There's few big directors we'd trust with a compilation soundtrack as much as Quentin Tarantino – and once again, the Q's shown us that his knowledge of older music runs as deep as his talent for directing a fresh image on the screen! The package here is made up of older rock, soul, and soundtrack bits from the 60s and 70s – sweet pop next to heavy guitars next to deeper soul numbers – all in a way that makes even the familiar tunes sound somehow darker than before in this new company! Here's a book that will help you go way way past the hits of the lover's rock generation in reggae – a beautiful Japanese discography that's filled with all sorts of suggestions that will really help you start digging much deeper into the crates! The approach is similar to other Japanese books on jazz, funk, and soul – in that the volume is full of color images of record covers and label scans, most in full color – with artist, title, label, and dates in English – and other text in Japanese – plenty to understand even if you can't read the language in which the book was printed, and a very visual guide that will really expand your knowledge of the records! The book has chapters on key artists and labels – with hundreds of suggestions, both LP and 12" and 7" singles – and there's also a section that has suggestions by key collectors, and an especially great section on "hidden gems" – titles you might have overlooked otherwise. AK Toney and Jasik provide the spoken passages, set to avant spiritual backings from players who include Jamael Dean on piano and keyboards, Carlos Nino on percussion, Aaron Shaw on saxes, and Mekala Shaw Session on drums – musicians who shift their presence depending on the needs of the tracks – as Toney and Jasik weave a wonderfully blend of poetic language and deeper ideas. An overlooked gem from the later years of Ben E King – a sweet little set that shows that the singer was every bit as well suited to 70s funk as he was to the uptown soul of his roots! Ben's sweet voice soars wonderfully over bass-heavy grooves that draw on club and funk, but which also have a deeper, more carefully-constructed approach – so that the album isn't just another disco effort by an older funk singer. Instead, King really rises to the challenge of the setting – and shines as strongly here as on his classic album with Average White Band, or his better-known Supernatural Thing record. Wonderful all the way through – and more proof that Ben E King is one of the great under-acknowledged geniuses of his generation – one of the few who really kept evolving into and past the 70s.
