GearboxGearbox Automatic Turntable ... Turntable
Gearbox (UK), New Item ... $649.99
A little turntable, but with a mighty big sound – thanks to a vacuum tube that really improves the quality of the playback! In a world where so many small turntables are cheap and shoddy, the Gearbox Automatic is wonderfully overbuilt – a compact unit, but with a glass platter and belt drive – all built by Pro-Ject, including the tonearm – which is also fit with a great Ortofon cartridge! Although pricey, the unit is designed to open up, plug in, and play right away – with Bluetooth connectivity that will let you connect to any wireless speakers, or great RCA outputs that will let you plug into a full audio system for even better sound! The controls are simple and elegant – and the whole thing is encased in a clear body that lets you see everything inside. The turntable is also an unusual analog/digital hybrid – as it's internet-enabled, for track tagging and addition to your streaming services too. The unit has its own wifi network, which allows you to connect to your phone or device – so that you can see pop-up artwork of the album that's playing, and also add tracks from the record to your Spotify playlist as well. But even without all that digital mumbo-jumbo, the whole thing is totally cool – great sound, great design, and some higher-end audio components – but all in this very compact package! Turntable

Binker & Moses (Binker Golding/Moses Boyd)Journey To The Mountain Of Forever ... LP
Gearbox (UK), 2017. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $25.99 26.99
That's quite a cover for a record by Binker & Moses – especially as the duo's always quite down-to-earth, and not nearly the kind of proggish act you might expect from the album's image! Yet they've also expanded a bit this time around – not into a full-jamming group, as they mostly stick in their duo mode of Binker Golding on tenor and Moses Boyd on drums – but they also allow for some great guest work from Evan Parker on tenor and soprano, and Byron Wallen on trumpet – two musicians who show the heady company the duo can keep after just a few short years of recording! The album also features a bit of harp, tabla, and additional drums – but as on their wonderful debut, the core energy still comes from the combination of tenor and drums – used in a way that's raw and stripped-down, but still extremely powerful and moving. There's even more spiritual energy here than the first time around – and titles include "Reverse Genesis", "The Departure", "Trees On Fire", "The Shaman's Chant", "Gifts From The Vibrations Of Light", "The Voice Of Besbunu", and "Echoes From The Other Side Of The Mountain". Butcher BrownCamden Session ... CD
Gearbox (UK), 2018. New Copy ... $12.99 13.99
Really fantastic sounds from Butcher Brown – a group who just seem to leap forward more and more with each new release – and who've really hit their groove with this well-recorded performance! The album was recorded live to disc in London – with a superb sound that only further emphasizes the sharp instrumentation that make these guys way more than just another funky combo – the fluid blend of heavy drums, warm keyboards, rich bass, and great interplay between guitar, trumpet, and occasional tenor – handled with the dexterity of a 70s jazz funk supergroup, but with all the lean energy of a funky 45! The tunes are all originals, all nice and long, and wonderfully soulful – and titles include "918", "Camden Square", "Street Pharmacy", and "Fiat". CD

ChiminyoI Am Chiminyo EP ... LP
Gearbox (UK), 2019. New Copy ... $14.99 15.99
Pretty amazing work from Chiminyo – aka jazz drummer Tim Doyle, who also finds a way to trigger samples when he plays – creating this one-man sound on the record that really comes as quite a surprise! All three tracks on the EP were performed live by Chiminyo – and while he's handling drums and percussion, he also works his way through samples that are played live too – not a previously-recorded soundscape, but a complex blend of elements that move between electronic pulses, global sources, and bassy bits that are mighty nice – served up on the tracks "Kandy Lanx", "We'll Never Know", and "Dharma Bodies". Theon CrossFyah ... LP
Gearbox (UK), 2019. New Copy ... $23.99 24.99
Theon Cross plays a tuba, but don't hold that against him – as he's already given us some mighty great music in The Sons Of Kemet – and really steps out here as a leader in a core trio that features the great Moses Boyd on drums and Nubya Garcia on tenor! A few tracks features Wayne Francis stepping in instead of Garcia – but apart from one track that adds trombone, and two that add guitar – the core approach of the record is drums, tenor, and tuba – with Cross handling his instrument with the richness of an acoustic bass at times, and bursting out as a soloist at others! The tenor really gets a lot of play in the mix – and we totally love Nubya from her other work – and the album's a fantastic explosion of fresh power from the London scene. Titles include "Activate", "Candace Of Meroe", "Letting Go", "Radiation", "CIYA", "LDN's Burning", "Panda Village", and "The Offering". LP, Vinyl record album

Tubby HayesSyndicate – Live At The Hopbine 1968 Vol 1 ... CD
Gearbox (UK), 1968. New Copy ... $11.99 12.99
A very very cool live set from the great tenorist Tubby Hayes – one that has him working in an unusual quartet with Louis Stewart on guitar – a setting that makes a really nice change for Hayes! The track are all very long and open – three of the four are past the ten minute mark – and Stewart's guitar often provides this rhythmic comping while Tubby solos – creating blocks of chromatic sound that make for a wonderful counterpart to the sharper, soulful lines from Hayes as he creates with the sort of non-stop energy we love in his live performances. The rest of the group includes Kenny Baldock on bass and Spike Wells on drums – and titles include "The Syndicate", "Gingerbread Boy", "The Inner Splurge", and "The Gentle Rain". CD

Sarathy KorwarMy East Is Your West ... CD
Gearbox (UK), 2018. New Copy 2CD ... $13.99 14.99
A really amazing little record – one that's partly in the "jazz meets Indian" mode of Joe Harriott's experiments of the 60s – but a performance that also brings in a lot more from spiritual jazz, even though most of the instrumentation is more traditional! The set is live, and the tracks are all long – led by Sarathy Korwar on tablas and drums – a player with very pulsating approach, even when gentle – which sets the tone for the ensemble's mix of flute, acoustic guitar, keyboards, flute, sitar, santoor, tabla, alto, and mridangam – all spun out with lots of modal energy, working well together as a force in sound – but also taking some great solo moments too. Titles include great remakes of "The Creator Has A Master Plan" and "Journey In Satchidananda" – plus "Hajj", "Earthy", "Mishrank", "Malkauns", "Mind Ecology", and "A Street In Bombay". CD

Yusef LateefLive At Ronnie Scotts – 15th January 1966 ... CD
Gearbox (UK), 1966. New Copy ... $11.99 12.99
A fantastic lost slice of work from reedman Yusef Lateef – a performance recorded at the legendary Ronnie Scott's club in London, with backing from a trio that features the wonderful Stan Tracey! Tracey was a committed modernist who really helped shape the sound of the UK scene at the time – and his pairing here with Lateef is wonderful, as Stan seems to bring out some of the most spiritual, most exotic sounds from the saxophonist – shaping the music with his own creative and angular work on piano. Yusef blows flute, tenor, shenai, and xun – and overall, the whole thing's got a vibe that really takes us back to the brilliance of his late 50s sessions for Savoy – done with the same mix of modernism, exoticism, and soul. Titles include "Song Of Delilah", "Last Night Blues", "Yusef's Mood", "Angel Eyes", and "Blues For The Orient". CD

Thelonious MonkMonk (Copenhagen 1963) ... CD
Gearbox, 1963. New Copy ... $13.99 14.99
Previously-unreleased live material from the glory days of the Thelonious Monk Quartet – captured right in the middle of that group's famous run on Columbia Records, with fidelity as strong as if the label itself were producing the session! We could say volumes about this group – and we probably already have on these pages – and we're always amazed at the way the richness of the tenor of Charlie Rouse balances out the angular ideals of Monk on the piano – at a level that may well make Rouse one of Monk's greatest musical partners, ever! The rest of the group is equally wonderful – John Ore is a superb bassist, and Frankie Dunlop somehow manages to grab all the rhythm in Monk and Charlie's playing, and make them swing even more. All tracks here are long, and filled with strong solos throughout – on versions of "Nutty", "Monk's Dream", "Body & Soul", "Bye Ya", and "I'm Getting Sentimental Over You". CD

Gearbox, 1963. New Copy (pic cover)... $10.99 11.98
A never-issued performance of this classic tune from the Thelonious Monk songbook – recorded for Danish Radio in 1963, and played by the legendary quartet that featured Charlie Rouse on tenor sax, John Ore on bass, and Frankie Dunlop on drums! The quality is right up there with some of the live material that Columbia has unearthed in recent decades – and Rouse takes a great solo that's worth the price of the single alone! 7-inch, Vinyl record

Dwight TribleMothership ... CD
Gearbox (UK), 2019. New Copy ... $12.99 13.99
One of the most amazing jazz vocalists of our generation returns here with an incredible group – a majestic combo to match all the spiritual inclinations in his music – with work from Kamasi Washington on tenor, Mark De Clive-Lowe on piano, Miguel Atwood Ferguson on viola, and both Carlos Nino and Derf Reklaw on percussion! Dwight Trible on his own is already more than enough to get us to run out and buy a record – but here, the combination of his unique voice with these musicians makes for an album that's an instant masterpiece – and one that even has lots of new colors and styles compared to some of Dwight's previous work! Songs include numbers by older west coast spiritual jazz heavyweights – like Horace Tapscott, Linda Hill, Nate Morgan, James Leary, and Jesse Sharps – mixed with some of Trible's own songs, and versions of work by Carmen Lundy, Oscar Brown Jr, and Donny Hathaway. From top to bottom, start to stop, the album's a treasure – with tracks that include "It's All About Love", "Thank You Master", "Song For My Mother", "Brother Where Are You", "Some Other Time", "These Things You Are To Me", "Desert Fairy Princess", and "Mothership". ✨✧ Butcher BrownLive At Vagabond ... LP
Gearbox (UK), 2017. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A pretty full-on group from the Virginia scene – one that comes on strong with a mix of funky drums, fuzzy guitar, bumping bass, and some great work on trumpet and keyboards! The groove here is almost a psychedelic take on jazz funk from years back – filtered into a very contemporary space, too – almost post-Medeski Martin & Wood, although nothing like that group at all – just in the kind of space that the new freedoms of recent years have opened up! In other words, these guys are pretty funky, but also not slavishly so – especially in any sort of retro mode – and although they're playing live here, there's an electric crackle to the whole proceedings that further ties their collaborative energy together. Titles include "Tunnelvision", "Moses", "Cairo", "Tomahawk", "Lysol", and "Forest 2.0". LP, Vinyl record album

Gearbox (UK), 1972. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Late live work from the legendary Tubby Hayes – but material that still shows the tenor giant at the height of his powers! All tracks are nice and long, and really let Hayes stretch out – not just on tenor, but also on flute – an instrument that he plays with this surprisingly soulful tone, one that's almost a bit raspy at times, and as fluid in solo imagination as his tenor! The rest of the group is nice and lean – really giving Hayes plenty of room in the spotlight – and players include Mike Pyne on piano, Daryl Runswick on bass, and Tony Oxley on drums. The album features long takes on "Alone Together" and "Someday My Prince Will Come" – plus a six minute burning version of "Seven Steps To Heaven". LP, Vinyl record album
