On The Line has a style that's a bit keyboard-heavy – in a way that seems to borrow from some of the 80s soundtrack work of the time, and which is clearly a nod to the success of the Lyle Mays/Pat Metheny sound that was breaking big on ECM. The move is a nice one for Lee on the best cuts – those that underplay the cheesier aspects of the style – and other players on the album are a batch of likely suspects that include Harvey Mason, Dave Grusin, Ernie Watts, and Steve Forman. Titles include "The Rit Variations", "Dolphin Dreams", "California Roll", "On The Line", "Tush", and "Heavenly Bodies". LP, Vinyl record album
(Japanese Direct Disk pressing – VIDC-5. Includes the obi and insert.)
Plenty of friendship here – some really warm interplay between a well-chosen group of musicians – all of whom come together with the level of quality that always made Lee Ritenour's records stand out from the pack! This isn't easy commercial fusion, but a really soulful, cohesive set by a batch of musicians who are grounded in jazz, and have the best understanding of 70s electric elements – a lineup that includes Don Grusin on keyboards, Ernie Watts on reeds, Abraham Laboriel on bass, Alex Acuna on drums, and Steve Forman on percussion – the last two of whom provide the right snapping, spontaneous funky currents to really keep things sounding wonderful throughout. Titles include "Sea Dance", "Crystal Morning", "Woody Creek", and "Life Is The Song We Sing". LP, Vinyl record album
Japanese-style super-fusion with an all-star group – including Lee Ritenour and Eric Gale on guitars, Patrice Rushen on keyboards, and Harvey Mason on drums! LP, Vinyl record album
A late 90s record, but one that we might easily put next to similar spiritual improv albums from the 70s – a fantastic meeting of both artists at Chicago's Empty Bottle – with Joe McPhee on pocket trumpet and tenor, and Hamid Drake on some amazing drums and percussion! Drake's wonderfully open, fluid sense of sound is a great match for McPhee here – really opening up a side of Joe's music in a way that's a bit different than some of his other recordings of the time, including his Okka Disk material – spirited, but never stressed – exploratory, yet always with a strong sense of direction. Titles include "Hate Crime Cries", "Cries & Whispers", "Mother Africa", and "Emancipation Proclamation". Very spare, but very moving – in the manner of some of the early work by the Art Ensemble of Chicago! CD
Possibly the greatest album so far from Ken Vandermark's Territory Band – a live performance that has the ensemble joined by legendary Chicago tenorist Fred Anderson! The work here is one long composition – "Collide" – written and directed by Vandermark, played by the largeish ensemble, and featuring improvised passages by Anderson over the top. Instrumentation includes trumpet from Axel Doerner, percussion from Paul Lytton and Paal Nilssen-Love, electronics by Lasse Marhaug, piano by Jim Baker, and reeds by Vandermark, Dave Rempis, and Fredrik Ljungkvist – and the concert was recorded with great acoustics in Chicago's Millenium Park.
