slap-dash mix of hits – and titles include "You're Not Coming Home (Mase's funkay recall mix)" by Groove Garden, "Age Ain't Nothin But A #" by Chi Ali, "Bonita Applebum" by Tribe Called Quest, "Sunshine Men" by Freestyle Fellowship, "Peachfuzz" by KMD, "K Sera Sera" by Justin Warfield, "It's A Shame" by Monie Love, "Doin Our Own Dang" by Jungle Brothers, "OPP" by Naughty By Nature, "Doowutchyalike" by Digital Underground, "A Roller Skating Jam Named Saturdays" by De La Soul, "The Choice Is Yours" by Black Sheep, "All For One" by Brand Nubian, "My Definition Of A Boombastic Jazz Style" by Dream Warriors, "Mama Gave Birth To The Soul Children" by Queen Latifah with De La Soul, "Where I'm From" by Digable Planets, and "We Run Things (It's Like Dat)" by Da Bush Babees. A very cool criss-crossing of classic and contemporary jazz cuts – all put together by the same folks who've given us the excellent Jazz Room reissue label in recent years! The vibe here is expanded past the 70s and 80s material reissued by that label – and the right use of more recent cuts really does a lot to open up the music – expanding the palette in really wonderful ways, while still holding onto plenty of the classic jazz dance modes that first started taking over the UK clubs in the early years of Gilles Peterson and some of his contemporaries! Titles include "Niger Mambo" by Chieck Tidiane Seck, "African Flutes" by Clare Fischer, "Water No Get Enemy" by Daniel Crawford, "Sounds" by Eternal Buzz Brass Band, "Don't You Want Me" by Fast 3, "Golden Brown" by Take Vibe, "The Hipster" by Florian Pellissier, "Black & Decker" by Raul Monsalve Y Los Forajidos, "Jazz Carnival" by Cruisic, and "Rebel No 27 (7" edit)" by Chip Wickham. That sun-drenched image on the cover really gets at the spirit of the music on this excellent compilation – as most of the work has this slow-stepping, laidback sort of vibe – funky, but easygoing too – with the kind of cool, casual elements that maybe feel like the kind of music that you'd put on back at home, to rest up with a cool drink after spending a long day at the ocean! Many of the tracks are vintage, but there's some contemporary nuggets here too – a really well-chosen blend of cuts that are almost a genre unto themselves. Think "sitar funk", and you'll start to get the vibe of the set – as there's some of that here, but plenty more going on too – all sorts of unusual hybrids of funky rhythms and exotic instrumentation – not totally retro, but often with some great old school funk elements in the mix!
