✨✧ Carmen CavallaroWith That Latin Beat ... LP
Decca, 1959. Very Good+ ... $6.99
The frenzied piano of Carmen Cavallaro gets a nice does of Latin rhythms on this set – and the set's a great example of the way that cocktail piano and Latin were strongly linked in the New York scene of the 50s! Carmen's style here is certainly different than that of Joe Loco, Noro Morales, or others who skirted the same territory – but the difference is also not that great, and it was Cavallaro's earlier sense of drama and color that often helped inspire piano work in players who followed. The rhythms are especially great here too – not straight Latin all the time, but a nice mix of inventive and exotic touches from bass and percussion that really liven things up, and make the tunes come across with modes that are quite different than their familiar readings. Titles include "Dolores My Own", "Frenesi", "Andalucia", "Maria La-O", "Perfida", "Adios", and "Poinciana". LP, Vinyl record album
(Mono pressing. Cover has some light splitting on the spine & top seam.)

Ennio MorriconeOcchio Alla Penna (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Cinevox (Italy), 1981. New Copy ... $21.99 24.99
A Morricone score penned for a comedic western – but music that's really on a par with any of his more familiar classics of the genre! The styles here run from dark to bright – with some numbers that feature trademark Morricone styles like isolated harmonica or chanting vocals, to others that cascade with slightly more contemporary instrumental modes – including just a bit of subdued electricity amidst the larger orchestrations. But in any setting, the Morricone genius shines through beautifully – and there's a sense of depth to even the simplest tunes here that's really great – and the balance here is what really makes the album strong. CD features a whopping 29 tracks in all – way more than any other issue of music from the film – with titles that include "Non Fare L'Indiano", "Sfida All'Ultima Forchetta", "L'Ultima Tromba", "Tanti Pugni", "Occhio Alla Pena", "Passagio Dal Male Al Bene", and "Dal Sarto". Nyofu TysonTurkish Delite Turk Lokumu ... LP
Seismographic (Germany), 1980s. New Copy ... $36.99 39.99
Sweet 80s grooves from the Turkish scene – served up in a mode that mixes earlier styles with instrumentation that's a bit more fitting for the decade – drum machine rhythms and keyboard lines coming into play with more exotic melodies, and vocals served up in a variety of styles! Some of the tunes here are tagged as "disco", but in a way that's really refracted through the span of space and time that led to these recordings – hardly familiar club modes, but still plenty darn groovy – and a nice take on Andaolu modes from a few years before! Titles include "Fiance", "Fidayda", "Emmoglu", "If You Want My Love", "Sunglasses Belly Dance", "Tabancamin Sapini", "Misty Mountain Melodies", and "Eminem". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Phyllis DillonOne Life To Live ... LP
Treasure Isle, Late 60s. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
A fantastic record from one of the first great female voices in Jamaican music – the completely righteous Phyllis Dillon, a singer who set a whole new standard for the genre! The tunes here are beautiful rocksteady numbers – a number of which just have bass, drums, and organ stepping along behind Dillon's powerful lead. A few others change up the rhythms a bit, but Phyllis holds the whole thing together nicely – both on original material, and transformative versions of other tunes from the time. Titles include "Don't Stay Away", "One Life To Live", "Nice Time", "Perfida", "Right Track", "Rocksteady", "Close To You", "Woman Ghetto" and more. LP, Vinyl record album
(Nice vintage Jamaican pressing – green label with deep groove, matrix TILP 228. Back cover has very light staining, but this is a great copy.)

✨✧ Ahmad JamalLegendary Okeh & Epic Recordings (Piano Scene Of Ahmad Jamal/Ahmad Jamal Trio) ... CD
Epic/Legacy, Early/Mid 50s. Used ... Out Of Stock
The long-overdue reissue of some of Ahmad Jamal's first recordings – early sides for the Okeh and Columbia labels, all tunes that would go on to have a huge influence on the use of the piano in jazz! All tracks on the set were recorded in the early 50s with Jamal's great drumless trio that featured Ray Crawford on guitar and either Eddie Calhoun or Israel Crosby on bass – the latter of whom is tremendous here, working as a player who really helped set his instrument free from its traditional role in jazz. The trio's blend of guitar, bass, and piano is completely unique – extremely inventive at both a rhythmic and melodic level, as each instrument often fills both roles equally well – dancing around with an internal groove that emerges outwardly as an especially fluid approach to the tune. If you've never heard Jamal at his early best like this, the CD's gotta be one of the best places we can think of to start – as it features 21 titles in all, all beautifully remastered with impeccable sound that goes far beyond even our original albums! Titles include "Poinciana", "Black Beauty", "Something To Remember You By", "Pavanne", "Perfida", "Rica Pulpa", "Old Devil Moon", "Autumn Leaves", "Ahmad's Blues", and "Aki & Ukthay". CD

✨✧ VariousHabibi Funk – An Eclectic Selection Of Music From The Arab World ... LP
Habibi Funk (Germany), 1970s/1980s. New Copy 2LP ... Out Of Stock
Get ready to have your mind completely blown – because this compilation is one of those completely rare ear-opening experiences that will let you know that there's a hell of a lot of music in the world that you've never heard before – even if, like us, you've heard plenty of funky music over the years! The grooves here definitely live up to the title – as they're completely funky throughout, and in ways that are plenty appealing to fans of Anglo funk, but which have all the Mideast touches you'd expect in the instrumentation – a mad mix of east and west, sacred and secular, with the kind of completely unique vibe that will grab you like the first time you heard Ethiopian soul or Turkish rock! We'd honestly never heard most of this music before – and even though we've dug previous releases on the Habibi Funk label, this namesake set is the moment when they really knock it out of the park, and let us know that they're on to something completely brilliant. Comes with a great set of note, which help the uninitiated like us – and titles include "Casablanca Shuffle" by Belbao, "Wang Dang" by Bob Destiny, "Bsslama Hbibti" by Fadoul, "Sah" by Al Massrieen, "Soul Brother" by Dalton, "Al Asafir" by Kamal Keila, "Rouhi Ya Hafida" by Mallek Mohamed, "La Coladera" by Freh Khodja, "Tape 19.11" by Ahmed Malek, "Ayonha" by Hamid El Shaeri, and "Games" by Samir & Abboud. ✨✧ Doug Hammond/David DurrahReflections In The Sea Of Nurnen ... LP
Tribe, 1975. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
An incredible session from the legendary Tribe Records scene – an equal effort from leader Doug Hammond and keyboardist David Durrah, who contributes some groundbreaking Fender Rhodes and moog work to the set! Hammond handles drums plus a bit of vocals and synthesizer on the session – working alongside Durrah in a groove that mixes electric and acoustic instrumentation into a totally righteous sound with lots of heavy Afro Jazz leanings. A number of tracks feature great vocals from Hammond – righteous, and with a beautifully soulful message-oriented approach – and a few other tracks, such as the classic "Space I" and "Space II", feature a sparer all-electric sound. The whole thing's wonderful – skittishly rhythmic, warmly flowing, and righteously beautiful. Titles include "Sea Of Nurnen", "Fidalgo Detour", "Reflections", "Space II", and "For Real". ✨✧ VariousEarl's Closet – The Lost Archive Of Earl McGrath 1970 to 1980 (clear vinyl pressing) ... LP
Light In The Attic, 1970s. New Copy 2LP ... Out Of Stock
Earl McGrath looks pretty darn cool on the cover, and from all reports he was a pretty darn cool guy in the 70s too – head of Rolling Stones Records, and friend and confidant to some very hip folks in the music industry! After Earl passed, a closet full of unreleased tapes was discovered at his home – really wonderful material by artists big and small, brought together here in a treasure trove of tracks that give us a whole different look at the 70s! Given the obscurity, most titles are demo recordings with lean instrumentation – but that quality makes the work by big stars even more interesting, and really delivers the best work of the special singer/songwriters that McGrath would always champion. Titles include "Cocaine Cowboy" and "Gonna California" by Terry Allen, "California" by Mark Rodney, "Baby Come Closer" and "Dry In The Sun" by Hall & Oates, "Funky But Chic" by David Johansen, "Tension" by Jim Carroll, "Oh La La" by Shadow, "Christopher" by Michael McCarty, "Holy Commotion" by Paul Potash, "Sail Away" by Jabor, "Invisible Lady" by Johnny Angel, "Where Have All The Flowers Gone" by Blood Brothers Six, and "Salt Showers" by Len & Betsy Green. A 12" LP that brings together early 50s tracks from Dave Brubeck's trio – back when the group included a young Cal Tjader on drums and vibes.
