A fantastic pairing of the vocals of Abbey Lincoln and the tenor sax of Stan Getz – one that's captured here for the very first time on record, at a point that's just a few months shy of Stan's too-early death! Both players had really grown a lot during the 80s – and the match here is wonderful – the maturing tones of Stan's tenor, and Abbey's way of doing more with less than ever before – a special sort of magic that works equally well on familiar and unfamiliar tunes! The rest of the group here is equally great – Hank Jones on piano, Charlie Haden on bass, Mark Johnson on drums, and Maxine Roach guesting on viola on two tracks too. Arrangements are by Abbey – and titles include "When I'm Called Home", "And How I Hoped For Your Love", "Time For Love", "Summer Wishes Winter Dreams", "You Made Me Funny", and "Bird Alone". CD
Tremendous work from singer Helen Merrill – one of the few 50s vocalist who seems to get better and better with age! The set has Helen working with arrangements from the great Torrie Zito – a legendary talent for scoring sophisticated backdrops during the 60s, of a sort that really helped change the way that vocals were recorded in jazz. Zito brings a level of sophistication to the set that's perfect for Helen's accomplished style – and the album also boasts some nice instrumental contributions from players that include trumpeter Lew Soloff, bassist George Mraz, and Zito himself, who plays both acoustic and electric piano on the set! Titles include "Lilac Wine", "Something I Dreamed Last Night", "You", "Portrait Of Helen Merrill", "The Island", and "One More Walk Around The Garden". LP, Vinyl record album

Randy Weston & Melba Liston —
Volcano Blues ... CD Verve/Gitanes, 1993. Used ...

Randy plays beautifully on a set of blues-inspired tracks arranged by Melba Liston – working with horn players that include Teddy Edwards, Benny Powell, Wallace Roney, and Hamiet Bluiett to come up with some really striking tunes that differ greatly from a lot of his other classic work! Johnny Copeland makes an unfortunate appearance on vocals and guitar on the first track – but once you get past that number and its cliched approach to blues, the CD's a great one. (And heck, we'll be honest – we start this album on track 2!) Titles include "Sad Beauty Blues", "Chalabati Blues", "In Memory Of", "Harvard Blues", "Volcano", and "The Nafs". CD

A really unique project from the Serbian underground of the 80s – a record that mixes together global elements, electronics, and some other live instrumentation – all in a way that's as tuneful as it is experimental, and which has a nice sort of post-punk sense of freedom throughout! The music reminds us a lot of some of our favorite work from farther up on the European scene – particularly records on the Crammed label, as this set shares a similar sense of wider sensibilities coming into play with new technologies of the time, yet handled in a way that's very personal and poetic. The duo bring a bit of vocals to the record, but most of the music comes from the interplay between acoustic and electronic elements – on titles that include "Gitanes", "Gajeiro", "Rhinoceros II, "Sometimes At Nine", "In The Sky", and "Rumba Balcana".
