One of the more openly-grooving albums we've heard from Japanese reedman EijiKitamura in the 70s – a live performance that has the players working in this relaxed, small combo version of swing! Kitamura plays clarinet, and the group features some especially great tenor from Satoru Oda – who really shines on a long solo during the album's leadoff version of "Lester Leaps In"! Vocalist Martha Miyake sings a bit on the record – adding in a nice late nite vibe to tunes like "My Ideal" and "It's A Sin To Tell A Lie" – before stepping back to make room for players Muneyoshi Nishiyo on trumpet, Kazuo Yashiro on piano, and Ichiro Masuda on vibes. LP, Vinyl record album
A huge 3LP set, featuring 70s recordings of classic Japanese jazz artists – including George Kawagachi, Nobuo Hara, EijiKitamura, Shin Watanabe, and Shoji Suzuki! LP, Vinyl record album
(Comes with a hefty booklet of notes too! Cover has some light wear around the edges, but is nice overall.)
A jazz message from late 50s Tokyo – loud, proud, and proof that the Japanese scene was really coming into its own! The set's awash in great bop and swing performances from the postwar years – exclusive tracks to this set, played by four different groups that include Akira Miyazawa on tenor, Shungo Sawada on guitar, and EijiKitamura on clarinet – all players that work with other key jazzmen of the Tokyo scene at the time, on sharp-edged tracks that include "An Instant Of The Life", "Funny Bone", "Wherever I Go", "Hello Mr Basie", "Flashing", and "Jog". Poll winners from the Japanese scene of the late 50s – stepping out in a special live performance from the time! The album's almost got a Verve Records sort of feel – especially from the all-star tip – and tunes are more swing than bop, although there's definitely a few modern touches from time to time. Notes are all in Japanese, so it's hard to say who's on which cut – but the set features work from Eji Kitamura, Jimmy Takeuchi, Seiji Hiraoka, Akio Nagata, and others – on titles that include "Someday Sweetheart", "Moonglow", "Shine", "Sweet Lorraine", "Tendery", "Russo", and "Padam Padam". LP, Vinyl record album
(70s Japanese pressing, with insert – SKK 3019. Cover has some light wear, but vinyl is great!)
