City Of Women (Jimi Tenor & Edward Vesala)City Of Women II ... LP
Sahko (Finland), 1998. New Copy ... $18.99
Very fluid, freewheeling sounds from this Finnish quintet – material recorded relatively early in the career of some of the musicians, and already showing a tremendous ear for the sorts of fresh styles they'd create in years to come! The group is co-led by Jimi Tenor and Edward Vesala – both of whom produce – and the music is a mix of improvised jazz, electronics, and some very cool production effects – all used in ways that are looser and with more edge than some of the other sides of the Scandinavian scene were handling with jazz during the same generation. Tenor plays flute, tenor, and other instruments – Vesala handles drums and other instruments too – and the group also features a bit of harp from Iro Haarla, programming from Jimi Sumen, and instrument design and construction from Matti Knaapi. Titles include "Sergei", "Auloharp", "Ball Bearing", "Dumpster Diving", "Heat Birth", and "Dangerous Crossing". LP, Vinyl record album

Edward VesalaLumi ... CD
ECM (Germany), 1987. New Copy ... $10.99 11.99
Drummer Edward Vesala has his roots in the more dynamic Finnish fusion scene of the 70s – but here, he's working in the spacious ECM mode that really defined the second half of his career! The group's a relatively large one, heavy on saxes and flute – with reed lines from Pentti Lahti, Jorma Tapio, Tapani Rinne, and Kari Heinila – all blowing slowly, and with a very open sense of space – amidst harp, trumpet, trombone, piano, guitar, and accordion – often used in equally gently ways, so that the album has a sense of sound shapes, and an almost painterly approach to jazz. Titles include "The Wind", "Third Moon", "Lumi", "Camel Walk", "Fingo", "Early Messenger", and "Frozen Melody". CD

✨✧ Edward Vesala, Antero Honkanen, & OthersOde To Marilyn ... LP
Svart (Finland), 1973. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A tribute to Marilyn Monroe, but one that's way different than you might expect – as the music here is highly electronic, and often quite dark – served up in a mix of experimental and jazz-based modes by a very unusual Finnish group from the early 70s! The quintet features drummer Edward Vesala on percussion – with Antero Honkanen on electronics and more percussion, Teppo Hauta-aho on bass, Mikael Helasvuo on flute, and Jarmo Sermila on trumpet and organ – all instruments used in very unconventional ways, on songs that might well have sent the original Marilyn screaming from the room! Things are outside, but also quite thoughtful too – a nice mix of electric and acoustic elements used to evoke very moody, modern moments – on titles that include "Painajaisia/Nightmares", "Nuku Itku/A Doll's Cry", "Heraaminen/Awakening", "Lohdutus/Consolation", "Keskiyo/Midnight", and "Myytti Itkee Jalleen/The Myth Is Weeping Again". Toto BlankeElectric Circus ... CD
Bellaphon/Chickadisc (Poland), 1976. New Copy ... $12.99
Sweet 70s fusion from guitarist Toto Blanke – a set done a bit after his better-known record for Vertigo, and with a very similar vibe! The sound is very electric, and very much in the proggier end of jazz fusion – and Blanke gets superb help from keyboardist Jasper Van't Hof and drummer Edward Vesala – both of whom really bring a lot of crackle to the proceedings! Jasper plays both Fender Rhodes and "prepared organ" – his soaring keyboards are every bit the main attraction as Blanke's work on guitar – and both players have a nice sense of spaciousness that keeps the whole thing from ever sounding too rockish, or overly-jamming – and a few moments even get slightly funky, thanks to nice work on bass from Dave King. Titles include "Song For Zeenat", "Arabab", "Flowers All Over", "PPG", "Minister Ed", and "Spinner" CD
