Chris ConnorChris Connor Sings The George Gershwin Almanac Of Song ... CD
Atlantic, 1957. Used 2 CDs ... $11.99
A real standout in Chris Connor's legendary run for Atlantic Records – and a unique double-length set that was almost her answer to some of the 2LP Verve songbook sessions from Ella Fitzgerald! Like those, this album's based upon the work of a single composer – and features key Gershwin compositions from the 20s and 30s, redone here with a moody, mellow, jazz-based approach – one that unlocks even more darkness in these tunes than you might expect! Instrumentation is by a number of different small groups – assemblages of players who include Joe Newman on trumpet, Sam Most on clarinet, Herbie Mann on flute, Milt Jackson on vibes, Al Cohn on tenor, and Ralph Sharon on piano – all working with arrangements by Sharon, Ray Ellis, and Stan Free. The album features a whopping 34 titles in all – with tracks that include "A Foggy Day", "Strike Up The Band", "Nice Work If You Can Get It", "Little Jazzbird", "My One & Only", "That Certain Feeling", "Fascinating Rhythm", "Our Love Is Here To Stay", "Liza", "Soon", and "I Can't Be Bothered Now". CD features 2 bonus tracks – "Strike Up The Band" and "Summertime", done in different takes. CD

Buddy DeFranco & Oscar PetersonBuddy DeFranco & Oscar Peterson Play George Gershwin ... LP
Norgran, 1954. Near Mint- ... $39.99
As the title indicates, the session features Buddy DeFranco and Oscar Peterson – but the real guy we wanna thank here is arranger Russ Garcia! Unlike some of the other Verve "soloist with the Peterson Trio" albums of the 50s, this one is more of a shared effort that has Buddy and Oscar both acting as soloists over larger backings directed by Garcia. Russ takes a lot of cues from Ralph Burns on the session – and like Burns on earlier Verve recordings, he sets things up so that the orchestrations never overwhelm the players – and instead simply augment their moods and shade in the colors of the tunes. We especially like Peterson in this format – as he was so often recorded heavily in trio format – but DeFranco is great too, snaking out over the top of the strings with a lean and angular tone on clarinet. Titles include "They Can't Take That Away From Me", "I Got Rhythm", and "It Ain't Necessarily So". LP, Vinyl record album
(Yellow label Norgran pressing, with trumpeter logo and deep groove. Cover has some clear tape on the top & bottom seams, but looks nice overall.)

Roland HannaGershwin Carmichael Cats ... LP
CTI, 1982. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $13.99
A really unique album from pianist Roland Hanna – a set that allows him to show off all the amazing keyboard flow that he has on solo and trio dates – but in the larger space of a CTI Records session! Arrangements are by Don Sebesky – and while full, they're never overwhelming – so that the acoustic piano of Roland is always right out front, as dexterous as ever – with slight backing from a larger group of mixed electric and acoustic elements! The tunes are Gershwin and Hoagy Carmichael numbers, but that hardly matters at all – as the approach here is very unique and personal – and the album does feature trumpet from Chet Baker on one track, and soprano sax from Ronnie Cuber on another. Titles include "Skylark", "Stardust", "Oh Bess Where's My Bess", "The Nearness Of You", and "Embraceable You". LP, Vinyl record album

Teddi King with Dave McKennaThis Is New – Teddi King Sings Ira Gershwin ... LP
Inner City, 1978. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $2.99
A very laidback little album from Teddi King – a set that mostly features Teddi singing with only piano accompaniment from Dave McKenna, and which also features a few solo tracks by Dave as well! Teddi's voice has changed a bit since the 50s – but in a good way, with a bit more human qualities amidst the trademark trills – especially in the company of McKenna's thoughtfully crafted piano lines. The titles are all Gershwin tunes, taken at a very relaxed pace – and tracks include "Soon", "Long Ago & Far Away", "Here's What I'm Here For", "Isn't It A Pity", "My Ship", "How Long Has This Been Going On", and "But Not For Me". Charlie ShaversGershwin, Shavers, & Strings ... LP
Bethlehem, 1955. Very Good ... $11.99
The music of George Gershwin, but taken to some great late night territory by the trumpet of Charlie Shavers! The album's a sublime "with strings" date – one that has Charlie blowing beautifully over backdrops from Sy Oliver – charts that certainly use some string instruments, but often in a very spare, mellow way – so that once Shavers gets going, his trumpet is right out front – often with a beautifully moody tone! Titles include "I've Got A Crush On You", "Embraceable You", "Liza", "Summertime", "But Not For Me", and "It Ain't Necessarily So". LP, Vinyl record album
(Mono red label pressing with deep groove. Cover has light surface wear & aging.)

Zoot SimsZoot Sims & The Gershwin Brothers (SACD pressing) ... CD
Pablo/OJC, 1975. Used ... $16.99
Way more than just a Gershwin Songbook sort of record – thanks to some tremendous blowing here by Zoot Sims, who's mellowed nicely with age, and comes up with a wonderful sound for the record! It may just be us, but there seems to be a lot more soul in Zoot's horn than ever before – more humanity, and a sort of pausing, almost faltering approach to the tunes that takes them way past their overdone versions. The rest of the group includes Oscar Peterson, Joe Pass, George Mraz, and Grady Tate – but the Sims' sound is the main star of the set – and it's really wonderful! Titles include "The Man I Love", "Embraceable You", "Summertime", "Isn't It A Pity", "I've Got A Crush On You", and "Lady Be Good". CD
(Out of print with a punch through the barcode. Hybrid SACD pressing – plays on regular players too!)

Mel Torme, Francis Faye, Johnny Hartman, & OthersComplete George Gershwin Porgy & Bess ... LP
Bethlehem, 1956. Very Good 3LP Box Set ... $3.99 5.99
One of our favorite recordings ever of George Gershwin's Porgy & Bess – done by Bethlehem Records in the mid 50s, and featuring nearly every one of the label's great talents at the time! The choice of the lead characters is a bit odd – as Mel Torme plays Porgy and Francis Faye plays Bess – but both singers are actually pretty darn great for the set, and really bring a lot out of the tunes. Plus, the other artists on the set really keep things interesting – as the collection features vocal performances by Johnny Hartman, Frank Rosolino, Betty Roche, Bob Dorough, and Sallie Blair. Plus, the whole thing's presented as Gershwin wrote it – complete with narration by Al Jazzbo Collins, and a number of strong instrumental passages. Music is performed by groups led by Russ Garcia, Duke Ellington, Pat Moran, and Stan Levy – and players are an array of the best of both the New York and LA scenes at the time! LP, Vinyl record album

Collectors Choice, 1959. Used ... Out Of Stock
A really wonderful take on Porgy & Bess and other Gershwin standards by Pearl Bailey – there's just something about her naturally rich, bluesy, husky tone on these tunes that's simply wonderful! The backing is often well measured, but, occasionally a bigger sound and chorus vocals kick in. For the most part Pearl owns this stuff, giving warmth and resonance lost on more showbizzy takes on the style and compositions. Titles include "I Got Plenty Of Nothin". "I Got Rhythm", "Summertime", "Lady Be Good", "A Foggy Day", "They Can't Take That Away From Me", "Bess You Is My Woman", "It Ain't Necessarily So", "Clap Yo Hands" and more. CD

Verve, 1957. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
One of the hippest takes ever on the Porgy & Bess score – done in duet format by Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong, in a fuller spirit than their other albums for Verve! Like many late 50s albums of Gershwin's score, this one was issued in advance of the film with Sidney Poitier – but unlike most, this is less of a cash-in affair, and really takes Gershwin's music on its own – serving it up with that newly serious style that Verve was hitting with some artists, especially Ella, in the latter half of the 50s. Most tracks have relatively full backings – strings and jazz orchestrations – and the double-length set features 15 tracks that include "Buzzard Song", "I Got Plenty O Nuttin", "My Man's Gone Now", "I Wants To Stay Here", "Summertime", "It Ain't Necessarily So", "What You Want Wid Bess", "There's A Boat Dat's Leavin Soon For New York", "Oh Lawd I'm On My Way", and "A Woman Is A Sometime Thing". Excellent work from Hodges – soloing beautifully on a set of standard Gershwin tunes, over wonderfully warm arrangements by Russ Garcia, in the best manner of the Verve "with strings" style. Sunnyside, 2023. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The music of George Gershwin, but taken in a very different way than you might expect – yet that's maybe no surprise, given the long legacy of creative piano work we've loved from the great Denny Zeitlin! The tunes are all familiar Gershwin standards, but Denny often uses them as rough inspirations, then transforms them into these beautiful sound paintings of his own – still faithful to the spirit and ideas of the originals, yet nicely abstracted, and filled up with the kind of incredible tones and colors that Zeitlin can give us when he's set free in a solo setting like this. In fact, the format may well be one of the most striking examples of Denny's longstanding talents that we've heard in years – and titles include "I Was Doing All Right", "The Man I Love", "Summertime", "Bess You Is My Woman Now", "I've Got A Crush On You", and "How Long Has This Been Going On". A really cool set from the Italian scene of the 70s – one that features very hip vocals from the great Shirley Bunnie Foy, set to lean instrumentation that makes the whole thing nicely different than just a standard jazz vocal session! Shirley plays percussion next to her vocals, and the set features some mighty nice organ and piano from Sonnie Taylor – plus added percussion by a third player too, all with a vibe that makes for some really unusual tracks that have the piano and percussion dancing around with a loose, open vibe – which Shirley is only happy to explore with these vocals that unravel in a completely wonderful way – all sorts of personal inflections that groove with the rhythms, in a unique style that goes way past jazz – maybe with some of the righteous energy of Nina Simone at her hippest! Even at this early point in their career, the Modern Jazz Quartet were plenty proud of their relation to and reception in Paris – almost rubbing their international fame in the faces of other American combos with the title and cover of this record! The set's still got the quartet at their crisp early best – before any of the sometimes too academic or too serious tones of later sides – and tracks are mostly shortish, ringing out with especially nice vibes from Milt Jackson. A stone cooker – and one of the best versions of Porgy & Bess recorded in a jazz format! It's a slightly-forgotten fact that at the time of the big late 50s film version of Porgy & Bess, there was a bit of trouble with the soundtrack – so the market was flooded with other versions of Gershwin's score in a hope to fill the void. This is one of the best of that bunch – a very well-done set of tunes arranged and conducted by Bill Potts, recorded with a strong set of soloists that include Al Cohn, Gene Quill, Zoot Sims, Art Farmer, Bill Evans, Charlie Shavers, Bob Brookmeyer, and Harry Edison. Tracks are the usual batch of Porgy & Bess numbers – "I Loves You Porgy", "It Ain't Necessarily So", "My Man's Gone Now", "A Woman Is A Sometimes Thing", "Summertime" – all woven together wonderfully in a rich tapestry of sound, with some particularly evocative solos. CD

The tunes are all from Porgy & Bess, all the famous Gershwin numbers – but they're performed solo, in a very loose style by pianist Enrique Villegas – who actually delivers two different side-long readings of the themes, making for a record that's a real study in contrasts, and a great illustration of the improvisational genius of Villegas – a talent that sometimes gets overlooked on the global scene! The record's got a fascinating vibe – almost like when Dave Burrell takes on material from familiar sources – and Enrique weaves together strands from "Summertime", "My Man's Gone Now", "Bess You Is My Woman", "Oh Lawd I'm On My Way", "Bess Oh Where's My Bess", "There's A Boat That's Leaving Soon", and "It Ain't Necessarily So". One of the few truly strong and original jazz LPs on the Charlie Parker label – and one of the best early sides by Slide! Despite a hokey title and cover image, the record really has a lot going on – and shows Slide stretching out as an arranger from his days at Atlantic. Side one features the extended "Cloister" dance suite – a 4 part work composed and arranged by Slide, showing his more expansive approach to jazz, one that he'd realize more strongly in European settings of the 60s and 70s. Players include Willie Thomas, Hobart Dotson, Benjamin Jacobs-El, and George Coleman – and the piece comes off wonderfully, very hip, but still swinging and soulful. A real lost treasure from Art Farmer – a tremendous album that hardly ever shows up in the history books, and which, to our knowledge, appears here on CD for the first time ever – plus a bonus album of earlier Farmer work with the Mundell Lowe Septet! Many Faces is a rare 1964 jazz side for the mostly-pop Scepter label – featuring Farmer at the head of a small group working with Tommy Flanagan on piano, Charles McPherson on alto, and Steve Swallow or Ron Carter alternating on bass. The album was done under the direction of Tom McIntosh – the brilliant young composer who had a magical talent for blending together modern and lyrical modes while still keeping a strong degree of soul. McIntosh contributed a few tunes to the set, as did Dennis Sandole – the nearly-forgotten trumpeter from the Philly scene of the 50s. There's a dark beauty to this session that surpasses even many other Farmer sides from the time – and titles include "Hyacinth", "Ally", "Happy Feet", "Minuet In G", and "Saucer Eyes". 1958's Porgy & Bess finds Farmer playing trumpet for guitarist Mundell Lowe's Septet on a nice set of material from Gershwin – including lesser known numbers from the original play. Players include Tony Scott on clarinet and baritone, Ben Webster on tenor and either George Duvivier or Osie Johnson on the kit. Titles include "Summertime", "Bess, You Is My Woman", "I Love You Porgy", "Redhead Woman", "There's A Boat That's Leaving Soon For New York", "It Ain't Necessarily So" and more. CD

You certainly could not be faulted for overlooking the Columbia recordings, in the years before Aretha worked with producer Jerry Wexler and pretty much revolutionized soul and pop music to come – we've done that ourselves. But this early stuff shows just how hugely, and diversely talent Aretha always was. More tender, soaring and gentle material for Aretha, beautiful stuff that's well chosen for this 18 track set: "My Little Brown Book", "Trouble In Mind", "Love For Sale", "Skylark", "How Glad I Am", "Are You Sure", "That Lucky Old Sun", "Cold, Cold Heart"., "It Ain't Necessarily So", "Try A Little Tenderness" and more. ✨✧ Joe HendersonPorgy & Bess ... CD
Verve, 1997. Used ... Out Of Stock
Late work from the tenor legend Joe Henderson – his last album for Verve – leading an impeccable core combo and guests through the Gershwins' classic Porgy & Bess! The players including Jon Scofield on guitars, Tommy Flanagan on piano, Stefon Harris on vibes, Dave Holland on bass, Jack Dejohnette on drums, Conrad Herwig on trombone – plus guest vocalists Chaka Kahn on on number and Sting on another. Henderson's take on Porgy & Bess is respectful to the source material, but he makes it his own, a slow rolling, unfussy take on the material that goes over really well. Act I is made up of a brief intro, plus "Summertime", "Here Come De Honeyman/They Pass By Singin" and "My Man's Gone Now", Act II includes "I Got Plenty Of Nothin", "Bess, You Is My Woman Now", "I Love You Porgy" and more, and Act III wraps it up with "There's A Boat Dat's Leavin Soon For New York" and "Oh Bess, Where Is My Bess".
