Martin DennyBest Of Martin Denny ... LP
Liberty, Late 50s/Early 60s. Near Mint- ... $4.99
Not really "the best", but a pretty nice collection of Denny's early work for Liberty – with a groovy photo on the back that shows him working with the group in action, beating on a big conga, while the rest of the band plays exotic percussion! Titles include "The Enchanted Sea", "Ruby", "Bali Hai", "China Nights", "Moonlight & Shadows", "Ebb Tide", and "Harbor Lights". LP, Vinyl record album
(Stereo pressing. Cover has some ring and edge wear, light aging, peeled spot from sticker removal at the top left corner, and a small split in the bottom seam.)

Martin DennyDeep Exotica – Music From Martin Denny's Lush Lounge (Exotica Vols 1 to 3/Quiet Village/bonus tracks) ... CD
Righteous (UK), Late 50s. New Copy ... $16.99 19.99
Four full albums from the great Martin Denny – presented here with bonus tracks too! First up is the initial Exotica album – the birth of a sound and the birth of a legend – Martin Denny's first album in the Exotica series, and a record so great it named an entire genre! Denny certainly didn't invent the tropical style of easy listening that came to be known as "exotica" in the 50s – but with a record like this, he delivered the goods better than anyone else – by taking away all the too-sweet styles of Hawaiian music, and serving up a stripped-down, jazzy kind of sound! The album features Denny's classic original quartet – with Arthur Lyman on vibes and Augie Colon on bongos – and titles include "Stone God", "Jungle Flower", "Busy Port", "Lotus Land", and his hit recording of "Quiet Village". Exotica 2 is the second album in Denny's legendary Exotica trilogy – a set of records that provided the extreme definition of the small sub-genre that today has become the stuff of legend! Denny's still working here in his classic format – a small group with heavy piano lines, playful percussion, and some birdcalls sung by the members of the group! The set's a mix of strange songs from strange sources, all given the sublime Denny twist – and titles include "Singing Bamboos", "Escales", "August Bells", "Ebb Tide", "Rush Hour In Hong Kong", and "Soshu Night Serenade". Exotica 3 is sublime late 50s work from Martin Denny – his third album under the Exotica banner, and almost a deeper and weirder album than the other two! The sound here is extremely haunting – even more freed from conventional melody than the rest, and very fixated on the tonal possibilities that could be produced from Denny's unique grouping of percussion, piano, bass, and vibes. There's few tricks or gimmicks on the set – just a spare and other-worldly approach to music that's totally great! Titles include "Manila", "Mama Iti E Papa E", "Bamboo Lullaby", "Ringo Oiwake", "Moon Of Manakoora", "Congo Train", and "Beautiful Kahana". Quiet Village is an undisputed classic in the exotica genre – and the record that yielded Martin Denny his biggest hit! The title track "Quiet Village" was originally written by Les Baxter, but it was Martin Denny's approach that really managed to send the tune over the top – using spare percussion, rhythmic piano, and just the right amount of vibes and bird calls to give the track a really haunting feel. That approach is echoed throughout the set – with shifting instrumentation that includes celeste, bongos, marimbas, and marimbula as well! Titles include "Quiet Village", "Paradise Found", "Sake Rock", "Martinique", "Tune From Rangoon", and "Pagan Love Song". CD features bonus tracks too – "Llama Serenade" and "The Enchanted Sea" and more. CD

Willis JacksonTell It ... LP
Prestige, 1967. Very Good ... $14.99
A killer from the 60s years of tenorist Willis Jackson – a time when the older R&B player was really rising to the top – thanks to the sort of smoking soul jazz setting that a record like this could provide! The whole thing's great – very much in the Groove Holmes or Jack McDuff vibe of the time – familiar tunes taken in all sorts of new, groovy directions – with help from the young Pat Azzarra on guitar and Carl Wilson on Hammond – plus trumpet from the lesser-known Joseph Hadrick! Titles include "One Mint Julep", "Tangerine", "Ebb Tide", "Blue Gator", and "Secret Love". LP, Vinyl record album
(Blue trident label pressing with Van Gelder stamp. Cover has a cutout hole, small corner cut, some wear and aging, small tear in the opening, splitting in the bottom seam, and small stains in back.)

Frank SinatraOnly The Lonely ... CD
Capitol, 1958. Used ... $1.99
One of Frank Sinatra's last great ballad albums for Capitol – a sad and dreamy batch of tunes that kicks off with the incredible "Only The Lonely" – one of those Sinatra torch songs that's so great, so sad, nobody else has ever been able to record a better version, nor have they really tried! The rest of the album's great, too – with arrangements by Nelson Riddle that are very much in the Wee Small Hours mode – expressive, but subtle and sophisticated – at that level that set Sinatra so far apart from most other male singers of the 50s. Despite the creepy cover, there's a mature, adult approach to the whole thing – a new level of emotion that most other singers wouldn't find for a decade. Titles include "Only The Lonely", "Angel Eyes", "What's New", "Ebb Tide", "Spring Is Here", "Goodbye", and the sublime "One For My Baby". CD
(Late 80s pressing.)

Numero, Mid 1960s. New Copy ... $20.99 24.99
One of the most enigmatic records we've ever gotten from the Numero Group – especially since they usually go out of their way to tell the full story of most of their releases! This set purports to be the never-issued soundtrack from a 60s film titled You're Not From Around Here – but none of the film details, director, or writer show up with an internet search – leading us to believe that the label just felt that the whole thing was a great story to serve up some twang-heavy rarities from the underbelly of early 60s rock and roll. Turns out, they were plenty darn right – as the package alone is a dream – a cool octagonal box with a replica poster and a very cool look – housing a record full of rare rockers that include "A Song For Mary" by Gene Sikora, "First Love" by Bailey's Nervous Kats, "Spacewalk" by Nicky Roberts, "Wandering" by The Expressos, "Lonely Walk" by Alvie Self, "Somewhere Down The Line" by Shelley Duncan, "Haunted After Midnight" by Slim Martin, "16.88" by Hayden Thompson, "Wouldn't It Be Nice To Have Wings & Fly" by Buzz Clifford, "Tomorrow's Gone" by Charlie Megira, and "Ebb Tide" by Houston & Dorsey. Decca, Late 50s. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
A pretty nice album of exotica material – much better than most of the other Hawaiian LPs floating around at the time, and very much in the spirit of the best work by Martin Denny or Arthur Lyman. The instrumentation here is a mix of piano, vibes, and percussion – and the recording style has the instruments drifting very quietly about, sliding into one another with less of a dramatic feel than on other exotic albums – which really works well in creating a backdrop of sound. Titles include "The Naked Sea", "Ebb Tide", "Danse Arabe", "Hana Maui", "Ringo Oiwake", and "Africa". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Johnny Hammond SmithGetting Up ... LP
Prestige, 1967. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
An overlooked gem from organ jazz giant Johnny Hammond Smith! The album was cut during a time when Hammond was picking a page from the book of Groove Holmes – tightening up the tracks a bit, and going for a punchy sound that would hit big with the crossover and jukebox crowd. The tracks are all short and tight, and the approach to the tunes is a lot hipper than some of Johnny's earlier work. The group features Virgil Jones on trumpet, Houston Person on tenor, Thornel Schwartz on guitar, and Jimmy Lewis playing some mean Fender bass – which gives the set a driving soulful groove that's certainly appreciated by our ears! Johnny clearly digs it too, as he's a monster on the keys – wailing away like we've hardly ever heard him, blowing it off like he's Jimmy Smith or Jack McDuff from the same period. Titles include "The Sin In", "Summertime", "Getting Up", "The In Crowd", and a great reading of "Ebb Tide", possibly Johnny's bid at a "Misty". LP, Vinyl record album

Rock Beat, Mid 60s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
We're huge fans of monster-oriented rockers, and this cool little collection is filled with plenty of gems from the glory days of American schlock horror cinema and novelty 45s! The cuts here are from the farther reaches of the indie scene past "Monster Mash" – and although the CD features a few sound effects and film trailers, the main focus is on digging up the kind of cool and obscure singles that really open up a genre that too often is mostly confined to perennial hits! Titles include "Seance" by The Ebb Tides, "Witch Girl" by The Mysterys, "The Vooodoo" by Terry Cale", "Ghost Guitars" by Baron Daemon & The Vampires, "Zoola Zooky" by Johnny Anderson, "The Guillotine" by The Executioners, "Werewolf" by Guy Warren, "Haunted" by The Madmen, and "Count Macabre" by The Connoisseurs. A totally great cut from the glory days of Blondie – originally issued in 1981 only as a flexidisc, but every bit the same sort of hip hop groove as their classic "Rapture"! In fact, this cut might be even more of a hip hop cut – as it features Debbie Harry rapping alongside Fab 5 Freddie, who co-wrote the cut with the group. There's definitely some echoes of "Rapture" in the mix, particularly on the chorus – and the cut is almost as if they reworked the spirit of the tune for a holiday song! 12-inch, Vinyl record
