Flaming EmberSunshine (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Hot Wax/Demon (UK), 1971. New Copy (reissue)... $26.99
A smoking little set from Flaming Ember – a rock group at the core, but one who has plenty of blue-eyed soul in the mix – thanks to great production from Greg Perry, and strong arrangements from HB Barnum and McKinley Jackson – all of whom give the record a vibe that's right up there with the best Hot Wax/Invictus soul sets of the time! There's a nice amount of fuzz in the grooves – that post-Motown style that uses lots of great bass and guitar alongside core Detroit soul modes – and although the vocals have more of a rockish approach, the instrumental undercurrent is a great mix of funk, rock, and soul! Titles include the sweet soul ballad "Sunshine", plus the cuts "Ember Blues", "1200 Miles From Heaven", "Livin High Money Low", "Gotta Get Away", "Heart On Lovin You", "Stop The World & Let Me Off", and "Ding Need Dong". Polly NilesSunshine In My Rainy Day Mind (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Ember/Grapefruit (UK), 1970. New Copy 2CD ... $15.99
An unreleased album from singer Polly Niles – a unique talent with a style that fits in strongly with some of the rising tide of female vocalists rising up at the start of the 70s – an elite group that might include Joni Mitchell, Carly Simon, and Carole King! Polly's much more obscure than both, of course, but has similar roots – an American singer with experience in folk music, turning towards different modes at the end of the 60s – recording here for the British Ember label, who did a really great job with production, but then never managed to get the record past test pressing stage! Niles has a voice that contains all the earnestness of a folk singer, but none of the more cloying qualities – more mature, and nicely tuned through a range of material from Neil Young, Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash, John Barry, Stephen Stills, and even the team of Goffin and King. Titles include "Bang Bang", "Since I Lost You Baby", "The Milk Of The Tree", "Get High On Jesus", "I Am A Child", and "East Virginia". 2CD set also features an insane number of bonus tracks – session tracks and single mixes, with 24 more titles in all – plus very detailed notes on Polly's special story. Ronnie RossStompin' With The Ronnie Ross Quintet ... LP
Ember (UK), Late 50s. Very Good ... $19.99
British reedman Ronnie Ross really shines brightly on this set – a well-crafted batch of tunes that takes a great lead from his strong work on baritone sax! The sound is somewhat tightly arranged – a bit in a US west coast mode from the time – but the groove's also a bit looser at points, and really has some nice edges on the solos. Ross blows baritone and a bit of alto sax, and other players include Bert Courtley on trumpet, Eddie Harvey on piano (and a bit of trombone), Pete Blannin on bass, and Andy White on drums. Titles include the Ross originals "Lucky Bean", "Blue Grass", and "Red Prune" – plus versions of Don Rendell's "Donation" and Tubby Hayes' "The Serpent". LP, Vinyl record album
(Original pressing! Cover has some waviness and staining due to moisture along the bottom.)

✨✧ Annie RossAnnie Ross Sings A Handful Of Songs (plus Gasser/Cranks/bonus tracks) ... CD
Ember/El (UK), 1964. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
An overstuffed package of work from Annie Ross – one that features a few key albums, plus some rare bonus tracks too! First up is A Handful Of Songs – which has Ross recording as a solo act back in England after leaving her famous group with Dave Lambert and John Hendricks! The style here is a bit like some of the solo work that Ross cut in the US at the end of the 50s – particularly her sides for Pacific Jazz – not as vocalese and solo-oriented as the sort of recordings that first got her noticed, but still a lot more dynamic than most straighter jazz singers of the time! Arrangements are pretty groovy overall – nicely jazzy, and penned by Johnnie Spence – also produced by John Barry, who really helps keep the right sort of "punch" in the set. Titles include "Fly Me To The Moon", "Nature Boy", "A Lot Of Livin To Do", "Like Someone In Love", "A Handful Of Songs", and "All Of You". Next is A Gasser – one of Annie Ross' rare albums as a solo act away from her trio with Jon Hendricks and Dave Lambert – and a great little session cut with small combo jazz backing, which gives the song a nice swinging edge! Zoot Sims is the main soloist on the tunes, Russ Freeman lays down piano tracks to set the mood – and other players include Jim Hall, Monte Budwig, Mel Lewis, and Bill Perkins – all of whom contribute wonderfully to the album, and give it a nicely grooving west coast finish. Titles include "I Was Doing Alright", "You Took Advantage Of Me", "Lucky Day", "Lucky So & So", and "Nobody's Baby". 2CD set also features material from the London cast recording of Cranks – which features Ross with Anthony Newley – plus some songs with Lambert, Hendricks, & Ross – and the tune "Let's Fly" by Johnny Mercer & The Pied Pipers, which was written by Ross. ✨✧ Blonde On BlondeReflections Of A Life (with bonus track) ... CD
Ember/Esoteric (UK), 1971. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
That's a really trippy cover on this second album from Blonde On Blonde – and the sound is nicely trippy, too – a bit more complex than on their debut album – with just the right dose of psych elements thrown into the mix of their well-crafted songs! Acoustic guitar actually gets a bit more place in the sound than before, but there's also a balance of more electronic effects, additional percussion, and even some use of banjo and harmonica to give the group a slight roots element they never had before – one that's maybe a bit more in keeping with their Dylan-referenced name, but with a result that's leaning more towards UK acid folk than anything from America. Titles include "Gene Machine", "Sad Song For An Easy Lady", "The Bargain", "The Rut", "Happy Families", and "No 2 Psychological Decontamination Unit". CD features a bonus track – "Sad Song For An Easy Lady (single version)". CD

VariousEccentric Soul – The Nickel & Penny Labels ... CD
Numero, Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... $7.99 18.98
A long-overdue collection – and a rich document of one of our favorite sides of the Chicago soul scene! The package is devoted to the tiny Nickel and Penny labels, but it's also equally a set dedicated to legendary radio DJ Richard Pegue – whose work in both mainstream soul and later dusties formats really helped to shape our understanding of soul music! Pegue produced and wrote nearly every track on the set – which makes the collection one of the most unified the Numero Group has ever produced – a true tribute to Richard's great ear for a groovy soul record, and to all the smaller-name groups he helped support on the Windy City scene. The booklet does a great job of telling Pegue's story – really getting at the unique vision he brought to Chicago soul, and the wit and warmth that made him a favorite of many folks over the space of decades. The music alone is enough – stuff we've been waiting to get reissued for years – but together with the Numero research and booklet, the end result is sublime! Titles include "Just Say The Word" by Jerry Townes, "Fall In Love Again" by The Voices, "Never More" by Little Ben & The Cheers, "Why Do You Want To Make Me Sad" by The Norvells, "Instrumental 1" by Richard Terry & Company, "Shadows" by South Shore Commission, "This Is The Woman" by Sidney Pinchback, "The Ember Song" by Sidney Barnes, "Sign Of The Zodiac" by South Suburban Electric Strings, "This Love Of Mine" by Extensions, "Forever Is A Long Long Time" by The Voices, "Do The Pearl Girl (part 2)" by The Matta Baby, "I've Got To Find A Way" by Hallelujah Chorus, "First Thing I Do In The Morning" by Joyce Williams, and "I'm Gonna Get Even With You" by Little Ben & The Cheers. VariousShe Came From Hungary – 60s Beat Girls From The Eastern Bloc (red vinyl pressing) ... LP
Qualiton/Ace (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... $24.99 28.99
Great girl pop from a really unlikely source – not the better-known British and French female singles that rocked the European scene in the 60s – but a whole host of more obscure numbers from behind the Iron Curtain – all tracks recorded in Hungary, but hardly ever issued to the rest of the world at the time! Turns out, those Hungarians were very much in line with the kinds of sounds that were romping up London, Paris, and Rome at the time – beat-heavy, soul-influenced grooves that bring a new sort of brashness to the female singers in the lead – and give them a kind of universal appeal, even if you can't understand the lyrics at all! At some level, the instrumentation here is more than enough – loads of groovy organ lines, thumping bass, soaring horns, and all sorts of other groovy touches – but the unusual language of the vocals adds a very cool other aspect to the sound. All tracks are from the Qualiton catalog, and presented here with detailed notes and history in English – for titles tha tinclude "Ez Az Utolso Randevunk" by Eva Nagy, "Konyorogni Nem Fogok" by Zsuzsa Matray, "Keresek Egy Fiut" by Maria Wittek, "Mindig Tanul Az Ember" by Beata Karda, "Fekete Beat" by Sarolta Zalatnay, "Ha Csak Egy Fokkal Szebb Az Ordognel" by Gabi Fenyvesi, "Judas Vagy" by Kyri Ambrus, "Keresem A Szot" by Zsuzsa Koncz, and "Zsakutca" by Clementina Magay. Answer To RememberAnswer To Remember ... CD
Sony (Japan), New Copy ... $21.99
A fantastic little record from Shun Ishikawa – a drummer and keyboardist, and a musician who brings a sound to the set that's every bit as vibrant as the image on the cover! The groove is a bit hard to describe in easy words – as sometimes things are freewheeling and frenetic, other times locked in a sharp rhythmic pulse – leaping forward between different modes with the kind of boundless energy that takes us back to earlier work by some of our favorite Japanese groups, like Quasimode or Soil & Pimp Sessions! There's maybe a more open vibe going on here, as the lineup shifts from track to track – making room for guests who include Takuya Kuroda on trumpet, and singers who include Ermhoi, Kid Fresino, Karai, and Jua. Titles include "Tokyo", "Still So What", "Run", "Cicada Shells", "Gna", and "Life For Kiss". CD

George BensonLove Remembers ... CD
Warner/Wounded Bird, 1993. New Copy ... $6.99 11.98
Sweet stepping soul from George Benson – a batch of tracks that wraps up his wonderful vocals and guitar with some great contemporary rhythms! The vibe here is nicely laidback – never too smooth, nor some of the more commercial territory that Benson was trying for a decade before – and in a way, it's almost as if George has been digging some of the less mainstream soul sounds of the time, as he's hitting a sound that would certainly appeal to steppers in Chicago, or the indie soul and smooth jazz scene of the early 90s. Benson's got a great way of scatting lightly with his guitar, and there's a leanness to most of the tracks, despite a relatively full lineup of players. Titles include "I'll Be Good To You", "Got To Be There", "My Heart Is Dancing", "Love Remembers", "Come Into My World", "Somewhere Island", "Calling You", "Lovin On Borrowed Time", and "Love Of My Life". Alternative Fox (UK), 1967. New Copy ... $18.99
Four slices of genius from this important German jazz festival of the 60s – one of the leading showcases for the best in avant garde and experimental music! The sounds here are as stunning as the lineup – maybe even more so, as there's some nicely-unfamiliar, surprisingly collaborative passages going on – all of which really illuminate the studio music by these groundbreaking artists! The set begins with "Andalusian Proverb" – a beautiful showcase for the dynamic vocals of Jeanne Lee, as she sings with Gunter Hampel on vibes, Albert Mangelsdorff on trombone, and Pierre Courbois on drums. "Cubis" features a sublime trio with Marion Brown on alto, Peter Kowald on bass, and John Stevens on drums – and that rhythm duo also supports "Jepa", which features Mangelsdorff on trombone and Evan Parker on soprano sax – and "Relationship", which also features Parker – as well as Don Cherry on trumpet and Buschi Niebergall on second bass. Clarke Boland Big Band with Carmen McCraeNovember Girl ... CD
Rearward (Italy), 1970. New Copy ... $9.99
A rare gem from the Clarke Boland Big Band – and one of the group's few vocal sessions ever! The album's a really unique one – recorded in the UK in 1970, and featuring singer Carmen McCrae joining the group for a fresh and unusual batch of tracks – most of them originals written for the session! The CBBB is in fine fine form throughout – hard-swinging with an impossibly tight sound, and featuring solo work by Tony Coe, Sahib Shihab, and Billy Mitchell. But even more surprising is Carmen – really opening up on the record, thanks to the fresh, new material – and hitting dark moods that perfectly fit the November Girl title of the session! Titles include "Just Give Me Time", "A Handful Of Soul", "Dear Death", "My Kinda World", and "November Girl". CD
(It's hard to tell from the image, but Rearward packaged it all in a really nice case with a glossy silver metalic finish!)

Astrud GilbertoSeptember 17, 1969 ... LP
Verve, 1969. Near Mint- ... $49.99
One of the grooviest records ever from the lovely Astrud Gilberto – a session that beautifully mixes her usual bossa nova with bits of Sunshine Pop and other hip late 60s grooves – all in a mode that really takes off a lot more than other Gilberto albums on Verve! The style here is really wonderful – upbeat, soaring, and joyous on most of the best numbers – a real transformation of Astrud's usual groove, and a great departure from too familiar bossa nova material. The record's been a little bit lost to the shifting sands of time – possibly because it's not as iconic as it might be – but we totally love it, and really consider it one of Gilberto's best moments ever in the studio. Arrangements are by Albert Gorgoni – and titles include a fantastic long jamming version of the track "Beginnings" that sounds completely different from the Chicago hit, and which is a stunning dancefloor groover! The album also includes an English version of "Canto De Osshana" called "Let's Go", plus a groovy uptempo version of the Bee Gee's "Holiday", and the great cut "Love Is Stronger Than We" from the soundtrack to A Man & A Woman. Other tracks include "Think Of Rain", "A Million Miles Away Behind The Door", "Don't Leave Me Baby", and "Summer Sweet (part 1, part 2 to be continued)". LP, Vinyl record album

A pair of albums that have European jazz great Stephane Grapelli revising the format of his legendary Hot Club Of France with guitarist Django Reinhardt – but in a very different mode, given that this group features electric guitar from Barney Kessel! Kessel is great, and his warm, round tones do very little to change things up from his usual groove – but the setting is definitely a fresh one for Barney, given that the combo features rhythm guitar from Nini Rosso, and sweetly-crafted violin lines from Grappelli! The rest of the group features Michel Gaudry on bass and Jean-Louis Viale on drums – and titles include "Tea For Two", "Out Of Nowhere", "Limehouse Blues", "I Remember Django", "What A Difference A Day Made", "More Than You Know", "Et Maintenant", "It's Only A Paper Moon", and "Little Star". Nobuo Hara with Sharps & FlatsSoul Modern Jazz 3 – Members ... CD
Columbia/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1960. New Copy ... $14.99
Hard driving jazz from the Japanese scene of the 50s! The album's one of the best recorded by Nobu Hara and the legendary Sharpes & Flats group – a really swinging set of big band jazz that drives with the power of some of the 60s recordings by the Clarke-Boland Big Band, and which offers plenty of space for the soloists to swing out during the set with really dynamic energy – especially as the saxes and trumpets break from the group to start their own sort of presence in the music! Unfortunately, all the notes are in Japanese – so we can't tell you the exact lineup or the song titles – but the album's a strong one, and a perfect example of the strength of the Japanese scene in the postwar years! A wonderful set from vocalist Jon Hendricks – and quite different than most of his other work! This set was one of a few that Jon recorded while living in the UK at the end of the 60s – and it features orchestrations by Wally Stott, and production by Johnny Franz – the team who both made the Scott Walker records of the late 60s so great! The style here is a bit more subdued than that on the Scott Walker albums – warm and lush, in a mode that has Hendricks singing as a traditional vocalist, in a mellow late nite style. The album features a few original tunes – "Times Of Love", "Where", and "One Rose" – plus great versions of "I Concentrate On You", "Lil Darlin", and "Nature Boy". Oddly dark, with some nice touches – and a whole new side of Hendricks' vocals! LP, Vinyl record album

One of the only 70s sessions cut as a leader by pianist Art Matthews – and sweet little set that's overflowing with soul! The tracks are long and freely flowing – somewhat righteous, but never too far out – and mostly in a style that's inspired by McCoy Tyner, but which also features some of the groovier elements of Ronnie Matthews (any relation?) Art's group here is all wonderful – with Dizzy Reece on trumpet, both Archie Shepp and Bill Pierce on tenor, Charles Farmbrough on bass, and Alan Dawson on drums – all working together in formation that's somewhat tight, but in ways that are completely different from mainstream bigger label jazz at the time. The set's got a very open, fluid feel – yet never gets free at all – and titles include "Samba Ebony", "5/4 Thing", "Love Dreams", "I'll Remember April", and "It's Easy To Remember". CD

A really fantastic album from bassist Joshua Abrams – a set that may well be his greatest to date – and that's saying a lot, given all the other work he's given us in recent years! The double-length set has Abrams working with this lineup of improvising jazz talents, but in a way that's very rhythmic, and very organic – slow-building songs that almost seem to mix jazz with inspiration from gamelan music, but with very spiritual currents overall – music that builds slowly and flows to the cosmos – almost in a way that reminds us of the seminal "On The Beach" by Phil Cohran & The Artistic Heritage Ensemble! Yet Abrams is very much in his own territory here – working with a lineup that features the leader on guimbri, Lisa Alvarado on harmonium and gongs, Mikel Avery on tam-tam and gongs, Ben Boye on electric autoharp and piano, Hamid Drake on tabla and tar, Ben Lamar Gay on cornet, Nick Mazzarella on alto saxophone, and Jason Stein on bass clarinet – with every member of the ensemble also performing on flutes. The sound is incredible – music to build a bridge to the heavens – and titles include "In Memory's Prism", "Finite", "Shadow Conductor", and "Agree". CD

You might remember Tony Aiken for his classic funk album Unity, from the 70s – and here, he's back again – after nearly 40 years away from the studio! The album's got a style that's a lot more reggae-influenced than before – maybe not totally a reggae record, given the other influences that Tony brings to bear – but a style that's definitely Jamaican overall, especially in the rhythms! The project features a big number of guests – as you can probably guess from the images on the front cover – all given a soulful spirit by Tony's lead. Package lists no song titles at all – but there are 10 tracks total. CD

Laurel Aitken & OthersSkinhead Train – Complete Singles Collection 1969/1970 (5CD set) ... CD
Pressure Drop (UK), Late 60s. New Copy 5CD set ... $32.99
An insanely huge amount of work from British rocksteady legend Laurel Aitken – especially when you consider that this set of 138 tracks was issued in the short space of just two years! In truth, Laurel's not the lead artist on all the cuts, but he had something to do with all of them – either as a singer, songwriter, producer, or other creative force – all bringing to a variety of UK labels the experience he'd build up as a formative member on the growing scene in Kingston! The work throughout is marked with the wit that always made Aitken such a standout, and which also links his contributions to Jamaican music with larger Caribbean culture – but never in the watered-down style of his later revival work. The scope of music is amazing, and in addition to dozens of tracks recorded under his own name, the package features cuts by The Gruvy Beats, The Classics, Inner Mind, Winston Groovy, Sonny Binns & The Rudies, Tiger, King Horror, Pama Dice, The Cimarons, Trevor Lloyd, Dice & Cummie, Dice The Boss, and others. RCA (Japan), 1975. New Copy ... $18.99
A 70s classic from the team of Toshiko Akioshi and Lew Tabackin – a duo who did for the jazz ensemble mode in their generation what Kenny Clarke and Francy Boland did in the 60s! The material here is wonderfully inventive – the kind of compositions that Toshiko wouldn't have even written in her smaller combo years – fleshed out here by a fantastic group that includes Lew Tabackin and Gary Foster on reeds, and Bobby Shew and Don Rader on trumpets – all in a setting where the voices of the individual members really get a lot of space to shine! Titles include "Since Perry", "Opus No Zero", "Long Yellow Road", "First Night", "Children In The Temple Ground", and "Yet Another Tear". CD

Joe AlbanyEvening With Joe Albany ... CD
Steeplechase (Denmark), 1973. Used ... $11.99
A lost treasure from the great Joe Albany – a well-recorded solo performance from the 70s, and one that really gets at the increasing complexity of Albany's music in his later years! Joe's maybe best-remembered for his contributions to bop, but he's also a player with a sound that really bridges generations of jazz – one that's able to encompass older modes of expression, but always give them some sharper modern edges – in ways that are sometimes subtle, but always completely sublime! This set has Joe working with amazing dexterity over a host of standards – some long, some short, a few in medleys – with this insane command of the keyboard that keeps on pulling out notes that are surprising, yet surprisingly right in the progression that Albany creates – represented here in a setting that gives the legend the same kind of intimate, solo focus that you might have heard on the best Art Tatum recordings. Titles include "Our Love Is Here To Stay", "If You Could See Me Now", "All The Things You Are", "As Time Goes By", "More Than You Know", and "Who Can I Turn To". CD

Dee AlexanderWild Is The Wind ... CD
Blujazz, 2008. New Copy ... $11.99 15.99
Amazing work from singer Dee Alexander – a wonderfully soulful album of jazz vocals, and one that we'd rank right up there with our favorite records by Carmen Lundy or Dee Dee Bridgewater! Dee's a singer who's worked in Chicago for years, but we've honestly only begun to appreciate her talents of late – possibly because she's really hipped up her sound a lot over the years, picking up a range of spiritual, soulful influences that push her music to a whole new level – as you might have heard on her recent collaboration with IG Culture. The music on the set is wonderful too – work by Chicago players we know, but have never heard this strongly before – grooving in modal and soulful modes behind Dee's great vocals, with a lineup that includes Miguel De La Cerna and Michael Logan on piano, Harrison Bankhead on bass, and Leon Joyce on drums and percussion. Titles include versions of two tunes by AACM member Henry Huff – "Live" and "You & I" – plus the Alexander originals "Long Road Ahead", "Rossingnol", "Butterfly", and "C U On The Other Side". CD

Eric AlexanderLeap Of Faith ... CD
Giant Step Arts, 2019. New Copy ... $19.99 20.00
The great Eric Alexander in a trio mode – soaring out with a lot more space and soul than some of his albums with a pianist – and that's saying a lot, given the wonderfully soulful sound of that work too! The style is a mode that Alexander has explored a bit over the years, but which really comes out with great force here – and opens up a sharper, more biting tone than you might be used to hearing from the saxophonist over his 25+ years of recording! It's almost as if Eric's awoken with a whole new sense of spirit – and we mean that quite literally, as the album has Alexander arising as a very powerful saxophonist in a spiritual tradition – with a sound that's still very individual, but which has links to a legacy that includes Pharoah Sanders and Charles Lloyd – something we never would have said about Eric just a few years ago. The other trio members are key to the sound, too – Doug Weiss on bass and Jonathan Blake on drums – and titles include "Corazon Perdido", "Luquitas", "Mars", "Magyar", "Big Richard", "Second Impression", and "Frenzy". Harold AlexanderRaw Root ... CD
Atlantic/Wounded Bird, 1974. New Copy ... $3.99 11.98
A blend of jazz funk and rawer informed grooves from Harold Alexander – and actually a step into more polished vibes thanks to some Arif Mardin arrangements and a new home at Atlantic Records! Although some of the earlier records cut by reed player Harold Alexander may have been more accurately described with the title Raw Root, this one stands up a lot better today than we remembered it! It has a pretty tight electric sound, and good Atlantic soul grooves running through it – with Alexander on flutes & saxes, Joe Boner in on keyboards, Ricard Davis on bass and Brian Beaks on drums on the bulk of it, with altered personnel on "De Black Musician" and "Lady Euphoria" (which also include vocals by Tequila). Soulful backing vocals credited to Something Different and some guitar by Junior Hanson and some spacey synth by Billy Allessi. Other tracks include "Country Soul", "Raw Root", "New York Sister", and "Street Life". CD

Rashied Ali & Frank LoweDuo Exchange – Complete Sessions ... LP
Survival, Early 70s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... $39.99 46.99
A great one from drummer Rashied Ali – issued here on his own Survival label! Ali's perhaps best remembered for his spare backing behind Coltrane's solo sax on the record Interstellar Space – and we're tempted to say that there's a similar vibe going on here – as the record just features Ali on drums and percussion, and the great Frank Lowe on tenor, plus Japanese flute and a bit of percussion too. The approach is nice and open, in a loft jazz mode – and Frank blows with a rough-hewn emotion that brings a lot to the session, and which provides a good grounding for Ali's sometimes loose work on drums! The original album features one long improvisation – "Duo Exchange" – but it's expanded here by more than a full album's worth of bonus material, really great recordings that appear here for the first time ever, pressed up beautifully. Alice Island BandSplendid Isolation ... LP
Warren/Wah Wah (Spain), 1974. New Copy (reissue)... $29.99
One of the more obscure outings from the British underground folk scene at the start of the 70s – a set that's way way different than contemporary work on the bigger labels, and which sounds as if it was conceived and recorded a fair bit away from the mainstream! The instrumentation is a mix of electric and acoustic guitar, electric bass, piano, and harmonium – with vocals by all three members of the trio, but in ways that are only partly harmonious – as some of the moments are more sung or spoken at cross-purposes – maybe with the energy of some of the madder parts of the Giles Giles & Fripp record, but more acoustic overall. Tunes were all penned by Roger Moore, who produced but doesn't play on the record – and titles include "Devil's Island", "Nickel Man", "Package Tour Mona Lisa", "Smoke", "Goodbye Cindy", and "The Man That I Am". The title definitely lives up to the sound of the record – a really loose, free session from a quartet that includes strong work from both trumpeter Peter Evans and tenorist Rodrigo Amado – the latter of whom leads the group! All tracks are long, and build with a nice degree of energy – one that gets back to the "freedom principle" generation between the ESP and loft jazz years – when spontaneous creativity like this was really in action. All four members contribute equally to shape the sound of the performance – and the group also features Miguel Mira on cello and Garbirel Ferrandini on drums. Ars NovaFields Of People – The Elektra & Atlantic Recordings 1968/1969 (Ars Nova/Sunshine & Shadows) ... CD
Esoteric (UK), Late 60s. New Copy 2CD ... $16.99
A pair of great albums from the overlooked Ars Nova – back to back in a single set! First up is the 1968 self-titled Ars Nova – a wonderful little set of post-folk rock – with lots of lovely baroque touches! Ars Nova were really short-lived group – known for only two rare records – but they've got a sound that perfectly sums up a generation! There's a wonderful LA late 60s sound here – somewhere between Love and The Byrds, with the baroque touches of the former and the best country influences of the latter – all wrapped up in earnest, honest songwriting that makes even the ambitious moments come across with surprising charm. A true lost relic, and the kind of record that should be in any late 60s cannon! Titles include "Album In Your Mind", "Pavan For My Lady", "General Clover Ends A War", "And How Am I To Know", "Fields Of People", "Automatic Love", and "Song To The City". Sunshine & Shadows is the second tripped-out set from Ars Nova – an under-remembered late 60s group who had a great talent for blending together a range of different styles! At some level, Ars Nova share qualities with some of the harder-jamming groups of their time – but they've also got a sound that expands to bring in folk, blues, jazz, and more baroque elements – played by the group with a lineup that includes some nice work on trumpet by Jimmy Owens, who at this point was a core member of the combo. Brooks Arthur handled the overall music direction, with a quality that recalls some of his work on Verve – and the album features the wonderful bossa-styled groover "Walk On The Sand", a romping soul jazz take on Jimmy Owens' "You Had Better Listen", and the cuts "Rubbish", "Please Don't Go Now", "Temporary Serenade", "She Promises Everything", and "Round Once Again". Art Ensemble Of ChicagoPhase One (Prestige pressing) ... LP
Prestige, 1971/1973. Near Mint- ... Just Sold Out!
One of the headiest albums ever recorded by the Art Ensemble of Chicago – a brilliant mix of noise and silence that rivals some of the greatest genius of the 20th century avant composition! The album's lead track "Ohnedaruth" builds slowly with a variety of percussion – traveling in People In Sorrow territory that shows a remarkable sense of sound and space. All members of the group pick up some percussion to build the track as it goes along – then follow suit with a more reed-based approach on the other extended tune on the album, "Lebert Aaly" – the group's brilliant tribute to the late Albert Ayler! The sound is incredibly deep and textured – and draws a clear line between creative improvisation and technical composition that puts the group alongside Cage and Hindemuth! LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Art Ensemble Of ChicagoThird Decade ... CD
ECM (Germany), 1985. Used ... Just Sold Out!
A surprisingly great little album – recorded on the occasion of the Ensemble's third decade in music, and a record that sounds a lot better than we remember! At the time of release, we kind of "pooh poohed" this one because of its divergence from some of the group's other styles – some tracks are straighter, more composed, and less improvised; others use a larger sound palette, and go for themes that are almost sentimental and nostalgic at times. Yet somehow, going back to this one, we're stunned at how interesting we find the whole thing – as each track seems to offer up a new surprise, and the series of musical visions expressed shows how much the group had grown during their time together. Includes the wonderful "Prayer For Jimbo Kwesi", the percussive jammer "Third Decade", the sonorously-wonderful "Bell Piece", and the tracks "Walking In The Moonlight", "Zero", and "Funky AECO". CD

A tremendous tribute to the legendary Art Ensemble Of Chicago – a group who work here with only two of their surviving members, but with help from a constellation of jazz musicians inspired by their music! The group here is large, and includes AACM members and other younger talents – a fantastic lineup that mixes the core work of Famadou Don Moye on drums and percussion, and Roscoe Mitchell on reeds with work from Nicole Mitchell on flutes, Hugh Ragin and Fred Berry on trumpets, Tomeka Reid on cello, Jaribu Shahid and Junius Paul on basses, Enoch Williams and Titos Sompa on percussion, and Christina Wheeler on voice and a range of unusual electronic instruments! There's a very ambitious feel to the music – like some of Roscoe Mitchell's larger form creations, but with more of a spiritual jazz current that comes from the whole ensemble – and from vocal contributions from Moore Mother and Rodolfo Cordova Lebron. The double-length set features a studio album and a live album by the expanded group – and titles include "Bell Song", "We Are On The Edge", "Chi Congo 50", "Fanfare & Bell", "Odwalla/The Theme", "Tutankhamun", "Mama Koko", "Saturday Morning", and "Villa Tiamo". One of the coolest club records ever cut – and one with a great gimmick too! That gimmick is the "hotel sheet" – an instrument created by percussionist Jack Ashford, which is a light piece of metal that's snapped back and worth to create these cool wibbly, wobbly waves of sound – almost like a moog at times, which gives some of these tracks a bit of a P&P Records vibe! Ashford was a member of The Funk Brothers – and a percussionist on countless classic Motown sessions – but this album was recorded in LA with a sweet electric groove, and a mix of strings and funk that almost rivals Jack's only other full album – a rare blacksploitation soundtrack. The set features full arrangements from Paul Riser, orchestrations from Gordon Staples, and the whole thing was recorded at the Marvin Gaye studios – which you can almost hear in Ashford's surprisingly great vocals. One of Roy Ayers' best-remembered albums of the 70s – a sublime blend of mellow numbers and some of his more club-oriented grooves of the time – all wrapped together with a genius that we can only describe as Ayers-like! The album's a beautiful example of the balance that Roy was striking in his work at the time – because alongside some of the more upbeat, catchy numbers, there's other tracks that are a fair bit more laidback, and almost abstract at times – a wonderful extrapolation of that sensitive Ayers blend of jazz and soul, with key emphasis on the vibes and keyboards. Titles include the massive groover "Running Away" – which you'll recognize from a key sample history over the years – and club cuts "Cincinnati Growl", "Fruit", "Sanctified Feeling", and "Stranded In The Jungle" – plus the more laidback cuts "Gotta Find A Lover", "I Still Love You", "Lifeline", and "This Side Of Sunshine". Amazing early work from Azymuth – rare demo recordings done at the home studio of keyboardist Jose Roberto Bertrami, in the short space before the group issued their legendary debut! The tracks here are as much jazz funk as they are the later modes that Azymuth would put forth – killer instrumentals that are really driven by great keyboard lines from Bertrami, who'd already been making music in other formats for years – and who works here on Fender Rhodes, Arp, Clavinet, Hammond, and a range of other keyboards too! The drums are fantastic, too – handled by a young Ivan Conti, who gets help on percussion from an early fourth member of the group, Ariovaldo Contesini – and as you might guess, the incredible basslines of Ivan Mamao Conti really help the whole thing groove. All material is very well-recorded – these aren't rough or unfinished tracks at all – and the whole thing should just be thought of as a first chapter for the group, right before they started putting out their famous records. A hell of a group – one that features four players who are every bit as much sonic experimentalists as they are musicians – coming together here in a perfect setting to allow free interplay between their tones! Each member seems to contribute equally – and there's a warmly collaborative vibe that seems to occur every time that Joelle Leandre is part of a performance – maybe just because of the careful way she contributes her work on bass, but also (we're guessing) that the lady herself can make everyone else feel at home and bring their best work. Bill BarronModern Windows Suite ... CD
Savoy, 1961. Used ... $11.99
Some of the greatest modern jazz ever recorded! Tenorist Bill Barron is like no other – and although he's softened a bit in recent years, during the early 60s he was working with trumpeter Ted Curson to forge a bold new sound that was different from much of what was happening at the time. Barron and Curson had a sharply-tuned approach to jazz, free in their solos, but with the same kind of frenetic scoring as Charles Mingus – who's probably their most sympathetic relation musically, and who also employed each of them at various points in their career. In a way, Barron and Curson take off from the energy of Mingus dynamic 1957 sessions, an energy that was flagging in his own work at the time – but which was taken to the next level on these Savoy sides from 1961. The playing is razor-sharp, very angular – but never without soul and never too academic to swing. It's also equally committed to reigning in freedom at just the right points – allowing bright flourishes of dynamic playing from a member of the group, yet never too much to dominate the overall energy of the ensemble. The set's got 11 tracks in all – 4 from Barron's Modern Windows Suite LP, and 7 more from The Tenor Stylings of Bill Barron. Titles include "Blast Off", "Ode To An Earth Girl", "Oriental Impressions", "Fox Hunt", and "Men At Work". CD

Beau BrummelsTriangle (colored vinyl pressing – mono) ... LP
Warner/Rhino, 1967. New Copy (reissue)... $15.99 21.98
A tremendous album from The Beau Brummels – one of the lesser-remembered groups from the late 60s Warner hipster heyday! At some level, the group's a folk-rock outfit – with the left-of-center feel of some of Fred Neil's best work for Capitol, and a similar blend of east coast honesty and west coast mind expansion. The format here is remarkably simple, but handled with some nice touches by producer Lenny Waronker, who really brings a lot more out of the band than on their earlier indie recordings. Titles include "Are You Happy", "The Wolf Of Velvet Fortune", "The Keeper Of Time", "Only Dreaming Now", "Magic Hollow", "Painter Of Women", and "Triangle". LP, Vinyl record album

Beau BrummelsTriangle/Bradley's Barn ... CD
Warner/Real Gone, 1967/1968. New Copy ... On July 31, 2020
Genius work from The Beau Brummels – two albums that no fan of underground 60s rock should be without! First up is Triangle – a tremendous album from The Beau Brummels – one of the lesser-remembered groups from the late 60s Warner hipster heyday! Bradley's Barn is a crucial album in the sound of late 60s Warner – recorded by west coasters The Beau Brummels in the heart of Tennessee, at the legendary studios of country producer Owen Bradley! This meeting of west and country is fantastic – a really incredible extension of earlier folksy rock styles forged by Dylan, Fred Neil, Tim Buckley, and others – handled with incredible care, and a style that's equally honest and ironic – but coming together with a sound that's unlike anything else we can think of – one of those rare few albums that somehow draws from a wealth of inspiration, but manages to make something completely standout in the process – almost a Feelies/Good Earth for its own generation! Tremendous stuff – and titles include "Jessica", "Bless You California", "I'm A Sleeper", "Little Bird", "Turn Around", and "An Added Attraction". CD

Andy BeyBallads Blues & Bey ... LP
Evidence/Koko (UK), 1995. New Copy ... About February 20, 2020 (delayed)
Warm and wonderful late work from the great Andy Bey – former member of Andy & The Bey Sisters, and a singer who will forever be in our heart for his hip 70s recordings with Horace Silver and Gary Bartz! This one has Bey running through a host of straighter jazz tracks – mostly Ellington numbers and standards, done in a warm intimate style that's quite a departure from his 70s work, more in the mode of his spiritual vocals of the 60s. Tracks are all done in longer versions than usual, which really lets Bey open up – and titles include "Yesterdays", "Someone To Watch Over Me", "Day Dream", "If You Could See Me Now", "Willow Weep For Me", "In A Sentimental Mood", and "You'd Be So Nice To Come Home To". BGM (Takayuki Shiraishi)Back Ground Music ... LP
Studio Mule (Germany), 1980. New Copy ... $31.99
A set that's hardly background at all – as the tracks here have a lively, forward sort of energy that reminds us of our favorite post-punk experiments from the British and German scenes at the start of the 70s – done with a darkness that really resonates with the album's cover image too! There's hardly any vocals at all on the songs – other than muted, abstracted lyrics that are buried under brooding basslines, echoey drums, and fuzzy work on guitar and keyboards – all with a moody Factory Records sort of vibe – and by that, we mean Factory circa 1980, not the later sunnier years. Titles include "Neo Dancer", "And", "Repeat", "Membership Card", "Romantic Romance", and "Recovery Room". LP, Vinyl record album

Jeb Bishop Trio/QuartetAfternoons ... CD
Okka Disk, 2001. New Copy ... $9.99 13.99
One of the boldest statements on record from trombonist Jeb Bishop – and a really great reminder of his key contributions to the Chicago avant scene at the start of the century! Jeb's a master of subtle shape and sound on his instrument, but he can also play with a fiercer frenzy – which is definitely the case here, and he moves between a trio and quartet lineup – alongside Kent Kessler on bass, Tim Mulvenna on drums, and Jeff Parker on guitar! The match of Parker and Bishop happens on four of the album's seven tracks, and has an especially strong resonance – tuneful at times, fuzzier at others – although the trio tracks are pretty darn incredible, and have us really remembering the greatness of Kessler and Mulvenna too. Titles include "Mirror Image", "The Umbrella", "Piggly Wiggly", "Pond", and "Flex Time". CD

Black HeatKeep On Runnin' ... LP
Atlantic, 1975. Very Good ... $13.99
The third album from Black Heat – and quite possibly the funkiest of the bunch – thanks to an even tighter sound than before, and lots of emphasis on the bottom of the groove! The group's got a few more members than before, but their sound is somehow even leaner – a really tight approach to ensemble funk that really sits proudly with the best of the Kool & The Gang/Fatback generation – with some sweet Afro-inspired touches as well! The organ on the set is especially nice – played by Johnell Grey, and bubbling up nicely underneath the horns – and the drums from Esco Cromer have a wicked kick too, even on some of the album's mellower cuts. Titles include the killer break cut "Zimba Ku", plus "Questions & Conclusions", "Love", "Prince Duval", "Feel Like A Child", "Keep On Runnin", and a nice funky version of "Drive My Car". ✨✧ Black IceBlack Ice ... CD
HDM, Late 70s. New Copy ... $6.99 15.98
A heavy groover from Black Ice – an old school harmony act at the core, but working here in a sweet clubby mode for the 70s! The approach is quite similar to the best group soul coming from Philly at the time – with some wicked upbeat numbers that step along beautifully – not Sigma-bred, but with a similar blend of tight rhythms on the bottom, soaring strings on the top, and funky instrumentation in the middle – more than enough to really get the vocal interplay going between the group's five members! Arrangements are by Ray Jackson – and the set also features a few nice mellower numbers to round out the sound – including the great stepper "The Wine Is Bitter (But The Grapes Are Sweet)" – alongside other tracks that include "Shakedown", "Blind Over You", "Touch", "Girl That's What I Call Love", "I Want You Back", and "Making Love In The Rain". US Army/Now Again, 1972. Used Gatefold ... $4.99
A pretty darn cool little record – even if it is a bunch of cover versions! As the title proclaims, the set presents the winners of a US Army competition for its members stationed in Europe in the early 70s – one that chose The Black Seeds for side one of the album, and Sound Trek for side two! The Black Seeds are a sweet harmony group with a really heartbreaking feel – very much in the New Jersey/Philly mode, and sounding great on a number of roughly-done covers that include "Go Outside In The Rain", "Black Magic Woman", "Do Your Thing", "Backstabbers", and "Ain't No Sunshine". The Sound Trek are a bit more groove-oriented – kicking off their set with an instrumental reading of "Kool & The Gang", but then rolling into a batch of vocal soul covers that include "Walking In The Rain", ", "Coldest Days Of My Life", "I Love Everything About You" and more. Concord (Japan), 1982. Used ... $24.99
Long, lean live energy from Art Blakey and a well-remembered version of The Jazz Messengers – a group that includes both Branford Marsalis on alto and Wynton Marsalis on trumpet – plus great tenor from Bill Pierce as well! The vibe is nicely different than the 60s years of the group – and even different than some of the late 70s incarnations too – and the longer, open performances really give all the players a great chance to show off their youthful energy – including Donald Brown on piano and Charles Fambrough on bass. The whole lineup is proof once again that just about anyone Blakey picks turns out to be a legend in their own right – and titles include "Fuller Love", "In Walked Bud", "Waterfalls", and "A La Mode". ECM (Germany), 2020. New Copy ... $16.99 18.99
Beautiful sounds from pianist Carla Bley – a musician who just keeps on blowing us away as the decades move on – and that's saying a hell of a lot, given how many years she's been making music! There's a really special quality to this record – a warmth and maybe just a slight touch of humor, but not in the overdone way of some of Carla's records from the 80s – much more subtle, and mixed with occasional currents of darkness – all handled with this understated sense of personality that perfectly showcases all three members of the group – Bley on piano, Steve Swallow on bass, and Andy Sheppard on tenor and soprano saxes. Swallow maybe sounds more wonderful here than we've heard in years – the record is a great reminder of how many great contributions he can make to music – and titles include the longer cycles of songs "Life Goes On", "Copycat", and "Beautiful Telephones (parts 1 to 3)". Booker T & The MGsMcLemore Avenue (180 gram pressing) (2020 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Stax, 1969. New Copy (reissue)... On August 29, 2020
The Beatles had Abbey Road – and Booker T & The MGs had McLemore Ave, the main street running outside the Stax studios, and a fitting title for the album that has them playing tunes from The Beatles' incredible Abbey Road album. If you've ever thought that Abbey Road was a soft-rock lowpoint in the Beatles' career, consider how many soul and jazz artists either covered the whole album, performed songs from it, or referenced it in their album covers. This little gem is proof that the compositions already had a life of their own within a short time of the release of the record – as Book and crew take the Beatles' tunes to whole new heights, working them together into a complicated batch of grooves that really pushes past their earlier work on Stax. Who knows, perhaps The Beatles were just the kick that Book needed – we can't ever tell the whole story, but we can say that the record marks a strong turning point for the group, and is well worth having for a variety of reasons. Titles include "The End", "You Never Give Me Your Money", "Because", "I Want You/She's So Heavy", and "Polythene Pam". What a weird, defiantly appealing moment in pop music it was when Malcolm McClaren assembled members of The Ants and 15-year-old Annabella Lwin – who then paired bratty lyrics with African-inspired drums & rhythms.
