Down To The BoneClassic Album Series (From Manhattan To Staten/Urban Grooves/Spread The Word – with bonus tracks) (3CD set) ... CD
Dome (UK), 1996/1998/2001. New Copy 3CD ... $16.99
The first three albums from Down To The Bone – packaged here in a nicely-priced set, with bonus tracks too! First up is From Manhattan To Staten – a record that moves across the boroughs of New York – and which also managed to have a huge impact on the Windy City as well – given that the music of Down To The Bone was perfect for the groove of the Chicago steppers scene in the 90s! The group are a bit jazz, a bit soul, and have this chunky funky rhythm at the bottom that shows their roots in the British scene – maybe a mix of electric jazz modes with inspirations from artists like Soul II Soul or the James Taylor Quartet – taken to a style that's slightly tighter overall. There's a fair bit of programming in the rhythms, mixed with live instrumentation from group members – and titles include the classic "Staten Island Groove", plus "Muesli Brown", "Savour The Flavour", "Brooklyn Heights", "3 Days In Manhattan", "Carlito's Way", "On The Corner Of Darcy Street", and "17 Mile Drive". Urban Grooves is the second album from Down To The Bone – and a set that really continues the vibe of their debut – a mix of programmed funky rhythms and liver jazz instrumentation – all awash in a groove that really helped them cross over big on both sides of the Atlantic! The production is tight, but looser than smooth jazz of the time – and the record's got more than a few strong keyboard and saxophone solos to offset its rhythmic patterns, which often draw heavily from the best styles of the British soul scene in the late 80s and early 90s. Titles include "A Little Touch Of Soul", "Phat City Hustler", "Joy Is A Good Groove", "Bump N Hustle", "To The Bone", "The Zodiac", and "Urban Jazz". Spread The Word is the overlooked third album from Down To The Bone – a set that maybe didn't take the world by storm as much as their first two, but which still has the group very much in fine formation! All the best previous elements are in place here – that strong mix of funky jazz instrumentation with contemporary rhythmic production – almost a blend of some of the funkier club styles of the time with more mainstream fusion, at a level that made these guys both a hit on the dancefloors and for kicking back at the crib! Titles include "The Backburner", "Righteous Reeds", "Sound As A Pound", "Bridgeport Boogie", "The Lowdown", and "Black Choice". 3CD set features all albums in small LP-style jackets – and bonus tracks include "Deja Vu", "Concrete Jungle", "Staten Island Groove (live studio version)", and "Brooklyn Heights (live studio version)". Shaun EscofferyEvergreen ... CD
Dome (UK), 2016. New Copy ... $9.99
Why isn't Shaun Escoffery bigger? He's easily been one of the top soul singers in the world for over a decade – and a record like this should be in everyone's collection! Shaun's always had a cutting edge sound in his music – and this time around, he inflects it with a bit of classic soul too – mixing his 21st Century style with a sound that puts him rock solidly in the territory of Al Green, Marvin Gaye, or Bobby Womack – all artists we wouldn't hesitate to compare Shaun to – given the depth and consistency of his music! The record's a stunner – maybe the one that will finally break Escoffery to a bigger global audience – and even if it doesn't, it's one you'll be loving for years – which we know we will. Titles include "Love Shine Down", "Evergreen", "Healing Me", "When Love Is Gone", "Here Comes The Rain Again", "Lost For Words", "Win Again", and "Teachers". CD

In the tradition of classic UK soundsystem type soul outfits, Full Flava work here with a variety of female vocalists – including Ruby Turner, Beverlei Brown, Fiona Day, Tee, and Donna Gardner – on a tight set of smooth R&B tunes with an approach that's kind of a bridge between chart soul and underground work. Titles include "Unwrap", "Fall", "Chinese Whispers", "Reach Out", "When You Turn Out The Light", "Make You Mine", and "Here We Go Again". CD

Full FlavaMusic Is Our Way Of Life ... CD
Dome (UK), 2007. Used ... $8.99
Full Flava is exploding with talent on this wonderful release – a rich array of female soul singers who include Chantay Savage, Kelli Sae, Carleen Anderson, Donna Gardier, Cee Cee Peniston, Beverlei Brown, and others! The album really takes us back to the best days of the British soul system mode of a decade or two ago – when you'd have a core unit coming up with the grooves, and a shifting array of singers really helping keep things fresh on the top! The range of singers here is totally great – and working with solid, classic-styled backings from Full Flava, they really open up wonderfully – sometimes at a level that's better than work recorded under their own name in recent years. Titles include "Lovin You Is Sweeter Than Ever", "Bad Habit", "The Glow Of Love", "You Make It Heaven", "Was That All It Was", "September", "I Specialize In Love", "Music Is My Way Of Life", and "Too Much Too Late". IncognitoBees & Things & Flowers (UK pressing) ... CD
Dome (UK), 2006. Used ... $2.99
Another amazing set from Bluey and Incognito – one of the few groups who seem to get better and better as the years go by! The title of this album is a line from Roy Ayers' classic "Everybody Loves The Sunshine" – and the group begin the record with an excellent cover version of that tune – really setting the scene for the warmly jazzy grooves to come! Somehow, the sound here seems more "instant classic" than ever before – perfectly recorded, deeply soulful, and filled with just the right balance of 70s styles and contemporary touches to keep things fresh throughout. Vocalists include Jocelyn Brown, Carleen Anderson, and Maysa Leak – and Bluey makes no attempt to hide his love of older music – covering tracks from both the pop and soul side of the spectrum, including "That's The Way Of The World", "Summer In The City", "Tin Man", and "Everybody Loves The Sunshine" – as well as "Always There", which is remade here in a new Incognito version, as is "Still A Friend Of Mine". Other tracks include "Everyday", "Raise", "Crave", and "Deep Waters". CD

LasperanzaSeeds ... CD
Dome (UK), 2019. New Copy ... $7.99
A tight debut from Lasperanza – aka arranger producer Rico Garofalo, who put together the whole set as a tribute to older jazz, funk, and soul that laid the seeds for his own music in recent years! The record has a vibe that's a bit like that strong UK soul tradition started with Incognito, and carried forth by a number of other artists in recent years – with a really strong vision at the core, handled by a musician who's also a maestro in the studio – who then opens the door to a shifting array of singers who really make the record sparkle with a great sense of variety! Lasperanza has sax or flute solos on most tracks, and seems ready to rise up there with the cream of UK soul labels like Dome or Expansion in recent years – and guest singers include Decosta Boyce, Hannah White, LaAerial, Kayleigh O'Neill, Colette Connor, Keni Stevens, and Izzy Chase. Most tracks are remakes of soulful classics, completely changed up – and titles include "Let's Stay Together", "Give Me The Night", "Kilimanjaro", "Under The Moon & Over The Sky", "Early Morning Love", "Working Day & Night", "In The Mood", and "It Should Have Been You". Dome (UK), 2020. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A great little record from the jazzier side of the Incognito universe – work from the excellent Citrus Sun project of Jean-Paul "Bluey" Maunick – done with some of the soulful vocal modes of his famous group, but also a lot stronger focus on the instrumentation – with plenty of room for solos, and maybe the use of vocals that you'd find on an old album by The Crusaders! Matt Cooper provides some excellent keyboards – and the set features vocal appearances from Noel McKoy, Valerie Ettiene, Deborah Bond, and Bluey himself – on titles that include nice remakes of "California Soul" and "Expansions" – plus the originals "Diamond In The Sun", "Amando O Velho Mundo", "Hard Boiled", "Hey Now", and "Stay You" – the last of which is a tribute to Leon Ware! ✨✧ Citrus SunRide Like The Wind ... CD
Dome (UK), 2018. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A fantastic little record from Jean-Paul "Bluey" Maunick – served up by a project with a slightly different vibe than his famous group Incognito – but a sound that's every bit as soulful! There's maybe a bit more jazz in the mix here – a focus even more on the great instrumentalists that Bluey works with – with long keyboard solos from the leader himself, plus trumpet from Dominic Glover, piano from Matt Cooper, guitar from Francisco Sales and Jim Mullen, and some other great contributions too! There's definitely still some vocals on the set – work from Imaani, Joao Caetano, and Natalie Williams – but a good portion of the set is instrumental too. Titles include a great cover of Marcos Valle's "Vontade De Rever Voce", the Harry Whitaker tune "Send Me Your Feelings", and (surprisingly!) the Christopher Cross AOR standard "Ride Like The Wind" – redone here as a beautifully soulful tune. But the best stuff might be the original tunes – including "The Stallion Rides Again", "Calling Mr Wolf", "Refugee", and "All Mine" – plus the longer "Krabi Suite (parts 1 to 5)", which takes up most of the end of the album. Wah Wah (Spain), 1977. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Music as cosmic as the image on the cover – a rare set of electronics from Bernard Xolotl, originally only issued on cassette in a very limited run! The music here is a perfect blend of hypnotic minimalism and electronic mysticism – pre-new age, with none of the goofier trappings of that time – and in a space between the long-form keyboard work of Terry Riley, and some of the more space-oriented electronics coming from the post-prog scenes in Germany and France! The tracks flow beautifully, with a very organic pulse – almost as if Xolotl is tapping into the energy of the universe, and finding a way to communicate it in music. Titles include "Venusian Aurora", "Arpeggios", "Gliding Through The Cosmophonic Dome", "Uranian Sundance", and "Love On The Run". LP, Vinyl record album

Martha High & SpeedometerSoul Overdue ... CD
Freestyle (UK), 2012. Used ... $9.99
The smoking return of Martha High – a singer who worked famously with James Brown during his funk years, but who never got the same shot at full-length fame as Lyn Collins or Marva Whitney! Martha's every bit as great – and although she did cut later records in the disco years, it's only recently that folks have finally discovered the true depths of her talents – as she's returned to the fold with amazing vocals, and strong support from the global funk underground! After a previous set with Shaolin Temple Defenders, Martha breaks out even more strongly here with backing from Speedometer – a UK combo who've played together for years, and are already razor-sharp on their own – making for the perfect sort of groove to restore High to the sound of her years with James Brown. The album's brilliant all the way through – not a rehash of older modes, but a rich union of two very strong talents – coming together in an effort that's definitely greater than the sum of its parts. Titles include "I'd Rather Go Blind", "No More Heartaches", "No Man Worries", "Never Never Love A Married Man", "You Got It", "You Got Me Started", "Dragging Me Down", and "Trouble Man". CD

The hour + set was captured back in 2003, and the players are in fantastic form, sounding like they've worked together for years. They totally roll with a funky vibe, too, not so much on the gritty side of the sound, but with a deft, controlled energy that's phenomenal. Wooten's vibes out from of guitar, sax trumpet, flute, keys, drums and percussion of the mighty Speedometer. We wish we were there! Titles include groovy takes "Open Up JB (Paarty)", plus "Sookie Sookie", "In The Rain", "In The Middle", "Steve's Song", plus Wooten's "Chicango (Chicago Land)", "Monkey Hips & Rice" and more. CD

Four flights up, and still plenty darn funky – thanks to top-shelf work from one of the UK's funkiest combos! Speedometer get better and better with each new record – and this time around, they've risen to the upper level of grooving in the deep funk underground – sitting nicely next to the best from the Daptone, Soul Fire, and Tru Thoughts camp with an approach that's heavy on the drums, filled with funky guitars, and topped with plenty of horns! Vocals are great too – thanks to guest appearances from Ria Currie and Miami soul legend Robert Moore – both of whom really flesh out the tunes wonderfully with their soulful styles. Core instrumentation is as tight as it can be, and it looks like the move to the Freestyle label has really been a great one for the group! One of Roy Ayers' greatest albums of the 70s – a set that tightens up the groove from previous Polydor productions, yet still keeps all the soul intact! The record picks up the style begun with the Mystic Voyage album, and pushes it to some slightly tighter territory – a more focused Roy Ayers sound that's totally great, and which makes the album sparkle wonderfully throughout! All aspects of Roy's talents are perfectly balanced here – his warm vocals and jazzy vibes, his uptempo grooves and mellower rhythms – played to perfection by a hip lineup of players that includes Philip Woo on electric piano, Justo Almario on tenor sax, and Steve Cobb on drums. Edwin Birdsong guests a bit on the record – bringing in a nice edge to a few tunes – the album's got a really unique dark undercurrent, even in smoother moments – that subtle Roy Ayers' approach that's always made him one of our all-time favorite artists. Titles include the wonderful jazz-tinged "Searching", a great midtempo stepper that we really love; the funky break track "The Memory", a righteous number that feels like work from earlier records; the clubby classic "One Sweet Love to Remember"; and the sweet instrumental "Vibrations", which has a mellow kickback feel! David Clayton ThomasDavid Clayton Thomas/Tequila Sunrise/David Clayton Thomas (with bonus track) ... CD
BGO (UK), Early 70s. New Copy 2CD ... $15.99
A trio of solo albums from David Clayton Thomas – packaged here with a bonus track too! First up is the self-titled Columbia set David Clayton Thomas – great early solo work the singer who'd rose to fame as part of Blood Sweat & Tears – stepping out here with a sound that's maybe even more soul-based than his music with that famous group! The set features production from Bobby Colomby, of BS&T – and the groove is somewhat similar, but with less horns, and a lot more riffing guitar, keyboards, and other elements used to bring out some of the funkier currents in David's vocals! A few tracks were recorded in Memphis, with guitar from Steve Cropper – and the record even features some arrangements from Claus Ogerman and Jimmy Giuffre. The set includes a remake of of "Magnificent Sanctuary Band" – with a break at the start that's as funky as the original – and other titles include "We're All Meat From The Same Bone", "Sing A Song", "Don't Let It Bring You Down", "Once Burned", "Stealin In The Name Of The Lord", and a surprisingly great take on the Gram Parsons tune "She". Next is Tequila Sunrise – a fantastic solo album from David Clayton Thomas – and a set that still retains the amazing vocals he brought to Blood Sweat & Tears, but which has a completely different focus overall! Clayton-Thomas wrote almost all the songs on the set – and he works here with a tight core group that features William Smitty Smith on keyboards and arrangements, and plenty of guitar from Danny Kortchmar – both musicians who give the whole record a very strong, tight vibe that makes the whole thing feel like it comes from some hip early 70s group. Titles include "Friday The 13th Child", "My Song", "Last Time That She Cried", "The Face Of Man", "Nobody Calls Me Prophet", and "Fallin By Degrees". Next up is another self-titled album – David Clayton Thomas, from 1973 – with David himself handling arrangements, and doing a mighty nice job – getting plenty of sweet keyboards from William D Smith, and strong lead guitar from Domenic Troiano – both of whom echo the funky rock currents in the music. There's a bit of a Memphis rock vibe to the record at times – and titles include "Small Family", "Professor Longhair", "Harbor Lady", "Harmony Junction", and "When Something Is Wrong With My Baby". Matt DennisWelcome Matt Dennis ... LP
Jubilee, Late 50s. Very Good+ ... $9.99
A lesser-known set from vocalist Matt Dennis – not as well-remembered as his 50s dates for RCA and Kapp, but still pretty darn great nonetheless! Matt's working here with full backings from Sy Oliver – in a set that showcases his talents more as a singer than a songwriter – but which still manages to include a few great Dennis originals. And despite a cover that looks a bit lurid – with Dennis cornering a model inside a hotel room – the overall feel of the record is quite homey and domestic, with tunes that echo images of hearth and family, but often with the kind of nod and a wink which you might expect from Matt's usual approach to a tune. Titles include "Home", "Welcome Mat", "Back In Your Own Back Yard", "By The Fireside", "A Cup Of Coffe A Sandwich & You", "Let's Put Out The Lights", and "Your Family". LP, Vinyl record album
(Stereo black label pressing with deep groove, JGS 1105.)

JafrosaxJafrosax Remix ... CD
Konami Media (Japan), 2004. Used ... $32.99
A selection of remixed groovers from Japan's Jafrosax – most of them pulled from now out of print singles that were all pretty darn expensive in the first place! Jafrosax have a style that's a bit like Sunaga T – mixing together older acoustic jazz elements with a clever dancefloor twist – sometimes hitting a style that's a bit more house oriented overall. The CD features 9 tracks in all, and titles include "In The Morning (Jazztronik reedit)" featuring Vikter Duplaix, "Going To The Sky (Kentaro Takizawa rmx)", "Just Like A Tiger's Eye (Manabu Iwamura 90s mix)" featuring Sana, "Drawn 2 U (Makoto rmx)", and "Rollin (Speedometer rmx)". Modern Jazz Quartet/Milt Jackson QuintetMJQ (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Prestige (Japan), 1952/1954. Used ... $13.99
Nice stuff from the early days of the MJQ – recorded back when Kenny Clarke was still playing drums with the group, and giving them a bit more of a bottom! One side of the record features material recorded from one of the quartet's first sessions – in late 1952, with the tracks "La Ronde", "Vendome", and "Rose Of The Rio Grande". The rest of the record features material by Jackson's group with Horace Silver on piano, Percy Heath on bass, Kenny Clarke on drums, and the obscure Henry Boozier on trumpet. That material's a bit more bop-oriented, and titles include "Opus De Funk", "Buhania", and "Soma". CD

Dona OneteRebujo ... CD
Mais Um Discos (UK), 2019. New Copy ... $9.99
Fast-moving grooves from Dona Onete – a raw-voiced singer who really brings a lot to the music – which often feels like samba turned up a few notches on the speedometer! Rhythms are both from acoustic and electric percussion – moving quickly, but with a pace that never seems to dampen the energy of Onete – a singer whose years of experience really come through in the lyrics! Instrumentation includes strong tropical lines on guitar, a bit of sax, and a huge range of percussion from JP Cavalcante – who even plays a wooden chair at one point. Titles include "Festa Do Turbarao", "Tambor Do Norte", "Balanco Do Acai", "Musa Da Babilonia", "Vem Chamegar", and "Mexe Mexe". CD

Elba RamalhoO Ouro Do Po Da Estrada ... LP
Polysom (Brazil), 2019. New Copy (reissue)... $24.99
Brazilian singer Elba Ramalho is still going strong – and maybe sounding better than ever, partly due to a matured quality in her vocals – which makes things sometimes sound deeper than in the early years! The style here is a mix of older forro elements with more contemporary touches – accordion a bit in the background on more numbers, surrounded by electric elements that emphasize some of the more soulful currents in the music – while the lady herself stands strongly in the spotlight. The set features guest appearances by Ney Matogrosso and Roberta Sa – and titles include "Girassol", "Calcanhar", "Na Areia", "Princesa Domeu Lugar", "Oxente", "Setudo Pode Acontecer", and "O Mundo". Clarence ReidNobody But You Babe (LP sleeve edition) ... CD
Tay-Ster/Traffic, 1969. Used ... $5.99
Don't get this set mixed up with Clarence Reid's album of a similar name on Alston/Atco – as this rare date for the Tayster label is quite different – although it still shares the famous title track! Reid's in perfect rough-edged form here – almost more strongly southern soul overall, with less funky elements in his sound, and a nicely messed-up groove overall! The record clearly carries some party soul elements from the scene that Reid was hitting as Blowfly – but the overall groove is straighter soul overall, and done in a mode that has some gritty guitar on most numbers, and a trio of lovelies backing up Clarence's lead vocals. Titles include "Skunks Hogs & Dogs", "Along Came A Woman", "Heaven Will Welcome You", "I Wish It Were Me", "Let The Soul Sounds Play", "Mark My Word", and "Nobody But You Babe". CD

Lucas SanttanaSem Nostalgia ... LP
Mais Um Discos (UK), 2009. New Copy ... About November 27, 2020
Another bold leap forward for Lucas Santtana – a Brazilian artist who really blows our mind with each new release! It's been a few years since we last heard from Lucas, but it's clear he's been doing plenty during the time – coming up with fresh new ideas, working on some English-based lyrics, and continuing to deepen his role as one of the greatest contemporary musicians working in Brazil! Some of the set echoes the dubbier styles of Lucas' last album – but other bits are more acoustic, and show a whole different sonic aspect in his music – one that almost moves towards the Kassin/Domenico camp, but with a quality that's a bit more personal too – possibly because of the English lyrics on about half of the album's tracks. The guitar is often produced with a weird echoey edge – vaguely metallic, yet still surprisingly warm – and Santtana's vocals have really developed a great sense of feeling over the years. Titles include "Who Can Say Which Way", "Super Violao Mashup", "Amor Em Jacuma", "Ca Pra Nos", "I Can't Live Far From My Music", "Hold Me In", "Natureza #1 Em Mi Maior", "Ripple Of The Water", and "Cira Regina E Nana". ✨✧ Caetano VelosoZii & Zie (Brazilian pressing) ... CD
Universal (Brazil), 2009. Used ... $6.99
Completely compelling work from Caetano Veloso – proof that his genius hasn't faltered at all over the years! The album follows nicely in the format of Veloso's prevous Ce album – with small combo backing, and a stripped-down sound that's light years from what you might expect from an aging artist of his stature – quite edgey at times, and with a youthful vibrancy, and sense of presence that's really amazing! Even when laidback, the tunes have a really powerful sort of quality – one that has Veloso's wonderful vocals right out front, backed by just a bit of guitar, keyboards, bass, and drums. Moreno Veloso co-produced the album with group member Pedro Sa, and the set's got a lot of the energy of his own wonderful work with Kassin and Domenico – although a bit less quirky overall – and titles include "Falso Leblon", "Tarado Ni Voce", "Menina Da Ria", "Lapa", "Diferentemente", "Perdeu", "Sem Cais", and "Por Quem". Caetano, Moreno, Tom, & Zeca VelosoOfertorio Ao Vivo (Brazilian version) ... CD
Universal (Brazil), 2018. New Copy ... $19.99
A fantastic family outing from Caetano Veloso – one that has the legendary Brazilian singer working with his sons Tom, Zeca, and Moreno Veloso! Moreno's probably the one who's best known to American audiences – thanks to his fantastic legacy of sounds with Domenico and Kassin in the +2 trio – but the approach here is quite different than those records, and maybe has the warm intimacy of Caetano in some of his best stripped-down modes! All members of the family play guitar and sing, and all had a hand in directing the music – but the lineup also shifts a bit from track to track – sometimes with vocals from all four, sometimes just Caetano in duet with one of the sons, sometimes just Caetano himself. If you love Veloso when he sings with just acoustic guitar and a bit of light backing, you'll find plenty to love here – on titles that include "Oracao Ao Tempo", "Boas Vindas", "Todo Homem", "O Seu Amor", "Genipapo Absoluto", "Reconvexo", "Um Canto De Afoxe Para O Bloco Do Ile", "Forca Estranha", and "Um Passo A Frente". VariousButtons – Starter Kit (aka Yellow Pills) ... LP
Numero, Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $16.99 22.98
A reimagined version of the legendary Yellow Pills compilation on Numero – 20 songs from the original compilation, plus two bonus tracks, new liner notes, and lots of cool sleeve scans, photos, and more! Forget everything you know about rock music in the late 70s – all the punk rock and new wave that's been immortalized over the years – and get ready to discover a whole new world of power pop! At the time, the power pop underground was as important to some ears as the artier and angrier work coming out of the east coast and UK – and the power pop world was one that could co-exist a bit more peacefully with mainstream rock, while still offering a great opportunity for bands on various local scenes. The work here has echoes of more famous acts of the time – like The Cars, The Kings, or The Knack – but it's also got a bit more of a home-grown, punk rock edge – one that comes through beautifully in the guitar parts, vocals, and unabashed hooks of the tunes. The set's a follow-up to the original Yellow Pills set by zine publisher Jordan Oakes – and it delves deeper than even that one, with a real focus on work from the end of the 70s, and acts that never had great chart success overall. Titles include "High School" by Tommy Rock, "She's Hi Fi" by The Trend, "There Goes My Heart Again" by The Kids, "Not My Girl Anymore" by The Bats, "All I Want" by The Colors, "Domestic/Imported" by The Toms, "Sunshine USA" by Randy Winburn, "One In A Million" by Luxury, "She's The Girl" by The Tweeds, "Rave It Up" by Colors, and "Hey Little Girl" by The Kids. VariousLove Saves the Day – A History Of American Dance Music Culture 1970 to 1979 ... CD
Reappearing (UK), 1970s. New Copy 2CD ... $19.99
A great little collection of unusual grooves – put together by author/dancefloor historian Tim Lawrence, and very much in the same spirit as his groundbreaking book of the same title! As with some of Lawrence's best work, the collection goes way past the obvious, and starts the clock at a time long before the disco years – really showing the variety of unusual rhythmic contributions that were bubbling under before breaking into the mainstream. Titles on the 2CD set include "Hum Along & Dance (uncut version)" by Jackson 5, "Land Of Make Believe" by Chuck Mangione, "Dibwe Diambula Kabanda" by Les Troubadours Du Roi Baudouin, "Give It Up Or Turnit A Loose" by James Brown, "It's Time To Go Now" by Gladys Knight & The Pips, "We All Need Love (12" version)" by Domenic Troiano, "Don't Knock My Love (parts 1 & 2)" by Wilson Pickett, "Welcome To The Club" by Blue Magic, "Above & Beyond (12" version)" by Edgar Winter, "New York City" by Miroslav Vitous, "Fancy Dancer (12" version)" by Twennynine with Lenny White, "Brother's Gonna Work It Out" by Willie Hutch, "Leaving This Planet" by Charles Earland, "Prophecy" by Margie Joseph, "I Can't Fight Your Love" by The Modulations, and "If You Want To Try Love Again Remember Me" by Laura Lee". Music Masters, 1996. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Italian ballads played by trumpeter Enrico Rava and his Electric Five – a group that features both Domenico Caliri and Roberto Cecchetto on guitars, playing both a mix of melody and these wider washes of sound that soften the set nicely for the ballads! Other players include Giovanni Maier on bass, UT Ghandi on drums, and Richard Galliano on accordian – the last of whom brings a nice European flavor to the tunes. Titles include "Bella", "More", "Torna A Surriento", "Diva", "Il Cielo In Una Stanza", and "Un bel Di Vedremo". CD

✨✧ Dave Brubeck & Paul Desmond1975 – The Duets (LP sleeve edition) ... CD
A&M/Verve, 1975. Used Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Excellent mid 70s duet jazz from pianist Dave Brubeck & alto Paul Desmond! Duets 1975 is a nicely laidback work from the duo – playing here with no other accompaniment, in a spare set of material that's incredibly fragile and intimate – and all the better for that. The move is a real change from the pair's more famous sides of the late 50s and early 60s – and with no drums and bass to get in the way, they drift around warmly, working together and apart as old friends with a great deal of sympathy for each other. Titles include "Koto Song", "Blue Dove", "Stardust", "Alice In Wonderland", and "Summer Song". CD

Four Flies (Italy), Mid 70s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A great entry in this very groovy series – one that shifts the title a bit from previous volumes, and which also moves the music a bit too – but all while staying pretty darn funky! The set's got much more of a 70s soundtrack vibe than some of the other entries – loads of great keyboards, heavy basslines, riffing guitar, and other elements that are often used in ways that remind us of the bigger blacksploitation and crime/cop work of the decade – but cooler, hipper, and a lot more obscure! Titles include "La Professoressa Di Scienze Naturali" by Alessandro Alessandroni, "Addio Ultimo Uomo" by Franco Godi, "Uragno Sulle Bermuda" by Stelvio Cipriani, "L'Occhio Dietro La Parete" by Pippo Caruso, "A Pugni Nudi" by Franco Bixio/Fabio Frizzi/Vince Tempera, "Le Evase" by Pippo Caruso, "La Sbandata" by Domenico Modugno & Gianni Oddi, "Afrika Erotika" by Alessandro Blonksteiner, "Nove Ospiti Per Un Delitto" by Carlo Savina, and "Maladolescenza" by Pippo Caruso. ✨✧ Alexander O'NealAll Mixed Up (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Tabu/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1989. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A sweet set of remix tracks from Alexander O'Neal – and a package that takes the already-great soul vibe of his Hearsay album, and helps give it some deep new energy for the dancefloor! The album's different than the US version of All Mixed Up – with a different cover, title, and track list – and an overall approach that may well even be tighter than the domestic release, in that key way that the Brits had of putting just the right moves on a remix at the end of the 80s! Titles include "Fake 88 (house mix)", "What Can I Say To Make You Love Me (hateful club mix)", "Never Knew Love Like This (ext version)", "Criticize (Ben Liebrand rmx)", "The Lovers (ext mix)", "Criticize (rmx)", "What Can I Say To Make You Love Me (Ben Liebrand rmx)", and "Fake (ext rmx)". CD features 4 bonus tracks that includes "You Were Meant To Be My Lady (88 Keith Cohen ext rmx)", "Innocent (88 Keith Cohen house mix)", "Fake (hop mix)", and "Hearsay 89 (dub mix)". CD
