✨✧ John HartfordIron Mountain Depot ... LP
RCA, 1970. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
One of John Hartford's last records for RCA, and one of his hippest too – a set that definitely has him moving away from being just a familiar folk artist, and blending styles and sounds even more! LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Jorge Ben10 Anos Depois ... LP
Philips (Brazil), 1960s/Early 70s. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Great stuff from Jorge Ben! The record features a batch of 3-track medleys that combine titles that Ben recorded over the past 10 years of his career – all blended together in a tight funky way, with that excellent soulful sound that he was using in the mid 70s! The groove is great all the way through – and the record's a massive party that recalls some of Jorge's best tunes ever, all recast in that tight hard 70s funky style we love so much! Includes nice remakes of "Que Maravilha", "Zazueira", "Pais Tropical", "Taj Mahal", "Que Pena", and "Mas Que Nada". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ ByrdsBallad Of Easy Rider ... CD
Columbia, 1969. Used ... Just Sold Out!
A great one from The Byrds – who deliver an iconic mix of breezy country rock and folk harmonies, over songs that range from laidback to soaring! The Byrds seemed to always be in a state of flux, line-up wise, and that actually seems to bring out a pretty great mix of styles on their best albums. We'd put this one in that category, with titles that includes "Ballad Of Easy Rider", the country funk-flavored "Fido", the effectively tradtional "Jack Tarr The Sailor", "Oil In My Lamp", "Tulsa County", "Jesus Is Just Alright", "It's All Over Now, "Baby Blue", "There Must Be Someone (I Can Turn To)", "Gunga Din", "Deportee (Plane Wreck At Los Gatos)" and "Armstrong, Aldrin And Collins". CeliaCelia ... CD
Continental/Mr Bongo (UK), 1972. New Copy ... $11.99
A beautifully groovy album from Celia Reis – maybe the hippest set ever from this Brazilian singer who was equally at home in samba and bossa modes! Production and arrangements are by Arthur Verocai – which will give you an idea of the creativity that went into the record – as Verocai creates all these ambitious grooves that are very much in the best territory of some of the funky Marcos Valle work at the start of the 70s – basslines dipping under strings, all topped with Celia's wonderful vocals – which have a power here that we've never heard on other records – almost a Gal Costa sort of touch! Tracks include tunes by Valle, Verocai, and others – and titles include "Em Familia", "Mia", "Vida De Artista", "Dominus Tecum", "Ay Adelita", "Toda Quarta Feira Depois Do Amor", "A Hora E Essa", "E Preciso Dizer ADeus", and "Badalacao". Georges GarvarentzThat Man In Istanbul ... LP
Mainstream, 1966. Very Good+ ... $6.99
Groovy soundtrack for this 60's international intrique film starring a young Horst Bucholz. Georges Garvarentz wrote and directed the music, with the sort of flair that he brings to the best of projects like these. The stuff's not as funky as his 70's stuff, but it's got a lot of nice moments, with good spy and crime themes to them. Tracks include "Fight At The Turkish Bath", "Bulldozer Leads The Dance", "Surprise Depot", "Man With The Steel Hand", and "Chase On The Calatma Bridge". LP, Vinyl record album

Marisa MonteO Que Voce Quer Saber De Verdade ... CD
Blue Note, 2012. Used ... $1.99 6.99
Wonderful work from Marisa Monte – and a set that may well be the greatest record we've heard from her in years! There's a freshness here that grabs us right away – with the lure we felt when first hearing Monte's music many years ago, but cast here in a completely different style, too – more acoustic overall, yet with these beautifully subtle touches in the background – light orchestrations that slide nicely amidst the core small combo instrumentation – all topped with some of Marisa's most heartfelt lyrics in years. The album's got some great contributions from Dadi, who's definitely Monte's other half on the project – plus hip musical contributions from an array that includes Vinicius Cantuaria, Miguel Atwood Ferguson, Marty Erlich, Bernie Worrell, and other surprising guests. Monte often plays ukulele, which has a cool sound that punctuates the record nicely – and titles include "Ainda Bem", "Verdade Uma Ilusao", "Lencinho Querido", "Descalco No Parque", "Depois", and "O Que Voce Quer Saber De Verdade". ✨✧ Tom WaitsHeart Of Saturday Night ... LP
Asylum, 1974. Near Mint- ... $79.99
An early one from Waits – his second album – and it's a great one! Like a lot of his early oeuvre, this is a kind of like a street-savvy, hipster cabaret affair, with less of the eccentricity that would reveal itself later in his career. Still a great record though, rendered with a Bukowski-esque salt of the earth palette. Includes "Fumblin' With The Blues", "Please Call Me, Baby", "Diamonds On My Windshield", "New Coat Of Paint", "The Heart Of Saturday Night", "Drunk On The Moon", "Shiver Me Timbers", "San Diego Serenade", "Semi Suite", "Depot, Depot", and "The Ghosts Of Saturday Night (After Hours At Napoleone's Pizza House)". VariousBossa No Paramount ... CD
RGE/Discmedi (Spain), Early 60s. Used ... $6.99 9.99
An excellent session of rare bossa material, recorded at the legendary Paramount Theatre, the temple to bossa nova! The album features tracks by a number of different artists, handled with a lot more care and a lot better recording quality than other live bossa sessions – and the result is one of the best compilations from the old days that we can think of. Features an amazing version of "Nana" by The Zimbo Trio, with a great funky bass breakdown in the middle – and other great tracks include "Vivo Sonhando" by Wanda De Sah, "Antes E Depois" by Oscar Castro Neves, "Tem Do De Mim" by Quarteto Em Cy, and a great duet on "Terra De Ninguem" by Marcos Valle and Elis Regina! ✨✧ Marlena ShawSweet Beginnings ... LP
Columbia, 1977. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A real classic from Marlena Shaw – a key 70s album that has the singer moving back to soul after some years in the jazz side of the spectrum – but with an approach that still holds onto all the sophistication she picked up along the way! The record's got some wonderful arrangements and production from Bert DeCoteaux – who brings Marlena into modern soul territory with some warm, sweet sounds that work perfectly in the mellow moments, and hit a few nice grooves too. A key illustration of the album's strength is the remake of "Go Away Little Boy" – done here with a great monologue in which Marlena kicks out her "little boy", then swoons as he begins to make love to her. That cut is kicked off by nicely mellow "Yu Ma", and other tracks include "No Deposit, No Return", "Sweet Beginnings", "Johnny", "Walk Softly", "The Writing Is On The Wall", "Look At Me Look At You", and "I Think I'll Tell Him". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Mario Rua SilvaStories From Another Time 1982 to 1988 ... LP
Time Capsule (UK), Mid 80s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Stories from another time and place – and music that's almost without comparison, either – as the set brings together material recorded by Angolan guitarist Mario Rui Silva, a musician whose range of expression stretches far past his West African roots! There's a heck of a lot going on here – definitely plenty of the acoustic guitar pictured on the cover, but often used with sensitivity that's more Brazilian than you'd expect – and interspersed with tracks that have other instrumentation in the lead, including balafon – sometimes spare instrumentals, sometimes vocal numbers – mostly acoustic, but with a few electric elements from time to time. The music has both a complexity and really organic mixing of modes – maybe a bit like some of the global experiments that you might have found on the Crammed label at the time, but also very unique to Mario himself too. Titles include "Ngisumba", "Mgeni", "Kazum Zum Zum", "Maniku", "Lembranca De Um Veho", "Depois De Uma Conversa", "Kabanza K'Etu", and "Dembita". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Roy AyersDestination Motherland – The Roy Ayers Anthology ... CD
Universal (UK), 1970s. Used 2 CDS ... Out Of Stock
An amazing set of tracks from one of our favorite artists ever – a whopping 33 track, 2CD compilation of some of the best of Roy's work for Polydor! Given the title, you can expect a very hip bent to the tracks picked for the set – lots of righteous politics and hip cultural themes bubbling underneath the funky and jazzy grooves that were Roy's forte during the 70s. And while we treasure just about every single track that Roy recorded for Polydor (re-release all the albums – please!), we also have to say that we probably couldn't have come up with a better 33 tracks if we'd picked them ourselves! Titles include "The Old One Two", "Life Is Just A Moment (part 2)", "The Memory", "Hey Uh What You Say Come On", "Running Away", "Searching", "We Live In Brooklyn Baby", "Coffy Is The Color", "Sweet Tears", "Red Black & Green", "No Deposits No Return", "The Third Eye", "Sweet Tears (disco)", "Africa Center Of The World", "Our Time Is Coming", "Destination Motherland", "Fever", "What You Won't Do For Love", "Thank You Thank You", "Can't You See Me (12" mix)", "Baby You Give Me A Feeling", "Everybody Loves The Sunshine", and "Love From The Sun". ✨✧ Roy Ayers & Wayne HendersonStep Into Our Life/Prime Time ... CD
Polydor/Robinsongs (UK), 1978/1980. Used 2CD ... Out Of Stock
Talk about a meeting of the minds – a pair of ultra-amazing classics from the team of Roy Ayers & Wayne Henderson – back to back in a single set! At the time of Step Into Our Life, Henderson & Ayers were probably the biggest names in the jazz funk business – both with a smooth soulful style that was pushing the genre onto whole new levels, while still keeping firm roots in jazz – a rare blend that few other artists could handle this well! This initial debut from the pair seems to be much more dominated by the spirit of Roy Ayers' work at the time – particularly the mellow jazzed up work he was laying down on albums like Vibrations and You Send Me – a wicked sound that's rooted in modern soul modes, but filled with plenty of warm jazz elements too. The album's got wonderful vibes and electric piano from Roy – and tracks include "Step Into Our Life", "Lovers Should Always Be Together", "No Deposit No Return", "Ooh Baby", and "For Real". Prime Time is a funky classic from the team of Roy Ayers and Wayne Henderson – both at the top of their game here, and effortlessly mixing together jazz, funk, and soul! The record really seems to embrace the best of both artists' styles – some of the bassy groovers that Wayne did so well himself, and while producing for other artists – and those snakey, soulful numbers that we love so much in the late 70s work from Roy Ayers – ultra-sophisticated, but still plenty darn grooving – and some of the most sensual soul you'll ever hope to hear. The whole thing's great – and titles include "Weekend Lover", "Thank You Thank You", "Can You Dance", "It Ain't Your Sign It's Your Mind", "You Make Me Feel Like Rockin With Ya", "Have Your Way", and "Million Dollar Baby". ✨✧ Juarez & His OrchestraBossa Nova Brasil ... LP
ABC, 1962. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
A gem of a record from the early 60s – a freewheeling set of bossa jazz, played by the combo of tenor saxophonist Juarez! There's a fluid, open groove to the record that's mighty nice – really romping rhythms that set fire to the tenor of Juarez right from the start – as he moves in long, soulful lines filled with plenty of improvisation – and leaps along with the grooves of the group, which also includes Nelson Dos Santos on trombone, Neco on guitar, and either Fats Elpidio or Tenorio Jr on piano! There's no string or other larger orchestrations – just tight core instrumentation, all acoustic – and mighty nice throughout. Titles include "Tema Pra Dede", "Lobo Bobo", "Direi Depois", "Samba Toff", "Maria Ninguem", "O Amor Que Acabou", and "Sincopado Triste". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Mickey NewburyFrisco Mabel Joy ... LP
Elektra, 1971. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
The second in Mickey Newbury's American Trilogy – recorded when Newbury was at Elektra Records, a label that was apparantly as unable to find an audience for him as Mercury was a few years earlier – but all these years later it stands just as beautifully of a leftfield bit of spacious, moody genius just about any singer-songwriter record of the period we can think of! Recorded at Nashville's Cinderella Sound Studios, it's really wonderful stuff that defys genre and convention, but is as emotionally connective and sastisfying as anything from the mainstream. Titles include "The Future's Not What It Used To Be", "Frisco Depot, "Swiss Cottage Place", "How I Love Them Old Songs" and more. LP, Vinyl record album

Sutro Park, Late 60s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A heavy helping of work from this excellent Jamaican trio – one of the best soulful groups of the rocksteady years, stepping out here in a mode that's similar to early material from The Wailers! The Tennors really shine here in a great blend of harmony vocals and tight Kingston rhythms – occasional currents of ska moving through early reggae modes – with top shelf studio backing to keep the groove. The set features 14 early scorchers – titles that include "Born To Be A Sufferer", "Sign Of The Times", "Do The Reggay Dance", "San Sebastian", "Tribute To Don Drummond", "Shame Face", "Deportation", and "I Am Just A Minstrel".
