Don CherryCherry Jam ... LP
Gearbox, 1965. New Copy (reissue)... $21.99 22.99
Never-issued work from Don Cherry – and a really key piece of the puzzle in the career of this legendary trumpeter! The recordings were done for Swedish Radio, with great fidelity – more than just live tracks captured in a club, and instead some really thoughtful material that marks an early pairing of Cherry's talents with the Swedish scene that he would soon call home! Don plays cornet, and the music is maybe a bit inside compared to some of his later Swedish experiments – but still pretty amazing, and a great bridge from his work with Ornette Coleman and Sonny Rollins. Players include Mogens Bollerup on tenor, Atli Bjorn on piano, Benny Nielsen on bass, and Simon Koppel on drums – and titles include the Cherry originals "Priceless", "Nigeria", and "The Ambassador From Greenland" – plus a reading of "You Took Advantage Of Me". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Abdullah IbrahimSolotude ... CD
Gearbox (UK), 2022. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
Beautiful solo work from pianist Abdullah Ibrahim – a player with a sound so rich and rhythmic, his sessions like this are often every bit as captivating as his trio and group recordings! There's a really special sort of poetry going on here – first in the way that Ibrahim brings out these unusual tones in the piano – a warmth that almost feels like a Fender Rhodes at times, even though the instrument is acoustic – secondly in the structure of the tunes, which are sometimes short and very poetic – packing a lot of meaning into just a very short space in sound! To balance that out, the record has many different selections – twenty in all – some older compositions reworked, some less familiar. Titles include "Sotho Blue", "District 6", "Tokai", "Blues For A Hip King", "In Tempo", "Dreamtime", "Nisa", "Mindiff", "Trieste My Love", and "Signal On The Hill". CD
Also available Solotude (180 gram pressing) ... LP 25.99

Charles TolliverConnect ... CD
Gearbox (UK), 2020. New Copy ... $13.99 14.99
A stunner of a set from legendary trumpeter Charles Tolliver – and a record that shows that he's lost none of his brilliance since the years of his 70s recordings for the Strata East label! The format here is a bit like those – long tracks by a small group, with an outward appearance of familiarity – but a clearly resonant sense of individuality right from the very first note! All tracks are originals by Charles, and have that soaring quality that's always made him one of the most righteous talents in jazz – working with a group here that features Jesse Davis on alto, Keith Brown on piano, Buster Williams on bass, and Lenny White on drums. The group's also joined by the great Binker Moses on tenor on two tracks – and titles include "Suspicion", "Copasetic", "Emperor March", and "Blue Soul". CD

New Jazz OrchestraLe Dejeuner Sur L'Herbe (180 gram pressing – with download) ... LP
Verve/Universal (UK), 1969. New Copy (reissue)... $52.99 67.99
A wonderful wonderful set from the British jazz scene of the late 60s – beautifully inventive large ensemble material, done under the direction of Neil Ardley – and featuring some of the best British jazz musicians of the time! The group's a showcase not only for creative young talent in the UK, but also for the growing sense of composition as well – and the music on the set is penned by Ardley, Michael Garrick, Mike Taylor, and Michael Gibbs – as well as new arrangements of work by Miles Davis and John Coltrane. As in the best material from Ardley, Garrick, and Gibbs, there's a really fresh way of coming together for the instrumentation – quite different than large group material in both the US, and even other areas of the 60s European scene – delivered with wonderful imagination by musicians who include Derek Watkins, Henry Lowther, Harry Beckett, and Ian Carr on trumpets; Michael Gibbs and Derek Wadsworth on trombones; Barbara Thompson on flute and soprano sax; Dick Heckstall Smith on tenor and soprano; Frank Ricotti on vibes; and even Jack Bruce on bass! Titles include "Le Dejeuner Sur L'Herbe", "Naima", "Angle", "Ballad", "Dusk Fire", "Study", and "Rebirth". LP, Vinyl record album
(Includes download. Beautiful pressing – in a vintage flipback-style cover, with bonus insert – and new vinyl remastering by Gearbox!)

✨✧ VariousJourneys In Modern Jazz – Great Britain 1965 to 1972 ... LP
Universal (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 2LP ... Out Of Stock
A tremendous tribute to a fantastic moment in jazz – the explosion of new sounds that happened in the British scene from the late 60s onward – a moment of music that barely touched our shores, but which was equally important to the changes taking place in modern jazz in the US! England got on the jazz bandwagon pretty quickly in earlier years – but for decades, most of their music was pretty tied to American styles – ties that broke strongly with work like this – which opened up all these new rhythms, patterns, and possibilities for expression – at a level that the British scene maybe never hit this strongly again! The collection features some incredibly well-chosen tracks that really illustrate the depth of this musical moment – including work from the legendary Landsdowne Series of recordings, and tracks from other labels too – all brought together with detailed notes that really illuminate the music. Titles include "Old San Juan" by Alan Skidmore, "Third Road" by Harry Beckett, "Matinee Days" by Stan Tracey, "Second Coming" by Michael Garrick, "Storm Warning" by Dick Morrissey, "To Segovia" by Mike Taylor, "A Matter Of Time" by Don Rendell, "Brew" by Colin Bates, "With Terry's Help" by John Surman & John Warren, "Waltz" by Mike Westbrook, Greek Variations/VI Kriti (edit)" by Neil Ardley, "Angle" by New Jazz Orchestra, "Don The Dreamer" by Kenny Wheeler & John Dankworth, and "Some Echoes Some Shadows" by Michael Gibbs. LP, Vinyl record album
(A fantastic pressing – remastered and recut by Gearbox – with a 16 page booklet of notes!)
Also available Journeys In Modern Jazz – Great Britain 1965 to 1972 ... CD 29.99
