Dome (Gilbert & Lewis)Dome (with bonus download) ... LP
Dome/Editions Mego (Austria), 1980. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99
Stunning post-Wire work from the duo of BC Gilbert and G Lewis – both members of that important punk band of the late 70s, but sounding completely different here on their first album as Dome! In truth, Wire always had something going on that was different than most – especially on their second and third album – and this set kind of has those lower-level sonic elements taking center stage, while any sort of punky instrumentation drops out completely – all without sounding too commonly post-punk either! If we're throwing around those terms a bit too much, let's just say that the record really stands alone on its own – with this very odd mix of electronics, tapes, processed vocals, and the usual bass, drum, and guitar – but in ways that have those last three elements used with very unfamiliar timings and phrasings. The pair produced the record themselves – matching Martin Hannett for dark studio genius – and titles include "Cancel Your Order", "Linasixup", "Say Again", "Madmen", "Rolling Upon My Day", "And Then", and "Here We Go". Dome (Gilbert & Lewis)Dome 2 (with bonus download) ... LP
Dome/Editions Mego (Austria), 1980. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99
Further amazing sounds from the duo of Gilbert & Lewis – material recorded right after their famous start in Wire – but with a completely different mode overall! There are occasional vocal passages that definitely echo the spirit of Wire, but in a very different way – more post-punk overall, and mixed with offbeat electronics that get very dark and which sounds like the more experimental sides of the young Factory Records – mixed with other passages that are more spacious, and maybe recall some of the German electronic experiments of the period. The mix of modes is great, and the record is full of surprises throughout – definitely a step forward from 154, but also a record that echoes some of the energy of that album too. Titles include "Long Lost Life", "Reading Prof B", "Ritual View", "Twist Up", "Keep It", "The Red Tent (parts 1 & 2)", and "Breathsteps". LP, Vinyl record album

A very cool little single – one that brings back the DTTB groove in a mighty nice way! In addition to featuring the songs "Concrete Jungle" and "Deja Vu", the set also features two great remakes – a 2019 live studio recording of their classic "Staten Island Groove", and a new Kaidi Tatham reinterpretation of "Brooklyn Heights"! 12-inch, Vinyl record

Down To The BoneClassic Album Series (From Manhattan To Staten/Urban Grooves/Spread The Word – with bonus tracks) (3CD set) ... CD
Dome (UK), 1996/1998/2001. New Copy 3CD ... $16.99
The first three albums from Down To The Bone – packaged here in a nicely-priced set, with bonus tracks too! First up is From Manhattan To Staten – a record that moves across the boroughs of New York – and which also managed to have a huge impact on the Windy City as well – given that the music of Down To The Bone was perfect for the groove of the Chicago steppers scene in the 90s! The group are a bit jazz, a bit soul, and have this chunky funky rhythm at the bottom that shows their roots in the British scene – maybe a mix of electric jazz modes with inspirations from artists like Soul II Soul or the James Taylor Quartet – taken to a style that's slightly tighter overall. There's a fair bit of programming in the rhythms, mixed with live instrumentation from group members – and titles include the classic "Staten Island Groove", plus "Muesli Brown", "Savour The Flavour", "Brooklyn Heights", "3 Days In Manhattan", "Carlito's Way", "On The Corner Of Darcy Street", and "17 Mile Drive". Urban Grooves is the second album from Down To The Bone – and a set that really continues the vibe of their debut – a mix of programmed funky rhythms and liver jazz instrumentation – all awash in a groove that really helped them cross over big on both sides of the Atlantic! The production is tight, but looser than smooth jazz of the time – and the record's got more than a few strong keyboard and saxophone solos to offset its rhythmic patterns, which often draw heavily from the best styles of the British soul scene in the late 80s and early 90s. Titles include "A Little Touch Of Soul", "Phat City Hustler", "Joy Is A Good Groove", "Bump N Hustle", "To The Bone", "The Zodiac", and "Urban Jazz". Spread The Word is the overlooked third album from Down To The Bone – a set that maybe didn't take the world by storm as much as their first two, but which still has the group very much in fine formation! All the best previous elements are in place here – that strong mix of funky jazz instrumentation with contemporary rhythmic production – almost a blend of some of the funkier club styles of the time with more mainstream fusion, at a level that made these guys both a hit on the dancefloors and for kicking back at the crib! Titles include "The Backburner", "Righteous Reeds", "Sound As A Pound", "Bridgeport Boogie", "The Lowdown", and "Black Choice". 3CD set features all albums in small LP-style jackets – and bonus tracks include "Deja Vu", "Concrete Jungle", "Staten Island Groove (live studio version)", and "Brooklyn Heights (live studio version)". LasperanzaSeeds ... CD
Dome (UK), 2019. New Copy ... $15.99
A tight debut from Lasperanza – aka arranger producer Rico Garofalo, who put together the whole set as a tribute to older jazz, funk, and soul that laid the seeds for his own music in recent years! The record has a vibe that's a bit like that strong UK soul tradition started with Incognito, and carried forth by a number of other artists in recent years – with a really strong vision at the core, handled by a musician who's also a maestro in the studio – who then opens the door to a shifting array of singers who really make the record sparkle with a great sense of variety! Lasperanza has sax or flute solos on most tracks, and seems ready to rise up there with the cream of UK soul labels like Dome or Expansion in recent years – and guest singers include Decosta Boyce, Hannah White, LaAerial, Kayleigh O'Neill, Colette Connor, Keni Stevens, and Izzy Chase. Most tracks are remakes of soulful classics, completely changed up – and titles include "Let's Stay Together", "Give Me The Night", "Kilimanjaro", "Under The Moon & Over The Sky", "Early Morning Love", "Working Day & Night", "In The Mood", and "It Should Have Been You". Mikelyn RoderickCopasetic Is ... CD
Dome (UK), 2007. Used ... $9.99
A wonderful solo debut from Mikelyn Roderick – a singer who previously worked in the group By All Means, but who sounds even better here on her own! Mikelyn's got a confident, upfront approach that clearly comes from her many years in the soul music business – yet her sound is never too "easy", nor too commercial – because she's got a great way of just hitting a mellow flow and letting a tune unfold on its own. The album's a wonderfully understated gem – like some of the best soul sets that used to come out on Expansion years ago – and Mikelyn strikes a great balance between professionalism and personality, in a mix that's often not heard this well in younger Neo Soul singers. Titles include "Easy", "Slippin", "Thinkin Of Us", "Fantasy", "Love Of My Life", "Slick & Deep", "Last Winter", and a version of "If You Really Love Me", featuring Rahsaan Patterson. CD

VariousSoul Lounge Volume 13 – 40 Soulful Grooves (3CD box set) ... CD
Dome/Soul Lounge (UK), 2017. New Copy 3 CDs ... $19.99
A fantastic set of contemporary soul tracks – music from both sides of the Atlantic, served up in a well-priced collection that brings together the best of the British and American underground soul scenes! A good deal of the work here is from the catalog of the Dome label in the past decade or so – an imprint who continues to be one of the few stronger indie labels dedicated to discovering and properly presenting the best in soul music – something that's becoming more and more important in recent years, as so many new artists only issue digital releases. This 3CD pacakge is a great reminder of how wonderful it can be to hear tracks like these on a proper CD release – and the whole thing's a treasure trove throughout – with 40 tracks that include "Sky (Ski Oakenfull rmx)" by Bluey, "Spiritual Eyes (Young Pulse & ATN rmx)" by Jarrod Lawson, "Feel Like Dancing" by Heston, "Need You Now" by Avery Sunshine, "Looking For" by Eric Roberson, "You Know Just When" by Dennis Taylor, "Morning Love" by Simon Law, "To Prove My Love" by Incognito, "Hurts Like Hell" by Angela Johnson, "Let's Do It Right" by Imaani, "Something More" by Makeda, "Like Rain" by Greg Dean with Natalie Weiss & Amber Iman, "Never Letting Go" by Frank McComb, "Crazy" by Rahsaan Patterson, "Only Be Me" by Conya Doss, "Surrender" by Seek, "The Real Thing" by Avani, "People Of Tomorrow" by Citrus Sun, and "Take It" by Cooly's Hot Box. ✨✧ Citrus SunRide Like The Wind ... CD
Dome (UK), 2018. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A fantastic little record from Jean-Paul "Bluey" Maunick – served up by a project with a slightly different vibe than his famous group Incognito – but a sound that's every bit as soulful! There's maybe a bit more jazz in the mix here – a focus even more on the great instrumentalists that Bluey works with – with long keyboard solos from the leader himself, plus trumpet from Dominic Glover, piano from Matt Cooper, guitar from Francisco Sales and Jim Mullen, and some other great contributions too! There's definitely still some vocals on the set – work from Imaani, Joao Caetano, and Natalie Williams – but a good portion of the set is instrumental too. Titles include a great cover of Marcos Valle's "Vontade De Rever Voce", the Harry Whitaker tune "Send Me Your Feelings", and (surprisingly!) the Christopher Cross AOR standard "Ride Like The Wind" – redone here as a beautifully soulful tune. But the best stuff might be the original tunes – including "The Stallion Rides Again", "Calling Mr Wolf", "Refugee", and "All Mine" – plus the longer "Krabi Suite (parts 1 to 5)", which takes up most of the end of the album. One of the greatest values in contemporary soul music – and a series we can still highly recommend even after the course of eleven previous volumes! The 3CD package is overflowing with great tracks far from the mainstream of soul – the kind of current, underground tracks that you'll hear from only a select few on both sides of the Atlantic – with an especially strong focus on UK soul artists here, given that the Dome Records label puts out some of the best of the London scene! There's plenty here to love – including a number of tracks that haven't been on CD before – and titles include "Sleepwalkers (Opolopo rmx)" by Jarrod Lawson, "Lowdown (Ski Oakenfull rmx)" by Incognito with Mario Biondi & Chaka Khan, "People (DJ Spen & Gary Hudgkins rmx)" by Shaun Escoffery, "Just For One Day" by Imaani, "Music & Its Magical Way" by Jarrod Lawson, "Soul Town (Nigel Lowis rmx)" by Ola Onabule, "Deja Vu" by Angela Johnson, "Bridge Over Troubled Water (acoustic)" by Shaun Escoffery, "Believe Me" by Anthony David, "Ever After (Jiva rmx)" by Seek, "Touch My Body" by Cooly's Hot Box, "Brighter Tomorrow" by Diplomats Of Soul, "Major Bossa" by Khari Cabral Simmons with Sabrina Malheiros, "Change" by Full Flava with Joy Rose, and "Every Time I Turn Around" by Makeda. 40 tracks in all! Arthur LymanLegend Of Pele ... LP
Hi Fi, 1957. Very Good- ... $3.99
One of the best albums ever recorded by Arthur Lyman – cut shortly after he departed Martin Denny's group, with a very similar exotica style. Lyman's vibes are nice and spooky, ringing out in the echoey setting of the album – which was Henry Kaiser's incredible Aluminum Dome in Honolulu. A great bit of postwar colonial exotica trapped on wax, and brought back to the mainland for folks in suburban LA – and featuring the tracks "Magic Island", "Cubana Chant", "Fire Down Below", "Cumana", "Hana Pele", "Pele", and "Tropical". 20th Century, 1968. Very Good ... $29.99
A pretty darn psych/groovy soundtrack – to what looks like a very strange film! The music is by Ken Thorne – and the tracks are a mix of mod rhythms, instrumental groovers, and some very trippy numbers that use echoey percussion and some electrified instrumentation. A few cuts have vocals – such as "Respect" by The Ferris Wheel and "Touchables Theme", sung by Nirvana, in a style that's almost in the Bob Crewe mode – but the best cuts are the instrumentals, which are really really fantastic. A few cuts have organ by Wynder K Frog – and titles include "Samson's Theme", "The Dome", "Sadie's Theme", "Christian & Melanie", "Blues For A Frog", and "The Chase". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Arthur LymanIlikai ... LP
Life, 1967. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Late 60s magic from Arthur Lyman – proof that he was still going strong when other exotica players were beginning to fade! Ilikai is a set dedicated to the Lyman group's new home – a move from the Henry Kaiser Aluminum Dome over to the Canoe House of the Ilikai Hotel – a setting that might have been arguably more tropical at the time! Lyman's got a great sense of balance here – and keeps things nice and mellow where other 60s exotic players might have given into a tendency to sweeten the sound with strings or step it up with a bit more bass. There is a bit of upbeat jazz on "Work Song" – one of the album's few groovers – and other titles include "Ain't No Big Thing", "Born Free", "Shells", "Clair De Lune", "Ilikai", and "Lara's Theme". Ennio Morricone/Andrea GuerraLa Domenica Specialmente ... CD
GDM/Beat (Italy), 1991. Used ... $11.99
A film divided up into four different parts – three of which receive some great scoring from Ennio Morricone! The music is a bit overlooked in the Morricone canon – but stands out with some of the stronger elements he brought to his music of the period – especially that understated way of using larger arrangements in more compressed qualities, often hovering below a sonic range in some spots – but augmented by stronger flourishes in others! One big highlight is the 34 minute "I Cane Blue" suite – alongside shorter tracks that include "La Neve Sul Fuocco", "Specialmente La Fisarmonica", and "La Domenica Specialmente". Andrea Guerra scored the remaining tracks, which are from the fourth section of the film – and these have a moody vibe that's not unlike Morricone – with titles that include "Le Chiese Di Legno" and "I Tamburi Della Luna". An incredible album from Moreno Veloso – the son of the famous Caetano, but an artist who's already very much his own man on this classic collaboration with the team of Kassin and Domenico! Moreno plays it cool on most of the record – singing in a spare setting that mixes acoustic guitar and percussion with some occasional electronics, sounding best on the tracks that are the most stripped-down, because if he does share one thing with his father, it's a warmly intimate voice, one that will grab you right away! The electronics are all a bit ok, but it's the voice that sells this one – and it fortunately comes to the forefront on most of the record. One of the most groove-heavy collections we've ever heard from the team of Andy Votel and Doug Shipton – a set that's got a lot warmer vibe than you might expect from the styles mentioned in the title! Most of the cuts here have a sweet post-disco sort of approach – lean instrumentation fused onto grooves that represent the more cutting edge sound of the underground in the early 80s – styles that definitely learn a lot from the changes on the post-punk world, but which also find a way to keep things aimed at a crossover dancefloor! As usual with the pair, there's plenty here you never would have discovered otherwise – and titles include "Killing Car" by Philippe Brejean, "The Fremen" by Zed, "My Time" by The Tunes, "You Can Choke Like That" by Biting Tongues, "Tyklo Punk Rock" by Andrezj Korzynski, "Cruise Missle Blues (inst)" by Sirons, "Horizontal DIY" by 53 Bus, and "There's A Star In You" by Don Gere. Forget the darker sounds of the cold wave generation – and fall in love with the groovier, funkier style of these electronic gems from the post-punk years! The music here is as heavy on keyboards and electronics as the first volume in the series – and the tunes sometimes have vocals, sometimes a strong instrumental focus – almost always with some sort of a groove! There's a whole strain of tracks here that almost feel like some early 80s evolution of the moog pop modes of the Perry-Kingsley generation – and given the dates, and the budgets of most of the artists, the instrumentation is more analogue than you might expect. As always with Finders Keepers/Cache Cache, the track list is superb – and the whole thing is the sort of musical discovery that's always made us totally love the label! A trio record without any drums – which allows for really great interplay between the bass of Fratello Joseph Bassi, the piano of Domenico Sanna, and tenor of Max Ionata! We're used to hearing Ionata in a more snapping sort of session, but he's maybe even more compelling here – carving out some sharp, soulful lines next to the fantastic interplay between bass and piano, all given this warmth that will really have us paying a lot more attention to Bassi in the future! The depth of his tones are wonderful – never overplayed, but delivered with this stark, simple, almost economical mode that's a nice contrast to the more fluid, but equally colorful work of Sanna on piano. Green's got this raspy voice that's just great – somewhat fragile, but not in a wispy way – kind of honest and human, and somewhere in the Billie Holiday tradition, yet very much her own bag too! The backings are quite unique – handled by an excellent group led by tenorist Ike Quebec, who's also working with Grant Green on guitar and Sir Charles Thompson on organ. The band is nice, and Quebec gets in a few solos, but the real highlight is Greene, whose beautifully fragile voice gives haunting renditions of standards like "Let There Be Love", "My Hour Of Need", "Trouble In Mind", and "I Won't Cry Anymore". A fairly mournful album, and with a nice moody late night feel. US pressing – with lots of bonus tracks! CD

KassinRelax ... CD
Luaka Bop, 2018. New Copy ... $12.99 13.99
We admire the hell out of Kassin, but it's hard to imagine that we'd relax when faced with a new record of his – as we always pay fervent attention to everything he ever does! And this time around, that attention is rewarded even more than usual – as the musician and studio genius emerges a bit more from the background than usual – finally putting his face on the cover (sort of!), and really showing off his talents as both a singer and songwriter! Yet as with all of Kassin's other work – including his famous collaborations with Domenico and Moreno Veloso, his time in Orquesta Imperial, and his projects with bigger names in Brazilian music – there's always this understated quality that makes the whole thing even more charming than if Kassin was overstating his talents. Kassin is one of the few contemporary Brazilian artists to really live up to the genius of the golden years that gave us talents like Marcos Valle, Edu Lobo, or Caetano Veloso – and his sense of songwriting, presentation, and overall structure here is wonderful – making the album an instant classic in Brazilian music. Titles include "Seria O Donut", "Comprimidos Demais", "Estricnina", "Momento De Clareza", "O Anestesista", "Su Sugestao", "Enquanto Desaba O Mundo", and "As Coisa Que Nos Nao Fizemos". CD

Modern Jazz QuartetEuropean Concert ... LP
Atlantic, 1960. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... $7.99
A double-length live set from the legendary Modern Jazz Quartet – recorded in Scandinavia in 1960, almost as a summation of the group's growing genius in the 50s! The tunes are a mix of John Lewis and Milt Jackson originals, plus other songs all given the wonderful MJQ twist – distilled into a sublime blend of piano, vibes, bass, and drums – all delivered with a sense of class, but never too much polish. The album is live, but still has that sophisticated composure that made the group so unique at the time – and the whole thing's a perfect complement to their famous studio albums on Atlantic! Set features 15 tracks in all – including "Django", "Bluesology", "La Ronde", "Festival Sketch", "Vendome", "Odds Against Tomorrow", "Skating In Central Park", "The Cylinder", "Bags' Groove", "I Should Care", "Round Midnight", and "It Don't Mean A Thing (If It Ain't Got That Swing)". Prestige, Early 50s. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... $7.99
A 2LP set that brings together most of the material from the first three full-length albums by the Modern Jazz Quartet – all recorded at a time when the combo were first forging their famous sound! Most of the sides here are in contrast to the group's better-known Atlantic work, because the group at this point still featured Kenny Clarke on drums – and although a few tracks here include Connie Kay, the bulk of the recordings are touched by Clarke's tighter, sometimes more aggressive work on percussion – making for a less-than-trademark sound that we really like. As usual, the rest of the group features Milt Jackson on vibes, John Lewis on piano, and Percy Heath on bass – and the 2LP set features 18 tracks that include "Concorde", "Vendome", "Milano", "La Ronde", "Django", "All The Things You Are", "Softly As In A Morning Sunrise", "Delauney's Dilemma", "La Ronde Suite", "All Of You", and "Ralph's New Blues". Sonny RollinsComplete Sonny Rollins In Japan ... CD
Victor (Japan), 1973. New Copy 2CD ... $36.99
One of Sonny Rollins' best albums of the 70s – a Japanese-only live date that features some excellent work on both tenor and soprano sax! The group has a really great feel – thanks to congas by Mtume and guitar from Yoshiaki Masuo – both of whom bring some new elements to Rollins' groove, alongside electric bass from Bob Cranshaw and drums from David Lee. Sonny's solos are all well-blown and quite extended – put together with a strong sense of fire, and a bit less of the hoke that could sometimes show up on other US domestic albums. Tracks are all long, and titles include "Powaii", "Moritat", "Alfie", and "St Thomas". This 2CD version features a full bonus disc of previously unreleased work from the concert – 3 titles that include "Hold Em Joe", "Sais", and "God Bless The Child". CD

Caetano, Moreno, Tom, & Zeca VelosoOfertorio Ao Vivo ... CD
Universal, 2018. New Copy ... $13.99 14.98
A fantastic family outing from Caetano Veloso – one that has the legendary Brazilian singer working with his sons Tom, Zeca, and Moreno Veloso! Moreno's probably the one who's best known to American audiences – thanks to his fantastic legacy of sounds with Domenico and Kassin in the +2 trio – but the approach here is quite different than those records, and maybe has the warm intimacy of Caetano in some of his best stripped-down modes! All members of the family play guitar and sing, and all had a hand in directing the music – but the lineup also shifts a bit from track to track – sometimes with vocals from all four, sometimes just Caetano in duet with one of the sons, sometimes just Caetano himself. If you love Veloso when he sings with just acoustic guitar and a bit of light backing, you'll find plenty to love here – on titles that include "Oracao Ao Tempo", "Boas Vindas", "Todo Homem", "O Seu Amor", "Genipapo Absoluto", "Reconvexo", "Um Canto De Afoxe Para O Bloco Do Ile", "Forca Estranha", and "Um Passo A Frente". VariousMusica Per L'Immagine – Obscure Italian Production Music 1974 to 1985 ... LP
Fly By Night, Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 2LP ... $24.99
Rare work from the Italian sound library scene – and a set that definitely lives up to the "obscure" promised by its title, by looking at a period that hasn't been as strongly covered by other reissues! Much of the work here is from the early 80s – and shows a change in keyboard modes, rhythms, and other instrumentation from the Fender Rhodes and organ of the 60s and 70s – maybe more of an electro soul style overall, even though the tracks are all pretty darn groovy all the way through! Many are quite funky, but with electro touches – and the tunes avoid some of the too dark, or too commercial modes that some of the other sound library cuts were falling into at the time. Titles include "Nitrogen" by Alberto Baldan Bembo, "Crossing" by Space Craft's Men, "Stella Nova" by The Astral Dimension, "Music" by Flip Flop Group, "Vision" by Lamberto Macci, "In The Space" by Albert Verrecchia, "Spensieratamente" by Domenico Di Vito, "Screw Driver" by Fabio Fabor & Antonio Arena, "Week-End Playback" by Elageron, and "Sagittarius" by Modern Sound Quartet. VariousTogo Soul 70 – Edits & Rarities EP ... LP
Hot Casa (France), Late 70s. New Copy ... $22.99
A great companion to the Togo Soul 70 compilation – one that features two more rare tracks from back in the day, and two new remixes that offer up a contemporary take on a pair of other rare cuts! If you missed the core volume, it's definitely well worth checking out – and is a wonderful document of a West African scene that never got much exposure over the years! The set begins with a long remix – "Adome Nyueto (Bosq rework)" by Yta Jourais – a cut that's got warm horns and female vocals, kicked up just a bit with a clubby vibe. Next is "Bercuse Bassari" by Napo De Mi Amor – a cut from 1974 that has these really righteous horns and vocals coming down on the groove, plus another great percussive element too – perhaps a balafon! Another remix starts out the flipside – "Loxo Nye (Pushin Wood rmx)" by Roger Damawuzan – but a cut that sounds very vintage over all, with a cool organ line over romping percussion underneath the vocal. Last up is "Miade Dua" by Sewavi Jacintho from 1977 – a cut that's got this massive echoey percussion, which really sets fire to a twangy guitar line, great horns, and the excellent vocals of the leader – also known as "The Togolese Soul Man". Good domestic reissue of some very obscure sides by one of the great unsung soul groups of the early 70s. Fat Beats, 2018. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The Brownout magic turns towards the world of Public Enemy this time around – in a sweet little record that serves up Latin funk instrumentals of PE classics! The music is hardly hip hop – apart from a few turntable scratches and vocal samples – and instead, the groove is deep deep funk, with plenty of Latin elements thrown into the mix – served up with a super-tight blast of horns, lots of riffing guitar, and plenty of heavy percussion! Titles include instrumental remakes of "911 Is A Joke", "Prophets Of Rage", "Fight The Power", "Louder Than A Bomb", "Shut Em Down", "Don't Believe The Hype", and "Welcome To The Terrordome". ✨✧ Roy AyersVibrations ... LP
Polydor, 1976. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
One of Roy Ayers' greatest albums of the 70s – a set that tightens up the groove from previous Polydor productions, yet still keeps all the soul intact! The record picks up the style begun with the Mystic Voyage album, and pushes it to some slightly tighter territory – a more focused Roy Ayers sound that's totally great, and which makes the album sparkle wonderfully throughout! All aspects of Roy's talents are perfectly balanced here – his warm vocals and jazzy vibes, his uptempo grooves and mellower rhythms – played to perfection by a hip lineup of players that includes Philip Woo on electric piano, Justo Almario on tenor sax, and Steve Cobb on drums. Edwin Birdsong guests a bit on the record – bringing in a nice edge to a few tunes – the album's got a really unique dark undercurrent, even in smoother moments – that subtle Roy Ayers' approach that's always made him one of our all-time favorite artists. Titles include the wonderful jazz-tinged "Searching", a great midtempo stepper that we really love; the funky break track "The Memory", a righteous number that feels like work from earlier records; the clubby classic "One Sweet Love to Remember"; and the sweet instrumental "Vibrations", which has a mellow kickback feel! Other tunes include "Higher", "Domelo (Give It To Me)", "Baby I Need Your Love", and "Better Days". LP, Vinyl record album

Not the usual sounds you might expect from postwar country music – as Wayne Raney's an unusual star from the King Records roster – one who could play harmonica as well as sing, and who definitely brought a strong boogie current to his hillbilly material! Nice one! 14 tight independent hip hop joints all with the crisp, soulful vibe that's Spinna's hallmark, even if he didn't produce all of them, though he was responsible for many. As with some other popular compilation/mix series you get one disc of the tracks in their full versions, unmixed, and another with Spinna getting to work on the 1's and 2's for a continuous set that flows like hot butter over popcorn. Spinna's deep hip hop roots show through nicely with tracks by the Jigmastas and 7L & Esoteric saddling up next to nice instrumentals by Spinna himself as well as 88 Keys and Kingsize. With "Lyrical Fluctuation 2000 (Spinna mix)" by the Jigmastas, "3ree6ix5ive" by Old World Disorder, "Take A Look" by the Domecrackers, "Across The Globe" by the Jay I Geez, "Precision" by Kingsize and 9 more slices of underground niceness to keep your head boppin', packaged beautifully in a really nice foldout cardboard sleeve in a slipcase! A strong return to the mic from the one-and-only Pharoahe Monch – his unbelievably long-awaited follow up to the amazing Internal Affairs – and one of the best major label hip hop LPs of the first half of '07! Pharoahe's nearly decade long absense from the mainstream seems to have spawned a bit of a contemplative streak on some tunes, an anthemic streak on others, and a modern cultural awareness that might catch you off guard – if you only know him for the "Girlies, rub on ya . . ." mantra, you don't know the half it.
