A gem of a record from the mid 70s west coast scene – a really overlooked set from vocalist Laura Allen, recorded with a wonderfully breezy, soulful sound! Laura's got a voice that's perfect if you dig singers like Linda Lewis or Maria Muldaur, particularly the former – a bit jazzy at points, but usually focused straight ahead – but with a gentle flow that's completely seductive. Production is nicely laidback – never too studio slick – but the instrumentation's also nice and tight, and Laura plays some cool instruments on the record – a bit of clay drums, zither, and dulcimer – which bring in some folksy touches to her music, especially alongside some of the electricity in the keyboards and guitar. Most songs are originals by Laura – and titles include "Opening Up To You", "Sunny Day", "Stairway", "Promises", "Love Can Be", "Come As You Are", and "Hole In My Bucket". Emmanuelle Parrenin sings here in a timeless style that might almost be called folksy – especially in the return to tradition styles of the UK 70s scene – but it's also got a slightly headier feel overall, almost trippy at times, with a sense of crumbling innocence that's further underscored by spare instrumentation that includes hurdy-gurdy, spinet, and dulcimer. Most tunes just feature vocals and some combination of these instruments – and a few numbers feature slightly larger backing, but never a full group mode. Veronique Chalot sings in French, but she cut this beautiful album for the Materiali Sonori label in Italy – with a really groundbreaking mix of styles that definitely loves up to the other gems we love on the label at the time! As you might guess from the cover, Veronique plays dulcimer, and sings in a dreamy style that befits her image on the front – but the small group behind her also brings in all sorts of other unusual instrumentation – flutes, percussion, bass, and violin – used in these eerie ways alongside Chalot's moody vocals – creating a vibe that's somewhere between early solo work by Nico, and the soundtrack to Wicker Man! Brilliant 70s work from McCoy Tyner – a post-Coltrane batch of spiritual soaring jazz tracks, played and written by the man who's got more right to the style than just about anyone else! Tyner's joined by a pretty strong batch of players – including reedmen Gary Bartz on soprano and alto sax; Joe Ford on flute, soprano, and alto on flute, soprano, and alto; and Ron Bridgewater on soprano and tenor – all players who really help keep a Coltrane-esque spirit burning bright in the music, even while McCoy's working his own changes as well! A strange bit of country soul – but a great one, and unique gem from Don Crawford! Another Shade Of Black was recorded by Don Crawford in New York, with bit of a crossover folksy feel that's more like work you'd hear from Muscle Shoals, but it's in a slightly more experimental mode. The album's got Crawford on vocals and acoustic guitar, and instrumentation includes a string quartet, banjo, dulcimer, and a bit of organ. A record that really takes off nicely in the sort of acoustic territory first explored in the American underground of the 60s and 70s – evolving past some of the solo modes of contemporary musicians who might be a bit too tied to a Takoma aesthetic, while still showing that deft performance is still at the core of a record like this! Elijah McLaughlin plays both 6 and 12 string guitars – but almost always with contributions that include his own sonic touches on electronics, effects, tape loops, and even field recordings – augmented by hammered dulcimer from Joel Styzens, piano from Adler Scheidt, bass from Jason Toth, and cello and a bit of effects from Katinka Klejin. Some of the most lovely work we've ever heard from Emmanuelle Parrenin – a collection of unissued material done at the end of the 70s, with a vibe that's maybe even more heavenly than some of her better-known records! There's a loose, flowing quality to most of these tracks – pastoral at times, and very organic – voice mixed with light instrumentation that includes reed work from Didier Malherbe, electric piano from Jacques Denjean, and a whole host of acoustic elements on percussion, guitar, and even dulcimer. As with Emmanuelle's best material, there's a quality here that's very hard to peg – unconventional, but never completely experimental – and done with a sense of warmth and beauty that really fits the image on the cover.
