FieldsFeeling Free – The Complete Recordings (Fields/Contrasts/bonus tracks) ... CD
Esoteric/CBS (UK), 1971. New Copy 2CDs ... $16.99 24.99
The complete recorded legacy of Fields – an overlooked trio from the glory days of the UK prog scene! The set begins with the debut album from Fields – a group named after its keyboardist Graham Field, who first rose to fame in Rare Bird! The approach here is a bit similar – a nice lean take on prog styles – with fantastic work on drums from Andrew McCulloch, and vocals, bass, and guitar from Alan Barry – a singer who's soaring sound really fits the style of the record! There's ties here to McCulloch's later work in King Crimson – but overall, the record's got a tighter style, and never tries to do more than just rely on the strengths of the three musicians – which it does wonderfully well on titles that include "Feeling Free", "A Place To Lay My Head", "Not So Good", "Three Minstrels", "Over & Over Again", and "Friend Of Mine". The set then moves on to their second album Contrasts – recorded with a different singer than Barry, but an equally great sound – oddly not issued by CBS at the time, until Graham Field supervised a CD release many years later! The set's got titles that include "Someone To Trust", "Wedding Bells", "Storm", "The Old Canal", "Music Was Their Game", and "Put Out To Grass". 2CD set comes with bonus tracks – including "Set Yourself Free", "The River", "Spring", "Slow Susan (alt)", "A Place To Lay My Head (alt)", and BBC Radio One versions of "A Friend Of Mine" and "Wouldn't You Agree". Lee Fields & The ExpressionsBig Crown Vaults Vol 1 – Lee Fields & The Expressions (lavender swirl vinyl pressing) ... LP
Big Crown, 2020. New Copy ... $18.99
Never-heard work from Elmer Lee Fields – one of the greatest deep soul singers of the contemporary age – an artist who had to wait decades to get the attention he deserves, and one who's never been in better hands than these! The tracks here are unreleased gems from the sessions for Lee's albums It Rains Love and Special Night – both produced by Leon Michels, of El Michels fame – with backing that echoes some of the amazing funk of that combo, but which also sometimes gives Fields the warmth of a Memphis production from way back in the Hi Records days! The mix of styles is great – and Lee, as always, is one hell of a soul singer – really shining on tracks that include "Two Timer", "Do You know", "Out To Get You", "Don't Give Up", "Time", "Regenerate", and "Thinking About You". The album also features bonus instrumentals by El Michels – non-vocal takes of five tunes from the record! LP, Vinyl record album

Mickey Fields with Richard Groove HolmesAstonishing Mickey Fields ... LP
Edmar, Late 60s. Very Good+ ... $19.99
A really cooking little session from tenorist Mickey Fields – recorded live as one of the legendary Left Bank sessions in Baltimore! Mickey's got some great company on the date – including Groove Holmes on Hammond, plus George Freeman on guitar and Billy Jackson on drums – a lineup that is featured on most of the record, save for two numbers that change to include Calvin Vaughn on organ and Don Bowie on drums. The album features one very long jam session number titled "Left Bank Cook Out" – and long takes on "Straight No Chaser" and "Lover Man – plus cool takes on "Light My Fire" and "Little Green Apples". LP, Vinyl record album
(Deep groove pressing. Cover has some very light wear – but this is a nice copy!)

Richard Dimples FieldsGive Everybody Some ... LP
Boardwalk, 1982. Sealed ... $6.99
Sweet mainstream grooving from Richard Dimples Fields – the 70s indie artist who really struck big with these early 80s albums for Boardwalk! The style here is a mix of mellow soul and more upbeat numbers – very much the kind of blend that Fields' served up best back on his own label in the 70s, but which is re-presented here with a more professional, more contemporary soul vibe. There's a sweetness to Richard's vocals that's quite different than most of his contemporaries – an earnestness that makes even the most poppy numbers sound pretty great – and which almost sound better here than they did in the old days. Titles include "Don't Ever Stop Chasing Your Dreams", "Butter", "People Treat You Funky", "You Shouldn't Have Made It So Good", "You Send Me", and a nice version of "Moody's Mood For Love". ✨✧ Lee Fields & The ExpressionsSpecial Night ... LP
Big Crown, 2016. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A really fantastic album from the legendary Lee Fields – a set that blows us away every bit as much as his stellar My World album! Like that set, this one's got kind of a moody early 70s vibe – almost a New Jersey soul approach at times, but tinged with more southern modes – mixed with bits of Lee's more familiar funk at others – but often with this moody, almost mellow vibe that's such a fresh take on the territory that Fields has been exploring for years! Lee's lost none of the deep soul elements in his vocals, but there's a shift in arranging styles that's really great – and superbly delivered by the Expressions – a subtle darkness that shows why Fields is really one of the true greats out there in the contemporary funk underground – a true soul singer who's never content to just rest on the laurels of previous success. Titles include "Let Him In", "Lover Man", "Make This World", "How I Like It", "Special Night", "I'm Coming Home", and "Where Is The Love". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Richard Dimples FieldsDimples (1981) ... LP
Boardwalk, 1981. Sealed ... Out Of Stock
A surprise hit for Richard Dimples Fields – and one of those albums that seems to turn up in just about every collection of records from the 80s! Although Fields first got his start turning out self-produced soul albums, and you'd expect him to sound a lot slicker here, recording for MCA's Boardwalk imprint, the record's still got a nice down-home feel that almost makes it feel like an indie soul record, despite the fact that Richard is going for a smooth modern sound on most cuts. Our standout favorite is the classic "She's Got Papers On Me", Richard's entry into the Barbara Mason/Shirley Brown song cycle ("you got my man", "he's your man, but he's my lover", etc) – one that takes the view of the man, but which has a sassy female monologue coming in at the end, telling him off! Other tracks include "I Like Your Lovin", "Let Me Take You In My Arms Tonight", "Let The Lady Dance", "In The Still Of the Night", "I've Got To Learn To Say No", and "Don't Ever Take Your Love". Fantastic work from Carlos Nino – and a great return to the kind of highly collaborative projects that made him one of the key spiritual jazz talents to emerge in the 21st Century! The record's a shift from some of the quieter, more contemplative work that Carlos has given us of late – and it blends together his own work on a variety of keyboards and percussion with key contributions from different artists on every track – really basking in the kind of global connections that Carlos has helped foster over the years, very much in the spirit of the International Anthem label too! As with Nino's other work, and the IA roster of artists, there's a feel here that's very much beyond jazz – instrumental improvisation in so many different modes – with work from Jamael Dean on piano and organ, Sam Gendel on vibes and alto, Nate Mercereau on guitar, Dntel on electronics, Adam Rudolph on percussion, Laraaji on zither, Maire Williams on drums, and Shabaka Hutchings on tenor. ✨✧ Terry RileyLast Camel In Paris – Theatre Edouard VII, Paris, 10 November 1978 ... CD
Elision Fields, 1978. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Experimental mastery from Terry Riley – a live recording captured in Paris in 1978 – at a point when he was working in a realm of his own invention, leading up to his benchmark Shri Camel LP! Riley is working here with his Yamaha portable combo organ that he had modified – feeding stereo signals into the digital delay. We'll spare you any more technical jargon, as what's important is the aural atmosphere, and it's a heavy one! There's always a pillow of droning organ tones at the outer edges, chiming bits on the fringes, and Middle East inspired accents at the core, the most linear connection to the coming Shri Camel album. The mood builds from start to finish – and the sound is amazing for a live recording! 10 untitled pieces and it runs pretty close to an hour. CD

Box TopsLetter/Cry Like A Baby/Non Stop/Dimensions (plus bonus tracks) ... CD
Bell/BGO (UK), Late 60s. New Copy 2CD ... $14.99 19.99
Four full albums from the Box Tops, plus bonus tracks too! First up is The Letter/Neon Rainbow – a powerhouse set from The Box Tops – a 60s group who showed the world that the Memphis scene had as much to offer the world of rock as it did the worlds of blues and soul – thanks to the all-great pedigree of this album! Not only does the group feature a very young Alex Chilton on lead vocals, the set was also recorded at the new American Recording Studios headed up by Chips Moman – with tracks on the record from the classic soul songwriting team of Dan Penn and Spooner Oldham, not to mention a few by the young Bobby Womack too! The bit hit "The Letter" leads off the set, but the album's way more than just that it – filled with great tunes that include "I Pray For Rain", "I'm Your Puppet", "Happy Times", "Neon Rainbow", "Break My Mind", "She Knows How", and "Everything I Am". Cry Like A Baby is a fantastic album from The Box Tops – the kind of all-great, no-filler record that really set them apart from some of their 60s contemporaries! At this point, Alex Chilton's still not a songwriter, but he sounds tremendous in the lead on vocals – working with superb Memphis production, amidst a host of great tunes from the team of Dan Penn and Spooner Oldham, plus a few other key songwriters too! Penn produced the record, and really gives it a fantastic sound – the kind of special touches and genre-bending elements of his own later records – on titles that include "Deep In Kentucky", "Cry Like A Baby", "Trouble With Sam", "The Door You Closed To Me", "Lost", "Fields Of Clover", and "Every Time". Non Stop is beautiful work from The Box Tops – a set that has the group moving way past their early hits, and finding this really sort of special place in the world of up-and-coming artists in the 60s! The Box Tops were maybe one of the first Memphis rock groups to really put together all the great elements that were bubbling in that city's scene during the 60s – the unique hybrid of soul, country, R&B, and other influences that were filtering into groups via the cross-cultural vibe of the city. That quality really comes through here – partly in the group's performance and the lead vocals of Alex Chilton, partly in the great production by Dann Penn, who also wrote a number of tracks with Spooner Oldham, and partly in the way that fuller arrangements are used to underscore some more soulful touches in the music. Titles include "Sandman", "Choo Choo Train", "I'm Movin On", "People Gonna Talk", "She Shot A Hole In My Soul", "I Met Her In Church", "I Can Dig It", and "If I Had Let You In". Dimensions is maybe one of the most soulful albums by The Box Tops – and that's saying a heck of a lot, as there's plenty of other soul elements moving through the other records! Alex Chilton's really finding his own here, and contributes a number of his own songs to the record, as a harbinger of his great legacy to come – and the production is slightly shifted, with Tommy Cogbill and Chips Moman taking over from Dan Penn, and maybe bringing in even more elements from the wide crossover between rock and soul on the Memphis scene. Titles include "I See Only Sunshine", "Together", "The Happy Song", "Rock Me Baby", "Sweet Cream Ladies", "I Must Be The Devil", "Midnight Angel", and "Soul Deep". Bonus cuts include "Since I Been Gone", "Lay Your Smile On Me", "King's Highway", "Take Me To Your Heart", "Georgia Farm Boy", "Come On Honey", and "You Keep Tightening Up On Me". CD

One of the best studio albums ever from the legendary Von Freeman – and a date that really captures some of the careful essence of his live performances in Chicago! Unlike the previous Atlantic album, which tried to fit Von into a more expected bag, this easygoing Nessa session really lets him open up and take off – blowing tunes that are straight ahead, but always with that offbeat style that turns the songs inside out – making them rich exploratory fields for inventive and creative solos! The group fits Von's longtime credo of never upstaging the leader – which gives his tenor lots of room to blow – and players include John Young on piano , David Shipp on bass, and the great Wilbur Campbell on drums. Titles include a great version of Mancini's "Mr Lucky", plus "Swinging The Blues", "Polka Dots And Moonbeams", and "Have No Fear Soul Is Here". A nice assortment of odds and ends from the end of Gil's years at Philips – originally put together for the fabulous Ensaio Geral box set, but issued here finally as a separate package! The material is very striking in comparison with Gil's other work of the early 70s – and shows him moving towards a much fuller sound, and a much more joyous place, emotionally. A number of tracks have instrumentation that expands on Gil's earlier hard guitar sound, with additional keyboards, percussion, and lots of studio production. Joao Donato plays some great electric piano on the cut "A Bruxa De Mentira"; Doces Barbaros join Gil on a rocking version of "Chuck Berry Fields Forever"; Nara Leao sings lovely vocals in duet with Gil on "Sarara Miolo"; and Gil fronts the funky Brazil Very Happy Band on the ironic "Brazil Very Happy Band". Forget Tina Turner – we'll take Ike's backup singers, who sound great all the way through this collection! The Ikettes may never have had the fame of Tina, but back in the early and mid 60s, they were actually scoring a few more hits – and these recordings for the Modern label represent the group at their height – stepping firmly into righteous soul territory, shaking off any girl group cliches, and avoiding any of the stereotypes that could sometimes mar Ike Turner's projects. There's a really special sound here – one that's got bits of Motown, bits of R&B, and bits of Northern Soul – all wrapped together perfectly and delivered with sock-solid vocals from singers Robbie Montgomery, Jessie Smith, and Venetta Fields. Heavy sounds from Iron Butterfly – a record that's not nearly as well known as their classic In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida – but which has a very similar vibe all the way through! The songs are a bit shorter, but these guys really manage to do a lot with a little – using lots of brooding bass right up from the bottom, to create a blueprint for hard rock imitators in years to come – none of whom were able to match these guys' simple, direct approach – and their optimistic sense of power in their music. Many numbers often have this vocal interplay that really works wonderful with the fuzzy guitar lines – and titles include "Possession", "Unconscious Power", "So Lo", "Look For The Sun", "Stamped Ideas", "Fields Of The Sun", and a nice fuzzy funk version of "Get Out Of My Life Woman". It's clear that Jay is one of those talents who was rising up during the initial folk revival years, but was also able to find a groove that was very much his own when that moment faded – and the tunes here feature some very unusual phrasing on vocals, supported by acoustic guitar and a bit of percussion – on titles that include "Depression", "Lord Randal", "I Wanna Job", "St James Infirmary", "I'm Georgia Bound", "Bring It With You When You Come", "The Thresher", "Cotton Fields", "Starving To Death On My Government Claim", "Shenandoah", "99 Years In Jail", and "Swing Low Sweet Chariot". Kif/P-Vine (Japan), 2007. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... $48.99 54.99 About February 2, 2023
One of the hippest French albums we've heard in years – a laidback blend of hip hop and jazz that really lives up to the cover's homage to the legendary Black Jazz label! The Jazz Liberatorz have a great way with a groove – a style that's openly flowing and instrumentally jazzy – a bit like the vibe we first came to love in Tribe Called Quest, but almost even better given that much of the instrumentation is played live! Most tracks have warm keyboards rolling along with the beats – and the rhythms are often gently acoustic in nature, with a depth of soul that sets these guys apart from most of their contemporaries. Guests on the record include J Sands, Lizz Fields, Sadat X, Apani B Fly, Fat Lip, and T Love – and titles include "Indonesia", "The Process", "Genius At Work", "I Am Hip Hop", "Ease My Mind", "Clin D'Oeil", "The Return", and "Speak The Language". Greenleaf, 2021. New Copy 2LP ... On November 25, 2022
There's a wonderful combination of horns going on here – the trumpet of Dave Douglas and tenor of Joe Lovano – sounding maybe even better on this album than on their previous efforts together! Both artists have this really cascading sense of sound in this setting – notes that seem to spill out effortlessly from their horns together, finding all the right spaces and spots next to each other – and shaded in with work from Lawrence Fields on piano, Linda May Han Oh on bass, and Joey Baron on drums – a group of equally free-thinking players who match and expand the unusual changes going on in the music. All titles are original – and tracks include "Life On Earth", "Space Exploration", "Shooting Stars", "Midnight March", "Pythagoras", "Sky Miles", "The Flight", and "Antiquity To Outer Space". Takeo MoriyamaEast Plants ... CD
VAP/BBE (UK), 1981. New Copy ... $9.99 14.99
Really amazing sounds from Japanese drummer Takeo Moriyama – a record that's sometimes spiritual and organic, sometimes very unusually put-together – and which makes as much use of inventive percussion as it does the leaders drums! The group's got this very cool twin-sax approach – both tenor and soprano, each played by Toshihiko Inoue and Shuichi Enomoto – alternating between the instruments, and creating these textures that are sometimes sharp-edged, but always very striking – especially when the album's percussion from Yoji Sadanari really takes off! The whole thing almost feels a bit out of time, especially for its early 80s recording date – almost like one of those unusual Japanese spiritual sessions from a decade before, which also might not be what you're expecting from the 80s cover image too. Titles include "To O Ku", "Fields", "Ka Ze", "Ta Ke", and "East Plants". CD

Yet while Quatrain are in the same heady company as that famous group, they also have a style that maybe reflects their scene a bit more – a trippy blend of earlier garage styles and newer psych influences – not yet hard rock, and with a sense of fuzz that really follows from their image on the cover – making everything sound a bit distorted and nicely out of focus. A really cool side of work from the enigmatic Raymond Scott – the legendary midcentury figure who did a wealth of creative work in jazz, soundtrack, and electronic music fields! Turns out, Scott also recorded a heck of a lot of commercials in his studio – all in ways that embrace all the many modes that Raymond did so well – a good number of which also feature lead vocals from his wife Dorothy Collins – a great recording star in her own right! The songs here are all pretty darn short – usually just a minute or less – but the set features a whopping 82 numbers in all, and is a fantastic representation of this lost side of the Raymond Scott legacy – all packaged beautifully with plenty of notes, and sound quality strong enough to move this material way past the demo archive status. Includes ads and jingles for a wide variety of products – from Hamm's Beer, to RCA TV, Gold Medal Flower, Teryton Cigarettes, Krystal Hamburgers, Sprite soda, Revlon Hair Spray, and other big products for the 50s homemaker! Spider have a sound that's warmer and more personal than their name – this cool blend of roots rock with warmer harmonies – almost as if America were recording with more of a down-home vibe. The quartet has one female member, which expands the vocal approach nicely – and they also get help on the backings from lots of hip studio cats – including Rita Jean Bodine, King Errison, Vanetta Fields, Clydie King, and Alan Parker – in arrangements from Dee Barton and Jim Horn. Leon Michels did some of the larger arrangements on the set, and the music has a strong blacksploitation vibe overall – like a stripped-down take on music from the soundtrack to Across 110th Street – which might be part of the reference in the title! Kent (UK), Late 60s. New Copy ... $9.99 18.99
A long-overdue tribute to one of the hippest labels in 60s soul – the short-lived but excellent GWP label, home to a flurry of great indie singles at the end of the decade! GWP was a key precursor to styles that would show up more strongly in later years on east coast indies like All Platinum/Stang and Perception/Today – and the company also employed some great studio talents who would emerge even more strongly on these other labels – like Ed Bland, George Kerr, and Ray Dahrouge, all key figures in soul production at the start of the 70s. The CD does a great job of pulling together the richness of the GWP sound – a mix of uptown soul, sock-soul, sweet soul, and some deeper soul numbers that really round out the sound of the set nicely. 24 tracks in all – including "He's What I Need" by Little Rose Little, "I've Been Down For So Long" by Benny Gordon, "Let's Prove Them Wrong" by Debbie Taylor, "I Don't Know How" by The Persians, "No Defense" by Bobby Penn, "Gotta Find A Way" by The Hesitations, "Heaven's Will" by Alice Clark, "Keep Your Love Warm" by Lilly Fields, "Doin The Gittin Up" by The Devonnes Band, and "I'm Ready" by Milton Bennett. Really great work from the Kent/Modern family of labels on the LA scene of the 60s – a company that initially broke big during the postwar years of R&B, but continued to record a huge amount of wonderful artists as the years went on! Because of their ties to R&B in the previous decade, Kent also had a great ear for the deeper side of soul music – so there's plenty of tracks on this set that may well have come from Memphis, Muscle Shoals, or other points south – mixed in with others that have a cool Cali vibe, including a few great early funk tracks, and some crossover gospel gems! The collection is the sort that Ace does the best – and is filled with rare singles, unreleased tracks, and other gems – all supported by very detailed notes. Key work from an amazing time in British music – a time when the softer sounds of folk music and harder sounds of rock groups stepped aside to allow a unique hybrid to emerge – the sophisticated singer/songwriter, who had an ability to borrow the best from both genres, yet come up with a spirit that was all his own! You'll recognize some of the names here from their work in other fields – but together, the artists represent a very rich document of this unique moment in music – work that's free from commercial pursuits, and which still feels very fresh and new all these many decades later – thanks to a strong ear for songcraft, and a musical vision that's especially surprising from some of the artists who later went on to crossover fame in the mid 70s. The package features 66 tracks in all, with very detailed notes on the well-chosen array of tracks – titles by artists who include Dave Cousins, Gary Farr, Peter Sarstedt, Wizz Jones, Beau, Meic Stevens, Ian A Anderson, Mike Cooper, Mick Audsley, Clifford T Ward, Richard Thompson, Kevin Ayers, David McWilliams, Al Stewart, Marc Brierley, Al Jones, Keith Riley, Bill Fay, Tony Hazzard, Dave Morgan, Phil Cordell, Ray Dorset, Graham Gouldman, Mike Heron, and many others! Savoy/Honest Jons (UK), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $29.99 32.99
An insanely fantastic look at the strong legacy of gospel music from Savoy Records – a company who were initially a powerhouse in the fields of jazz and R&B, but who moved into the gospel world and dominated that market for decades! Savoy is a bit like Chess Records – a company who really learned how to record blues singers and soulful styles from the secular world, then used that same ability to work some real magic on songs from the more spiritual side of the spectrum – an approach that really made for top-shelf music, even as the decades moved on! Savoy's gospel legacy has always been a bit underground – not nearly as reissued for larger audiences as their jazz and blues material – but this collection does a great job of correcting that lack, by presenting their music in a wonderful format – all in a mix of rare cuts and classics from the gospel underground. This first volume focuses on work from the earliest years of Savoy's gospel productions – and features 24 tracks by The Davis Sisters, Gospel Chimes, Jimmy Scott, Roberta Martin Singers, Swindell Brothers, Christones, Gospel Harmonettes Specials, Harmonizing Five, Famous Ward Singers, Blind Boys Of Alabama, Stars Of Faith, Gospel Cavaliers, and even the Staple Singers! A great little entry into a genre that got way too overdone and way too cluttered by the end of the 80s – but which was surprisingly fresh at the time of this initial release! The set pays tribute to the late Thelonious Monk, but does so by moving way past his modern jazz roots – and allowing for participation by a variety of artists in a number of different fields. Hal Willner masterminded the set, and does a great job of making unlike artists work well next to each other – really expanding on famous numbers by Monk, but never getting too goofy overall. Titles include "Functional" by Randy Weston, "Four In One" by Todd Rundgren & Gary Windo, "Thelonious" by Bruce Fowler, "Criss Cross" by Shockabilly, "In Walked Budd" by Terry Adams & Roswell Rudd, "Evidence" by Steve Lacy & Elvin Jones, "Ba-Lu-Bolivar-Ba-Lues-Are" by Was Not Was, "Ask Me Now" by Steve Lacy & Charlie Rouse, "Monk's Mood" by Sharon Freeman, "Round Midnight" by Joe Jackson, and "Friday The Thirteen" by Bobby McFerrin and Bob Dorough. There's plenty of other great Lacy work on the set too – and even if you're put off by the presence of non-jazzers on the set, the album's worth it alone for the Lacy tracks! LP, Vinyl record album

A really unique set of work by Miles Davis – and one that focuses on a really neglected chapter of his career! As you'd guess from the title, the CD brings together an assortment of recordings that Miles made backing up jazz singers – mostly in the early years of his career, at a time when he was still working as a sideman in a variety of settings. The first 4 tracks on the set are from a 1945 date with saxophonist Herbie Fields, on tracks backing singer Rubberlegs Williams – including "That's The Stuff You Gotta Watch", "Pointless Mama Blues", and "Deep Sea Blues". Next up are 4 more tracks with the legendary Billy Eckstine band of 1946 – featuring Miles with Mr B on tunes that include "Oo Bop Sh'bam", "In The Still Of The Night", "Jelly Jelly", and "I Love The Loveliness Of You". These are followed by 4 more from 1946 – featuring Miles in a small combo with Gene Ammons and Art Blakey – backing up singer Earl Coleman on the tracks "Don't Sing Me The Blues" and "Don't Explain To Me Baby", and Ann Baxter on "I've Always Got The Blues" and "Baby Won't You Make Up Your Mind". Last up are 8 tracks from a Sarah Vaughan session from 1950 – featuring classics that include "Mean To Me", "East Of The Sun", "Goodnight My Love", and "It Might As Well Be Spring". 20 tracks in all. Arista, 1976. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the great ones from bassist Miroslav Vitous – a musician you might know from more atmospheric moments, but artist who could really be funky when he wanted! The album's got this righteous groove that really matches the energy of Miroslav's Magical Shepherd album from the same time – his warm, round acoustic bass tones right out front in the mix, but blended with loads of great electric elements too – including lots of wonderful keyboards, and some great reed lines from Jaroslav Jakubovic, a sharp-edged Eastern European player. The great Rimona Francis – of MPS fame – sings a bit on the record, in a cool style that's a bit like Flora Purim or Urzsula Dudziak – but most of the record is instrumental, and some of the cuts get nice and funky. Titles include "Folks", "New Orleans", "Majesty Music", "Streams & Fields", "X Rated", "Best Friends", and "Mount Shasta (part 2)". LP, Vinyl record album

The vintage Mercedes on the cover is a great indication of what you'll find within – a really great array of funky work from the contemporary New York underground – served up by an array of players from groups that include El Michels Affair, Lee Fields & The Expressions, and The Dap-Kings! Leon Michels did some of the larger arrangements on the set, and the music has a strong blacksploitation vibe overall – like a stripped-down take on music from the soundtrack to Across 110th Street – which might be part of the reference in the title! There's a small amount of vocals on the set – from singers who include Terri Walker and Nicole (Lady) Wray – but most of the set is instrumental, and titles include "Moodies Basement", "Motions & Emotions", "Livin In New York City", "EARL's Theme", "Hot Tonight", "Phil's Groove", and "War". Dancefloor soul, disco, boogie and otherwise club ready jams from the early 70s to mid 80s from Chicago and beyond – an excellent batch of rare grooves put together by Mr. Peabody's – a great follow up to excellent Real Sound Of Chicago compilation on BBE! As justly revered as the Chicago scene is for the pioneering club music of the 80s is, the soul and disco of the 70s years and some of boogie and other sounds that ran parallel with the house scene in the 80s too often get overlooked. We love us a soulful history lesson, but what's most important is how great the music is throughout this set – which moves a bit beyond Chicago, too! The CD version features 23 tracks on 2CDs – one disc devoted to Chicago and the other to the Beyond: with "Cancion Ritual" by Hot Pepper, "What You Got Left For Love" by Kenny Wells, "Do What You Can Do" by Spaceark, "Loves Gonna Find You" by Judy Clayton, "Lover" by Lily Fields, "Build (Pts 1 & 2)" by Kurtis Scott, "Space Disco Boogie" by Total Eclipse and "She's Hot" by Sun Sect feat Pam, "Mugged By Love (Instrumental)" by Nate Williams, "I've Got To Break Away (Instrumental)" by Vanatti, "Chega" by Clive Stevens and more. Savoy/Honest Jons (UK), 1970s. New Copy 2LP ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
This second volume features work from Savoy's prime 70s gospel years – 20 tracks by artists who include The Metro Tones, Betty Hollins, Gene Martin, Swan Silvertones, Artistic Sounds, James Moore, Holy Lights Of Baltimore, Brooklyn Skyways, World Wonders, Myrna Summers, Brockingham Ensemble, Prof Charles Taylor, Exciting Supreme Highlights, and Highway QCs. Numero, 1960s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A surprisingly strong collection of country cuts from a very unusual scene – material recorded for the tiny Cuca Records label in Wisconsin – a company who was more likely to open their doors to just about anyone, than they were to carefully pick who got to record in their studio! Yet because of that approach, Cuca was able to capture some fantastic sounds that would have otherwise been lost to more commercial concerns – music that here represents an underground of country singers and late rockabilly acts from the scene in southern Wisconsin – all artists with the kind of twang and subject matter you'd be much more likely to discover down in Tennessee! As usual with Numero Group, the record is as musically great as it is culturally compelling – put together with plenty of care, and a stunning set list that includes "Happy Don't Last Forever" by Nancy Lee Jordan, "Little Hero" by Dixie Drifter, "Cardinal" by John D Curnow, "Six Foot Down" by Gene Ski & The Troubadours, "There's A River" by Sam Podnay, "Hello Houston" by Johnny Madrid, "Wanderer" by The Lavenders, "Challenge" by Larry Phillipson, "Run Little Girl" by Harrison Two, "Heaven Help The Working Girl" by Janet Kaye, "Trouble Sweet Trouble" by Curley Fields & The Kentuckians, and "When I See You" by Rog Winters & The Plainsmen. A fantastic collection of work from The Beach Boys – a set that features two of our favorite albums from the group, plus lots of unreleased rare material! Sure, we love Pet Sounds and Smile – but year after year, we keep on finding new musical magic in the records Sunflower and Surf's Up – both done at a time when the group were grappling with the realities of adult life, changing cultural modes, and their own sense of mortality, both as human beings and pop stars. There's a wonderfully collaborative feel to the music here – all the other group members bringing a lot to the table, not just Brian – and that sensibility is so different than the earlier years of the group, and even different than the Brian-led moments of the mid 60s. If you've not heard these records, you'll be stunned – and if you love them as much as us, you'll love to hear all the bonus material included within! 2LP set features newly remastered versions of the albums Sunflower and Surf's Up – plus bonus tracks that include "Cotton Fields (2020 stereo mix)", "San Miguel (backing vocals excerpt)", "It's About Time (backing vocals excerpt)", "This Whole World (live 1988", "Feel Flows (backing vocals excerpt)", "A Day In The Life Of A Tree (track and backing vocals)", and "Til I Die (acapella)". Saxophonist Kenny Garrett is no stranger to the sounds of his ancestors – as he's got a great legacy of mixing deeper spiritual currents into his music – yet here, that approach is nicely foregrounded in ways we haven't heard from Kenny in quite some time – making for a record that's brimming over with warmth and energy throughout! The set has a core group that features Kenny mostly on alto, with piano from Vernell Brown, bass from Corcoran Holt, drums from Ronald Bruner, and percussion from Rudy Bird – all working in ways that move African influences further into jazz, maybe a bit like some of the best 80s work of the style on a label like Muse Records – with contributions along the way from Lenny White on drums, Johnny Mercier on organ, Maurice Brown on trumpet, and Pedrito Martinez and Dreiser Durruthy on percussion. Dwight Trible turns in a beautiful vocal performance on one cut, and Kenny even vocalizes a bit too – on titles that include "Hargrove", "When The Days Were Different", "Soldiers Of The Fields", "What Was That", "It's Time To Come Home", and "For Art's Sake". ✨✧ Iron ButterflyUnconscious Power – An Anthology 1967 to 1971 (Heavy/In A Gadda Da Vida/Ball/Live/Metamorphosis/Fillmore East/bonus tracks) (7CD set) ... CD
Atco/Eclectic (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 7CD ... Out Of Stock
A monstrous assortment of work from Iron Butterfly – one of the key groups in helping the American scene move from psych to hard rock at the end of the 60s! First up are mono and stereo mixes of Heavy – a record that's not nearly as well known as their classic In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida – but which has a very similar vibe all the way through! Next is the stereo mix of In A Gadda Da Vida – the album that rocked a million dorm rooms back in the 60s – and for good reason, too – given that the title track is a side-long, totally jamming monster – the kind of track that was really revolutionary at the time, and which still has a hell of an impact all these many years later! "In A Gadda Da Vida" was shortened to a single – with the big hook intact – but this classic album version runs for 17 minutes in length, and has the group doing all these cool jams with their instruments – all the animals in the garden of Eden talking to each other (or at least that's what our addled teenaged minds always thought!) Shorter tracks are mighty nice too – a heady, heavy brew of Hammond and fierce guitar from Erik Brann, on cuts all penned by group leader Doug Ingle. Titles include "Termination", "My Mirage", "Flowers & Roses", and "Most Anything You Want". Next is the stereo mix of Ball – a killer classic from Iron Butterfly – a group who always had way more to offer than their hits, as you'll find out when dipping into this full length set! The album's worth it alone for the organ lines – which kind of take off from the territory of The Doors, but are often more unusual – and mixed with vocals that can have an eerie sensibility, but without ever sounding indulgent! The music's not pop psych, but it's also never too full of itself – and titles include "In The Crowds", "In The Time Of Our Lives", "Soul Experience", "Lonely Boy", "Belda Beast", and "Filled With Fear". Next are mono and stereo mixes of Live – great live document of the heady power of Iron Butterfly – with titles that include "You Can't Win", "Are You Happy", "In A Gadda Da Vida", "Filled With Fear", and "In The Time Of Our Lives". Next is Metamorphosis – a record that's not a complete metamorphosis for Iron Butterfly, but one that definitely has the group stretching out with even more force and confidence than before! The group were maybe one of the few to come to hard rock via psych, instead of the blues rock path that so many others took at the time – and that difference is key here, as the songs really resonate with the potential for trippiness, but have this great sense of focus – one that makes the vocals sound even more potent than ever. There's still plenty of great organ work too – and titles include "Free Flight", "Shady Lady", "Best Years Of Our Life", "Slower Than Guns", and "Stone Believer". The set also features the 2CD 1968 Fillmore East set – an unreleased live performance from Iron Butterfly – one that captures the group at their late 60s height, in front of a very heady crowd at The Fillmore East! The recording quality is great – very clear, and different than the group's studio albums – with maybe even a bit more focus on the vocals of Doug Ingle, and the guitar lines of Erik Brann – in a way that lifts them out of the bottom sound a bit more, and presents the group in a whole new sort of focus! Plus, the brief patter from the stage also really helps us get an idea of how a trippy band like this could hold such great sway over a crowd at the time – energy that doesn't seem to stop at all, through the 2CD set's presentation of material from four different shows, on two nights of recording. Titles include "Are You Happy", "Stamped Ideas", "Fields Of Sun", "You Can't Win", "Unconscious Power", "My Mirage", "Her Favorite Style", "Possession", "Iron Butterfly Theme", and the mighty "In A Gadda Da Vida". CD set also features more tracks from singles, new remastering, a poster, and a big booklet of notes! CD

Scott's studio records in recent years have really blown us away – but it's maybe even more amazing here to hear him working with the group in this frenzy of colors, tones, and rhythms! In addition to conventional trumpet, Christian blows a reverse flugelhorn, which has an amazing sound – and his group features really intense work on drums from Cory Fonville, whose efforts on the kit seem to set everyone else on fire – a lineup taht features Lawrence Fields on piano and Rhodes, Kris Funn on bass, Weedie Braimah on percussion, and Elena Pinderhughes on flute. One of the weirdest, wildest albums Caetano Veloso ever recorded – a highly experimental session that shows that his ties with the avant art world were still plenty strong on his return to Brazil! Despite a goofy cheeseball photo of Veloso on the cover in a bikini, the sound on this one is waaaaay out – with weird avant garde vocal bits, choppy instrumentation, and wild shifts in style that make his Tropicalia albums almost seem like pop hits! As usual, Caetano's vocals are superb, especially as he slides from experimental tunes into straighter songs – like the title cut "Araca Azul", and Milton Nascimento's "Cravo E Canela". There's a total of 31 tracks in all – and titles include "Maple Syrup" by The Kresents, "Jam & Jelly" by The Col Lee Jets, "Candy Bar Twist" by The Candymen, "Bubble Gum" by Johnny Redd, "Gum Drop" by Judy Valentine, "Chocolata" by Nat Russell, "Candy Store Blues" by The Casual Three, "Candy Bar Boogie" by The Ames Brothers, "Meet Me At The Candy Store" by The Chesterfields, "Candy Store Love" by The Val Chords, "The Chocolate Song" by Charlie Walker, "Cotton Candy" by Frank Virtuoso Quintette, and "I Hate But I Like Popcorn" by Big Bill Schaeffer. ✨✧ VariousTalk Of The Grapevine Vol 1 – 24 Northern Soul Classics ... CD
Grapevine (UK), 1960s/1970s. Used ... Out Of Stock
Way way way more than the usual Northern Soul compilation – an all-winning batch of rare soul tracks that go a lot deeper than usual – all hand-picked by the expert soul crew at Grapevine Records! The set does swing with the kind of upbeat and uptempo soul tracks that you'd expect from a Northern set – but the vocals are also harder, and the soul runs deeper – making for the kind of collection that could be equally appreciated by fans of southern and deep soul as well! A number of the tracks have a nice rootsy quality that really focuses on the vocals – letting the singers come out full strength, and dominate the set with some wonderfully heartfelt lyrics. Titles include "Think It Over" by The Chesterfields, "Cheatin Kind" by Don Gardner, "Hold Me In Your Arms" by Eddie Holman, "Ever Again" by Bernie Williams, "You're Gonna Miss A Good Thing" by John Bowie, "Seven Day Lover" by James Fountain, "Thank You Baby" by Matt Brown, "Nothing's Too Good For My Baby" by The Springers, and "Hey You Don't Fight It" by The Montclairs. 24 tracks – and a heck of a great deal for this much greatness!
