A mighty impressive box set of previously unreleased Can – incredible stuff captured throughout their groundbreaking run from the late 60s to mid 70s – culled from hours and hours of tapes of the sessions that could have just as easily wound up on any of their classic records of the period! We figured that this would almost certainly be a solid companion piece to their initial run of classic albums – but the best thing about it is that out stands up really well on its own. Can pretty famously let the tapes run while they worked things out and let the magic happen spontaneously, so it stands to reason a lot of brilliant stuff was left on those tapes! We're surprised it took so long to pour through it and assemble some of the best of the "lost" material, but better late than never! Since it covers the full late 60s & early 70s periods, it's got bits with Mooney and Suzuki, hypnotic live takes, slow-building tension, moody lulls and violent bursts of sound – it's Can, alright! 30 tracks sequenced brilliantly over 3CDs – and it comes a reel-to-reel style box with a 10-inch booklet. A record that was years ahead of its time – in part because Karen Dalton's a singer with a style that's wonderfully hard to peg! The set was issued on Capitol Records at a time when the label was doing great work with Fred Neil – but Dalton's got this blues-inflected style of singing and a kind of inflection that also maybe echoes Billie Holiday a bit – yet all at a level that's very laidback and easygoing, so that Karen never sounds like some of her contemporaries who were trying a bit to hard to reach for the more soulful side of the spectrum! Instrumentation is mostly acoustic, gut there's some great use of electric bass and a bit of electric guitar – which makes Dalton's 12 string and banjo performances come across more like some of the hipper acoustic sessions on Vanguard at the time. Tunes include a few originals two Fred Neil covers, and a well-chosen Tim Hardin track too – in a set list that includes "In The Evening It's So Hard To Tell Who's Going To Love You The Best", "Little Bit Of Rain", "Blues On The Ceiling", "Sweet Substitute", "Ribbon Bow", "I Love You More Thank Words Can Say", and "Down On The Street". Rare French material by Zoot Sims – recorded in Paris in 1956, and with a more stretched-out feel than some of his other Parisian sides of the 50s! The group's a hip quintet with Henri Renaud on piano, Jon Eardley on trumpet, and Charles Saudrais on drums – and the set swings with an open groove that gives Zoot and Eardley plenty of solo space. Originally issued on the Ducret Thompson album, and a lot harder to find than most of Zoot's other work from the time – with titles that include "Captain Jetter", "Nuzzolese Blues", "Evening In Paris", "On The Alamo", and "Little Jon Special". One of the best Larry Young albums for Blue Note – and a record that really gets at his unique conception and style in the 60s! The session's a key bridge between Larry's soul jazz roots and his more far-reaching experimental work – filled with deep, heavy grooves – yet mixed with playful, personal touches on the Hammond – some of the most unique sounds coming from Blue Note at the time! The group features a nicely different lineup from the usual label Hammond date – Tyrone Washington and Herbert Morgan on tenor, and Hank White on flugelhorn – and the ensemble is augmented by some congas, and vocals by Larry's wife Althea on one track. The sound is great – more inside than Love & Peace, but with a similar righteous energy – and titles include "Evening", "Majestic Soul", "Tender Feelings", "Wild Is The Wind" and "Means Happiness". An amazing set – the complete early Oscar Peterson recordings for Norman Granz – packaged in a format that's as lovely as the music itself! The work here is the stuff of legend – the tracks that first pushed Peterson into the limelight of American music, and which opened up a whole new side of jazz improvisation! Although Oscar's made many great records over the years, we're really partial to these initial tracks – as they offer up the Peterson genius at its purest, most basic – often presented with only bass for accompaniment, played by Ray Brown or Major Holley – so that you get plenty of space to hear Oscar open up on the keys! The 3CDs come wrapped inside a hardcover book, which itself is in a beautiful slipcover – filled with full notes on the music, and color reproductions of the album covers that originally contained the music – Oscar Peterson At Carnegie Hall, Tenderly, Keyboard, and An Evening With Oscar Peterson – not to mention a wealth of smaller 7" and 10" releases that are also featured here. An early stunner from keyboardist Keith Tippett – served up with a punch and power that's missing from a lot of his later work! The music's a perfect blend of free-thinking jazz and some of the more progressive rock ideas of the time – not exactly jazz rock, not exactly avant jazz – but a really unique blend that flourished briefly in the UK for a handful years, under the guidance of Tippett and some of his key contemporaries! Deeper ideas are given a great sense of shape on the set – as Keith plays both acoustic and electric piano – in a cool combo that also includes Elton Dean on alto, Nick Evans on trombone, Mark Charig on cornet, and Alan Jackson on drums. The tracks have a nice little groove at the best moments – not really funky, but not that far off too – almost an echo of some of the MPS or other European styles. Titles include "This Evening Was Like Last Year", "I Wish There Was A Nowhere", "Violence", "Three Minutes From An Afternoon In July", and "Stately Dance For Miss Primm". CD

A jazzy combo with plenty of soul – working here with plenty of fusion undercurrents, but in a way that's tied together with some really great vocals on the top! The style's a bit like that of James Mason on his legendary Rhythm Of Life LP – soaring, righteous, and with some slightly cosmic elements – especially in the way the guitar, keyboards, and vibes come together with an upbeat sort of groove! Ted sings, plays piano and vibes, and wrote all the tunes for the set – and the album's a beautiful lost treasure that has plenty of greatness to offer – echoes of Bobby Hutcherson, Roy Ayers, and others – in addition to James Mason – but also a richly personal vibe that's all its own. Great tracks from the early years of the synthesizer in British music – or at least the early years of the form in mainstream styles – and not some of the colder, more academic modes of the past! Yet the music also mostly predates the big Brit electro pop explosion that would come right after some of these tracks – including work recorded by some of the artists in this collection, who are featured at a time when they were more lo-fi, homegrown, and experimental! Right at a time when the guitar was being reborn in British punk, artists like these took that inspiration and moved in another direction – in styles that are heavy on keyboards, but very different than in the generation of Fender Rhodes, moog, and Arp.
