One of the last albums the Four Tops ever issued on Motown – but also one of the best, and a set that really has the group taking off in a strong new direction for the 70s! Frank Wilson's at the production helm, and the set has all these cool little twists and turns that work perfectly with the magnificent harmonies of Levi Stubbs and the group – a mode that draws on all their vocal highlights from older years, but also refits them with a more spacious, more mature sort of sound! The approach is different than that used with the Temptations at the same time – less political, but still flowing with plenty of new ideas – handled by arrangers Jerry Long, Jimmy Roach, and David Van DePitte. The title cut – "Still Waters (Run Deep)" – is a perfect example of this – as the tune's got weirdly wonderful production, almost as watery as the cover image, and a bit of moog buried in there – which comes forward even more on the reprise of the song at the end of the record. A brilliant concert date from Willis Jackson – the second half of material recorded during the Jackson's Action performance! Like his Prestige labelmate Jack McDuff, Willis Jackson could really cook in a live format – opening up his style a lot from studio albums, yet also not getting too sloppy, too overindulgent, or too solo-focused to lose the general groove of the tracks. This set's one of Jackson's finest in the live setting, and features his group with Frank Robinson on trumpet, Carl Wilson on organ, and Pat Azzarra on guitar. Soulful tenor giant Willis Jackson is anything but loose on this classic set – as the album's a smoker, and one with a very tight sound! The group has Carl Wilson playing Hammond with a nicely heavy groove – alongside Frank Robinson on trumpet and Bill Jones on guitar – all held down by the drums of Joe Hadrick, in a combo that's a nice change from some of the more familiar Prestige Records combos! The first solo album that Eddie Kendricks cut after leaving The Temptations – and a great one! Motown genius Frank Wilson produced the whole album, and it's got a really unified feel that you don't always get on Motown albums – possibly proof that the label was really invested in starting Eddie off on a strong solo career. The record's got a wonderful sweet soul sound – with Eddie's great vocals at the center, and some complicated arrangements that work very well on the ballads, and which kick it up on a few tracks, hinting at Eddie's later successful boogie style. Eddie certainly was the "hit man" on this one – a tight album of hard stepping soul tracks, mostly cut in Eddie's famous "boogie" mode of the mid 70s! The Jazzman label hits a whole new level of brilliance – as they turn their funk-trained crate digging skills to the world of spiritual jazz! The collection's an amazing batch of ultra-rare tunes – tracks that take inspiration from the John Coltrane/Archie Shepp work on Impulse Records in the 60s, then run with those roots in bold new directions – soaring, spiritual aims in jazz that reach for new freedoms, but never lapse into the totally-outside modes of free jazz! Instead, there's a really great balance here between structure and struggle – as many tunes often have a good rhythmic pulse, usually modal and soulful, then let the horn solos stretch out more in their own sounds and directions. The mix is amazing, as is the selection of tunes – rare numbers pulled mostly from American independent jazz releases of the 60s and 70s – most of which are as obscure as the funky 45s we normally get from Jazzman. Solid 70s work from Eddie Kendricks – still super-strong in the vocal department, but perhaps a bit less spectacular on the arrangements, at least in comparison to some of his other work at the time. The cuts are less in the boogie mode than in a complicated lush soul style – and although the record's got plenty of work by dancefloor arrangers like Leonard Caston or Frank Wilson, many of the tracks are in a mellow intimate mode. The biggest exception to this might be the groover "Let Yourself Go" – but the easy side comes through more than enough on tracks like "If", "If You Think", and "Time In A Bottle".
