✨✧ RevolutionariesMusical Dub Attack ... CD
Channel One/Deeper Knowledge, Mid 70s. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A record that really lives up to its title – as it comes on with a sound so strong, so fierce, it can certainly be called an "attack"! The dub here isn't just the lazy-stepping, head-nodding variety – but very much on point and on the money – with the studio used almost as an additional instrument alongside the core rhythmic elements – which themselves have the best Channel 1 power of the studio's glory days in the 70s! And the lack of any vocals somehow makes the whole thing even more powerful – giving the spare instrumentation a hell of a lot of focus, in ways that so many later dub-imitators always tried to reach, but never did this well. Titles include "Semi Classical Natty Dub", "Skyjuice & Festival Dub", "Everybody Dubbin", "Dub For Marcus Garvey", "Is Dub I Deal With", "Dub Development", and "Musical Dub Attack". CD

✨✧ Irreversible EntanglementsProtect Your Light ... CD
Impulse, 2023. New Copy ... $13.99 14.99
Not the first album from this fantastic group, but a set that's their initial outing for Impulse Records – the old home to John Coltrane, Sun Ra, and Pharoah Sanders – and a very fitting place for their boundless sense of expression! The group really seem to have upped their game for this album – finding a way to move into darker, deeper territory that really blows us away – really layering their sound with a richness that's almost weaponized at times, especially given the message in their songs – as if these guys have drunk deep of the complexity of ESP Albert Ayler material, the fused it to a spaceship towards the cosmos! Moor Mother delivers some spoken passages of knowledge on the album – alongside the saxes of Keir Nueringer, trumpet of Aquiles Navarro, bass of Luke Stewart, and drums of Tcheser Holmes. Titles include "Our Land Back", "Free Love", "Celestial Pathways", and "Root Branch". CD
Also available Protect Your Light ... LP 24.99

✨✧ VariousQuentin Tarantino's Death Proof – Original Soundtrack ... CD
Maverick, 1960s/1970s. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
There's few big directors we'd trust with a compilation soundtrack as much as Quentin Tarantino – and once again, the Q's shown us that his knowledge of older music runs as deep as his talent for directing a fresh image on the screen! The package here is made up of older rock, soul, and soundtrack bits from the 60s and 70s – sweet pop next to heavy guitars next to deeper soul numbers – all in a way that makes even the familiar tunes sound somehow darker than before in this new company! There's a few snippets of dialogue from the film on the disc – but not too many to get in the way – and titles include "Sally & Jack" by Pino Donaggio, "Hold Tight" by Dave Dee Dozy Beaky Mick & Tich, "Jeepster" by T Rex, "The Love You Save" by Joe Tex, "Baby It's You" by Smith, "The Last Race" by Jack Nitzsche, "Paranoia Prima" by Ennio Morricone, "Staggolee" by Pacific Gas & Electric, "It's So Easy" by Willy DeVille, "Down In Mexico" by The Coasters, "Good Love Bad Love" by Eddie Floyd, and "Riot In Thunder Alley" by Eddie Beram. ✨✧ It's A Romance ProductionLovers Rock Record Guide – Romantic Reggae Selection 1970 to 1990 (paperback) ... Book
Rittor (Japan), 2022. New Copy Book ... Out Of Stock
Here's a book that will help you go way way past the hits of the lover's rock generation in reggae – a beautiful Japanese discography that's filled with all sorts of suggestions that will really help you start digging much deeper into the crates! The approach is similar to other Japanese books on jazz, funk, and soul – in that the volume is full of color images of record covers and label scans, most in full color – with artist, title, label, and dates in English – and other text in Japanese – plenty to understand even if you can't read the language in which the book was printed, and a very visual guide that will really expand your knowledge of the records! The book has chapters on key artists and labels – with hundreds of suggestions, both LP and 12" and 7" singles – and there's also a section that has suggestions by key collectors, and an especially great section on "hidden gems" – titles you might have overlooked otherwise. The book is softcover, almost 200 pages, mostly color, with images throughout – a very cool guide to the music! Book

✨✧ Neo Griot & The Afrocentric PrinceNeo Griot & The Afrocentric Prince ... LP
Preference, 2022. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A wonderful blend of spoken word and jazz – contemporary, but put together with the strength of similar records from the 70s – those secret texts of knowledge that often used to be sold as much in bookstores as in the record racks! AK Toney and Jasik provide the spoken passages, set to avant spiritual backings from players who include Jamael Dean on piano and keyboards, Carlos Nino on percussion, Aaron Shaw on saxes, and Mekala Shaw Session on drums – musicians who shift their presence depending on the needs of the tracks – as Toney and Jasik weave a wonderfully blend of poetic language and deeper ideas. Sharada Shashidar sings on a few tracks too – and titles include "Amun", "Neptune", "Our Greatness", "Major & Minor Aspects", "House Of Good Spirit", "We Wear The Mask", and "Afronauts". ✨✧ Ben E KingStreet Tough ... LP
Atlantic, 1981. Very Good+ ... Just Sold Out!
An overlooked gem from the later years of Ben E King – a sweet little set that shows that the singer was every bit as well suited to 70s funk as he was to the uptown soul of his roots! Ben's sweet voice soars wonderfully over bass-heavy grooves that draw on club and funk, but which also have a deeper, more carefully-constructed approach – so that the album isn't just another disco effort by an older funk singer. Instead, King really rises to the challenge of the setting – and shines as strongly here as on his classic album with Average White Band, or his better-known Supernatural Thing record. Wonderful all the way through – and more proof that Ben E King is one of the great under-acknowledged geniuses of his generation – one of the few who really kept evolving into and past the 70s. Titles include "Staying Power", "Street Tough", "Made For Each Other", "Souvenirs Of Love", "Why Is The Question", and "Something To Be Loved". LP, Vinyl record album
