Chris JossYou've Been Spiked ... CD
Cristal/ESL (France), 2004. Used ... $4.99
Retro-styled funk from the mad Chris Joss – a producer and DJ who's been bubbling under on the French scene for years, but will no doubt burst big globally with this tasty set! Chris' music is a perfect match for the ESL label – as he's got a keen ear for a classic-styled groove, and often uses plenty of trippy bits from late 60s and early 70s inspirations in his work! The tracks on the set are mostly really funky – and work in a playful style that recalls some of our favorite European soundtrack and sound library grooves from years past. Titles include "Riviera 69", "Wrong Alley Street", "Drink Me Hot", "You've Been Spiked", "A Part In That Show", "Waking Up In The Park", and "Early Morning Wanderings". US CD also features 2 bonus tracks – "The Man With The Suitcase" and "The Wait". CD

NovalimaKarimba ... CD
ESL, 2012. Used ... $3.99
The third proper album from Novalima – proudly repping the ESL label once again with strong set inspired by earthy Afro-Peruvian earthy tradition, though played with modern clarity and club ready urgency. Traditionally minded music fused with modernist sounds and sensibilities isn't always an easy thing to pull off – but Novalima does it just right, no surprise really, given that ESL is one of finest labels out there for like-minded artist. Cajon, bongos, congas, cajita and batajones in the mix with guitar, bass, synth, keys and programming – seamlessly blended – and driven home by passionate male and female vocals. Includes "Festejo", "Mamaye", "Diablo", "Revolucion", "Guayabo", "Luna Ciega", "Hotel BCN", "Zarambe", "Karimba", "A Panar Algodon". CD

Thievery CorporationCosmic Game ... CD
ESL, 2005. Used ... $1.99
Thievery Corporation are back after a long hiatus – and they've returned to the fold with a host of surprising guest stars! The set's got a really wide range of grooves – as one might expect when the group's working with artists that include David Byrne, Perry Farrell, and The Flaming Lips! But over and above these bigger crossover names, the team's also sticking very true to their roots on other tracks – bringing in some great downtempo and Brazilian influences, and fleshing out tunes with an equally great array of lesser-known talents that includes Sista Pat, Gunjan, Verny Varela, Gigi Rezende, and Patrick De Santos. Titles include "Marching The Hate Machines", "Pela Janela", "Sol Tapado", "The Time We Lost Our Way", "A Gentle Dissolve", "Holographic Universe", "The Heart's A Lonely Hunter", and "The Cosmic Game". CD
(Please note the disc has a couple of marks but plays fine.)

✨✧ Thievery CorporationTemple Of I & I ... LP
ESL, 2017. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $22.99 24.99
Maybe one of the most sharp-edged albums in years from Thievery Corporation – if not ever – thanks to the presence of a fair bit of hip hop guest stars, in a large roster of talent that includes Mr Lif, Raquel Jones, Zee, Notch, Lou Lou Ghelichkhani, Shana Halligan, Elin Melgarejo, and Puma! The duo definitely have that classic approach to a groove that you'd know from their earlier work, but they've also moved way past the bossa, easy, and soundtrack references of before – to modes that embrace more 70s funk and soul, as well as vintage hip hop production – plus some Jamaican currents that you might guess from the album's title. Tracks include "Ghetto Matrix", "Strike The Root", "Love Has No Heart", "Lose To Find", "Weapons Of Distraction", "Fight To Survive", "Babylon Falling", and "Drop Your Guns". LP, Vinyl record album

Anthony Braxton & John McDonough6 Duos (Wesleyan) 2006 ... CD
Nessa, 2010. New Copy ... $13.99 16.98
One of the more obscure Anthony Braxton albums of the first decade of the century – but also one that's completely well worth seeking out, as it's got this warm spirit of collaborative creation that takes us back to some of his best moments of the 70s and 80s! The record features duets with trumpeter John McDonough – a Braxton fanatic who's clearly a great partner for the saxophonist to spin out ideas – trumpet notes both muted and muted, mixing with Braxton's work on alto, baritone, sopranino, and soprano sax – each with a very different sense of interplay from track to track! The album features two long, very out numbers – "Improvisation" and "Composition 168 + (103)" – then moves into a sublime sonic exercise on "Massive Breath Attack", offers a surprising reading of "Hail To The Spirit Of Liberty", and also includes the tunes "Finnish Line" and "Schizoid". A pivotal album for Bob Dylan – a record that continues the Nashville experiment of Blonde On Blonde, but which compresses it a bit more – almost like he's re-folding the electric energy back into the darkness of the spare sound of Times They Are A-Changin! Bob plays guitar, harmonica, and piano – in a core trio that just features Charlie McCoy on bass and Kenny Buttrey on drums – plus a bit of added steel guitar from Pete Drake. The album's filled with complicated dark little numbers like "All Along The Watchtower", "The Ballad Of Frankie Lee & Judas Priest", "I Am A Lonesome Hobo", "I Pity The Poor Immigrant", "The Wicked Messenger", "As I Went Out One Morning", and "Down Along The Cove". Lesley GoreGirl Talk (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Mercury/Ace (UK), 1964/1965. New Copy ... $7.99 18.99
Really tremendous work from Lesley Gore – and just the sort of record to show that she's way more than just another girl singer from the 60s! The sound here is incredibly groovy right from the start – a mix not just of the romping arrangements of Claus Ogerman (in his best Soul Searching mode), and the production of Quincy Jones – but also of Gore's great vocals, which have this surprising tinge of sexuality – and a depth that comes from the unique style of folding over her lead in the studio, to create a wide-flanged vocal approach! There's a sense of guts and lust here that goes past the usual weepy girl pop modes – a style that undeniably had an influence on other singers like Dusty Springfield or Cilla Black. Titles include "Hey Now", "You've Come Back", "Say Goodbye", "Live & Learn", "Movin Away", "It's Just About This Time", and "I Wish I Were A Boy". CD features 13 more bonus tracks too – including "That's The Boy", "After He Takes Me Home", "Consolation Prize", "A Girl In Love", "What Am I Gonna Do With You", and "You Didn't Look Round". CD

RCA, 1970. New Copy 2LP ... $25.99
The first-ever proper presentation of one of the most legendary Elvis Presley recording sessions – a marathon five day series of recordings done in Nashville, in which Elvis was working with hip backing from the Nashville Cats, and really breaking past some of the stale material that had dogged too many of his records in the 60s! The music is a great counterpart to the Presley sessions at American Studios in Memphis the year before – and like those, there's a spirit here that's undeniable – the King really getting back to basics, and showing his best ear for both the right tunes, and the right sort of folks to help him put the sound across. James Burton is on guitar, and Eddie Hinton joins in a bit too – and the rest of the group is equally legendary – a performance that was sadly originally chopped up by RCA, and issued on a number of different albums – with lots more material left in the can. 2LP set features 22 tracks in all – one album of rock, one of country – with titles that include "Stranger In The Crowd (take 5)", "You Don't Have To Say You Love Me", "Just Pretend (take 2)", "I've Lost You (take 1)", "Got My Mojo Working/Keep Your Hands Off Of It", "How The Web Was Woven (take 1)", "Tomorrow Never Comes (takes 10/11)", "Little Cabin On The Hill (take 1)", "I Washed My Hands In Muddy Water", and "The Fool". Be! (Germany), 1975. New Copy ... $9.99
A fantastic electric session from the 70s Polish scene – a record that not only features freewheeling trumpet from Tomasz Stanko, and sweet Fender Rhodes from Adam Mackowicz, but also includes some very inventive work on drums and percussion from the great Czelaw Bartkowski! All three players are at the top of their game here – artists who have a strong knowledge of the outside territory of jazz, but also often work a bit more inside – so that their music here can be open and exploratory, but also come back to more soulful, swinging territory too! Most tracks are long, and have the sort of textural energy you'd know especially from Stanko's work – and titles include "Countdown", "Unit", "Solar", "Matce", "Ballad For Randi Hultin", "Zaduma", and "Pony Lungz". Wieslaw WilczkiewiczFly Ensemble ... CD
GAD (Poland), Early 80s. Used ... $6.99
Sweet fusion sounds from early 80s Poland – some really wonderful music cut under the leadership of guitarist Wieslaw Wilczkiewicz, who works here with to larger ensembles that are awash in reed lines, keyboards, and a bit of strings! The expanded format almost makes the music feel like soundtrack jazz at points – or at least that late 70s variety that was showing up in the US, as blacksploitation funk gave way to jazzy fusion – and like the best of that work, Wieslaw creates these cool tunes that are full of color, and very visual – never going too far over the top with any sort of rock-jamming fusion approach, and instead balancing the guitar lines in a nice way with the larger tonal backdrops. Titles include "Brass Key", "Ruda Magda", "In Blue Eyes", "Number Two Woman", "Pawelek", and "Varadero" – and a nice cover of "Hi Fly". CD

VariousElvis Presley Connection Vol 2 – 33 Roots & Covers Of Elvis Presley ... CD
Bear Family (Germany), Late 50s. New Copy ... $19.99 22.99
A great look at the Elvis Presley universe – not sounds by the King himself, but music that first inspired his creations – and other songs that have contemporary artists inspired by the records that Presley was releasing during the early years of his career! The collection is fantastic – a great sideline to the famous sounds of Elvis and Sun Records – and there's a really great range of material included throughout, all supported by very detailed notes that really show the thought and care that went into the selection of tracks. The whole thing is as vibrant and colorful as the image on the cover – and titles on this second volume include "Snoopin Around" by Joel Gray, "I Got Stung" by Eli Whitney, "A Big Hunk O Love" by Johnny Devlin & The Devils, "I Want You With Me" by Bobby Darlin, "Slicin Sand Twist" by Bryan Davies, "Working On The Building" by The Blackwood Brothers, "Surrender" by Rikki Henderson, "GI Blues" by Ronnie Knull & His Rock A Kings, "She's Not You" by Les Carle, "Good Luck Charm" by The Marvelettes, "They Remind Me Too Much Of You" by Don Robertson, "Just Tell Him Jane Said Hello" by Gerri Granger, "Girl Next Door Went A Walkin" by Thomas Wayne, "Dirty Dirty Feeling" by Danny Ezba, "Like A Baby" by Priscilla Bowman, and "Stuck On You" by Bobby Stevens. 33 tracks in all – with a great booklet! A rare instrumental outing from Eden – a Polish trio that first began as a blues-rock group, then moved into progressive territory, before hitting a lighter folksier style – none of which really comes close to the vibe of this material from a rare sound library session in 1976! There's fusion elements in the mix at times – like tight drums and funky flute – but the record also has a wider palette of colors, too – quite a surprise, given that the group is just a trio – as they find ways to evoke some larger studio ensemble sounds from time to time. As with all the great titles in this series, there's detailed notes in both Polish and English – and titles include "Sen", "Dzungla", "Scherzo", "Eksperyment Nr 1", "Daleka Podroz", and "Male Inwencje". A jazz set, but one that's in a very Stones Throw mode – as the music here mixes jazz elements with more contemporary production elements, and blends together the live and programmed in a mighty nice way! The group's a quartet, most of whom have played on other Stones Throw albums – and the lineup features twin keyboard work from Yuval Havkin (aka Rejoicer) and Nitai Hershkovits, plus bass from Yonatan Albalak and drums from Amir Bresler – the last of whom has a great rhythmic pulse that often defines the energy of the set! Titles include "Notre Damn", "Pulse 420", "Four Green Yellows", "Iris One", "Lake Vu", "The Pit & The Beggar", and "Yaki's Delight". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ George BensonGood King Bad ... CD
CTI/Mosaic, 1975. Used ... $9.99
Sweet 70s funk from George Benson – an album that's a bit smoother than some of his earlier work, but still free from the commercial polish of his later hits! Maestro David Matthews is at the helm for this session – and most numbers have a full backing from players who include some of the best of the CTI/Kudi generation – including Ronnie Foster and Bobby Lyle on keyboards, Joe Farrell on flute, Fred Wesley on trombone, Eric Gale on rhythm guitar, Dave Friedman on vibes, and Steve Gadd on drums – who manages to kick in a nicely funky undercurrent, even on some of the mellower numbers. George's guitar is filled with warmly chromatic hues – gliding away nicely on titles that include the slow funky "Em", plus "Siberian Workout", "Shell Of A Man", "Hold On I'm Coming", "One Rock Don't Make No Boulder", and "Theme From Good King Bad". Daniel Bernardes & Drumming GPLiturgy Of The Birds – In Memoriam Olivier Messiaen ... CD
Clean Feed (Portugal), 2019. New Copy ... $7.99
Pianist Daniel Bernardes has a lot of percussionists in his group – not just drummer Mario Costa in the core trio with Antonio Augusto Aguiar on bass – but another quartet of musicians, who add in vibes, marimba, glockenspiel, and other percussion – all in a set of tracks based on the compositional ideas of composer Olivier Messiaen! The music is still very strongly in a jazz-based mode – and the percussion is often used lightly, as melodic as it is rhythmic – but there's a great sense of note clusters going on, in ways that make the music inherently rhythmic, even when the drums are taking a back seat to the piano and vibes. Titles include "Globular Clusters", "Sobre Kieslowski I", "Ostinato Interludio E Cancao V", "19", and "Bolero". CD

Acid Jazz (UK), 1992. New Copy ... $13.99 14.99
Fantastically sharp work from the Brand New Heavies – recorded live in Tokyo during their best early days with N'Dea Davenport in the lead – and with a sound that's every bit as tight as their sound in the studio! In fact, the live setting might even be better – as the group were getting some slicker production touches for the American market in the early 90s – but this live date has all the raw energy they brought to the scene right at the start – a great reminder that BNH are a funk band first, and a soul band second! The drums are tight, the guitar lines razor sharp, and the group gets help from guest players who include Max Beesley on keyboards and Mike Smith on saxes. Titles include "Dream Come True", "Shakedown", "Never Stop", "Mr Tanaka", "Stay This Way", "Got To Give", "Gimme One Of Those", "BNH", and "Ride In The Sky" – plus nice remakes of "Doin It To Death" and "Don't Let It Go To Your Head". Polydor, 1969. New Copy ... $13.99 14.99
A rare lost treasure from James Brown – the full, unedited version of a live concert that was cut up and butchered for the Sex Machine album – presented here for the first time ever, with a huge amount of never-issued tunes! Sex Machine was one of those "fake" concert albums from James – some original live recordings, other studio tracks tricked out – and put together in a way that never really made much sense. This set is something completely different altogether – a James Brown concert from start to finish, complete with some wickedly sharp patter from the stage – and long tunes that really show his group hitting on all burners! The lineup of musicians include three drummers at once – Clyde Stubblefield, Jabo Stars, and Melvin Parker – alongside Fred Wesley on trombone, Maceo Parker on alto, Jimmy Nolen on guitar, and Charles Sherrell on bass. James himself plays a bit of organ at instrumental moments – and tracks include the never-released "Lowdown Popcorn", "World", "Spinning Wheel", "Try Me", "I Got The Feelin/Lickin Stick Lickin Stick", and "Give It Up Or Turnit A Loose" – next to versions of "There Was A Time", "Say It Loud", "I Don't Want Nobody To Give Me Nothing", "Mother Popcorn", and "I Can't Stand Myself". A fantastic late 70s album from James Brown – maybe one of his last true classics of the decade! The vibe's shifted a bit since the Payback era, but the sound is still totally great – as James is working closely here with Charles Sherrell (aka Sweet Charles) – in a style that's slightly different than his work with Fred Wesley or Maceo, but no less funky overall! There's still loads of sharp angles and gritty elements in the grooves – and titles include the tasty cut "If You Don't Give a Doggone About It", done with the JBs, one that has a nice choppy "Doin It To Death" sort of groove – plus "People Who Criticize", "Give Me Some Skin", "Have A Happy Day", "Bessie", "Summertime", "People Wake Up & Live", and "Take Me Higher & Groove Me". Crackin definitely have a special touch on this 70s set – a way of mixing together funk, soul, and jazz influences – all in a groove that's every bit as tight as contemporaries like Rufus or Average White Band, even though Crackin never reached the heights that they did! The core instrumentation is always right on the money, and never too overproduced – letting guitars and keyboards lay out the groove, then bringing in vocals from Leslie Smith and Arno Lucas, both great singers who sound especially nice when they come together. Tunes are wonderfully written – quite memorable, without ever sounding like commercial hits – and titles include "Nobody Else", "Double Love", "Too Young", "I Could Be Anything", "Don't Cha Love Me", "In Between", and "Kalalee". Down To The BoneClassic Album Series (From Manhattan To Staten/Urban Grooves/Spread The Word – with bonus tracks) (3CD set) ... CD
Dome (UK), 1996/1998/2001. New Copy 3CD ... Just Sold Out!
The first three albums from Down To The Bone – packaged here in a nicely-priced set, with bonus tracks too! First up is From Manhattan To Staten – a record that moves across the boroughs of New York – and which also managed to have a huge impact on the Windy City as well – given that the music of Down To The Bone was perfect for the groove of the Chicago steppers scene in the 90s! The group are a bit jazz, a bit soul, and have this chunky funky rhythm at the bottom that shows their roots in the British scene – maybe a mix of electric jazz modes with inspirations from artists like Soul II Soul or the James Taylor Quartet – taken to a style that's slightly tighter overall. There's a fair bit of programming in the rhythms, mixed with live instrumentation from group members – and titles include the classic "Staten Island Groove", plus "Muesli Brown", "Savour The Flavour", "Brooklyn Heights", "3 Days In Manhattan", "Carlito's Way", "On The Corner Of Darcy Street", and "17 Mile Drive". Urban Grooves is the second album from Down To The Bone – and a set that really continues the vibe of their debut – a mix of programmed funky rhythms and liver jazz instrumentation – all awash in a groove that really helped them cross over big on both sides of the Atlantic! The production is tight, but looser than smooth jazz of the time – and the record's got more than a few strong keyboard and saxophone solos to offset its rhythmic patterns, which often draw heavily from the best styles of the British soul scene in the late 80s and early 90s. Titles include "A Little Touch Of Soul", "Phat City Hustler", "Joy Is A Good Groove", "Bump N Hustle", "To The Bone", "The Zodiac", and "Urban Jazz". Spread The Word is the overlooked third album from Down To The Bone – a set that maybe didn't take the world by storm as much as their first two, but which still has the group very much in fine formation! All the best previous elements are in place here – that strong mix of funky jazz instrumentation with contemporary rhythmic production – almost a blend of some of the funkier club styles of the time with more mainstream fusion, at a level that made these guys both a hit on the dancefloors and for kicking back at the crib! Titles include "The Backburner", "Righteous Reeds", "Sound As A Pound", "Bridgeport Boogie", "The Lowdown", and "Black Choice". 3CD set features all albums in small LP-style jackets – and bonus tracks include "Deja Vu", "Concrete Jungle", "Staten Island Groove (live studio version)", and "Brooklyn Heights (live studio version)". The African artists contribute a lot of vocals and work on kora that's especially beautiful – and the other players are led by Gregg Middleton on bass, who also does all the arrangements – and the combo features Ernie Fields on saxes, Nolan Smith on trumpet, and Fred Wesley on trombone! Early prog jazz genius from the mighty Embryo – and an album that perfectly fuses their love of world rhythms and electric jamming grooves – at a level that made them one of the coolest groups on the European scene at the time! Core work here is by a trio – and the percussion by Edgar Hofmann ranges from playful to hypnotic – with heavy drums and basslines crafting some incredible rhythms that spin out strongly – sometimes jamming, sometimes a bit looser – and often topped with great work on flute by Hansi Fischer, and this ultra-cool Leslie piano played by Christian Burchard – which has a nice fuzzy sound. The album's got lots of other sweet organ and mellotron lines – and Hofmann also plays soprano sax and violin as well – on titles that include "Tausendfussler", "Time", "Revenge", "Espagna Si Franco Finished", "Try To Be", and "Change". Noah HowardBlack Ark (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Freedom/Muzak (Japan), 1969. New Copy ... $24.99 About June 23, 2021
Quite possibly the strongest moment of genius ever from saxophonist Noah Howard – a legendary album that captures the altoist at the height of his powers! The 1969 session was recorded at a time when Howard's contemporaries were making big noise overseas – but the date finds Noah at home in New York, working with a lineup that includes Arthur Doyle on tenor, Earl Cross on trumpet, Leslie Waldron on piano, Norris Jones on bass, and Mohammed Ali on drums – all in a groove that's a perfect link between the avant sound of Shepp and Ayler in the 60s, and some of the rougher modes of the loft jazz scene to come! Howard's got a great way of stating a theme on these tunes – a manner that has the group in very cohesive formation at the beginning, often with righteous overtones – then opening up freely in the ensuing space with some incredibly bold solos. The whole thing's amazing – a US date that easily matches, if not beats, the brilliance of the best BYG/Actual generation overseas – and titles include "Domiabra", "Ole Negro", "Mount Fuji", and "Queen Anne". Great package too – a tri-fold gatefold cover, and very unique! CD

An oft-overlooked gem from the JBs – their last album for People Records, and a stone funk classic that's every bit as essential as the others! The band is still in fine fine form – with none of the fast-funk or proto-disco of some later recordings – and they're working here in some really tight song formats that almost go back to the early days of the group's first few singles. The album's filled with great playing, wonderful grooves, and Fred Wesley's keen sense of humor – which sparks the whole set with a sense of warmth and creative play that show why the JBs are still the greatest funk band ever. Includes the excellent "Little Boy Black", which begins with some tasty James Brown vocals; the oft-sampled "Rockin' Funky Watergate"; plus "Step Child", "Makin Love", and "Rice & Ribs". Not as drawn out as Doing It To Death, but more complicated than Food For Thought, and still a totally essential bit of funk! LP, Vinyl record album

JBsFood For Thought/Doing It To Death/Damn Right I Am Somebody ... CD
People/Robinsongs (UK), Early 70s. New Copy 2CD ... $14.99 20.99
Essential funk in a single set – three killer albums from James Brown's legendary backing group! First up is Food For Thought – the classic first album by The JBs – James Brown's Fred Wesley-led backing band, and the force behind most of his greatest records of the early 70s! The band are incredible at this point – sharper, harder, and funkier than just about any other combo around – and that includes all the thousands of groups in the funky 45 underground who were always trying to copy their sound, but never got things this right! Not only are the rhythms the stuff of legend – but the use of the instruments is far far above the norm – as can be heard on the mindblowing "The Grunt", which was sampled heavily by Public Enemy to great fame – and which features a saxophone solo that sounds more like a whistling tea kettle! The set collects some of the group's best early singles, and includes all of the short little funky cuts that made them a legend right out of the box – "Pass the Peas", "The Grunt", "These Are The JBs", "Hot Pants Road", "Wine Spot", "To My Brother", "Blessed Blackness", "Theme From King Heroin", "Escapism (parts 1 & 2), and "Gimme Some More" – all together here in one tight little album of massive funky hard beats and breaks! Doing It To Death is an incredible album – a landmark piece of funk that nobody should be without, funk fan or not! The album is the second to feature James Brown's famous backing combo of the early 70s – and unlike their first one, which was really more of a collection of singles, this album has the group playing hard, long, and loud, in the free funk improvisational mode that was James' real contribution to the music at the time. The tracks are all incredibly long, with James at the forefront, egging the band on with shouts and comments – but also letting them open up large instrumentally, playing in a mode that's as much jazz as it is funky soul. The whole thing's peppered with some nice shorter segues between tracks – but the long cuts are the winners, and are some of the best funk ever recorded! Titles include "Mo Peas", "Doing It To Death", "La Di Da La Di Day", "You Can Have Watergate, Just Gimme Some Bucks & I'll Be Straight", and "Sucker". Last up is Damn Right I Am Somebody – quite possibly our favorite record by the JBs, ever! The set starts with a wonderful conversational bit – rapping and musing on the idea of "Damn Right, I Am Somebody" – showing the group in a political and righteous mode for the first time ever. The grooves then kick in – with the same heavy funk as on earlier records, but also a nice nod towards experimental production – from strange fade ups and fade downs, to stark time and rhythm changes, and even bits of electronics used to create some very cool moments in the grooves! The whole thing's as dead funky as can be, and is stuffed with insane classics like "Blow Your Head", "Same Beat", "Damn Right I am Somebody", "I'm Payin' Taxes, What am I Buyin'", and a great cover of Marvin Gaye's "You Sure Love to Ball"! Quincy Jones & Bill CosbyNew Mixes Vol 1 ... CD
Concord, 1969. Used ... $2.99
A classic funky soundtrack – remixed! In a surprisingly great move, Concord Records follows their re-release of the soundtrack to the original Bill Cosby Show of the late 60s with remixes of the Quincy Jones tunes by a variety of current producers! The work really steps off from the original sound of the show's music – using the best bits and quirky standout moments of the tracks, but crafting them into grooves that fit the specific moods of eacy of the producers. This is way more than a simple remix project, and is probably better stated by the "new mixes" title – with tracks that include "Where's Eddie" by Echo, "Jimmy's Theme" by Mario Caldato Jr, "Pelando" by Los Amigos Invisibles, "Along Came Mr Nobody" by Ursula 1000, "Matthew Herbert's Technically Amateur Mix" by Herbert, "Valeurs Personelles" by Cornershop, and "Miss Leslie" by Soulive. Lost soulful sounds from Osiris – one of the many high-concept funk ensembles to spring up in the wake of Earth Wind & Fire – and one of the better ones too! The combo's got some mighty tight grounding in the bass work of Tyrone Brunson – stepping out here in an early role to really help forge the group's groove from the bottom up – basslines with percussion, then jazzier elements on the top – including some wicked work by Fred Wesley & The Horny Horns! Those added horns really pack a lot of punch on the record – working perfectly with the group vocals that step out on most of the numbers – maybe not in ways that are as righteous as you'd guess from the title or the cover, but plenty darn groovy overall. Soulmusic.com (UK), Late 70s/1980s/1990s. New Copy 3CD ... $24.99
A big overview collection of work from the key years of reedman David Sanborn – a player who certainly knew how to hit the heights with the sales of his records, but also had a surprisingly strong, rich career over the years! If you only think of Sanborn as a smooth jazz pioneer, then you'll find plenty to open up your mind here – as David first recorded as a solo act for Warner Brothers at a time when he was making key contributions to sessions for other artists, then found ways to consistently stay ahead of the fusion and electric jazz mainstream – to the point where in the later recordings here, he's almost back to basics in a really surprising way! As with other great anthology collections on this label, there's a really strong track selection – one that not only features key album tracks, but singles and even a few live cuts too – a really well-chosen batch of 46 tunes that include "Believer (12" mix)", "Love & Happiness (live)", "High Roller", "Flight", "Heba", "Short Visit", "This Masquerade", "Lesly Ann (radio)", "Smile (live)", "Infant Eyes", "Naked Moon", "Brother Ray", "Imogene", "Come To Me Nina", "Lotus Blossom (live)", "Daydreaming", "Same Girl", "Bang Bang (single)", "Summer", "I Do It For Your Love", "The Water Is Wide", "Got To Give It Up (rmx edit)", "Slam (7" version)", and "Duck Ankles". SouliveDoin' Something ... CD
Blue Note, 2001. Used ... $3.99
Great stuff from one of the funkiest combos around! Soulive are part of the second wave of US jam-band funk acts – the sort of groovy groups that have been springing up in the wake of Medeski, Martin, & Wood's success over the past 10 years – and the combo's got a tight no-nonsense funk groove that mixes Hammond B-3, guitar, and drums into a monstrously heavy sound that will blow the top off your speakers! The group's debut CD – Turn It Out – sold loads as an underground indie at Dusty Groove, and this Blue Note debut by the group is destined for equally great fame. The core heavy funk sound is still firmly in place – and the group have added some extra elements, like the trombone of Fred Wesley, which meets up with some other horns on a few tracks, plus the vocals of Stephanie McKay, sings on one especially soulful number, "Romantic". Tracks include "Hurry Up & Wait", "Doin Something", "One In Seven", "Cannonball", "Shaheed", and "Solid". CD

Sweet Charles (aka Charles Sherell)For Sweet People From Sweet Charles ... LP
People/Universal (Japan), 1974. New Copy ... $39.99
A supremely fantastic album, and one that's always woefully overlooked in discussions of James Brown's incredible People label! Sweet Charles, Charles Sherell, was a great lost soul vocalist who had a voice that was warm and mellow, with a sweetness that was often missing from James' singing – but which sounded great with his arrangements and production. Fred Wesley and Dave Matthews arranged this one and only album, and the record's a great blend of sweet soul tracks, funky numbers, and other stellar grooves. There's a killer version of "Soul Man", that begins with a very tasty break; the monster "Yes, It's You", which has a sweetly sliding intro that's ripe for sampling; the righteous political "Why Can't I Be Treated Like A Man" – and lots of other nice ones too! LP, Vinyl record album

TrusselLove Injection ... LP
Elektra, 1980. Very Good- ... $6.99
Trussel may have cut this one and only album at the end of the 70s – but they've got a strength that's kept them going for years – despite a lack of success at the time! The record's a sweet modern soul stunner – a record that picks up a sweet jazzy groove that's augmented with lots of great funky touches from Fred Wesley – all in ways that are a real precursor to the 80s groove generation! The album's not really disco, but more in the clubby funk territory of The Horny Horns – a mode that's got the ensemble coming down tight on the groove, and layering the sharp instrumentation with catchy vocal refrains that give the whole album a really infectious vibe. Titles include the classic "Gone For The Weekend" – plus "Love Injection", "Sweet Love", "I Love It", "Big City Rocker", and "If You Can't See It". LP, Vinyl record album
(White label promo. Includes the printed inner sleeve. Cover has a promo stamp, some surface wear, and a mark from sticker removal.)

Polydor/Get On Down, Early 70s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... $24.99 30.98
Part 1 of the legendary compilation series of James Brown Productions for his own People Records imprint – with monster tracks by The JBs, Lyn Collins, and Maceo! Now a long-established treasure trove of stone classic funky soul, it's easy to forget that the deeper legacy of the People Records roster was pretty well overshadowed by James Brown's pivotal figure for quite a few years before this hugely necessary series. It was a sampler's dream in the 80s, and it's still a listener's dream – and a vital overview of once overlooked gems! Tracks include "Same Beat" by the Fred Wesley & The JBs, "Parrty" by Maceo & The Macks, "If You Don't Get It The First Time" by Fred Wesley & The JBs, "Take Me Just As I Am" by Lyn Collins, "Rock Me Again & Again & Again & Again" by Lyn Collins, "Hot Pants Road" by The JBs, "Mama Feelgood" by Lyn Collins, "Think" by Lyn Collins, and "Gimme Some More" by The JBs! BBE (UK), 2021. New Copy ... $24.99 29.99
Funky sounds old and new – a great collection of cuts that are hand-picked by Jasper The Vinyl Junkie, and which have a way of bridging the best modes of the 70s and some of the best sounds from recent years! The work here all sounds very classic, even if some of it is contemporary – rhythms that are mostly upbeat, but not really house, disco, or club – just upbeat funky nuggets that are filled with plenty of elements from jazz and soul! Titles include "Funky Cookie" by Exile One, "JB's Latin" by Spitting Image, "Safari" by Ashantis, "Berlin 1 (Hot Pants Road)" by Tihomir Pop Asanovic, "Nobody Else But You (Opolopo rmx)" by Steve Arrington, "Black Hole" by Stato Brado with Fred Wesley, "Crusien" by Thomas Siffling Trio, "Flotational Device" by E Live, "Let The Drums Speak (Harvey Lindo edit)" by Bah Samba with The Fatback Band, "Trippin High" by Eric Legnini Trio, "Painful Pleasure" by Hubert Eaves, and "Stay Cool" by Jaki Whiren & John Cartwright. Trojan/Music On Vinyl (Netherlands), Late 60s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... About August 21, 2021
A really excellent collection of rocksteady work on Trojan Records – material that's much more expansive than some of the more hit-based sets of this type on the market – in a way that really draws a firm line between the roots of ska and the early days of reggae! There's a lot of tracks here that aren't easy to find otherwise, mixed with others from some of the key Jamaican singers of the moment – served up in two dozen tracks that include "Revival" by Leslie Butler & The Originals Orchestra, "Right On Time" by The Sensations, "She Said She Loves Me" by The Sealmates, "Can't See You" by Ken Boothe, "Reborn" by The Maytals, "Over Again" by Stranger & Gladdy, "Be Mine" by The Rulers, "One Scotch One Bourbon One Beer" by Alfred Brown, "Miss Anti Social" by Austin Fairchild & The Hippies, "Give Me That Love" by Nehmiah Reid, "The Shadow Of Your Smile" by Tommy McCook & The Supersonics, "You've Got Something" by Ewan & Jerry, and "So Nice Like Rice" by Charley Kelly. VariousShapes 08:02 ... CD
Tru Thoughts (UK), 2008. Used 2CD ... $6.99
Plenty of tracks at a mighty nice price – all of them with the fresh funky sound of the Tru Thoughts label! The package is a great entry in their Shapes series – 2CDs with 27 tracks – all at a price that will have you really digging the full range of styles the groundbreaking imprint has to offer! As with other volumes, the grooves are a mix of contemporary modes that draw inspiration from older soul, funk, and hip hop – sometimes laying out that inspiration in direct ways, sometimes really abstracting the sounds into very leftfield directions. Titles include "One Woman Army" by Hint, "2456 Nice" by Kinny, "Prayer" by Lizzy Parks, "I Don't Wanna Stop (Marc Mac rmx)" by The Bamboos, "Pencils For Dolphins (Wyndham Earl rmx)" by Tm Juke, "Make Me Want More" by Kylie Auldist, "You're Listening To The Worlds" by Belleruche, "Dub Del Pacifico" by Quantic Presents Flowering Inferno, "Last Night (Bassnectar rmx)" by Me & You, "The Rising (Bullion rmx)" by Natural Self, "Get Up (Diesler rmx)" by Hot 8 Brass Band, and "Disco Caribe" by Quantic. ✨✧ James BrownEverybody's Doin' The Hustle & Dead On The Double Bump ... LP
Polydor, 1975. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Forget the "hustle" and "bump" in the title – as the set's not a disco cash-in set by the Godfather – and instead is an overlooked funky gem from the 70s! The set still follows strongly in the best modes of the early 70s – with that sharp JB-styled groove underneath – and in a way, the record's bit like Breaking Bread was to that group's great run – maybe a bit more focused, and slightly more upbeat – but still with a righteous approach to funk overall! David Matthews conducts, and players include Fred Wesley on trombone, Maceo Parker on alto, St Clair Pickney on tenor, and both Charles Sherrell and Leon Pendarvis on clavinet – and a few tracks are remakes of older numbers, nestled next to some newer gems. The set features the standout funky cuts "Your Love", which has a great break at the beginning, and "Superbad Superslick" – and other titles include "Hustle", "Turn On The Heat & Build Some Fire", "Calm & Cool", and a remake of "Papa's Got A Brand New Bag". ✨✧ Erasmo CarlosSonhos E Memorias 1941 to 1972 ... LP
Polydor (Brazil), 1972. Near Mint- Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A record filled with cover images that run from Richard Nixon to Elvis Presley, to Mick Jagger, Caetano Veloso, Chairman Mao, Jorge Ben, Jimi Hendrix, and Andy Warhol – and a set whose sound definitely seems to live up to such heady company from the 20th century! Erasmo Carlos is at his inventive best here – very playfully creative, yet in a way that refines his style from his trippier years – almost a reinvention of the singer's approach for a new generation of MPB – in a manner that some of the Tropicalia artists were doing at the time. The songwriting and production are great – and if the album were in English, it may well have been a global hit (although it did pretty well at home back in Brazil!) – and titles include "Mane Joao", "Largo Da Segunda Feira", "Sabado Morto", "E Proibido Fumar", "Preciso Encontrar Um Amigo", and "Mundo Cao". The group features Oscar Moore on guitar and Wesley Prince on bass – and some tracks have extra vocals from Maxine Johnson. CD

✨✧ Bootsy CollinsUltra Wave ... LP
Warner, 1980. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Bootsy's tightening things up a bit from before, but still sounding plenty darn great – that classic Collins groove in all its P-Funk glory! All the best elements are certainly in place – production by George Clinton and Bootsy, horn arrangements by Fred Wesley, and the slinky soulful sound that made Bootsy's albums some of the most enduring of the P-Funk posse. The album shows a bit of the transformation in soul bass playing that Bootsy helped to foster during the late 70s – but it's still not as "whompin" as some of the many groups that were springing up in his wake – a good thing, to us, because so many of Bootsy's imitators had a way of playing their bass way too much! Titles include "Mug Push", "Is That My Song", "It's A Musical", "Sound Crack", and "Fat Cat". LP, Vinyl record album
(Includes the printed inner sleeve. Cover has light waviness from moisture, but looks great overall.)
