A blast from The Fireballs – pulp guitar instrumentals culled from the group's work at Norman Petty's legendary Clovis Studios – unreleased numbers from The Fireballs, rare cuts credited to Guitars Inc and lead guitarist George Tomsco, plus the entire Wide World Hits LP credited to The String-A-Longs! First up is a diverse set of guitar instrumentals from The Fireballs, from surf styled wavemakers to twangier gems and straight up groovers, many almost completely unheard before. Titles include "Torquette", "Poquito", "Stormy", "Mexican Firefly", "Love Child" and more. Also includes early 60s cuts "Little Toy" and "Holiday Love" by Guitars Inc, "Lonely Fire" by George Tomsco and the late 60s exotica release on Atco, Wide World Hits – buyers probably had no idea this was an instrumentals album recorded by the pseudonymous The Fireballs! Includes the tunes "Black Grass", "More", "Silence Is Golden", "Love Is Blue", "Places I Remember", "I'll Be There", "Groovin", and "Someone Stronger". CD

One of the more masterful albums that Prado cut for RCA, and a thrilling set of tracks with a very haunting feel. The entirety of side one features the extended "Exotic Suite Of The Americas", which has a storming Latin sound, mixed with nice exotica touches. The flipside features shorter tracks, but also done in a manner that has a wide dynamic range, with some startling arrangements. Titles include "Son Of A Gun", "Mama Yo Quiero", and "El Relicario". A classic early set featuring the Jazz Messengers back when the group was less of an Art Blakey project, and more of an all-around affair – as you might guess from a lineup that also includes Horace Silver on piano, Kenny Dorham on trumpet, Hank Mobley on tenor, and Doug Watkins on bass! The live set is one of the earliest and purest versions of Blakey's hardbop vision, touched with the slightly exotic lyricism of Silver, which gives the tracks a wonderful edge. The playing is excellent throughout – and the album's the kind of live stormer that shows why the group were such a huge draw right out of the box, and why they performed as well (if not better) in a live setting than they did in a studio one! Tracks include "Minor's Holiday", "The Theme", "Prince Albert", and "Deciphering The Message" – and the CD features 3 bonus tracks, all long, plus great remastering! CD

A fantastic album from Sun Ra and the Arkestra – one that we'd rank right up there with our favorites on the Saturn Records label! The work here has never been issued, and it's extremely beautiful, too – pulled from a few just-discovered studio sessions done after the group was parting ways with Impulse Records, and mostly recording in a live environment! There's an intimacy to these studio tracks that's a nice difference from some of the more freewheeling live work of the period – moments that almost hearken back to the exotic jazz of the earliest Saturn years of the group, mixed with some other currents that seem to point the way towards the excellent Horo Records material to come – especially in the way Ra is phrasing things on his piano. Most groups are relatively small, and titles include the lovely "Island In The Sun" with Marshall Allen on some great flute; a studio take on "Unmask The Batman", better known from live sets, and a playful tune that hints at the group's work on the Dan & Dale Batman album in the 60s; a spiritual stormer "I'll Wait For You", with great piano from Ra and an excellent tenor solo from John Gilmore; and a take on "New Dawn" with work by Marshall Allen on alto, Elo Umoe on bass clarinet, and Danny Ray Thompson on baritone. A nice little record by Gabor – one that reproduces the kind of groove he was hitting on his classic Impulse albums, a mix of tripped-out modal jazz with exotic influences, and more than a bit of soul. Gabor's reunited here with his old bandmate Charles Lloyd from Chico Hamilton years – and Charles plays flute on a remake of "Sombrero Sam", one of Szabo's nicest tunes. Anthony Ortega plays flute on a version of "Stormy", and another long track features nice keyboards by Tommy Eyre. Also includes a remake of "Spellbinder", a great little tune! One of Gabor Szabo's amazing late 60s albums for the Skye label – trippy, jazzy, and with a mod exotica vibe that would never be matched again! Gabor's playing guitar in a two-guitar frontline, which makes for lots of dreamy interplay between the strings – a shifting pattern of sound that's even more exotic than some of Szabo's earlier work on Impulse, thanks to added help from guitarist Francois Vaz. The rest of the group is great too – and features mighty Mike Melvoin on organ, plus fender bass, cello, and percussion – all produced by Gary McFarland with a wonderfully evocative feel! Titles include "Dear Prudence", "Stormy", "Walk Away Renee", "Michael From Mountains", "I've Just Seen A Face", and "You Won't See Me". LP, Vinyl record album

A great array of bug-related tunes from the glory days of the 45rpm single – mostly rock numbers, but with some cool instrumental, soul, and exotica tracks thrown into the mix as well! Playful Italian disco from the 70s – done with a few cheesy touches, including the "harem" cover on the record – but also featuring some nice longer tracks that have better instrumental passages! There's a nice exotic feel on "Sandstorm", complete with Eastern-styled strings – and a few cuts also feature some nice moogy bits too. Our favorite is the kitschy "Song For Smokey & The Bandit" – and other tracks include "One For You One For Me", "Hey Woman", and "There For Me". LP, Vinyl record album
