Thiago NassifMente ... CD
Gearbox (UK), 2020. Used ... $8.99
A sharp blend of edgey guitar, offbeat vocals, and lots of other electronic elements – but still served up with plenty of warmth, thanks to the unique approach of Thiago Nassif! Nassif works here with contributions from Vinicius Cantuaria and Arto Lindsay – and in a way, his music is in a similar territory to both of those artists – but as unique as any of their recordings over the years too! Nassif clearly understands the deeper corners of Brazilian music, and has an ear for more experimental modes – but also finds a way to make music with a very personal statement, as he weaves together electric drums with real percussion, guitar loops and keyboards, and even some "Venom synth" of his own. Titles include "Pele De Leopardo", "Voz Unica Foto Sem Calcinha", "Plastico", "Trepa Trepa", "Feral Fox", and "Transparente". CD

✨✧ Ennio MorriconeMorricone Groove – The Kaleidoscope Sound Of Ennio Morricone 1964 to 1977 (180 pressing) ... LP
Beatball/Cine Beat (Korea), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A really beautiful collection of work from Ennio Morricone – one of the greatest soundtrack composers of all time, especially during the period covered in this set! The songs here are from a time when the maestro was effortlessly combining jazz, mod rhythms, rock instrumentation, and other stranger elements – all with a flawless sense of presentation and production that could make even familiar sounds come across in really different ways! The package definitely focuses on the groove promised in the title – but if you know Morricone at all, you'll know that that doesn't mean familiar funk, and instead hits some really mindblowing territory beyond description. Includes work from the films Com Impari Ad Amare Le Donna, Ruba Al Prossimo Tuo, Il Diavolo Nel Cervello, Spasmo, Ad Ogni Costo, Maddaelna, La Dona Invisible, Le Foto Proibite, and other Morricone classics! Dick Farney & Claudette SoaresTudo Isto E Amor ... LP
EMI/Odeon (Brazil), 1976. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $4.99
Mid 70s and mellow work from two legendary Brazilian vocalists – the great Dick Farney and the lovely Claudette Soares, singing here in a set of duets that include a number of classic Brazilian tunes set to lush arrangements. The sound is very classic – kind of a 70s take on an older era, with slight electric touches mixed with more traditional strings and piano – and titles include "Este Seu Olhar", "De Voce Eu Gosto", "Minha Namorada", "O Que E Amar", "Tudo Isto E Amor", "Fotografia", "O Nosso Olhar", and "Castigo". Piero UmilianiSweden – Heaven & Hell (Svezia – Inferno E Paradiso) ... LP
Omicron/Schema (Italy), 1968. New Copy (reissue)... Just Sold Out!
One of the greatest soundtracks ever from the mighty Piero Umiliani – sounds initially written for a film that was an international "sexpose" of daily life in Sweden – but which have grown to even greater fame on their own over the years – thanks to the talent of the maestro! The music here is awash in groovy elements – lots of sweet Hammond organ lines, mod basslines, and some especially cool wordless vocals from the choir of Alessandro Alessandroni – scatting away in a great way alongside the instruments, and bringing an added level of breathy eroticism to the whole thing! This special LP version recreates the original Omicron release of the record – with titles that include the two lyrical tracks "You Tried To Warn Me" and "Sleep Now Little One", sung by Lydia McDonald – plus the tracks "Topless Party", "Eva Svedense", "Essere Donna", "La Signora Cameriera", "FotoModelle", and "Le Ragazze Dell'Archipellago". (Note, does not contain the track "Mah Na Mah Na", which is on other versions of the soundtrack – but it appears on the "partner" reissue of Umiliani's Psichedelica from Schema, under the title "Viva La Sauna Svedese".) ✨✧ Ennio MorriconeL'Alibi – Original Motion Picture Soundtrack ... CD
Dagored (Italy), 1968. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An overlooked Morricone score – one that contains some of his coolest themes! The soundtrack was written for an obscure 1968 thriller starring Vittorio Gassman – and the overall approach has some wonderfully imaginative orchestrations – dark at times, but lightly floating with some really catchy tunes at others! Includes a male vocal version of "Canzone Della Liberta", the classic "Belinda May", and other tracks that include "Pennellate", "Una Fotografia", "Recitazione Corale", "Lo Libero", "Sognando", and "Immagini Del Tempo". This expanded CD features a whopping 27 tracks in all – including some great alternate takes and other unusual versions! CD

✨✧ Ennio MorriconeVeruschka (Right Tempo pressing) ... CD
Right Tempo (Italy), 1971. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the most haunting Morricone soundtracks ever – and one of the grooviest too! The album's a perfect blend of our two favorite styles of Morricone work – that of the floating female vocal over a gentle groove, and the darker, tenser side of his music. The main "Verushka" theme is one of his most beautiful – a variation of female vocals with a gentle edge, in the tradition of classic soundtracks like La Donna Invisible or Le Photo Proibite. This theme shifts from mood to mood over the course of the LP, occasionally giving way to some more atonal passages and other more jazz-based tunes – more of which are included here than on the original release, thanks to an expanded reissue job by Right Tempo! In fact, the whole thing's bubbling over with great music – one of the best Morricone reissues we've ever stocked – done with great sound and a huge array of extra tracks! Titles include a number of takes on the "Verushka" theme, plus "Astratto", "La Bambola", "Le Fotografie", "Magia", "La Spiaggia", and "Dopo L'Intervista". CD

✨✧ Bruno NicolaiLa Dama Rossa Uccide Sette Volte – Original Motion Picture Soundtrack ... CD
Digitmovies (Italy), 1972. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Haunting horror work from the great Bruno Nicolai – an album that's got some wonderfully-crafted themes mixed with some lighter, breezier numbers – almost in a Rosemary's baby sort of mode! Bruno really gets to show off both sides of his talents here – and comes up with some spare and melodic orchestrations that recall his work with Morricone, mixed with other numbers that diverge into sweeter territory and dance along nicely. The set features a total of 22 numbers – nearly all of which are more redemptive than the darker horror plot of the film – and titles include "In Cantina", "Servizio Fotografico", "Minaccia", "Scoperta & Sesto Delitto", "Confronto Finale", "In Automobile", "Ufficio Vuoto", and "Terzo Delitto". ✨✧ Anamaria e MauricioNo No No . . . Estamos Na Nossa ... LP
MCA (Brazil), 1970. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
An incredible album! This one was recorded by the lovely Anamaria – best known to the world as the woman who sang on Marcos Valle's famous "Crickets Sing For Anamaria". She's on her own here, in a fantastic set of jazzy duets with the enigmatic Mauricio. The set is fantastic, with loads of killer material that has a sweet bossa feel and a nice jazzy groove. Titles include a remake of "Freio Aerodinamico", plus "Pelo Teletipo", "Le Le Le", "Ele E Ela", "Fotograma Click", and "Escrito Na Parede Da Varanda". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Gal CostaGal Costa Live At The Blue Note ... CD
DRG, 2006. Used ... Out Of Stock
A slightly traditional set from Brazilian vocalist Gal Costa – but a great one too, and record that demonstrates a new sense of poise and grace in her vocals in recent years! The material here is mostly bossa – work that pre-dates Gal's initial time on record, but which is delivered here with a sensitivity that's wonderful – never too "easy", despite the familiarity of the tunes, and handled with just that right sense of contemplation and expression with which Jobim and others first penned the tunes. Backing is small combo jazz by a quartet with flute, guitar, bass, and drums – and although live, the sound is nicely close up and intimate – really fitting the mood of the songs. Titles include "Fotografia", "Nada Alem", "Corcovado", "Garota De Ipanema", "Wave", "Samba Do Aviao", "A Felicidade", "Triste", and "Ave Maria No Morro". CD

✨✧ Joao DonatoSo Danco Samba ... CD
Lumiar (Brazil), 1999. Used ... Out Of Stock
Very tasty set of jazz tracks by legendary Brazilian pianist Joao Donato, performed as a loving tribute to Jobim, and with the same polished bossa sound as many other titles on the Lumiar label. Donato himself handled most of the arrangements, and the sound is nice and spare, with backing by sax, flute, and trumpet. The titles are all quite familiar, but Donato's playing is quite fresh, and the set is one of his best albums of the past 20 years. Titles include "Fotografia", "Vivo Sonhando", "Caminhos Cruzados", "Outra Vez", and "Wave". CD

✨✧ Leny Andrade & Cristovao BastosLetra & Musica – Antonio Carlos Jobim ... CD
Lumiar (Brazil), 1995. Used ... Out Of Stock
A mellow set of sensitive interpretations of classic Jobim material, sung by the great Brazilian vocalist Leny Andrade, with backing by Cristova Bastos on piano. The set's mostly just voice and piano, and it's one of the mellowest Jobim tributes we've ever heard – sort of as if you were catching a nice after-hours set at a smoky nightclub in Rio (and believe us, if you've heard Leny's voice, that club must be pretty darn smoky!) Titles include "Vivo Sonhando", "Fotografia", "Wave", "Aguas De Marco", "Samba Do Aviao", "Ana Luiza", and "Outra Vez". CD

✨✧ Fabio LibertoriAcqua E Sapone (180 gram pink & white vinyl pressing – with bonus tracks) ... LP
Beat (Italy), 1984. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
An unusual score for an unusual Italian film of the 80s – one that presents outwardly as a bit of a comedy, but which has some darker moments too – all of which come through very nicely in the music by Fabio Libertori! Fabio's definitely in the spirit of the decade with his instrumentation – there's a lot of keyboards and drum machine parts on the record – borrowed from American electro soul, and stripped down a lot more – then balanced with warmer passages that still use electric instrumentation, but with some deeper soundtrack elements. The core theme's almost got some breakdance appeal – the kind of lean cut that was always popular as beats on the street – but the other passages make for a surprisingly complicated soundtrack overall – on titles that include "Tema Di Sandy", "Fuga Di Sandy", "Acqua E Sapone", "Tema Di Enzo", "Primo Servizio Fotografico", and "La Tintoria/Il Vestito". Includes the bonus tracks "La Festa", "Tema Di Sandy (alt)", "C'E", and "La Sfilata Di Sandy (alt)". LP, Vinyl record album
