Francois De RoubaixL'Essential Francois De Roubaix ... CD
Universal (France), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... $9.99 14.99
Some of the coolest soundtrack music you'll ever hope to hear – all played by a cat who could equally handle the sitar, guitar, Fender Rhodes, and electronics pictured on the cover! Francois De Roubaix is easily one of our favorite soundtrack composers ever – a French talent at the end of the 60s who never got the same international exposure as some of his countrymen, but who had an ear for odd instrumentation and funky undercurrents that rivals that of Serge Gainsbourg, Michel Colombier, or Jean-Claude Vannier – although we might even be tempted to say that Francois is even more way-out than any of them! This collection really lives up to its "essential" promise – and mixes together weird electronic numbers, bass-heavy funk tracks, jazzy groovers, and lots more – all with arrangements and production that are totally fresh, and which should turn you into the same sort of De Roubaix fanatic that we've been for years. Titles include "Le Samourai", "L'Homme Orchestre", "La Vie A Bord", "Les Caids", "Bataille Navale", "Clara 1939", "Journal De Bord", "Le Rapace", "La Scoumoune", "Dernier Domicile Connu", "Tom/Les Prisonniers", "Adieu L'Ami", and "Far From Dallas". There's just a hint of what's inside on the cover – and the collection features Led Zeppelin records from around the world, both full LPs and 7" pic sleeves – some on black vinyl, others on colored vinyl and strange pressings – all lovingly collected, and served up here in full color images throughout! Gladys Knight & The PipsEssential Gladys Knight & The Pips 1961 to 1965 ... CD
Sunset Blvd, Early 60s. New Copy 2CD ... $20.99 21.99
If you only know Gladys Knight from her Motown classics, or her big hits of the early 70s, you'll find a huge amount to discover here – because right from the start, the lady and her group were really something special! The idea of a male/female vocal group was a bit unique in the early 60s – not completely uncommon, but never handled with the perfection of Gladys Knight & The Pips – as the mixture of Knight's richly soulful lead and the harmonies of the trio of male singers was incredible – captured very strongly by Harlem producer Bobby Robinson, with singles that appeared on his own Fire/Fury label, and Vee Jay as well! There have been other sets that bring together work from this time, but this might be the most complete we've ever seen – 40 tracks in all, with a few alternates, and a few solo tracks by The Pips as well – titles that include "Operator", "Come See About Me", "Go Away Stay Away", "Who Knows", "Walking In Circles", "Jungle Love", "Linda", "Darling", "One More Lonely Night", "Every Beat Of My Heart", "Room In Your Heart", "It Hurts So Bad", "Letter Full Of Tears", "The Devil In Me", "Daybreak", "Lovers Always Forgive", and "How Do You Say Goodbye". Marcos ValleEssential Marcos Valle Vol 2 ... CD
Mr Bongo (UK), 1970s. Used ... $6.99
Amazing! One of our favorite records of all time! We totally love the work of Marcos Valle – and we can honestly say that he's probably our favorite Brazilian artist ever. Valle had an incredible musical vision, and he was one of those rare Brazilian talents – like Edu Lobo or Egberto Gismonti – who would forever change the face of music with his unique concepts. This set includes some of Valle's best-ever work – much of it long out of print and never properly reissued before. The groove begins with bossa nova, moves into baroque pop, jazzy funk, and incredibly complex MPB. Titles include "Tanto Andei", "Wanda Vidal", "Batucada Sergiu", "Azimuth", "Deus Brasileiro", "A Morte De Um Deus De Sal", "Garra", "Previsao Do Tempo", and "Taio Branco Forte". CD

Well, we don't know if we'd say that this is essential stuff, but it is a pretty nice compilation of tracks – it features many great moments stretching from the early bossa years through some of the best underground MPB of today. The groove is a mix of older and modern stuff, put together by UK DJ John Armstrong with an ear for work that provides a good cross-section of catchy numbers. Titles include "Mas Que Nada" by Tamba Trio, "Aqua De Beber" by Jobim, "Outro Inverno" by Sylvia Patricia, "Milagre" by Quarteto Em Cy, "Para Raio" by As Meninas, "Swing De Campo Grande" by Os Novos Baianos, "Samba De Orly" by Chico Buarque, "Freio Aerodynamico" by Marcos Valle, "Muito Obrigado" by Djavan, "Vento De Maio" by Elis Regina, "Taj Mahal/Fio Maravilha/Pais Tropical" by Jorge Ben, "Ambar" by Maria Bethania, "Cena" by Beatriz Azevedo, "Samba De Flora" by Airto, "Tiro Ao Alvaro" by Adoniran Barbosa, "Rapunzel" by Daniel Mercury, and "O Dia Em Que Faremos Contato" by Lenine. BGP (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 2LP ... $22.99 26.99
Classic breaks – all the way through – the kind of sharp funky nuggets that have had a rich new life, thanks to their use in hip hop and club tracks in recent years! This may not be the most underground stuff in the world to those out there who've been digging through crates for funk and soul for the past ten years, but it is an exquisite compilation that features some of the best funky tracks used as samples by hip hoppers, nearly every one of them a famous cut that you'll probably recognize in a minute! Titles include "I Like It" by The Emotions, "Dance To The Drummer's Beat" by Herman Kelly, "Cramp Your Style" by All The People, "Hard Times" by Baby Huey, "Ghetto: Misfortune's Wealth" by 24 Carat Black, "Kool Is Back" by Funk Inc, "Our Generation" by Ernie Hines, "Heaven & Hell" by 20th Century Steel Band, "Unhooked Generation" by Freda Payne, "Papa Was, Too" by Joe Tex, "Just A Groove In G" by Wilbur Bascomb & The Zodiac, "Be Thankful For What You Got" by William De Vaughn, and "You're Getting A Little Too Smart" by The Detroit Emeralds. 18 cuts in all! ✨✧ VariousSuper Breaks 3 – Essential Funk, Soul & Jazz Samples and Breakbeats ... LP
BGP/Ace (UK), Late 60s/1970s. New Copy 2LP ... $22.99 26.99
More funky breaks than Evel Knevel after the Snake River Canyon jump! The groove hounds at BGP records were set loose on the Ace catalog – which includes holdings from Atlantic, Stax, Volt, Westbound, and other funky classic labels – and they managed to come up with a killer batch of funky cuts, even though this is their 3rd dip into the crates! If anything, perhaps they dipped even deeper this time – especially as some of the once-trusted sources for breaks, like the famous Ultimate Breaks & Beats series, are now disappearing from the market. Titles include "Soul Pad" by The Coasters, "I Walk On Gilded Splinters" by Johnny Jenkins, "T Plays It Cool" by Marvin Gaye, "Nappy Dugout" by Funkadelic, "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" by Jimmy Ponder, "Get Out Of My Life Woman" by The Mad Lads, "The Rose" by 50 Foot Hose, "Holy Ghost" by The Bar Kays, "No Strings Attached" by The Mad Lads, "After Laughter Comes Tears" by Wendy Rene, "River's Invitation" by Freddie Robinson, "This House Is Smokin" by BT Express, "Music Man (parts 1 & 2)" by Pleasure Web, and "I'm Afraid The Masquerade Is Over" by David Porter. VariousWestbound Super Breaks – Essential Funk, Soul, Jazz Samples, & Breakbeats (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Ace/Westbound (UK), Early 70s. New Copy 2LP ... $22.99 24.99
Deep deep funk from the legendary Westbound label – the important early home to Ohio Players and Funkadelic, but also host to some other great funky groups too! In keeping with the name, the cuts here focus on the kind of Westbound tracks that have great drum breaks in their groove – or which stand out as great selections for sampling, too – but all presented with the same sort of care, research, and attention to detail that the Ace label brings to all of their famous soul collections! In other words, the whole thing's got all the sharp edges and funky beats as one of those dodgy sample collections – but the sound is better, the tracks are legit, and the whole thing features detailed notes as well. Titles include "Kissing My Love" by Spanky Wilson, "Funky Worm" by Ohio Players, "Suzie Thundertussy" by Junie, "You & Your Folks Me & My Folks" by Funkadelic, "Music Man (part 2)" by Pleasure Web, "Back From The Dead" by King Errisson, "You're Gettin A Little Too Smart" by The Detroit Emeralds, "Pack Of Lies" by The Counts, "Funk It Down" by Caesar Frazier, "Good Old Music" by Mgictones, "The Fuz & Da Boog" by Fuzzy Haskins, "Heartbreaker Of The Year" by Denise LaSalle, "Does He Treat You Better" by Unique Blend, "Baby Let Me Take You In My Arms" by Detroit Emeralds, "Mixed Up Moods & Attitudes (Tom Moulton mix)" by Fantastic Four, "Tightrope (single mix)" by Junie, and "I'll Bet You" by Funkadelic. ✨✧ BlackbyrdsWalking In Rhythm – The Essential Selection 1973 to 1980 ... CD
Fantasy/Decision, 1970s. New Copy 2 CDs ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Some of the sharpest, jazziest funk you'll ever hope to hear – a smoking collection of the legendary 70s work by The Blackbyrds on Fantasy Records! The group started as a jazz combo under Donald Byrd's supervision – right at a time when Byrd was making his own fantastic funky records in the 70s – but working for the Bay Area Fantasy label, they really took off into an amazing groove that was all their own – still informed by jazz, but free to open up to lots of funk and soul elements too – sometimes with vocals in the lead, sometimes more focus on the kinds of solos that always set them apart from all their contemporaries! The cuts have some wonderful keyboard work from a young Kevin Toney – who's gone onto a lot of fame over the years – and production on all cuts is either by Larry Mizell, Donald Byrd, or George Duke – key 70s jazz funk forces who keep things mighty tight in the studio! The package features work from all Blackbyrds albums of the 70s – including the Cornbread Earl & Me soundtrack, and the Night Grooves remix set – and the package features 25 titles that include "Enter In", "Party Land", "Do It Fluid", "Gut Level", "Summer Love", "I Need You", "The Baby", "Blackbyrds' Theme", "City Life", "Rock Creek Park", "Walking In Rhythm", "A Hot Day Today", "Wilford's Gone", "One Gun Salute", "Supernatural Feeling", "Mysterious Vibes", and "Soft & Easy". DRG, 2014. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A tremendous tribute to 100 years of Dorival Caymmi – the legendary Brazilian singer/songwriter who helped pave the way for bossa nova, Tropicalia, and so many other sounds to come! Unlike the beautiful 90th birthday album for Caymmi, in which he was still alive and able to participate – this set features other artists, including key family members, coming together in rich reworkings of his best compositions – done in a sophisticated blend of older Brazilian modes that's similar to some of the best Biscoito Fino projects in recent years. Mario Adnet put the album together with Dori Caymmi – and the set features performances by Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, Chico Buarque, Nana Caymmi, and Danilo Caymmi – as well as Adnet and Dori – on titles that include "O Que E Que A Baiana Tem", "Saudade Da Bahia", "Sargaco Nar", "Dora", "Vatapa", "Nem Eu", "Samba Da Minha Terra", "A Vizinha Do Lado", and "Cancao Da Partida". ✨✧ Francis LaiFrancis Lai – The Essential Film Music Collection ... CD
King/Silva, 2009. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A surprisingly nice new recording from Francis Lai – the French soundtrack kind of the 60s, thanks to his work for A Man & A Woman and Live For Life – and an artist we always love in just about any format! The set features new recordings of some of Lai's best soundtrack themes – some of which rose to big fame on the international scene, others of which are lesser-known gems from his long history working with director Claude Lelouch! The recordings are contemporary, but the presentation is wonderful – mostly played by a small group of sensitive musicians, with relatively classic instrumentation – none of the too-modern touches that were sometimes used in recordings of this nature by Lai in the 70s or 80s. Given that most of the soundtracks featured here are out of print on CD, the set's a great way to get some of this music – especially since the new recordings came off so well. Titles include "Itineraire D'Un Enfant Gate", "La Belle Histoire", "La Course Du Lievre A Travers Les Champs", "13 Jours En France", "Bilitis", "Concerto Pour La Fin D'Un Amour", "Les Ripoux", "Mayerling", "Vivre Pour Vivre", "La Lecon Particuliere", "Le Genre Humain", "Le Passager De La Pluie", "Les Etoiles Du Cinema", and "Pour L'Amour De Tes Yeux Noirs". Way more than just a typical collection of rare funk and soul – as the selections here not only meet the stunningly high standards of the BGP label – but they've also been sampled in more recent years for hip hop records and other contemporary recordings! Essentially, you've got the best of both worlds – vintage funk from the late 60s and early 70s – brought together in a great collection – and work that's gone onto form the blueprint for contemporary urban sounds as well – which means you'll probably recognize some or part of most of these songs from their use in more contemporary recordings. Nearly every cut's been sampled at least more than once – and titles include "Blind Alley" by The Emotions, "Chick A Boom" by Pazant Brothers, "Eva" by Jean Jacques Perry, "Walk Tall" by Cannonball Adderley, "Baby Let Me Take You In My Arms" by Detroit Emeralds, "Bouncy Lady" by Pleasure, "Tramp" by Lowell Fulson, "Take Yo Praise" by Camille Yarbrough, "Thinking Single" by The Counts, "Different Strokes" by Syl Johnson, "Ike's Mood" by Isaac Hayes, "What A Man" by Linda Lynell, and "Smokey Joe's La La" by Googie Rene. Fantasy/Decision, 1970s/Early 80s. New Copy 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
A jazzy combo with a heart of soul – and a group who may well be one of our favorite funk groups from the 70s! Pleasure has an amazing way of being tight, yet never slick or commercial – a sound that's right on the money, but far from the mainstream too – which has kept them at the top of the stacks for crate-diggers and rare groove collectors for years! This sweet double-length package is a very well-chosen set of their gems for Fantasy records, and a few later tracks for RCA – a really expansive look at all that's great about the group – with classics mixed with overlooked album cuts and some great funky numbers you might have missed otherwise. Nearly everything Pleasure ever cut is fantastic, but this set is even more fantastic than the rest – and features 25 titles that include "Bouncy Lady", "Dust Yourself Off", "Joyous", "Ghettos Of The Mind", "Only You", "Sassafras Girl", "Glide", "Farewell Goodbye", "Special Things", "Thoughts Of Old Flames", "Give It Up", "Sending My Love", "Stone Love", "Glide (special disco rmx)", "Space Is The Place", "Living Without You", "Let's Dance", and a previously unreleased "Foxy Lady (disco version)". Roy's so great, we'd be hard pressed to sum up his genius in a simple greatest hits set – but we love his work so much, that any sort of collection is always a treat! The set brings together 15 of Roy's hippest numbers for Polydor – including some early funk tracks that have now become beathead classics, next to sweeter soul-based numbers that should have been huge, as well as a few uptempo groovers that are always a treat on the dancefloor! Roy's warm, jazzy, and soulful throughout – and titles include "You Send Me", "For Real", "He's A Superstar", "Everybody Loves The Sunshine", "Running Away", "Love Will Bring Us Back Together", "We Live In Brooklyn Baby", "Searching", "Coffy Is The Color", "Don't Stop The Feeling", "Mystic Voyage", and "What You Won't Do For Love". Jim HallComplete Jazz Guitar (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Pacific Jazz/Essential Jazz (Spain), 1957. Used ... $6.99
A rare early trio set from Jim Hall – especially noteworthy because Jim rarely worked as a leader in the format! The album's got Hall working with Carl Perkins on piano and Red Mitchell on bass – in a mode that slightly recalls some of Barney Kessel's mid 50s recordings over at Contemporary Records, but which also has that airier style that was Hall's first great calling card on his instrument. Some of the best cuts really have the notes hanging in air with incredible grace and a very subtle sense of swing – and titles include "This Is Always", "Look For The Silver Lining", "Stella By Starlight", "Deep In A Dream", "Seven Come Eleven", and "Thanks For The Memory". CD presents the full, unabridged version of the album – with the track "This Is Always", and full master takes for each number. Vault/Essential, Mid 60s. New Copy ... $12.99 14.98
A very dreamy set of bossa work – recorded in the US by singer Anna Margarida, with a gentle feel that's even warmer than most of the work coming out of Brazil at the time! The approach is maybe a bit more understated than a bossa album on Verve, but has a lot of the same elements – especially touches of jazz mixed in with the larger arrangements, and some surprising instrumental flourishes that really keep things interesting! Lyrics are in Portuguese and English, and arrangements are by Dave Roberts – who brings a nice laidback sound to the album that almost sounds like some of the records on Capitol at the time, and which has some nice soundtracky touches too. Titles include "Tristeza De Amor", "Cancao Do Amanhecer", "Veleiro", "Why", and "The Fool On The Hill" – plus a great version of "If We Lived On Top Of A Mountain". CD

Charlie ParkerCharlier Parker Plays Cole Porter (aka Genius Of Charlie Parker #5 – with bonus tracks) ... CD
Verve/Essential Jazz (Spain), Early 50s/1954. Used ... $4.99
Charlie Parker takes on the music of Cole Porter – with results that make for some of his most classic moments at Verve! Parker's horn is as hard-bitten as always, but it's also working here in a slightly lyrical vibe – one that brings out the warmth that Charlie could have at just the right moments – that sense of soul that made his contribution to jazz one of the more formative sounds of the century! Porter's music takes on tones that we might never have expected – especially in some of the album's alternate versions, which give key proof that Bird was always working out new ideas with each new solo. The group features Walter Bishop on piano, Billy Bauer or Jerome Darr on guitar, Teddy Kotick on bass, and Roy Haynes or Art Taylor on drums – on titles that include "Just One Of Those Things", "I Get A Kick Out Of You", "Love For Sale", and "I Love Paris. A great collection – 4 CDs worth of Charlie Parker's recordings for the Savoy label – done between the years 1944-1948, with some of the best talents in the bop business! The set's got an overwhelming amount of alternate takes – perhaps a bit too many, but if you're the kind of Bird-o-phile who digs that sort of thing, you've got plenty of alternate solos to choose from here. Verve/Essential Jazz (Spain), Mid 50s. Used 3 CDs ... $24.99
A massive collection of work by pianist Teddy Wilson – some of his greatest recordings ever, done mostly for the Verve Records label, and all in the company of drummer Jo Jones! Although Jones can be quite bold on some sessions, he's got a wonderfully laidback feeling here – a style that's still quite rhythmic, but which defers strongly to Wilson's presence in the lead – in a way that gives Teddy plenty of space to open up and do his thing! Bassists include Milt Hinton, Gene Ramey, and Al Lucas – all of whom play with a relatively restrained quality as well – so that many numbers almost feel like solo Wilson tracks, given the up-close presence of the piano. 3CD set features material from the albums For Quiet Lovers, I Got Rhythm, The Impeccable Mr Wilson, and These Tunes Remind Me Of You – plus a bonus session from 1954 that also features Benny Carter on alto sax. 57 tracks in all! Green's solo ability is still quite good – and on the more uptempo tunes, he solos with that versatility and amazing dexterity that you'd find on his best earlier sessions. Essential, 1960s/1970s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Well, they definitely got the "strange" in the title right here – as the collection is one of the oddest assortment of Holiday tunes we've ever heard – but that's also what makes us like it so much too! We love Christmas music – and while we were raised on the classics, we're always a lot more partial to the weirder corners of the sound of December – the sorts of one-off recordings or overlooked singles that offer up a greatly expanded vision of Christmas in the US, and which reminds us just how big the Holiday music industry is, if you know where to look! The folks who put together this set definitely knew where to look – as they've come up with 20 tracks across a variety of genres – including 60s soul and rock – almost all of which we'd never heard before. Titles include "Please Come Home For Christmas" by Johnny Winter, "Blue Grey Christmas" by King Coleman, "Moisha Got Run Over By A Wheelchair" by 2 Live Jews, "The Real Meaning Of Christmas" by Nino & The Ebb Tides, "El Burrito De Belen" by Lazarito, "Jingle Bells" by Rita Moss, "White Christmas Disco" by Back To Back, "Merry Twistmas" by Milt Patrick, "Give Me Christmas Time" by The Reindeers, "Hawaiian Santa" by The Surfers, "Santa Won't Be Blue This Christmas" by Jimmy Charles, "Christmas In November" by Slim Pickens, "Teenage Santa Claus" by Babs Gonzales, and "Santa Claus Has Fallen In Love" by Swamp Dogg. An excellent album by one of the greatest Brazilian funk bands ever – a wonderful blend of funk, jazz, and soul – and a set that rivals any of the best work coming from the US at the time! These guys are right on the money right from the start – moving through sharp changes with effortless ease, yet never in a way that's too slick or commercial – kind of like that perfect balance that Kool & The Gang hit for just a few records in the mid 70s – but with more of a Brazilian feel overall. A soul record we'd put up there with some of our favorites produced in Chicago during the early 70s – a gospel album from Pastor TL Barrett, but one that's gone on to legendary status among funk and soul collectors over the years! Barrett works here with his Youth For Christ Choir, of Mt. Zion Baptist Church – a south side ensemble that's filled with genuine spirit and passion, aimed towards lofty ideals – but set up with some deep secular soul production touches and instrumentation that keep things razor sharp throughout! The album was cut at the affordable Sound Market Studio – but behind the soaring, spirited lead and chorus vocal arrangements are players supervised by Chess Records sax player and arranger Gene Barge – with other Chess players Richard Evans and Phil Upchurch on the sessions too. Raw drums, grooving organ, and incredible bass lines lay the foundation, but it's the voices that really shine on this completely wonderful, totally essential set! However, there's also some incredible LP tracks with a very Pet Sounds-ish kind of approach to them – tracks like "Don't Hurt My Little Sister", "Please Let Me Wonder", "She Knows Me Too Well", and "In The Back Of My Mind", all of which are essential Beach Boys listening. There's a few other silly tracks on the record, though – as there are on the Summer Days LP – but that one also features a few nice moments, like "You're So Good To Me" and "Let Him Run Wild", both excellent Brian Wilson tunes! The start of an amazing legacy in Brazilian music – and a record that really lives up to its title! Jorge Ben completely reinvents the samba here – and comes up with his own new groove in the process – by blending sharp acoustic guitar lines with rootsy percussion – all at a level that's far more rhythmic than the used of the instrument in bossa nova. There's definitely a bossa element – but Joao's singing is a lot more soulful, as is the overall performance – and the styles started here not only launched Ben's career, but also had a huge influence on generations of musicians to come! A fantastic book of images from the early 80s hip hop scene in New York – put together by a photographer who was right on the scene for a number of key years – and snapped hundreds of images of performers, clubs, street scenes, graffiti artists, and all the other forces that made hip hop happen! The book's a bit like the classic Back In The Days by Jamel Shabazz, but it also goes even further – as Bramly managed to capture a heck of a lot of key DJs and rappers, and also includes comments and memories from many of them too – snippets of text that are every bit as essential as the images – although the images are more than enough on their own! Quartin/Far Out (UK), 1970. New Copy ... $9.99 16.99
A fantastic double-length set – two full albums of music, essential for any fan of Brazilian jazz – or even jazz in general! First up is Esperanto – an incredible album from one of Brazil's greatest reed players of the 70s – the mighty Victor Assis Brasil – a free-thinking spirit who really took Brazilian jazz in bold new directions at the time! The record shows Victor absorbing a lot of post-Coltrane influences, and blending them with a tight approach to rhythm – laid down here by Dom Salvador on piano (and organ), Edison Lobo on bass, and Edson Machando on drums. The group is completed by Helio Delmiro on guitar, and Claudio Roditi plays trumpet on one track – but the real highlight is the amazing reed work by Brasil, which is filled with soul and warmth, plus a deep sense of exploration. The whole session was put together by Roberto Quartin in 1970 – and it's still extremely fresh today. Titles include "Children", "Gingerbread Boy", "Senegal", and "Marilia". Next is Toca Antonio Carlos Jobim – a fantastic album from this legendary Brazilian saxophonist – and one that's way different than the usual instrumental reading of the music of Antonio Carlos Jobim! The setting is less of a bossa-inspired one than a post-Coltrane mode – as Victor Assis Brasil blows alto sax, and a bit of soprano – on long, stretched out versions of Jobim compositions – often given a bit of modal energy, thanks to the group's strong piano and organ performances by Dom Salvador. The rest of the players are all great, too – Helio Delmiro on guitar, Edson Lobo on bass, and Edison Machado on drums – all players who grew up in the bossa jazz years of the 60s, but who here are set free to explore new territory by producer Roberto Quartin. The whole thing's wonderful – and titles include "Bonita", "Wave", "So Tinha De Ser Come Voce", and "Dindi". CD also features two bonus tracks – alternate takes of "Ao Amigo Quartin" and "Marilla". Okeh, 2015. Used ... $8.99
A really beautiful project from the great Dee Dee Bridgewater – a set that has the singer paying tribute to the city and culture of New Orleans, but in a way that's free of the hoke you'd find in other projects of this nature! Dee Dee approaches the music – as with all of her albums – from a rock-solid, jazz vocal approach – focusing first on her tremendous skills as a singer – her fantastic ability to interpret material and really make it her own – then finding space for other flourishes that color the compositions, with great help from Irvin Mayfield, who's at the instrumental helm of the project. And the tunes aren't just some post-Katrina soppy numbers trying to recreate the past – but a wonderful array of different selections that both echo the still-thriving, still-essential jazz culture in the city, and the range of 20th century expressions of its music. Way better than you might guess – and one of Bridgewater's best in years! An explosion of funk from the mighty James Brown – some of the hardest-hitting singles James cut during his 60s run at King Records – served up here in a massive 2CD set! This essential fifth volume in the Singles series covers the key years of 1967 to 1969 – a pre-Polydor point when James was really letting loose with his late 60s band – inventing and re-inventing new grooves nearly every time they stepped into the studio, then releasing their brilliance in an all-great stream of singles that set a whole new standard for the funky 45! The cuts here are all tremendous – and run the gamut from instrumental groovers to hard soul belters – almost all uptempo, choppy, and with that wicked sort of groove that's the best sort of vibe we associate with James all these many years later. The 43 track set features a and b-side recordings from all Brown's singles from late 1967 through early 1969 – then offers up full session details on the material too – really essential notes if you've only ever enjoyed these gems as vinyl 45s. The approach here is quite similar to the pair's work on Places & Spaces – tight, but loose at the same time – with Donald delivering solos that are very different than his work from the 60s, while Mizell finds this way to mix together all sorts of instruments, at so many different levels – but with a clarity that's mindblowing. Most tracks have a nice groove, a few points feature a touch of vocals – and titles include the classic, and oft-sampled "Think Twice" – plus "We're Together", "Makin It", "Rock & Roll Again", "I Love The Girl", and "You Are The World". ECM, 1971. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold ... $29.99
An essential 2LP set that's just about the only vinyl release you can find that documents the work of the legendary (and short-lived) Circle group – an important avant jazz combo that featured Anthony Braxton, Chick Corea, Dave Holland, and Barry Altschul. The record captures a Parisian concert from 1971, and the band runs through a great reading of Wayne Shorter's "Nefertitti", plus original material like "Duet", "Toy Room – Q&A", "Song For The Newborn", and "Lookout Farm". John ColtraneColtrane (Impulse) ... CD
Impulse/MCA, 1962. Used ... $5.99
One of John Coltrane's best early albums for Impulse – a warm set of modally grooving tracks, and one that picks up where My Favorite Things left off! The group here features McCoy Tyner, Jimmy Garrison, and Elvin Jones – perfectly fitting with Coltrane's tenor and soprano sax, and transforming familiar tunes with amazing ease. The album includes sublime readings of "The Inch Worm" and "Out Of This World" – plus the tracks "Soul Eyes", "Tunji", and "Miles' Mode". Great stuff – and an essential album for any jazz collection! John ColtraneJupiter Variation – The Mastery Of John Coltrane Vol 3 ... CD
Impulse (Japan), 1966/1967. New Copy ... $14.99
Fantastic late Coltrane work – recorded in 1966 and 1967, but not issued until this release from 1978! The record features 4 tracks from the golden years. Two cuts – "Leo" and "Jupiter (Variations)" feature Coltrane playing spare, beautiful duets with Rashied Ali on drums. The track "Number One" features Trane in a quartet with Alice Coltrane on piano, Jimmy Garrison on bass, and Ali on drums. And "Peace On Earth" features Alice, Charlie Haden, Ali, and Pharoah Sanders. It was previously issued with overdubbed strings on the World Galaxy album – but it's issued here in the better stripped-down version. Very nice – and essential Coltrane material! CD

John ColtraneLove Supreme – Live In Seattle ... CD
Impulse, 1965. New Copy ... $13.99 14.99
A fantastic addition to the John Coltrane catalog, and a set that's wonderful for so many different reasons it's hard to fit them all in one short passage! As the title implies, the album features a rare live performance of "Love Supreme" – done in 1965, when the work was new both to the world, and the classic Coltrane quartet with McCoy Tyner on piano, Jimmy Garrison on bass, and Elvin Jones on drums. Yet the version here is also very different than the album reading – looser, with more "interlude" passages – at a level that already has the group drinking in the spirit of the tune, and finding a way to rise with a new spiritual majesty! Another key part of the recording is the presence of Pharoah Sanders on tenor – making a very early appearance with the group – amidst a septet lineup that also features a very young Carlos Ward on alto, and Donald Rafael Garrett on bass – players who expand the lineup in ways that show some of Coltrane's growing experiments past the quartet structure. The whole thing was recorded at the Penthouse Club in Seattle – a place that's given us some other fantastic "lost" recordings from the 60s in recent years – and the record is essential listening, even if you own the studio Love Supreme record, or any other Coltrane records at all. John ColtraneMy Favorite Things ... CD
Atlantic, 1961. Used ... $1.99
Wonderful wonderful wonderful work from the legendary John Coltrane – and even though it's probably one of his best-selling albums of all time, it's still a treasure – and has an essential place in just about any jazz collection! We've heard the original title version of "My Favorite Things" a million times – but it still blows our mind the way Coltrane hits this incredibly soulful modal groove, twisting and turning on soprano sax, always keeping things interesting, so that we're surprised that the cut's 13 minutes have gone by so quickly! The rest of the record's equally great – and the 3 other long cuts are "Everytime We Say Goodbye", "Summertime" and "But Not for Me". As great today as when it was cut, and still one of Coltrane's most revelatory albums! With McCoy Tyner on piano, Steve Davis on bass, and Elvin Jones on drums. CD

Incredible work from John Coltrane's Newport Jazz Festival sets from 1963 and 1965 – totally amazing work from Trane and his superior quartet of McCoy Tyner on piano, Jimmy Garrison on bass, and Elvin Jones on drums – nearly 1 1/2 hours of essential avant garde! This CD features a trio of pieces from each year, "I Want To Talk About You", "My Favorite Things" and "Impressions" from '63 – plus One Done, One Up and "My Favorite Things" from '65 – with an endearing intro by Father Norman O'Connor for the '65 parts. John ColtraneSelflessness ... CD
Impulse (Japan), 1963/1965. New Copy ... $14.99
A great set of unreleased recordings that was issued after John Coltrane's death, but which stands as an essential chapter in his groundbreaking body of work for Impulse! The album features 2 tracks recorded at the Newport Jazz fest in 1963 – both with Roy Haynes on drums, plus the usual McCoy Tyner/Jimmy Garrison lineup. One of these cuts is a very long reading of "My Favorite Things" – with a sweet loping modal groove, but soloing that is quite a bit more "out" than the famous studio version. The 3rd track on the album – "Selflessness" – was recorded in LA in 1965, and it features Raphael Don Garrett on bass clarinet, adding some nice Dolphy-esque touches. CD

Norman ConnorsValentine Love – The Buddah/Arista Anthology ... CD (UK), 1970s/Early 80s. New Copy 2 CDS ... $16.99 24.99
A fantastic collection of work from Norman Connors – a musician who first started out playing drums in spiritual jazz groups at the start of the 70s, then moved on to take over the worlds of funk and soul! Connors' material of this time was essential at bringing a new sort of depth to soul music – taking some of the lessons learned in the farther reaches of the underground, and working them into a new tapestry of sophisticated expression – sounds that were able to fold together lots of styles and spirit, and help elevate their audience at the same time. This package might be the best we've ever seen to bring together Norman's work of the period – as it also includes some of the Aquarian Dream and Starship Orchestra recordings, as well as Connors tracks with singers who include Michael Henderson, Jean Carn, Gloria Jones, Prince Philip Mitchell, Phyliss Hyman, Eleanor Mills, James Robinson, Al Johnson, and Beau Williams. 34 tracks in all – and titles include "So Much Love", "Dindi", "Saturday Night Special", "We Both Need Each Other", "Captain Connors (12" version)", "Say You Love Me", "This Is Your Life", "Stella", "Handle Me Gently", "Your Love", "Invitation", "Be There In The Morning", "Take It To The Limit", "Mr C", "She's Gone", "You've Been On My Mind", "Melancholy Fire", "Romantic Journey", "Slewfoot", "Give The Drummer Some", "Valentine Love", "Once I've Been There", "Phoenix", "Once Again", "You Are My Starship", "Betcha By Golly Wow", "Kwasi", "Maiden Voyage", and "Disco Land". Essential! The mighty debut album from African disciples Culture pairing up with the Mighty Two, Joe Gibbs and Errol Thompson is one of the landmark sets of roots reggae, a defining moment of the genre dropped during the year when two sevens clashed. And though the apocalypse didn't rain down from the skies in '77, this album was certainly a world-changing event, one of the finest moments in Kingston's rich musical history! Gibbs provides the trio with a set of uplifting rhythms over which to harmonize, and Culture comes correct on every track, combining a tightly harmonized approach with a rawer, rootsier sound. 10 tracks in all, including "I'm Alone In The Wilderness", "Pirate Days", "Two Sevens Clash", "Caling Rastafari", "I'm Not Ashamed", 'Get Ready To Ride The Lion To Zion", "Black Starliner Must Come", "Jah Pretty Face", 'See Them A Come" and "Natty Dread Taking Over". The balance here is great, and the set brings the metal man of mystery into great play with his collaborators and guests who include DMC, Kendra Morris, and Del The Funky Homosapien – all coming together on an album that's every bit as fun as the first time around, and maybe even more essential, given that we're not going to hear that much more from the unissued archives of MF Doom. Joao DonatoMad Donato (Gozando A Existencia/Naquele Base/Janela Da Urca/Rarities) (4CD set) ... CD
Discobertas (Brazil), 1970s/1980s. New Copy 4CD ... $49.99
A huge addition to the 70s and 80s catalog of keyboardist Joao Donato – pulled from a time when the bossa genius wasn't getting as much time to record as before, but was still overflowing with fantastic new ideas! The set begins with a CD of rarities – including keyboard-heavy demos done around the same time as his albums Quem E Quem and Lugar Comum – then flows into three later albums that are all superb too – that post-bossa blend of jazz, electricity, and soulful currents that's continued to grow into later years too! Instrumentation is a mix of electric and acoustic albums, arranged with that brilliantly blue quality that Donato could do so well – and all the records are nicely understated, but extremely powerful too. Most tracks have vocals, but draw as much from the piano and keyboards as the lyrics – and titles include "Gol da Corei", "Palhacada", "Zra Zra", "Toshiro", "Olho D'Agua", "Na Raia", "Fim De Sonho", "Testamento", "O Fundo", "Naquela Base", "Nua Ideia", "Varanda", "Que Bobeira", "Baixo Zingu", "Lua Dourada", "Pelo Avesso", and "O Amor Se Derrama". 40 tracks in all – and an essential collection! Earth Wind & FireLast Days & Time ... CD
Columbia, 1972. New Copy ... $5.99 6.99
Earth Wind & Fire's first album for Columbia Records – the start of a really legendary run during the 70s! The sound here is a bit tighter than their first two for Warner Brothers – a groove that has funk and soul taking a bit more precedence over the jazz of their roots – but all in a blend that's completely fresh and unique, and which takes all the righteous energy of the past, and focuses it here even more strongly! And while the groovers are great, there's also a few sweet numbers that are almost even better – some slightly mellow tracks that don't hit that commercial ballad sound of the group's later years – and which almost have an earthy, organic feel overall. The whole thing's tremendous – truly essential work by the group at their best – and titles include "I'd Rather Have You", "They Don't See", "Make It With You", "Remember The Children", "Mom", "Power", and "Time Is On Your Side". ✨✧ Bill EvansTokyo Concert ... LP
Fantasy, 1973. Near Mint- ... $39.99
A great live date from Bill Evans – one of his essential sides of the 70s, even if you've already got a bunch of other Evans live material! We know what you're thinking: "Do I have this one? Seems to be a lot of tunes here that I've got on other Evans recordings." But take it from us, this set's a real winner – beautifully recorded despite a larger venue performance in Tokyo – and captured with all the grace, poise, and gentle-flowing genius of Evans in his best better-known live dates – a real antidote to some of the other 70s live albums that might have been better left unissued. Everyone's at the top of their game here – Eddie Gomez on bass with those round warm tones, Marty Morrell on drums with his simple spare rhythms, and Evans himself with a sound that's bold then quiet then bold then soft – beautiful throughout, and really setting fire. Titles include "My Romance", "Yesterday I Heard The Rain", "Mornin Glory", "Up With The Lark", "When Autumn Comes", "TTTT", "Gloria's Step", and "Hullo Bolinas". LP, Vinyl record album

4 MarsSuper Somali Sounds From The Gulf Of Tadjoura ... CD
Ostinato (UK), Late 80s/Early 90s. New Copy ... $19.99 20.99
Maybe the first-ever collection of the work of this important group from Djibouti – a huge state-financed ensemble whose performances were captured on tape for radio, but never issued as regular commercial albums at the time! 4 Mars take their name from a key moment of independence in the young nation – and they're a very powerful force on these recordings from the 80s and early 90s – bringing together a huge amount of current concepts from the East African scene, all within a very large, shifting array of singers, percussionists, and horn players too! At times, the rhythms almost seem to echo Jamaican music, but there's also currents of Ethiopian and Sudanese styles too – no surprise, given the crossroads of Djibouti, which maybe makes the group as welcoming to outside styles as they are importantly representing their nation's culture. As with other sets on the Ostinato label, the package is an essential look at sounds we never would have heard otherwise – rescued from the tape archive of the national radio station, and presented here with very detailed notes on the music and culture at the time. Titles include "Abaal", "Inkaar Waalid", "Lama Rabeen Karo", "Daroor", "Hobalayeey Nabadu", "Natesha", "Maalkii Runta Ahaa Anigaa Ka Roooree", and "Tilman Baa Lagu Socodaa". CD

If you liked the first volume of this essential book, you'll love this revised edition – because it's almost 3 times bigger, and stuffed with great new features! The book's a lifetime labor of love for Freddy Fresh – an extensive discography that's got to be the most definitive book on early hip hop we've ever seen! The vintage of the titles listed in the book is 1979 to 1994 – and as Freddy says in the preface, there's a few records listed that may fall outside the rap genre or that time span, including some disco and electro numbers – but that's okay by us! The book's got tons of label scans – plus entries listed alphabetically by label and then in order by catalog number – and this exhaustive project reads like your dream want-list for years and years to come. Plus, in addition to the label and record listings, there's appendices with old school flyer scans, top picks from DJs and producers all over the globe, lists of resources for finding records and Freddy's own personal lists for records, including his "5 star" rated records, and songs and singles arranged by topic. One of the greatest writers on singers presents his essential collection of albums from the 20th century – all served up with the kind of loving detail that's always made the prose of Will Friedwald so great! This time, Friedwald expands that later genre – and offers up full chapters that go in depth to some key vocal jazz classics – including Something Cool by June Christy, My Gentleman Friend by Blossom Dearie, Ella In Berlin by Ella Fitzgerald, John Coltrane & Johnny Hartman, Rain Or Shine by Dick Haymes, Lady In Satin by Billie Holiday, Black Coffee by Peggy Lee, and even Belly Of The Sun by Cassandra Wilson! ✨✧ GatursWasted ... CD
Tuff City/Funky Delicacies, Early 70s. New Copy ... $9.99 14.99
An essential bit of funkiness from this obscure New Orleans funk combo! The Gaturs' frontman was keyboardist Willie Tee – who went on to greater fame as a jazz and session player – but we like him best at this early point, when he was wailing away on organ in a tight choppy small group setting. The Gaturs clearly deserve any praise you could heap on them – and their work on this album's a perfect match with the New Orleans funk of Eddie Bo and The Meters. Most of the material was recorded in New Orleans, but only ever issued on 7" singles – and this is the first LP that the group have ever had under their name. Titles include "Cold Bear", "Booger Man", "Gatur Bait", "Hunk Of Funk", "Funky Funky Twist", "Wasted", and "Yeah, You Right". Plus, the CD contains 5 great bonus cuts, including "Sweet Thing"! CD
