Charles MingusGreat Concert Of Charles Mingus ... CD
Verve (France), 1964. Used 2 CDs ... $9.99
Charles Mingus recorded many great concerts over the years – but this huge double-length collection may well be one of the most likely to earn the title of "great" – as the lineup is superb, and the music really captures Mingus at a time when he was setting a new fire in his sound! The time is the magical year of 1964 – and Mingus works here with a small group that features Eric Dolphy at a time right before he was to leave our planet all too soon – stretching out with the kind of incredible solos that Mingus allowed players in his group – showing some of the new spirituality that was coming into his sound at the time, emboldened by the leadership of the famous bassist. Dolphy blows flute, alto, and bass clarinet – alongside tremendous work from Clifford Jordan on tenor – springboarding here into the more spiritual currents of his albums to come – next to work from the great Jaki Byard on piano and Dannie Richmond on drums. All titles are very long, filled with majestic solos – and tracks include "Fables Of Faubus", "Parkerana", "Orange Was The Color Of Her Dress Then Blue Silk", "ATFW", "Sophisticated Lady", and "Meditations On Integration". ✨✧ Dexter Gordon with Sonny Grey & George ArvanitasParisian Concert (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Futura (France), 1973. Used ... Out Of Stock
A rare slice of work from Dexter Gordon – an early 70s live date in Paris, recorded by Jef Gilson, and featuring the George Arvanitas trio as a rhythm section, plus trumpet by the great Sonny Grey! The mix of players is totally great, and makes for a record that's fresher than some of Dex' other live European dates of the period – a bit loose and freewheeling, with some of the deeper soul of his early 60s years. Grey's trumpet is an especially nice aspect to the recording – but we also totally dig the bass of Jacky Samson and drums of Charles Saudrais! Arvanitas keeps his piano mostly pointed straight ahead – and titles include "Fried Bananas", "Caloon Bloos", "Dexter Leaps Out", and "No Matter How". CD features 3 bonus tracks too – "Untitled Ballad", "Some Other Blues", and another take of "Fried Bananas". CD

✨✧ Gerry MulliganGerry Mulligan & Concert Jazz Band – Live In Paris 1960 to 1962 (3CD set) ... CD
Fremeaux & Associates (France), Early 60s. New Copy 3CD ... Out Of Stock
Rare work from a very unique chapter in the career of baritone saxophonist Gerry Mulligan – his larger Concert Jazz Band – an ensemble that really helped flesh out some of the ideas he'd explored previously with smaller combos! The group recorded a few albums for Verve in the early 60s, but this 3CD package presents never-heard performances recorded in Paris during the same time – very fitting, given that the "concert" in the group's name was a reference to their ability to improvise amidst structure – of which you'll hear plenty here, with a lineup that includes Zoot Sims on tenor and Bob Brookmeyer on valve trombone. The tracks are very well-recorded, and many are quite long – with titles that include "Blueport", "Utter Chaos", "Spring Is Sprung", "Five Brothers", "Black Nightgown", "Eighteen Carrots For Rabbit", "Out Of This World", "I'm Gonna Go Fishin", "Apple Core", and "Barbara's Theme". Bold, raw live work from Archie Shepp – mostly inside, but played with a heck of a lot of soul and feeling throughout! The set features Archie's quartet with Siegfried Kessler on piano, Cameron Brown on bass and Clifford Jarvis on drums – a really no-nonsense group that's perfect for Shepp's exploration of the straighter side of jazz at this point in his career, but one who's also able to dip back to some sharper, more modern tones as well. Tracks include Shepp's classic "U-Jaama", a nice reading of Cal Massey's "What Would It Be Without You" – and the titles "Baimbu", "Sophisticated Lady", and "Straight Street". CD also features the unissued bonus track "Un Pot D'Eau Trop Chaud" – which runs for almost 20 minutes! CD

SunstrokeNothing's Wrong In Paradise ... LP
Copperhead/Libreville (France), 1985. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99 32.99
A record that really delivers the paradise promised in its title – especially if you dig laidback, keyboard-heavy work with a very mellow vibe! The music is somewhere between some of the best Japanese minimal music of the time, and some of the warmer instrumental experiments from the UK and European scenes – especially that moment in the post-punk years when a few key artists decided that things could be tuneful at the level of some of the best cinematic recordings of the time – but freed from that territory as well, and done at a much more personal, organic level than "serious" music of the concert halls. The duo here work mostly on a range of keyboards, mixed with percussion and cello, all with beautiful results – on titles that include "Boat People", "Dance Of The Prophets", "Re-Incarnation", "Race To The Oasis", and "Nothing's Wrong In Paradise". This package brings together the full performance for the first time ever – not only including material from all four nights that Ray played the festival, but also bonus tracks that feature Charles on piano with other singers too. The tunes are a nice mix of the jazzier style of the last few Atlantic albums, with some of the more familiar R&B of Ray's 50s singles – and titles include "Lil Darlin", "The Story", "Georgia On My Mind", "What'd I Say", "My Bonnie", "One Mint Julep", "Hornful Soul", "Let The Good Times Roll", "Tell The Truth", "I Wonder", and "With You On My Mind". Yves MontandYves Montand Live In Paris 1962 + Bonus 1958 ... CD
Fremeaux & Associates (France), 1958/1962. New Copy ... $14.99 19.99
The charms of Yves Montand come through strongly in the image on the cover – and they definitely come through strongly in the performance on the album – a well-recorded 1962 concert that has Montand's vocals backed with a bit of piano, guitar, and accordion – nicely intimate, but very groovy too! There's a really personal vibe to the performance – with some spoken bits by Yves, rolled in nicely with his vocalizations – on the sort of songs that bristle with wit, and easily made him one of the top singers on the Paris scene during the postwar years! The set mostly features a concert from 1962, with a few bonus tracks from 1958 – and titles include "Le Jazz Et La Java", "Je Vais A Pied", "Les Saltimbanques", "Fumer Le Cigare", "Un Demoiselle Sur Une Balancoire", "Luna Park", "Cherche La Rose", and "Sir Godfrey". The set's worth it for the Past disc alone – as it offers up some never-heard recordings in jazz, Latin, and Brazilian modes – a nicely diverse array of tracks that have that open vibe of a really special live moment at a concert – similar to some of the best Montreux jazz recordings over the years! Fantastic live material from Cannonball Adderley – a set that features material from a time when the alto player was really hitting his early stride, and maybe making even better material in a concert setting than in the studio! The bulk of the set features a 1961 performance at the Olympia in Paris, and there's a few earlier cuts from 1960 – and all tunes feature the great group of Cannonball on alto, Nat Adderley on cornet, Victor Feldman on piano and vibes, Sam Jones on bass, and Louis Haynes on drums – a very classic lineup that comes off perfectly throughout! The tunes are wonderfully long, and stretch out with the imaginative solos that always makes live work by the group so great – on titles that include "Dis Here", "The Chant", "Jeannine", "Autumn Leaves", "Sack O Woe", "Serenity", "Arriving Soon", "Lisa", "In Walked Ray", "Bohemia After Dark", and "New Delhi". ✨✧ Joni MitchellJoni Mitchell – The Asylum Albums 1972 to 1975 (For The Roses/Court & Spark/Hissing Of Summer Lawns/Miles Of Aisles) (4CD set) ... CD
Rhino, Mid 70s. New Copy 4CDs ... Out Of Stock
A key second chapter in the long and wonderful career of Joni Mitchell – a set that brings together the four albums she recorded for the Asylum label in the mid 70s – a post-Blue period that really had Joni opening up and exploring a lot in her music – including a jazzier side of the spectrum that never showed up as strongly before! First up is For The Roses – a sometimes-overlooked album in the career of Joni Mitchell – but a set that's every bit as great as the two huge hits that bracket it! Joni's really finding a great way forward, sounding more mature, and bringing some jazzier currents into her music – thanks in part to help from reedman Tom Scott and bassist Wilton Felder of The Crusaders – and a style of songwriting that's sometimes more fluid than before, and often a lot more biting too! Titles include "Woman Of Heart & Mind", "You Turn Me On I'm A Radio", "For The Roses", "Barbangrill", "Cold Blue Steel & Sweet Fire", "Let The Wind Carry Me", "Lesson In Survival", and "Judgement Of The Moon & Stars". Court & Spark is a key record in the second chapter of Joni Mitchell on record – a set that has both her vocals and her overall music style flowing with all these amazing touches you might not have heard a few years before – jazzier currents in her music that really set the album apart from earlier work in Joni's career! Mitchell responds to the music with soaring vocals that are completely wonderful, and nicely changed up in character from tune to tune – given backing by a host of great jazz and studio players who include Tom Scott on reeds and Joe Sample on keyboards! Titles include her classic version of "Twisted" – a redone version of the old Annie Ross track – plus the classic hit "Help Me", and "Just Like This Train", "Car On A Hill", "Court & Spark", "Down To You", "Free Man In Paris", and "People's Parties". Miles Of Aisles is the first-ever live album from Joni Mitchell – and a record that sounds a fair bit different than a concert set might have during the Reprise years – as Joni's got plenty of help from Tom Scott & The LA Express, who bring a tight yet intimate vibe to the proceedings! Joni's definitely a superstar at this point – as you might guess from the size of the amphitheater on the cover – but she's also got an even stronger ability to come across with a personal, pointed style – one that's very different than the overblown hype of so many other 70s live albums. The set includes a few tracks not yet on albums, and a nice mix of material – including the live version of "Big Yellow Taxi" that ended up as a hit single – and the cuts"You Turn Me On I'm A Radio", "Blue", "Woman Of Heart & Mind", "Both Sides Now", "Real Good For Free", "Jericho", "Circle Game", "Cactus Tree", "The Last Time I Saw Richard", "People's Parties", and "Woodstock". Hissing Of Summer Lawns is a further step forward in the career of Joni Mitchell – a record that not only continues the jazzier currents she explored in the 70s, but also brings in a whole bunch of different modes as well – so much so, it's almost as if Joni's daring anyone to still call her a folk singer with the album! The themes are wonderfully sophisticated, as is the songwriting – the king of material that would keep Mitchell strong for decades, while so many of her contemporaries faltered – as you'll hear on the tracks "In France They Kiss On Main Street", "Sweet Bird", "Shadows & Light", "The Boho Dance", "Don't Interrupt The Sorrow", "The Jungle Line", and "Edith & The Kingpin". Life-changing music from Pierre Henry – one of the key French electronic music composers of the 20th Century – and an artist who went on to have a big impact in the 21st Century as well! This set mixes together key Henry compositions with nine never-released works – all remastered by Henry in his own famous studio – where he took up most of his later-life creative activity, after an initial association with the famous RTF Studio in Paris! The sounds here are incredible – truly an illustration of the genius of the man who once said "it is necessary to destroy music" – a thesis that Pierre expounds on more fully in the notes within. The package features a total of 29 works in all, presented on 12 CDs with a big booklet of notes – and works include "Chroniques Terriennes" (2016), "Etudes Transcendantes Pour Un Piano Imaginaire" (2015), "Grande Toccata" (2006), "Gymkhana" (1970), "Pleins Jeux" (2008), "Kyldex" (1973), "Une Tour De Babel" (1988), "La Reine Verte", "Rock Electronique" (1963), "Histoire Naturelle" (1997), "Facies" (1960), "Le Livre Des Morts Egyptien" (1988), "Fragments Pour Artaud" (1970), "La Noire A Soixante" (1961), "Deuxieme Symphonie" (1972), "Spatiodynamisme" (1953), and "Concerto Des Ambiguites" (1950). The original 2LP set that brought together material that was later issued on the Monk In Italy and Monk In France albums – landmark live sides from a 1961 European tour! The set features the killer 60s Monk quartet with Charlie Rouse, John Ore and Fark Dunlop. 18 tracks in all, including "Epistrophy", "Jackie-ing", "Body & Soul", "Off Minor", "Rhythm-a-ning", "Straight No Chaser", "Bemsha Swing", "Well You Needn't", and "Crepuscle With Nellie". ✨✧ Miles DavisLive Around The World ... CD
Warner, Late 80s. Used ... Out Of Stock
Late live work from Miles Davis – a collection of material recorded in various concert settings during the last few years of the 80s – pulled together as a double-length tribute the trumpeter after he passed away! The quality of the performances here is great – very similar to some of Miles' early 80s work for Columbia, especially his great 2LP live set for them – and the players on the tracks vary a bit, given the setting – and include Adam Holzman, Joey DeFrancesco, and Robert Irving III on keyboards – plus Kenny Garrett on alto and flute, Benny Rietveld and Foley on bass, Ricky Wellman on drums, and Marilyn Mazur on percussion. Titles include "Hannibal", "New Blues", "Intruder", "Time After Time", "Human Nature", "Full Nelson", "Wrinkle", and "Amandla". CD

✨✧ Rene Urtreger & OthersCollection Privee – Extraits & Concerts Inedits ... LP
Carlyne (France), Early 80s. Near Mint- Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
An excellent collection of rare and previously unissued live work featuring French pianist Rene Utreger amidst the company of American and Parisian heavy-hitters, such as Barney Wilen, Sonny Stitt, Kenny Clarke, Miles Davis, Pierre Michelot, Aldo Romano, and Chet Baker. Tracks are long and relaxed – and they rank as some of Urtreger's best work from the later years. There's no dates given, but we suspect that some of the tunes were recorded in the 60s. Titles include "Four", "Sonny's Blues", "Recidive", "Bag's Groove", and "Down". LP, Vinyl record album
