VariousDance The Latin – Swingin' Mambos, Soulful Salsa & Funky Rhythms From The Hip Latin Dancefloors Of New York City ... CD
Fania/Jazzman (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... $8.99
The vaults of Fania Records, plumbed by the Jazzman crew – all in a double-strength approach to Latin grooves! The wealth of great music on Fania, Tico, and related labels is well-known to Latin groovers worldwide – but the Jazzman crew have managed to bring a nicely fresh perspective to the labels here – going for cuts that show the labels' appeal to the funky 45 underground, thanks to a healthy dose of soul, jazz, and funk in the mix! Most of these numbers represent the cream of the crop of the New York scene of the late 60s and early 70s – not the mainstream one, but the side that was bubbling under uptown – as influences from Spanish Harlem mixed in nicely with older influences from Cuba and Puerto Rico. CD features 18 tracks in all – most of the numbers that were previously on the expensive 7" box sets that were part of the Fania/Jazzman project – and the set also features all the original notes on each tune too. Titles include "Doug's Room" by Mauricio Smith, "Come An Get It" by Eddie Palmieri & Cal Tjader, "Soana" by Noro Morales, "Hit The Bongo" by Tito Puente, "Geronimo" by Bobby Valentin, "Fever" by La Lupe, "Soul Drummers" by Ray Barretto, "Black Brothers" by Tito Puente, "Mambomongo" by Mongo Santamaria, "Camel Walk" by The Latinaires, "Tighten Up" by Al Escobar, "I Got The Feeling" by Chollo, "Use It Before You Lose It" by Bobby Valentin, and "Never Learned To Dance" by Harvey Averne. ✨✧ IntuitIntuit ... CD
Compost (Germany), 2004. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An incredible album from Intuit – not only for the solid work by the group itself, but even more so for the wonderful range of guest stars that includes Doug Carn, Flora Purim, Airto, and Andy Bey! There's a cosmic vibe here that's really amazing – dipping back into the headiest days of 70s groove, and coming up with a sound that's steeped in tradition, yet brushed off with a fresh approach that's very much in keeping with the Compost Records sound. The album's one of the most organic and soulful we've ever heard from Compost – and Intuit really manage to get some incredible work out of their guest stars – especially Bey, who sounds better here than we've heard in years, with a tone and approach that rivals his 70s work with Horace Silver and Gary Bartz! The groove is a mix of soul jazz, Brazilian rhythms, and some sweet modern electric work – all percolating together with a sound that's so good, you'll wonder why nobody ever thought of it before! Titles include "Crianca Das Ondas", "Western Sunrise", "Fenytola", "A New Beginning", "Planet Birth", "O Preguicoso", "Wewa", and "Bubblin Jam". CD

We wish she'd record more often, but we're pleased enough that each album she's delivered to date has been truly excellent! Guests includ Anthony Hamilton, Doug E Fresh, Eve & The A Group. Includes "Blessed", "So In Love" with Anthony Hamilton, "Shame" feat Eve & The A Group, "All Cried Out Redux" feat Doug E Fresh, "Quick", "Making You Wait", "Missing You", "When I Wake Up", "Womanifesto", "Rolling Hills" and more. 15 tracks in all. ✨✧ Adrian Younge & Ali Shaheed MuhammadJazz Is Dead ... CD
Jazz Is Dead, 2020. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Maybe the most fantastic record to date from the hands of Adrian Younge – a project done in collaboration with Ali Shaheed Muhammad, and one that features guest appearances from some of the musical giants who first inspired Dusty Groove many years Back! The core energy of the set comes from Younge and Muhammad – who are in a similar funky soul groove as their previous Midnight Hour recording serving up a blend of jazz and soul in a mode that clearly draws a lot of 70s inspiration, but which also has this very fresh, contemporary energy too. Yet there's also a strong difference here once each of the guests step into the mix – a stellar lineup that features alto from Gary Bartz, Fender Rhodes from Marcos Valle and Joao Donato, flute from Brian Jackson, drums from Ivan Mamao Conti, and Hammond B3 from the great Doug Carn – all players who really up the jazz ante for the record, and make the whole thing sound even deeper than most of Younge's other recordings. Titles include "Distant Mode", "Nancy Wilson, "Down Deep", "Apocaliptico", "Jazz Is Dead", "Hey Lover", "Nao Saia Da Praca", and "Conexao". CD

Def Jam, 1988. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Slick Rick's first solo LP – a hip hop classic, and essential to everyone's collection! MC Ricky D introduced the world to a whole new rap style on Doug E Fresh's "The Show" and by the time this album dropped the world was more than ready for a full LP of his unique flow. The master of storytelling rap delivers the goods on each and every track here, which is more than can be said for most hip hop LPs. We never tire of timeless tracks like "Treat Her Like A Prostitute", "Children's Story", "The Ruler's Back", "Mona Lisa", and "Teenage Love". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Sonny RollinsNewk's Time (75th anniversary edition) ... LP
Blue Note, 1958. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
About as classic as you can get for Sonny Rollins during the 50s – from the cover right down to the incredible solos on the set! The album's got Rollins really stretching out – still not finding the freer trio mode of his Vanguard session, but still bringing in plenty of fresh ideas in both his phrasing and the construction of his tunes – way more than just the roots of his (still excellent) years as a boppish player. The group's nice and loose – with Wynton Kelly on soulful piano, Doug Watkins on bass, and Philly Joe Jones on drums – all able to snap into a groove when needed, but also letting Rollins really lay back into a solo too. Titles include the sublime "Asiatic Raes", plus "Namely You", "Tune Up", "Wonderful Wonderful", and "Blues For Philly Joe". If you've ever needed a record to convince you how great Rollins is, this might just be the one! LP, Vinyl record album

Dave DouglasDizzy Atmosphere ... CD
Greenleaf, 2020. New Copy ... $14.99 15.99
Dave Douglas works here in a group with two trumpets – Dave Adewumi on the other horn in the lead, but playing with a voice that's deeply distinct from the leader! The group's got that sort of fresh approach that seems to make each different record by Douglas a very different project – and the rest of the lineup includes Matt Stevens on guitar, Fabian Almazan on piano, Carmen Rothwell on bass, and Joey Baron on drums – building things up slowly, but in this way that sometimes has them circling the two trumpets, sometimes coming together more directly. The album's got a subtitle of "Dizzy Gillespie at zero gravity" – and oddly, that's a bit of the feel of the record. Titles include "Con Almazan", "Cadillac", "Manteca", "Mondrian", "We Pray", "Pickin The Cabbage", and "See Me Now". CD

✨✧ Hank MobleyHank Mobley Quartet (10 inch LP) ... LP
Blue Note, 1955. New Copy (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Great early material from Hank Mobley – a record that's practically a Jazz Messengers album, given the lineup – and which comes across with the fire and power of that classic group at their start! Mobley's tenor is set tightly in a combo that includes Horace Silver on piano, Doug Watkins on bass, and Art Blakey on drums – just like an early Jazz Messengers group, but without trumpet – and really kicking strongly on the rhythm tip. Mobley's tenor gets some great focus out front – amazing linest hat already show the young Hank as one of the freshest tenor voices of his generation. Titles include "Hank's Prank", "Walkin The Fence", "Just Coolin", and "Avila & Tequila". 2015 Blue Note Authorized Dealer pressing – in celebration of Blue Note's 75th Anniversary – and the indie retailers that support them! ✨✧ SF Jazz CollectiveLive 2008 – 5th Annual Concert Tour – Original Compositions & Works By Wayne Shorter (3CD set) ... CD
SF Jazz, 2008. New Copy 3 CDs ... Out Of Stock
The music of Wayne Shorter seems to be the perfect companion to this edition of the SF Jazz Collective – that special blend of darkness and light, sadness and joy – handled here by a group that includes Joe Lovano on tenor, Dave Douglas on trumpet, Robin Eubanks on trombone, Stefon Harris on vibes, Miguel Zenon on alto, and Renee Rosnes on piano! As with other tribute performances like this from the group, the sound is stunning – clearly the product of many months working together for the show, and developing some of their own strong originals while members also provide fresh arrangements of Wayne Shorter tunes too. The set features versions of "Infant Eyes", "Armageddon", "Yes & No", "Go", "El Gaucho", "Footprints", and "Black Nile" – plus the originals "Aurora Borealis", "Breakthrough", "The Year 2008", and "Secrets Of The Code". SF Jazz CollectiveLive 2007 – 4th Annual Concert Tour – Original Compositions & Works By Thelonious Monk ... CD
SF Jazz, 2007. New Copy 2CD ... Just Sold Out!
Only the fourth year of this amazing all-star group – and they've already got their own sound so strongly in place, they really make some fresh magic with the music of Thelonious Monk! Arrangements of Monk tunes are by different members of the group – pianist Renee Rosnes, trumpeter Dave Douglas, bassist Matt Penman, drummer Eric Harland, tenorist Joshua Redman, and alto saxophonist Miguel Zenon – who work here alongside the vibes of Bobby Hutcherson in some stunning remakes of "Oska T", "I Mean You", "Ugly Beauty", "Bye Ya", "Criss Cross", "Brilliant Corners", and "Bright Mississippi" – handled by the octet in a style that reminds us of some of Monk's late 50s larger group work on Riverside. The set also features a full dose of original compositions – the long "San Francisco Suite", plus "Union", "Lion's Gate", "Life At The End Of The Tunnel", and "Haast Pass". CD

✨✧ SF Jazz CollectiveLive 2009 – 6th Annual Concert Tour – The Works Of McCoy Tyner Plus New Compositions ... CD
SF Jazz, 2009. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
The SF Jazz collective is a septet here, not the usual octet formation – and they play with a really strong all-star lineup that maybe makes for some darker corners than usual! The group lead off with the compositions of McCoy Tyner, often given very fresh arrangements, and mix in a range of their own originals too – handled by a lineup that includes Dave Douglas on trumpet, Joe Lovano on tenor, Renee Rosnes on piano, Robin Eubanks on trombone, Matt Penman on bass, and Eric Harland on drums. You can definitely hear the influence of Douglas and Lovano on the sound, especially at this point in their careers – and titles include "Aisha", "Fly With The Wind", "Three Flowers", "Sycamore", "Yes We Can/Victory Dance", "Migrations", "Consensus", and "Four By Five".
