✨✧ Formula 1Hold On (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Guinness/Big Pink (South Korea), 1977. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A rare batch of funky soul on the notorious Guinness label – the same company that gave the world the two fantastic albums by Newban – and somehow also managed to issue this gem of a set too! The vibe is similar to Newban – well-crafted upbeat soul that isn't really disco, but isn't hard funk either – instead this really unique hybrid of modes that moves along at a mighty nice clip – while tight, fast guitar really carves out most of the groove – but is matched by some great basslines and drums, and topped by horns that really warm things up alongside the vocals! There's a soaring, positive vibe to the whole record – energy that really belies the fact that the set hardly got any circulation at the time – almost as if the group were poising themselves to be huge. Titles include "Love Love Love", "Hold On", "Can You Feel It", "All In Time", "Fine Lady", and "Smoke Up". CD

✨✧ Alessandro AlessandroniFormula 1 Nell'Inferno Del Grand Prix ... LP
Beat (Italy), 1970. Sealed ... Just Sold Out!
One of the grooviest racing soundtracks we've ever heard – a set that's a lot more funky than some of the better-known racetrack film scores that were coming into the racks during the late 60s! The vibe here is almost a bit like some of the sound library material of Alessandro Alessandroni – lots of great melodic elements, wrapped around rhythms that are nice and slinky on the slower moments, and downright funky on the faster ones – mostly instrumental, but with just a bit of vocals at points from I Cantori Moderni – that very cool harmony group that Alessandroni used on many recordings. The instrumentation is never too complex, and the focus feels more small combo than some of the larger orchestrations on Italian scores at the time – served up here in an assortment of 17 tracks from the film! LP, Vinyl record album

TodayNew Formula (with bonus track) ... CD
Motown (Japan), 1990. New Copy ... $8.99 16.99
A really great set from Today – a group with a very old school sense of soul harmony, in a way that elevates the record past some of the thinner mainstream work of the time! The group definitely revel in the beaty, bassy rhythms of the new jack generation – but really come together strongly on the vocal tip, with a range that soars nicely along the scale, and really has the lyrics trading back and forth together in a great way – often really enhancing the hooks of the songs. Titles include a remix of their soundtrack cut "Why You Get Funky On Me" – plus "I Wanna Come Back Home", "Every Little Thing About You", "Let Me Know", "Self Centered", "Gonna Make You Mine", "My Happiness", "No Need To Worry", and "I Got The Feeling". CD features the bonus track "Why You Get Funky On Me (orig mix)". CD

✨✧ Stelvio CiprianiI 2 Della Formula 1 Alla Corsa Piu Pazza – Pazza Del Mondo ... CD
Digitmovies (Italy), 1971. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A 70s racing soundtrack from Stelvio Cipriani – but one that's served up in a much wider mix of modes than the usual Formula 1 or stock car movie! Some numbers feature Cipriani's trademark use of keyboards – in groovy ways that drift over breezy rhythms with a very groovy vibe – even some bossa currents that are a real surprise! A few other tracks have a guitar strutting along in a playful melody – and a few others slow the pace, but still keep things kind of comedic, but with loping energy that you wouldn't expect from the fast-moving world of the racetrack. As you might guess, the bossa-styled tunes are our favorites here – and the CD features 16 tracks in all. CD

✨✧ Fabio FrizziDelitto In Formula Uno ... LP
Beat (Italy), Early 80s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Tomas Milian's the scruffy guy on the cover, and the light style of illustration lets you know that you're not in the spooky territory you might expect from Fabio Frizzi – but instead the kind of quickly-done comedy that was big business on the Italian scene of the 80s! With those films, the music was often the main glue holding the narrative together – and that's definitely the case here, as Frizzi's music is filled with catchy numbers that use electro rhythms and plenty of keyboards – playful and poppy, but with maybe a bit more thought than some of the dialogue on the screen! Back in the day, the original music was only issued as two tracks on a 7" single – but this package marks the full release of other tracks from the film, along with the cuts "Jolly Sax" and "You & I" – the latter with vocals by Tommie Babie! William BellNever Like This Before – The Complete 'Blue' Stax Singles 1961 to 1968 ... CD
Stax/Kent (UK), Mid 60s. New Copy ... $12.99 22.99
William Bell was one of the first great soul singers to record for the legendary Stax Records in Memphis – an artist who really helped set the tone for deep soul singles to come from the likes of Otis Redding and Johnnie Taylor – and one whose early work is still some of the best he ever gave us! This well-done package brings together all of Bell's first 14 singles for the label, both a-sides and b-sides – standing together as a testament to all the greatness the singer brought to the fray right from the start – as Stax not only found a way to record him so much differently than he would have been handled in other spots, but also matured along with Bell to keep on creating fresh magic as the 60s moved on! As always with Ace/Kent, the presentation is wonderful – a detailed set of notes that matches the wonderful set list – which includes "Formula Of Love", "Just As I Thought", "Whatcha Gonna Do", "I Told You So", "Don't Stop Now", "Crying All By Myself", "I'll Show You", "Monkeying Around", "Ain't Got No Girl", "Every Man Oughta Have A Woman", "Never Like This Before", "Marching Off To War", "Soldier's Goodbye", "One Plus One", "Eloise", "You're Such A Sweet Thing", "Don't Make Something Out Of Nothing", and his great farewell to Otis Redding, "Tribute To A King". Peter Brotzmann/Han BenninkSchwarzwaldfahrt (CD/book) ... CD
FMP/Trost (Austria), 1977. New Copy ... $41.99 46.99
An amazing document of one of Peter Brotzmann's greatest albums from the time – a set that includes the album on CD, plus a book of photos taken during its creation! The record features spare duets between him and percussionist Han Bennink – recorded in the Black Forest, in a very nature-oriented setting that often has Bennink playing on rocks, sticks, and whatever else he could find – even some water, which sounds especially amazing! Han turns in some of his most inventive percussion ever – and proof that he's easily one of the most creative musicians on the European scene! There's a real focus on sound and feeling on the album – an organic sensibility that's quite different from other Brotzmann sessions, and which often comes across with a surprisingly gentle feel – and the album's a perfect example of the FMP formula at its best, when applied with the right sense of freedom. The whole thing comes in a softcover book with a fantastic presentation – loads of photos that were taken on the way to the forest where the set was recorded, then during the recording of the material too – really beautiful images that live up to the aesthetic of the cover art. The book also features an introductory essay – and the whole thing is 120 pages, with the CD inside the cover – black and white images throughout. CD

Vee Jay, 1963. Very Good+ ... $16.99
Fantastic work by Chicago Iceman soulster Jerry Butler! Jerry's moving past the harmony formula of his earlier years with The Impressions, into a sophisticated style that would forever change the sound of male vocal soul. Jerry's a wonder with this material – delivering heartfelt tearjerkers in a mature style that had hardly ever been explored in the R&B market, yet still swinging with a good raw quality wherever the nature of the material called for it. Titles include "How Beautifully You Lie", "Such A Feeling", "Isle Of Sirens", "You Can Run But You Can't Hide", "Make It Easy On Yourself", "Message To Martha", "You Can Run (But You Can't Hide)", "Giving Up On Love", and "Whatever You Want". ✨✧ Willie Colon & Hector LavoeVigilante (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Fania/Craft, 1983. New Copy (reissue)... Just Sold Out!
Willie and Hector really open things up here on this excellent early 80s session – going for longer tracks that really expand upon their classic sound of the 70s! There's a very ambitious approach to the music – with more passages that shift between vocals and instrumentation than before, and an overall sound that changes up mood and tone, sometimes a number of times within the same tune. That's not a bad thing, either – as it really gets them past a formula, into whole new territory! The work was originally intended for a soundtrack, but stands quite well on its own – and titles include "Pase La Noche Fumando", "Juanito Alimana", "Vigilante", and "Triste Y Vacia". ✨✧ Lou Donaldson & The 3 SoundsLD + 3 ... LP
Blue Note, 1959. Near Mint- ... $49.99
A classic meeting between alto giant Lou Donaldson and Blue Note's crack Three Sounds combo – the great piano trio led by the mighty Gene Harris! The formula was one that Blue Note employed on a number of sessions from the time – and it makes a lot of sense, because the Three Sounds are a very tight rhythm group, just waiting for a strong soloist to front their rolling soulful grooves – in ways that really set sessions like this apart from their standard albums for the label. On this one, the Sounds give Lou a nice tight backing, and he repays the favor by laying down some very tight, very in-the-pocket solos with a good soul jazz groove. Tracks include "Jump Up", "Confirmation", "Smooth Groove", and "Blue Moon". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Jose FelicianoFeliciano! ... LP
RCA, 1968. Very Good+ ... $9.99
An amazing record! By all rights, this shouldn't be so good – but it's an incredible album of haunting tracks that really has us coming back again and again over the years. The formula is simple: Jose plays late 60s pop tunes on acoustic guitar, and sings them in his spacey soulful voice. Backings are by George Tipton, plus a jazz combo made up of Jim Horn, Ray Brown, and Milt Holland – but it's Jose that really makes the whole thing amazing! His style of presentation is like anything else we can describe – filled with sadness and soul, but enough joy to keep moving forward. He takes tracks like "Light My Fire", "In My Life", "Sunny", and "California Dreamin", and transforms them into an amazing document of the darkness hidden behind the sun of southern California. "California Dreamin" is especially amazing – and Jose's version is one of the best soul songs of all time! LP, Vinyl record album

Pacific Jazz (Japan), 1967. Used ... $26.99
Killer Jazz Crusaders material – exactly the kind of record that really had the group coming into their own in the second half of the 60s – finding a rich new groove that few other combos could match! The record captures the group at a perfect time – a point when they were breaking past the tighter shorter formula of earlier material, and moving into a slightly more spiritual conception – yet one that still had a hard swing and a deeply soulful vibe! The record's a prime example of the never-ending energy held by the band – near-perfect on every track, and played with a sense of creative expression that easily puts them at the top of the soul jazz scene in the late 60s! Titles include "Night Theme", "Air Waves", "Uh Huh", "Watts Happening", and "Ice Water". CD

Jack McDuffDynamic Jack McDuff ... LP
Prestige, 1964. Very Good+ Gatefold ... $14.99
A great groover from Brother Jack! The record is one of a few that Prestige cut matching Jack's hot quartet with the larger arrangements of Benny Golson – and that formula created some real winners that still sound great today! Sure, the formula was initiated by matching Jimmy Smith with Oliver Nelson, but the McDuff/Golson team is infinitely hipper, and they always managed to swing hard hard hard. Plus, Brother Jack's firey organ solos stretch out nice and lean through the arrangement, giving the record a great soulful sound. Titles include "Rail Head", "Bossa Nova West", "Pink Panther", and "Once In A Lifetime". LP, Vinyl record album

Harold Melvin & The Blue NotesBlack & Blue/Wake Up Everybody (SACD multi-channel disc) ... CD
Philadelphia International/Vocalion (UK), Mid 70s. New Copy ... $21.99 24.99
A pair of 70s gems from Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes! Black & Blue is classic Philly soul from Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes – a killer batch of studio tracks, despite the live image of the group on the cover! The album's got a slightly more expansive feel than some of the other Teddy Pendergrass-era albums by The Blue Notes – almost a mini-symphony of soul, and one that takes arrangements from Bobby Martin, Norman Harris, and Vince Montana – and wraps the vocals up in a soaring, righteous sort of feel! The rougher, more personal Teddy Pendergrass style of I Miss You is folded a bit more into the harmonies of the rest of the group here – and the result is a powerful wave of soul that pushes The Blue Notes right to the top of the pack. The album features classics like "The Love I Lost" and "Is There A Place For Me" – plus other nice material like "Concentrate On Me", "It All Depends On You", and "I'm Weak For You". On Wake Up Everybody, Teddy Pendergrass and crew get a bit more political than on earlier releases, and adopt the righteous bubbling soul groove that had put the O'Jays over the top a few years earlier – with incredible results! The title cut – "Wake Up Everybody" – would prove to be a great example of the political Philly International hit formula applied to socially conscious themes, but the record probably scored even bigger with the club crossover hit "Don't Leave Me This Way". Other tracks include "Keep On Lovin You", "Tell The World How I Feel About Cha Baby", "I'm Searching For A Love", and "You Know How To Make Me Feel So Good" – the latter two of which also feature female vocals by Sharon Paige. Bobby Martin, Norman Harris, and Ronnie Baker did the arrangements – and this was Teddy's last LP with the group. CD

Mizell and Byrd had worked together previously on the Black Byrd album – a soaring bit of futuristic jazz funk that took Byrd's career to a whole new level – but this album's the one where they really began to make the formula cook, blending together tight funky rhythms, spacey keyboards, soulful vocals, and some of Donald's best solo work of the 70s! The whole thing's a masterpiece, and all tracks sparkle – including "Lansana's Priestess", "Witch Hunt", and "Street Lady", one of the funkiest tracks ever on Blue Note. A haunting record with a beautiful spacey groove, and one of the best-ever albums on Blue Note! CD
(Hybrid Super Audio CD pressing – also works on standard CD players! Tracks available in stereo and multi-channel!)

Blue Note (Japan), 1959. Used ... Out Of Stock
CD

The excellent second album from Pilot, really perfecting the guitars, keyboards and vocals and hooks formula that shot them into the pop consciousness a year or so earlier – probably their best album ever! The first record had the massive hit "Magic" (aka oh, oh, it's. . .) but this record has a few tunes with hooks that are just as sharp. The opener "You're My No 1" is so catchy, we can hardly believe it's not a throwback pop radio staple, and the record has a few of tracks nearly as grand. The vocals & harmonies are better arranged, and the guitars and keyboards are in that great comfort zone between the glam pop of the previous couple years and the new wave pop to come. Somewhat silly bubble gum lyricism, sure, but it's tasty stuff! Other tracks include "January", "Love Is", "Call Me Round", "To You Alone", "Passion Piece", "Dear Artist" and more! Athens Of The North (UK), 1970s. Near Mint- 2LP ... Out Of Stock
One of the coolest collections of music we've ever heard from the legendary TK Records in Miami – a company that was a powerhouse of 70s hits and disco classics – but which also cut some wonderful underground soul at the time! This sublime set looks at that great lesser-known legacy of TK – the hipper, more sophisticated music they cut in between the chart numbers and boogie singles – often by soul artists who had some involvement with bigger acts, but who really got a chance here to shine on their own! There's a surprising amount of funk in the mix – that deeper current that made Miami a key heir to 60s funky styles from Memphis and New Orleans – and there's some equally great modern soul, but served up with a complexity that goes way past the usual – both in the songwriting and arrangements. If you've only heard TK hit collections, you'll find plenty to love here – and even for deeper diggers like us, there's still plenty of new bits to be discovered! Titles include "Confusion" by Leno Phillips, "You Knock Me Out" by Wildflower, "Hey There Jim" by Jimmy Bo Horne, "Tears Of The World" by Robert Moore, "I Got Bills To Pay" by Johnny K, "I Want To Be Loved" by Stevens & Foster, "Sleep On Dream On" by Raphael Munnings, "Life Is A Beautiful Feeling" by Formula 1, "Bahama Soul Stew" by Funky Nassau, "Lay It On Me" by Willie Johnson, "The Silence That You Keep (version 1)" by Milton Wright, and "There Must Be Something" by Friday Saturday & Sunday. Atmosphere returns wielding their signature sound full force! What they've come out with this round is by far their most experimental – definitely fresher and more distinct than the "safety" of God Loves Ugly. Slug bounces along melodically, tortured and true to his nature, yet he comes off a little (just a little) more optimistic this time and he recites more than just tales of love lost. He STILL is at his tightest when weaving wonderful heart-wrenching stories instead of bragging, yet I don't think you hear the name Lucy once on this album. Sean Daley, the philosopher? – maybe we'll see more and more of that in the future. ANT's production is sounding much much better since God Loves Ugly – these beats pound just a little harder, seemingly influenced by punk rock, seventies rock, and folk rock (any rock). There still is a whole lotta soul in there, which is very nice, yet he still ain't afraid to pitch the formula, say sample some off kilter scatting or a ripping metal guitar. At some level, the music here is maybe more electro pop, of the sort that other European nations were starting to cut in the mid 70s – playful tunes that have lots of keyboards and other electric elements, used in ways that make the catchy Russian lyrics even more groovy than they might sound otherwise! The Nigerian scene might be best-remembered as a hotbed of Afro Funk in the 70s – but during the same key stretch, the nation also gave rise to a heady rock underground, too – one that often mix psychedelic inspirations with some of the soul and funk that were coming from the bigger names on their scene at the time! In other words, there's plenty of guitars here – but also plenty of groove – basslines that really get the tunes going, and a mix of funky drums and rootsy percussion that make the music way more than just standard rock of the time – and even a lot groovier than some of the Zamrock or South African sounds that got a bit more exposure. The package is as great as the sound within – a big book that's filled with detailed notes on the music, the scene, and the tumultuous Nigerian politics of the period – plus lots of photos and images as well! The collection features 18 tracks in all – titles that include "Mother" by Waves, "Never Never Let Me Down" by Formulars Dance Band, "Keep On Moving" by The Hygrades, "Everybody Likes Something Good" by Ify Jerry Krusade, "Onye Ije" by The Strangers, "Stone The Flower" by The Hykers, "Never Too Late" by The Apostles, "Tell Me" by PRO, "Float" by Tirogo, "I Can't Be Satisfied" by Founders 15, and "Ballad Of A Sad Young Woman" by Wrinkar Experience. ✨✧ Anthony Braxton/Milford Graves/William ParkerBeyond Quantum ... CD
Tzadik, 2008. Used ... Out Of Stock
A fantastic outing from these three legends of improvised music – set that's maybe more in the territory of work by Milford Graves and William Parker than it is the usual work of Anthony Braxton – especially for this time in his career! Graves plays drums and percussion, Parker is on bass, and Braxton leaps into the fray wonderfully as the three improvise together – drawing on energy that's much more like his Chicago roots in the AACM than his style of later years – almost as if Braxton's rewriting himself into loft jazz history and shaking loose of the mathematical formulas that often inspire his tunes! Braxton handles a range of saxes, and Graves is especially wonderful in the recorded space of the meeting – as the trio make their way through five improvised selections. CD

✨✧ Anthony BraxtonCreative Orchestra Music (Koln) 1978 ... CD
Hatology (Switzerland), 1978. Used 2CD ... Out Of Stock
One of Anthony Braxton's first great recordings with a larger group – a really impressive array of sounds and tones that takes his compositional experiments to the next level! Tunes here are all those complicated Braxton formulas from the 70s – carried out by a host of equally-imaginative players who include Dwight Andrews, Vinny Golia, JD Parran, Marty Erlich, and Ned Rothenberg on saxes and reeds; Kenny Wheeler, Leo Smith, and Michael Mossman on trumpets; Ray Anderson, George Lewis, and James King Roosa on trombones; Marilyn Crispell on piano, Bobby Naughton on vibes, James Emery on guitar, Bob Ostertag on synthesizer, Thurman Barker on percussion and marimba, and Braxton himself at the head of the ensemble! The electronics come across with some great tones that really link the freer reed moments – and the sound of the whole album is plenty powerful throughout. CD

✨✧ Donald Byrd & Gigi GryceNew Formulas From The Jazz Lab ... LP
RCA (Japan), 1957. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Rare work from the team of Gigi Gryce and Donald Byrd – material recorded during their Jazz Lab sessions for Columbia Records in the 50s, but unissued at the time! The duo are pure genius together – able to open up with all the modern jazz currents that altoist Gryce was bringing to his writing and arranging, yet still swing with all the sense of soul that you'd know from later work from the famous trumpeter Byrd! The blend is great – kind of like all the best 50s modern jazz ideas rolled into one – a record with plenty of new ideas, but a rock-solid swing to match the best on Blue Note or Prestige – driven strongly by the rhythm trio of Hank Jones on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Art Taylor on drums. Gryce is especially nice – maybe a bit more biting than on some of his earlier records with Art Farmer, and a hell of a soloist throughout. Titles include "Exhibit A", "Capri", "Splittin", "Byrd In Hand", "Ergo The Blues", and "Passade". LP, Vinyl record album

Evidence, 1994. Used ... Out Of Stock
A Phil Woods album that's as upbeat and colorful as its cover – one of those great overlooked later recordings by Phil, of the sort that always make digging through his catalog so rewarding! Woods has a great sense of swing here – but one that's never too formulaic or forced – a very organic, spontaneous groove that seems to come strongly from company that includes Brian Lynch on trumpet, Jim McNeely on piano, Steve Gilmore on bass, and Bill Goodwin on drums. Titles include the groovy "CK's Bossa", plus "Peer Pressure", "Song For Sisyphus", "Souvenir", and "Ballad For Hank". CD

Art FarmerWhen Farmer Met Gryce (SHMCD pressing) ... CD
Prestige/Universal (Japan), 1955. New Copy ... $14.99 18.99 About April 24, 2024 (delayed)
One of Art Farmer's pivotal mid 50s sides – recorded in the company of altoist Gigi Gryce, a great player and a budding young arranger who helped Farmer really formulate the best side of his sound! The tracks are lyrically modern – but still have a nice dose of soul in them – a wonderful blend that really sets the stage for the move that Art was making away from earlier trumpeters in jazz – into that hip territory that was neither too cool, nor too overblown – and which would almost be known as "Farmer-like" in years to come! The album features Gryce and Farmer in 2 different groups – one with Horace Silver on piano, Percy Heath on bass, and Kenny Clarke on drums – the other with Freddie Redd on piano, Addison Farmer on bass, and Art Taylor on drums. Titles include "Social Call", "Capri", "Deltitnu", "Stupendous Lee", and "Blue Concept". CD

✨✧ Mr ScruffNinja Tuna (3LP deluxe edition – with bonus download) ... LP
Ninja Tune, 2009. New Copy 3LPs (reissue)... Just Sold Out!
The first proper Mr Scruff full length in more than half a decade – and as you might have gathered from the boisterous breakbeat funk and more soulful undercurrents of recent 12"s – he's broadened his sonic tapestry a bit! Ninja Tuna is the namesake title for his own imprint at his longtime home Ninja Tune – and if he's not out to break the mold on tried and true formulas, he does a fine job of spinning some engrossing soundscapes! Funk, soul, house and bedrock hip hop beats meet masterfully, and a couple of the best tracks are inflected with more accessible groove via some excellent guest vocalists – including Alice Russell and Anreya Tatiani, and Quantic and Pete Simpson drop by, too! Titles include "Test The Sound", "Music Takes Me Up", "Donkey Ride" featuring Quantic, "Hairy Bumpercress", "Whiplash", "Nice Up The Function", "Bang The Floor", "Get On Down", "Hold On" with Andreya Triana, "Give Up To Get", "Kalimba", "This Way" feat Pete Simpson" and "Stockport Carnival". ✨✧ Blue MitchellCup Bearers ... CD
Riverside/OJC, 1962. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the first albums to really show Blue Mitchell's genius as a leader – recorded past the more formulaic bop modes of some of his other Riverside sessions, and handled with a lyrical edge that really gets at the best aspects of his playing. Of course, part of the reason for this is that Blue's in the company of some of his Horace Silver bandmates – including drummer Roy Brooks, tenorist Junior Cook, and bassist Gene Taylor – but even more than that, the presence of a young Cedar Walton on piano really makes the set sparkle, as does the choice of some extremely strong material – such as "The Cup Bearers" and "Capers", both written by that young and glowing jazz compositional lumiary, Tom McIntosh, and the tunes "Turquoise, written by Walton, and "Dingbat Blues", written by Charles Davis. Forgive the long sentence, but the quality of this one's best expressed in a single breath! CD

✨✧ Ohio PlayersHoney ... LP
Mercury, 1975. Very Good Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A legendary album from The Ohio Players – a set that's famous not just for its sexy cover, but for the way the group managed to set a whole new standard for mainstream funk at the time! The group started out in the farther reaches of the Midwest underground, and previously had brought some nice psychedelic elements to their music – which here are more focused and folded into a sound that's wonderfully tight, yet still filled with plenty of imagination – a sense of funk that would be beaten down into a more formulaic mode by groups in years to come, but which here is still wonderfully fresh! Most folks go for their big hit "Love Rollercoaster", but we've always been partial to the smooth, mellow funky track "Sweet Sticky Thing", served up here in the cool long version, which has a groove that builds and builds – a completely sublime journey in sound! The whole album's great, though – and other cuts include "Honey", "Fopp", "Let's Love", "Ain't Givin' Up No Ground" and "Alone". LP, Vinyl record album

Capitol, 1978. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Sweet, smooth, and soulful work from Peabo Bryson – a perfect little record that captures him at a point when he was definitely tightening up his act, but not falling into the soppier traps of later years! Production here is shared by Peabo with the great Johnny Pate – who seems to have a great ear for Bryson's maturing style – managing to couch the vocals in some of the more sophisticated modes formulated on the Chicago scene in previous years, but also with a bit of the west coast modern twist that Capitol was really bringing to the table in the soul business at the time! All tunes are originals by Peabo, and titles include "Crosswinds", "I'm So Into You", "Smile", "She's A Woman", "Love Is Watching You", and "Don't Touch Me". LP, Vinyl record album

Capitol/Soulmusic.com (UK), 1977/1978. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
Peabo Bryson's early efforts for Capitol – Reaching For The Sky and Crosswinds in a 2CD set! Reaching For The Sky is a sublime blend of modern soul that's light years ahead of any of his later work. Part of the credit goes to Richard Evans – who's worked out these wonderfully smooth stepping arrangements that are a perfect accompaniment for Peabo's deep voice, but which also avoid any of the syrupy indulgence of later records. And sure, Peabo's still got that expressive tone – but he's keeping it mean and lean to let the music keep on going strongly. Titles include "Reaching For The Sky", "Hold On To The World", "Love From Your Heart", "Love Walked Out On Me", "You Haven't Learned About Love", and "Feel The Fire". Crosswinds is sweet, smooth, and soulful work from Peabo – a perfect little record that captures him at a point when he was definitely tightening up his act, but not falling into the soppier traps of later years! Prestige/Fresh Sound (Spain), 1954/1955. Used ... Out Of Stock
Seminal modern jazz from Art Farmer & Gigi Gryce – a pair of records the players recorded together on Prestige Records in the mid 50s! First up is When Farmer Met Gryce – one of Art Farmer's pivotal mid 50s sides – recorded in the company of altoist Gigi Gryce, a great player and a budding young arranger who helped Farmer really formulate the best side of his sound! Titles include "Social Call", "Capri", "Deltitnu", "Stupendous Lee", and "Blue Concept". Art Farmer Quintet has Farmer playing in a quintet (natch!), with able accompaniment from Gigi Gryce, a young newcomer at this point, with a post-bop complication to his style that was not to dissimilar from Farmer's. Gryce's mode is perhaps a bit more academic than Farmer's, but Art's lyricism offsets that tendency nicely, and the pair work together in a mode that's every bit as pleasing as Gigi's work with Donald Byrd. The set features some great tracks in sort of an exoticist hardbop mode – and titles include "Satellite", "Shabozz", "Sans Souci", and "Evening In Casablanca". CD

Blue Note, 1958. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Great early work by the Three Sounds, before they'd lapsed a bit too much into their formulaic trio style on Blue Note – and when they were adding some excellent little flourishes to the music to distinguish themselves from the rest of the crowd. Drummer Bill Dowdy's in great shape here, working his way across the kit with the ferocity of a bossa drummer – adding in lots of great fills that bring out the best in Gene Harris sharp piano work. Plus, the album even features a bit of Harris on the celeste – creating a cool vibes-y sound on the track "Blue Bells". Other titles include "O Sole Mio", "Goin Home", "It's Nice", and "Both Sides".
