✨✧ VariousEast Africa Highway – More Gems From The Golden Age Of Benga & Rumba ... LP
No Wahala Sounds (UK), Early 80s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Rare singles from the early 80s – most of which get their first global release outside of their regional release in Kenya and Tanzania – served up here in a batch of grooves that are a lot more stripped-down than some of the more slickly-produced West African work of the time! The tunes here really put the guitars in the front of the mix – cascading in these wonderful lines that are completely fluid throughout, and every bit as important to the rhythms as the basslines and percussion. And although there are vocals on the cuts, it often feels as if it's the guitars that are doing most of the "singing" – with a soaring, lilting quality that's very beautiful throughout. Titles include "Manimba" by Orchestra Mjoa One, "Ni Uranjuhigirie" by The Lulus Band, "Margy Sugar Na" by Gem Lucky Jazz, "I Love You Posha" by Founder International Sound, "Ombi" by Orchestra Bima Lee, "Uchawi Ni Mbaya" by Kangundo D Boys, and "Iveti Matuku Aya" by Kyanganga Boys Band. ✨✧ Pauline OliverosWanderer ... LP
Important Records, 1984. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
One of the most lovely albums ever recorded by Pauline Oliveros – the kind of standard-setting set that immediately helped distinguish her as one of the most inventive voices of all time on her instrument! And yes, that instrument is the accordion – but in the hands of Oliveros, it's more of a tool for sonic exploration and tonal surprise – very different than just about any of her predecessors, even the modern ones! The set features two beautiful pieces – the long "Wanderer", which has Oliveros on solo accordion out front of the Springfield Accordion Orchestra – and the moodier "Horse Sings From Cloud", with slow-building passages that mix her own bandoneon with a concertina, harmonium, and accordion. ✨✧ Charlie ParkerNight & Day – The Genius Of Charlie Parker #1 ... LP
Verve, Early 50s. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A classic 50s collection of Verve material by Charlie Parker – and one of those records that will definitely help you understand his genius right from the start! The lineup here is slightly large – wonderful arrangements by Joe Lipman that are a bit orchestral, with strings as well – but never used in styles that get in the way of Charlie Parker's solidly smoking alto sax! In fact, the music is a key example of just what makes Bird so different – as he's right out front, taking off in all his own directions – showing that although part of a group, a musician of his caliber can also take flight in ways that few jazz musicians would have imagined a few years before. The set features incredible readings of the tunes "Temptation", "Lover", "Stella By Starlight", "Dancing In The Dark", and "Laura". LP, Vinyl record album
(Later MGM stereo pressing. Cover has surface wear, some wear on the spine.)

✨✧ EsquivelOther Worlds Other Sounds ... CD
RCA, 1958. Used ... Out Of Stock
One of the most memorable Esquivel albums, and perhaps the first record that really let him hit his fantastic mix of off-beat orchestrations and spacey electronicized production! The arrangements are splendid, with echoey piano lines in the front that seem to trail off into the stratosphere. Behind them, the orchestra swings in a tight rocket-fueled way, soaring and dipping to match the oddly arranged piano lines. Titles include "Playfully", "That Old Black Magic", "Speak Low", "It Had To Be You", and "Night & Day". Plus, the cover's got a groovily attired model, hanging out in a very green lunar scene! CD
(Out of print, booklet has some age spots.)

✨✧ Philip GlassSatyagraha (3CD set) ... CD
Sony (UK), 1985. Used 3 CDs ... Out Of Stock
Amazing work from Philip Glass – his second great opera, and a long-overdue follow-up to Einstein On The Beach – a set of music that's every bit as great as that groundbreaking work, but maybe even with stronger, fuller execution overall! The piece looks at the early political years of Gandhi – the title is a term coined by him, as a reference to his philosophy of truth and love – with words by Constance DeJohng, and these amazing minimalist orchestrations by Glass – filled with the kind of long-spun lines you'd find in his instrumental work, but somehow made even more amazing with the presence of lyrics! Douglas Perry handles the role of Gandhi – and the performance is by the New York City Opera Orchestra and Chorus, directed by Christopher Keene. CD
