That's the great Dootsie Williams pictured on the cover – one of the leading lights on the recording scene in LA during the 50s – thanks to a big run of indie records on his legendary Dootone label! Williams had a key role in showcasing talent in the city of angels at the time – and recorded jazz, comedy, and blues – but perhaps made his greatest contribution in the world of doo wop – as his label was one of the best to capture the up and coming groups on his city's scene. There's plenty of great vocal group numbers here, plus a few other styles as well – in a set of 22 tracks that includes "Flee Oo Wee" by The Calvanes, "Please Mr Junkman" by Cleve Duncan & The Penguins, "Speedin" and "Buick 59" by Vernon Green & The Medallions, "Boogie Woogie Teenage" and "I Got Tore Up" by Don Julian & The Meadowlarks, "Wet Back Hop" and "Tonky Honk" by Chuck Higgins, "My Girl" by Charles McCullough & The Silks, "Guided Missiles" by The Cufflinx, "Jump & Hop" by The Romancers, "Let Me Cry" by Willie Headen, and "Be Fair" by The Pipes. Don Julian & The Meadowlarks —
Heaven & Paradise ... CD Dootone/Ace (UK), Mid 50s. Used ...
Out Of Stock
A sweet set of vocal group heaven from the young Don Julian – working here at the head of his Meadowlarks group – and turning out some very well-crafted doo wop sides from the late 50s LA scene! The material predates Don's stomping soul with The Larks in the 60s – and instead has a great blend of the jazzy riffing R&B styles that were still strong on the west coast scene of the postwar years, and some of the harmony perfection that made a few LA groups like The Meadowlarks a surprisingly strong match for bigger names on the east coast. Ace worked their usual magic with this collection – using original tapes wherever possible, and pulling together a great batch of singles for the Dootone, Dooto, RPM, and Original Sound labels – with titles that include "Untrue", "Devil Or Angel", "Heaven & Paradise", "Love Only You", "I Got Tore Up", "Pass The Gin", "Doin The Cha Cha", "LFMST Blues", "Thrill Me Night & Day", "I Am A Believer", and "Real Pretty Mama". CD
A great little album that's every bit as wonderful as you might expect from its cover – one of the key late 50s sides as a leader from bassist Curtis Counce – cut with a killer lineup that includes Harold Land on tenor sax, Rolf Ericson on trumpet, and Elmo Hope on piano! The set's got the mix of modernism and soul bop leanings you might expect from the players – a really fresh approach that comes off especially well in the non-iconic production style of the Dootone label – a mode that really let the players do their own thing, and break out from some of the tighter restrictions of other LA labels on the scene. Frank Butler completes the quintet on drums – and titles include "The Countdown", "Into The Orbit", "Race For Space", "Move", "Angel Eyes", and "So Nice". LP, Vinyl record album
