✨✧ Dome (Gilbert & Lewis)Dome (with bonus download) ... LP
Dome/Editions Mego (Austria), 1980. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Stunning post-Wire work from the duo of BC Gilbert and G Lewis – both members of that important punk band of the late 70s, but sounding completely different here on their first album as Dome! In truth, Wire always had something going on that was different than most – especially on their second and third album – and this set kind of has those lower-level sonic elements taking center stage, while any sort of punky instrumentation drops out completely – all without sounding too commonly post-punk either! If we're throwing around those terms a bit too much, let's just say that the record really stands alone on its own – with this very odd mix of electronics, tapes, processed vocals, and the usual bass, drum, and guitar – but in ways that have those last three elements used with very unfamiliar timings and phrasings. The pair produced the record themselves – matching Martin Hannett for dark studio genius – and titles include "Cancel Your Order", "Linasixup", "Say Again", "Madmen", "Rolling Upon My Day", "And Then", and "Here We Go". ✨✧ Dome (Gilbert & Lewis)Dome 2 (with bonus download) ... LP
Dome/Editions Mego (Austria), 1980. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Further amazing sounds from the duo of Gilbert & Lewis – material recorded right after their famous start in Wire – but with a completely different mode overall! There are occasional vocal passages that definitely echo the spirit of Wire, but in a very different way – more post-punk overall, and mixed with offbeat electronics that get very dark and which sounds like the more experimental sides of the young Factory Records – mixed with other passages that are more spacious, and maybe recall some of the German electronic experiments of the period. The mix of modes is great, and the record is full of surprises throughout – definitely a step forward from 154, but also a record that echoes some of the energy of that album too. Titles include "Long Lost Life", "Reading Prof B", "Ritual View", "Twist Up", "Keep It", "The Red Tent (parts 1 & 2)", and "Breathsteps". LP, Vinyl record album

Citrus SunRide Like The Wind ... CD
Dome (UK), 2018. New Copy ... $16.99
A fantastic little record from Jean-Paul "Bluey" Maunick – served up by a project with a slightly different vibe than his famous group Incognito – but a sound that's every bit as soulful! There's maybe a bit more jazz in the mix here – a focus even more on the great instrumentalists that Bluey works with – with long keyboard solos from the leader himself, plus trumpet from Dominic Glover, piano from Matt Cooper, guitar from Francisco Sales and Jim Mullen, and some other great contributions too! There's definitely still some vocals on the set – work from Imaani, Joao Caetano, and Natalie Williams – but a good portion of the set is instrumental too. Titles include a great cover of Marcos Valle's "Vontade De Rever Voce", the Harry Whitaker tune "Send Me Your Feelings", and (surprisingly!) the Christopher Cross AOR standard "Ride Like The Wind" – redone here as a beautifully soulful tune. But the best stuff might be the original tunes – including "The Stallion Rides Again", "Calling Mr Wolf", "Refugee", and "All Mine" – plus the longer "Krabi Suite (parts 1 to 5)", which takes up most of the end of the album. In addition to featuring the songs "Concrete Jungle" and "Deja Vu", the set also features two great remakes – a 2019 live studio recording of their classic "Staten Island Groove", and a new Kaidi Tatham reinterpretation of "Brooklyn Heights"! 12-inch, Vinyl record

Down To The BoneClassic Album Series (From Manhattan To Staten/Urban Grooves/Spread The Word – with bonus tracks) (3CD set) ... CD
Dome (UK), 1996/1998/2001. New Copy 3CD ... $16.99
The first three albums from Down To The Bone – packaged here in a nicely-priced set, with bonus tracks too! First up is From Manhattan To Staten – a record that moves across the boroughs of New York – and which also managed to have a huge impact on the Windy City as well – given that the music of Down To The Bone was perfect for the groove of the Chicago steppers scene in the 90s! The group are a bit jazz, a bit soul, and have this chunky funky rhythm at the bottom that shows their roots in the British scene – maybe a mix of electric jazz modes with inspirations from artists like Soul II Soul or the James Taylor Quartet – taken to a style that's slightly tighter overall. There's a fair bit of programming in the rhythms, mixed with live instrumentation from group members – and titles include the classic "Staten Island Groove", plus "Muesli Brown", "Savour The Flavour", "Brooklyn Heights", "3 Days In Manhattan", "Carlito's Way", "On The Corner Of Darcy Street", and "17 Mile Drive". Urban Grooves is the second album from Down To The Bone – and a set that really continues the vibe of their debut – a mix of programmed funky rhythms and liver jazz instrumentation – all awash in a groove that really helped them cross over big on both sides of the Atlantic! The production is tight, but looser than smooth jazz of the time – and the record's got more than a few strong keyboard and saxophone solos to offset its rhythmic patterns, which often draw heavily from the best styles of the British soul scene in the late 80s and early 90s. Titles include "A Little Touch Of Soul", "Phat City Hustler", "Joy Is A Good Groove", "Bump N Hustle", "To The Bone", "The Zodiac", and "Urban Jazz". Spread The Word is the overlooked third album from Down To The Bone – a set that maybe didn't take the world by storm as much as their first two, but which still has the group very much in fine formation! All the best previous elements are in place here – that strong mix of funky jazz instrumentation with contemporary rhythmic production – almost a blend of some of the funkier club styles of the time with more mainstream fusion, at a level that made these guys both a hit on the dancefloors and for kicking back at the crib! Titles include "The Backburner", "Righteous Reeds", "Sound As A Pound", "Bridgeport Boogie", "The Lowdown", and "Black Choice". 3CD set features all albums in small LP-style jackets – and bonus tracks include "Deja Vu", "Concrete Jungle", "Staten Island Groove (live studio version)", and "Brooklyn Heights (live studio version)". Shaun EscofferyEvergreen ... CD
Dome (UK), 2016. New Copy ... $16.99
Why isn't Shaun Escoffery bigger? He's easily been one of the top soul singers in the world for over a decade – and a record like this should be in everyone's collection! Shaun's always had a cutting edge sound in his music – and this time around, he inflects it with a bit of classic soul too – mixing his 21st Century style with a sound that puts him rock solidly in the territory of Al Green, Marvin Gaye, or Bobby Womack – all artists we wouldn't hesitate to compare Shaun to – given the depth and consistency of his music! The record's a stunner – maybe the one that will finally break Escoffery to a bigger global audience – and even if it doesn't, it's one you'll be loving for years – which we know we will. Titles include "Love Shine Down", "Evergreen", "Healing Me", "When Love Is Gone", "Here Comes The Rain Again", "Lost For Words", "Win Again", and "Teachers". CD

LasperanzaSeeds ... CD
Dome (UK), 2019. New Copy ... $15.99
A tight debut from Lasperanza – aka arranger producer Rico Garofalo, who put together the whole set as a tribute to older jazz, funk, and soul that laid the seeds for his own music in recent years! The record has a vibe that's a bit like that strong UK soul tradition started with Incognito, and carried forth by a number of other artists in recent years – with a really strong vision at the core, handled by a musician who's also a maestro in the studio – who then opens the door to a shifting array of singers who really make the record sparkle with a great sense of variety! Lasperanza has sax or flute solos on most tracks, and seems ready to rise up there with the cream of UK soul labels like Dome or Expansion in recent years – and guest singers include Decosta Boyce, Hannah White, LaAerial, Kayleigh O'Neill, Colette Connor, Keni Stevens, and Izzy Chase. Most tracks are remakes of soulful classics, completely changed up – and titles include "Let's Stay Together", "Give Me The Night", "Kilimanjaro", "Under The Moon & Over The Sky", "Early Morning Love", "Working Day & Night", "In The Mood", and "It Should Have Been You". A crucial bit of British Soul – Sinclair's I Want You Back LP, one of the most popular homegrown soul records in the London scene of the early 90s! The album's got the warm grooves and beats you'd expect from some of the bigger British soul acts who crossed over to the US at the time – plenty of traces of Soul II Soul, Loose Ends, and Mica Paris running through the mix – but it's also got a more streetwise feel that shows the slightly different scene Sinclair was working in. Titles include "Honey Love", "Ain't No Casanova", "I Want You Back", "Misunderstanding", "It's Over", "Just Another Fool", "Another Guy", and "Stay With Me Tonight". CD

One of the greatest values in contemporary soul music – and a series we can still highly recommend even after the course of eleven previous volumes! The 3CD package is overflowing with great tracks far from the mainstream of soul – the kind of current, underground tracks that you'll hear from only a select few on both sides of the Atlantic – with an especially strong focus on UK soul artists here, given that the Dome Records label puts out some of the best of the London scene! There's plenty here to love – including a number of tracks that haven't been on CD before – and titles include "Sleepwalkers (Opolopo rmx)" by Jarrod Lawson, "Lowdown (Ski Oakenfull rmx)" by Incognito with Mario Biondi & Chaka Khan, "People (DJ Spen & Gary Hudgkins rmx)" by Shaun Escoffery, "Just For One Day" by Imaani, "Music & Its Magical Way" by Jarrod Lawson, "Soul Town (Nigel Lowis rmx)" by Ola Onabule, "Deja Vu" by Angela Johnson, "Bridge Over Troubled Water (acoustic)" by Shaun Escoffery, "Believe Me" by Anthony David, "Ever After (Jiva rmx)" by Seek, "Touch My Body" by Cooly's Hot Box, "Brighter Tomorrow" by Diplomats Of Soul, "Major Bossa" by Khari Cabral Simmons with Sabrina Malheiros, "Change" by Full Flava with Joy Rose, and "Every Time I Turn Around" by Makeda. 40 tracks in all! Dome (UK), 2006. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A wonderful, bossa-inflected jazzy soul surprise from UK-bred/Atlanta-based diva Julie Dexter and ATL-fellow Khari Simmons of Jiva – an effervescent batch of tunes that meld the best modern soul styles of both artists with a mutual affection for bossa rhythms! The duo pulls off the blend with what feels like an effortless grace – Julie's vocals are light, soulful and often quite jazzy in way which expands nicely on her previous work – with a backdrop of bass, Rhodes and B3, Moog, occasional horns and percussion. Nice! Tracks include "Moon Bossa", a sweet cover of Everything But The Girl's "My Baby Don't Love Me", "Salt Sea", "Venusian", "The Dove", "Salt Sea", "Venusian", "The Dove", "Sea And Sky", "Promises", "Wave" feat Kenny Latimore and more, plus 3 bonus remixes: "Venusian (Aquariana rmx)", "The Dove (Jiva remix)" and "Fooled By A Smile (Incognito remix)", plus "Moon Bossa (piano outro)". A flagship record from the wonderful Dome label – one of the hippest homes to contemporary soul on the other side of the Atlantic – and a company that's given us great music for over two decades! This set is one of their key early releases – a brilliant set from Hil St Soul – a singer who just grew and grew in popularity after this release. Hil's got a sweetly jazzy style – a bit like some of the underground NuSoul singers in the US in at the same time, but maybe with some of the crispness of the London scene too – and she sings here with some nicely restrained arrangements that have a good focus on beats and lots of warm instrumentation over the top, never too hype, just right for her personal style. Titles include "Strictly A Vibe Thing", "Just A Matter Of Time", "Nostalgia", "Concrete Jungle", "Free Spirit", "There For Me", "Until You Come Back To Me", "For Your Love", and "Props". 20th anniversary edition features bonus tracks – "Until You Come Back To Me (acoustic)", "Just A Matter Of Time (VRS rmx)", and "Down To Business". A hefty collection of work from Down To The Bone – one that focuses on all the great tracks they issued on 12" singles, which really helped their sound set fire to dancefloors over the years! ✨✧ AvaniReal Thing ... CD
Dome (UK), 2004. Used ... Out Of Stock
A cracker of a great soul album – the sweet debut set by Avani, one of the best British singers we've heard in years! The album's got a stripped-down and laidback feel that ranks with the best of recent American Neo Soul work – never too over the top, as could sometimes be a problem with British soul in years past – and instead produced with a gentle groove that's very much in keeping with some of the other wonderful recent work from the Dome label. Avani's also got a nice way with a hook, too – and isn't afraid to break out from time to time with a few tasty tracks that could be huge crossover singles, if given the chance. Titles include "Heads Up", "Best Friend's Lover", "The Waiting's Over", "2 Luv U", "Something On My Mind", "Things U Do", and "Teardrops" – plus "Watching You", a great duet with Rahsaan Patterson! Cache Cache (UK), Early 80s. New Copy ... $22.99
One of the most groove-heavy collections we've ever heard from the team of Andy Votel and Doug Shipton – a set that's got a lot warmer vibe than you might expect from the styles mentioned in the title! Most of the cuts here have a sweet post-disco sort of approach – lean instrumentation fused onto grooves that represent the more cutting edge sound of the underground in the early 80s – styles that definitely learn a lot from the changes on the post-punk world, but which also find a way to keep things aimed at a crossover dancefloor! As usual with the pair, there's plenty here you never would have discovered otherwise – and titles include "Killing Car" by Philippe Brejean, "The Fremen" by Zed, "My Time" by The Tunes, "You Can Choke Like That" by Biting Tongues, "Tyklo Punk Rock" by Andrezj Korzynski, "Cruise Missle Blues (inst)" by Sirons, "Horizontal DIY" by 53 Bus, and "There's A Star In You" by Don Gere. Cache Cache (UK), Early 80s. New Copy ... $22.99
Forget the darker sounds of the cold wave generation – and fall in love with the groovier, funkier style of these electronic gems from the post-punk years! The music here is as heavy on keyboards and electronics as the first volume in the series – and the tunes sometimes have vocals, sometimes a strong instrumental focus – almost always with some sort of a groove! There's a whole strain of tracks here that almost feel like some early 80s evolution of the moog pop modes of the Perry-Kingsley generation – and given the dates, and the budgets of most of the artists, the instrumentation is more analogue than you might expect. As always with Finders Keepers/Cache Cache, the track list is superb – and the whole thing is the sort of musical discovery that's always made us totally love the label! A trio record without any drums – which allows for really great interplay between the bass of Fratello Joseph Bassi, the piano of Domenico Sanna, and tenor of Max Ionata! We're used to hearing Ionata in a more snapping sort of session, but he's maybe even more compelling here – carving out some sharp, soulful lines next to the fantastic interplay between bass and piano, all given this warmth that will really have us paying a lot more attention to Bassi in the future! The depth of his tones are wonderful – never overplayed, but delivered with this stark, simple, almost economical mode that's a nice contrast to the more fluid, but equally colorful work of Sanna on piano. Fast-moving grooves from Dona Onete – a raw-voiced singer who really brings a lot to the music – which often feels like samba turned up a few notches on the speedometer! Rhythms are both from acoustic and electric percussion – moving quickly, but with a pace that never seems to dampen the energy of Onete – a singer whose years of experience really come through in the lyrics! Instrumentation includes strong tropical lines on guitar, a bit of sax, and a huge range of percussion from JP Cavalcante – who even plays a wooden chair at one point. Titles include "Festa Do Turbarao", "Tambor Do Norte", "Balanco Do Acai", "Musa Da Babilonia", "Vem Chamegar", and "Mexe Mexe". LP, Vinyl record album

Professor LonghairNew Orleans Piano – Blues Originals Vol 2 (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Atlantic, 1949/1953. Used ... Just Sold Out!
Essential New Orleans piano from Professor Longhair – an artist who was neither a professor, nor a man with much hair! The chrome-domed pianist had a huge influence on the sound of New Orleans R&B and soul to come – as he played in a triplet-heavy way that was rooted in blues, but provided a key link to the rhythms that would dominate Crescent City music in following decades. This album features original Atlantic sides cut in New Orleans in 1949 and 1953 – about as classic as you can get for Longhair, with tunes that include "Tipitina", "Hey Now Baby", "In The Night", "Ball The Wall", "Who's Been Fooling You", "She Walks Right In", and "Willie Mae". Elba RamalhoO Ouro Do Po Da Estrada ... LP
Polysom (Brazil), 2019. New Copy (reissue)... $29.99
Brazilian singer Elba Ramalho is still going strong – and maybe sounding better than ever, partly due to a matured quality in her vocals – which makes things sometimes sound deeper than in the early years! The style here is a mix of older forro elements with more contemporary touches – accordion a bit in the background on more numbers, surrounded by electric elements that emphasize some of the more soulful currents in the music – while the lady herself stands strongly in the spotlight. The set features guest appearances by Ney Matogrosso and Roberta Sa – and titles include "Girassol", "Calcanhar", "Na Areia", "Princesa Domeu Lugar", "Oxente", "Setudo Pode Acontecer", and "O Mundo". Wayne RaneySongs Of The Hills ... CD
King, Late 40s/Early 50s. New Copy ... $3.99 9.98
Not the usual sounds you might expect from postwar country music – as Wayne Raney's an unusual star from the King Records roster – one who could play harmonica as well as sing, and who definitely brought a strong boogie current to his hillbilly material! The album's a heavyweight collection of Raney's early work for King – classic singles, pulled together into a full album that's got a lot more bite than you might expect from the domestic image on the cover! Titles include "Lost John Boogie", "Pardon My Whiskers", "The Roosters Are Crowing", "We Love To Live", "My Annabelle Lee", "I Done & Sold My Soul", "Gone With The Wind This Morning", and "Catfish Baby". Caetano, Moreno, Tom, & Zeca VelosoOfertorio Ao Vivo ... CD
Universal, 2018. New Copy ... $13.99 14.98
A fantastic family outing from Caetano Veloso – one that has the legendary Brazilian singer working with his sons Tom, Zeca, and Moreno Veloso! Moreno's probably the one who's best known to American audiences – thanks to his fantastic legacy of sounds with Domenico and Kassin in the +2 trio – but the approach here is quite different than those records, and maybe has the warm intimacy of Caetano in some of his best stripped-down modes! All members of the family play guitar and sing, and all had a hand in directing the music – but the lineup also shifts a bit from track to track – sometimes with vocals from all four, sometimes just Caetano in duet with one of the sons, sometimes just Caetano himself. If you love Veloso when he sings with just acoustic guitar and a bit of light backing, you'll find plenty to love here – on titles that include "Oracao Ao Tempo", "Boas Vindas", "Todo Homem", "O Seu Amor", "Genipapo Absoluto", "Reconvexo", "Um Canto De Afoxe Para O Bloco Do Ile", "Forca Estranha", and "Um Passo A Frente". VariousTogo Soul 70 – Edits & Rarities EP ... LP
Hot Casa (France), Late 70s. New Copy ... $22.99
A great companion to the Togo Soul 70 compilation – one that features two more rare tracks from back in the day, and two new remixes that offer up a contemporary take on a pair of other rare cuts! If you missed the core volume, it's definitely well worth checking out – and is a wonderful document of a West African scene that never got much exposure over the years! The set begins with a long remix – "Adome Nyueto (Bosq rework)" by Yta Jourais – a cut that's got warm horns and female vocals, kicked up just a bit with a clubby vibe. Next is "Bercuse Bassari" by Napo De Mi Amor – a cut from 1974 that has these really righteous horns and vocals coming down on the groove, plus another great percussive element too – perhaps a balafon! Another remix starts out the flipside – "Loxo Nye (Pushin Wood rmx)" by Roger Damawuzan – but a cut that sounds very vintage over all, with a cool organ line over romping percussion underneath the vocal. Last up is "Miade Dua" by Sewavi Jacintho from 1977 – a cut that's got this massive echoey percussion, which really sets fire to a twangy guitar line, great horns, and the excellent vocals of the leader – also known as "The Togolese Soul Man". ✨✧ Sonny RollinsComplete Sonny Rollins In Japan ... CD
Victor (Japan), 1973. Used 2 CDs ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of Sonny Rollins' best albums of the 70s – a Japanese-only live date that features some excellent work on both tenor and soprano sax! The group has a really great feel – thanks to congas by Mtume and guitar from Yoshiaki Masuo – both of whom bring some new elements to Rollins' groove, alongside electric bass from Bob Cranshaw and drums from David Lee. Sonny's solos are all well-blown and quite extended – put together with a strong sense of fire, and a bit less of the hoke that could sometimes show up on other US domestic albums. Tracks are all long, and titles include "Powaii", "Moritat", "Alfie", and "St Thomas". This 2CD version features a full bonus disc of previously unreleased work from the concert – 3 titles that include "Hold Em Joe", "Sais", and "God Bless The Child". CD

Fat Beats, 2018. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The Brownout magic turns towards the world of Public Enemy this time around – in a sweet little record that serves up Latin funk instrumentals of PE classics! The music is hardly hip hop – apart from a few turntable scratches and vocal samples – and instead, the groove is deep deep funk, with plenty of Latin elements thrown into the mix – served up with a super-tight blast of horns, lots of riffing guitar, and plenty of heavy percussion! Titles include instrumental remakes of "911 Is A Joke", "Prophets Of Rage", "Fight The Power", "Louder Than A Bomb", "Shut Em Down", "Don't Believe The Hype", and "Welcome To The Terrordome". ✨✧ KassinRelax (with bonus download) ... LP
Luaka Bop, 2018. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
We admire the hell out of Kassin, but it's hard to imagine that we'd relax when faced with a new record of his – as we always pay fervent attention to everything he ever does! And this time around, that attention is rewarded even more than usual – as the musician and studio genius emerges a bit more from the background than usual – finally putting his face on the cover (sort of!), and really showing off his talents as both a singer and songwriter! Yet as with all of Kassin's other work – including his famous collaborations with Domenico and Moreno Veloso, his time in Orquesta Imperial, and his projects with bigger names in Brazilian music – there's always this understated quality that makes the whole thing even more charming than if Kassin was overstating his talents. Kassin is one of the few contemporary Brazilian artists to really live up to the genius of the golden years that gave us talents like Marcos Valle, Edu Lobo, or Caetano Veloso – and his sense of songwriting, presentation, and overall structure here is wonderful – making the album an instant classic in Brazilian music. Titles include "Seria O Donut", "Comprimidos Demais", "Estricnina", "Momento De Clareza", "O Anestesista", "Su Sugestao", "Enquanto Desaba O Mundo", and "As Coisa Que Nos Nao Fizemos". ✨✧ RubbaIn Motion – Modern Progressive Group Sounds Played By Rubba ... LP
Farfalla/De Wolfe (Italy), 1979. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
One of the more obscure sound library albums of the 70s from the Music De Wolfe label – a set of electric jazz tracks that's a bit more open and varied than the usual sound library groove – with occasional periods of instrumental intensity that really lives up to the progressive promise in the title! The tracks move between short, two minute numbers that are straight and funky – and other tracks that stretch things out a bit longer, with almost a rock fusion quality – but never too jamming or indulgent. Keyboards are the main instrumentation in the solo spots – and are used with enough variety, it would be hard to tie the record to any one sort of easy reference. Titles include "Vector", "Nebulae", "Green Star", "Moog Concerto", "Astradome", "So Softly", "Perpetual Whirlwind", and "Carousel In The Milky Way". LP, Vinyl record album

Prestige, Early 50s. Very Good 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A 2LP set that brings together most of the material from the first three full-length albums by the Modern Jazz Quartet – all recorded at a time when the combo were first forging their famous sound! Most of the sides here are in contrast to the group's better-known Atlantic work, because the group at this point still featured Kenny Clarke on drums – and although a few tracks here include Connie Kay, the bulk of the recordings are touched by Clarke's tighter, sometimes more aggressive work on percussion – making for a less-than-trademark sound that we really like. As usual, the rest of the group features Milt Jackson on vibes, John Lewis on piano, and Percy Heath on bass – and the 2LP set features 18 tracks that include "Concorde", "Vendome", "Milano", "La Ronde", "Django", "All The Things You Are", "Softly As In A Morning Sunrise", "Delauney's Dilemma", "La Ronde Suite", "All Of You", and "Ralph's New Blues".
