Barrington Levy/Coco Tea/Charlie ChaplinVolcano Dancehall Albums Collection (Bounty Hunter/Weh Dem A Go Do/Sound System/Dancehall Rockers/bonus tracks) ... CD
Doctor Bird (UK), Late 1970s/Early 1980s. New Copy 2CDs ... $18.99 24.99
A quartet of classic albums, most of which haven't been reissued for decades – presented on a 2CD set with bonus tracks too! First up is Bounty Hunter – a seminal album from Barrington Levy – one that features key work from producer Henry Junjo Lawes, who helps push Levy's roots-styled lyrics nicely into the dancehall generation! There's a lean, laidback vibe to the set – one that marks it as early in this moment in Jamaican music – yet the whole thing also has a freshness that really finds a new setting for the soulful expressions of a singer like Levy, whose snakey way of putting across a lyric really works wonderfully with the grooves! Titles include "Shaolin Temple", "Bounty Hunter", "Trod With Jah Jah", "Wedding Ring", "Skylarking", and "Jah Life". Next is Weh Dem A Go Do – a dancehall classic from Coco Tea – one that's put together with superb production and arrangements from Henry Junjo Lawes, with backing from both the Roots Radics and High Times! Coco's clearly the main star of the set, though – as he delivers lyrics with this laidback vibe that seems to echo older dee jay modes, but with a very melodic vibe – kicking it nicely over grooves that are gentle, but also have that crispness of the dancehall generation too! Titles include "Informer", "Jah Made Them That Way", "On Top Of The World", "I'm Going Home", "Can't Stop Coco Tea", and "I'm Wanted". CD2 features two great dancehall albums from Charlie Chaplin – both from the mid 80s, with more production from Lawes – and titles that include "Screwface People", "Tribute To Marvin Gaye", "We Hot", "Small Days", "International Robbery", "Yankee Skank", "Hey Youthman", "Drifting", "Face To Face", and "Eden Ah Try". 2CD set also features bonus tracks – "Skylarking (12" mix)", "Moonlight Dub", and "Shine Eye Girl Version" by Barrington Levy – plus "Christmas Is Coming" by Coco Tea. Great Doctor Bird presentation throughout – excellent notes and great sound! CD

Vampi Soul (Spain), 1970. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Massive work from this funky Nigerian cat – a set that offers up a key mix of James Brown funk and home-grown elements – all in a blend that's totally unique! The 1970 album mixes together equal parts African highlife and American soul – making for a style that's heavy one minute, lighter the next – and always changing things up in a really dynamic way! Percussion plays a big role on the funkier cuts, and guitar is on most numbers too – used with a lyrical, rhythmic style on the highlife numbers – and a much more hard-vamping approach on the funkier ones. Includes killer versions of "Mother Popcorn", "Let Yourself Go", "There Was A Time", "I Feel Alright", and "Cold Sweat" – plus the tracks "Okere Gwonko", "Everybody Needs Love", "Onuro", and "Magic Feet". There's also some great electric bass from Nick Macri, which makes for a bolder sense of rhythm at points – almost a groove on the large leadoff cut – while the individual players trade musical moments that leave us breathless throughout! Philadelphia International, 1970s. Used ... Out Of Stock
Philly International, way past the hits – presented here on a special collection of key rarities from the legendary label! If you think you've heard Philly before, get ready to think again – because the tracks here are all non-iconic gems from the deeper reaches of the label – deeper soul, hipper club, and heavier funk than you might expect from the sweeter chart singles the imprint scored back in the 70s! The package is a masterpiece – way better than we might have expected, and featuring some key tracks that even we'd never heard before – more than enough to have you digging funky 45s for Philly International. Tracks include "Ghetto Woman (parts 1 & 2)" by Ruth McFadden, "Everybody Needs Good Lovin (parts 1 & 2)" by Bunny Sigler, "Days Go By" by Bobby Bennett, "It's So Wonderful" by Johnny Williams, "Makin Up Time (parts 1 & 2)" by Frankie & The Spindles, "Hard Workin Man" by Pat & The Blenders, "Theme From Five Fingers Of Death" by Bunny Sigler, "Good & Plenty" by Carolyn Crawford, "Yellow Sunshine" by Yellow Sunshine, "Darling Come Back Home" by Love Committee, and "Grasshopper" by The Soul Devalents. Brownswood (UK), 2024. New Copy ... $20.99 22.99
Dayme Arocena has sounded great in the past – but here, she really seems to find her own groove – a style that's moved very strongly past her Cuban roots, but without losing the sense of soul at the core – as the singer has this way of creating a very universal vibe with this album – music that may hopefully give her the international stardom she deserves! As with other Brownswood Record releases, there's a real genre-busting approach going on here – so that Arocena's able to mix jazz, soul, Latin, and more contemporary modes with a very fresh, decidedly individual sound – far more than the sum of its parts. Titles include "American Boy", "Coda", "Suave Y Pegao", "Por Ti", "Die & Live Again", "Como Vivir Por El", and "I Rather Let It Go". LP, Vinyl record album

Robinsongs (UK), Late 60s/1970s. New Copy 5CDs ... $39.99 44.99
An incredible run of music from one of the grooviest soul groups of all time – a combo who started out down in the Texas scene with some very upbeat dancing soul singles in the 60s, who then moved to work in the Philly studios in the 70s, where they really opened up their groove! The set features work from both the group's early albums for Atlantic Records and their great second chapter at Philadelphia International – quite a career, given that they recorded for two of the greatest soul labels of the 60s and 70s – in a massive batch of work that's included here, with bonus material too! The Atlantic work starts out nice and raw, and pretty funky too – then gets warmed up in the best way possible as the label has them working with Gamble & Huff, before then leaving to record for the Philly duo's own International label in the 70s. The huge box features the full albums Tighten Up, I Can't Stop Dancing, There's Gonna Be A Showdown, Dance Your Troubles Away, Where Will You Go When The Party's Over, Hard Not To Like It, and Strategy – and CD5 is a full set of bonus tracks, with titles that include "Dog Eat Dog", "Deal With Him", "A World Without Music", "Love At First Sight", "Archie's In Love", "Wrap It Up", "I Wish", "Get It From The Bottom", "Old People", "Let The World Know You Got Soul", and "I Can't Face You Baby". Box features 79 tracks in all – and a big booklet of notes! CD

Dee Dee BridgewaterDee Dee Bridgewater (1976)/Just Family/Bad For Me/Dee Dee Bridgewater (1980) ... CD
Robinsongs (UK), Late 70s. New Copy 2CD ... $15.99 22.99 About March 7, 2025
Four great albums from Dee Dee Bridgewatwer – a hell of a jazz singer, and also a great soul talent too! First up is a self-titled set from 1976 – Dee Dee Bridgewater's first album as a soul singer – recorded a few years after she first broke on the scene as a righteous jazz vocalist on hip early 70s classics! The sound here is different than the material Bridgewater started with, but still plenty great from a soul perspective – tightly-crafted, sophisticated work that features both uptempo and mellow cuts – in a mode that's quite similar to the Columbia work of Marlena Shaw – another former jazz vocalist who made a 70s shift to soul. Production is by Gene Page, Jerry Wexler, and Stephen Scheaffer – and the set was recorded in a variety of different setting that spin out over the course of the tracks. We're most partial to the mellow cuts – which trip along with some great spacey edges – and titles include a great version of "He's Gone", plus "My Prayer", "You Saved Me", "Goin Through The Motions", "It Ain't Easy", and "Every Man Wants Another Man's Woman". Just Family is a sweet funky fusion album that Dee Dee recorded for Elektra in the late 70s. The set was produced by Stanley Clarke, and has a soul/fusion sound that's not that different than his own work of the time, and which works very well with Dee Dee's sweet vocal approach. Players include Bobby Lyle, Ronnie Foster, George Duke, and other strong 70s fusion players – and overall, the record's probably Dee Dee's best non straight jazz album of the 70s. Tracks include "Sweet Rain", "Open Up Your Eyes", "Just Family", "Melody Maker", and "Children Are The Spirit (Of The World)". Bad For Me is one of Dee Dee Bridgewater's standout sets as a soul singer in the 70s – a mode that's quite different than the sound of Bridgewater you may know from her mostly-jazz career – but one that gets plenty of sharp help from the great George Duke! Duke produced the set – and really knows how to balance Dee Dee's jazz roots with some of the modern soul impulses of the set – letting her really soar on some mellower moments, while hewing to the groove on the more upbeat cuts – which may well be some of the strongest on the album. Throughout it all, Bridgewater is a model of care and class – very different than most mainstream R&B singers of the time – and titles include "Streetsinger", "For the Girls", "Love Won't Let Me Go", "Back Of Your Mind", and "Is This What The Feeling Gets". Last up is the second self-titled Dee Dee Bridgewater album, from 1980 – recorded during a brief break from jazz at the end of the 70s, and done with some sweetly grooving from Thom Bell! The sound here's a bit like that of some of the later Philly International work from the same stretch – a maturing style that still has a bit of the earlier groove in place, yet which also takes on a more sophisticated approach, especially on the mellower cuts and ballads. In a way, the format's a bit like that used for Jean Carn or Phyllis Hyman at the time – and like those singers, Dee Dee seems to work best here when she's got a nice gentle groove to bring out the jazzier inflections in her voice! Titles include "When You're In Love", "That's The Way Love Should Feel", "Give In To Love", "Lonely Disco Dancer", "One In A Million Guy", and "Jody (Whoever You Are)". CD

International Anthem, 2023. New Copy ... $9.99 14.99
A sublime blend of jazz and organic sounds from multi-instrumentalist Bex Burch – a record that sounds as if it might have come from the studio of Carlos Nino, but which almost has a more personal, poetic sort of quality! There are some sounds of nature here – including bird calls from a sanctuary in Illinois – and even the more familiar instruments, like piano, drums, reeds, violin, or bass are often mixed with some "room" elements that really locate the recording in a special place – in ways that also seem to have some of that post-studio touches around the edges that we love from the International Anthem label. Burch clearly delivers most of the sound herself, almost doing an "in residence" to create the music – but she gets help along the way from guests who include Ben LaMar Gay, Dan Bitney, Rob Frye, Anna Butterss, and Macie Stewart – on titles that include "When Love Begins", "Don't Go Back To Sleep", "Dawn Blessings", "Follow Me I Make You Happy", "Start Before You're Ready", "Pardieu", and "If I Was You I'd Be Doing Exactly The Same". ✨✧ Jean CarnJean Carn ... LP
Philadelphia International, 1976. Very Good+ ... Just Sold Out!
Jean Carn was one of the best-ever singers to hit the Philly International label – a sophisticated diva with a style that would strongly influence soul music for the next 10 years, and a downright compelling voice that crafted some of the best modern soul of her generation. Although Jean started out as a spiritually-oriented singer working with husband Doug Carn and Earth Wind & Fire, this debut album has her grooving in a style that resembles the classy Columbia sound of Marlena Shaw. Like Shaw, Carn takes the best of her jazz roots, and strips off the nonsense to adapt to a more modern style. Gamble & Huff take a great deal of care with the album – and are careful not to bury Jean's voice in overly club-oriented arrangements, as they occasionally did with other female singers. Includes the hit groover "Free Love", plus "Don't You Know Love When You See It", "You Are All I Need", "You Got A Problem", and "If You Wanna Go Back". LP, Vinyl record album

CongosHeart Of The Congos ... LP
VP, 1976. New Copy (reissue)... $24.99 28.99
A classic slice of Jamaican roots – and an essential record from the godlike hands of Lee Perry! The set was produced by Perry at Black Ark – and instantly became the stuff of legend, even though the initial version of the album got very limited exposure – which has led to years of differing reissues and versions of the record! Yet the core sound is always very much in place, no matter what the setting – very spiritual lyrics from the group themselves, set to nicely stripped-down rhythms and instrumentation that are a great contrast to the wave of more polished international reggae releases that were garnering mainstream attention at the time. The lasting power of the set is proof that maybe when it comes to roots, you've got to really go to the roots to get it right – as you'll hear on classic tracks that include "La La Bam Bam", "Fisherman", "Congoman", "Children Crying", "Open Up The Gate", and "The Wrong Thing". A post-Philly International album from Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes, but one that still keeps their groove very much intact – thanks to instrumental help from Norman Harris, Ron Baker, Vince Montana, Earl Young, and a host of other Sigma Sound talents! Although recorded in the early 80s, the set's actually got a stripped-down quality that really reminds us of the earliest days of Philly International – kind of a back-to-basics approach that really works well for The Blue Notes, at a time when so many other groups might have been tempted to push off into clunkier territory. We might miss Teddy Pendergrass a bit in the lead, but the vocals are still totally top-shelf – very much in the best group soul mode of the time – and titles include "Hang On In There", "Come Go With Me", "Ain't That Love", "Tell Me Why", "I'm In Love With You", and "Have I Told You I Love You Today". A Philly soul legend finally gets his time in the spotlight – as drummer Earl Young played on countless classic sessions back in the day, but rarely even got his name in the liner notes! That lack of recognition is corrected here – in a great package that puts Young's face on the cover, details his genius on the drums in the notes, and then presents a motherlode of killer soul tunes from the late 60s through the 70s! Young's maybe best known for his work at Sigma Sound Studios, and on famous sessions for the Philadelphia International label – but here, he's heard on an even wider range of cuts – including late 60s Northern Soul numbers, and great album work by artists you might not normally associate with Philly. Dub Store (Japan), 1960s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $35.99 39.99
Fantastic sounds from the years before reggae became the international sound of Jamaica – music from the island nation's jazz scene, which was at the crossroads of so many different styles of music – jazz from the north, Latin rhythms from Cuba and Puerto Rico, and a fair bit of other Caribbean sounds too – all of which filter through the wonderful collection of music on the set! The title breaks down the different genres featured – but there's often a surprisingly unified feel to the whole record too – one that stands partly as a testament to the musical strengths of all the performers involved! In the days before Trojan and Studio One, Federal Records was an important Jamaican label – and did an especially great job of capturing some of the sounds that were part of that nation's club culture and resorts in the 60s. The Wicked Pickett takes his groove up to Philly – and comes up with a whole new sound in the process – a raw new style for the 70s, and one that's almost even more compelling than his Muscle Shoals groove! The album was recorded at the early Sigma Sound studios in Philly – and features arrangements from Bobby Martin, Lenny Pakula, and Roland Chambers – all artists who really help bring in a northern vibe to Pickett's music, yet still let those amazingly raw vocals do their thing! Sony (Germany), Late 70s. Used 3CD ... Out Of Stock
A great little set of classic disco tracks, but one that also includes a few rare mixes too – all brought together in a monumental tribute to the sound of the east coast scene at the end of the 70s! The package is heavy on tracks with origins in Philly and New York – including a fair bit of Philadelphia International gems from the Gamble & Huff team, mixed with other work from the larger holdings of Sony labels – including Epic, Columbia, RCA, and Buddah at the time. There's a nicely unified feel to the whole thing – one that really makes us re-appreciate some of these cuts in the setting – and titles include unreleased cuts "Love is The Message (Danny Krivit edit)" by MFSB, "I Don't Wanna Lose Your Love (DJ Reverend P edit)" by The Emotions "You Can't Had From Yourself (Mike Maurro rmx)" by Teddy Pendergrass, and "Love Epidemic (DJ Reverend P edit)" by The Trammps" – plus the cuts "Don't Leave Me This Way (Tom Moulton mix)" by Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes, "Was That All It Was (78rpm version)" by Jean Carne, "Ain't No Smoke Without Fire (DJ Reverend P edit)" by Eddie Kendricks, "Bad Luck (Mike Maurro ext rmx)" by Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes, "Where Will You Go When The Party's Over (Tom Moulton mix)" by Archie Bell & The Drells, "This Time Baby (Tom Moulton mix)" by Jackie Moore, "You Stepped Into My Life (John Luongo rmx)" by Melba Moore, "I Love Music (Tom Moulton mix)" by The O'Jays, "See You When I Get There (Tom Moulton mix)" by Lou Rawls, "Could Heaven Ever Be Like This (DJ Reverend P edit)" by Idris Muhammad, "Taste Of Bitter Love" by Gladys Knight & The Pips, "It's In Your Blood (special disco version)" by Linda Hopkins, "Boogie Wonderland (12" version)" by Earth Wind & Fire, "Walk Right Now (John Luongo disco mix)" by The Jacksons, "Standing Right Here (Tom Moulton mix)" by Melba Moore, "Groovin You (12" mix)" by Harvey Mason, and "Dirty Old Man (Tom Moulton ext 12" mix)" by Three Degrees. International Anthem, 2023. Used ... Out Of Stock
✨✧ Jerry ButlerPhiladelphia Sessions – Iceman Cometh, Ice On Ice, & More! ... CD
Mercury, Late 60s. Used ... Out Of Stock
Genius work from Jerry Butler – working here with the early Gamble & Huff team, years before their 70s fame with Philly International, in a smooth soul style that would soon become known as Philly Soul! By the late 60s, Jerry's work with Vee Jay was long ended – the label had come to an end through financial misdealings, but Jerry was still growing as a vocalist, ready for new styles and challenges. Hooking up with Gamble & Huff was pure genius, as the pair were brilliant young producers, working magic with smaller groups – but ready to handle a talent as large as Jerry's with ease. Butler's name and style proved to be a perfect foil for many of their new and sophisticated approaches to soul – and the union instantly yielded some super-huge hits, including "Only The Strong Survive", "Hey Western Union Man", "Never Give You Up", "Lost", and "Moody Woman". All those great tracks are on this set – which combines Butler's first two albums with the Gamble & Huff team (Iceman Cometh and Ice On Ice), and also adds in 3 bonus tracks from other albums (many of which repeated tracks from these two, and are hence not correctly reissued on their own.) The set's a brilliant batch of late 60s soul – with a total of 25 tracks that include (in addition to the numbers named above) "Brand New Me", "Beside You", "No Money Down", "Go Away, Find Yourself", "Been A Long Time", "When You're Alone", "Don't Let Love Hang You Up", and "How Can I Get In Touch With You". U.S. double LP reissue of two great sides of hard swinging, hard grooving jazz by the great Clark-Boland Big Band. This is some of the best European jazz to be recorded in the late 60's, and one of the best ways to hear "lost" geniuses like Benny Bailey, Sahib Shihab, Jimmy Woode, Shake Keane, and Jimmy Deuchar – not to mention more famous players like Ronnie Scott, Eddie Davis, and Johnny Griffin. Great all the way through, with loads of tight short cuts like "The Turk", "Milkshake", "November Girl", "Peter's Waltz", and "New Box". Leaving/Astrollage (Japan), 2022. Used ... Out Of Stock
A really beautiful follow-up to the previous set of duets from these two west coast musicians – and a record that's maybe even more sublime than the first! We're not sure what it is – maybe it's the passage of a few years that has deepened the sound, or maybe just the warmth that both players have for each other – yet whatever the case, the combination of the saxophones of Sam Gendel and the bass of Sam Wilkes flows out with all these tones and textures that go way past the obvious – definitely in some of the "beyond jazz" modes of the LA scene in recent years, but still with enough solo strengths to please fans of more conventional instrumentation too. There's great sonic touches to many tracks – almost an International Anthem vibe, but not in a remix/cutup way – and titles include "Greetings To Idris More Songs", "Flametop Green", "Welcome Vibe", "Theem Prototype", "SG's Prius", "Streetlevel", and a nice version of "Caroline No". ✨✧ IntrudersSave The Children ... LP
Gamble, 1973. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
A classic album from this incredible Philly soul group! The Intruders were one of the first groups to work with the Gamble/Huff team – and their sides for the team from the 60s have an amazingly professional approach to harmony soul, never afraid to hit a good hook or go for a strong image to sell a song, yet still quite raw and honest in the vocal department, where things really matter. This record is one of two late albums they recorded once Gamble & Huff had gotten a bit more fame and a lot more money – and it's an interesting transition to the slicker Philly International mode of the 70s. The group made the transition wonderfully, though – and even though they're couched in tight MFSB orchestrations, the vocals shine through brilliantly, with a less-polished quality that's a welcome change from some of the other Philly groups of the time. The big cut on the album is the band's famous tribute to motherhood – the long groover "I'll Always Love My Mama", which has some of the sweetest lyrics you'll ever hear on a Philly soul album – and which is served up here in the extended version that features some great talking near the end! But most of the rest of the cuts are fantastic, too – like the group's wonderful version of Gil Scott-Heron's "Save the Children", and the great ballads "I Wanna Know Your Name" and "To Be Happy is the Real Thing". A fantastic tribute to a fantastic record – one that takes all the core lyrical creations of Gil Scott Heron from I'm New Here, then adds in a wide array of new music from drummer/genius Makaya McCraven! The approach is similar to some of Makaya's own albums – which are both performed and re-cut – and the core of Gil's lyrics are in place, but with instrumentation that's maybe even more powerful and moving than the original release – and which takes on a slightly different shape, with some rearrangement of the songs – backed by McCraven on drums and keyboards, Joel Ross on vibes, Brandee Younger on harp, Jeff Parker on guitar, Junius Paul on bass, and some other key talents from the International Anthem side of the universe. Titles include "Certain Bad Things", "I'm New Here", "The Patch (Broken Home part 2)", "Lilly Scott (Broken Home part 3)", "People Of The Light", "Running", "Blessed Parents", "New York Is Killing Me", "The Crutch", "I've Been Me", and "Where Did The Night Go". A killer follow-up to the earlier Nigeria 70 compilation on Strut Records – a second set that digs even deeper than before, and one that shows a huge range of Nigerian grooves from the 70s! The styles here go way beyond familiar Afro Funk – and the rhythms here are often quite complicated – rootsy at times, modern at others – and served up in a blend of acoustic and electric instrumentation that dances together wonderfully! Most numbers have vocals, but those are often delivered as rhythmically as the instrumentation – and the package is filled with under-reissued gems that make the package an essential addition to any collection of global grooves. As with other sets on the newly-revived Strut label, there's full notes on the music and track-by-track details – all supporting a set list of 16 titles that includes "Everybody Likes Something Good" by Ify Jerry Krusade, "Yabis" by Sir Shina Peters & His International Stars, "Onyame" by Ashanti Afrika Jah, "Ezuku Buzo" by Bola Johnson & His Eazy Life Top Beats, "African Dialects" by Peter King, "You Are My Heart" by Rex Williams, "Hot Tears" by The Immortals, "Dododo (Ekassa No 1)" by Sir Victor Uwaifo & His Melody Maestros, "Happy Survival" by Ifeanyi Eddie Okwedy & His Maymores Dance Band, "Tug Of War" by The Faces, "Ire Africa" by Chief Checker, and "Eddie Quansa" by Peacocks Guitar Band. A fantastic album from this groundbreaking Latin combo from Chicago – one who've got an inclusive spirit that grabs together so many different elements of music and unifies them as one! Also, this vinyl version includes the additional long track "Tearing Down the Walls". LP, Vinyl record album

Ruth GollerSkylla ... LP
International Anthem, 2024. New Copy ... $20.99 21.99
A really beautiful record from bassist Ruth Goller – and a set that's nicely different than her last outing for International Anthem! This set's as much a vocal outing as a showcase for Ruth's work on both electric and acoustic bass – instruments that are used here in very unusual tunings on each track, and nicely matched to Goller's vocalizations – which are sometimes almost in the heavenly territory of Meredith Monk, but harmonized with the bass in a way that's also got some Arthur Russell vibes! There's guest vocals at points from Alice Grant and Lauren Kinsella, but only as partners to Goller – and titles include "Often They Came To Visit Even Just To See How She Was", "When They Came Closer She Realized They Were Alien Creatures", "He Was Painting Her Face With Colours She Had Never Seen", and "The Shine Of Gold Was Too Strong". Makaya McCravenWhere We Come From (Chicago x London Mixtape) ... CD
International Anthem, 2019. New Copy ... $13.99 14.99
Makaya McCraven pushes his unique jazz genius even further – by serving up a completely groundbreaking remix of live jazz performance on the London scene! McCraven's already stood out from the pack in the way that he breaks down jazz norms by playing with a recorded performance later in the studio – but this time around, he really pushes that approach to the forefront – working in a mode that really lives up to the "mixtape" of the title – but which also still has everything that we love from his other records too! Makaya's on drums – and plays with a massively heavy groove – and he plays here with some of the leading lights of the contemporary London scene – Soweto Kinch and Nubya Garcia on saxes, Joe Armon Jones on Fender Rhodes, Kamaal Williams on keyboards, and Theon Cross on tuba – in amazing performance activity which is then brought home to Chicago, where the music gets additional remix and overdub help from LeFto, Don Leisure, Earl Jeffers, Ben LaMar Gay, Emma Jean Thackray, Quiet Dawn, and Lexus Blondin. Clearly, Makaya's one hell of a collaborative spirit – yet he also manages to make this record his boldest personal statement to date – as you'll hear on titles that include "Halls", "Suite For Artis Gilmore", "Ox Tales", "The Bounce", "Oracle", "Run Dem", "Too Shy", and "Drums & Bruk & Feel The Vibe". Rim Kwaku Obeng & The BelieversToo Tough/I'm Not Going To Let You ... LP
Sum Sum/BBE (UK), Early 80s. New Copy 2LP ... $22.99 29.99
Wonderfully groovy work from Rim Kwaku Obeng – an artist with African roots, but working here in the San Francisco scene of the early 80s – where he's clearly picked up a very international vibe in his music! Rim definitely plays some traditional percussion on the tracks, but there's also a more contemporary funky club approach too – a mixing of modes that's totally great, and which almost represents an 80s step forward for the already-great Bay Area soul vibe of the 70s! The first half of the set features material from the Too Tough EP – which has very cool female vocals, both a lead and a chorus – the latter of whom move around with the rhythms in this totally great way that almost feels like some New York cuts from the Danceteria generation. The second half of the set loses the female singers, but is still every bit as wonderful as the first – with these long grooves from Rim & The Believers that have the percussion, basslines, and guitars criss-crossing in even more amazing ways. Titles include "Shine The Ladies", "Love Me For Real", "I'm Not Going To Let You", "Peace Of Mind", and "I'm A Song Writer". LP, Vinyl record album

Billy PaulGoing East ... LP
Philadelphia International, Early 70s. Very Good+ ... $11.99
One of Billy Paul's greatest albums ever – or perhaps the greatest! The record is an amazing blend of soul, jazz, and a soaring sense of spiritualism that's not only rare for Billy Paul – but which makes the record sound different than any other Philly International LP from the time! Billy's way more than a soul singer here – and working in a mode that's very high-concept, reaching towards the sky to bring a new maturity to the music that pushes way past his other pop and soul recordings in the 70s – almost with a consciousness of the spiritual jazz underground, but a bit more focused as well. You can hear this best on the classic track "East", a swirling long groover that takes an extended funky soul jazz journey – and other good cuts include "Jesus Boy (You Only Look Like A Man)", "Love Buddies", "I Wish It Were Yesterday", "Magic Carpet Ride", "This Is Your Life", and a nice cover of "Compared To What". ✨✧ Chi-Lites(For God's Sake) Give More Power To The People ... LP
Brunswick, 1970. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Seminal work from one of the 70s greatest groups! The band had always been great at love songs and uptempo numbers – but this record has them moving into more righteous area, picking up on some of the more socially conscious soul of their generation that had been working its way up the charts. The album features excellent production by Chi-Lite Eugene Record, who also wrote a lot of the material – plus arrangements by Tom Tom and Sonny Sanders. Great stuff all around, with the righteous social tunes "(For God's Sake) Give More Power to The People", "Trouble's A Comin", and "We Are Neighbors" – plus classic love songs "Have You Seen Her" and "Love Uprising", which are still kind of the band's strongest point. Loads more great stuff on this one, the album that helped the second wave of Chicago soul break out into the international market! LP, Vinyl record album

One of the grooviest albums on the legendary International Artists label – a set that's as psychedelic and experimental as most of the others in the imprint, but also pretty darn tuneful as well! Golden Dawn have a nicely stretched-out approach to their music – one that lets the songs build up slowly, then really pack a punch as their catchier hooks come into play. There's a bit of a late 60s SF rock quality to the record – especially when the vocals get a bit wild – and the guitars ring out nicely with a great rough-edged sound. ✨✧ Julius Hemphill (Mbari)Dogon AD (with bonus track) (LP sleeve edition) ... CD
International Phonograph/Arista, 1972/1977. Used Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A seminal session from the St Louis scene of the early 70s – one that was humming nearly as much as Chicago was with the AACM at the time! As with the larger organization in the Windy City, St Louis had the Black Artists Group – of which Julius Hemphill was a key member, forming fresh new ideas in improvisatory jazz with players who went onto have an undeniable impact on the global scene as well. This album's one of the standout recordings of the Black Artists era at its best – a record produced by Hemphill, but equally balanced between his own alto and flute, the trumpet of Baikida Carroll, cello of Abdul Wadud, and drums of Phillip Wilson – plus a bit of added baritone from Haimet Bluiett. The rhythms are quite open, but there's also a nice sense of structure to the record too – a bridge between spiritual and free jazz that prefaces the impact that both Hemphill and Bluiett would have on the New York loft jazz generation. Titles include "Dogon AD", "Rites", and "The Painter". Great reissue too – in a gatefold LP-styled cover, with bonus insert notes, including the artwork from the original 1972 pressing on Hemphill's Mbari label! CD also features a bonus track – "Hard Blues" from Hemphill's Coon Business album! CD

✨✧ Ennio MorriconeUna Pistola Per Ringo/Il Ritorno Di Ringo (2CD set – with bonus tracks) ... CD
RCA/Quartet (Spain), Late 1960s. New Copy 2CDs ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A great package, and one that brings together two important early western scores from the mighty Ennio Morricone! Una Pistola Per Ringo is a mid 60s classic – a key entry into the spaghetti western era, and one that's already ripe for international exposure – as you might expect from the use of English lyrics on the leadoff "Angel Face" song on the theme! After that, though, and a bit of barroom piano, things get into that weird and wonderful world that Ennio Morricone would also explore with Sergio Leone – all sorts of strange sounds, brooding elements, and this unusual sonic landscape that would forever change the way we listen to the west! Titles include "Rag Sospeso", "Messico Eroico", "Lo Scotro", "L'Attesa", "La Strage", and "Bamba Bambina". Il Ritorno Di Ringo follows very strongly in the spirit of the great first soundtrack in the Ringo film – this time with Bruno Nicolai handling the orchestrations of the Morricone score – but with a quality that still highlights all the best brooding sense of sound in the compositions. Titles include "Il Funerale", "Lo Sceriffo Carson", "Dai Fuentes", "La Bamba Di Barnaba", "Il Matrimonio E La Vendetta", and the English theme "Il Ritorno Di Ringo". 2CD package features lots of material – 49 tracks in all! A landmark bit of avant prog psych from the American underground of the late 60s – the astral mindblower that is God Bless The Red Krayola & All Who Sail It! This second album is the group's early masterpiece – a brilliant, jarring psychedelic work of genius! It's got the strangeness of the Parable LP, but Mayo & the boys have a way with strange melody that escaped the earlier album. It's often buried under the astral wierdness and abrasive tendancies, but it nevertheless casts a spooky glow throughout! ✨✧ Billy PaulWar Of The Gods ... LP
Philadelphia International, 1974. Very Good+ Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A stone treasure from one of the greatest soul singers of the 70s – and a set you'll regularly find in the coolest of record collections from back in the day! Billy Paul was always one of the hippest talents on Philly International – mixing together soul and jazz influences with a deeper sense of spirituality, and long experience as a sophisticated vocalist. This album's one of his most sublime efforts – kind of a quasi-spiritual record with a similar high-concept approach to some of Marvin Gaye's work from the same time – really righteous, in ways that the Philly label didn't always hit – and which really goes past even most of Billy's already hip previous efforts. Gamble and Huff produced and wrote most of the record – including the two long tracks that make up side one, "I See The Light" and "War Of The Gods", the latter of which starts out slow and moody, then breaks out into a club groove. Other titles include the more standard soul tune "The Whole Town's Talking", plus "Thanks For Saving My Life" and "Peace Holy Peace". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ El Gran FelloveMango Mangue ... CD
Vampi Soul (Spain), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
One of the first international collections to showcase the genius of Francisco Fellove Valdes – a singer and percussionist who first rose up on the scene in Havana in the 50s, but who made an undeniably strong contribution to the Mexican scene of the late 50s and early 60s – with the sort of material showcased in this set! Fellove's got a very unusual style of singing – influenced a bit by scatting in jazz, but also given more of the prouder, louder calls that you'd hear on an Afro Cuban jam session – a great balance with the heavy percussion and jazzy instrumentation used on these tracks, almost all of which were recorded for RCA down in Mexico. The track selection is wonderful, and the notes do a great job of introducing the world to this sometimes-overlooked figure in Latin music – presented here with 21 tracks that include "Mango Mangue", "Baile Mi Rumba", "Te Quiero Corazon", "El Yoyo", "San Jose", "Alejate De Mi", ""Mata Siguaraya", "Baile El Minuet", "Baila Mi Guapacha", and "Guapacheando". Raw, amazing grooves sailing the Afro Beat Airways – organ flavored Afro funk, soul & psychedelia from West African Ghana & Togo in the 70s – one of best compilations yet on the increasingly awe inspiring Analog Africa label! The African percussion is raw and danceable and funk steeped, and most of the numbers have a range of really cool organ sounds, and vocals that range from insistently melodic singing to to funky shouts. From there, the groove is more varied. There's strains of tried & true Afro funk & soul, larger group jazzy jams and more stripped down cosmic and psych influenced nuggets. A stunning selection of highlife material from the Nigerian scene – a huge double-length collection that really offers up a vivid example of the music that was in place before the big wave of 70s Afro Funk and other new styles! The work here is different than some of the more commercial highlife recordings you might know – especially those from the big 80s years of world music – as the recording quality is often nice and raw, and the focus is mostly on acoustic percussion, electric guitar, and jazzier horn lines next to the vocals – with grooves usually moving at a mighty nice clip in a bold explosion of color! The bulk of the work on the 19 track set is from the 50s through the early 70s – and titles include "Yei Ngebewoh" by ET Menseh & The Tempos, "Akwanoma Hiahii" by Rambler Dance Band, "Muntie (Highlife Charanga)" by Ramblers International, "Eyaa Dudm" by Professional Uhuru Band, "Ogiobo" by Sir Victor Uwaifo & His Titibitis Of Africa, "Osondi Owendi" by Chief Stephen Osita Osadebe, and "Koko Ahataw Kur" by George Williams Aingo. International Anthem, 2023. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Incredibly lovely piano and vocals from Thandi Ntuli – served up here with lots of special touches from spiritual master Carlos Nino – who helped create the proceedings as a very organic meeting of minds and hearts on the shores of sunny California! Thandi's got a soulful way of both playing and singing – the latter often in a non-lyrical way, so that the vocals are more these chants that flow out with a very spiritual vibe – often cyclical, and elliptical, and mixed with these warm piano lines and a bit of keyboards. Carlos adds in percussion and cymbals (plus "plants" – we're not sure how he did that) – and also recorded the album and shaped the sound in a very lovely way. The music is mostly improvised, but very melodic, and extremely personal – one of the most soulful projects we've heard from Nino in years. CD

Patti AustinEnd Of A Rainbow ... LP
CTI, 1976. Very Good+ ... $11.99
Wonderfully warm soul from the great Patti Austin – a key artist in the late 70s, and one who really helped push the music forward with a new sense of sophistication! Patti's got a strongly jazzy vibe here – and works with David Matthews arrangements that are really well put-together – less funky than some of Dave's other work of the period, and filled with these mellow moments that really let Austin's energy flow! The overall feel is a bit like some of Jean Carn's work on Philly International – hip, sophisticated, and filled with plenty of jazz touches – although with an even stronger approach to ballads – and titles include the classic "This Side Of Heaven", plus "More Today Than Yesterday", "Say You Love Me", "In My Life", "Give It Time", and "What's At The End Of A Rainbow". LP, Vinyl record album
(Yellow label pressing with Van Gelder stamp. Cover has light wear and aging.)

Doug CarnSpirit Of The New Land ... CD
Black Jazz/Real Gone, 1972. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
Plenty of spirit, and plenty of soul – a 70s classic from organist Doug Carn, and a record that took his instrument, and jazz in general, to a whole new level for the decade! Carn's got this burning, righteous quality on his keys – a vibe that certainly owes something to Larry Young, but also takes off even further – working in a spiritual ensemble that also features his wife Jean Carn on vocals – sounding way more like a righteous jazz singer than on her later soul sides for Philly International! Other players are great, too – and include Charles Tolliver on flugelhorn, Garnett Brown on trombone, George Harper on tenor and soprano sax, Buster Williams on bass, and Alphonse Mouzon on drums. Tracks include "New Moon", "Trance Dance", "My Spirit", "Blue In Green", and "Arise & Shine". CD

Alabaster DePlumeCome With Fierce Grace ... LP
International Anthem, 2023. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
A stunning achievement as a leader from Alabaster DePlume – material that's maybe some of the most powerful he's ever given us, even though the core of the record comes from the same sessions as his previous album, Gold! As with that record, the material here was originally performed at the Total Refreshment Centre in London, but is then completely transformed by DePlume as he works his way through the recordings – shifting things around, changing up the original sounds, and letting the selection and mixing process create the album's sound in the best International Anthem style – but also at a level that showcases DePlume's compositional ear! Alabaster plays tenor, guitar, and keyboards – and other musicians include James Howard on guitar, Tom Herbert on bass, and Sarathy Korwar on drums and tablas – and there's a number of other voices who drift through the mix as well, sometimes with full lyrical contributions, sometimes in more subtle ways. Titles include "Did You Know", "Levels Of Human", "Not Even Sobbing", "Sibomandi", "Greek Honey Slick", "Broken Again", "Naked Like Water", "The Best Thing In The World", and "To That Voice & Say". ✨✧ Fela & Egypt 80Original Suffer Head/I.T.T. ... CD
Barclay/Wrasse, Early 80s. Used ... $7.99
Don't let the later date fool you – because this is excellent material from Fela, and he kicks just as hard with his Egypt 80 group as he did with Africa 70! The set's got two albums on it – and the titles from Original Sufferhead ("Original Sufferhead" and "Power Show") both have amazing keyboards, with this strange other-worldly sound that makes it feel like Sun Ra has suddenly joined the group. The arrangements are amazingly tight, and a bit more sophisticated than usual. The I.T.T. album is represented by one long track – the legendary "International Thief Thief" – which is Fela's monster attack on global capitalist enterprise. If only Noam Chomsky could make his politics this funky! Great stuff, and with the excellent Barclay mastering and packaging. CD

✨✧ Ibelisse Guardia Ferragutti & Frank RosalyMestizx ... LP
International Anthem/Nonesuch, 2024. New Copy Gatefold ... $22.99 24.99
We first fell in love with the work of Frank Rosaly when he was a drummer here on the Chicago jazz and improv scene – but this album is something completely different overall, and a real evolution of Frank's talents both as a percussionist and musical visionary! The album's a collaboration with partner Ibelisse Guardia Ferragutti – who sings throughout, and also brings in keyboards, guitar, and percussion – in ways that pull together strands of Brazilian and Puerto Rican roots, but with the kind of fresh, genre-changing approach you'd expect from the International Anthem label! Along the way, the duo are joined by other great musicians – including Ben LaMar Gay on cornet, Matt Lux on electric bass, Mikel Patrick Avery on percussion, and Bill MacKay on guitar. The percussion and voice hold strong throughout, produced in a really warm and soulful style – on titles that include "Saber Do Mar", "Barro", "Turbulencia", "Descend", "Bless Thee Mundane", "Invocacao", and "Desetejer". Jordan HamiltonProject Freedom ... CD
Mello Music Group, 2024. New Copy ... $6.99 12.99
Jordan Hamilton locates this album halfway between Chicago and Detroit – which is maybe a good way to think about his style of music – as it's partly the mix of acoustic instrumentation, jazz improvisation, and inventive production from the scene around International Anthem – and partly the very underground legacy of electronic expression that's run through Detroit from the techno years onwards! Hamilton's a cellist, but the record's hardly the familiar mode of music from that instrument – as it mixes in touches from jazz, hip hop, ambient, and other modes – all in this shifting array of sounds that's completely hypnotic, and very wonderful! The notes are a bit vague on who does what, and when – but that's also part of the appeal of the larger soundscape of the album. Titles include "Union Station", "Kali's Prayer", "Jackie Robinson", "No Hope", "Roses", "Wisdom Crow", "Fun", "Project Hughey", "Dear John", and "Freekingdom". CD

Mighty Clouds Of JoyIt's Time ... LP
ABC, 1974. Very Good+ ... $7.99
A landmark blend of gospel spirit and 70s soul – and one of the greatest moments ever from The Mighty Clouds Of Joy! Like so many other soul artists before them, these guys have voices that are steeped in the best traditions of gospel – but rather than giving up their roots and going secular, they just cut this set with the best Philly soul help of the time – arrangements from Wade Marcus, and a smoking Sigma Sound lineup that includes work from Norman Harris, Vince Montana, Bobby Eli, Ronnie Baker, and Earl Young – all of whom give the record the vibe of the best Philly International material from the time! Dave Crawford produced, but the set almost feels more Gamble & Huff than anything else – as the quintet's vocals really soar on tracks that include "Stoned World", "Time", "Mighty Cloud Of Joy", "The Master Plan", and "Heart Full Of Love". O'Jays & The MomentsO'Jays Meet The Moments ... LP
Stang, 1974. Very Good+ ... $11.99
Hard funky soul album that features half Moments tracks and half O'Jays tracks. The O'Jays stuff is the stuff that they recorded before going to Philly International, like "Peace" and "Be My Girl" – real sweet soul gems, if you don't know them. Our fave, though, is the monster track "Ride You Pony Girl", a great rolling funky cut by the Moments, with cool piano triplets on the intro! Very nice, with a very dope sound! LP, Vinyl record album

Better Days/Lawson (Japan), 1980. New Copy (reissue)... $27.99 49.99
A Japanese dub classic from Masahito "Pecker" Hashida – a percussionist with a real love of classic Jamaican sounds, which lead him to Tuff Gong and Channel One – where he recorded this important album at the start of the 70s! The album's a really unique hybrid, and maybe echoes some of the interesting mixes taking place from UK artists at the time too – as Pecker has some important help here from Sly & Robbie, Aston Familyman Barrett, Judy Mowatt, and others – but also does some of the music back home in Tokyo as well, with other Japanese players. The tracks are mostly instrumental, but have some vocal moments – and titles include "Pecker Power", "Dr Humanity", "Mystic Cosmic Vibration", "Concrete Jungle", "Jamming", "Militant Sniff", and "International Orchitis". ResavoirResavoir (2023) ... CD
International Anthem, 2023. Used ... $2.99 6.99
The second set from Resavoir – a project headed by Chicago producer/musician Will Miller, an artist who's had a lot of experience in the higher reaches of the hip hop scene – but who here gives himself over to much more personal, introspective modes! Yet the album's not a solo effort either, as Miller works with a host of other musicians in a groove that's fluid, often soulful, and yet very laidback – maybe an answer to some of the more meditative projects on the International Anthem label, as the work moves at the pace of some of those, but with more of an electric soul at the core. Titles include "Midday", "Sunset", "Future", "Blutopia", "Facets", "Heavenly", and "Inside Minds". CD
