Dome (Gilbert & Lewis)Dome (with bonus download) ... LP
Dome/Editions Mego (Austria), 1980. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99
Stunning post-Wire work from the duo of BC Gilbert and G Lewis – both members of that important punk band of the late 70s, but sounding completely different here on their first album as Dome! In truth, Wire always had something going on that was different than most – especially on their second and third album – and this set kind of has those lower-level sonic elements taking center stage, while any sort of punky instrumentation drops out completely – all without sounding too commonly post-punk either! If we're throwing around those terms a bit too much, let's just say that the record really stands alone on its own – with this very odd mix of electronics, tapes, processed vocals, and the usual bass, drum, and guitar – but in ways that have those last three elements used with very unfamiliar timings and phrasings. The pair produced the record themselves – matching Martin Hannett for dark studio genius – and titles include "Cancel Your Order", "Linasixup", "Say Again", "Madmen", "Rolling Upon My Day", "And Then", and "Here We Go". Dome (Gilbert & Lewis)Dome 2 (with bonus download) ... LP
Dome/Editions Mego (Austria), 1980. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99
Further amazing sounds from the duo of Gilbert & Lewis – material recorded right after their famous start in Wire – but with a completely different mode overall! There are occasional vocal passages that definitely echo the spirit of Wire, but in a very different way – more post-punk overall, and mixed with offbeat electronics that get very dark and which sounds like the more experimental sides of the young Factory Records – mixed with other passages that are more spacious, and maybe recall some of the German electronic experiments of the period. The mix of modes is great, and the record is full of surprises throughout – definitely a step forward from 154, but also a record that echoes some of the energy of that album too. Titles include "Long Lost Life", "Reading Prof B", "Ritual View", "Twist Up", "Keep It", "The Red Tent (parts 1 & 2)", and "Breathsteps". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Don ENatural ... CD
Dome (UK), 2008. Used ... $4.99
The first set we've heard from Don E in a few years – but it's really been worth the wait, as he's really deepened his sound on this set! Some of the more mainstream modes of Don's previous work have been shaken off nicely – and his overall vibe's a bit hipper this time around, and more fitting to the style of some of his other contemporaries on the Dome label. Most tunes have a feel that's laidback, yet still quite confident – Don's vocals sliding nicely around guitar lines and keyboards, including a bit of Fender Rhodes played by D'Angelo on one track! Titles include "Get Off", "Love Shine In", "Addictive Luv", "Waiting In Vain", "So Cold", "Natural", "The Time Is Now", and "Like I Like It". CD

Down To The BoneClassic Album Series (From Manhattan To Staten/Urban Grooves/Spread The Word – with bonus tracks) (3CD set) ... CD
Dome (UK), 1996/1998/2001. New Copy 3CD ... $16.99
The first three albums from Down To The Bone – packaged here in a nicely-priced set, with bonus tracks too! First up is From Manhattan To Staten – a record that moves across the boroughs of New York – and which also managed to have a huge impact on the Windy City as well – given that the music of Down To The Bone was perfect for the groove of the Chicago steppers scene in the 90s! The group are a bit jazz, a bit soul, and have this chunky funky rhythm at the bottom that shows their roots in the British scene – maybe a mix of electric jazz modes with inspirations from artists like Soul II Soul or the James Taylor Quartet – taken to a style that's slightly tighter overall. There's a fair bit of programming in the rhythms, mixed with live instrumentation from group members – and titles include the classic "Staten Island Groove", plus "Muesli Brown", "Savour The Flavour", "Brooklyn Heights", "3 Days In Manhattan", "Carlito's Way", "On The Corner Of Darcy Street", and "17 Mile Drive". Urban Grooves is the second album from Down To The Bone – and a set that really continues the vibe of their debut – a mix of programmed funky rhythms and liver jazz instrumentation – all awash in a groove that really helped them cross over big on both sides of the Atlantic! The production is tight, but looser than smooth jazz of the time – and the record's got more than a few strong keyboard and saxophone solos to offset its rhythmic patterns, which often draw heavily from the best styles of the British soul scene in the late 80s and early 90s. Titles include "A Little Touch Of Soul", "Phat City Hustler", "Joy Is A Good Groove", "Bump N Hustle", "To The Bone", "The Zodiac", and "Urban Jazz". Spread The Word is the overlooked third album from Down To The Bone – a set that maybe didn't take the world by storm as much as their first two, but which still has the group very much in fine formation! All the best previous elements are in place here – that strong mix of funky jazz instrumentation with contemporary rhythmic production – almost a blend of some of the funkier club styles of the time with more mainstream fusion, at a level that made these guys both a hit on the dancefloors and for kicking back at the crib! Titles include "The Backburner", "Righteous Reeds", "Sound As A Pound", "Bridgeport Boogie", "The Lowdown", and "Black Choice". 3CD set features all albums in small LP-style jackets – and bonus tracks include "Deja Vu", "Concrete Jungle", "Staten Island Groove (live studio version)", and "Brooklyn Heights (live studio version)". LasperanzaSeeds ... CD
Dome (UK), 2019. New Copy ... $15.99
A tight debut from Lasperanza – aka arranger producer Rico Garofalo, who put together the whole set as a tribute to older jazz, funk, and soul that laid the seeds for his own music in recent years! The record has a vibe that's a bit like that strong UK soul tradition started with Incognito, and carried forth by a number of other artists in recent years – with a really strong vision at the core, handled by a musician who's also a maestro in the studio – who then opens the door to a shifting array of singers who really make the record sparkle with a great sense of variety! Lasperanza has sax or flute solos on most tracks, and seems ready to rise up there with the cream of UK soul labels like Dome or Expansion in recent years – and guest singers include Decosta Boyce, Hannah White, LaAerial, Kayleigh O'Neill, Colette Connor, Keni Stevens, and Izzy Chase. Most tracks are remakes of soulful classics, completely changed up – and titles include "Let's Stay Together", "Give Me The Night", "Kilimanjaro", "Under The Moon & Over The Sky", "Early Morning Love", "Working Day & Night", "In The Mood", and "It Should Have Been You". Dome/Soul Lounge (UK), 2017. New Copy 3 CDs ... Out Of Stock
A fantastic set of contemporary soul tracks – music from both sides of the Atlantic, served up in a well-priced collection that brings together the best of the British and American underground soul scenes! A good deal of the work here is from the catalog of the Dome label in the past decade or so – an imprint who continues to be one of the few stronger indie labels dedicated to discovering and properly presenting the best in soul music – something that's becoming more and more important in recent years, as so many new artists only issue digital releases. This 3CD pacakge is a great reminder of how wonderful it can be to hear tracks like these on a proper CD release – and the whole thing's a treasure trove throughout – with 40 tracks that include "Sky (Ski Oakenfull rmx)" by Bluey, "Spiritual Eyes (Young Pulse & ATN rmx)" by Jarrod Lawson, "Feel Like Dancing" by Heston, "Need You Now" by Avery Sunshine, "Looking For" by Eric Roberson, "You Know Just When" by Dennis Taylor, "Morning Love" by Simon Law, "To Prove My Love" by Incognito, "Hurts Like Hell" by Angela Johnson, "Let's Do It Right" by Imaani, "Something More" by Makeda, "Like Rain" by Greg Dean with Natalie Weiss & Amber Iman, "Never Letting Go" by Frank McComb, "Crazy" by Rahsaan Patterson, "Only Be Me" by Conya Doss, "Surrender" by Seek, "The Real Thing" by Avani, "People Of Tomorrow" by Citrus Sun, and "Take It" by Cooly's Hot Box. After a strong few years of improv collaborations, Chicago tenor sax player Gerrit Hatcher delivers a scorching solo set! Burnt Pan Rolling Boil finds him effectively reeling from propulsive blowing bits to surprisingly meditative passages. The title here is pretty apt, and a nice little statement on the way Gerrit cooks here – a mix of exciting, unbridled blasts and comparably low key, understated moments. Strong stuff from a scrappy, yet charismatic player! Titles include "Salt Dome" (Parts 1, 2 and 3) and "Cooking Fuel". CD

One of the strongest artists on the UK-based Dome label – home to some of the most consistently strong modern R&B we've heard in years! Hil's got a sweetly jazzy style – a bit like some of the underground NuSoul singers in the US in recent years – and she sings here with some nicely restrained arrangements that have a good focus on beats and lots of warm instrumentation over the top, never too hype, just right for her personal style. Titles include "Strictly A Vibe Thing", "Just A Matter Of Time", "Nostalgia", "Concrete Jungle", "Free Spirit", "There For Me", "Until You Come Back To Me", "For Your Love", and "Props". ✨✧ Frankie Goes To HollywoodWelcome To the Pleasuredome ... LP
ZTT/Island, 1984. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Arguably one of the greatest concept albums of the 80s – and the only really strong full length album cut by Frankie Goes To Hollywood! At the time of the set, the group was riding high on the success and controversy of their singles "Relax" and "Two Tribes" – but in the ambitious ZTT mode, sought to expand their sound way past familiar hits, and into a realm of sonic exploration that rivaled that of labelmates Art Of Noise. Don't get us wrong, because the Frankie of this album is still very much in groove-oriented territory – but they also let Horn take over with some more striking tunes that are both longer and shorter than the usual pop track – offsetting the vocal numbers on the record with a rich tapestry of musical backdrops that also more firmly forward the group's social and sexual leanings. The album features surprising covers of "War", "Do You Know The Way To San Jose", and "Born To Run" – plus the hits "Relax" and "Two Tribes", and the original numbers "Welcome To the Pleasure Dome", "Krisco Kisses", "The Ballad Of 32", "Wish The Lads Were Here", "Black Night White Light", "The Only Star In Heaven", "The Power Of Love", and "Bang". ✨✧ Bernard XolotlMusic By Xolotl (with bonus 7" single) ... LP
Wah Wah (Spain), 1977. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Music as cosmic as the image on the cover – a rare set of electronics from Bernard Xolotl, originally only issued on cassette in a very limited run! The music here is a perfect blend of hypnotic minimalism and electronic mysticism – pre-new age, with none of the goofier trappings of that time – and in a space between the long-form keyboard work of Terry Riley, and some of the more space-oriented electronics coming from the post-prog scenes in Germany and France! The tracks flow beautifully, with a very organic pulse – almost as if Xolotl is tapping into the energy of the universe, and finding a way to communicate it in music. Titles include "Venusian Aurora", "Arpeggios", "Gliding Through The Cosmophonic Dome", "Uranian Sundance", and "Love On The Run". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Speedometer with James JuniorNo Turning Back ... CD
Freestyle (UK), 2015. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Speedometer unleash a great new talent for this excellent album – singer James Junior, who helps the group hit even greater funky heights than before! James isn't just one of those fake retro-styled vocalists who are thrown into the mix as an extra element – but a well-schooled, UK soul talent who's been working for years on a range of projects from session sides to gospel work – a legacy that's given him plenty of time to hone his craft, and emerge here as a singer who almost eclipses the rest of the group! The singer is just what Speedometer needed – a way to help them to really open up and find new territory with their sharp style of instrumentation – including a bit of jazz that we might never have heard from the group otherwise, which James takes to with a solid flair that reminds us a bit of Cleveland Watkins many years ago. This isn't another one of those deep funk albums trying to recreate the sound of soul music from the 60s and 70s – and instead really hits these fresh, strong styles that are completely great, and which make the whole album a delight – a great reminder that sometimes the UK scene can have a much more contemporary soul approach than the US. Titles include "Orisha's Party", "No Turning Back", "Just The Same", "I Showed Them", "Homebreaker", "Troubled Land", "Middle Of The Night", and "Mirage". CD

Cache Cache (UK), Early 80s. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the most groove-heavy collections we've ever heard from the team of Andy Votel and Doug Shipton – a set that's got a lot warmer vibe than you might expect from the styles mentioned in the title! Most of the cuts here have a sweet post-disco sort of approach – lean instrumentation fused onto grooves that represent the more cutting edge sound of the underground in the early 80s – styles that definitely learn a lot from the changes on the post-punk world, but which also find a way to keep things aimed at a crossover dancefloor! As usual with the pair, there's plenty here you never would have discovered otherwise – and titles include "Killing Car" by Philippe Brejean, "The Fremen" by Zed, "My Time" by The Tunes, "You Can Choke Like That" by Biting Tongues, "Tyklo Punk Rock" by Andrezj Korzynski, "Cruise Missle Blues (inst)" by Sirons, "Horizontal DIY" by 53 Bus, and "There's A Star In You" by Don Gere. Cache Cache (UK), Early 80s. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Forget the darker sounds of the cold wave generation – and fall in love with the groovier, funkier style of these electronic gems from the post-punk years! The music here is as heavy on keyboards and electronics as the first volume in the series – and the tunes sometimes have vocals, sometimes a strong instrumental focus – almost always with some sort of a groove! There's a whole strain of tracks here that almost feel like some early 80s evolution of the moog pop modes of the Perry-Kingsley generation – and given the dates, and the budgets of most of the artists, the instrumentation is more analogue than you might expect. As always with Finders Keepers/Cache Cache, the track list is superb – and the whole thing is the sort of musical discovery that's always made us totally love the label! Titles include "Die Liebe Ist Ein Abenteuer" by Ti Tho, "Rattan" by Cosmic Overdrive, "Meat Grinder" by George Atwell, "Walking Away" by Vibrant Thigh, "Chicken Skin Planet" by Beach Surgeons, "Einstein" by Cos, "Welcome Home" by Pragvec, and "Zombie 2" by Andrzej Korzynski. Hannibal/Luaka Bop, 2001. New Copy Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
An incredible album from Moreno Veloso – the son of the famous Caetano, but an artist who's already very much his own man on this classic collaboration with the team of Kassin and Domenico! Moreno plays it cool on most of the record – singing in a spare setting that mixes acoustic guitar and percussion with some occasional electronics, sounding best on the tracks that are the most stripped-down, because if he does share one thing with his father, it's a warmly intimate voice, one that will grab you right away! The electronics are all a bit ok, but it's the voice that sells this one – and it fortunately comes to the forefront on most of the record. An excellent set that has the vocal talents of the Swingle Singers backed by the sweet and mellow instrumentation of the Modern Jazz Quartet! Given that John Lewis & Co were essentially local residents in Paris for so many years, it's amazing it took them until 1966 to hook up with Ward Swingle's hip vocal group – but the album's more than worth the wait, as the MJQ really help open things up, and take the Swingles into more complicated territory than before. Fratello Joseph BassiCiao Amore (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Albore Jazz (Japan), 2018. New Copy ... $9.99
A trio record without any drums – which allows for really great interplay between the bass of Fratello Joseph Bassi, the piano of Domenico Sanna, and tenor of Max Ionata! We're used to hearing Ionata in a more snapping sort of session, but he's maybe even more compelling here – carving out some sharp, soulful lines next to the fantastic interplay between bass and piano, all given this warmth that will really have us paying a lot more attention to Bassi in the future! The depth of his tones are wonderful – never overplayed, but delivered with this stark, simple, almost economical mode that's a nice contrast to the more fluid, but equally colorful work of Sanna on piano. Jubilee, Late 50s. Very Good ... $14.99
A lesser-known set from vocalist Matt Dennis – not as well-remembered as his 50s dates for RCA and Kapp, but still pretty darn great nonetheless! Matt's working here with full backings from Sy Oliver – in a set that showcases his talents more as a singer than a songwriter – but which still manages to include a few great Dennis originals. And despite a cover that looks a bit lurid – with Dennis cornering a model inside a hotel room – the overall feel of the record is quite homey and domestic, with tunes that echo images of hearth and family, but often with the kind of nod and a wink which you might expect from Matt's usual approach to a tune. Luaka Bop, 2018. New Copy ... $19.99 20.99
We admire the hell out of Kassin, but it's hard to imagine that we'd relax when faced with a new record of his – as we always pay fervent attention to everything he ever does! And this time around, that attention is rewarded even more than usual – as the musician and studio genius emerges a bit more from the background than usual – finally putting his face on the cover (sort of!), and really showing off his talents as both a singer and songwriter! Yet as with all of Kassin's other work – including his famous collaborations with Domenico and Moreno Veloso, his time in Orquesta Imperial, and his projects with bigger names in Brazilian music – there's always this understated quality that makes the whole thing even more charming than if Kassin was overstating his talents. Kassin is one of the few contemporary Brazilian artists to really live up to the genius of the golden years that gave us talents like Marcos Valle, Edu Lobo, or Caetano Veloso – and his sense of songwriting, presentation, and overall structure here is wonderful – making the album an instant classic in Brazilian music. Most of the sides here are in contrast to the group's better-known Atlantic work, because the group at this point still featured Kenny Clarke on drums – and although a few tracks here include Connie Kay, the bulk of the recordings are touched by Clarke's tighter, sometimes more aggressive work on percussion – making for a less-than-trademark sound that we really like. As usual, the rest of the group features Milt Jackson on vibes, John Lewis on piano, and Percy Heath on bass – and the 2LP set features 18 tracks that include "Concorde", "Vendome", "Milano", "La Ronde", "Django", "All The Things You Are", "Softly As In A Morning Sunrise", "Delauney's Dilemma", "La Ronde Suite", "All Of You", and "Ralph's New Blues". Modern Jazz Quartet/Milt Jackson QuintetMJQ (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Prestige (Japan), 1952/1954. Used ... $24.99
Nice stuff from the early days of the MJQ – recorded back when Kenny Clarke was still playing drums with the group, and giving them a bit more of a bottom! One side of the record features material recorded from one of the quartet's first sessions – in late 1952, with the tracks "La Ronde", "Vendome", and "Rose Of The Rio Grande". The rest of the record features material by Jackson's group with Horace Silver on piano, Percy Heath on bass, Kenny Clarke on drums, and the obscure Henry Boozier on trumpet. That material's a bit more bop-oriented, and titles include "Opus De Funk", "Buhania", and "Soma". CD

Mais Um Discos (UK), 2019. New Copy ... $13.99
Fast-moving grooves from Dona Onete – a raw-voiced singer who really brings a lot to the music – which often feels like samba turned up a few notches on the speedometer! Rhythms are both from acoustic and electric percussion – moving quickly, but with a pace that never seems to dampen the energy of Onete – a singer whose years of experience really come through in the lyrics! Instrumentation includes strong tropical lines on guitar, a bit of sax, and a huge range of percussion from JP Cavalcante – who even plays a wooden chair at one point. Titles include "Festa Do Turbarao", "Tambor Do Norte", "Balanco Do Acai", "Musa Da Babilonia", "Vem Chamegar", and "Mexe Mexe". CD

Polysom (Brazil), 2019. New Copy (reissue)... $29.99
Brazilian singer Elba Ramalho is still going strong – and maybe sounding better than ever, partly due to a matured quality in her vocals – which makes things sometimes sound deeper than in the early years! The style here is a mix of older forro elements with more contemporary touches – accordion a bit in the background on more numbers, surrounded by electric elements that emphasize some of the more soulful currents in the music – while the lady herself stands strongly in the spotlight. The set features guest appearances by Ney Matogrosso and Roberta Sa – and titles include "Girassol", "Calcanhar", "Na Areia", "Princesa Domeu Lugar", "Oxente", "Setudo Pode Acontecer", and "O Mundo". Sonny RollinsComplete Sonny Rollins In Japan ... CD
Victor (Japan), 1973. New Copy 2CD ... $36.99
One of Sonny Rollins' best albums of the 70s – a Japanese-only live date that features some excellent work on both tenor and soprano sax! The group has a really great feel – thanks to congas by Mtume and guitar from Yoshiaki Masuo – both of whom bring some new elements to Rollins' groove, alongside electric bass from Bob Cranshaw and drums from David Lee. Sonny's solos are all well-blown and quite extended – put together with a strong sense of fire, and a bit less of the hoke that could sometimes show up on other US domestic albums. Tracks are all long, and titles include "Powaii", "Moritat", "Alfie", and "St Thomas". This 2CD version features a full bonus disc of previously unreleased work from the concert – 3 titles that include "Hold Em Joe", "Sais", and "God Bless The Child". CD

Caetano, Moreno, Tom, & Zeca VelosoOfertorio Ao Vivo ... CD
Universal, 2018. New Copy ... $13.99 14.98
A fantastic family outing from Caetano Veloso – one that has the legendary Brazilian singer working with his sons Tom, Zeca, and Moreno Veloso! Moreno's probably the one who's best known to American audiences – thanks to his fantastic legacy of sounds with Domenico and Kassin in the +2 trio – but the approach here is quite different than those records, and maybe has the warm intimacy of Caetano in some of his best stripped-down modes! All members of the family play guitar and sing, and all had a hand in directing the music – but the lineup also shifts a bit from track to track – sometimes with vocals from all four, sometimes just Caetano in duet with one of the sons, sometimes just Caetano himself. If you love Veloso when he sings with just acoustic guitar and a bit of light backing, you'll find plenty to love here – on titles that include "Oracao Ao Tempo", "Boas Vindas", "Todo Homem", "O Seu Amor", "Genipapo Absoluto", "Reconvexo", "Um Canto De Afoxe Para O Bloco Do Ile", "Forca Estranha", and "Um Passo A Frente". VariousTogo Soul 70 – Edits & Rarities EP ... LP
Hot Casa (France), Late 70s. New Copy ... $22.99
A great companion to the Togo Soul 70 compilation – one that features two more rare tracks from back in the day, and two new remixes that offer up a contemporary take on a pair of other rare cuts! If you missed the core volume, it's definitely well worth checking out – and is a wonderful document of a West African scene that never got much exposure over the years! The set begins with a long remix – "Adome Nyueto (Bosq rework)" by Yta Jourais – a cut that's got warm horns and female vocals, kicked up just a bit with a clubby vibe. Next is "Bercuse Bassari" by Napo De Mi Amor – a cut from 1974 that has these really righteous horns and vocals coming down on the groove, plus another great percussive element too – perhaps a balafon! Another remix starts out the flipside – "Loxo Nye (Pushin Wood rmx)" by Roger Damawuzan – but a cut that sounds very vintage over all, with a cool organ line over romping percussion underneath the vocal. Last up is "Miade Dua" by Sewavi Jacintho from 1977 – a cut that's got this massive echoey percussion, which really sets fire to a twangy guitar line, great horns, and the excellent vocals of the leader – also known as "The Togolese Soul Man". ✨✧ Donald ByrdByrd In Flight (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Blue Note, 1960. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A wonderfully lyrical session from trumpeter Donald Byrd – yet for some reason, the album's one of his most overlooked from the 60s! The session features material by 2 different groups – one that includes Byrd, Hank Mobley, and Duke Pearson; and another which features Byrd, alongside Jackie McLean and Pearson. Donald's playing is really opening up here – hitting some sweeter, more drifting notes, yet still referencing the heavier style of his hardbop years from time to time – and in a way, the record's almost a hint of the solo style that Byrd would take up on 70s recordings with Larry Mizell – still in a deep groove, but with a newfound ability to sail over the top with some nice light notes. Mobley and McLean are superb, as always, and Pearson plays nice and hard – with more of an edge than on his own recordings of the time. Tracks include "Ghana", "Lex", "My Girl Shirl", and "Bo". Includes 3 bonus tracks "Child's Play", "Carol", "Soulful Kiddy"! CD

A strong return to the mic from the one-and-only Pharoahe Monch – his unbelievably long-awaited follow up to the amazing Internal Affairs – and one of the best major label hip hop LPs of the first half of '07! Pharoahe's nearly decade long absense from the mainstream seems to have spawned a bit of a contemplative streak on some tunes, an anthemic streak on others, and a modern cultural awareness that might catch you off guard – if you only know him for the "Girlies, rub on ya . . ." mantra, you don't know the half it. Welcome back! Production by Alchemist, Black Milk and others. Titles include "Free", "Desire" feat Showtyme, a reimagining of PE's "Welcome To The Terrordome", "What It Is", "When The Gun Draws", "Body Baby", "Bar Tap" feat Mela Machinko, "Hold On" feat Erykah Badu, "So Good" and the epic closer "Trilogy" (Acts I, II and III) feat Mr Porter, Dwele and Tone. ✨✧ VariousMocambo Funk 45s – A Selection Of Today's Rarest Vinyl Singles ... CD
Mocambo (Germany), 2007. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Contemporary funk, but with a groove deep enough to warrant the "rare" promised in the title – as most of these numbers would stand strongly next to the best funky 45s from the late 60s and early 70s! The production is great throughout – very hard-edged, and with a back-to-basics feel that really focuses on the best elements of the tunes – the snapping drums, funky basslines, blasting horn parts, and other great instrumental bits that make these tracks great. And while we'd always paid attention to the Mocambo label, this set clearly shows that they've got a lot more to offer than we'd ever realized – a completely solid body of work that's presented wonderfully in this super-tight CD! 18 tracks in all – including "Listen Up" by Glover Crockett & Glover, "Free Vibes (parts 1 & 2)" by Gizelle Smith & The Mocambo Allstars, "The Getaway" by Delta Rhythm Section, "Hustle The Mustle" by Speedometer, "Chicano Chaser" by Ian Langley, "Highway Patrol" by James Taylor Quartet, "Look Ka Py Py" by The Bacao Rhythm & Steel Band, "The Prophet" by Glover Crockett & Glover, and "Funkin Fever" by Delta Rhythm Section. ✨✧ RubbaIn Motion – Modern Progressive Group Sounds Played By Rubba ... LP
Farfalla/De Wolfe (Italy), 1979. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
One of the more obscure sound library albums of the 70s from the Music De Wolfe label – a set of electric jazz tracks that's a bit more open and varied than the usual sound library groove – with occasional periods of instrumental intensity that really lives up to the progressive promise in the title! The tracks move between short, two minute numbers that are straight and funky – and other tracks that stretch things out a bit longer, with almost a rock fusion quality – but never too jamming or indulgent. Keyboards are the main instrumentation in the solo spots – and are used with enough variety, it would be hard to tie the record to any one sort of easy reference. Titles include "Vector", "Nebulae", "Green Star", "Moog Concerto", "Astradome", "So Softly", "Perpetual Whirlwind", and "Carousel In The Milky Way". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ KassinRelax ... CD
Luaka Bop, 2018. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Titles include "Seria O Donut", "Comprimidos Demais", "Estricnina", "Momento De Clareza", "O Anestesista", "Su Sugestao", "Enquanto Desaba O Mundo", and "As Coisa Que Nos Nao Fizemos". CD

One of the few Blue Note albums with a bossa groove – and a great one too! The record features soulful tenor star Ike Quebec blowing in front of Brazilian-styled rhythms laid out by a combo that includes Kenny Burrell on guitar, and a duo of Latin percussionists! Willie Bobo plays drums on the session, and the cuts have a short groovy feel, with a sax-heavy lead, in a similar style to Stan Getz's bossa work on Verve – but much more soulful overall, and with a nicely rougher feel on the rhythms. Really great stuff, and with titles that include "Loie", "Goin Home", "Favela", "Blue Samba", and "Shu Shu". Features 3 bonus tracks too! CD

✨✧ VariousMusica Per L'Immagine – Obscure Italian Production Music 1974 to 1985 ... LP
Fly By Night, Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 2LP ... Out Of Stock
Rare work from the Italian sound library scene – and a set that definitely lives up to the "obscure" promised by its title, by looking at a period that hasn't been as strongly covered by other reissues! Much of the work here is from the early 80s – and shows a change in keyboard modes, rhythms, and other instrumentation from the Fender Rhodes and organ of the 60s and 70s – maybe more of an electro soul style overall, even though the tracks are all pretty darn groovy all the way through! Many are quite funky, but with electro touches – and the tunes avoid some of the too dark, or too commercial modes that some of the other sound library cuts were falling into at the time. Titles include "Nitrogen" by Alberto Baldan Bembo, "Crossing" by Space Craft's Men, "Stella Nova" by The Astral Dimension, "Music" by Flip Flop Group, "Vision" by Lamberto Macci, "In The Space" by Albert Verrecchia, "Spensieratamente" by Domenico Di Vito, "Screw Driver" by Fabio Fabor & Antonio Arena, "Week-End Playback" by Elageron, and "Sagittarius" by Modern Sound Quartet.
