The second in Mickey Newbury's American Trilogy – recorded when Newbury was at Elektra Records, a label that was apparantly as unable to find an audience for him as Mercury was a few years earlier – but all these years later it stands just as beautifully of a leftfield bit of spacious, moody genius just about any singer-songwriter record of the period we can think of! Recorded at Nashville's Cinderella Sound Studios, it's really wonderful stuff that defys genre and convention, but is as emotionally connective and sastisfying as anything from the mainstream. Funky funky California – and a great set of rare grooves from the 70s! The folks at Luv N Haight records are up to their old tricks – digging through the crates for the kind of hard-to-find funky tracks that first gave birth to the fame of the Ubiquity label. An unusual Dave Brubeck set from the start of the 60s – surprisingly on Fantasy, given his Columbia fame of the time – and with a slightly different lineup that features the great Bill Smith on clarinet! Raw North Mississippi blues from Fred McDowell – some of best of the 60s – or any other era! Recorded on portable equipment in 1964 and 1965 sessions in Como and Holy Springs, MS and Berkeley, CA – and capturing the buzz of his guitar and grain in his voice so beautifully! A couple tracks feature a second guitar, and just one has additional voices, allowing McDowell to hook you on his own – and he doesn't let go. Fantastic stuff.
