Seminal ESP work from Albert Ayler – a unique session done as a soundtrack to a short (and weird!) film from experimental director Michael Snow! The lineup is a bit different than some of Ayler's other ESP albums – and features Don Cherry on trumpet and cornet, John Tchicai on alto, Roswell Rudd on trombone, Gary Peacock on bass, and Sunny Murray on drums. At times, the record's got a bit of a "new thing" vibe – a bit more spacious and sonic than some of Ayler's other material – but at other times, it burns with an intensity that's almost harder and freer than any of Albert's trio dates of the 60s. Incredibly groovy work from a set of German crime films of the late 60s and early 70s – all in a very mod and jazzy mode! The music was all done by the legendary Gert Wilden – who also weighed in for Crippled Dick with the excellent Schulmadchen Report collection – and the overall feel is very much in the mode of some of the best Peter Thomas soundtracks from the same generation. There's lots of great twists and turns in the arrangements – and the tunes are not just jazzy, but also feature some great use of organ, vocals, and odd production – making for some wonderfully swinging tracks that have a really offbeat sound. As usual, the whole thing's packaged with some great Crippled Dick touches – and the CD features a total of 20 tracks that include "Oriental Twist", "Desert Hips", "Murder Beat", "Green Spider Theme", "Rolf Torring", "Piano Blues", and "White Cargo". We love this Jazz Liisa series from Finland – as it features unreleased work from the 70s, but which matches the quality of some of our favorite German and Japanese jazz records of the time! The first half of the set was recorded for Finnish radio, and features a group that really shows the power of that scene at the time! The lineup features trumpeter Mike Koskinen at the helm – blowing in a much more outside way than some of his later studio albums, with a cascading array of tones and soundshapes that recall some of the hipper British work of the end of the 60s – such as records like Mike Westbrook or Michael Gibbs – both of whom would be good comparisons here, especially in the tension between the idea of the group, and the strong solos of the individual members. Other players include Juhani Aaltonen on tenor and flute, Mircea Stan on trombone, Kaj Backlund on trumpet, Pekka Poyry on flute and soprano sax, Olli Ahvenlahti on piano and Fender Rhodes, and Edward Vesala on drums – and titles include "PS DC", "Murusia 2", "Numero Puolitoista", "Song For Sally", and "Peretelmia". On the second half, Otto Dorner's just the conductor on the set – but it's also clear that he's a very musically-minded fellow, as the action he gets from the group on the session is really wonderful! The players are all sharp-edged instrumentalists who represent the cream of the Finnish jazz scene of the time – Juhani Aaltonen on tenor and flute, Markku Johansson on trumpet, Seppo Paakkunainen on baritone, and Christer Boustedt on alto – all musicians who really bring a lot of their individual voices to the performance, and are given great space to solo by Donner – in a way that reminds us of some of the more open-ended bigger band performances from the MPS Records releases of the early 70s. Klaus Nomi's standing here on the cover with the oversized cabaret costume he used famously backing David Bowie – but this early solo album definitely has the singer very much in his own territory overall! Some of the songs are a weird reworking of older European cabaret mode, or Brechtian song ideas – given this strange post-punk twist, and set to rockish backings that are a very unusual contrast to the more operatic leanings in Klaus' vocal style – almost this Liquid Sky moment where an amnesiac opera singer wanders into a downtown New York club and happens to take the stage. Other tracks are moodier and more spacious – and work together with the straighter rock songs to make the whole thing feel like a larger conceptual album, even though that sort of thing wasn't really what Klaus, or the rest of the scene were going for at the time. Titles include "Nomi Song", "You Don't Own Me", "Nomi Chant", "Total Eclipse", "The Cold Song", and "Keys of Life". CD

A really unusual set of recordings from pianist Bud Powell – tracks recorded in his overseas home, solo – a setting that puts the keyboard magic of Powell in a similar sound to that of Art Tatum, who'd recorded in such a way the decade before! At some level, these might be the most compelling recordings that Bud made at the time – as there's an intimacy that's wonderful, and an inherent swing that makes you realize how much Powell was always driving the group – even when he was working with top-shelf drummers and bassists. Plus, the solo mode maybe also opens up a current of humanity past the Bud's skills on the keys – which makes the whole record all that much more powerful. Sure, the politics seem a bit silly now – but the track's still one of Prince's last really compelling hits. It's got a totally infectious hook, a spare Timmy Thomas-ish beat, and a strangely captivating vocal that really sticks with us! The flip's a bit silly – a 10 minute extended number with a silly jam kind of feel – but it's also a great testament to the freedom that Prince was allowed on his 12" singles – which makes them every bit as essential as his albums. 12-inch, Vinyl record

A masterpiece of spacey soul by the great Asha Puthli – a really unique 70s singer who has this incredible vocal range, and a great way of using it amidst slinkily soulful tracks – a bit like Minnie Riperton, or maybe like some of the Sylvia Striplin work with Roy Ayers! The sound here is handled by Dieter Zimmermann – a German producer who adds in all these great keyboards that go perfectly with Asha's vocals – often hitting a midtempo pace that's quite different than some of the more disco-based material she'd record later on in the 70s. Titles include the standout break track "Space Walk", which is one of our all time favorite obscure soul tracks – and other tracks include "Wonder Why", "Hello Everyone", "Flying Fish", "The Devil Is Loose", "Good Night", and "Say Yes". An 80s electro-pop classic from Peter Schilling – one of a handful of German artists who managed to crack the record racks over here at the time – thanks to his strong use of English language on most of the tracks, and his classic "Major Tom" track, which was a nice reference to Bowie's "Space Oddity"! There's a nicely catchy vibe to the record – not as commercial as Nena, but more straightforward than Trio – although very much in the territory of both, given the way that Schilling uses spare electric rhythms and keyboards on most of the instrumentation. In addition to the two-part version of "Major Tom (Coming Home)", other titles include "Only Dreams", "Lifetime Guarantee", "I Have No Desire", "Let's Play", "Error In The System", and "The Noah Plan". Great live material from Shepp – not out or crazy, but also not spiritual or hippy dippy, either. The record's kind of a perfectly soulful straight ahead set – in a mode that hints at the traditional direction Shepp would take at the time, but with a lot more interesting moments. The group's a quartet with Charles Greenlee on trombone, Dave Burrell on piano, Cameron Brown on bass, and Beaver Harris on drums – and the tracks feature Shepp soloing with a lot of soul, and criss crossing styles from track to track. "U-jamaa" is a strong straight number – and the 3 other titles are "Lush Life", "Crucificado" and "Miss Toni". CD

Incredible jazz rock from Soft Machine – recorded after Robert Wyatt left the group, and for some reason, a bit overlooked because of that fact – but still a pretty darn great album, awash in long tracks with plenty of jazzy touches – still finely crafted in the sublime crossover mode that was coming out of the UK at the time, and of which Soft Machine was one of the strongest proponents! There's loads of strong fusiony moments built around keyboards and guitar – almost funky at times, and stretching forth with a freely exploratory sound! 12 cuts in all – with titles that include "Day's Eye", "Down The Road", "The German Lesson", "The French Lesson", "Nettle Bed", "Bone Fire", and "Snodland". One of the most righteous albums ever from saxophonist John Tchicai – and that's saying a heck of a lot, given the depth of his other work! This rare late 60s date for MPS is a tremendous extension from Tchicai's earlier work, even his other European sessions – as it features John recording with a very large ensemble on side one – a full jazz orchestra with a really groundbreaking approach to its music – an ambitious, fully expressive ensemble led by trumpeter Hugh Steinmetz, who also solos strongly on the record as well. Steinmetz also contributed the title composition "Afrodisiaca", which is a 22 minute long piece played by the orchestra – and Tchicai wrote most of the tracks on side two, which are played by a smaller group, but with a similarly expressive feel! These tracks include "This Is Heaven", "Lakshimi", "Heavenly Love On A Planet", and "Fodringsmontage" – and all feature amazing solo lines from John on alto and soprano sax. CD

Heady instrumental work from Tetragon – a German group who can really play their instruments with great virtuoso tendencies, but who work here in a more home-grown setting that's quite different from overblown classic rock of the time! The record features loads of great keyboards – including organ and clavinet – clearly trained in jazz and classical music, but turned towards a much more rock-based style of jamming – layered in with guitar, bass, and drums – and all delivered with an edge that's much rougher than you might expect – kind of the small label production you'd find for a psych record, which really keeps this one away from the ELP side of the spectrum. Titles include "Irgendwas", "A Short Story", "Nature", "Fugue", and "Jokus". CD features full notes, and the bonus track "Doors In Between". CD

A beautifully personal album from Ralph Towner – a set that's maybe got more going on than just a diary – as the whole thing has a very poetic approach to the sound, one that's really in keeping with the new modes of expression that Towner helped bring to ECM! There's a bit of overdub at times – so that Ralph also adds in a bit of piano and gong next to his more familiar work on 12-string and classical guitar – both instruments used in ways that are very different than the new acoustic underground that emerged in the 60s, and than most other jazz uses of the instruments too. It's almost as if Towner were learning lessons from Derek Bailey about unusual ways to approach the instrument – but then went off in more tuneful, melodic pursuits – on titles that include "Icarus", "Mon Enfant", "Dark Spirit", "Entry In A Diary", "Erg", and "The Silence Of A Candle". Late sound library grooves from the UK scene – but still pretty darn groovy! First up is Metropolis Now – a 1980 set from arranger Dick Walter, with production from Syd Dale – who clearly keeps things in the same groovy style as his own excellent work for Amphonic! Instrumentation is jazzy, but mixed with a good deal of electric funk – almost making the record sound like one of those great electrified big band albums from the mid 70s that were burning big – a groove that's even more surprising coming from an obscure sound library source at the start of the 80s! Titles include "Times Square", "Greyhound Runaround", "Vegas Venue", "Texas Turnaround", "Metropolis Now", and "Pacific Coast Highway". Otto Keller comes up with some warm grooves for Mix & Match – a set that's got the same sweet jazzy overtones as the best German sound library records from the mid 70s! There's a nice sort of sparkle to most of the tunes – some nice 60s easy and bossa influences in the music – and production and instrumentation that's much more mid 70s than you'd guess from the date of the session. Heady work from the German scene of the late 60s – one of the key albums by the first incarnation of Amon Duul, who grew out of the underground commune of the same name! The set's got a loose, almost improvised feel – with some long tracks that definitely make you feel like you're dropping in on the band as they jam together in the studio, mixed with shorter numbers that still somehow manage to convey the same sort of energy, but in a smaller space! Production is nice and open – with some of that murky current of darkness that would come to reign in the Krautrock scene a few years later – and titles include "Mama Duul Und Ihre Sauerkrautband Spielt Auf", "Bitterlings Verwandlung", "Der Garten Sandosa Im Morgentau", and "Ein Wunderhubsches Madchen Traumt Von Sandosa". An all-German version of Peter Gabriel's third album! Peter Gabriel at the top of his solo game – tight, focused, and coming across with a nice sort of edge – one that really sits nicely in the same late 70s generation that includes Bowie in Berlin, early Talking Heads, and some of the darker-minded work on the left side of the mainstream at the time! The guitars have a nice edge, but never dominate – and Gabriel's vocals are totally great – soaring with majesty, but never overblown, and deeply personal in all the right spots – but without any fake soul modes. Instrumentation is right on the money – processed nicely, but never overproduced – and hell, players on the album even include Brit jazz legend Dick Morrisey on a handful of tracks! An early gem on the German Selected Sound library series – one that features work by a number of different artists, and is all the groovier because of that! Hardy's Jet Band dominate the first part of the album – and turn in these killer cuts that mix together fuzzy guitar and funky grooves, with a very cool psychedelic style! That approach continues a bit on the other tracks – equally cool and trippy electric work by Klaus Wuestoff, Jan Troysen, and Gary Pacific – who each get a few tracks on the record! An amazing early bop session from Germany! During the 50s, pianist Jutta Hipp cut a number of straighter sides for Blue Note that were recorded in the US – but this first album has her working with German contemporaries like Joki Freund on tenor sax and Emil Mangelsdorff on alto, carving out a dark little batch of tracks with a sharper edge than you'd expect! Although Hipp's the leader, it's the amazing horn interplay that really makes the record shine – as Mangelsdorff and Freund work in unison on many of the intros to the songs, cutting back and forth like a double-edged sword, then breaking out into wonderfully compact solos. About 3 tracks feature Hipp in a trio, but the remaining 5 feature this quintet – and it's just great! Titles include "Cleopatra", "Mon Petit", "What's New", and "Variations". CD

A second great set of standards from Keith Jarrett – and like the first one, a great reminder to many that the pianist was still very strongly schooled in jazz! Although Keith really opened up ways for pianists to stretch out in the 70s, his move to material like this in the early 80s was a great one – as it moved Jarrett away from some territory that was a bit overly-trod, and managed to bring a new sort of sensitivity to his music! Of course, the whole trio here is really part of the success – bass from Gary Peacock and drums from Jack DeJohnette – both, like Jarrett, players who'd more than had their chance to stretch out, explore new modes, and were bringing all that freedom and experience to play here in a setting that's outwardly conventional, but still plenty darn fresh. Titles include "I Fall In Love Too Easily", "Never Let Me Go", "So Tender", and "Moon & Sand". CD

The jazz community here is pretty small – just a sextet, but one that had a huge impact on the Swiss jazz scene at the time! The group have a vibe that's maybe a bit earlier than the date of the material here – maybe more like some of the early 70s expressions from the American, German, and British jazz worlds – with lots of modal energy in the rhythms, and solos that are strong and freewheeling, but never too far outside – working with a really great sensibility between the members of the group. The music is dynamic, but never in a way that's forced or showoffy – and the set's filled with great originals by members of the group – who include Hans Kennel on trumpet, Paul Haag on trombone, Heiner Althaus on tenor, Armin Keil on piano, and Alex Bally on drums. A sublime meeting of three incredibly well-matched players – all artists who worked together in various formations back in the 60s, but waited another 30 years to record here as a trio! There's an airiness that really uniques all the artists in the trio – a sense of space and grace that's always heard in the piano of Don Friedman and guitar of Atilla Zoller, and which re-emerges wonderfully here in the alto of Konitz – recorded with a crispness and focus that is sometimes missing in other later sessions. The notes hang in space here beautifully – never too academic, but always with the sense of tone and timing that was probably first inspired by Lee's work of the 50s, in recordings that featured guitarist Billy Bauer, who always was clearly an inspiration to the sound of Attilla Zoller. But the actual formation here is more in the mode of the Hans Koller school, as he interpreted some of Konitz ideas in the German scene of the 50s and 60s – and the recording echoes with a sense of perfection that takes us back to some of the Koller/Zoller collaborations for MPS. A heady set from the glory days of the Krautrock scene, and one that's recorded by Conny Plank – but a record that maybe has more of a hard rock vibe overall, one that's very much in keeping with the doom-styled look of the cover! These guys really jam their asses off – not in some sort of spacey experimental way, but instead really romping on the drums, riffing on the guitar, and bustling on basslines that really keep the whole record moving forward – all of which makes for a record that you could easily share with fans of Black Sabbath or Deep Purple – something that might not always be the case for other experimental German work of the time. An album that originally started out as the Duck Stab EP, but was expanded with the addition of Buster & Glen songs – hence the unusual title! The material here is spooky early Residents at their best – almost without comparison to any of their contemporaries, which is saying a lot in this period before so many others were even beginning to approach their weirdness! Instrumentation is often spare, stark, and electronic – almost a precursor to the use of analogue elements that would soon make the German new wave so great, but handled here in murkier modes often combined with distorted vocals and other processing – mostly quite tuneful, but from behind a dark curtain – similar to the way the group always hid their own identity. Key proof that the German MPS label could take an American player, and make them even better! By the time of the 60s, the small combo accordion grooving style of Art Van Damme had waned considerably – sounding a bit dated compared to the changes in American music at the time. However, it took the genius ears at Saba/MPS to bring Art over to Germany – and let him work in a setting that updated his style nicely – with changes in rhythms, different production, and instrumentation that included vibes, flute, guitar, and even some added sax! The 2 albums on the set are two of Art's best for the label – and they go miles beyond his American work of earlier years, taking the accordion into some incredibly sweet grooving territory that sparkles with the best Snowflakes sound! An obscure set of German electronic instrumental work from the start of the 80s – and a set that's maybe got some of the darker, colder sounds of the UK scene of the time, especially the sorts of music that was brewing up from the city of Sheffield! Zeus B Held hits harder and goes deeper than some of his German new wave counterparts – none of the playful modes of the Atatak label crew, and instead a more dystopian use of analog electronics that almost makes you feel like you're trapped in a no man's land between East and West Berlin! A second chapter of rare prog rock from the East German scene – material that's much more obscure than the bigger Krautrock names from the West – who got a lot more circulation at the time, and plenty of attention as the years moved on! That's definitely not the case with these artists – as much of the work here never made it past the Iron Curtain back in the day – and together, the tracks on the set not only showcase a very strong scene that was happening in the GDR, but also follow proggish inclinations that seemed to last a lot longer into the 80s than most of the work from Western Europe. The package is every bit as revelatory as the first volume – a double-length set with cuts from Karat, Bayon, Prinzip, Kleeblatt, Passion, ZOE Band, Karussell, City, Electra, Stern Combo Meissen, Lift, Transit, and many others we'd not heard before! A second entry in this very cool series, but one that's very different than the first – as the "driving" in the title means that most of these tracks have a very cool groove – kind of the darker side of new club music styles of the time, with maybe just a hint of the cold wave generation to come! Given how far back this material goes, the set shows just how much German experiments influenced the rise of UK electronic work in the post-punk generation of early Human League and Cabaret Voltaire – as there's a link here with some of the darker sounds on Rough Trade during that period, and much of the material serves as a great bridge between Krautrock of earlier days and the German new wave of the 80s. Very groovy work from one of Sweden's hippest jazz singers! There's still plenty of acoustic elements in the mix though, too – lots of earthy percussion at the bottom, which links some of these tracks to other styles of the time – even though some of the more unusual tunes here have these great electronic sounds that almost feel like they came from the late 70s German underground! The mix of modes is breathtaking – as if Moebius and Roedelius recorded with musicians from Lagos – shaking off the colder sounds of the Conny Plank side of the spectrum, to come up with a warm new style that's really unique! Guess again, because this mid 70s gem from Frenchman Philippe Besombes easily rivals the most progressive work of the Kraut scene of the time! The album's a collaboration with Jean-Louis Rizet – and features both artists duetting on a variety of analogue electronics – sometimes in a melodic way, but often in more experimental modes that are quite textural at times – and which stand as a key link between initial German electronics in the 70s, and some of the murkier British uses of the instrument a few years later. The baritone sax of German musician Helmut Brandt is at the helm– but the album's equally noteworthy for its strong use of American players Benny Bailey on trumpet, Nat Peck on trombone, and Herb Geller on alto! The concert is one of those wonderful meetings of American and European jazz talents in a large group setting – the kind of mode that cooked up most famously in the Clark Boland Big Band of the 60s – but which also was simmering all over Europe in the decade – as it does here with additional work from Europeans Ack Van Rooyen on trumpet, Stefan Von Dobrzynski on tenor and flute, Gunter Meier on piano, and Siegfried Schmidt on trombone. The tunes are mostly hard-swinging, and exploding with colors – very much in a mid 60s MPS/Saba mode – with a nice balance between individuality and group sound. Titles include "Berlin Calling", "Boris", "Opus C-Moll 794", "Trifi", "Boogie Waltz", and the long "Ferien Suite". CD

Very rare, very obscure material from this important free jazz trio of the German scene in the 70s – a set that features one long performance originally issued on the JG label, despite the FMP-like image on the cover – plus two more tracks from the same year that appear here for the first time ever! "Just For Altena" offers up the power trio at their best – very freewheeling piano from Fred Van Hove, drums from Han Bennink, and tenor from Peter Brotzmann – with intensity that may well surpass the Machine Gun years, and an understanding of each players strengths that means that there's almost no tentative moments at all in the improvisation! "Filet Americain" and "ICP No 17" are from earlier in 1971 – and showcase a different, more sonic side of the trio – some tones that are at the farther end of hearing, which ruminate then blossom into bolder statements, but still often with a very abstracted approach to each instrument. Great stuff – and every bit as essential as any of the better-known Brotzman recordings of the time! CD

A key record in the evolution of the free jazz spirit on the German scene – one that not only has the Machine Gun generation allowing for a bit of extra space and moments of contemplation in their music, but which also opens itself up to work from a slightly older member of the scene as well! The group is great – with Peter Brotzmann on clarinet, alto, tenor, and baritone – plus Fred Van Hove on piano, and Han Bennink on drums, self-made clarinet, and "homemade junk" – joined by trombonist Albert Mangelsdorff, who almost feels as if he's been waiting for the chance to really open up and experiment with the other improvisers – showing sounds that are maybe even more mindblowing than on his own records of the time! A pare of rare European sessions from saxophonist Marion Brown – back to back on a single set! First up is Gesprachsfetzen – a really wonderful collaboration between alto saxophonist Marion Brown and vibist/reedman Gunter Hampel – a set that's maybe one of the sharpest to come out of their work together! The music has maybe even sharper edges than some of Brown's previous records – a dose of some of the European modernism in which Hampel was steeping himself, but also with some more organic, spiritual qualities on the solos – not just Brown's, but the work of trumpeter Ambrose Jackson – who's pretty great here too. AACM legend Steve McCall is also in the group on drums and percussion, along with bassist Buschi Niebergall – and the set was recorded live, with titles that include "Gesprachsfetzen", "Exhibit A", "Babudah", "Tomorrow Is The Beginning Of The End Of Yesterday", and "Aba". In Sommerhausen is one of the key records that alto saxophonist Marion Brown made while working on the German scene at the end of the 60s – an incredibly fruitful period that seemed to unlock all this new energy in Brown's music in a mode that was similar to what happened when Don Cherry started making time on the European scene! Brown's key partner here is Gunter Hampel – who plays vibes, bass clarinet, and percussion – the latter of which is handled by the other members of the group too – a lineup that includes Ambrose Jackson on trumpet, Daniel Laloux on bass, and Steve McCall on drums – playing here before his better-known work with the AACM. Jeanne Lee brings some lovely vocalizations to the set – and titles include "Dance No 1", "Exhibit B", "Il Ne Chant Pas", "The Sound Of A Song", and "Malipieros Midnight Theater". CD

Exactly the kind of record that makes us love sound library records so much – and definitely the sort that sets the style apart from anything else we can think of! Both Sandro Brugnolini and Giorgio Carnini turn in some great work here – a mindblowing mix of modes over the space of ten short tracks – some tunes a cascading array of instrumentation, in a hip groove that's neither American jazz or soundtrack funk, but a special space of its own! Other tunes use an electronic approach that's years ahead of its time – as groovy as 60s analogue, but a lot darker, too – in ways that the rest of the world might not touch until the German new wave. The balance is almost even between swinging groovers and darker electronic cuts – and titles include "Grinta", "Azione CIA", "Scalo Clandestino", "Alambicco Cibernetico", "Strutture Generative", "Omicido Bianco", and "CIA Massacre".
