Maria BethaniaAs Cancoes Que Voce Fez Pra Mim ... CD
Universal (Japan), 1993. New Copy ... $13.99
A set of compositions penned by Roberto and Erasmo Carlos – sung by Maria Bethania in a warmly personal setting! The style here gets away from any of the too-romantic qualities that can sometimes mar presentation of the Carlos' brothers work – and instead, Bethania uses her innate sense of power and drama to give these tunes a subtle edge they might not have in the hands of other singers. Backings are sometimes full, but also in a subtle way – using strings slightly to flesh out other instrumentation that's more prominent in the mix. Titles include "Olha", "Detalhes", "Voce Nao Sabe", "Emocoes", "Seu Corpo", "Fera Ferida", "Palavras", and "Costumes". CD

Nicola ConteJet Sounds (full LP) ... LP
Schema/Fez (Italy), 2000. New Copy 2LP ... $28.99 32.99
Wonderful wonderful wonderful – and one of the best albums we've ever heard of modern bossa and soundtrack grooves! For years, Nicola Conte has been a seminal force in the new Italian scene – working as a DJ, promoter, producer, and sometimes recording artist under the odd 12" single. This album marks his first full effort – and after years of bubbling under in the Italian scene, Nicola emerges as one of the most perfect-formed artists we've heard in years. The whole album's a breathtaking mix of 60s bossa, soundtrack, and easy themes – put together with never a dull moment, and always a focus on the kind of mid and uptempo grooves that have been pushing the Italian and German scenes for the last 5 years. The record features great mixes from a few of Nicola's 12" singles, plus a wealth of excellent new material that really expands his groove wonderfully – with a totally real, totally honest sound that pushes past the gazillion retro remix throwaway albums that you'll find stuffing the listening stations at the megastores! Tracks include "Il Cerchio Rosso", "Dossier Omega", "Trappola Mortale", "Jazz Pour Dadine", and "Bossa Per Due". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Joao GilbertoO Mito ... CD
EMI/Rodven (Venezuela), Late 50s/Early 60s/1988. Used ... Just Sold Out!
A treasure – some of the first and best bossa nova work ever recorded! This completely essential set compiles most of Joao Gilberto's early recordings for the EMI/Odeon label in Brazil – remarkably influential tracks recorded from the years 1958 to 1961, featuring a young Joao on guitar and vocals, warmly carving out the bossa nova sound that would go on to influence generations of musicians, and which still remains some of his greatest recorded work ever! 38 tracks in all – with titles that include "Chega De Saudade", "O Pato", "E Luxo So", "Brigas Nunca Mais", "Saudade Fez Um Samba", "Trenzinho", "Este Seu Olhar", "Lobo Bobo", "O Barquinho", "Trevo De 4 Folhas", and "Aos Pes Da Cruz". ✨✧ Dizzy GillespieDizzy In Greece ... LP
Verve, 1956. Very Good+ ... $34.99
Dizzy's in Greece, looking very cool in a fez on the cover – and really wailing hard with a larger group that includes Billy Mitchell, Charlie Persip, Lee Morgan, Wynton Kelly, and Phil Woods! The mode here is still quite boppish, despite the larger size of the ensemble – but Dizzy also manages to bring in some of those wonderfully rich colors that were coming into his later work – a tonal depth that's completely amazing, and which pushed Gillespie way past his simple roots of the 40s, into a space that made him one of the most expressive jazz leaders of the 50s. The horn charts alone are totally great – and Dizzy's got a wonderful talent for letting the key soloists step out with a really strong voice in the set – and although short, the tunes have an incredible reach overall. Titles include "Tin Tin Deo", "Yesterdays", "Groovin' High", "Hey Pete", "Arnnie's Dance", and "Groovin' for Nat". LP, Vinyl record album
(Verve Records Inc pressing with trumpeter logo and deep groove. Cover has a small bit of seam splitting and tape, but vinyl is great.)

Nara LeaoCoisas Do Mundo ... CD
Philips/Universal (Japan), 1969. New Copy ... $13.99
Quite a different album than Nara Leao's other record from 1969 – the one produced by Rogerio Duprat! This one's much sparer and rootsier – almost in a samba mode at times – but even more so in a slightly folksy style that puts Nara's vocals highly upfront in the mix, supported by just a bit of percussion and guitar – in a way that's darker and without the sweetness of her earlier albums, and which has some of the careful presentation and sly interplay that made Leao a surprising force in the Tropicalia generation. Arrangements are by Sidney Miller, with all the depth of his own 60s work – and titles include "La Columbe", "Apanhei-Te Cavaquinho", "Poema Da Rosa", "Little Boxes", "Azulao", "Tambores Da Paz", "Parabien De La Paloma", "Fez Bobagem", and a great version of Caetano Veloso's "Atras Do Trio Eletrico". ✨✧ Gracinha LeporaceGracinha ... CD
Philips/Universal (Japan), 1968. New Copy ... $13.99
Great early work from singer Gracinha Leporace – a vocalist you might know from her later work in Bossa Rio, or her recordings with husband Sergio Mendes! Even at the start, Gracinha's a hell of a singer – a vocalist who's capable of all the coolness of the bossa era, yet still richly expressive in all the right ways – with a jazzy flourish at times that's perfect for the album's lively backings from Oscar Castro Neves! Instrumentation includes some sweet organ lines with a Walter Wanderley sort of groove – plus other moments that use woodwinds in this really lovely way – almost echoing some of the early Deodato charts. The whole thing's wonderful – a real lost bossa treasure – and titles include "Prece", "Cancao Da Desesperanca", "Ultima Batucada", "Rancho De Ano Novo", "A Saudade Fez Um Samba", "Sem Saida", "Cantiga", and "Em Tempo". ✨✧ Edu Lobo & Maria BethaniaEdu & Bethania ... CD
Elenco/Universal (Japan), 1967. New Copy ... $13.99
A pivotal album in the careers of Edu Lobo and Maria Bethania – united in a series of unique duets for this classic Elenco session from 1966! The album pre-dates most of Bethania's other work, and is done in a style that's got all the best touches of Lobo's baroque post-bossa arranging style – but with an overall sound that's a bit more stripped-down and rootsy. Edu and Maria duet on about half the tracks, trading vocals back and forth over some incredibly beautiful arrangements – and the remaining tracks feature each artist singing solo. The whole thing's amazing, and titles include great versions of "Upa Neguinho", "Lua Nova", "Candeias", "Veleiro", "So Me Fez Bem", "O Tempo E O Rio", and "Boranda". CD

✨✧ Joao GilbertoChega De Saudade (plus bonus tracks) ... CD
Odeon/El (UK), Late 50s. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Pure bossa magic – and a wonderful illustration of why the early music of Joao Gilberto was so tremendous! (Actually, all of his music is tremendous, but that seems to be especially the case here!) The tracks are all fantastic – breezy, breathy, and almost effortlessly sung throughout – songs that drift in air almost of their own accord, yet also manage a gently rhythmic groove that's probably the best definition of the style of bossa that you could ever hope to find! Most numbers feature acoustic guitar upfront in the mix alongside the vocals, plus a bit of light percussion – and even when there's fuller orchestrations on the record, they're used spaciously and gently – often with some nice jazzy inflections. Titles include "Briga Nunca Mais", "Ho Ba La La", "Rosa Morena", "Bim Bom", "Lobo Bobo", "E Luxo So", "Aos Pes Da Cruz", "Saudade Fez Um Samba", and "Desafinado". This CD edition includes 3 bonus tracks, from Cantando As Musicas Do Film Orfeo De Carnaval – "A Felicidade", "Manha De Carnival" and "O Nosso Amor". CD

✨✧ VariousRust Side Story Vol 24 (red white & green vinyl pressing) ... LP
Numero, Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A treasure trove of rare Ohio soul – served up by the folks at Numero, and with a cover that takes us back to a series of dodgy collections from the LA scene! Like the vintage East Side Story sets, the focus here is on mellow soul tracks that are perfect for late night, laidback listening – heavy on the kind of harmonies that we love in east coast sweet soul from the 60s – group soul evolving way past its roots, with just the right sort of subtle use of instrumentation to push the gently-tripping vocals forward! If you love sweet soul or harmony soul, you'll find plenty to love here – on a set list of rarities that includes "Oh Love" by Iron Knowledge, "Sheer Magic" by Ice Cold Love, "This Is The Way I Am" by La'Fez, "Oh Yes I Do" by Foreign Blue Renassance, "Lovin You Is Easy" by Now, "Gloria" by Young Mods, "Just Ask Me" by Soul Superbs, and "I'm Gonna Treat You Good" by The Donations. ✨✧ VariousExtra Added Soul – Crossover, Modern, & Funky Soul ... CD
Numero/J&D, 1970s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A set that definitely lives up to its title – as it's kind of an extra dose of soulful tracks from the vaults of the many reissue projects handled by the Numero Group over the years! The collection brings together upbeat soul groovers, warm modern soul gems, and a few funkier cuts – in a mix that really rewrites any understanding that you might have of uptempo soul in the 70s – underground grooves that are quite far from the slicker disco of the charts, and which together make for a set that could easily pack the dancefloor! Titles include "Deep In Your Heart" by Young Divines, "I Love You" by Karriem, "Main Squeeze" by Nate Evans, "Love Explosion" by Donnell Pittman, "Love Is On The Way" by Bill Spoon, "Try My Love Again" by Syl Johnson, "Lift This Hurt" by Elvin Spencer, "We're Two Fools In Love" by Dyson's Faces, "No Matter" by La'Fez, "Guilty" by Jackie Stoudemire, "I Think It's Time" by Alice Swoboda, "I'll Never Say No" by The Summits, "Cosmos Third Eye" by Cosmos Universal Band, and "Standing By Love" by Eula Cooper. ✨✧ Thollem/Hafez ModirzadehThollem's Astral Traveling Sessions With Hafez Modirzadeh ... CD
Astral Spirits, 2021. New Copy ... $8.99 14.00
A set that's billed as "a sonic Palette of eight re-tuned pitches for piano and saxophone" – and which comes across as a series of beautiful duets between Thollem on piano, and Hafez Modirzadeh on alto and tenor sax! The work often feels more compositional than improvisational – but there's clearly a lot of improvisation going on too – maybe just given a focus based on the tonal directions of each of the album's different tracks, which, together, make listening to the record almost like moving through different colors on a palette! The album moves into more improvised material near the end – and titles include "Facet 28", "Facet 27", "Facet 39/40", "Duo Improvisation I", "Solo Improvisation IV", and "Facet 26". CD

Chris McGregor's Brotherhood Of BreathTravelling Somewhere ... CD
Cuneiform, 1973. Used ... $14.99
One of the few recordings available from the classic period of Chris McGregor's famous Brotherhood Of Breath ensemble – the African-tinged jazz combo that grew out of the wreckage of the ex-patriation of South Africa's Blue Notes ensemble as it mixed with members of the London scene in the late 60s. The resultant group was one of the most compelling cross cultural moments in jazz history – a mix of players that included Dudu Pukwana, Mongezi Feza, Nick Evans, Harry Beckett, Harry Miller, Evan Parker, and Louis Moholo. This live set was recorded in Bremen, Germany in 1973 – and it easily ranks with the best of the group's studio work, and (dare way say it?) may be their most perfect realization of the idiom they always promise, yet sometimes didn't deliver. Titles include "Wood Fire", "The Bridge", "MRA", "Restless", and "Kongi's Theme". CD

Jackie McLean & Michael Carvin/Chris McGregor's Brotherhood Of BreathDe I Comahlee/MRA ... 12-inch
Melodies International, Early 70s. New Copy (pic cover)... $16.99 18.99
A 12" single, but one that's more like an EP – given that it features two long tracks, both pulled from the more spiritual side of the 70s jazz spectrum! Side one features "De I Comahlee" – a wonderful collaboration between saxophonist Jackie McLean and drummer Michael Carvin – a cut that's very heavy on percussion and chanted vocals from both musicians, which then gives way to a searing alto solo from Jackie – served up in the extended version that runs well over 12 minutes in length! Side two features the cut "MRA" by the legendary Brotherhood Of Breath group – led by South African pianist Chris McGregor, and featuring work from Mongezi Feza on pocket trumpet, Dudu Pukwana on alto, Alan Skidmore on tenor, John Surman on soprano, Harry Miller on bass, and Louis Moholo on drums – all working with McGregor in a very modal groove! 12-inch, Vinyl record
(Comes with a bonus poster and notes!)

✨✧ Blue NotesOgun Collection (5 CD set) ... CD
Ogun (UK), 1964/1970s/1980s. Used 5CDs ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A long-overdue look at one of the most important groups to grace the British jazz scene of the 60s and 70s – the legendary Blue Notes, a group of South African expatriates with an undeniably huge influence on the music of their new homeland! The ensemble featured key players who went onto do some amazing work on their own, but first came together in this group – trumpeter Mongezi Feza, saxophonist Dudu Pukwana, pianist Chris McGregor, bassist Johnny Dyani, and drummer Louis Moholo – all players as dynamic together and important on their own as the members of the Art Emsemble of Chicago from the US. The set finally brings out all of the group's key albums for the Ogun label, plus some great bonus material too – a rich tapestry of work that shows the combo's evolution from African-tinged jazz of the 60s to some much more farther-reaching sounds in the 70s – all beautifully packaged, with each album presented on its own inside a larger slipcase! The set features The Blue Notes Legacy, a live date in South Africa from 1964; Blue Notes For Mongezi, a double-length set recorded after the passing of group trumpeter Mongezi Feza; Blue Notes For Johnny, a date recorded after the passing of bassist Johnny Dyani; and Blue Notes In Concert, a great live date recorded in 1977. There's a wealth of wonderful music here – and along with the bonus tracks, the set also features a great booklet of remembrances and vintage photos! CD

Gramophone Company Of India (UK), 1985. New Copy (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The image on the cover will let you know that you're in for something very different right away – as Brij Bhushan Kabra not only plays the guitar in a way that's different than others, he also strings the instrument in very different ways too! The set's a bit different than some of Kabra's earlier records, in that the songs are a bit shorter – but they follow a very similar style, in mixing his evocative lines on guitar with tabla from Feza Quarishi, plus some occasional other sounds that we can't figure out at all – only listed on the cover as "arranged by" YS Moolky, but with these very spare elements that make us feel like something else is going on behind the guitar and tablas. Titles include "Bayeria", "Pinihari", "Charkho", "Bidaai", "Holi", and "Badila Bega Aaijo". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Dudu PukwanaDiamond Express (with bonus tracks) (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Freedom/Muzak (Japan), 1975. New Copy 2CD Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of a rare few albums cut as a leader by reedman Dudu Pukwana – maybe best known for his role in the South African jazz group The Blue Notes, and an undeniable force on the London scene in the late 60s and early 70s! This special set is a great merging of both worlds – as Pukwana works here with older partners Mongezi Feza on trumpet and Louis Moholo on drums – but also gets help at times from other players of the London underground – Elton Dean on saxello, Nick Evans on trombone, and Keith Tippett on piano! But perhaps the two key players here are Lucky Ranko on guitar and Ernest Mothole on electric bass – both of whom provide a pulsing rhythm that brings more of a South African sense of groove to the music than some of Dudu's other more freely-improvised material with his famous group. Frank Roberts warms things up with some great work on keyboards too – and there's a definite South Africa via London vibe going on here – on titles that include "Madodana", "Diamond Express", "Tete & Barbs In My Mind", and "Ubaqile". PLUS, this 2CD version features a whole unreleased album recorded around the same time – a date that features more tracks from the group with Moholo, Fezi, Evans, Dean, and Tippett – on titles that include "Hidden Spirits", "Black Horse", "Blue Nick", "Blessing Light", and "Ducking Darkness". ✨✧ Dudu Pukwana & The SpearsDudu Pukwana & The Spears (180 gram pressing – with bonus tracks) ... LP
Quality/Matsuli (UK), 1969. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Amazing work from South African jazz legend Dudu Pukwana – a rare album from 1969, plus a never-issued set of tracks done for Atlantic Records at the same time! The core album, titled Dudu Pukwana & The Spears, features Dudu on alto, in the company of a lot of familiar players from his roots – Chris McGregor on piano, Mongezi Feza on trumpet, Louis Moholo on drums, Harry Miller on bass, and Jonas Gwangwa on trombone – plus great organ from Bob Stucky, who'd recorded with Pukwana a bit on the London scene of the 60s – and wholes presence really brings in a nice soul jazz vibe! The style is much straighter than the more avant 70s material of all players involved – and definitely has some of that upbeat South African sense of rhythm going on – nicely rollicking, and starting somewhere in the territory of a Hugh Masekela record, then moving into more of a Prestige 60s vibe. Titles include "Kwa Thula", "Joe's Jika", "Pho La", "Yima Mjalo", "Pezulu", "Thulula", and "Half Moon". The second batch of material is presented as an Atlantic Records acetate reproduction – a session produced by Joe Boyd, with more work from McGregor, Miller, Feza, and Moholo – plus the very unusual presence of Richard Thompson on guitar! Bob Stuckey plays organ again on a few numbers, and things are much more complex – stretching out on tunes that include "Pezulu", "Izulu Liyaduduma", "Church Mouse", "Sibuyile", and an "Untitled" number.
