Graham Central StationAin't No Bout-A-Doubt It ... CD
Warner, 1975. Used ... $7.99
One of the high points of Larry Graham's career – a hard-jamming set of guitar-based funk that forever put Graham Central Station on the map! There's a virtuosity to the record that's really stunning – bass, guitar, and drums all dropping into place magically alongside one another – while still managing to come across with a relaxed soulful approach that definitely makes this one more heavy funk than later years. Titles include "The Jam", "It's Alright", "I Can't Stand The Rain", "It Ain't Nothin But A Warner Bros Party", and "Easy Rider". CD

Mississippi, Early 90s. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Timeless blues work from Boyd Rivers – played on both acoustic and electric guitar, but with a classic spirit that stretches back to the days of the delta! The recordings are from the early 90s, but done in a way that feels like they're from decades before – clear enough to bring out the best tones in Rivers' guitar and vocals, yet with a spare, stripped-down vibe that shows little change in the evolution of the blues over the 20th century! Titles include "Won't It Be Grand", "I Want To Be At The Meeting", "Get Away Jordan", "That Fire Shed In My Bones", "You Can't Make Me Doubt", "Church House Rock", and "When The World Seems Cold". Steve ArringtonDown To The Lowest Terms – The Soul Sessions ... LP
Stones Throw, 2021. New Copy 2LP ... $27.99 29.99
Steve Arrington's got a long long legacy in soul music – one that goes back to his late 70s work on Slave – but he also sounds completely contemporary here, working in collaboration with a whole host of producers who were no doubt influenced by his creations of the past, and help Arrington find a whole new vibe in his music! Tunes are often spare, and served up in a blend of vocals, beats, keyboards, and guitar – yet all elements are given some cool, crispy twists and turns through a host of hip hop elements and other contemporary modes – but all at a level that only seems to bring new live to Arrington's music, and not overwhelm it. The set features work from Mndsgn, Gifted & Blessed, J Rocc, Knxwledge, Devin Morrison, and others – and titles include "Love Knows", "Keep Dreamin", "Soulful I Need That In My Life", "Make A Difference", "Joys Of Love", "It's Alright", "Make Ya Say Yie", "You're Not Ready", "Good Mood", and "Work On It". David BowieHeroes (180 gram pressing) ... LP
RCA/Parlophone, 1977. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99 26.99
One of the three great collaborations between David Bowie and Brian Eno – and possibly the ultimate statement from his years in Berlin! The album's got some tunes that still show some of the guitar power of the early 70s Bowie – but it's also got some of the beautiful spacier moments brought forward on Low – and which are every bit the Brian Eno of Another Green World. The balance is beautiful – stark and dark on one half, then airy and spacious on the next – handled without any sense of gimmickry, and a bold mainstream experiment that still resonates strongly today. Titles include "Beauty & The Beast", "Joe The Lion", "Heroes", "Sons Of The Silent Age", "Blackout", "V-2 Schneider", "Sense Of Doubt", "Moss Garden", "Neukoln", and "The Secret Life Of Arabia". Trost (Austria), 2015. New Copy ... $17.99 19.99
Late live work from saxophone legend Peter Brotzmann – and music that shows that he was still burning brightly, even in the final decade of his life! The set was recorded in 2015, and no doubt gets a lot of its energy from the freewheeling drums of Paal Nilssen-Love, who is very much a monster on the kit – really reaching out with that bold, non-stop energy he always seems to have – although also, at points, exhibiting some of his more sensitive, tentative qualities as well. Brotzmann blows a range of horns – bass saxophone, tarogato, and contra-alto clarinet – and titles include "Strain My Taters", "Bubble Butt Trouble", "Frozen Nose Melting Toes", "Boot Lickin Boots Kicking", and "Ye Gods & Little Fishes". Brute ForceBrute Force ... LP
Embryo/Cosmic Rock, 1970. New Copy (reissue)... $24.99 28.99
The one and only album by this righteous funky combo from Ohio! Although Brute Force were an American group of the late 60s, they've got a sound that brings in traces of the African rhythms that were bubbling under at the time – similar to some of the best London groups of the post-colonial years, like Cymande, Demon Fuzz, or Asiko. There's often a jagged and jazzy style on the bottom of the grooves, topped with brighter horn flourishes, and combined with a vocal approach that has some slight folksy touches – very hip, progressive, and as righteous as you'd expect from the cover! Sonny Sharrock sits in on some tracks, and the titles include "Some Kind Of Approval", "Doubt", "Ye Le Wa", "Do It Right Now", "The Deacon", and "Monster". LP, Vinyl record album

Cab CallowayCotton Club Revue 1958 ... CD
Gone/Warner (Japan), 1958. Used ... $24.99
A really unusual later album from Cab Calloway – a set recorded for the mostly R&B label Gone, and done in a style that update the Calloway sound from previous years at the Cotton Club! The overall presentation is strongly jazz-based – with arrangements by Eddie Barefield, who also conducts – and Calloway's still got that wonderful voice fully in place – that way of singing loud, clear, and with a sinister edge that was no doubt a big influence on later styles to come. Titles include "Sinful", "Sweeter Than Sweet", "Beginnin Of Sinnin", "Never Had It So Good", "Don't Worry Bout Me", and "Copper Colored Girl". CD

Princeton University, 2020. New Copy ... $8.99 24.95
Without a doubt, one of the most striking presidential portraits ever is that done by Kehinde Wiley of Barack Obama – the fantastic image that graces the cover of this book, which also looks at the portrait of Michelle Obama by Amy Sherald! Both paintings have the vivid energy that their subjects possess – and the choice of painters by the family is part of the amazing legacy they left behind after eight too-short years in the White House. This book looks at the process of creating those paintings, their impact, and the artists behind them – in a series of essays by Dorothy Moss, Taina Caragol, Richard Powell, and Kim Sajet – all illustrated by many full color images as well. The book also has the transcript from the unveiling of the portraits – and the hardcover volume is 139 pages in all. Book

Vaya/Craft, 1975. New Copy (reissue)... $26.99 28.99 On March 14, 2025
A classic collaboration between Celia Cruz and Johnny Pacheco – one that uses the rootsier sounds of Pacheco's tumbao group to further focus the energy of Celia's vocals! The record's got a solid, cohesive feel that makes it easily one of the best Celia Cruz sessions of the 70s – a focus that no doubt comes from the sharp arrangements by Louie Ramirez, Bobby Valentin, Johnny Pacheco, and Papo Lucca – the latter of whom plays piano in Pacheco's group on the record. Charlie Rodriguez plays tres on a number of tracks, further enforcing the roosty element of the music – and titles include "Cuala", "Oriza Eh", "La Sopa En Botella", "No Aguanto Mas", "Rico Changui", and "Ni Hablar". FunkadelicLet's Take It To The Stage ... LP
Westbound, 1975. Very Good Gatefold ... $39.99
A tasty little album from Funkadelic – one that has Bootsy Collins joining the group, and really hitting the unique approach that would become the definitive P-Funk groove! And although tracks are shorter and even more focused, there's still a fair bit of guitar in the set – keeping the trademark Funkadelic sound in place, to set them aside from the growing horn-heavy Parliament groove. Yet in both groups' work at the time, there's a growing emphasis on the rhythms at the bottom – a pulling up of the basslines in a way that was no doubt influenced by Bootsy's presence, and which would have a key influence on the sound of funk for years to come! Includes the massively infectious funk track "Get Off Your Ass and Jam", plus "Let's Take It To The Stage", "Be My Beach", "Baby I Owe You Something Good", "The Song Is Familiar", "No Head No Backstage Pass", "Atmosphere", "Stuffs & Things", and "Better By the Pound". Homewood/Sacred Bones, 1976. New Copy (reissue)... $19.99 24.99
One of the coolest, moogiest records we've ever heard from Mort Garson – and that's saying a lot, given that the man gave us the Wozzard Of Iz and a host of moog-based astrological records too! The album's billed as "mood music especially composed to aid the growing of your plants" – and while we doubt that claim, it's more than groovy enough without any herbaceous activity at hand – these cool keyboard lines that are often sweetly tuneful, but nicely tripped-out too – played by one of the best cats to really grab hold of the moog right at the start of its great musical run! Titles include "A Mellow Mood For Maidenhair", "You Don't Have To Walk A Begonia", "Concerto For Philodendron & Pothos", "Ode To An African Violet", and "Plantasia". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Hot ChocolateRemixes & Rarities (3CD set) ... CD
Cherry Pop (UK), Late 70s. New Copy 3CD ... $18.99 24.99
A wonderful collection of work from the legendary Hot Chocolate – one of the greatest British pop bands of the 70s – and one with a unique sound that was equal parts rock, funk, and soul! Lead singer Erroll Brown is pictured on the cover – and his unique vocal approach is what really makes most of these songs so great – especially matched with the group's talent for a snapping midtempo rhythm, and fuzzy guitar that seems to be a funky evolution from the glam generation! This set's kind of a "better than best of" – in that it's full of hits from the group, but often in these varied mixes, some of which were done a decade after the recording – as a way of keeping the group's legacy going strong over in the UK – mixed with some other lesser-known tracks that are really great too. 3CD set features 36 tracks in all – with songs that include "So You Win Again", "West End Of Park Lane", "The Girl Is A Fox", "I've Got You On My Mind", "Gimme Some Of Your Lovin", "Bed Games", "It's My Birthday", "Night To Remember", and "Robot Love" – plus remixes/alternates that include "Every 1's A Winner (12" version)", "Going Through The Motions (12" version)", "Mindless Boogie (ext version)", "You'll Never Be So Wrong (12" mix)", "Every 1's a Winner (ext groove mix)", "Heartache No 9 (ext rmx)", "You Sexy Thing (ext replay mix)", "No Doubt About It (tequila mix)", "You Sexy Thing (winner 12" mix", "Are You Getting Enough Happiness (12" promo)", "You Sexy Thing (Ben Liebrand rmx)", "Heaven Is In The Backseat Of My Cadillac (DD convertible mix)", and even a long "Megamix" of hits! ✨✧ Kimiko Kasai with Herbie HancockButterfly ... CD
Columbia (Japan), 1979. Used ... Just Sold Out!
A legendary pairing of talents – as Japanese jazz singer Kimiko Kasai works alongside Herbie Hancock – in a setting that's very much on the soul side of the spectrum! Both Herbie and Kimiko started out with a straighter jazz sound in their early years – but by the end of the 70s, they'd both picked up plenty of influences from R&B – although Kasai's work was largely unknown to American audiences. This set is one of those rare Japanese-only sessions by Herbie at the time – a few of which have gotten released overseas as the decades have gone on – and Hancock is in his best keyboard groove, and also gets additional help on the keys from Webster Lewis – who no doubt brings a strong soul current to the music too. Other musicians include Bennie Maupin on soprano and tenor sax, Paul Jackson on bass, Ray Obeido on guitar, Alphonse Mouzon on drums, and Bill Summers on percussion – in a groove that's like a tighter take on the sound of The Headhunters. Kimiko sings in English – and titles include some great versions of Herbie Hancock tunes – including "Maiden Voyage", "Sunlight", "Butterfly", "Tell Me A Bedtime Story", and "Harvest Time" – plus a great take on Stevie Wonder's "As", the cut "Head In The Clouds", and the funk-steeped opener "I Thought It Was You". Emporium/Everland (Austria), 1974. New Copy ... $26.99 29.99
A wicked bit of funk from Ghana – a record that's as amazing and wonderful as it is rare! The set's one of the best African 70s rarities we've ever heard – filled with massive grooves that offer up a take on funk that's far different than American grooves – but which also comes across with instrumentation that's not as familiarly Ghanian either! There's lots of nicely fuzzy organ in the mix, tight rhythms, and a trippy production style that no doubt comes from the quality of the original studio – but which serves to give some of the best cuts a really sinister edge – a bit like Cymande at their best. Titles include "Dracular Dance", "No Man Is Born To Suffer", "Moving World", "Groovy Love", "Wale Fobite", "Kelenkye Beat", and "Jungle Music". LP, Vinyl record album

You might recognize the voice of MidnightRoba from her work on Attica Blues many years ago – and it's great to have Roba El-Essawy back on record, working here with a mature style that opens up a whole new side of her talents! The production is lush, in a way that has all these sonic elements swirling together with a very cosmic vibe – sometimes upbeat, but often midtempo, which seems to really suit Roba's vocals wonderfully – and allow them to hit this richness that's very unique, with a lower-end range that really emphasizes her uniqueness as a singer! Jason Moran guests on the tune "Bitter Boy" – and other tracks include "Time Heals", "Golden Seams", "Self Doubt", "Don't Let This Change", "Shelter Within", and "Safe With Me". Lee MorganCity Lights (RVG remaster edition) ... CD
Blue Note, 1957. Used ... Just Sold Out!
One of Lee Morgan's most sparkling sessions from the early years – a record that already shows a sense of depth and imagination that would take Lee way beyond simple hardbop solo work! There's a sensitivity here that owes something of a debt to Clifford Brown, yet which is much more modernist overall – touched, no doubt, by a set list that features tunes by Gigi Gryce and Benny Golson, and played in a spirit that's similar to the blend of soul jazz and modernism that both of those players were carving out at the time. Morgan's bandmates for the record include George Coleman on tenor and alto, Curtis Fuller on trombone, Ray Bryant on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Art Taylor on drums – all in tight formation, but with a sense of relaxed and easy flow that's rare, even in a Blue Note of this vintage! Titles include "You're Mine You", "Just By Myself", "Kin Folks", "City Lights", and "Tempo De Waltz". CD

Contemporary, 1969. Very Good+ ... $19.99
A really bold little record from Phineas Newborn – one that certainly has some of the bluesy overtones that you might guess from the title, but which also has other numbers that really leap along the keys! There's a fluid beauty here that really has Newborn at the top of his game – still drenched in the sounds of his Memphis roots, but also picking up some of the looser, livelier styles of the time of this recording – helped, no doubt, by the work of Elvin Jones on drums and Ray Brown on bass. Titles include "Rough Ridin", "Brentwood Blues", "Come Sunday", "Little Niles", and "Stay On It". LP, Vinyl record album

Prestige/OJC, 1961. Used ... $14.99
A rare pre-Blue Note gem from pianist Duke Pearson – originally recorded in 1961 for the short-lived Jazzline label! The set appears here in a short-lived 1969 incarnation from Prestige – issued, no doubt, to cash in on Pearson's growing fame at Blue Note – and the record's a good fit for the label, as it's got a tight, right, and in-the-pocket soul jazz energy that's really great! Pearson's leading a group that includes Freddie Hubbard on trumpet, Pepper Adams on baritone, and the lesser-known Willie Wilson on trombone – a great player, but one who was mostly a friend of Pearson, and only ever made this one appearance on record! Tracks have a lively well-crafted sound – mixing modern and soul jazz idioms nicely – and titles include "Lex", "Blues For Alvina", "Apothegm", and "Minor Mishap". CD

Cameo, 1967. Near Mint- ... $19.99 29.99
The second album from Question Mark & The Mysterians – even more obscure than the first, and harder and heavier too! There's an energy and brashness here that's undeniable – like the group have really gotten their isht together – and found a way to push past the simple melodic groove of their debut! All the best elements from that set are still in place – the cool organ, Question Mark's almost-conversational vocals – and the garagey production that makes the guitars sound great. But there's also a focus that comes through strongly – like the combo were really finding the right way to interact – no doubt after a string of club performances on the strength of their singles! A massive bucket of breaks from drummer Karriem Riggins – served up here in a drums-only entry to the Madlib Library Series, at a level that might well make it the funkiest of the bunch! There's definitely some slight effects used here from time to time – maybe some edits too – but the core energy of the set comes from Karriem's rock-solid work on the drum kit, which you'll no doubt recognize from his wonderful contributions to many other records – although none have ever had the lean approach as this one! Parlophone, 1984. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99 24.99
A pivotal set from the Britpop years of the early 80s – a record that came out amidst the commercial classics of some of the group's contemporaries – but one that really starts to hint at the special direction that Mark Hollis and Talk Talk would take in years to come! Sure, the tunes are catchy – and yes, Hollis has a voice that resonates with lots of other UK acts who were making waves at the time – but there's more complexity going on here, and both a lyrical and sonic depth to the record that really transcends the big chart hits it gave the world, and which have made the record a real lasting classic over the decades! You'll no doubt know the cuts "It's My Life" and "Such A Shame" – but taken as a whole, the record's got a sense of perfection that's wonderful – on titles that also include "Renee", "Tomorrow Started", "Call In The Night Boy", "Does Caroline Know", "It's You", "The Last Time", and "Dum Dum Girl". Mode, 1957. Very Good+ ... $19.99 39.99
A rare all-instrumental outing from Bobby Troup – best known for his work as a singer and songwriter at the time! But like a number of Bobby's contemporaries on the male vocal scene, Troup was equally well-skilled at handling the keys – no doubt because he'd frequently be called to accompany himself when trying out a tune at session, or during a more intimate live performance. Here, the group's a larger one than might be expected – a septet that features horn work by Bob Enevoldsen, Stu Williamson, Ted Nash, and Ronnie Lang – all of whom are featured in some nicely arranged passages, but who often step aside to let Bobby have plenty of space to solo. And we've gotta admit, we like Troup's vocals so much we wouldn't expect his piano to be that entertaining – but he really sparkles with a lightly playful approach on tracks that include "Always", "I See Your Bass Before Me", "It Never Entered My Mind", and "Stella By Starlight". This album was Larry Young's first for Blue Note – and it's a mindblowing batch of tunes that push the organ into realms that had never been heard of in jazz. Young's got a real penchant for a modal groove – no doubt inspired by his friend and sometimes collaborator John Coltrane – and he's working here with a totally hip group that includes Sam Rivers, Grant Green, and Elvin Jones. The tunes are amazing – dancing with delight as they push the envelope, but never go too far to get overindulgent – and the album's filled with classics that include Green's wonderful composition "Plaza De Toros", plus originals by Young like "Tyrone", "Backup", and "Ritha". Flying Dutchman/BGP (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... $11.99 19.99
Funky nuggets galore – and a fair bit of righteous numbers too – all brought together in celebration of one of the hippest record labels of the early 70s! Flying Dutchman was around for just a bit over five years – yet during that time, the label recorded all sorts of really wonderful music – a mixture of jazz, soul, funk, and other styles that really helped push the envelope at the time – as it took the torch from older labels like Impulse or Prestige, and really continued a big wave of new sounds and groovily experimental music! You'll no doubt recognize some of the cuts here – but the collection does a great job of digging deeper past the Flying Dutchman hits – bringing together some real surprises that showcase the way that the company was trying so many cool things at once, and creating music that's still the stuff of legends many years later. Titles include "Head Start" by Bob Thiele Emergency, "Peaceful Man" by Esther Marrow, "Mama Soul" by Harold Alexander, "Soulful Strut" by Steve Allen, "Heavy Soul Slinger" by Pretty Purdie, "Echoes" by Leon Thomas, "See Saw Affair" by Cesar, "Expansions" by Lonnie Liston Smith, "Bolivia" by Gato Barbieri, "125th Street & 7th Ave" by Oliver Nelson, "Whitey On The Moon" by Gil Scott-Heron, "Echoes" by Leon Thomas, and "Lament For John Coltrane (take 1)" by Bob Thiele. Marvin Gaye's last album for Motown – and a wonderful cap to a great run of sexy soul for the 70s – filled with great mellow grooves that rival the genius of his earlier work in the decade! There's a glowing, slow-burning feel to some of the best numbers here – a vibe that's right out of the I Want You era, with touches of Let's Get It On too. But there's also a slightly more mature approach too – a bit more cautious, even when confident – no doubt informed by the struggles of his Here My Dear album, which also echoes somewhat in this set. The record's more proof that even when not coming across with a classic hit, Marvin's still very much at the top of his game – an artist that stands head and shoulders above his contemporaries – with none of the too-commercial or too-dated modes that held other folks back! As you might guess from the title, things aren't as tightly structured as on some of Benny's more arranged albums of the period – and he opens up wonderfully in a small group setting – playing in a beautifully confident tone, but with a slightly raspy edge – cutting, changing, and swinging perfectly in lines that are masterfully crafted, yet full of raw emotion. The group's a thoughtful quartet, and includes Tommy Flanagan on piano, Ron Carter on bass, and Art Taylor on drums – and tracks that inlcude "Sock Cha", "Shades Of Stein", "Just By Myself", and "Just In Time". New Values finds Iggy a real peak point for edgy, yet accessible songwriting – a talent he no doubt honed in the preceding few years of working with David Bowie. The production is great here, too – with the rugged guitar and bugged out vocals you'd expect from Iggy, but with some cool little synthesizer touches here and there, that actually sound fresh to this day – as opposed to new wave-y. We value this one as highly as just about any Iggy Pop album. Sublime early Stax work from Sam & Dave – the kind of record that forever changed the way the male voice was used in group soul music! The rhythms on the tunes are totally raw – bass, drums, and guitar that are kind of fused into a dirty funky bottom that proves a perfect foil for the leaping vocal mode of the pair – a chunky sort of blend that was one of the boldest new sounds to come out of the Memphis scene of the time. Sam & Dave also get some key support here from another important duo – that of Isaac Hayes & David Porter, who wrote a good portion of tracks on the set, and were no doubt instrumental in the groove! A killer, and the sort of record that changed male duet (and group) singing for generations to come! Rock solid work from this legendary Polish group of the 70s – a combo who mixed together equal parts fusion and prog, but all with a tightness that still beats the work of most of their contemporaries! Had SBB been working on our side of the Iron Curtain, they no doubt would have rocked plenty of bedrooms and shag-carpeted vans back in the day – but that lack of Western fame is what makes a record like this so great overall, as it's really free from cliches or too familiar moments – and these guys never seem like they're worried about aiming for the charts or getting a gold record – which allows them to keep things plenty loose and free overall! There's loads of razor-sharp lines from both of the guitarists, plenty of keyboards and well – and some occasional vocals that always seem to take second place next to the group's full-on approach to instrumentation. 2CD set features loads of music – and titles include "Hung Under", "Spectrum", "Going Away", "Freedom With Us", "Heavy Equipment", "Away Away", and "First Green Leaves". The biggest record that Al Stewart ever cut – as you no doubt know from the oft-played title track – but a set that also stands as a great testament to all the many years he'd been crafting fine music before fully getting the recognition he deserved! Stewart's got a way with words that's like few of his contemporaries – maybe a bit like Donovan, with whom he shares a similar vocal approach – and also a clear early love of Bob Dylan, yet an immediate evolution past that influence – so that the whole thing is very much in a world of Al's own, with some slight 70s mainstream production, but not enough to soften the music into more mainstream AOR – despite the fame of the hit. Titles include, of course, "Year Of The Cat", plus "One Stage Before", "Flying Sorcery", "Broadway Hotel", "Lord Grenville", "If It Doesn't Come Naturally Leave It", and "Midas Shadow". CD

A really unique album from Peter Brotzmann – as you've no doubt probably already guessed from the name of the group! The record has Brotzmann working together with a large group of improvising stars – including John Zorn, Louis Sclavis, JD Parran, and Tony Coe – all of whom play clarinet on the session, next to Brotzmann, who also plays a bit of tenor and tarogato as well. The album's a unique one-time live performance – and the group's expanded by Toshinori Kondon on trumpet, and Hannes Bauer and Alan Tomlinson on trombone – as well as William Parker on bass and Tony Oxley on drums. The sound is quite striking – initially in the introspective mode of some of the later FMP work, but also opening up tremendously as the album moves through its one long composition – an original by Brotzmann, entitled "What A Day". Some of the most cooking work of the 70s from Dexter Gordon – and that's saying a lot, given all his overseas sessions and late-life work for Columbia Records! The format here is different than both of those, though – in that it's both a sharp hardbop set, with a real back-to-basics vibe – but also one that has much more of an overall group feel, instead of some of the longer-form solo vehicles that Gordon recorded for Steeplechase Records. There's definitely a blowing session vibe – tracks are long, and there's multiple soloists who each get extended time in the spotlight – but there's also a careful sense of structure, brought to the record no doubt by producer Don Schlitten – who'd handled classic dates in the past for Prestige. The group features both Gordon and Al Cohn on tenors, Blue Mitchell and Sam Noto on trumpets, Barry Harris on piano, Sam Jones on bass, and Louis Hayes on drums – a hell of a lineup that really makes magic on "Lady Bird", "How Deep Is The Ocean", "True Blue", "On The Trail", "Allen's Alley", and "Silver Blue". The package features an insert with notes on the music, and a nice hand-assembled cover – and titles include "He Got His Eyes On You" by Brother Sidney Harris, "Jesus Is Living Today" by Linston Triplett, "I Heard A Prayer (parts 1 & 2)" by Elijah Thurston, "He Will Fix It" by Sam Williams, "All Wrap Up In One" by Otis Wright, and "Send The Holy Ghost" by Brother Clark & His Trio. ✨✧ Art Ensemble Of ChicagoDreaming Of The Masters Suite – Music Inspired By & Dedicated To John Coltrane ... CD
DIW (Japan), 1990. Used ... Out Of Stock
Possibly the best entry in Art Ensemble Of Chicago's Dreaming Of The Masters series – as the set's devoted to the work of John Coltrane, and has a really unified feel throughout! About half the tunes are Coltrane compositions, and the rest are originals by the Art Ensemble – done with fluid, open sounds that are less a strict tribute to Coltrane, than an expression of the ideas in jazz he allowed! As you might guess, the reeds play strongly in the sound of the set – and both Joseph Jarman and Roscoe Mitchell hit some great moments on the Coltrane tunes especially – notes that are quite different than any Trane might have played, but which he would no doubt appreciate in his music. Titles include "Dreaming Of The Masters", "Impressions", "Spiritual", "Naima", "Song For Atala", and "Go Head". CD

Modern/Ace (UK), Late 40s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A wonderful compilation the late 40s Modern recordings of piano player, singer and all around musical pioneer Hadda Brooks – with all the tracks from the original Queen Of The Boogie 78s package – and 18 additional tracks from the period! Hadda is a lovely singer, and the set has a number of sweet vocal numbers, but her most lasting impact is no doubt her easygoing, but masterful boogie piano playing. Fittingly, there's a huge number of instrumental treasures here, and it's really tough to imagine a lot of the great R&B and 50s rock and roll piano taking hold if trailblazers like Hadda Brooks didn't get the ball rolling! Includes "Juke Box Boogie", "Bully Wully Boogie", "Boogie At The Bandstand", "Night Life", "Sleepy Time Gal", "Humoresque Boogie", "Strollin' 'N' Rollin'", "Basin Street Blue", "Moonglow", "743 Blues", "Hungara (Gypsy)", "Greig's Concerto Boogie In A Minor", "Stardust" and more. 24 tracks in all – a solid dozen of which were recorded for Modern in the late 40s, but were never before released!

A long overdue overview of the brief 90s heyday for the jazzy hip hop grooves of Digable Planets – featuring the best tracks from Reachin' and Blowout Comb and a few b-sides/rarities! Now that the Digables are back together and no doubt tempted to record (as of late '05) it's as good a time as ever to revisit the classic era. The Digables brought a colorful, expressionistic approach to the jazz-embracing hip hop of the time that few others approached with such loopy verve. If you don't already have the above mentioned albums, this set is a near-perfect encapsulation of their unique charm! 13 tracks in all: "Dedicated", "Nickel Bags", "Jettin'", "Where I'm From (remix and LP version)", "Dog It", "Rebirth Of Slick (Cool Like Dat)", "Dial 7 (Axioms Of Creamy Spies)", "Graffiti", "9th Wonder: Blackitolism (Elaine Brown mix)" and more. In spite of their name, Jurassic 5 deliver thoroughly new school hip hop on their debut EP, but with an eye over their shoulder to the old school sound of the blueprint group rap of groups like Treacherous Three and Funky Four + 1. Cut Chemist and DJ Nu-Mark keep the production nice and funky, but steer clear of the repetitive sound of that era, and MC's Chali 2na, Zaakir, Marc 7even, and Akil do a nice job of updating the old school 4-MC rhyming style. Johnny Thunders, David Johansen and the boys reinvented the wheel with the of wildly hedonist glam skronk spun on this still incredible debut record. Both records they made for Mercury are incredible, but this is the bonafide masterpiece. It's a classic purely on a primal rock 'n' roll level, but it's also one of rock's greatest examples of style equaling substance! Proof that jazz can work with the same sort of supergroup energy as classic rock – especially when the overall sound is as rock-heavy as this! The album presents live material recorded in celebration of Klaus Doldinger's 20 years in music – and although issued as part of his Passport run for Atlantic Records, the album's much more of an all-star jamming affair – with guest work from progressive jazz luminaries like Volker Kriegel, Alexis Korner, Pete York, and Brian Auger – plus American tenorist Johnny Griffin, almost an odd choice for this sort of a record, but a surprisingly good fit – and no doubt chosen because of his work with some of the players in the MPS scene of the time! Tracks are a bit more jazzy than some of the other Passport work – although still quite jamming, with a rock-propelled bottom – and titles include "Freedom Jazz Dance", "Handmade", "Lemuria's Dance", "Rockport", "Rock Me Baby", and "Schirokko". The Wicked Pickett takes his groove up to Philly – and comes up with a whole new sound in the process – a raw new style for the 70s, and one that's almost even more compelling than his Muscle Shoals groove! The album was recorded at the early Sigma Sound studios in Philly – and features arrangements from Bobby Martin, Lenny Pakula, and Roland Chambers – all artists who really help bring in a northern vibe to Pickett's music, yet still let those amazingly raw vocals do their thing! In a way, it's this mix of raw and smooth that almost sets the scene for Philly International gems to come a few years later – especially since a lot of the tunes are penned by Gamble & Huff – and instrumentation is provided by Thom Bell on organ, Norman Harris and Bobby Eli on guitars, Ronnie Baker on bass, Earl Young on drums, and Vince Montana on vibes and percussion. Titles include "Days Go By", "Run Joey Run", "Help The Needy", "Don't Let The Green Grass Fool You", "Ain't No Doubt About It", "Come Right Here", and the classic 2-part track "Get Me Back On Time, Engine Number 9". This CD represents the first full length presentation of the film's soundtrack – a long-overdue masterpiece that steps off the jazzier modes used in Italian films of the early 60s, touched by some of the more dynamic production and arrangement styles that were creeping in later in the decade – all served up over short, sweet tracks that dance with delight and drama throughout! There's even a bit of the British and American spy modes of the time creeping into the mix – no doubt a way of highlighting the "international crime" reputation of lead character Kriminal. Nice 80s digital dub era grooves from Sly & Robbie! For years, We'd back and forth on how we feel about Bill Laswell's slick modern production – but we've really come around on it more recent years, especially considering how influential the 80s style turned out to be in post-millennium music, be reggae or just about any other popular genre. That said, we've never doubt Sly & Robbie, so in the grand scheme of things, this album always boiled down to a winner. Like a lot of mid 80s Material productions, this one pulls in an all star cast to lend a hand to the Rhythm Twins, including Bernie Worrell, Herbie Hancock, Wally Badaru, Manu Dibango, Afrika Bambaata, Bernard Fowler, Mike Hampton, Doug E Fresh and even Bob Dylan. For many folks, this is the first truly great album from Sonic Youth – the first in which the group found any kind of a groove at all! Sonic Youth had been sputtering around the New York art punk scene since the early 80s, but things didn't really come together until this work of aggressively fractured genius hit the streets in '86. New drummer Steve Shelley's arrival brought a solid backdrop to Thurston Moore's and Lee Renaldo's "Sister Ray" worshipping electric squall, and it made a world of difference. The standout is "Expressway To Yr Skull", one of the great underground rock songs of the 80s – one that had the group working what could almost be called a melodic style, albeit one filled with noisy clatter. Arguably the point where Sonic Youth stopped started making some of the most interesting and rewarding indie rock of all time! A treasure trove of late 60s southern soul from the great Bettye Swann – 22 tunes cut for Fame Records between 1968 and 1970 after she jumped from the indie Money Records! Sadly, the move didn't turn Bettye into the major star the label no doubt expected to arise – and these fantastic tracks were largely unappreciated at the time. This release marks the very first worthy issue of most of this material, thanks to Honest Jon's – who did a similarly wonderful job rescuing some of the best material ever recorded by Bettye's contemporary Candi Staton! There's an achingly great southern soul feel to these tunes, which range from fragile soul ballads with sweet harmonies to poundingly righteous stompers. The feel is just loose enough, with roomy arrangements that leave plenty of space for Bettye's sweet vocals, but still with the ability to tighten up and pound at the crack of a whip! Masterful lost soul – and a joy to experience with a reverent reissue! Tracks include "Don't You Ever Get Tired (Of Hurting Me?)", "I'm Lonely For You", "Don't Touch Me", "Little Things Mean A Lot", "No Faith No Love", "Ain't That Peculiar", "Tell It Like It Is", "Today I Started Loving You Again" and lots more!
