Classic work from Slim Harpo – an album that kicks off with one of his biggest hits ever, and follows with plenty of great tunes as well! Things here are pretty rootsy and stripped-down – lots of spare, slowish rhythms (but a few funkier ones too!) – and instrumentation that's dominated by guitar and harmonica alongside Slim's vocals – all in a mode that's maybe a bit more vintage than his funky soul of the late 60s, but still equally powerful too! A real classic from Japanese guitarist Ryo Kawasaki – a sweet batch of Japanese fusion tracks, with lots of nice work on guitar, keyboards, and reeds! Like a lot of Ryo's other albums from the time, the record blends together jazzy riffing with some smoother R&B touches – but still manages to keep things nice and hard overall, especially on the best tracks – a vibe that's more CTI than some of the later Japanese fusion of the 70s! The lineup includes Sam Morrison on tenor and soprano sax, Andy Laverne on piano and keyboards, and Phil Clendininn on a bit of extra Arp – and titles include the great slow funk number "On The Dot", plus "Montevideo", "Good Night John", and "El Diablo". Caribbean styles hit the American scene – then get transformed into something completely different in this huge collection of recordings that span styles that include jazz, Latin, R&B, soul, and blues! In some cases, the Caribbean element comes through in the song structure – which might be lifted directly, then reworked for an American audience. But at other times, the influence is more in the rhythms or instrumentation – used as inspiration to then create something new – a bit in the way that American soul would provide the inspiration for reggae in the 60s. Joseph Malik really knocks us out with this one – and takes off with a sound that's well deserving of the "directions in music" tag in the title! At its core, the record has a similar feel to the spacey soul of Joseph's first set for Compost – lots of warm songwriting with slight folksy touches – in a Terry Callier-inspired mode that stakes out new space for the 21st century. But the sound here is also quite different – supported by arrangements and production by David Donnelly – who provides just the right blend of modes to push Malik's music boldly forward – using light keys, snapping rhythms, and a really rich tapestry of sound to fill up the spaces, and give the album a really majestic sound! The set's one of the strongest full albums we've heard from Compost in a while – and it's likely to keep Malik at the top of our play pile for a long time to come! A massive overview of the early years of the career of trumpeter Shorty Rogers – a 2CD set that brings together performances by Shorty in other groups (Woody Herman, Red Norvo, Stan Kenton, Lighthouse All Stars), plus some of Rogers' seminal early 50s sides as a leader! The package is a great way to look at Shorty in these "bubbling under" years – the time when he was making bold strides as a soloist in other artists' groups, then first forging the Giants sound that became one of the most popular in 50s jazz. An excellent collection of rare early work by Teo Macero – father of modern jazz to some, thanks to his production work for Columbia Records during the glory days of Miles and Mingus! Macero's a heck of a talent on his own – and this album is one of the few to capture his brilliance. It combines tracks from an early Debut Records ep, plus other sessions from 1957 – and players include Phil Woods, Art Farmer, Lee Konitz, Pat Rebillot, Charles Mingus, and John LaPorta. The mode is 50s modern – not too out, but taking a lot of chances – and titles include "Blues For Amy", "Un Poco Diablo", "Teo", "I'll Remember April", "Explorations", "How Low The Earth", and "Love/Match Point". Tight funky grooves from the jamband underground – one of the strongest albums of this type to come out in years! Stanton Moore's at the head of a small all-star combo that includes Skerik and Karl Denson on sax, Brian Seeger on guitar, and Chris Wood on bass – and Stanton's work on drums is excellent, dancing around the kit with a fantastic flourish, jamming the groove in just the right way to bring out the freest funkiest work in the two-sax frontline. The rhythms are a mix of Bay Area funk, New Orleans soul, and a bit of classic soul jazz – and the production of the set is excellent, nicely stripped down and spare, despite the major label status of the record, which often means a bit too much muddling around in the mix! An ear-opening collection of work from the Peruvian scene of the late 60s – kind of a secret hotbed of Latin grooves, at least to our American ears – and one that was overflowing with some of the best elements of the small combo scene at the time! These guys clearly take a lot of inspiration from the groundbreaking material of the Joe Cuba Sextet, but they also move the music in lots of other directions too – sometimes with a bit of cumbia in the rhythms, other times more of a descarga mode, and almost always with a lot of jazz instrumentation over the top. There's plenty of the soulful elements you'd expect from the boogaloo reference in the title, but there's also lots more too – served up in a set of 28 gems from the Mag label, with titles that include "Kintos Instrumental" by Los Kintos, "Saludo Maracaibo" by Pedro Miguel Y Sus Maracaibos, "Cumbayea" by Mario Allison Y Su Combo, "La Guarachera" by Nico Estrada Y Su Sonora, "Malambo" by Los Diablos Rojos, "La Charanga Del Espacio" by Carlos Pickling Y Orquesta, and "Busco Una Chiquita" by Coco Lagos Y Sus Orates. A rare slice of work from trumpeter Don Cherry – music that's every bit as forward-thinking as his three classic 60s albums on Blue Note! The session is a live one, but the sound is quite strong – recorded up-close, and with great focus on Cherry's incredible horn work – as well as the efforts of the rest of the group, which includes Gato Barbieri on tenor, Karl Berger on vibes, Bo Stief on bass, and Aldo Romano on drums. There's a definite "new thing" vibe going on here – a style that's similar to some of Archie Shepp's work of the period, or that of some of Cherry's Blue Note contemporaries. Tracks are all long, and titles include "Complete Communion", "Dos E Diablo", "Cocktail Piece", and "Rememberance". CD

Spare, minimal sounds served up on a contemporary recording – but one that's inspired by early Midi references from the 80s – which are used here to set the pacing, but warmed up a lot more than they might have sounded back in the day! The music has a rhythmic, almost organic pulse – as if Terry Riley were composing on a Commodore 64, yet already was able to unlock all these tones and elements that none of the 80s musicians handling the instrument were able to touch – informed more by the sounds of acoustic instruments and their possibilities, then woven through digital progressions – all with a sound that's a bit like some of the Sky Records material by Cluster and Eno too. At last! Someone's finally put out a good collection of the heavenly Detroit soul doo wops by Nolan Strong and his group The Diablos. This first volume of 25 tracks kicks off with their classic "The Wind", a heavenly ballad track that was covered by everyone, and then it leaps into a great set that includes "Beside You", "I Wanna Know", "Mind Over Matter", "Ooh Ooh Those Eyes", and loads of other impossible to find tracks from the rare Fortune label. Includes a nice book with loads of notes on the group. CD
